RETAILERS FORUM
WHAT A GREAT
month this is in our industry. August is one of the busiest months for wholesalers and retailers between
Attending the hottest shows and starting to gear up for both backto-school and the holiday selling season. Our company sponsors 7 major trade shows this month and our staff will be busy handing out this month’s issue at our booths and at the front entrances. The trade show is an integral part of your businesses success. OUR magazines are available at 55 trade shows during the year, the largest circulation of any trade magazine servicing the industry and we’re proud to promote these shows as a great resource for finding new merchandise and suppliers to help your business flourish. WITH the summer half way gone, now comes the time that strikes fear into kids around the world: back-toschool.” Most retailers are up and running with their displays and if you’re not, you need to be. Reports just in show that many big box stores started the school selling season the week after the schools just closed in early July. Insane! YOUR store needs an action plan for both back-to-school and the holiday sales season. Don’t
procrastinate with your merchandise plans and be a day late and a dollar short. Careful planning and shopping will get you the best deals and the hottest products. WE will soon be coming into our busiest seasons so planning now will pay off with greater profits. MANY stores have discounted their prices which have cut into profit margins. A better idea than deep discounting is to use your overstocked goods as promotions. But one, get one free or half off. Or if you have too many of an item, offer it free with every $50 or $100 purchase. You get the idea. Clean out the inventory. If it has been on the shelves for a year, it isn’t going to sell. This is costing you money and you need to move it. SHOPPERS like free things. So, offering premiums is a great way to increase sales. The more the shoppers buy, the more free things they get. It’s like magic. And you’re moving old stock, it’s costing you only wholesale prices and not cash out of the register. Be creative and your business can prosper and sales increase.

X HITS THE SPOT
SOMETIMES it takes a village close a deal. XiT! had been a long time advertiser back in the 80’s and 90’s with heat transfers and as the market changed they worked on developing expanding their lines. Lo and behold, over a decade and a half later they are announcing to the world their new line of Pre-Printed T-Shirts. All of your favorite designs from their heat transfer line already set up on fast-selling ready-to-go tee shirts. HOW worth the wait is this! There are thousands of great designs including rhinestones, neons and sequins with all popular sayings and styles. The company has a low one dozen minimum and allows mixing any combinations. And, how does $7 sound, and $2 more for 2XL? THIS new line was a long time coming... and now it’s here!
COUNTRY CLUB QUALITY

Survey Shows 3% Growth Expansion
IN every state of the union retailers and online sellers are concerned about one major aspect of their business... sales! According to a new Bloomberg study of economists the U.S. economic expansion will grow around 3% within the next yearly period. According to the reports the advances have been steady and while there may not be major headwinds there are also only very minor challenges appearing. This is excellent news for retailers moving towards the holiday sales season. THE report cites lower jobless claims and progress in the employment market. There is also accelerated consumer spending which is projected to grow just under 3% next year after climbing slightly over 2.2% in 2014. The detractors from the good news cite elevated prices at the supermarkets and gas stations that can create a risk to these report numbers and predictions. WITH the federal government spending levels set through September of 2015 and the debt limit suspended until March 2015 lawmakers have other issues to focus on and these big factors that can sway the economy will not come into play. Apparently the sentiment is that Washington can’t screw this up like last year!
Back To School Sale Projections
MANY of our businesses count on the billions of dollars spent on back to school merchandise and it is the time of the year when we start stocking and selling that merchandise. Many big box stores already started rolling out the back to school merchandise in July, while almost every store will have the selling season in full swing by the time you are reading this report! THE stores who started early are offering special discount promotions to kick off the season. With consumers looking to save money and get good deals many were enticed to these early sales and this year the shopping had started over two months before schools will open. There’s nothing more depressing for a kid to run from their school at the final bell signaling summer recess with thoughts of summer fun on his mind, only to be put into the mini van that very same weekend to drive to the store to stock up on school supplies. Oh, the inhumanity of it all! Regardless of whether the shopping is done early or within the next few weeks, the season promises to bring over $72 billion dollars worth of sales into retailing outlets. Make sure that your store gets it’s piece of the profits!
Retailing Tidbits
MAYBE your business needs drone delivery to make better profits and stay competitive. The mega giant Amazon has asked the FAA for permission to let it ramp up their development of delivery drones that can fly up to 50 miles per hour. I always found this funny when people talk of flying cars in the future also. Most people drive horribly - and now little flying objects dropping bags of dog food from the sky on our doorsteps! Maybe I’m old and out of touch, but this seems to be the stupidest idea I have heard lately. The reality is that toy drones have been flying around, people have been getting hurt and having idiots at Amazon flying products through the air is just idiotic. By the way, did I mention it’s a stupid idea? SHOPPING for your casket at the mall has just become easier. Forest Lawn cemetery got a genius idea to open a funeral store kiosk at the Galleria Mall in Glendale, California. You can pick up an Annie’s Pretzel and make your funeral arrangements. Maybe a drone can fly your body over to the cemetery too!

