A Work Of Art: Luxury Bathroom Design Many people overlook bathrooms but they are one of the key rooms in your home. Before beginning to design a bathroom it’s important to consider who the bathroom is for and how often it will be used. Will it be a frequent family space, an occasional bathroom for guests or as an everyday en-suite? Consider the space around you - if you have room, a separate shower and bath will give you the best of both worlds. MINIMALIST DESIGN Give careful consideration to colour schemes and your choice of tiles in order to achieve that luxury look. You can make this space appear larger, and therefore more luxurious, with large tiles in a calming neutral shade. A minimalist approach will add a sophisticated touch so it’s a good idea to factor in an alcove within the shower area, which will keep your lotions and potions neatly stacked away. Invest in a capacious vanity unit and a mirrored cabinet, don’t forget mistresistant mirrored glass for the perfect finishing touch, and you will have a place for everything. Mosaic tiles make a perfect backdrop in a shower area - glass versions are particularly beautiful and recreate the effect you would find in a luxury hotel. The shower design you choose will also have an impact, a large overhead shower will not

only look great aesthetically but also feel luxurious every time you use it. MOOD LIGHTING Lighting can often be an afterthought but for a designer this forms a crucial part of the planning process. A combination of task, mood and feature lighting will all contribute to a bathroom sanctuary. LED down-lights are perfect for use all over the bathroom, while low-level, mood lighting will create a softer approach. LED lights look fabulous on shelves in alcoves and along plinths and you can put these on a separate switch or remote sensor so in the evening you can enjoy low-level ambient light. The key is to have different options, so you can take your pick according to the look that you want to achieve. Now you have your luxurious bathroom scheme, keeping it clean will help maintain the luxury feel for years to come. Choose a wall-hung toilet with a fully removable seat to for easy cleaning, mirrors with demister pads and shower panels impregnated with limescale preventers. n

SELF-BUILD SUCCESS
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE LISA MELVIN AS YOUR DESIGNER?
We first met Lisa in October 2008, just as we’d secured the purchase of our perfect plot of land on which we were going to build a house we’d been talking about for many years. Our experience of houses in Germany played a large part in the house design and we initially thought that we might

Lisa came across as very PROJECT IN WARWICKSHIRE. personable and easy to talk to. We soon realized that Lisa was going to be a valuable part of our building adventure. WHAT SETS LISA MELVIN APART FROM OTHER DESIGNERS?
We found that Lisa showed a willingness to work with us and for us. She works hard at offering just the right products and will always try to find suppliers for new and innovative products. The breadth and depth of her experience is what sets her apart from other suppliers and we would say that Lisa offers a unique service that others will find hard to emulate. HOW MANY PROJECTS HAVE YOU NOW COMMISSIONED LISA TO WORK ON?
After completing our self-build project in 2009 in a speedy six months, we have now just embarked on another bigger project to build three more houses, each of which should reflect the clean, modern design that Lisa helped us to achieve on the first house. HOW DID LISA INTERPRET YOUR BRIEF & HOW DID SHE MEET YOUR EXACT DESIGN REQUIREMENTS?
Lisa was very good at interpreting our design brief. She was able to offer a range of products that would suit a particular situation. She also offered us alternative design ideas and the end result was always based on discussion. Lisa never tried to push us into a particular direction, but her wide range of experience in house building, house development and design means that she often has the optimum solution. We had quite specific views on certain elements of the kitchen design and Lisa took these and further optimized them, such that we think we now have the perfect kitchen design. In fact, our next three houses will feature more or less the same kitchen design. DID YOU FACE ANY OBSTACLES?
No building process would be complete without an obstacle or two. However, with Lisa’s help, no obstacle was too great. Scheduling orders and deliveries is always tricky and when our stair manufacturer told us our stairs would not be available to fit just a week before we were to move in, Lisa initially tried to negotiate directly with them. When this proved fruitless Lisa managed to arrange for the Melbros inhouse joinery shop, Springburn Joinery, to produce the stairs within a few days, and exactly as we had ordered them. n For more information visit www.peaktechnologyhomes.co.uk 10 revealed

