f If you love your work, as the saying goes, you’ll be happy every day of your life. But give yourself a beautiful space to work in, and you’ll skip off to the office every day with an extra bright smile on your face! A beautiful workspace is exactly what Tiffani Thiessen had in mind for her recent collaboration with interior designer Kristin Alber. Tiffani, a multi-passionate creative whose career highlights include actress, lifestyle influencer, cookbook author and more, needed a fresh, feminine redesign for her home office. Located in her sprawling 1920s-era residence (previously the home of Jack Warner, head of Warner Brothers Studios, it has hosted countless members of Hollywood royalty over the years), the office includes a sitting room and powder room. It is situated just steps from her children’s rooms—an absolute must for this hands-on mom! Also a must was incorporating the original vintage doors and windows, one of Tiffani’s favorite elements in the space. Working in her signature eclectic modern style, designer Kristin Alber created a space that feels elevated and feminine, but is also kid-friendly and highly personal. Custom-built case goods, piles of plush pillows, and luxe finishes such as bronze and marble give this home office a truly personalized look that reflects the creative powerhouses that dreamed it up. Read on for more sneak peeks behind the design!

"We loved the idea of doing a gallery look over the sofa with artwork from Tiffani’s collection mixed with pieces from Shadowcatchers Art" — Kristin

The Macy Sofa by Rowe Furniture (seen here in a stunning navy velvet) was one of the first items Tiffani selected for the sitting room. Kristin complemented this look with a vibrant rug from Jaipur Living, and additional seating from Rowe. “The Gigi swivel ottomans and Pate chair in beautiful muted tones were just right for the extra seating ," says Tiffani. Since the sitting room’s tufted sofa and scalloped chair both offer so much surface detail, everyone agreed the space needed something clean and classic for balance. “The [ Ashlynn Coffee Table] from Classic Home was just right ,” Tiffani explains.

“This rug from Jaipur Living really pulls everything together in the space. It’s beautiful and the we love the vibrant color.” — Tiffani

JUSTINIAN CHAIR FROM SELAMAT DESIGNS “I absolutely fell in love with this chair the moment I saw it. It’s sexy, feminine but strong, and just downright gorgeous!” — Tiffani

“The room had beautiful built-in bookcases full of so much character! We complemented Tiffani’s existing book collection with decorative books from E. Lawrence. We added in personal photos and mementos like vintage cameras that belonged to Tiffani’s parents," said Kristin. There is a charming little nook that leads to a secret room next to the bookcases. They used this space to create a reading and music area where the kids can cozy up and read while Mom is working in the office.

“In the powder room we were dealing with a very small space. So we knew we wanted wallpaper to make it pop, and the black with gold peonies from Tempaper was perfect. It wasn’t too busy and kept with the vibe of the rest of our space.” — Tiffani

As a shared office for Tiffani and her longtime assistant Tory Sparkman, the main design challenge was figuring out the best way to fit in two desks and a sofa, while maintaining the bright, airy openness of the room.

"We worked with Tritter Feefer to design two custom pieces for the space. A desk for Tiffani and a console to stylishly store additional office items. We used their fog finish and custom gold hardware to really make it special," Kristin reveals.

“We loved that we could pick the color we wanted for the Rowe office chair, as we wanted something soft and romantic to go with the desk.” — Tiffani

DISTRESSED GOLD LEAF WALLPAPER FROM TEMPAPER Sometimes, design decisions are just magic! A certain slant of light passing through the glass French doors and reflecting off the pearlescent finish of this Tempaper wallcover had everyone enchanted, leading to a last‑minute decision to create an accent wall in the office.

BEHIND THE DESIGN The driving idea for Mrs. Paranjape Papers is to offer classic design concepts with a fresh, modern twist and limitless installation options. Strong geometrics, bold and timeless color hues, and playfully modern patterns are intended to transform any space. Six designs in a variety of color ways: Yves Blue • Signature Green • Truly Taupe Naturally Neutral (ivory) • Jet Blac Greige (dark grey)

VERSA STRIPE Seems simple enough, right? Just a stripe wallpaper. But wait, there’s more! The stripe is designed on the horizontal, instead of the traditional vertical orientation. Not so straight laced, how about we print it on an angle?

