MINISTER ’S F OREWO RD
BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE
I
am delighted to have the opportunity to contribute the foreword to the Irish Packaging Yearbook & Directory 2009 and to congratulate everyone who has been involved in the production of such a high quality publication. The packaging industry in Ireland is a vibrant one and the road to market is dependent on companies devising appropriate business models utilising their capability of people, equipment and process technology to develop, differentiate and deliver solutions to customers achieving profitability and a return on investments. The packaging industry has undergone significant restructuring to enable it to compete in a most difficult and ever-changing competitive marketplace, constantly influenced by many factors and driven by retailers and customers continually driving down prices. Our current focus is on building capabilities and competitiveness with the key objective of accelerating export growth. While the key export market is the UK, companies are now targeting the Eurozone and are working with Enterprise Ireland offices in Paris, Dusseldorf, Brussels, Amsterdam and Stockholm.

turing sectors. The creation of a National Print and Packaging Forum recognises the determination of Irish companies to succeed in a challenging environment by offering competitive customer solutions. Supply chain management has become key for companies competing in the industry. The value chain is complex and impacted by continual advances in machine and process technology and by the world wide web.
GREEN PACKAGING
There are growth opportunities in green packaging such as recyclable materials, supply chain efficient packaging such as shelf ready solutions, food safety packaging and convenient packaging, as well as new materials such as nanofilms, edible coatings and film. Ethical concerns over sustainability have led to an increase in the use of glass, metal and plastic as packaging material. The emerging cleantech industry is providing opportunities for niche companies. This is a dynamic time to be involved in the packaging sector in Ireland as it strives to market its products successfully. Those involved in the sector must be aware of changing trends and new developments in their business to ensure an appropriate response to new challenges in the sector. In this context, I am sure that the Irish Packaging Yearbook and Directory 2009 will provide excellent, up-to-date information to the industry.
PRODUCTIVITY INCREASES The packaging industry has experienced significant increases in productivity, resulting in very competitive offerings. The packaging industry serves the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, healthcare, public procurement and industrial sectors. These sectors account for 84% of turnover in the industry and packaging forms a component of the exports of many manufac-

ALUMINIUM FOIL
THE FACTS ABOUT FOIL

luminium foil products provide innovative solutions for food, drink, healthcare and pharma markets and feature pouches, stick-packs, dispensing mechanisms, material structures and lidding materials, among others. Furthermore, aluminium foil – with its absolute barrier effect to protect the filling and avoid food spoilage – plays an important role in today’s sustainability discussion. Commenting on the latest innovations of the foil sector in Europe, Hilka Bergmann, Director of Packaging Research at EHI Retail Institute in Germany, said: “My greatest impression is the energy and versatility of the alufoil packaging sector. Not only has the sector demonstrated its hunger to create real innovations, it has done so with an understanding of the need to provide ever more consumer convenience.” The European average recycling rate for alufoil trays and semi-rigid containers has reached 40%, according to figures compiled by EAFA. Used in markets such as ready prepared meals, bakery products, pet foods and

takeaway foods, alufoil trays and containers are a consumer-friendly and infinitely recyclable material. The average recycling rate of 40% proves that real progress is being made across Europe, and there is still the opportunity to improve. The recycling figures, married to continuous light weighting through down-gauging of material, make alufoil trays a sustainable packaging option, in addition to their modern and convenient features.

RESOURCE EFFICIENCY Most consumers are completely unaware of the amount of food they throw away (identified as over 30% by WRAP, UK). Instead, consumers often focus on what they see as ‘wasteful’ packaging. However, consumers will surely have a better understanding, and at the same time stop berating packaging, if they appreciate its role both in the prevention of waste and ensuring product safety. Nonetheless, the pressure on the packaging sector to examine its environmental impact has never been greater. Thanks to a series of Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) for food products conducted on behalf of EAFA, it has been demonstrated that packaging is a net saver of resources. In the past, many packaging studies have concentrated on material comparisons and consequently have not

SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT
MANAGING THE PACKAGING SUPPLY CHAIN
R
ecent years have seen an increased focus on the supply chain issues associated with product packaging. This is partly a result of the relatively high proportion of total cost which packaging represents for many products. A key focus in this regard has been on the desirability of integrating packaging operations more closely with other links in the wider supply chain. Moreover, the recent focus on the need for greater environmental sustainability in all products and associated processes has given developments in this area a renewed impetus. However, despite its existence for almost three decades, the phrase ‘supply chain management’ (SCM) is still widely misunderstood. There is evidence of differences in understanding between different industrial sectors, across different geographical areas and amongst practitioners from different functional backgrounds. The National Institute for Transport and Logistics (NITL) has developed a definition of SCM based on the ‘Four Fundamentals’. This represents an attempt to concisely, yet comprehensively, define the essence of SCM as it has evolved over recent years. This short article introduces this definition with specific reference to some of the current strategic challenges faced by the Irish packaging industry.
Edward Sweeney, Director of Learning at NITL, explains the ‘Four Fundamentals’ of Supply Chain Management and their application to the packaging industry.
The increasingly international nature of markets and companies has resulted in many packaging providers becoming part of large and complex international – indeed, often global – supply chains. In addition, the potential benefits associated with emerging electronic commerce technologies provide the potential to simultaneously improve customer service levels and to reduce supply chain costs. These factors and others have sharpened the focus on the need for improvements in all aspects of supply chain performance. The ‘Four Fundamentals’ are vital to the continuing profitability of the companies in all parts of any product supply chain, including packaging providers.
FUNDAMENTAL ONE
• •
‘Fundamental One’ relates to the overall objectives of SCM. These are concerned with: Meeting or exceeding customer service requirements in the market; Optimising total supply chain costs and investment.
Both are self evidently important. As with all other links in the supply chain, downward pressure now exists on costs (such as purchasing costs, production costs, transport costs and customer service costs) in the packaging sector. Simultaneously, customer service requirements are becoming more and more demanding.
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
FUNDAMENTAL TWO
It must be recognised that a product is delivered to the ultimate customer through a complex interaction of several companies on the way. The manufacturer’s ability to give the customer what they want, when they want it, at the price and quality that they want, is not just determined by the efficiency and effectiveness of the manufacturer’s own operation. Inefficiencies anywhere in the supply chain will reduce the chances of the manufacturer successfully competing against other suppliers. Without a proper focus on the overall management of the total supply chain, therefore, a company will never achieve true competitive advantage.
‘Fundamental Two’ recognises that a supply chain is

SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT
only as strong as its weakest link. This is as true in all industry sectors and requires that raw material suppliers, distributors, manufacturers, retailers and others work together in new and innovative ways. It further requires that barriers between the internal functions and activities of packaging providers be tackled.
ABOUT
THE
AUTHOR
EDWARD Sweeney is Director of Learning at NITL, where he has overall responsibility for all aspects of training and education provision. He is also active in research and carries out projects on many aspects of SCM on behalf of client companies.
FUNDAMENTAL THREE ‘Fundamental Three’ is concerned with the efficient and effective management of material, money and information flows throughout the supply chain. The latter (i.e. management of information flows) is of particular importance. Significant investment in information and communications technology (ICT) in the packaging industry in recent years bears testament to this.
ENHANCING SHAREHOLDER VALUE In short, the potential exists across the industry to significantly enhance shareholder value through the adoption of SCM thinking. The increasingly demanding marketplace, particularly in the midst of the current economic volatility and turbulence, brings its own particular challenges but these are not insurmountable. Rather, they require that creative SCM strategies be developed, and then executed superbly, with strong attention to detail.
FUNDAMENTAL FOUR Finally, ‘Fundamental Four’ requires companies, particularly in an environment where outsourcing has become more common, to re-appraise both internal and external customer/supplier relationships.

2009 CARTON AWARDS LAUNCHED
P
ditional Pro Carton sphere, such as Russia, Romania, Poland and Canada. “The overall quality of the entries once again impressed the judges greatly and the judging process in 2008 took longer than usual, with a greater level of discussion, as it was more difficult than normal to select the winners,” noted a Pro Carton spokesperson. “It is now an established fact it seems that the confectionery and beverages categories are the most well represented. The other categories were all represented but once again we failed to attract a level of entries in the tobacco category that is required for real judging and so no award was made in this category in 2008.”
ro Carton, in association with ECMA, recently launched the 2009 Carton Awards. This annual event is now in its 13th year and has consistently showcased the skills of carton manufacturers and designers since its inception. The format of the awards will remain much as it has in previous years, with a variety of categories in which entries will be judged. However, this year in response to popular demand, an additional category has been added. This will cover large volume cartons and can come from any type of end use. The aim is to attract entries and then judge them in an area which has not in the past had a very high profile in the awards. The judging panel will remain the same as in 2008 with Satkar Gidda of Siebert Head chairing the panel. He will be joined by Pascal van Beek of Unilever, Guido Brosius of Carrefour and Burgunde Uhlig from the German women’s magazine, Brigitte, reflecting the full carton supply chain: a designer, a brand owner, a retailer and one representing the view of consumers. The 2008 Carton Awards saw a very high number of entries, including entries from countries outside the tra-

SUSTAINABILITY The issue of sustainability was high on the agenda, following the introduction of a special award for sustainability in 2007. “This topic is very high in the packaging agenda and cartons, being made from a fully renewable resource, are perfectly placed to offer advantages in this respect to packaging buyers and specifiers,” noted the spokesperson. Examples were entered that showed reductions in weight with no loss of performance, adaptation of designs that removed multi material packs and replaced them with 100% cartonboard designs and also the total replacement of other material with cartonboard, with no overall loss of performance and an improvement in the print quality and appeal at the point of sale. “With about 75% of all purchasing decisions made in front of the retailer shelf, cartons offer a level of appeal and attraction that is unmatched by other materials,” boasts Pro Carton. “They act more and more as an advertising material and with other forms of advertising becoming ever more fragmented, cartons offer brand owners and retailers the best opportunity to promote their brands and products.”
CARTON OF THE YEAR The overall Carton of the Year award winner for 2008 was won by the Smirnoff single black carton, which is produced by CD Cartondruck AG for Diageo in Poland. The judges were astonished with the spectacular finish and the overall appearance of this carton. “The range of techniques used to produce this carton were of the highest possible quality and it demonstrated clearly the super high quality that can be achieved using cartonboard,”