esign Thinking is my concept of the thought process from a viewpoint of those who will use the space rather than those who build it or decorate it. Interior Design has little to do with interior decoration which is often misunderstood. The latter is the art of display of decorative items. Interior design is a thought process for those who live, work and relax inside a building, plane, boat etc. and how the occupants move around within that space safely and comfortably. Therefore a designer must not only have the skill for space planning but also be cognisant of legislation for the buildings use, building protective orders, weight restraints
performance of a product as being the wrong model for the task, they simply see a branded product with a good reputation under-performing and make their own conclusions. Therefore allowing anyone to simply apply a badge marked ‘interior designer’ to a project allows that individual or firm an opportunity to damage not only your reputation but the industry at large. I resent that as I’m badged to the same negativity by an industry wide bad reputation. I promote standards across the board of interiors, that naturally includes learning and teaching in performance and conduct, but particularly advice. YOUR KITCHEN STORAGE Recycling made easy with Krüshr The Krüshr Recycling Waste Compactor allows you to sort and crush your waste materials with an increased storage capacity of 400%, resulting in less trips to the outside bins. Choose either a fascia to co-ordinate with your kitchen (pictured) or a stainless steel fascia. Pull-out and swing-out waste bins These bins have separate compartments to sort waste and recycling materials easily. They are food safe and can also be used for storage. The pull-out bin is fixed to the door front for easy opening and closing. Keep your drawers tidy with inserts Drawer inserts make it easy to organise cutlery and stops cooking utensils cluttering up the worksurfaces. Also consider using extra large pan drawers for even more storage.
We’ve rounded up our favourite space-saving solutions to help you get the most out of your kitchen and make it work for you. Hafele offer a wide range of products that have been cleverly designed to make your kitchen more efficient, no matter what your style.
Corner baskets and pull-out shelves Don’t make things hard for yourself, invest in a pull-out or swing-out corner unit. The pull-out corner unit is cleverly designed so that the rear baskets automatically follow the front baskets when the door is opened, and there’s a choice of baskets to suit your chosen style. Alternatively swing-out corner baskets attach to the hinged door so as you open the door the front basket swings out, and the back basket pulls forward. Pull-out shelves allow you to easily access all the contents of the cupboard. Shelves are available as twin pull-outs or separate pull-outs.

FLYING HIGH
M
at Hibbert is a fine furniture designer with a passion for Kite Surfing. For the past 5 years Mat has been breaking his way into the design industry. With a string of successful commissions under his belt, and with his business expanding, the future looks promising. Ella Stewart caught up with Mat to find out more about his love for fine furniture and what inspired him to take the leap into the world of design. How did you venture into fine furniture making? From a young age I always wanted to design but throughout the first part of my life, from the ages of 12 through to 18, I only focused on kite surfing. It wasn’t until I moved up to London for 2 years to train as a Quantity Surveyor that I realised this wasn’t the career for me. I wanted to use my imagination and creativity more, so I moved back down to the coast and got into cabinet making and fine furniture design. What do you like most about your job? Everything is different day-to-day, there is a new challenge and technique to learn which is exciting compared to the job I had in London. I’ve never started a day where I’ve thought ‘Oh I’ve done this before’, although I’m sure I will get that one day! Where do you get your inspiration from? A lot of my ideas come from modern architecture, there are a lot of beautiful buildings. As a cabinet 14 revealed
DESIGN . HOME . INTERIORS 2014
maker I take a lot of my inspiration from buildings with different shapes. Irish furniture designer Joseph Walsh creates some awesome designs, as does Palo Santo, they both inspire me to keep designing new concepts. What’s been your favourite project so far? I sculpted an iPod Docking station in partnership with speaker & audio company Bower & Wilkins. That was really enjoyable as it was sort of done by eye so visualising what had to be done next was key. I was also able to incorporate a lot of the technical skills that I’ve learnt over the past 5 years. Can you be as creative as you want with your job or are there limits? Really creativity has no bounds, it is the client who has limitations. So if the client approaches you with a commission and they like what you’re about, and they like your style, then that is what they are buying into. Sometimes you get a client who knows exactly what they want and that’s all they want. There are obviously limitations to what you can do, but really you can be as imaginative as your brain will let you. What challenges you in your job? Every time you make new furniture you discover new techniques, some of which are techniques that I’ve never even thought about, let alone tried! The hard part is trying to overcome the obstacles while trying to make a profit. It is quite easy to take too much time learning new skills and not making money, I have to try and sort out problems while keeping up the pace.
INTERVIEW
What do you enjoy most about cabinet making? I really enjoy the design part of cabinet making, it’s exciting coming up with a new shape or new form. It’s also quite satisfying when it comes together and you start seeing your design as a three dimensional product that really works as a shape. What is your biggest achievement? I think so far it would be the initial start up of the business. It’s a big personal achievement that I got into gear and got the business up and running. It’s not the biggest achievement I’ll ever have, but so far it is probably that. How do you define the word success? Personally for me, in terms of my business, it is down to whether people are buying my designs or not. A lot of my friends and family say that I’m successful already because I’ve designed some nice things, but from my perspective you aren’t really successful unless people are buying into that idea. You could be the best cabinet maker in the world but if you can’t sell your work, then for me you aren’t really successful.
What piece of advice would you give to a budding entrepreneur? Don’t give up, even though it is really clichéd. It is difficult, I am still at the grass roots, there are a lot of shut doors and you will get a lot of no’s but eventually you will get a break and someone will give you a chance. It is really worth it, building a whole life for yourself. Where do you hope to see yourself in 5 years from now? I want to expand the business soon and hopefully have some apprentices working for me. I hope to keep pushing out new designs and developing new ideas. I also don’t want to get too complacent with my designs because I want to keep my work fresh and current. Do you still kite surf? Absolutely! I still do a lot of it, I was actually out in Brazil doing it for 2 months last winter. I still love it, definitely, it is my other main passion in life. n Find Mat on Facebook | www.mathibbertdesigns.co.uk revealed

