Where are you next jetting off to?

Where are you next jetting off to?

Where are you next jetting off to?

Canada, most likely. They just reopened the borders, and my family has owned a small cabin on Lake Talon up there for decades that we’re hoping to visit together this summer. It’s a relaxing and isolated retreat into nature.

Since I find airlines a little risky still this year due to the coronavirus, I’ve spent more time at my family’s cabin that’s a little west of Lake Tahoe. It sits on a smaller lake that flows into Desolation Wilderness.

Harbour Island in The Bahamas.

How will you spend your days?

How will you spend your days?

Reading a lot! I love relaxing in a hammock or by the lake with a good book. There are also gorgeous trails up there that are great for hiking and lots of opportunities to fish and swim. Of course, most days will end with a campfire and s’mores!

When I’m at the family cabin, I typically take a walk around the lake, hike up a few trails, kayak during sunset and sit back with some wine and watch the wildlife. There’s a family of bald eagles that like to appear, and that’s always a sight to see and feel blessed by.

I am going to spend two days photographing a fashion designer’s new collection at a few cool locations. Outside of work, I’ll either be spending as much time relaxing on the stunning Pink Sands Beach or showing my client around a few of my favourite spots. I’ll rent a Golf Cart since they are the main way to get around, and it is always fun to explore Dunmore Town. If we have enough time we might catch a boat ride over to the island of Eleuthera.

What are you packing?

What are you packing?

What are you packing?

Not much! The environment in our “campground” is very casual, so mostly T-shirts and shorts, as well as a few pairs of swim shorts. Shoe-wise, I only ever wear sneakers or sandals there. I’ll wear one pair for travel, and the other will be in my suitcase.

What’s a vacation in the woods without some loungewear and some cocktail mixers? I’ve been getting well acquainted with the traditional Mai Tai and Blue Hawaiian drinks in Retreat’s cocktail book, BARSIDE: The World’s Most Iconic Hotel Cocktails.

I travel light! My cameras and lenses are safely packed inside a case, and I have one carry-on backpack that fits all of the essentials for a week of island hopping. Swimsuits and coverups, a beach bag, comfortable sandals, a large beach hat, headphones and my MacBook Pro.

What can’t you leave home without?

What can’t you leave home without?

What can’t you leave home without?

A good book, my phone and my day planner—plus sunscreen and lip balm with plenty of SPF!

A good book! Whether it’s romance, fiction or fantasy, I’m always carrying something with me.

What are you reading?

What are you reading?

Right now, I’m reading The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave and People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry.

At the moment, I am re-reading Jane Austin’s Pride & Prejudice. I am always finding new quotes to write down in my quote journal.

Aside from my camera, sunscreen! As an Australian who grew up in The Bahamas, you learn how important it is to protect your skin. I am either at the beach or out on the boat every weekend.

Editorial Assistant

What are you listening to? I often play slower tracks from my music library on trips, like The Radio Dept. and The Strokes. However, I also like revisiting favourite albums from Lily Allen, Natasha Bedingfield and Haim. And there’s always plenty of Britney Spears on rotation, of course.

Editorial Assistant

What are you listening to? I’ve recently become interested in exploring the works of Joni Mitchell. The song “Both Sides Now” gets me teared up every time.

Where are you next jetting off to?

Where are you next jetting off to?

Where are you next jetting off to?

Right now, my boyfriend and I are hoping to be able to travel to Greece as soon as we can!

I’m looking forward to visiting Aspen, Colorado this year! It’s one of my favourite towns in the country with a one-of-akind nature to explore.

Our next trip is looking to be somewhere in Italy.

I’m hoping somewhere tropical north Queensland but eventually Tulum or somewhere far far away from Australia. I love my home but I’m ready for a scenery change.

How will you spend your days? I like to look at events that are going on or upcoming museum exhibitions/art shows that are happening in the place that I’m visiting. I find the key to a great time is to be up for anything! What are you packing? I always have the essentials: my favourite denim jacket, easy-to-dress-up basic tops, a pair of embroidered heels, Yara Birkenstocks, a midi skirt or day-to-night dress and comfortable shorts! What can’t you leave home without? I never leave for a vacation without double-checking that I have chapstick, my AirPods and a phone charger! What are you reading? I’ve just picked up my next vacation read, Christina Lauren’s The Unhoneymooners. What are you listening to? I love listening to music based on the vibe of the trip. Am I going to Hawaii? Then I am purely listening to anything with beachy vibes. Am I going on a road trip? Then I’m only playing songs that I can sing along with!

How will you spend your days? I’m excited to hike to Maroon Peak, spend time in nature with my friends, go out to restaurants and meet new people. What are you packing? I’m packing quality hiking boots, cozy sweaters and my favourite dress for exploring downtown. What can’t you leave home without? I can’t leave home without my crossbody purse, AirPods, sneakers and FitBit. I’m always ready for a day of walking and exploration, so I make sure to leave the house prepared for adventure. What are you reading? I’m currently reading Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney, the same author who wrote Normal People.

Photographers

How will you spend your days? Most of our time will be spent taking photos, but we usually try and take a day at the end of these trips to relax. What are you packing? Lots of camera gear, it pretty much takes up all our luggage. Then whatever little space we have left we throw in our clothes. What can’t you leave home without? We hate to say it, but our cell phones! What are you reading? We aren’t huge readers, but we do watch a lot of online tutorials. We also love movie nights. What are you listening to? Pretty much all the popular music, any and all genres.

What are you listening to? I can’t get enough of Olivia Rodrigo’s album!

RETREATMAG.COM | 16

Fashion Photographer

How will you spend your days? In the sun making up for the 1.5 years of sun I missed in lockdown and counting! Also hopefully creating some magic on my camera! What are you packing? Bikinis, Bikinis, camera, bikinis. What can’t you leave home without? Headphones, I hate silence and need music at all times! What are you reading? Retreat Mag, of course! What are you listening to? I have such a random selection of music that varies every day. You never know what you’re going to get with me.

Mane

ATTRACTION

Written by Aaron Royce

When suitcase space is at a premium, we usually can’t bring our usual arsenal of products and styling tools for Instagram-worthy hair on vacation. These simple hairstyles go from the plane to out on the town with minimal touch-ups and will keep your mane looking healthy, chic, and completely put together. PHOTOGRAPHED BY IRVIN RIVERA CHANEL

OUAI, leave-in conditioner, $40

Comb your hair to remove any knots, then rub some hair gel on your roots to slick the hair backwards. Twist the hair at your neck’s nape in a tight bun and secure it with bobby pins and an elastic so no strand is out of place.