LATTICE Palm Beach vibes without falling too far into kitsch. So very classic, but also scaled to feel modern. Want it to create a soft backdrop? Go Truly Taupe. Need some volume? How about Yves Blue?

DASHING Destined to be a popular pattern... it's both boho and traditional; both fresh and timeless. This lightly-weighted stripe adds a perfect backdrop for any space!

“I've spent years hunting and sourcing wallpaper for my projects and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to create a library of wallpapers that I would love to use for my clients! Several designs are fresh, playful spins on familiar patterns and textures. The new Collection’s color palette features both recognizable hues that are very much aligned to my 'new classic' aesthetic, such as Yves Blue and Signature Green, as well as a strong foundation of neutrals that are so versatile. I have these papers going up in several projects around the country and I can't wait to see how others use these papers!”

BEHIND the LENS T IP S F ROM P RO P H OTOGRAPHE RS Q + A w i t h Jo hn & M aura Stof f er

Chicago-based John and Maura Stoffer are a dream team—a husband & wife photography duo that shoot some of the most beautiful interiors we’ve ever seen! Here, John offers up some of their best tips & tricks for interior designers & aspiring photographers alike.

WHEN DID YOU DEVELOP A PASSION FOR INTERIOR PHOTOGRAPHY? My mother is a designer, so I have always been around that world. I feel like I grew up in a house that was in a constant state of renovation, the dust never

really settled! She bought me my first professional camera and lens so I could photograph her finished projects. Fast forward 8 or so years, Maura and I purchased our first home and fell in love with design and how a space feels and flows. We’ve found that we love translating good design into images and that we make a great team. I get more overall room shots, and Maura has knack for capturing vignettes and showing off how different rooms flow together. SOMETIMES YOU’VE GOT TO SNAP A PERFECT PIC QUICKLY! WHAT ARE YOUR FOUR BEST TIPS FOR GETTING DSLR-WORTHY SHOTS FROM A PHONE CAMERA? SNAP IT IN A PINCH: ›› Clean off your lens. You’d be surprised at how much clearer your images are if you wipe off all your fingerprints first. ›› Use natural light. One of the first things we do when we walk into a space is shut off all the lights so only the natural light can show off the space. It gives better colors and a more emotive feelings of a space.

›› Get low and keep your lines straight. Perspective in rooms is usually better from around belly button height and the human eye craves straight lines and horizons. ›› Shoot a ton. Get a bunch of different angles and exposures so you can pick the best shot later without having to settle or reshoot. A PERFECT INTERIOR DESIGN SHOOT BEGINS BY SETTING THE STAGE WITH GREAT LIGHTING, ACCESSORIES, AND SO ON. WHAT ARE YOUR FOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO INCLUDE IN A SHOOT? We always love when a space is flooded with natural light but that is not always the case. One major thing we use in our professional photography is a tripod. We often take long (10 seconds or more)

exposures of somewhat dark rooms and it can end up feeling like a bright and airy space. In terms of propping, simple is always better. You don’t to take attention away from the space, only add and highlight it. A simple plant, flower arrangement, or tray of baked goods should do that trick (and we’ll help you eat them afterwards). SOCIAL MEDIA IS A MUST FOR DESIGNERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS ALIKE. ANY TIPS FOR WHAT MAKES A REGULAR PIC INTO AN INSTAGRAM STANDOUT? Let your personality shine and hone in what makes you unique or different as a designer or photographer. Good content is everywhere in the social media world we live in now. What people are looking to latch on to is a unique perspective.

