SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN USUALLY EQUALS LIGHT, MODEST FURNITURE WITH SUBTLE ORNAMENTATION

In recent years, a dazzling chain of Copenhagen restaurants has put Nordic cuisine on the gastronomic world map. Yet our gratitude to these metropolitan restaurants has nothing to do with the food. In connection with a number of interior design assignments for Michelin restaurants in Copenhagen, Space developed what eventually became the Spine series. Their first creation was a lounge chair, soon followed by a dining chair and a bar stool. In line with several of these successful restaurants, Spine is anchored in Nordic tradition, but with an innovative, personal twist. The simple lines are classically Scandinavian, while the unorthodox details give the furniture a striking new expression. Despite the contrasting elements, the top and bottom still merge into an entity that is quite unique. Space has indulged in quality materials that are handcrafted and give the series an authority that is striking and tangible. Available in black or natural oak and ash, with leather upholstery.

LUCKILY, DESIGN DUO SPACE DIDN’T GET THAT MEMO Spine Collection by Space

It is believed that it was a surplus of wooden pins and dowels in the factory stores that led Børge Mogensen to design the J39 in 1947. Perhaps that was a fortunate coincidence, as today it is one of Denmark’s most sold wooden chairs, and has been in uninterrupted production ever since it was launched. J39 is the obvious choice for everything from canteens to conference halls, churches to private homes, and is popularly known as the People’s Chair. This simple, yet unique chair was inspired by Mogensen’s mentor, Kaare Klint, as well as American Shaker furniture. The curved backrest and hand-woven seat make the J39 a comfortable dining chair in an aesthetically pleasing quality. The subtle design language means that it can be added to an existing interior, or serve as a room’s visual hub. J39 has a solid beech or oak frame; in untreated, soaped, lacquered, or black or white painted finishes, and seat corded with black or natural paper yarn.

THE PEOPLE’S CHAIR J39 by Børge Mogensen

Having won the hearts of the people, Mogensen found new fans in the sixties

THE SECRETARIES OF STATE 2204 and 2202 by Børge Mogensen

Børge Mogensen graduated from the School of Architecture with a clear mission. He wanted to create quality furniture that everyone could afford. Yet 20 years later, he designed the sofas and chairs that now furnish cabinet ministers offices and Danish embassies around the world.

The first of the iconic sofas were released in 1962, followed by many different variations, evolving them into Danish institutions. 2204 is a high-backed wing chair with the 2202 as matching footstool. The set was designed in 1963 and is regarded to be among the most comfortable furniture that Mogensen created.

The chair envelops the body, the wings shut out the world, giving one the peace to read or relax. The chair and footstool are part of the 2200 series that also includes an easy chair and two and three-seat sofas.

It was love at first sight. At the Milan furniture fair in 2011, we caught sight of a sofa that stood out with simple elegance among the many prototypes. Haiku had an exquisite quality about it, with echoes of the Finn Juhl classic, the Poet. We immediately knew that we had to produce it.

The design duo behind it, GamFratesi, are from Italy and Denmark; an unexpected, but surprisingly harmonious, pairing. This is reflected in how Haiku effortlessly combines the simple with the expressive. The contrast repeats in the meeting between the rigid, enclosing shape of the exterior and the softer, more intimate interior.

The name Haiku is borrowed from the traditional Japanese poetry tradition of describing a mood in a few words. In the same way, GamFratesi has used simple means to create a sofa that both suggests a protective function and encourages a sense of expression. The sofa is based on a moulded foam shell, with legs of black lacquered steel, and is available in two and three-seat versions. Both the interior and exterior can be upholstered in a variety of textiles.

DESIGNERS

The projects they have embraced range from interior design to furniture and applied art, as well as installations and art direction. Their starting point often lies in seeking to combine elements that would not obviously match each other. Space has undertaken interior design for some of the most prestigious restaurants in the world, as well as for Georg Jensen, Sony and Lagkagehuset, among others. The Spine collection is Space’s first collaboration with Fredericia.

BØRGE MOGENSEN, 1914-1972 Børge Mogensen was known as the furniture designer who created high-quality furniture at affordable prices for Danish homes. He went on to design some of the most renowned furniture designs of the 1950s and 1960s. An exceptionally productive man, Mogensen’s collection of designs numbers into the thousands. New ideas came to him at any time of the day or night, and were scribbled down on matchboxes, table napkins, creased envelopes, or whatever was at hand. His lifelong mission was to create simple and practical furniture for everyone. Appearance was important, but never at the expense of functionality. He disapproved of colleagues who succumbed to the whims of fashion, ignored functionality or used excessively expensive materials. In the same breath, he defiantly brushed off any criticism for only using wood, his preferred material in all its different embodiments.

Børge Mogensen designs featured at Salone Internazionale del Mobile: 2204 chair, 2202 footstool, 2208 sofa, J39 chair, C18 table and J49 chair.