Tousled Waves

ALTERNA, creme gel, $40

Sleek Bun

Twisted Ponytail

Put part of your hair in a half-up ponytail, then place your hair on either side in a ponytail over that. The style creates a faux braided texture that looks much more intricate than it actually is—simply tie a bow around it for best results! Add some leave-in conditioner before you begin to keep the finish looking glossy and smooth.

Twisting your hair in sections and scrunching them in an upward motion will give you tousled, air-dried waves. Beforehand, comb a mousse from your roots to your ends with either a brush or your fingers to keep a steady hold. If you have space, pack a curling iron for big, bouncy and perfectly styled curls and soft waves.

SCHWARZKOPF, strong styling mousse, $20

Silver Bullet Fastlane Titanium Rose Gold 25mm Curling Iron, $88

RETREATMAG.COM | 25

The simple top knot takes seconds to put together, and you can reduce oiliness in your roots by spraying on dry shampoo beforehand! Simply make a ponytail, divide it into two sections, wrap them around each other and then around your hair tie, and set it in place with a bobby pin.

Make a standard ponytail with a scrunchie, moving its base towards the crown of your head for greater height. To add extra shine, comb or smooth hair oil over your locks and around your ends.

Messy Bun

High Ponytail

Top Knot

R + CO, dry shampoo mist, $28

Separate your hair into three sections, then secure the middle in a ponytail with bobby pins and a hair tie. Wrap all three around the hair tie together, and you’ve got a chic messy bun. When you’re done, blast your locks with a finishing spray to maintain hold and add thickness. If you have space, pack a volumising curling brush to lift hair from root to tip and give twice the volume without tangling.

ORIBE, dry finishing spray, $42

SISLEY PARIS, Precious Hair Care oil, $105 SILVER BULLET Limitless Volumising Hot Brush, $169

face Value This season is bringing a glimmer of hope for us all, and as we adjust to a new way of life and a more simple existence, our skin and self-care practices are also changing. While we cannot control everything that is happening in our lives, we can certainly look after our skin and give ourselves the best skin yet! We asked Dr. Kate Jameson, founder and medical director of Youth Lab, Australia’s leading medical aesthetics clinic specialising in non-surgical aesthetics and skin rejuvenation, to give us an inside to the best new professional treatments and the best at-home options.

“This year, we are seeing the resurgence of more simplified salon and clinic treatments working to complement home care with less downtime and trauma on the skin. A focus on repairing barrier function, reducing congestion and “maskne” as well as giving the skin a makeup-free glow,” says Dr Kate. “Having a routine of self-care and looking after ourselves should be a priority, and while many have gone months without their regular in-clinic treatments such as lasers and injectables, new “at home” rituals and treatments are becoming more important.”

RETREATMAG.COM | 37

Hydrated and Dewy Skin Aquagold is a customised in-clinic treatment that can truly deliver airbrushed skin. Perfect for a pre-event pick-me-up or to ensure your skin is flawless regularly this medical-grade facial works to deliver custom made mesotherapy solutions, anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and active cosmeceutical ingredients directly into the skin using a gold plated stamping device. This works to improve the quality of the skin, encourage cellular regeneration and provide an immediate tightening and luminous effect. Mesotherapy cocktail solutions are tailored to each individual and their skin concerns. In each medical-grade Aqua Gold Fine Touch Facial the use of anti-wrinkle injections, which when injected in small amounts into the skin will result in tightening, reduced pore size and a more refined appearance. The use of hydrating dermal fillers means an immediate boost of hyaluronic acid into the skin, with the skin appearing more hydrated within days. The treatment is also safe to perform in very sensitive areas such as close to the eyes. The Aquagold is a no-downtime treatment that delivers immediate results and is suitable for the majority of skin types. YOUR AT- H OM E OPT IO N? If you can’t get into the clinic for an Aquagold facial there are options worth trying at home that can also work to deliver active ingredients into the skin to deliver a lasting glow and immediate hydration to ensure your skin remains tight, dewy and nourished while spending more time indoors. An at-home mesotherapy facial is a modified version of the Aquagold facial, using an at-home skin roller to ensure a safe, easy and effective home skin treatment. Mesotherapy amplifies skin’s health, quality and luminosity and is an exceptional treatment for those concerned with optimal ageing and maintaining a youthful appearance. Results are achieved through the infusion of an exclusive range of Mesoestetic Mesotherapy ampoules, filled with a luxurious blend of active cosmeceutical ingredients. A firm favourite for at-home mesotherapy is to infuse Mesoesthetic Anti-ageing Flash Ampoules into the skin using a home roller and then massage the remaining solution into the skin of the face, neck and décolletage. Anti-ageing flash ampoules have an

immediate firming effect. They effectively remove the signs of fatigue, provide immediate hydration and brightness, as well as smooth fine lines and expression lines.

Smooth and Soft Skin Chemical peels have always been popular in aesthetics; however, there are some more potent and effective “non-chemical” options that can work to deeply exfoliate the skin, remove imperfections, clear congestion and gently resurface the skin all without having to use any chemicals or acids, which may result in downtime or an impaired skin barrier. A potent ‘herbal’ non-acid peel, the Deep Sea Peel by Cosmedix is becoming popular worldwide. It is plant- and herbbased—so perfect for vegans and those concerned about the use of acids in chemical peels. This incredible marinebased coral peel uses manual exfoliation to resurface the skin. It stimulates significant cell turnover and deposits rich vitamins and minerals into the skin. This peel results in smoother, denser, more hydrated skin. As well as working to lift away stubborn pigmentation, it will soften the look of acne scarring and smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Other non-acid peels, which are becoming more popular, use fruit enzymes to gently exfoliate and smooth the surface of the skin. Enzyme peels are perfect for more sensitive skin and problematic skin that may be congested and sensitised from regular maskwearing. A popular enzyme peel is the PCA Enzymatic Treatment, which includes carica papaya fruit, tartaric acid, resveratrol ferment extract and vitis vinifera fruit cell extract. Combined, these ingredients aim to improve skin texture, brighten and tighten skin, and protect epidermal stem cells from damage. Peels like this have no downtime, are perfect for all skin types and seasons and can be combined to enhance the results of other in-clinic treatments.

Use this as a time to pamper yourself. Using your favourite cleanser, perform a double cleanse with a warm towel to remove excess cleanser and to help open the pores. The use of a toner is helpful to further prepare the skin for the enzyme peel, but this step can be skipped if the skin is already dry and sensitive. The next step is the enzyme peel, a firm favourite is the Apsect Doctor Fruit Enzyme Mask. This exfoliating mask, utilising Pineapple, Grapefruit, Pomegranate, Acai Berry and Cranberry, is packed with enzymes to refine and visibly brighten the complexion. The coffee extract also helps to achieve a radiant complexion by re-energising and visibly brightening the skin, while the powerhouse vitamin complex of Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate), Vitamin B5, Vitamin C and Vitamin E also helps to illuminate appearance. Massage the mask into the skin until it liquefies; you will then feel the exfoliation as old and damaged skin is gently removed to reveal subtle and soft skin underneath. The facial can be completed by the application of active serums such as vitamin C and vitamin A, which will penetrate the skin deeper due to the exfoliation from the enzymes. End the facial with a hydrating moisturiser or leave-on hydrating sheet mask for optimal indulgence.

