What is your favorite John Portman-designed building? Right now my favorite John Portman building is ADAC! We moved our office into the new Designer Suites a few months ago and we are really loving it. What is your first memory of being in or experiencing a Portman-designed landmark? Growing up in California, my first experience with a John Portmandesigned landmark was the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco. I remember walking into the atrium, and just being awestruck. What was the inspiration behind your Portman White vignette? I really wanted to create a tribute to Mr. Portman, as he is a great architect whose structures have impacted me both personally and professionally. I think my source of inspiration is taking his modern interiors and embellishing them a bit with some reference to the 1980s, which is when I first encountered his work in San Francisco. What inspires you? Whose work inspires you? I am most inspired by the problem and coming up with a creative solution.

Stan Topol Reared in the South, interior designer Stan Topol spent the early summers of his career in New York assisting Billy Baldwin. He eventually founded the award-winning design firm Stan Topol & Associates, Inc., whose associates hold degrees in art, architecture and interior design. Topol’s work has been chronicled in countless publications and earned him numerous awards. To this day, he has remained true to the design beliefs of Billy Baldwin—comfort is the ultimate luxury. What is your earliest memory of experiencing a Portman-designed landmark? Many years ago, I went to the Polaris atop the Hyatt Regency. It was the beginning of the ’70s, and it was the most amazing room I had ever seen or experienced. How do you envision using the Portman White paint color in an upcoming project? It’s a perfect tint to embellish a project we are doing on the Connecticut coast. It is the sun glistening across the water and into our small home. Be sure to stop by Stan’s Market Must-See’s:

What was the inspiration behind your Portman White vignette? Mr. Portman himself is the inspiration: understatement with style. The color Portman White and AmericasMart also served as inspirations. Portman White is one of the few whites that gives you a comfortable feeling, since it is not a harsh white and not one that reflects other colors. This makes it a great choice for walls, ceilings, and even trim. How did you get started in the world of interior design? I was fortunate to have the privilege to work with (American design legend) Billy Baldwin in New York City. Billy liked the fact that I had a degree in fine art; he always believed, as I do now, that a designer is really a decorator who enhances the lives of those he touches. What is your first memory of experiencing a Portman-designed landmark? When I was about 9 years old my mother had a brief stint as an event coordinator and one of the first events she did was at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. I remember being mesmerized by the cylinders and the modern gleaming beauty of the architecture. It is an incredibly vivid memory for me. What will be your inspiration for your Portman White vignette? White with red and blue will be the unifying theme behind my design. Be sure to stop by Michelle’s Market Must-See’s:

What are some tips for designing an all-or-mostly white palette? Portman White is a very soft white; it has a kind of warmth and glow to it. When I’m designing in a simplified palette, I always use multiple shades of a single color and tons of texture to help create depth. How do you make sure you get the most out of the market? Make a list and then go floor by floor‌AmericasMart is quite easy to maneuver and has some of the best temporaries around! What is your favorite John Portman-designed building? The Marriott Marquis in downtown Atlanta is the John Portman building that gets my creative juices flowing more than any other. Any place that makes me feel like I could possibly be in outer space in the middle of a major city pretty much wins. Overall, it’s the concentric rib-like shapes you see as you look upward that just get me every time. Inspiration for your Portman White vignette? The one adjective I will use is extreme. Probably with color and possibly a play on sculptural shape. Be sure to stop by Brian’s Market Must-See’s:

What are some tips for designing an all-or-mostly white palette? Those people that think white is easy or boring need to check themselves immediately! White is TOUGH. You’ve gotta turn up the texture factor, layer like there is no tomorrow, and then introduce a plethora of shapes to get it right. I also think art is massive in nailing white rooms. What inspires you? Whose work inspires you? Thomas O’Brien. I love a classic, collected all-American look and Thomas O’Brien epitomizes that.

What is your inspiration for your Portman White vignette? I intend be incredibly literal, and design the entire vignette and all of its contents Portman White. I’m looking forward to creating a cool and conceptual vignette with lots of textural interest and a little fantasy. What is your first memory of experiencing a Portman-designed landmark? My first visit to ADAC as a student will forever be etched into my memory. I thought, “What is this little piece of heaven hiding in plain sight?” Its sculptural presence stands apart from anything else in town. Be sure to stop by Michel’s Market Must-See’s:

What are some tips or hints to keep in mind when designing in an all-or-mostly white palette? Be forgiving! Whites are tough! You should actually use whites of as many different textures as possible; it’ll allow for additional forgiveness in color variations. Every designer needs a “go-to” white in their arsenal, and Portman White is perfect. It’s a great foundation because it lends itself to both warm and cool palettes. What is your favorite John Portman-designed building? His vacation home on Sea Island. The design-build of this amazing home was a personal journey for himself and his family. According to my research, this home caused lots of uproar with his neighbors. But in true Portman style, the home stands as a testament that he was a visionary who made his dream a reality. What was the inspiration behind your Portman White Design vignette? I took inspiration for the Portman White event from the Alhambra, a palace and fortress located in Granada, Spain.