For Pedersen, much of the fascination of furniture design lies in how 1:1 models can be constructed. This means that you can try out the furniture for yourself and see whether the structure is sound, and if the item is fit for the intended purpose. Among his role models are Charles and Ray Eames for their work in creating designs that match the human body.

GAMFRATESI GamFratesi is Danish architect Stine Gam and Italian designer/architect Enrico Fratesi, who have been designing together since 2006. Their designs are created in the cross stream between the cool Nordic heritage and the more conceptual Italian approach. Their starting point is the Scandinavian tradition, with emphasis on stringent functionality, but they always add an emotional edge. Each piece tells a story, often with a touch of humour. The design process begins in the workshop, where they explore the potential of breaking borders between harmony and chaos in materials, techniques and proportions. FURNID

SPACE Space Copenhagen was established in 2005 by Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou, both graduates of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture. From the outset, they have been known for going against the flow and presenting designs with a very personal expression.

Our cooperation with Thomas Pedersen began at the Copenhagen Furniture Fair in 2002. He presented Stingray, and we were very enthusiastic about it from the start. We were not the only ones either, as the prototype was displayed in our showroom after the fair, and customers were already interested in buying the chair. Pedersen’s style is rather atypical of the Danish tradition, yet what they do have in common is simplicity. In his designs, he combines organic lines with innovative ideas and fluid details.

We cannot say the name Børge Mogensen without also mentioning Andreas Graversen. Designers and manufacturers are always dependent on each other, but in this particular case, Andreas Graversen’s acquisition of what was then Fredericia Stolefabrik in 1955 marked the start of more than just a purely professional partnership. Over the years, the two men developed a strong friendship, fuelled by a common desire to create simple, high-quality furniture with timeless aesthetic appeal. The two men were equally dedicated and passionate, and their partnership was often temperamental, just as any close relationship is. Børge Mogensen was disciplined and dedicated about his work, yet also the life and soul of any party. Børge loved to sit up all night, enjoying the company of good friends, cigars and wine, and his exuberant presence could be overwhelming. Yet no matter how late he stayed up, he was always back in the studio the next day.

FurnID is an ambitious design studio consisting of Morten Kjær Stovegaard and Bo Strange. The two industrial designers joined forces in the belief that the creative process is best stimulated through cooperation and the exchange of ideas. They share the wish to develop useful and relevant designs that attract attention and make a difference, as well as the clear aim of creating friendly products. Until 2010, Sara Vinther Martinsen was also a member of FurnID. FurnID design featured at Salone Internazionale del Mobile: Hook Me Up clothes hanger system. MORE DESIGNS

J49 In his time at FDB, Børge Mogensen designed an extensive range of wooden chairs. The aim was “to create good, highquality functional furniture that was modest in appearance”. One of them was the J49, which is now proudly being reintroduced … with a twist. Now, as then, the chair is made of Mogensen’s favourite wood, beech. The basic model is exactly as it was sold in the 1940s, with clear lacquer. The modern version is also available in painted black and white. The real novelty, however, is an untreated version, which gives the owner the freedom to paint the chair in any colour or pattern preferred, limited only by one’s imagination. Back in 1944, Børge Mogensen probably did not see this coming, but we think he would wholeheartedly agree with a concept that is in keeping with the spirit of everything he did. Mogensen wanted to create design that did not dictate a particular style, but rather supports the owner’s individuality. We believe that he would have been proud of the new J49. Pictured above: J49 hand-painted by London-based Japanese designer Shin Azumi, for the Japan Red Cross’ 11th March Relief Efforts.

SHAKER TABLE Børge Mogensen designed the Shaker table in the 1940s, as head of the development department at Denmark’s FDB, with the ambition of making beautiful high-quality furniture available to everyone. He fulfilled this ambition with the Shaker table, which, together with the popular J39, soon became a big success. It is still one of the Børge Mogensen tables in highest demand. C18 is available in solid beech or oak, with lacquer or soap treatment.

HOOK ME UP Hook Me Up is a new take on the coat stand and was specially designed for an exhibition at the Denmark Design Museum in Copenhagen. By repetition of a single element, it becomes a chain whereby the distance between floor and ceiling is the only factor limiting the number of elements

linked together. The thought is to keep the floor free while creating a clothes hanger that adults and children alike can use. With its striking graphic outline, Hook Me Up is an outstandingly simple, yet powerful, design concept. Hook Me Up is available in black and white veneer, or oak melamine. Hook Me Up fås i sort og hvid laminat eller egemelamin.

1st edition 2012

Our furniture is passed down from one generation to the next. This is naturally due to its enduring quality, but also because the design is eternal in the face of changing tastes and trends. Our new furniture must also stand this test of time. Our fundamental view is that anything is possible in terms of design language, materials and production. No design guides, sales targets or expert panels dictate our choices. Our only requirement is that the design originates from a relevant and functional basic idea. It must also be a delight to the eye – today and forever. We always test new designs by adding the prototypes to rooms already furnished with our classics. Well-designed furniture always fits in. The final decision lies somewhere else though, as a design is only allowed into production if our gut feeling tells us it is right.

Thomas Graversen, CEO