FINALLY, WHAT DO DESIGNERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FOSTERING A CREATIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH A GREAT INTERIOR PHOTOGRAPHER? Gosh, we love all the designers we shoot for! Here are a few tips that we find make things smoother and more fun when shooting: ›› Trust. A great relationship starts with trusting each other; micromanaging while on a shoot is a great way to slow things down and stifle creativity. ›› Be in sync. Find a photographer that has an aesthetic that matches yours so as they are shooting you can feel confident that they are getting what you need and want, in the style that you desire. ›› Clean up. Have the space that is being shot clean and styled when the photographer arrives, that way you can get right to shooting. ›› Keep it fun. Make sure you get along! You’re going to be spending a good amount of time together, you might as well enjoy the company.

HOTLIST DESIGN TRENDS ACROSS THE USA

THE NORTH PHILLIPS + GILLIGAN INTERIORS Chicago, Illinois NEW MATERIALS: "We are excited about porcelain for counters and walls and wherever we can put it! The look is so close to marble without the aggravation of etching and chipping." COLOR STORIES: "We can't get enough of the pastel eighties colors that are making a comeback. The peaches and lighter blues make us excited for summer after such a long midwestern winter." UNUSUAL COMBINATIONS: "We love mixing metals when we can get clients on board with it. Matchy-matchy feels so safe in a design but mixed metals feels intentionally sophisticated." SURFACE DETAILING: "Anything with bone inlay is a win in our book but we're also loving all of the globally inspired textiles. Mud cloth and indigo was just a start – we're excited by cactus silk and African baule and anything block printed. Not only are they gorgeous but they are a great way to bring pops of color and pattern into a room."

THE SOUTH PENCIL AND PAPER Nashville, Tennessee PRETTY LITTLE DETAILS: "We're seeing lots of pretty 'fluting' in both furniture and architectural details – loving this chest from Wisteria and the beautiful new café at Kelly Wearstler's Proper Hotel in San Francisco, CA." COLORS FOR SUMMER: "Our forever favorite color palette – classic blue and white, with always a hit of our signature tomato red – makes for the perfect color palette for this summer!" GOTTA LOVE IT: "We are firm believers in buying what you love, the best rooms are a happy mix of treasures artfully curated. This is a design belief we think transcends any trend."

THE WEST TAYLOR ANNE INTERIORS Santa Barbara, CA RAINBOW HUES: "I expect to see quite an explosion of color on the west coast in 2018 and into next year. Lemon yellow, vibrant green, raspberry and lots of rich jewel tones!" ALL IN THE DETAILS: "Attention to detail will become ever important; architectural detail, intricate yet modern patterns, traditional trims applied in modern ways. Predicting classic yet simple geometry in millwork and cabinetry, saturated colors on cabinets, dramatic stone slabs and graphic floors in kitchens/baths, and lots of mixed metals."

THE EAST CLARE KENNEDY INTERIOR DESIGN Nashville, Tennessee LESS IS MORE: "What I'm seeing in Southern Design is a move towards minimalism. People want to invest in vintage, one-of-a-kind, and high quality pieces that will stand the test of time. I'm seeing less of a desire from my clients to fill their house full of 'things' but to make everything we use be meaningful, unique and special." BACK TO NATURE: "Classic black and white will never go out of style, but people seem to be loving tans, taupes, and natural elements in design right now!"

Photo above: Alyssa Rosenheck

OLD WORLD CHARM: "I'm using a lot of textured paints (lime wash) and plaster finishes. My clients love that it adds timeless texture and warmth to their home and gives them the 'old world' feel."

PRETTY IN PASTELS • Maybe it’s coincidence, maybe it’s Instagram (unicorn-tinted treats, anyone?), but pastels have recently been reborn. From fashion and frozen drinks to high-end interiors, pastel tones are emerging as the hottest color trend of the moment. This gelato-hued palette of strawberry, pistachio, lemon and mint is fresh

enough to liven up kids’ rooms or the most sophisticated living space. The stark contrast between modern geometric or flat organic shapes and candy-colored hues gives this look some necessary edge. A few contrasting tones—bright mustard yellow, soothing navy—help this style walk the fine line between forever young and all grown up.