ASD VEGAS SHOW BRINGS BUYERS & SELLERS TOGETHER UNDER ONE ROOF AT LVCC
1 7 • A U G U S T 2 0 1 4
T
he leading wholesaler and supplier brands will come together at ASD Las Vegas August 3rd-6th in a distinct trade show experience for thousands of exhibitors in the style and beauty, jewelry, gift, toy, and value categories.
In addition, the show will offer seminars on topics of interest to the current retail environment including social media, search engine strategies, e-commerce and global sales strategies. All seminars will take place on site at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The ASD shows provide a unique environment where buyers and sellers come together to do business. By having the entire show under one roof at the Convention Center it makes it convenient for attending buyers to cover more exhibits and spend more time with the exhibitors to make their purchases. The show continues to evolve and improve by separating product categories such as gift, toy, fashion and general merchandise making it easier than ever for buyers to pinpoint specific areas to see the products they are interested in.
For over 51 years, ASD Las Vegas has been serving the unique community of buyers and sellers in the wholesale and mass retail arenas. The show will take place from August 3rd-6th at the Las Vegas Convention Center and is expected to draw nearly 40,000 attendees including large chain retail stores, independent retailers, online retailers, distributors, boutique franchisers, mall carts and kiosks. The show offers the most comprehensive selection of general merchandise under one roof in the country.
Forum Publishing Company, who will be celebrating our 33rd Anniversary, is a proud Media Sponsor of the ASD Las Vegas Show and invites attendees and exhibitors to visit our booths at the show.

Starting your OWN BUSINESS
A U G U S T 2 0 1 4
SPREADING THE WEALT L H LT Your most productive employees will expect to share in their own profitability. Nothing is more discouraging than when one good salesperson “makes up” for three mediocre ones, and knows it. If your company is doing well, but your star employee isnʼt getting his or her fair share, and knows it, you are courting disaster. That personʼs morale will sink, his productivity will decline, and he will start to look for opportunity elsewhere. How much salary is enough? As I said before, it depends on age and circumstances. It also depends on what the employees thinks he or she is “worth.” Corporate employees tend to be worth more than small business employees F because national and international corporations O make more money. (Iʼm talking about successful R corporations, of course.) U M What an employee is really worth is a percentage
of the total profit that he or she generates for your business. At the minimum, anyone on your payroll should “sell” enough to pay his or her own salary. The good ones will pay their own salary and contribute to yours. The good ones expect to be rewarded for high performance. If you are carrying a lot of poor performers on your payroll, you wonʼt be able to hand out these rewards, because the profits your stars generate make up for those other folks. Donʼt tell your star salesperson that if he “wants to earn more, just sell more,” unless you, as the owner, are doing things to make this possible, and the economy is in good shape (people are buying what you have to sell). At some point he will sell all that is possible to sell in an eight-hour day. Unless you introduce a popular new product or raise your prices, your employee has peaked with your current inventory or product line. Be honest. Be honest with yourself first. Then youʼll be honest with your employees. The best ones are worth keeping. Put them on a regular salary that compensates them for their value to your company. If someone performs tasks other