Having a routine of self-care and looking after ourselves should be a priority Aspect, Fruit Enzyme Mask, $62

YO U R AT-HOM E OPTION ? What is so amazing about enzyme and non-acid peels is that numerous takehome options are safe for regular use and can provide an in-clinic experience in the home. An at-home enzyme facial can assist in maintaining healthy cellular turnover, exfoliation and a deep cleanse in between your regular in-clinic treatments.

Mesoestetic, Antiaging Flash Ampoule, $109

Firm and Tight Skin Sometimes we simply don’t have time to visit the clinic for long appointments and extensive laser and injectable treatments, so a short, simple and effective treatment that does not interfere with your day nor result in any downtime is bound to be popular. Enter the LED. LED treatments have been used for years to promote healing and recovery after intense treatments, but on their own can encourage collagen and elastin production and result in firmer, tighter and healthy skin, all while relaxing under a warm light for only 20 minutes. The Healite II LED is the world leader in LED phototherapy for skin rejuvenation safely and effectively. The Healite II utilises low-level light therapy to treat the skin superficially by delivering pure light to the skin, which in turn utilises your body’s own cellular recovery. LED therapy treats the skin without any physical trauma or heat damage and has no associated downtime or risks. The Healite II LED has also been scientifically proven to improve the

levels of collagen and elastin in the skin, resulting in visibly younger and healthy skin with smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles, improved tone and texture, improved elasticity and younger, more refined looking skin. You can also choose your wavelength, which in turn can target different concerns, or why not try a combination? Yellow light is especially good for wound healing, post-treatment recovery, scar treatment and skin rejuvenation; red light is the best for stimulating collagen and elastin for firmer skin, and blue light can be used to treat active acne. YO U R AT-HOM E OPTION ? With such advanced LED technology, there are now options for an LED treatment in the comfort of your own home. An at-home LED mask may be an investment, but they can offer an advanced skincare regime in as little as 10 minutes, which can be enjoyed with a glass of wine and a nice audiobook. At-home LED masks are perfect for travel (so get planning for your post-pandemic holiday) and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Incorporating an LED mask into an at-home facial is easy and these masks, although less powerful than their inclinic counterparts, can be used regularly for best results. The leader in home LED is the Déesse ProTM Express, which has one treatment mode, and focuses on the two clinically proven wavelengths of light 633nm (red) and 830nm (Near Infrared) to stimulate collagen and elastin production and improve circulation and tissue oxygenation. This mask stimulates the skin safely and is easily used. Simply cleanse and dry the skin, cover the eyes with damp cotton rounds and use the masks sitting upright or lying down. An at-home LED facial also has the benefits of providing relaxation, improving health and wellbeing, boosting serotonin levels, improving sleep quality, reducing headaches and relieving stress. If you have to be at home for extended periods or are finding yourself struggling to relax, then investing in an at-home LED mask may be your best decision for 2021—for you and your skin.

Vanity

Written by Aaron Royce Whether you are opting for sun and sea, mountains or city-chic destinations, you’re going to want to pack your makeup bag full of multi-tasking favourites. From mascara-as-eyeliner to liquid lipstick as cheek tint, we have rounded up the only products you need to reinvent your on-the-go makeup routine

Contour Stick A contour stick can instantly sharpen your facial structure when applied to the hollows of your cheeks. However, this creamy compound can also be blended on the edges of your forehead, jawline and above your eye creases to add even more dimension. WESTMAN ATELIER, Biscuit vcontour stick, $48

Face Balm A organic face balm is the perfect solution to dry or dehydrated skin. But it not only moisturizes your face—a balm can also be used to treat your cuticles too, keeping them soft and smooth.

Shimmer Powder

EARTH TU FACE, face balm, $49 (was $70)

Facial Oil Dual Stick Double-sided products are the ultimate beauty secret weapon! A stick like Wander’s contains blush and an illuminating highlight that pair perfectly together across any skin tone. WANDER BEAUTY, Coral Rose On-theGlow blush and illuminator, $42

Eyeliner Pencil Not only will an eyeliner pencil keep your eyes sleek and sharp but it doubles as the perfect tool to make faux freckles! Dot a warm shade on your cheeks for instant realistic freckles. NARS, Last Frontier eyeliner, $25

Face oil does not just have to be used for sun protection or anti-aging. It is also a great moisturizer for your décolletage and even your scalp, if you have leftovers after massaging it onto your skin. PAI SKINCARE, echium & amaranth face oil (30 ml), $89

Mascara Like many eye makeup products, mascara is not just for your lashes. Gently brush it around your eyes— especially if you are out of a liquid liner—as a foolproof eyeliner, as well. CHARLOTTE TILBURY, Pillow Talk mascara, $29 RETREATMAG.COM | 41

A lightweight shimmer powder is your new best friend, especially if you are in a pinch and need some extra sparkle. Lightly tap a small amount into the apples of your cheeks for a rosy highlight—and blend it on your eyelids for a glamorous evening look! GIVENCHY BEAUTY, Shimmery Pink No. 1 shimmer powder, $30 (was $42)

Cream Blush While blush is ideal for creating a flushed face, smooth cream blushes have an added function. Dab a small amount onto your eyelids for a punchy pink eyeshadow look! CLE DE PEAU BEAUTE, Pale Fig 2 cream blush, $60

Liquid Lipstick A smooth liquid lipstick can liven up your lips with color and shine. Not only that but it can also be used on the apples of your cheeks for a rosy tint! KJAER WEIS KW Red liquid lipstick, $30

Oversized styles have proved a massive hit in colder months due to their ability to be layered atop other comfy essentials like sweaters and sweatshirts. Try a full-shearling piece—or even a jacket with some faux-shearling trim—for peak coziness.

