The Alps “Cockpit Country” Jamaica

The Alps is located in the lush mountain region of Jamaica known as the “The Cockpit Country”. This is the last remaining forest area in Jamaica, which is a treasure trove of unique plant and animal species.

Located in The Alps are seven caves, three of these are unexplored. There are also two springs, one lake, and a river. This is predominantly a farming community which is inhabited by approximately 1,500 people. The Alps is a crime free and tight knit community of people working together. The residents are friendly and social they welcome visitors, but will hastily query outsiders when they venture into their community, especially when on their own. A stranger will be approached by any resident including children.

The most popular touring destination in the Alps is the area known as Rocky Fort. Along the hike Ras D a local herbalist will instruct on the numerous plants and herbs that have medicinal values. Most of the hiking trail is along some of the first roads into Cockpit Country where the stonework used to make the roads and bridges can still be seen. Visitors also have the opportunity to view historic sites such as plantation houses, wells and tombs. Visitors are often treated to the traditional open fire, roasted cuisine such as plantain, coco, yam and sweet potato.

Delroy Scott “Ras D” is an herbalist, environmentalist, farmer and craftsman living in The Alps. He is a practicing herbalist for twenty five years. Ras D comes from several generation of herbalist; this is the medicine that historically has sustained the residents of The Alps. Ras D conducts tours in The Alps, lectures and teaches about Cockpit Country herbal medicine. He has also consulted with researchers and students from the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. Ras D is also a vegetable farmer who specializes in roots vegetables and a craftsman of wicker furnishings and home accessories. Ras D is very passionate about maintaining the environmental balance of Cockpit Country.
