Poetic Technique – The Metaphor Unlike the simile, the metaphor Becomes the concentration of comparison 'He is a lion in the streets, he was a tower Of ingratitude.' Be sure the reader's sense of things, Is somewhat startled by this powerful tool, But also reign it in or be a fool. Hence She was a veritable pear. Elvis was his hair. These things are not a plus But border on ridiculous. Prepare The mood, as chalice to accept The metaphoric wine and do not mix The beautiful technique with disparate things. Hence He is a lion and a vice which grips. He is a reaper and a sparrow thrush. This bodes no good. But, be yourself a handiwork of man And take the thing in hand. Avoid, like death the tattered, common phrase And always work the edge with self consistency. Carl Estrin