Central island units are at the top of many wish lists as they not only provide extra storage and work space, but also provide an area for friends and family to gather. For the compact kitchen, extending the work surface and placing bar stools underneath is a simple way of creating somewhere for guests to sit, whilst you cook them dinner. When it comes to door finishes, contemporary, sleek, handleless designs remain on-trend, however alternative materials such as glass, are also proving to be extremely popular. DESIGN . HOME . INTERIORS 2014
This kitchen was part of a complete barn refurbishment for a young couple, Lisa Melvin Design worked alongside Springburn Joinery who created the beautiful Slide & Fold doors for the kitchen, along with all the other joinery requirements for the project. The couple were looking for a kitchen with the wow factor. They love to entertain so this needed to be a practical party space - they also have dogs so the flooring needed to accommodate muddy paws! The clients saw a kitchen on display at Gallery Showroom that they liked. The kitchen was ‘The Entertainer’, where the island unit looks like it is floating above a mirrored plinth, it accommodates every entertaining need with an eye catching bank of built in appliances. As the kitchen is in a barn with original beams, we wanted to highlight natural materials. A textured slate wall was chosen, which adds a natural, yet modern touch to the overall kitchen and creates a dramatic contrast with the Silestone Blanco Zeus Extreme white worktop. The Vitra Neoquarzite tiles in anthracite on the floor add further contrast to the white worktops and have a practical, durable finish, suitable for the pet dogs.
Ultra contemporary Keller Fuente units in a striking, white, high-gloss finish, bounce light around the space and complement the wooden beams. As the clients enjoy hosting parties, LED colour-changing lights from Sycamore Lighting were installed in the plinth and in beading at the base of the slate wall. A spectrum of colours enables the clients to choose one for every occasion and makes a strong style statement. This use of colour also brings warmth to an otherwise contemporary neutral palette. A distinctive, hanging, Elica Sienna hood had to be worked around the existing visible timber joists. This sits above a sleek, designer Kuppersbusch hob for a seamless finish. High performance Neff ovens make cooking a breeze and a Fisher & Paykel double fridge freezer provides plenty of storage when entertaining. The Fisher & Paykel double DishDrawer makes clearing up afterwards quick and easy. The wet zone features a Tekka Linea undermount sink in stainless steel, a favourite material for chefs, and an Astracast Professional tap completes the look with a handy InSinkErator added in for grinding food down. n www.lisamelvindesign.co.uk revealed

BATHROOM CASE STUDY
The ProSun Sunshower allows you to tan while you shower, the clients had seen it on Lisa’s Daily Design Knowledge blog and wanted her to incorporate it into their new bathroom, writes Sarah Mills This project was part of an entire home renovation in a vicarage. Upstairs, two bedrooms were reconfigured, which involved knocking down and moving walls to create a master bedroom with a dressing room and en-suite, which would feature the latest technology and designer fittings for a luxury wet room. The clients visited Lisa Melvin at Gallery Showroom to discuss their ideas for a stunning, boutique-style bathroom. They were immediately struck by the beauty of one of the bathroom displays, which featured Bisazza mosaic tiles. The couple wanted to incorporate the ProSun Sunshower, a revolutionary bronzing system that allows you to tan while you shower using a balanced UV light spectrum, into their design.
Design Process The shower area was cleverly placed so the clients could look out through the window onto spectacular views of the countryside inbetween a sleek, glass walk-in shower panel. Here, a striking wall of Bisazza tiles flow onto the easy-fit Aqua-Dec from the pioneers of wet room flooring Impey, for a luxury backdrop. A luxurious 400mm PuraVida overhead shower was chosen for total indulgence as the client likes to relax after a long day, a hand-shower was added for full body coverage.

Lisa created a calming, clutter free space using a designer built-in mirror cabinet which features a light sensor and shaving point. This sits above a Vero basin and wall-mounted chrome PuraVida tap mixer. A minimalist, wall-hung Vero toilet makes a more cohesive design, which is topped with a tall and striking wall mounted cabinet in a rich, anthracite oak.
Finishing Touches Additional designer features include the distinctive niches built into one wall, which has been fitted with mirrors and demister pads with intricate LED lights to illuminate every shelf. A built-in iPod docking system gives this space more designer appeal with a powerful integrated speaker and safety feature. A striking chrome Cat Ladder radiator contrasts perfectly against the large Vitra white Neo-quarzite tiles, which cover the majority of the walls and floor for a clean, neutral backdrop. A Thermonet under floor heating system features an easy-to-use touch-screen thermostat. n

Don’t wake your sleeping beauty. Consider using an acoustics partition roll to help sound proof the walls of your en-suite. Install an ultra quiet flush cistern, like Grohe’s Whisper Technology, for super quiet flush operation.
Give your lotions and potions a home include a niche within your stud walls or an under basin unit.