Joy D r es s For Written by Aaron Royce

Dark times always lead to brighter days ahead—and right now, there’s nothing more uplifting than fashion. Even though athleisure is the “new normal” that’s become part of our daily lives, there’s still magic in dressing up. That might not constitute a full look (read: slim-fitting pants), but it certainly means adding elements that spark joy is an instant mood-booster. The most colourful, textured, and detailed accents are the pieces we’re coveting that can instantly dress up even the most casual of outfits—or at least, add an air of eclectic glamour to them. Whether they’re your most sparkly statement earrings, bold bags or sky-high heels, there’s never been a better moment to simply wear whatever you’d like—especially if it makes you smile! Here, we break down four key athleisure pieces with fashionable twists that you can wear ASAP and the accessories that will spark joy forever. ULLA JOHNSON

The hoodie

The sweatshirt Oversized crewnecks have provided more comfort this season than ever before. Pair a relaxed-fit style with contemporary pearls, bold shorts and easy-to-wear mules for major WFH glam! A mini bag and lip gloss will also dress up the most casual outfits for a quick grocery run or late-night dinner pickup.

Hoodies have gotten a groovy makeover this season with a range of tie-dye palettes. Dress yours up with a patterned midi skirt for a double-printed look, but keep it casual with some embellished slides. Jewellery with precious stones, crystals or enamel will give you instant bohemian vibes, too. Don’t forget a deep lip stain to top it all off!

The t-shirt

The sweatpants

We’ve always loved a good T-shirt to dress down more formal pieces, but now the tables have turned. An oversized T-shirt is everyone’s go-to at the moment. To avoid the piece looking sloppy, spice yours up with patterned trousers. Sexy sandals will add major flair to the look—and who doesn’t love a colourful open-toed shoe? Keep it grounded with punchy eyeliner, and don’t forget to turn up the sparkle with crystal jewellery

The ultimate hallmark of non-fashion types, sweatpants, is something we spend most of our days in now. For Zooms or online gatherings—or simply to boost your mood— add a dose of elegance with a ruffled or printed style. Amp up the drama with metallic pumps and a bold blue eye, plus whimsical statement earrings and a colourful bag to boot.

From New York to Paris, designers have dazzled us with the season’s newest trends. Whether your style is glam or casual, one theme is clear: when it comes to fashion, comfort rules— but so does a little drama and a lot of fun.

New York UTILITARIAN JUMPSUITS Kicking off New York’s spring collections were a slew of utilitarian jumpsuits. Merging the practical with the fashionable, these pieces are perfect for the girl on the go—slip one on, and you have an instant outfit! Take a cue from designers like Claudia Li or Kim Shui by snagging a style with pockets, a sharp collar or both. 3.1 PHILLIP LIM, twill cotton jumpsuit, $695

VIBRANT GREENS One of 2021’s most predicted popular colours is green, and the first Fashion Week of the season kicked off with an explosion of it. Standouts like Bibhu Mohapatra, Frederick Anderson, and Jason Wu all incorporated the shade into their spring collections, proving that it’s pretty easy being green—especially in a slick silk suit, floaty dress or airy short-sleeved top. TORY BURCH, tiered midi dress, $398

VOLUMINOUS SLEEVES Designers from Christian Cowan to Nicole Miller encouraged fashion fans to go for the bold this spring with one major trend: over-the-top, puffy sleeves. This accent was on everything from flowy dresses to leather blouses, and a definite cause for adding some drama to your springtime look. Whoever said bigger is better was onto something. ORSEUND IRIS, button-embellished blouse, $445

LOUNGEWEAR SETS In the city that never sleeps, fashion is a constant. Reflective of the current WFH culture and the importance of staying home, the US fashion capital debuted a range of comfy loungewear sets. Everyone from Cynthia Rowley to Hillary Taymour at Collina Strada showed sets of matching sweatpants and tops or hoodies, proving that comfort is key for the months ahead. PARADISED, cotton jersey sweatshirt, $165

London VINTAGE FLORALS Florals, for spring? In 2021, it sounds groundbreaking— especially given the dressier side of London Fashion Week, serving as the polar opposite to everyone’s current uniform of sweatpants and cozy tops. Designers across the pond like Emilia Wickstead and Erdem Moralioglu utilized this trend yet again for the spring season in every garment imaginable, proving that formal florals still have their place in the fashion scene. ERDEM, printed midi dress, $1,630

RAD RUFFLES Following the formal style of the UK, ruffles sprouted everywhere during Fashion Week. Whether they were on skirts at Bora Aksu or dresses by Edeline Lee and Molly Goddard, the confectionary trend maintained its place as a fixture for fantastical fashion. Why not slip on a frothy skirt or gown when you’re feeling down? NEEDLE & THREAD, tulle midi skirt, $440

PATCHWORK PRINTS Colour-blocked and patchwork prints ran rampant across collections this season. Thornton Bregazzi’s Preen, Rixo and Christopher Kane all used this play on patterns and textures in their collections, creating pieces that simultaneously made statements and clashed in perfect harmony. MCQ, oversized checked shirt dress, $495

HIGH-NECK BLOUSES Blouses are essential for any woman’s wardrobe, which London designers latched onto for spring. Button-ups and tops with higher necklines accented by collars and bows were particularly popular, as proven by Roksanda, Simone Rocha and Victoria Beckham. Whether it’s the ultimate purchase for Zoom meetings or an easy transitional piece for regular wear, investing in one this spring will serve you well for seasons to come. 3.1 PHILLIP LIM, twill cotton jumpsuit, $695 RETREATMAG.COM | 89

Milan GRAPHIC PRINTS Milanese fashion is known for its bold and punchy prints, and this season was no exception. From Etro’s geometric flags to Marni’s splattered swirls and vibrant underwater patterns at Versace, there was a range of spectacular prints for anyone to choose from. VERSACE, printed kaftan, $825

SHEER APPEAL Gauzy, romantic pieces were literally in full swing at Milan Fashion Week this spring. Armani showed see-through gowns, while Sportmax and Emilio Pucci layered sheer slips on top of tights and shifts. Whether printed or embroidered, it was literally clear to see that transparency is trending right now. ETRO, printed blouse, $1,390

EARTHY NEUTRALS Neutrals took centre stage in Milan this season. There were brown gowns at Valentino and desertworthy hues of tan and beige at Tod’s and Max Mara, not to mention the numerous other brands where they made an appearance. All-natural neutrals are the direction fashion’s heading in this season—just be sure to pair yours with pointed flats or strappy sandals for a runway-worthy finish. RAINS, wide-leg pants, $125

CROCHET Perhaps one of the season’s more unusual trends, crochet came out of the woodwork for the spring 2021 shows. There were open-knit sweaters at Alberta Ferretti, chic crocheted dresses at Ferragamo and cozy sets at Fendi. This vintage-inspired trend undoubtedly came back to merge comfort with fashion, in case any especially dramatic dressers wanted to wear something soft without settling for sweats. Count us in! BRUNELLO CUCINELLI, ribbed-knit sweater, $1,995 RETREATMAG.COM | 91