this added another dimension to its appeal to consumers. In a market where instant shelf appeal is so critical, the judges felt that this carton with its well known design, beautifully manufactured, would create great interest and attract consumers. In addition, a new design of fitment inside to hold the bottle worked well and was part of the overall carton that did not require a second piece, thus making filling simpler and more efficient.
CONFECTIONERY Estuche Grand Class, produced by Alzamore Packaging in South Africa for Tiendas de Alimentacion, was the winner in the Confectionery category. The jury felt that the carton was perfectly suited to its contents. It was simple to open and as the lid was removed, it opened up to make it simple to share the chocolates. The carton was printed on both sides and the outer surface was well printed with bold graphics that would make the product stand out at the point of sale.
BEAUTY & COSMETICS Johnny Walker Black Label’s 70/75cl carton, produced by Nampak Carton Europe for Diageo, was the winner of the Beverages category.
The winner in the Beauty & Cosmetics was Collagen 700, produced by CD Cartondruck AG for Soraya SA. This carton, particularly in terms of the graphic design and colours, was felt to be perfectly suited to the markets it was made for in Eastern Europe. Bold colour enhanced by silver make the carton appealing and attractive and this element is vital in a market where so many products are seeking to appeal to consumers at the point of sale.
noted the jury in their comments.” It had a most innovative and effective opening that was simple to use and the bottle was easy to remove. In addition, the carton closed automatically when the bottle was put back.” They felt that even in the high quality world of drinks packaging this carton would really stand out on the shelf and, as a result, attract great attention.
MOST INNOVATIVE DESIGN The winner of the Most Innovative Design or New Use of Cartonboard award was Mori di Luce of Spain, produced by Cartografica Pusterla SpA for Duca di Salaparuta. None of the jury had ever seen a pack of this type before and felt, therefore, that it was a truly innovative design. The simple way the carton is opened by removing the band and then unrolling the pack created a surprise but was intuitive. They felt that despite it being comparatively lightweight, protection would be assured and the quality of the print and finish was perfect in the competitive beverages market, where it would certainly appeal to consumers. They also felt that in view of its innovative design, it would appeal as an impulse or gift purchase.
BEVERAGES Johnny Walker Black Label’s 70/75cl carton, produced by Nampak Carton Europe for Diageo, was the winner of the Beverages category. The outstanding print quality of this carton stood out for the judges. In addition, the various finishes used gave the carton a special feel and

Food’ category, with the judges praising its instant shelf appeal, noting how the matt finish and bold colour combination will attract shoppers and demonstrate sophistication.
Perseco’s ‘Clamshell’, produced by Van Genechten Packaging, took the Sustainability award.
PHARMACEUTICAL Syngenta Crop Protection’s ‘One Dose Packaging’, produced by Limmatdruck/Zeiler, was the winner in the pharmaceutical sector, with the judges particularly impressed by its innovative opening. As this product is potentially dangerous and needs to be used in measured portions, the design is a combination of a pouch containing the product and a cartonboard sleeve that protects the pouch and carries the necessary information. However, the opening system is very practical, safe and simple. Tearing the top of the carton opens the pouch at the same time, so that the product can then be poured safely from the pack.
Marks & Spencer’s Speciality Tea range, produced by Boxes Prestige Ltd, was the winner in the ‘All Other Food’ category, with the judges praising its instant shelf appeal, noting how the matt finish and bold colour combination will attract shoppers and demonstrate sophistication.
ALL OTHER NON-FOOD TVS Spa’s ‘Linea Forno Tia’, produced by Box Marche Spa, was the winner in the ‘All Other Non-Food’ category. A perfect example of how packaging can add value to a product, the product itself is comparatively simple, yet the design of the packaging highlights certain elements of the product that will make it much more appealing at the point of sale.
SHELF READY & DISPLAY PACKAGING Angelini Francesco Acraf Spa’s ‘Espositore da banco girevole Tantum Verde per pastiglie’ was the winner in the Shelf Ready & Display Packaging category. The whole purpose of display packaging is that it attracts the eye of the consumer and displays the product effectively. This clever construction allows for four different products to be held – one in each part. Individual packs from each container can easily be pulled out by the consumer and they can also be simply refilled from the top. It takes up a minimum of space and as it revolves, it is also easy for consumers to select the product they wish.
SUSTAINABILITY AWARD Finally, Perseco’s ‘Clamshell’, produced by Van Genechten Packaging, took the Sustainability award. By changing the type of material used in its construction, the overall weight of the carton has been reduced by about 40%. This has been achieved with no loss of functionality nor of print quality and in a sector where vast quantities of these cartons are used, the understanding and implementation of environmental issues is clearly demonstrated.
ALL OTHER FOOD Marks & Spencer’s Speciality Tea range, produced by Boxes Prestige Ltd, was the winner in the ‘All Other

