How Latinas Are Influencing Retail

HISPANIC shoppers have become the retailers dream. New studies show that the average Latina female shopper goes to the mall at least once a week, either to window shop or make a purchase. This segment is quickly becoming the new majority consumer and the purchasing power that they are wielding has retailers sitting up and taking notice. THIS increasing demographic in the marketplace has been effecting styles and well as the way merchandise is being designed. Within the next several decades Hispanic females will make up around 30 percent of the population. That is an incredibly large number and they will be a driving force for the marketplace. MANY retailers have been developing special ad campaigns and marketing to this segment of the industry. Millennial Hispanics are very engaged consumers as well and therefore a large target audience for the campaigns. RETAILERS have been paying extra attention to color selections, textures and sizing and tailoring their fashion lines to the Latina lifestyle. It is well reported and accepted that this segment of consumers are very fashion conscious and diverse in their tastes. ONE interesting thing observed was that older Latina women are more willing to keep up with fashion trends then their counterparts of the same age. Many Hispanic celebrities are assisting with branding including Sofia Vergara and Jennifer Lopez who are both driving the market. HABLA Espanol? You’d better learn!

Second Half Retail Projections

WITH incomes on the rise, more jobs being filled and increased shopper confidence, it seems like a pretty safe prediction that retailers will benefit from a stronger consumer during this years winter holidays. A

lthough complaint is widely used in connection with customer service, the connotation of irate and unreasonable customers that it evokes is generally inaccurate. An analysis by telemarketing consultant Lee Van Vechten showed that fewer than five customer calls per hundred to a typical customer service department were classed as “irate” and fewer than one per thousand as actually rude. In a total of 846 calls, none were classified as abusive. This does not mean that customers do not complain. Instead, it means that the majority of complaint calls – calls that customers make to express dissatisfaction or request an adjustment – are considered routine by

both parties and are generally handled by them in a courteous, businesslike way that strengthens the bond between the company and its customers. Indeed, the majority of complaints are not actually complaints but are likely to be tailed as errors, exceptions, credits, adjustments, returns, exchanges and so forth. In a typical business operation, there might be between 35 to 50 such categories under the complaint heading depending on the type of business. FORUM WORKSHOP In one reported instance, an insured calling her insurance carrier about a routine matter – an apparently mis-billed premium – was transferred five times, ending up finally with a supervisor who provided incorrect information and failed to follow through on a commitment to correct the mis-billing. The net result was an extremely irate customer who filed a lengthy complaint with the insurance commission in her state and threatened the insurance company with punitive legal action as well. When the insurance company finally made the adjustment representing $260, the insured promptly canceled all three of her policies with the

What is unfortunate about this case is not just the business the company lost but also the excessive internal costs generated in the process of alienating the customer, which presumably would continue to be generated in dealing with similar exceptions in the future. Although this scenario is likely to happen in companies where senior management takes a highly defensive posture against customers (which might be expected in an insurance company sensitized to fraudulent claims), it is just as likely

to happen in companies that place too much emphasis on preventing problems but not enough on correcting problems that occur nonetheless. In short, an efficient customer service system is designed to minimize problems to the extent that it is economic, but at the point that prevention becomes uneconomic. It becomes absolutely essential to have a complementary system or subsystem in place to deal with the problems that occur in spite of everyone’s best efforts to avoid them. An excellent example is an airline’s baggage handling system. The system handles over 100 million pieces of luggage per year under many types of conditions and loses, damages or misroutes fewer than one percent of these. Yet it is backed up by a sophisticated baggage recovery system and an effective compensation system that minimize the impact of failures that do occur. The system is called by many names – or sometimes by none at all – but it is always present in one form or another.