By using an epoxy grout eradicate the build up of grime in your grout joints. Alternatively apply a grout protector before the first use of your new en suite - try LTP Floor Treatment Grout Protector Spray.
3
Include an illuminated mirror to create a wow factor and give the illusion of space. The Halo mirror from Bathroom Origins ticks all the box’s and even includes a demista pad to avoid a steamy mirror!
4
Keep it simple - use a large format porcelain tile on your floor and walls, use mosaics to make your room pop.
7
8 Light up your life - don’t neglect this crucial part of your new en suite scheme. Choose LED, low energy, cool white shower lights available in a number of finishes. Save energy, power usage and no more changing light bulbs!

In the ladies the LED behind the black glass is pink and in the mens it’s blue. Duravit Black Vero sanitaryware creates dramatic impact with a wonderful, durable finish which provides a protective layer to help keep it clean. The striking black basins in both wash areas were teamed with Grohe’s wall-mounted Ondus 3-hole mixer in velvet black. To add to the feeling of luxury Molton Brown soap dispensers were included. Corian surfaces create the perfect finishing touch - in a bold, fuchsia pink for ladies and a calming grey for the men. As late as the early 1960’s many homes in Britain did not have a bathroom. Fast forward 50 years and our bathrooms have become an important room in our homes — a sanctuary to lock ourselves away from the fast pace of life. Baths are the perfect way to unwind and relax after a long day. Our clients often ponder over whether or not they should remove the bath and just have a splendid large shower instead. Most people insist they only shower and have maybe only bathed once or twice in the past year, so why bother keeping the bath? We always point out the minute you no longer have a bath is the minute you desperately want one! At Gallery Showroom we push out all the stops to create a stunning scheme, which will enhance your experience on every occasion you enter your bathroom sanctuary. We always try out new products on the market first then introduce them to your scheme so you can benefit from the latest designs and technology available. www.melbros.com/galleryshowroom | 01788 866930 revealed

1. Tried and tested concept Underfloor heating extends back to Neolithic times. Asians and Alaskan inhabitants used to draft smoke from fires through stone-covered trenches that led to the floors of their underground dwellings. The hot smoke heated the floor stones and then radiated into the living areas. From this ancient idea, underground heating has now evolved into modern systems using fluid-filled pipes or electrical cables and mats.
4. Comfortable, even heat Because these systems give an even distribution of heat across the whole room, they are said to be more efficient and, unlike radiator-based heat, there are no cold spots or draughts. Underfloor heating produces the ideal heating temperature for a home and, because it heats a larger surface area from the floor upwards at a lower temperature, it results in a more consistent heat. It also frees up wall space because you can get rid of some – or all – of your radiators.
8. Wired for heat A dry system is made up of a series of electric wires that are installed beneath or within your flooring. Depending on the size of the room you want to be heated and the flooring, you can choose between loose-fit wiring, which is flexible enough to fit into small or awkward spaces, electric cable systems or heating mats. Heating mats can be rolled out quickly and easily and are great for when you want to cover a large area flooring.

REASONS TO ENHANCE YOUR HOME WITH THERMONET ELECTRIC UNDERFLOOR HEATING
2. When in Rome Around 2,000 years ago, when legions of people from Rome moved to the colder north, they realised the growing need to provide winter warmth inside both public and private buildings. At this time an underfloor heating system was already available – the hypocaust, which translates from Greek as ‘heat from below’. These systems allowed hot air to flow underneath floors, which were raised, sitting on brick columns. 3. Unbeatable versatility From the more traditionally associated stone or tiled floors to wooden flooring, electric underfloor heating can be installed under pretty much all types of flooring nowadays. It can even be installed under carpet, providing the tog is 1.5 or less so the heat can penetrate through effectively and there is a 10mm layer of self-levelling compound to dissipate heat evenly. You can choose to have it installed in just one room, a specific area of your home or zoned and wirelessly controlled throughout the whole house.

5. Peace and quiet It suffers none of the creaks or groans of conventional copper pipes and radiators and, as well as being no more expensive than traditional heating methods, electric underfloor heating is virtually maintenance free. It is therefore going to reduce your longterm energy costs even further.
9. Easy installation With a dry system, electric heating sheets or cables are fitted beneath the flooring, usually on top of a layer of screed (to ensure the surface is completely flat) and a layer of floor insulation (to keep the heating source travelling upwards rather than down).
