CELEBRATING 50 YEARS WITH A LOOK BACK AT WHERE IT STARTED Founded in 1969, RESPEC has grown to more than 20 locations in North America and 300+ employees
RESPEC celebrates its 50th anniversary by sharing the tale of its evolution across decades of cutting-edge solutions, advances in science, and technologically driven changes in our social fabric. While the speed of innovation has steadily increased through the decades and changed the way businesses respond, the immutable thread that continues to bind RESPEC’s years of business together is the entrepreneurial instinct, dedication to quality results, and perseverance that each employee shares. The idea for RESPEC was formed on a patio over a shared jug of wine between a group of young men who all shared a core value of trust and belief in one another. Determined and dedicated leadership throughout our history has led to groundbreaking work in nuclear waste management, long-standing client relationships, substantial federal research contracts and, more recently, strategic acquisitions that have allowed RESPEC to expand and grow into new areas of consulting and services. View the RESPEC 50th Anniversary Video.

RESPEC COMMEMORATES HISTORIC POTASH DISCOVERY IN NEW MEXICO Discovered in 1925 in Carlsbad, the site was the first location of commercial potash
Serving the worldwide potash mining community, RESPEC is pleased to announce the recent installation of a scenic historic marker that celebrates the site where geologist Vachel Harry McNutt discovered a vast deposit of potash ore. Driving through Eddy County on US Route 62/180, east of Carlsbad, NM, history buffs can visit the actual test well site, McSweeney-McNutt #1, at mile marker 58/59, where the US potash industry began 93 years ago. RESPEC Project Geologist Peter Smith held the vision to redeem this valuable piece of potash history, a borehole located in the Maroon Cliffs area on an open grassland marked by mesquite, sagebrush, and sunflowers. He worked in collaboration with James Rutley, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carlsbad Field Office; Michael Younger, Geologist, Intrepid Potash; and Professor David Borrok, Chairman of the Department of Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering, Missouri S&T. Smith also coordinated the drafting of the marker with Gretchen Brock, Historian, New Mexico Historic Preservation Division, Archaeological Records Management Section (ARMS), and was present when the marker was approved by the Cultural Properties Review Committee. The marker was constructed and installed by engineers from the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Region 2. “What motivated me was that this borehole is where it all started and that even if you knew where to look, it’s still hard to find. This historic location had long been forgotten and it needed recognition,” commented Smith. The World War I embargo on the importation of German potash spurred exploratory drilling in the United States.
In 1925, while drilling for petroleum, McNutt discovered the first commercial potash deposits in the entire Western Hemisphere. The McSweeneyMcNutt discovery ended the nation’s dependence on imported potash and created a new industry in southeastern New Mexico. Commercial potash mining began in 1926 with the incorporation of the American Potash Company, and since then over 248 million tons of ore have been mined from the Carlsbad area. Employed by the Texas oil company Snowden and McSweeney, McNutt initially looked for oil but found potash. In 1925, while McNutt examined drill cuttings from petroleum exploration, he found pink and red salts and recognized the potash minerals, polyhalite and sylvite. His samples confirmed a high percentage of potash. McNutt immediately started acquiring land rights and began exploration. McNutt’s wife Amy was responsible for core storage.
Potash is the common term for mined and manufactured salts containing the element potassium in a water-soluble form. As a commodity, potash has global importance to today’s agricultural producers. Potash in the form of potassium chloride and potassium carbonate is used in fertilizers. Historically, potash was made from residue left by the evaporation of watersoaked wood ash and used for manufacturing soap, textiles, and glass. New Mexico’s Permian Basin has the largest concentration of potash ores in the United States. Collaborating with a diverse team, RESPEC is proud to honor the pioneering efforts of our forefathers in the mining industry.

At the time of the acquisition, Meagan was SSG’s President. Meagan has a bachelor of administration (BA) degree in accounting and a master’s degree in taxation. Meagan currently leads the sales and marketing activities for RESPEC’s Data & Technology Solutions (DTS), and she was instrumental in integrating SSG into our DTS business unit. In addition to her business development work in DTS, Meagan led the enterprise implementation of Salesforce, which is the first enterprise-wide Client Relationship Management (CRM) system adopted within RESPEC outside of our financial management system. Meagan is also championing the elevation of a corporate-wide marketing organization.
Mr. Jay Nopola joined RESPEC in 2011. He has earned undergraduate degrees in geological engineering Jay Nopola and is currently Jay.Nopola@respec.com finishing his doctorate degree in the same area of study. Since joining RESPEC, Jay has been the lead Technical Professional in RESPEC’s Hard Rock Mechanics group. Jay has been the driving force around two major Department of Energy research grants: the Deep Borehole project and the Thermal Fracturing project; both projects were multimillion-dollar awards. Jay has been relentless in the pursuit of developing new clients and expanding RESPEC’s business interests into hard rock.

CARLSON SOFTWARE INTRODUCES C-ALS GYRO
In partnership with our LMD product partner, Carlson Software, we’re excited to share news of the C-ALS Gyro.
Recently introduced to the field, the new Carlson C-ALS Gyro is being used to support the extraction of high-grade uranium at one of the largest deposits in the world, the Cigar Lake Mine in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. A development of the standard C-ALS system, the C-ALS Gyro provides more accurate and reliable navigation of the probe as it is deployed. For this application, the C-ALS Gyro is deployed vertically upward or around 70 meters until it enters the uranium cavity, where it can scan and survey a newly mined void. This happens after Cameco’s Jet Boring System (JBS) has been deployed. JBS extraction for uranium begins with freezing the ore and rock, located nearly 450 meters below the surface, to provide stability and prevent water from entering the mine. The JBS platform is then deployed and uses highly pressurized water to cut through the ore. The ore is then transported through a series of pipes to be processed.
Advantages of C-ALS Laser Scanning: // Ability to survey potentially dangerous underground voids safely // Precise and accurate cavity/void measurement in minutes, not days // 360-degree spherical coverage for a full view from a single scan, with no blind spots // Operation is remotely controlled // Deployment methods are flexible // Easily transported // Rugged design for durability in extreme conditions
C-ALS Gyro C-ALS Gyro gives greater navigational capability, ensuring that the probes’ position along the borehole can be determined without relying on the mechanical alignment of deployment rods or a magnetic compass. With a diameter of 50 millimeters, the C-ALS Gyro system is easily deployed through boreholes, downhole or uphole, to survey inaccessible spaces.