GS1 IREL AND
INTEGRATING THE SUPPLY CHAIN
T
he term “upstream”, when used in a supply chain context, refers to the relationships between manufacturers, their raw materials and packaging suppliers. Since the late 1970s, the use of GS1 standards in industry has considerably reduced costs in the downstream supply chain. The use of unique product numbering, pallet labelling, barcode scanning and electronic business messaging have streamlined supply and demand chains and improved traceability globally. More recently, RFID is being used to track product and exchange information on higher-value goods.
and Australia, with multinationals like Unilever, Kraft, Nestlé, P&G, Crown, Smurfit Kappa Group and many more realising the benefits. The initiative is made possible by the use of standards, specifically GS1 standards in eCommerce. GS1 Ireland is ready to support member trading partners to implement this Global Upstream Supply Initiative (GUSI). A simple ‘Plug & Play’ suite of implementation tools has been developed which includes an integration model, the business case outline and the implementation guide for each of the pre-determined electronic business messages. Given the present economic climate in Ireland, competitiveness in industry is a key challenge, the adoption of GUSI is seen as an opportunity to add efficiency and gain advantage on competitors. Many of the operational and financial benefits are outlined below. The un-measured benefit is in the improvement of the trading relationships as participant companies learn to trust one another with their inventories and forecasts.
Barry Spellman, GS1 Ireland, on the benefits of implementing the Global Upstream Supply Initiative for manufacturers and suppliers.
THE CASE FOR INTEGRATION The development of the global supply chain, as well as a wider variety of products, often in smaller quantities, has led to the time between design and delivery to final consumer becoming shorter and shorter. This puts pressure on the “upstream” part of the supply chain and drives the need for integration - more reliability of the information flow and greater visibility of the physical flow.
OPERATIONAL BENEFITS THE GCI RESPONSE
Operationally, GUSI brings transparency into the upstream supply chain.
The Global Commerce initiative (GCI), an international user group consisting of manufacturers, suppliers and retailers, in 1999 turned their attention to the Upstream supply chain and established the Global Upstream Supply Initiative (GUSI). GUSI (the GS1 & GCI Solution) addresses the challenges in supply chain Integration between manufacturers and their suppliers. Upstream integration is about improving the processes by electronically sharing information and improving visibility of demand, demand changes and inventory. The case for implementing the Global Upstream Supply Initiative (GUSI) is compelling. It completes the supply chain integration using GS1 standards from start (raw material) to finish (consumer). It is essentially the eComm solution for upstream supply chain, enabling manufacturers to efficiently manage their incoming material processes more cost effectively. The initiative has been implemented across Europe 12
•
It eliminates paperwork by implementing GS1 standard eComm messages and the ability to scan product into back office systems, in turn significantly reducing admin costs and eliminating data alignment errors.
•
It allows for the reduction in inventory holdings due to the rapid computer notification of actual events (no more waiting for someone to key-in the information).
•
It facilitates a reduced life cycle, as the manufacturer and the supplier have transparency of stock holdings and quality control outcomes.
•
It also allows for easier and more informed changes to bills of material and thus, these can occur more rapidly and lead to a significant reduction in waste.
GS1 IREL AND
•
New products can now have a shorter time-to-market.
• Lead Times reduced by 40-50% (in on-site requirement time).
•
It reduces stock-outs enabling full supply chain visibility, with both inventory held and sales forecasted information available to all.
• Stock-out situation reduction of 10-30%. • Service level increase: now averaging 99.5% customer service level. It is conservatively estimated that cost savings in the region of €1 per pallet are not exceptional. This saving falls on both sides of the supply chain and increases and decreases, based on how standard practices were utilised prior to GUSI implementation. All tools are available from GS1 Ireland at www.gs1ie.org. Manufacturers: call your top suppliers now and start the discussion that will quickly realise real quantifiable cost savings for you and your supplier. Suppliers: don’t wait for your manufacturing clients to call you, be proactive. Insist on savings: implement GUSI now.
FINANCIAL BENEFITS Overall, there are significant financial benefits, mostly in the areas identified in the Operational Benefits. Below are some percentages from the combined case studies collated by GS1 and GCI. •
Inventory levels reduced by between 10 and 30%.
•