Paris OVERSIZED SUITING Following the wave of trends merging formalwear with comfort this season, Paris’ take on the movement was over-sized blazers and suiting. Louis Vuitton’s voluminous slacks, as well as Thom Browne and The Row’s massive jackets, were a clear cue to go a size up when buying suiting pieces this season. SAINT LAURENT, wool and cashmere-blend blazer, $3,790

ELEGANT YELLOW Like clockwork, pastels bloomed on the runways just in time for spring. In Paris, light yellows were everywhere from Givenchy to Altuzarra. Though the tone is always appropriate this time of year, the best way to wear it is through a shirtdress or any dress style, according to leading brands this season. MARA HOFFMAN, cotton- and linen-blend dress, $275

GOLD HARDWARE Gold was a mainstay for numerous brands this Fashion Week. Balmain embellished its bags with the metal, Schiaparelli showcased chunky surrealist jewellery and Chloé adorned its bags and accessories with the staple hardware—and let’s not forget Paco Rabanne’s multiple gold sequined looks, including that viral full-face mask. CHLOÉ gold and crystal necklace, $870

STRAIGHT-LACED Lace is a hallmark of French fashion, as one of the most romantic and delicate materials around. Naturally, it made its mark through heart-stopping dresses at Dior, statement blouses at Rokh and sweet cardigan sets at Chanel. ISABEL MARANT, lace-trimmed blouse, $920 RETREATMAG.COM | 93

o person brings jet-setting to mind as much as Nicky Hilton. From New York to Los Angeles and beyond, Hilton is an avid traveller and renowned it-girl, well, everywhere. It stands to reason that the COVID-19 pandemic brought a halt to the designer and businesswoman’s agenda of meetings, parties, fashion shows and family vacations. In retrospect, Hilton says that last year’s worldwide shutdown taught her to “stop and smell the roses.” “It was a crazy, crazy year, but one of the words I take away most is ‘gratitude,’” says Hilton. “I think so many of us were taking such simple things for granted. Just going out to lunch with a friend, or even meeting in person for a meeting. Going to the grocery store. And then, suddenly, all of us were put on house arrest. So I would definitely say that it has made me grateful for the small things.” Hilton’s been in the public eye since she was a teenager, photographed at the Waldorf with her sister, Paris, and getting great acclaim after launching her first clothing line when she was just 21 years old. After all, instant fame is natural when you’re a renowned heiress. However, Hilton reveals that her family’s close-knit nature keeps her grounded. “I always say that my happiness and success is connected to my family. I’m so close with my family. Not only my mom, my dad, my siblings, but my cousins, my aunts and uncles,” Hilton says. “We’re all so tight, and to have that bond and know that you always have each other’s back is very important to me. Family is everything.”

Hilton’s status as a public figure involves a great deal of…well, being in the public. From appearing at events to walking the runways at New York Fashion Week, Hilton has fully embraced her itgirl status. Though her position in the spotlight draws a range of opinions from the public, she’s learned to tune them out—and focus on her family instead.

daughters with Rothschild, Lily-Grace and Teddy Marilyn, are both under six years old—and being a working parent in today’s world is no small feat! Since becoming a mother, Hilton says that she’s learned a range of virtues from her kids— particularly to lead by example, especially when teaching them about values like kindness, manners and empathy.

“I stopped caring about that stuff a long, long time ago. I’ve been in this industry since I was a teenager, so I’ve seen it all,” says Hilton. “You can’t let the opinion of strangers affect you. It’s not a healthy way to live. I focus on my friends and family and what they think of me.”

“I think, more than anything, they’ve taught me patience,” Hilton laughs. “And trying to be the best version of myself, because children mirror you and what they see.”

Hilton is celebrating a variety of major occasions this year, including the second anniversary of her French Sole line. (More on that later!) The greatest, of course, is her 6-year anniversary to businessman James Rothschild. The two wed at the Orangery at Kensington Palace Gardens in London, England in July 2015; Hilton wore a Valentino Haute Couture gown for the occasion. After six years of marriage, Hilton reflects that what makes a marriage work is closeness and friendliness. “I think what makes a relationship work is being best friends, and having that mutual respect and having fun and enjoying each other,” says Hilton. “I feel very lucky. I have an incredible husband who is such a good father, husband and friend. I’m very grateful.” In addition to her role as a mother and wife, Hilton balances a range of titles: businesswoman, designer, socialite. As such, she’s constantly on the go—whether creating a new fashion line or dropping her kids off at school. When it comes to finding balance, Hilton discloses that there’s no secret formula, and says it’s a “never-ending battle.” Despite the busy nature (and schedule) of juggling numerous projects and titles, Hilton has her own methods to make time for self-care. “I do try and keep my business stuff to the weekdays—or ‘school days,’ as I call them. And I try to unplug on the weekends a bit, and put my phone away and just focus on family,” she says. “I have a home in Long Island, which I go to most weekends, so having that escape from the concrete jungle is also very nice. As much as I love New York, it’s good to have a little break now and then.” Among her many roles, one of Hilton’s greatest is “mom.” Her two young

Hilton’s notably been a longtime member of the fashion industry. Throughout her life, she’s been a designer, model and muse—in addition to regularly commanding the front rows of top designers during Fashion Month. As a fashion mogul, Hilton’s also known for her wardrobe. Her streamlined style often features classic top-and-trouser combos and glamorous dresses, paired with coordinating flats and pumps. When it comes to creating similarly sharp outfits, Hilton believes that building a wardrobe on staple pieces is key. “I always say to invest in the timeless pieces. The ones that are never going to go out of style, like a beautiful black blazer, or a great trench coat, or a black dress,” says Hilton, who’s fairly averse to momentary trends. “Those ones that will be in your wardrobe for years and years to come. Don’t invest so much time or money on the trend pieces, because those are a flash in the pan.” Hilton’s equally style-savvy younger sister, Paris, is a fashion icon in her own right. Though their strongly different styles usually prevent too much swapping (or “borrowing,” as anyone with a sister knows), Hilton does have favourites from her sister’s closet—and has even worn one of her most iconic outfits of all time. “I was at her house recently, and I needed something comfy. I was just doing some work on her sofa, so I put on one of her Juicy Couture tracksuits,” Hilton recalls. She also adds that Paris has an “amazing arsenal of accessories,” noting her sunglasses collection as a favourite part of her closet. Being a businesswoman is a challenging role that commands a lot of time and energy. Especially as the world has changed in the last several years, what it means to be a RETREATMAG.COM | 105

“boss” has also changed. To Hilton, leading by example is essential as a boss—especially when it comes to the planet. “I think a boss is always associated with being a powerful person. I think today, more than ever, it’s very boss-like to look after the environment and to lead a more sustainable life in your personal and professional life—whether that’s changing the way you shop, eat, travel,” she says. “We all have to do our part to leave this world a better place for our children and our children’s children.” Living a sustainable lifestyle seems like a big adjustment, but Hilton says there are numerous ways to add eco-friendly practices to your daily routine. Some of her favourites include bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, turning lights off after leaving a room and composting. She’s also made her design career environmentally friendly in recent years, launching her first sustainable French Sole collection in 2019. Since then, Hilton’s continued to create classic shoes that reflect her own sharp on-the-go style.