Itʼs hard to know how 7 0 much money the editor of a magazine is worth • since there are no diA rect sales to measure. U But if the content of the G magazine enables the U owner and sales force S T to sell advertising to support the publication, 2 0 the editor (and art di1 rector and production 4 assistant) are worth a percentage of the income the company generates. Lots of staff support jobs arenʼt directly related to sales. But if you had to do all the work your bookkeeper or secretary does, and you as the owner are the companyʼs primary salesperson, then you have to determine worth in another way: How much
less could you sell if you had to do those jobs? And what would it cost you in management time that might cause you to be less effective if you had to do those jobs? And what would it cost you in management time that might cause you to be less effective if you had to do those jobs? Remember, when you started, you did everything. As your business can afford it, you hire help so you can spend your time more productively. These staff people become part of the overhead, like rent and utilities. Their presence enables you and your other salespeople to be more effective, which generates income and profits. These support people are “worth” a percentage of the total profitability of your company because they enable you to do things to generate income, rather than handle so many necessary, but not revenue-producing, chores.

Limit Your Payroll
Donʼt hire support personnel too soon. Again, if you are just starting, you have to be your own secretary and bookkeeper. Yo Y u have to limit your payroll to the number of people who have skills that will let you run your business. Yo Y u must be your own salesperson even if it isnʼt one of your skills, when you start. No one else will work as hard or as long to build your business as you (and possibly your family). Yo Y u should do your own bookkeeping because if you hire someone too soon, you will lose touch with your business. Yo Y u will be so busy trying to get clients that you wonʼt have time to look at the books; and since someone else will be doing them, you wonʼt understand the necessity of doing so. Yo Y u have to do the books; you
must know how much money your business is generating every day. Yo Y u must be in touch with receivables, payables, and cash flow. If you donʼt have decisions based on the assumption that everything is fine all the time. This is never true. And itʼs especially never true for a company just starting out.

HIRE ONLY THE PEOPLE YOU NEED
When you start, hire only those people whose skills will enable you to keep your business in operation. Do as much of the work as you know how; and do all of the managerial functions – record keeping, bill paying, capital expenditure deci-
sion-making. As the business prospers, you must reward those people who helped you launch your company. Donʼt hire more people because you donʼt want to do your own bookkeeping. Yo Y u need to put that money into the paychecks of the people who got you where you are, because when they started with you they took a big risk, and they probably accepted a salary that was a lot less than they are “worth.” The risk they took was that you might fail. They need monetary evidence that you are not failing. They need regular raises as your profitability increases. They have become highly skilled since you hired them. They are part of the reason that you have stayed in business this long. That means they are of value, and money will keep them in your employ a little longer.

much capital you will need, assume youʼll pay cash on delivery. Itʼs best to calculate your money needs on a worst-case scenario – what if no one buys what you have to sell? What will it cost to open your doors for business?
While youʼre asking about prices, also ask about terms. Will you have to pay cash or make payments over time? But to determine how

Money I Need to Live On
If you have savings, or a working spouse who can support you both, put zero here. Ta T ke nothing out of your business until it can afford to pay you, and youʼll have an advantage over people who are trying to make a living right away by going into business for themselves. Yo Y uʼll give your business a little breathing room. Investing in a business doesnʼt always have to be in money or personal assets (like your home computer or desk). Y u can inYo vest your
time. If you have to earn a living right away, figure out how much you need just to get by. If you are turning an avocation (part-time income-producing hobby or profession) into a full-time business, you will know how much you can expect to earn based on the businessʼs track record. Still, if you plan to rent a storefront, you will also have new expenses. The principle of paying yourself what the business can afford to pay still applies.
PAYROLL
When you start, you should use primarily your own time to produce and/or sell your products. Hire only those people who have skills you donʼt have that will enable you to start a business. Pay market rates – the least you can for qualified people. continued..

Donʼt try to do without a CPA P unless you are PA one or have a strong background in accounting (or the law). Itʼs easy to forget tax time when you are running a new company. If you get better at figuring out these forms and are good at A remembering when to pay, then do it yourself U G and fire your accountant. U S Production Equipment T 1 0 0 •
2 Iʼve separated 0 this from office 1 4 equipment to distinguish the essential from the optional. “Production equipment” refers to ma-
chinery or tools youʼll need in order to run your business or produce your product. A baker needs an oven and a refrigerator, a typesetter needs a computer; a retail store needs a cash register. This doesnʼt imply newness or stateof-the-art, necessarily – just what you need to stay competitive in the industry. A publishing company does not have to have a computer or a printer. This work can be subcontracted. But you should analyze the cost of doing so versus the cost of having your own equipment. Select whichever is less or will produce a higher return. YOUʼLL HAVE TO REEVALUATE YOUR NEEDS OVER TIME. YOU MIGHT WANT TO ADD PRODUCTION EQUIPMENT TO YOUR BUSINESS GRADUALLY.