COMPANY PROFILE
SMURFIT KAPPA HAS PACKAGING COVERED
S
murfit Kappa Ireland has traditionally been seen as a corrugated packaging specialist, but the company offers much more than that to a range of customers across the island of Ireland. Indeed, Smurfit Kappa Ireland promises ‘total packaging support’ to all its customers. So what does that mean, in real terms, to a potential customer? “Smurfit Kappa is not just about corrugated boxes,” explains Daragh Wall, Marketing Manager, Smurfit Kappa Ireland. “What we bring to the market is a range of packaging and packaging-related services. Smurfit Kappa was traditionally known primarily as a producer of corrugated packaging and boxes because we’ve been doing that for a very long time. However, our product range now encompasses wooden products, foam products, anti-static and other plastic products, aluminium pallets, a range of thermal control packaging solutions and a great deal more besides.” The company operates three major box plants across the country in Cork, Dublin and Lurgan, which specialise in the corrugated box side of the business, as well as five packaging solutions plants, located in Belfast, Cork, Arklow, Dublin and Galway, which produce and supply a huge range of packaging. These five businesses operate under the ‘Smurfit Kappa Packaging Solutions’ brand. “Given the fact that we’re a large group, we have effective purchasing power,” explains Wall. “Therefore, we’re being used by a lot of our customers for everything that they would even loosely term as packaging.” Despite the fact that Smurfit Kappa Ireland is part of a large group, it is structured in such a way that it can meet the needs of any company, large or small. “For major customers, we have the ability and the security to guarantee that we will meet their packaging needs. Security and scale are important to big customers,
Smurfit Kappa Ireland’s promise of ‘total packaging support’ is evidenced by the range and scope of packaging solutions it offers to its ever-expanding customer base.
If Smurfit Kappa Ireland don’t have something that directly meets customer needs, they will help to design it.
because they know we can handle their requirements, whether that is a huge run or a multiplicity of smaller runs,” Wall notes. “At the same time, our plants understand the needs of small companies, because in many ways we are a range of locally-managed small to medium sized businesses.”
FUTURE-PROOFING THE MARKET
Daragh feels that Smurfit Kappa Ireland is well-positioned to address the key needs of its market into the future. “Everybody who is buying packaging in the market now is looking for two key things: cost savings and business stability,” he says. “It’s about driving down costs and ensuring that the company you are buying your packaging from is going to be in business in six months time.” Smurfit Kappa are actively helping customers to reduce their costs with their Packaging Audit Service, which is “very much focused on the drivers of cost, whether it is the unit cost of the packaging itself or the costs associated with packaging: the frequency of delivery, the amount of storage needed, the speed at which your packaging moves through your production lines – everything is included.”
THERMAL CONTROL PACKAGING
Smurfit Kappa Ireland are leading the way in thermal control packaging.
14
One area where Smurfit Kappa Ireland lead the way is in thermal control packaging. Their Galway plant is the only manufacturer of thermal control packaging on the island of Ireland, and is exporting to the UK, Germany, The Netherlands and Russia. This state-of-the-art facility is the result of an exclusive licence agreement between Smurfit Kappa and Envirocooler, a leading provider of Global Cold Chain Compliance solutions that are sciencebased, regulatory compliant and safe for the environment.
COMPANY PROFILE

They are cheaper to clean than plastic pallets. They can also lead to a reduction in insurance premiums, Wall explains: “A lot of insurance companies are demanding higher premiums from companies who hold large stocks of plastic pallets, because they’re flammable and can be a fire risk. Aluminium pallets are inflammable.”
OTHER PACKAGING TYPES The company also carries a large range of specialised wood and foam packaging. “We have excellent purchasing power, so we can often buy wooden crates, specialised wooden pallets and skids, and foam packaging products cheaper than most individual companies, because we buy such a lot of it. We also have very good relationships with our suppliers, many of whom we have been dealing with for more than 10 years, so in terms of design, we can produce solutions very quickly and costeffectively for our customers.” They also carry a large range of edge guards and corner protectors: “These may look like a fairly basic piece of packaging but they can have a significant impact on the load stability and transit strength for our customers. They allow boxes to line up correctly, both with each other and on pallets, and they can make the pallet load much more stable through transport.” Heavy duty and extra large bulk packaging is another area of expertise. “We have a lot of manufacturing capability within Ireland and the group for this type of product, which tends to be more demanding than the normal box business. We have a very good range of A heavy-duty corrugatheavy duty products.” ed pack, designed by Perhaps more importantly, Smurfit Kappa Ireland. if Smurfit Kappa Ireland don’t have something that directly meets customer needs, they will help to design it. “If there is something specific our customers are looking for and it’s not in our current range, we will do everything that we can to find a solution for them. One of the benefits of being part of a large group is that we have the ability to do things that smaller companies can’t. We’re always on the lookout for new products and new ideas.”
Aluminium pallets can be made in any style, without tooling costs, and meet all of the relevant Good Manufacturing Practice requirements of the pharma industry.
“It is targeted at the pharma industry and the biopharma sector in particular, who need to protect their products from temperature variations in the supply chain,” explains Daragh Wall. “Our product range has three key benefits: very simple pack-outs, a single pack configuration for both summer and winter shipping and no pre-conditioning of refrigerated gel packs”. “The biologics sector is growing all the time, so that is a very important market for us. The requirements for this type of product are going to increase, thanks to new product development and regulation, and it is something we see a big future in.”
ALUMINIUM PALLETS AND CRATES Smurfit Kappa are also the Irish agent for Hurtz, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of aluminium pallets and crates. “Certain industries, like the pharma sector or the food sector, require pallets that don’t pick up dirt or bacteria and that can be cleaned”, notes Wall, who summarises the advantages of plastic pallets over their plastic counterparts. -
-
Aluminium pallets can be made in any style without tooling costs, unlike plastic pallets. Aluminium pallets are anti-static. They meet all of the relevant Good Manufacturing Practice requirements of the pharma industry: for example, they don’t harbour bacteria; they are less susceptible to superficial damage. Aluminium pallets are, on average, 30% lighter than plastic pallets, important from a health and safety and handling perspective. They enjoy an increased lifespan, and can be repaired, unlike their plastic counterparts. They are far more robust than plastic when it comes to extreme variations in temperatures.