We all have to do our part to leave this world a better place for our children and our children’s children. “I like to stick to just the beautiful classics that I wear every day. Just the round-toed ballet flats, loafers, smoking slippers,” Hilton says. “What I love about flats is they’re the perfect combination of comfort and elegance. I think it’s such a chicer alternative than a sneaker. For me, living in New York, I’m running around all day, pick up the kids, drop-off, meetings— so, it’s the perfect shoe for me.”

Travel is also an important part of Hilton’s life, both for work and pleasure. Most recently, the heiress took a summer trip to Rome, Italy. While on vacation, Hilton made sure to take in the city’s classic sights—as well as some pasta from her favourite restaurants, Bolognese and Al Moro, and a shopping trip to Prada. “It felt very good,” Hilton says of her trip. “I went to Italy about a week after they lifted the restrictions, so it was such a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be in Rome, on the Spanish Steps and at the Trevi Fountain, without all the packed tourists. So, it was really nice to enjoy the city without it being so packed.” As she prepares for future trips to Los Angeles, Greece and a second vacay in Italy, Hilton recalls her favourite travel memories. Many have been with her sister, with who she’s been on numerous international trips with over the years. “We love to travel together. I would say one of our favourites is Las Vegas; we just were in Vegas for the Resorts World Opening that she deejayed. Vegas is always a fun time,” Hilton laughs. “But if we’re looking for something more relaxing, Hawaii. Maui. We’ve been going there every year since we’re babies, and it’s just such a nice, relaxing, beautiful place to visit.” On the local front, Hilton adores her hometown of New York City. When it comes to dressing between cities like NYC, London, and Los Angeles, the designer’s style is adaptable to the climate she’s in. “I think I am a bit of a style chameleon. I definitely think I adapt to my environment, you know?” says Hilton. “When I’m in L.A., I’m definitely embracing that laid-back, boho-chic vibe: loose, blousy dresses, gladiator sandals. When I’m in New York, it’s a little more dressed up and sophisticated.” Speaking of New York City, Hilton’s stomping grounds were the background of her cover shoot—after all, she is a “born and bred New Yorker.” The heiress was photographed across a range of spots that highlighted the city’s rich culture, like 50 Bowery and Chinatown. When it comes to New York, she loves the city’s diversity and energy the most. “I think it’s one of the most fantastic, dynamic places,” says Hilton. “It really is the melting pot of the world, and it has a little of something for everyone. I love the energy, the people. I love it.” As the future nears, Hilton teases that more projects are on the horizon—including her upcoming fall collection for French Sole. “You’ll definitely see more shoes, and I’m working on a few fun projects, which I will launch at the beginning of next year,” she says.

There’s more to Carmella Rose than meets the eye. Best recognized for her magazine covers, you may be surprised to learn the budding young activist has much more going on *behind* the camera than in front of it. Rose has made it her life mission to use her platform for good. A Unicef NextGen Ambassador for over three years now, Rose has headed a multitude of social campaigns. Her work with the organization has proven to be so enriching that she has dedicated her career to making the world a better place through social work, however possible. We sat down with the model, activist and jet-setter for an inside to her hometown, Los Angeles. Known for modelling on fashion magazine covers, the influencer has a range of interests that the cameras don’t capture. With a platform of almost 3-million followers, Rose understands that with great influence comes great responsibility. That’s why she’s incorporated activism into her day-to-day life, particularly as a Unicef NextGen Ambassador for three years (and counting). The 25-year-old has spearheaded a range of social campaigns to bring awareness to causes like emergency relief, education and equal rights that affect children worldwide. Rose’s work with the organization has enriched her so much that she’s dedicated her career to making the world a better place through social work.

I used to think my main goal would be to become some huge model and live happily ever after, but as the years go on of me being in this industry, I realized my biggest goal is to inspire others. says Rose. “Whether it’s empowering women, working towards a better environment or just being a better human, it is just something I want to always strive to accomplish for the rest of my life.”

Rose is usually based out of her hometown of Los Angeles, which she admires the most for its variety of cultures. “People live and visit from all over the world, each looking for opportunities of their own to fulfil their dreams,” says Rose. “I love connecting with others and sharing our stories. I think there’s something really beautiful about that.” The influencer, naturally, has her go-to hotspots in the city. As an admirer of architecture, Rose’s favourite hotel is the Kelly Wearstler-designed Santa Monica Proper Hotel. She loves dining at Elephante and Crossroads. When it comes to beauty, Rose especially favours the deep tissue massage with hemp balm at Now Massage, which “leaves you feeling like you’re in the clouds.” Fashion-wise, the jet-setter’s style is breezy and feminine. Rose shops often at Aritzia, Farfetch and The RealReal for her ‘90s chic style. Her rotation usually features pieces like one-shouldered tops, slip dresses and loose blazers from labels like Are You Ami, Alo, and House of CB—plus edgy corset tops and leather trousers. However, when it comes to dressing for travel, the model prefers to keep things casual. “I love to be cozy— usually sweatpants, a tank top and a hoodie with sneakers,” she says. As a frequent jet-setter, Rose has honed her must-haves when far from home. The model always packs her headphones, chapstick, makeup and skincare, and advises others to roll their clothes when packing—according to her, it adds space in your luggage and reduces wrinkled clothes. When travelling, she prefers to stay fit using exercise bands and workout routines from her good friend Sami Clarke’s YouTube channel.

“If I have access to a gym or somewhere to run, I make sure to get some 20-minute cardio in as well!” she adds. Skincare is also essential when travelling, which Rose does not take lightly. “Hydrate! It’s so important,” she says. “Drink lots of water, and make sure you’re wearing lots of moisturizer and SPF!” Onboard a long flight, Rose prefers clean skin. “I love to make sure my skin is thoroughly washed and moisturized right before I fly,” the model shares. “If it’s a long flight, I like to freshen up and redo my skincare routine again before landing at my destination.” That destination often varies, as Rose has numerous favourites— including Tanzania, Greece, Egypt and Portofino. “I’m in love with everywhere I go,” she says, adding that Japan is on her bucket list to visit in the future. However, for the time being, Rose is enjoying her time in Los Angeles—though that could change in an instant. “I just got back from the south of France and at this moment have no travel plans!” she exclaims. “But that can change very fast. Always ready for another adventure.”

