Golf Shots You Never Practice, But Should
There are several golf shots that people NEVER seem to practice, yet these are the exact shots that cost them strokes round after round. Practice doesn’t make perfect, in this case it makes you prepared. If you don’t practice each of the shots below, you have very little idea as to how the ball comes “out” or what your limitations are in general. If you want to play your best, you must experiment and practice these shots.
HILLY LIES We have four lies that occur on the golf course: The uphill lie, where the ball wants to go high and right; the downhill lie, where the ball wants to go low and left; the uphill sidehill lie, where the ball wants to go left; and finally the downhill sidehill lie, where the ball tends to go right. These lies play havoc on the average player and the ball tends to go everywhere but where we want it to go. The key lies in practice and experimentation. Do you actually know how much the hill influences your shot? Your club selection? Your trajectory? Your carry distance? Of course not. You must experiment until you have an idea as to what the ball does off each slope and grade. If not, you are stuck guessing. The best way is to hit balls off a hill that gently get steeper. Hit a few balls from the slight slope and work your way up the hill until you reach your limit. Experiment with different clubs on all types of slopes and find your limitations with each club.

Golf Shots You Never Practice, But Should, continued
BIG-BREAKING PUTTS Now I won’t lie to you — most players tend to hit longer putts with break on the putting green each time they go out, but few hit the putts like I am talking about — thus they fail every time. Think of a situation where you have a ridge or an elephant buried in the green you have to navigate. Do you have the feel and line in your mind? Can you putt the ball right to the precipice with the dying speed necessary for it to trickle down the slope gently to the hole? Of course not. What about the big-breaking putt that’s super-fast or super-slow? Are these putts you tend to three putt? These are the situations that cause the poor lag putts, in my opinion — not the long, flat putts that 99 percent of players practice when they go out. This is called fine-tuning your feel — putting putts on the highest line possible and the lowest line possible so you can find the perfect speed on the course.
THE 50 YARD BUNKER SHOT Ugh… one of the hardest shots in golf and one that is never worked on, and I even say it’s because most courses don’t have the facilities necessary to work on them. However, there is a way to work on these, and there is a shot you can use to make them easier. Have you tried a long explosion shot instead of trying to “pick” the ball perfectly? In fact, this option is quite easy if you have enough green to work with and don’t have to be perfect with your landing. Set up to the ball like you would with a normal bunker shot, but this time have an 8 or 9 iron in your hand. Yes, you have to aim a touch more leftward because this ball squirts right and spins right when it hits the ground. But other than that it’s a straightforward bunker shot.

Controlling Goosegrass Our team applied a herbicide last week with the intention of removing large patches of goosegrass throughout the three courses. This application included a chemical that has a bleaching effect on the turf. This is a temporary discoloration that typically lasts around two weeks. The turf will not be damaged during this period. However, the goosegrass and several other weeds will be greatly impacted. This is a good time of year to gain a control of weeds. The growing season has begun to slow down and the weeds are more receptive to herbicide applications. It's also just prior to our overseeding process starting late November. With overseed on the ground we are limited to the range of herbicides we can utilize that will not harm the new grass. We plan to spray additional applications up until the time the residual effects will impact our overseeding process.

From the Courts... I want to thank all Members for their great support, we are excited the season is in full swing! The participation in Tennis and Pickleball is really booming! The staff is excited about offering more opportunities for Members to improve their games and maintain their active lifestyles. We encourage all Members to try Pickleball. Throughout November we are extending a complimentary half hour Pickleball lesson to any Member who is interested in learning. It is easy to learn initially, but hard to master. It has a complex strategy that comes later, like chess. Pickleball’s recent growth in popularity is astonishing!