GLASS
THE CASE FOR RECYCLING
R
ecent reports have questioned whether recycling is really beneficial to the environment. In the case of glass, recycling means: -
-
-
Energy efficiency improvements over the past quarter century have led to a reduction in emissions by nearly half, despite output increasing by over two billion bottles and jars over the same period. The industry continually puts much effort into reducing the weight of its bottles. A more recent trend in the UK is to bulk import products from abroad for filling. This has several environmental advantages. With more wine bottles being produced in the UK, more glass waste is available for collection to make new bottles. As a result of just one project, CO2 emissions have been cut by over 28,000 tonnes per year. Not having to survive long haulage trips means bottles can be lighter. So far, glass packaging weight has been reduced by 11,400 tonnes per year as a result of the wine being bottled in the lighter bottles produced in the UK These efforts are paying dividends. A recent study comparing glass against a plastic PET bottle showed that a lightweight glass wine bottle of 365g with 81% recycled content produces broadly the same amount of greenhouse gas emissions.
The case for the recycling of glass packaging, as presented by the British Glass Manufacturers' Confederation.
Reducing the need for raw materials to be quarried. Some raw materials used to make glass release CO2 when they are melted so if they are replaced by waste glass, it reduces emissions. Waste glass melts more easily than the raw materials: this means that glass furnaces can operate at lower temperatures, improving energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions. As a consequence, if a person recycles just one bottle, it is enough to power a computer for 25 minutes, a television for 20 minutes and a washing machine for 10 minutes.
It is better for waste glass to be used to make new bottles than for any other purpose. However, there is a threat to this success story. Increasingly, amounts of waste glass are not used to make new bottles but used for alternative purposes such as building aggregate. Whilst this is better than it going to landfill, it has been proven time and time again that the most environmentally beneficial use of glass waste is for it to be sent to glass manufacturers to melt into new bottles and jars – 8 billion of which are manufactured every year in the UK, for example. If all the recycled container glass collected and processed was used to make new bottles and jars, it would save 380,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.
NATURALLY SUSTAINABLE Glass also has many intrinsic properties which can help it lay claim to being one of the most sustainable products known. It is made of naturally occurring materials that are not at risk from resource depletion. It is inert. It is infinitely recyclable to the same purity and quality as when created from virgin raw materials. Glass is a monomaterial. “The glass industry takes its social and environmental responsibilities very seriously and will continue to work with retailers, brand owners and consumers to help everyone reduce their own personal carbon footprint and environmental impact, summarises a spokesperson for the British Glass Manufacturers' Confederation.
IMPROVED PRODUCT OFFERING The glass packaging industry works hard to further improve its products. Sustainability and environmental awareness are not just buzz-words, they are key drivers in all aspects of the business ethos.

LABELLING TECHNOLOGY
LOGOPAK’S LABELLING SOLUTIONS
C
Yorkshire-based Logopak has been making big inroads into Ireland, with a number of high profile installations throughout the country.
ontract bottler Norbev, based in Ballymena, has installed the first high speed Logopak 515B90 print & apply labeller to be sold in Ireland, allowing the company to identify shrink-wrapped trays of soft drinks at speeds up to 70 a minute. Smaller than previous Logopak machines and with fewer parts, the new 515 applies 110 x 80mm labels to the side of the trays and is equipped with a scanner to check that codes are readable. “Simplicity, ease of operation and the Logopak reputation for reliability and longevity are major factors in the success of the 515,” explains Wilson Clark, Logopak UK General Manager. Norbev has also installed a fully enclosed Logopak 920PF pallet labeller to apply standard A5, GS1 specification labels on two adjacent faces of the load after stretch-wrapping. This too has integrated scanning to check label legibility. Both systems operate with Logopak's new Synchro-LXS software which uses a combination of automatic downloads from the Norbev host computer and manual data entry by operators to provide the labellers with the label data they require. Running with Synchro-LXS is Logopak's I-Quest software, which allows the whole labelling system to be interrogated and production statistics extracted. Searches can also be made for specific data, trays and pallets on a key identifier basis, such as a product code or production date or time. Contract bottler Norbev has installed the first of “I-Quest is an advanced Logopak's new 515 series traceability tool that can be high speed print & apply used in a number of other labellers to be sold in ways, such as consolidating Ireland. production statistics, vali-
dating shipping manifests or simply to compare elements of production statistics across a plant,” explains Wilson Clark.
IMPROVING EFFICIENCY AT PEPSICO
Another company to benefit from Logopak’s technology is PepsiCo. Their Little Island plant in Cork has raised the efficiency of its pallet labelling operation with four new Logopak print & apply machines, employed to identify loads of soft drinks concentrate, packed in various types of primary container on different, but dedicated production lines. The operation starts with three Logopak 804T applicators which attach pre-printed bar code labels to the body of each pallet, once it has been loaded. These labels, unique to each production line, are read by a