Floating

FEASTS In the old days, breakfast in bed was the hallmark of any holiday. They were resplendent affairs, with silver serving domes and white table linens on wheeled carts, and lots of privacy. Today, indulgent floating meals will have you reaching for your (hopefully waterproof) smartphone. As travel makes a beeline back to normalcy, questions abound, not the least of which is what do we do with the buffet? But there should be no hesitation for the breakfast that floats.

PH OTOGRAPH E D BY H E ATHER FO R D

1

3

1. TANAH GAJAH, A RESORT BY HADIPRANA Key to the success of any floating breakfast is the backdrop. Let’s face it, an egg’s an egg no matter where it’s served. But an egg that floats at sunrise on a tray made of coconut wood, in a pool filtered by elephants and moored out among the lush rice paddies of Ubud, well that’s an egg for the ages. At Tanah Gajah Ubud, visitors can breakfast in the estate’s main pool or in their private pool (when booked into a private pool villa). We suggest a dip following a sunrise hot air balloon ride where you can drink in views of Mt. Agung.

2. BANYAN TREE SAMUI

2

Circle your selections—pancakes, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, bacon, sausages, Earl Grey tea, coffee, croissants, perhaps a platter of cheeses, cold cuts and olives or even Champagne and orange juice—and lo and behold, it arrives on a trolley the next morning at the requested time. All that remains is for the waiter to delicately place your breakfast on a giant floating basket and glide it across to you as you wallow on a lilo. What a great way to start the day! And because breakfast is included in the daily rate, the price for such lavishness is just an additional service fee of $15 per villa. Just remember—the camera always eats first!

3. MELIÁ KOH SAMUI About the only way to beat waking up to a lagoon pool that meanders through Meliá Koh Samui’s grounds like a river is to add a floating breakfast to its surface. A must-try for anyone staying in rooms and suites with private terraces that segue to the lagoon pool, the floating breakfast makes for a mix-and-match affair. Guests select whatever they wish from the resort’s a la carte menu that includes eggs benedict, pastries, delectable Spanish cold cuts and cheese, and fresh fruit as well as coffee, tea and freshly squeezed juices. If you’re feeling up to it, opt for a glass or two of bubbles.

4. BANYAN TREE LANG CO In a nation as replete with visual manna as Vietnam, it takes something truly jaw-dropping to stand out from the crowd. Luckily, that’s what’s on offer at Banyan Tree Lang Co where one of the nation’s most striking vistas provides the ultimate floating breakfast pick-me-up. While the views over the East Sea and the resort’s private beach—a pristine 3-km long stretch of sand— certainly grab the attention, the repast itself is equally memorable. Breakfast—either continental, healthy or American—comes served on a fetching sedge tray. Guests can also upgrade with a 375-ml bottle of Champagne. Now that’s what we call a beautiful start to the day!

5. ALMA CAM RANH If you’re not quite content with a floating tray experience at your pavilion’s private pool, Alma’s 12 swimming pools are also on offer for the picture-perfect feast. Guests populate their tray, available for breakfast and meals throughout the day, by choosing from a broad spectrum of Vietnamese and international dishes on offer at Alma’s host of dining outlets. Whether savouring bacon and eggs or a banh mi and banh xeo for breakfast or fresh seafood or a pizza later in the day, from the right photo angle the meal will look like it’s about to float away to the next pool or nearby sand and sea. Did we mention Alma offers heart-shaped trays in addition to rectangle ones?

HILTON MOLINO STUCKY VENICE VEN ICE The recently renovated Skyline Rooftop Bar at Hilton Molino Stucky Venice is the highest bar in Venice with incredible panoramic views of the city and talented mixologists. Guests and locals alike will be mesmerized by incredible views of the Venice Skyline, from Canale Giudecca to Piazza San Marco, while sitting in this stylish 8th floor Venetian bar. A signature cocktail for summer is the Red Hot Chilli Pepper, created by Gabriele Cusimano, the Skyline Bar Manager.

GREAT PLAINS OL DONYO LODGE KEN YA Guests at ol Donyo Lodge always ask what cocktail is recommended, and a camp favourite is without a doubt The Donyo Dawa. The locally sourced honey compliments the freshly squeezed lime—creating a bittersweet marriage over the vodka. The Dawa is a well-known refreshing beverage in Kenya from the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro to the depths of the Maasai Mara and interestingly means ‘medicine’ in Swahili. As the sun sets behind the looming Kilimanjaro with a breeding herd of elephants ambling past slowly, this refreshing and zesty drink is the perfect sundowner.

The Donyo Dawa IN G RED IEN TS · 1 lime (large) · 6 or 8 ice cubes (crushed) · 2 tots of vodka · 1 tablespoon of honey to taste (add more if you like it on the sweeter side) · A handful of mint IN STRU CTION S 1: Cut half the lime into quarters and squeeze the other half of lime into the glass. 2: Add the honey 3: Use the wooden stick (or spoon if you don’t have a Dawa stick) and crush the mint and chopped lime and mix in with the honey. This stick is often known as the magic stick as it dissolves and crushes the flavours together. 4: Crush the ice cubes and place into the glass 5: Add the vodka 6: Mix all ingredients in the glass together well with the stick. Top it up with soda water if you wish or add more lime or honey to taste.

GREAT PLAINS SELINDA CAMP B OTSWA N A For those looking for a non-alcoholic option, Great Plains Selinda Camp Manager and mixology enthusiast Michael Jones has shared his signature mocktail: The Tea & Tonic (T&T). The T&T takes the flavour of tea, a little bit of lemon, a little bit of lemon juice and a great tonic, combines them into a refreshing drink that wouldn’t be missed at an African Sundowner, afternoon tea, lunch or even first thing before a morning game drive! This mocktail made with rooibos can be adapted to any tea and any good tonic. As this is a sugar syrup the lemon juice and tonic water helps to break some of the sweetness, so add as much lemon juice as you like.

The Tea & Tonic Mocktail ING R ED IENT S 1 Cup Brown Sugar 1 Cup Water 4 Rooibos Tea Bags 15ml Fresh Lemon (or to taste) 1x 275ml Barker & Quin Indian Tonic EQ U IPM ENT Saucepan Tumbler/ shallow jam jar INST R U CT IO NS 1: Combine brown sugar and water to a saucepan, boil and ensure the sugar has dissolved. Add the tea bags and slightly reduce. 2: Remove from the heat and allow to sit for an hour or two; the longer it’s left the more concentrated the flavour. This makes about half a cup of syrup. 3: Take 45ml of your rooibos syrup and add to a tumbler (or, as in the photo, use a shallow jam jar). Add the lemon juice, top off with ice and pour the tonic over the ice. 4: Garnish with a slice of lemon peel and stir to combine.

