Epistle: Romans 13:11-14; 14:1-4 pg. 134

Gospel: Matthew 6:14-21 pg. 135

Epistle Reading: Brethren, salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; the night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not for disputes over opinions. One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for God is able to make him stand.

Gospel Reading: The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

THE SEASON OF GREAT LENT is the time of preparation for the feast of the Resurrection of Christ. It is a time of renewed devotion: of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It is a time of repentance, a real renewal of our minds, hearts and deeds in conformity with Christ and his teachings. It is the time, most of all, of our return to the great commandments of loving God and our neighbors. In the Orthodox Church, Great Lent is not a season of morbidity and gloominess. On the contrary, it is a time of joyfulness and purification. We are called to “anoint our faces” and to “cleanse our bodies as we cleanse our souls.” The very first hymns of the very first service of Great Lent set the proper tone of the season: Let us begin the Lenten time with delight … let us fast from passions as we fast from food, taking pleasure in the good words of the Spirit, that we may be granted to see the holy passion of Christ our God and His holy Pascha, spiritually rejoicing.

ON SATURDAY, MARCH 3, WE ARE HOSTING A VERY INTERESTING CONFERENCE which promises to be enjoyable and enriching for all who attend. The objectives of the day are: - set new goals and discuss possibilities to build up and re-energize our ministries - how can the ministries we offer help us progress and align to the four pillars of Orthodoxy which are Worship (Liturgia), Witness (Martyria), Service (Diakonia), and Fellowship (Koinonia). In addition, Bishop Sevastianos of Zela will be the keynote speaker of the conference. His Grace has served in many roles over the years and most recently as Chief Secretary of the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. His active involvement in ministries and in training of parish councils will help us with our primary objectives for the day and in the four breakout session focused on the four pillars of orthodoxy. The event will begin at 1:00 pm and extend through 5:00 pm. Please let us know if you will be able to attend by sending an email to parishdev@resurrectiongoc.net or calling Mary Patestas at 917-796-9807.