scanner just before pallets enter the stretch wrapper and the data used to look up further data and works order information, from which the main pallet shipping labels are created. Then, after tracking the pallet though the stretchwrapper to the labelling station, the line PLC passes the labelling data to a new Logopak 920PF print & apply machine, which labels the pallet on two adjacent faces. After application, the labels are scanned by an integral scanner in the Logopak applicator head to confirm to the PLC that the pallet has been successfully labelled. The four new Logopak labellers follow the installation of three further Logopak machines, a 920PF pallet labeller and two 804T pallet block labellers, which have been running at the Little Island plant since 2006.
The main machine is a Logopak 920PF print & apply pallet labeller, but there is also a Logopak VLP off-line printer, an automatic scanner and two hand scanners. All run under Logopak Synchro-LXS software, automatically labelling full pallets after strapping and stretch-wrapping. The process starts as pallets arrive for labelling and the automatic scanner reads a bar code on the case or pallet base to identify the pallet to the system. The Synchro-LXS software then automatically collects the correct labelling data from works order documentation and other files held on the site's host computer, sending it to the 920PF print & apply machine for two GSI specification labels to be created and applied. Data is also sent to the VLP, which has a hand scanner connected directly to its controller. This operates in the same manner as the automatic system, with the operator using a screen menu to select which labels to print. The second hand scanner acts as a back-up to the main scanner in the event of a poor read or failure in automatic scanning.
PALLET LABELLING AT SMURFIT KAPPA IRELAND Corrugated board packaging supplier Smurfit Kappa Ireland has bought a new Logopak pallet labelling system for its Cork site, allowing labelling data to be extracted automatically from data held on a central computer.

IRISH PACKAGING DIRECTORY - easyFairs® PACKAGING IRELAND SHOW GUIDE
Welcome To easyFairs® PACKAGING IRELAND 2009 Hello, and welcome to the new easyFairs® PACKAGING IRELAND show. This exhibition marks easyFairs’ packaging show debut in Ireland – although we organise 20 similar shows across Europe – and I’m delighted by how well received our arrival has been by both exhibitors and visitors. Our pre-show research amongst potential visitors indicated that, as there was no Irish show specifically focused upon primary packaging solutions, brands and retailers have in the past been forced to visit events held in Europe and the UK. Not any more! We’ve brought together a wealth of exhibitors across the packaging spectrum – including many of the sector’s leading names – from design consultancies through to suppliers showing new materials, advances in sustainable packaging, and machinery to help companies package products quicker and more efficiently. We also learned that Irish brand managers see packaging as their number one strategy to attract scarcer consumer spending during the recession – so our event focus on packaging innovation and creativity is timely in offering solutions that will create shelf stand-out. As easyFairs is new to Ireland, let me explain our trade show philosophy. At easyFairs® PACKAGING IRELAND, you won’t find ostentatious, overblown stand displays created as brand flag-waving platforms. Instead, ours is a no-nonsense formula dedicated to people who simply want to do business and source new contacts. As all exhibitors operate on a level playing field, with smaller, niche providers on the same footing as multinationals, our events generate a very open atmosphere that is conducive to a freeflow of information, intelligence and ideas. It creates a different kind of feeling, and we’ve seen that across all of our shows in Europe. In addition to a wide range of packaging companies on show, we’ve also compiled a comprehensive learnShops™ educational programme that features seminars being delivered by some of the country’s most influential packaging professionals. Several sessions will be hosted by our show partners Repak, the industry-funded body designed to promote packaging recycling in Ireland.
Supported by
Repak has made giant strides in promoting sustainable packaging across Ireland’s business landscape and ensuring the country meets its EU recycling obligations – and I’m delighted they’re playing a central role in this show. Make sure you go along to the Repak stand, number 77, to enquire about availability of their Free Advice Clinics. So whether you’re looking for new packaging ideas to create brand standout, cost-saving packing technology, or the latest eco-friendly packaging, you’ll find it all here under one roof at easyFairs® PACKAGING IRELAND. WHAT’S ON SHOW… Pharmaceuticals production and packaging specialist Catalent has first-hand experience of the easyFairs® exhibition formula via its UK operation, says business development director Diarmuid Wilson. “Whilst our profile in Ireland is leaflet and carton printing, we’re a one-stop shop for labels as well. Compliance packaging is also a strong element of what we offer,” Wilson noted. “At the show, we’re looking to see a big constituency from within the Irish market that we don’t feel travels over to the UK. As well as flying the flag, we’re conscious of some UK based pharma groups starting to migrate to Ireland; in consequence, here’ll be a lot more local decisions made about the type of packaging to be used, rather than just converting the product as already specified at an offshore location.” Multi-trip polypropylene box manufacturer Killyleagh Box will display its latest transportation alternatives to cardboard boxes. The self-locking containers, which eliminate the need for sealing tape and can be used up to 40 times before being recycled, are collapsed after use and returned to source, where they are refilled. Sales Manager Cliff McCullough, said: “We want to shout our ‘green’ message a bit louder…and feel easyFairs® PACKAGING IRELAND will enable us to achieve that. There are very few trade shows in Ireland where packaging companies can exhibit new innovations, concepts and solutions. I’m delighted that an established trade show organiser is bringing an event to our door that promises a visitor list of senior buyers and decision makers.” Smurfit Kappa Ireland is looking to explore sales
Northern Ireland-based exhibitors are also well represented through Keady corrugated packaging manufacturer Caspac; Globeweigh, specialists in weigh price-labelling equipment for the Irish food industry; Dungannon-based JMC Packaging; and the Killyleagh Box Company.
“IRISH FIRMS FIRST…” Securing a strong local representation across the exhibition floor is critical to the show’s immediate and longer-term development, says Matthew Benyon. “In terms of what we’re looking to achieve, a lot of it’ll be down to the mix of exhibitors taking part. The simplest thing for us to have done would have been to have gone to our existing customers in the UK show and say ‘who wants a crack at Ireland?’ – and we could have filled the floor-plan very quickly. That’s not the point. Instead, we’re targeting Irish companies first, and that’s what we consider to be important. “The other thing is that when you’re building a show, it’s essential to start the process in the right way: getting the right mix of design, packaging print, environmental etc comes before volume. We’d be delighted with 80 companies – and if they’re fresh and innovative, then that’ll be enough for a first show. What is absolutely crucial is to provide the visitors with something that is new. “Our primary aim is to refresh the packaging market on the ground. Hitherto, every time they want to do something, they’ve had to travel to the UK or elsewhere. In fact, not very many of them do come over to the UK. I think it’s partly cultural, partly time and money. I also think that it’s appreciated when you go to them, rather than expecting the converse. Frankly, it’s not something that most organisers would do because they can’t generate enough income out of it; the market’s not big enough for them. It works fine though for the easyFairs® model.” Quantifying the potential visitor attendance is less straightforward to pin down. Quality has supplanted volume as the benchmark for measuring the success of any exhibition these days; nevertheless, creating an