In my typesetting business, I subcontracted photocopies until I had a high enough demand to justify purchasing my own equipment and supplies. I also bought a used camera, which I had to hand-crank to set the enlargements and reductions. Push-button, motorized machines were available, but I couldnʼt see any revenueproducing benefit.
and I sat on a phone book for three years. I used profits to buy a cushiony swivel chair. My furniture was hand-built by a friend of my partner. Most of my file cabinets and supply shelves were garage-sale finds. As I earned profits, I replaced only what needed replacing. I didnʼt think sitting on the phone book was reasonable, but garage-sale cabinets still held my paper and pencils just fine. Consider this: What if you fail? How much stuff 1 0 do you need to make your business work? 4 What other stuff is for your creature comfort or Y ur • just for show? And is anyone looking? Yo front office may command matching furniture, A so customers donʼt get the impression yours is U a fly-by-night operation. But the back shop G U could do with less. Spend most of your start-up S capital on things that will generate income; very T little on things for show. Yo Y u donʼt need expen2 sive wallpaper, or $50 ferns hanging from the 0 ceiling. Bring things from home to decorate 1 your office. If the display is an integral part of 4 making the sale, like Guyʼs The Ringmaker, fine walnut cabinets may be appropriate. But oak cabinets stained to look like walnut will have the same impact on the customerʼs perception of your merchandise. If you can make deliveries in your old truck, donʼt rush right out to buy the
latest model delivery van. Use your excess profits for that at some future time. On the other hand, donʼt be so cheap that your employees get discouraged. A broken chair can cause back problems; poor lighting, eye strain. Be realistic.

The cute storefront on a side street near the 1 0 major shopping center downtown may offer 6 cheap rent. But the mall sells high foot traffic. • Ask yourself: Is what Iʼm selling so unusual or so needed that people will seek me out no matA ter where I locate; U or am I offering a G U product or service S similar to (though T better than) the oth2 ers so that high ex0 posure will be of 1 greater value? Walk 4 through the shopping malls and look at what is there: clothing, shoes, jewelry, and lots of food. Why are they
all there? Because thatʼs how the public has learned to shop for those items. They want to look at what every store has to offer, then select their favorite, or the best buy. Consider the businesses on Main Street or in neighborhood strip malls and storefronts. Some have been there since Main Street was built; theyʼve employed three generations and own the building. Overhead is now zero, customers are regular, and they are dedicated to downtownʼs Main Street. They donʼt count. Look at the others: photocopy shops, one-of-akind gift and specialty clothing stores, and more food places. Consider how a Main Street location, a block or two away from the cityʼs two shopping malls housing some 200 stores, works for these businesses.

Well, people in offices need to eat. So itʼs likely 1 0 that theyʼll go to the closest restaurant for those 8 thirty minute to an hour breaks. Photocopy shops service of• fices, too. They A locate near office U buildings and towG ers; customers U are attracted by S T proximity. Specialty shops sell 2 0 such unusual 1 merchandise that people will seek them out 4 wherever they are. “Unusual” can mean quality, product, or even price. Thatʼs why discount shopping warehouses have become so popular in the west. They offer members a huge variety of goods, at low prices, with lots of free parking, and they require a commute of some distance.
Which category does your business fit? What is the competition doing? Where do you need to locate to be competitive? Cheapest isnʼt always best. Look around, then call landlords or leasing agents and talk with them. Ask not only about rental prices, but also what your landlord will do, if anything, to attract people to the location. On Main Street, Salt Lake City, promotions are sponsored by a merchantʼs tax, which pays for an organization called the Central Business Improvement District (CBID). This group puts colorful banners on the lamp posts and helps sponsor parades and downtown events. The Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Retail Merchants Association are supported by membersʼ dues. They also sponsor downtown promotions, like sidewalks sales and social functions.