Tea Pairing

While we all know about wine pairing, tea is incredibly versatile and can be paired with a vast variety of foods, from classic meat dishes to sweet chocolate desserts. We asked Boh tea for ideas on how to pair different teas for the ultimate sensory experience.

RETREATMAG.COM | 194

Black Tea

White Tea

With the most robust flavour and pronounced tannins, black tea is best paired with full-flavoured foods like spicy dishes and meat. Pastries also taste amazing when served with black tea. But, there are several types of black tea:

White tea has a silky, subtle flavour, so pairing it with strong foods may cause you to miss its natural sweetness. This lovely, delicate tea is best paired with lightly flavoured foods like a fresh vegetable salad.

Fruity black tea works well with sweet desserts because its high concentration of tannins cleanses the residual mouth-feel and enhances the sweetness of the dish. Smoky black teas are very strong and should be combined with intensely flavoured foods, like dark meats, blackened meat or even dark chocolate. Earthy black teas compliment blackened meat, jerk chicken, mashed potatoes and other vegetable gravy recipes.

Green Tea Green tea is well known for its subtle vegetative flavour so it’s best to pair it with mildly flavoured foods like seafood, fish or chicken. If you love fruits, melons are an ideal choice to pair with green tea as well. Rice tastes better when served with a cup of green tea alongside, and salads are a good fit too. Green tea has three main flavour profiles: vegetal, smoky and fruity. Each of these accentuates the taste of certain foods more enjoyably. Vegetal green teas are representative of Japanese green tea in general. It has a fresh, grassy flavour and is perfect for enhancing seafood. Smoky green tea on the other hand is stronger so it pairs well with panfried turkey or chicken as it cuts the greasy feel of fried meat. Also, it can accentuate the taste and flavour of potatoes, light stir-fries and even pizza made with root veggies. Finally, fruity green teas taste delicious when served with chicken, sandwiches and fruit salads. Also, a great choice for a refreshing glass of iced tea. Representative of Ceylon and Indian green teas, these beverages have a lovely, light sweetness, which makes them perfect for baked meat-based dishes and whole wheat bread. These aren’t the best option for deep-fried or greasy meat recipes.

If you try pairing white tea with sweet fruit dishes or even meat, there is a chance you will feel like you’re drinking plain water. Therefore, the best option would be a light dish like a cucumber salad or a lightly seasoned seafood or fish recipe. Drinking it alone between meals is also an excellent choice. Accentuate the delightfully subtle notes of white tea with some delicately flavoured wildflower honey.

Oolong Tea Oolong tea has a more multifaceted aroma that ranges between green and black teas. Therefore, it can be paired with a more vast range of foods, from light fish dishes to grilled meats. Typically, oolongs are divided into two main categories, which are light and dark teas. So, when pairing this versatile beverage with dishes, it’s wise to keep the following in mind: Light oolong tea is incredible with scallops, lobster and sweet rich seafood. So fragrant and aromatic, light oolong teas should be combined with dishes that can bring their floral notes. Try pairing this tea with crackers or lightly salted snacks. The combination of sweet and salty flavours can lead to an interesting culinary experience. Dark oolongs are known to have a more pronounced, intense flavour, so they pair better with strongly seasoned foods. Grilled duck meat, salmon, trout and bass dishes are a wonderful choice. Smoked meat and meat-based appetizers can also bring out the flavour of dark oolongs. As for desserts: pastries and pancakes made with maple syrup usually pair well with this type of tea.

MIKOH

www.shop.mikoh.com Mikoh is the collaboration of the sister duo Oleema and Kalani Miller. Born and bred in the small beach town of San Clemente in Orange County, California, Oleema and Kalani grew up with the ocean in their backyard. The Mikoh line is their statement on swimwear for the modern woman, inspired by a life spent in bikinis and oceans around the world. Mikoh is synonymous with feminity, beauty and strength. The line fuses statement prints and colours from around the world with luxurious fabrics and modern fits. Each bikini is designed to easily mix and match for one-of-a-kind styles. The collection has grown to include swimwear, ready-to-wear beach cover-ups, clothing for the traveller and the dreamer, and mikoh x surf, a line of surf-ready pieces in smartly cut neoprene. Mikoh is a vision of swimwear for the certain woman who knows who she is—if not where she’s going next. Oleema and Kalani were raised in a family of surfers, designers and lovers of the sea. Both were encouraged to explore creativity and self-expression —Oleema through her passion for all things fashion, Kalani with a paintbrush in hand. Creative expression was the spirit of the household and the water was a second home. As teens, the sisters surfed and modelled, travelled, lived swimsuit to swimsuit. Kalani’s path led to university while Oleema took to the road. Mikoh brought them together in creativity, inspired by the things they’d seen and learned on their journey—newfound friends, foreign beaches, distant cultures. The Mikoh brand was born of this lifestyle: swimwear for the confident modern woman, unique and wearable at home and abroad. Its name derives from the girls’ last name, Miller, as well as the first initial of Kalani and Oleema and their younger sister’s name, Hana. In Japanese, Miko is a term that once meant “female shaman” or “female prophecy.”

The professionally shot and edited photos are then delivered straight to users’ smartphones between 24 and 48 hours after the shoot via a private online gallery, so they can view, share, download and order prints of their images faster than they can say ‘parttime Instagram influencer’.

Nicky Hilton’s Holiday Rules What do you love most about New York? The energy!

Your packing advise? Always leave room for shopping.

Favourite hotel? The Crosby Street Hotel.

How do you stay in shape in the city? Running around all day! That is my cardio.

Top spa and best Treatment? The Red-Carpet Facial at Tracie Martyn.

Skincare tips when travelling? I do not like to wear any makeup on the plane. I just lather myself in moisturizers and eye creams to really hydrate while I’m up there. And lots of water!

Favourite restaurants Rubirosa, for pizza. Mr. Chow’s, for Chinese. There is actually a great Australian diner I love, Ruby’s, which is in the neighborhood. Carbone is also amazing. Where do you love to shop? Bergdorf Goodman. What is your city style? Skinny jeans, ballet flats, button-down shirt and a leather jacket. Packing essentials for NYC? Definitely a pair of comfortable shoes— ballet flats, for me. A motorcycle leather jacket. A pair of Aquazzura heels, a pretty dress and a camera.

What is your airport style? Comfort. Nothing glamorous. Usually yoga pants, a hoodie, and a tennis shoe. Do you have any beauty tips for flying? Definitely hydrate. But I also always bring my own blanket on a plane and an eye mask. I like to rest when I’m on the plane. It’s very rare time when I’m unreachable so I like to catch up on some sleep. Where is next on your travel bucket list? I would love to go back to Tokyo. I used to go a few times for work, and it’s such a cool city. I feel like there is still so much more to see there.