environment conducive for business is still dependent upon foot-fall. “Unless the market tells us otherwise, the plan is to go annually,” noted Matthew Benyon. “What we’re obsessed with is the visitor; we spend a lot of time focusing upon him rather than the exhibitor. It’s quite often the case that the visitor will determine the level of frequency. We’ll know by lunchtime on the first day what we’ve got and where we’re going.”

VISIT OR RESEAR CH easyFairs® has undertaken extensive research amongst over 500 packaging professionals including technologists, marketing personnel and brand strategists --- as well as engineers and warehouse managers -- to assess the need for the PACKAGING IRELAND event. Key findings were as follows: • • • opportunities in addition to its corrugated business, says their Marketing & Product Development Manager Daragh Wall. “We’ll be showing the full range of packaging that we sell into the Irish market, and that we don’t necessarily sell or manufacture anywhere else: for example, our solution for cold chain packaging which we been manufacturing for the past three years under license from US based EnviroCooler, and which we export to Eastern Europe from here. “This is a moulded polyurethane foam product that’s rigid in nature and designed to maintain the contents of the pack in transit at a specified temperature range. It’s highly-engineered and is targeted at the pharma industry, where it’s used for vaccines, biologic medicines, and insulin, which has to be maintained at 28ºC – but which could be modified for use in other sector applications requiring a lesser degree of attention.” UK based Storm Brand Design’s client base already includes a number of Irish food manufacturers, including Dr Oetker and Shamrock Foods (ex-Odlums), as well as the locally represented retail chain, Aldi. According to marketing director Trevor Flannery, easyFairs® PACKAGING IRELAND is a key component within a strategy aimed at establishing an even firmer reach into the local market. “Even though the Irish market might seem to be very accessible, you’ve got to understand it; the differences between the Irish market and the UK market may appear to be subtle, but can in fact be as far apart as the UK and China.”

PRODUCT LAUNCHES Depicton expects to launch its co-extruding tubes product at easyFairs® PACKAGING IRELAND. The fivelayer tube offers superior barrier properties and is designed to offer a packaging solution for oil-based products, such as sun tan creams and tanning lotions, that can suffer discolouration, product migration or degredation with mono-layer tubing. A simple but highly-effective innovation comes from Dublin-based A-Pak Products in the form of Glue Dots. The double-sided adhesive dots, which come in a range of tack strengths and sizes, help secure pallets during transit and are used to attach documentation to shipments. APak will also be showcasing its die-cut labels on A4 sheets – including fluorescent, weather resistant, repositionable and tamper-evident labels – that are designed for in-house short runs using the inkjet, laser, or colour copier printers found in most offices. A recent survey by WRAP – the Waste & Resource Action Programme – revealed that 11% of meat packs were found to have leaky seals. At the show, Jenton International offers a solution to the problem with its new range of Jenton Ariana seal testers which identify and reject leaking packs, allowing them to be resealed and thus reducing waste and the risk of product recalls. Jenton is also showing the BCS range of multi-lane switchable convergers – which the company claims offers the most economical solution for converging a thermoformed batch of packs into a single line – and its eco-friendly banding equipment. Irishpackaging.com brings a splash of colour to proceedings with its decorative packaging and marketing material – its latest printed ribbon, gift card
