Golf Tip: Effective Practice From Jake Etherton, PGA, Head Golf Professional Have you arrived at the driving range wondering what to work on? With uncertainty, you grab a favorite club and hit ball after ball, realizing something is wrong. At this point one simply is counterproductive, hoping to find the swing you had when previously leaving the driving range. You probably hit shots with a selected club and only agree to move on once you feel you have that swing grooved. That’s how a lot of golfers practice, and it’s no different than musicians trying to master difficult music. Much like a golfer who toils away at a 7-iron until hitting it clean, a violinist repeats a certain passage until they have it down pat. That is “blocked practice schedule” and it’s the way many learned a variety of tasks. It’s also woefully ineffective. The problem with repetition is after a while our brains aren’t as receptive, because what we really respond to more is change. We might feel that 13th consecutive 7-iron felt pretty good, but we are still not learning it as effectively as we could. And unless you’re playing a version of golf that requires you to hit 13 consecutive 7-irons, it’s not applicable to a real golf situation.
Create a Game Plan
Whether it be the Dallas Cowboys or the Cleveland Indians, if we look at any professional sport team or player, they have one thing in common — a plan of what to practice, how to practice and what they plan on achieving. With that being stated, one needs to simulate
be it with a large glass window at home or at the course, a mirror or a shadow. Within a few minutes swing the club a hundred times back and forth. The goal here is symmetry. Try to make your back swing and follow through look the same. While you are swinging, be aware of how repetitive your motion is, the weight of the club, the speed of the swing and the rhythm that you make going back and forth.
Enjoying Practice on course situation. Find a routine that diversifies what shots you hit and randomizes your practices.
Putting Practice
The greatest number of strokes per round can usually be attributed to the flat stick. If you are a scramble player once a month or a high-level junior golfer, your greatest area of improvement is on the putting green. Practice this drill: take eight golf balls and arrange them approximately six feet from the hole in a north, south, east and west configuration.
There is nothing wrong with going to the driving range to simply enjoy hitting golf balls. In fact, it is probably best if you are getting frustrated with the game, take a deep breath, stop thinking and swing the club remember you are playing this game to have fun! However, if you want to reduce your handicap, go into every single practice with intent.
Chipping Practice
One of the greatest shots to practice is the chip shot. Go to the practice green and scatter eight balls around the green to provide eight unique chip shots to hit using different iron/ wedges. The goal is to chip each of these shots to within the length of that iron. The average high iron is three feet, which is a great goal. To add to your practice, take a putter and try and get each chip up-and-down.
Shadow or Mirror Work
In a high tech age we can easily grab our cell phone, video our swings, upload them to software and analyze moves. The problem is time. Efficiency is key. Get in front of your reflection,
