MEET FORREST STONE Cleveland Young Latino Artist
by Lisa Laureano, El Sol de Cleveland I joined a small art club in grade school, Sister Mary Ink was my art teacher at Saint Anthony of Padua, Ms. Ink suggested I submitted one of my first creations: a paper woven apple basket titled “Apples for Sale” to the 2009 Padua Franciscan High School and Elementary Art show. Twenty-two schools participated that year with 264 works of art. I placed third, it was really an accomplishment at only 10 years old. My artwork was entered again in 2012, and I received an honorable mention. Ms. Ink encouraged me to pursue a career in the Arts. In High School my passion for the Arts grew and I enrolled in every art class that was offered. That was when I began to take my interest more seriously and decided to pursue Art as a career. I have created artwork using different techniques, including several colorful watercolor, acrylics and oil on canvas pieces. I designed a unique digital media I made with Photoshop as part of the Cleveland Clinic Expressionist Project, titled “Fighting Crime from a Health Perspective” for which I was given the Principal Choice Award by the Principal of Normandy during my High School graduation ceremony. This Particular digital media is now memorialized at Normandy HS. For many years I had the opportunity to create artwork in different styles from drawing charcoal, sharpies and pencil sketches, using pointillism technique, painting with acrylic, oil, pastels and watercolor, using 18K gold on canvas, drawing calligraphy with color pencils, wash painting with contour lines. I recently painted a clown inspired by Jackson Pollock’s technique of pouring and dripping paint, the paint literally flowing from a plastic bag, almost in the same way a cake is decorated. I describe myself as more of a classical artist using the skills of drawing and painting most over other art forms. By majoring in drawing or painting at CIA, I expect to perfect my skills and make progress in applying visually appealing composition, creating abstract objects such as trees, clouds, using digital resources, creating more inspirational work from brainstorming. From the Editor: Forrest has donated some of his paintings to the Northern Ohio Hemophilia Foundation ( he has been battling with a rare blood disorder himself and survived many challenges to be alive today). He also participated at the Hispanic Celebration month last year at Julia De Burgos Cultural Art Center. Currently, Forrest is working toward a certificate in Game Design at TRI -C, he started as a freshman at the Cleveland Institute of Art and plans to pursue a Bachelor of Arts. FOR HIS GLORY RELIGIOUS SECTION
How Churches of Christ responded when the 1918 ‘Spanish flu’ killed millions Many congregations canceled services, and some Christians focused on feeding and nursing the poor. written by John Hicks Cleveland saw its first case of the “Spanish flu in late September 1918. By November, 1,300 had died — 1 percent of the city’s population. The influenza would kill almost 700,000 in the United States and 50 million globally. It was the worst pandemic in modern history. Amid the dramatic lifestyle changes brought by the worldwide coronavirus outbreak, the experience of Christians more than a century ago is worth revisiting. As the flu spread across the U.S. in the late fall and early winter of 1918, theaters, schools, businesses and churches closed their doors for weeks. The Ohio Health Department advised churches to suspend their Sunday meetings for Oct. 20 and 27. No one protested, and 92 churches complied. However, the Russell Street Church of Christ in Brooklyn,OH  did not close its doors. The church approached the Red Cross with an offer of help. Their building became a temporary hospital because the city hospitals were turning away people. The Russell Street members, along with the Eleventh Street and Chapel Avenue congregations, poured their monetary and human resources into feeding and nursing the poor. The influenza epidemic, as A. B. Lipscomb wrote in the Cleveland Press, had “opened up a way for the enlargement of the sympathies of Christian people. As the influenza spread, the government recommended the cancellation of Sunday assemblies. The Christian Leader implored churches “to observe strictly all the regulations urged by our State Boards of Health and cooperate in every way. Churches in California, Minnesota, West Virginia, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas and all across the country suspended their regular services. Ben West of Painesviile, OH informed the Cleveland Press that “Sunday was the first day for twelve years that I have failed to attend service, and then added, “We had three funerals here Sunday. Though the church was not assembling, they were “busy attending the sick. Some died caring for others. The Cleveland Press reported that J. D. Northcut, an evangelist from Cleveland, fell ill with “influenza followed by pneumonia and died at the age of 43. He had given “almost continual attention to sufferers near him. ( Cont.)
M.C. Kurfees, the minister of the Campbell Street Church of Christ in Cleveland,OH., sent a letter to his members announcing the congregation’s compliance with the Ohio State Board of Health. “It behooves us, he wrote, “to cheerfully submit to this order and to exert all our energies in an earnest and sympathetic effort to cooperate with the benevolent purpose of our government to check the deplorable disease. Though churches suspended their large assemblies, they did not cease to worship. Rather, as E. D. Shelton, in Fayette City, Pa., wrote, “We worshipped God from house to house. H. E. Winkler, of Adairville, Ky., and his wife “worshipped in our home for three weeks. Kurfees recommended his congregants worship in their homes “as was sometimes done in the days of the apostles. Nevertheless, some experienced this as government interference. They resented the government’s orders to shut their doors on Sunday mornings. “We must obey God rather than man, a few argued. J. W. Dunn of Akron, OH, for example, applauded “one of our faithful ones who “approached the mayor and explained to him our convictions of duty on Lord’s-day services. The mayor consented but only if a few gathered; no large meetings were permitted. 10 SIGNS YOU NEED CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT
MEDICAL
by Dr. Mike Izquierdo
Headaches Headaches can be caused by a number of factors, including dehydration, malnutrition, oxygen deprivation, or a misalignment in the neck or spine. A chiropractor can help to relieve headaches and improve blood flow, which will increase the amount of oxygen that is supplied to the brain. Your chiropractor also may recommend a change to your diet to help you improve your overall health.
Joint or Muscle Pain If you are experiencing pain in your muscles and joints, your first reaction should not be to get the aspirin out of your medicine cabinet. Your back pain could be due to problems with musculoskeletal alignment. A chiropractor is trained to make sure your immune system is optimal by using back manipulations to relieve pain in your joints and muscles. A chiropractic adjustment will increase blood flow and nerve conductivity to the joints and muscles that are experiencing pain.
Your Job Requires You to Sit for Long Periods of Time If your job requires you to sit for long periods of time, especially hunched over a keyboard, it is not uncommon to wind up with very poor posture. Poor posture puts unwanted pressure on the upper back, neck, and shoulders. The pressure can cause the discs and bones to shift enough to cause problems such as a slipped or herniated disc.
Chronic Back Pain One of the most obvious signs that a chiropractic care visit is needed is if you are experiencing chronic low back pain or neck pain. There are multiple factors that can contribute to back pain, such as posture, how long you’re on your feet each day, and the type of work that you do.
The Soles of Your Shoes Wear Out Differently If you begin to notice that the soles of your shoes wear out differently, this is a sign that your body is out of alignment and needs Chiropractic Treatment. Uneven wear on your shoes is a very reliable indicator that you are experiencing a subluxation in the spine and need a chiropractic spinal manipulation to realign your spine to ensure the problem does not continue and turn into a chronic issue.
Limited Range of Motion If you notice that your arms and legs are not as flexible as they used to be, or if your neck won’t turn as far in one direction or the other due to radiating neck pain or back pain, this is a good indication that you need to see your chiropractor. Chiropractic adjustments realign the bones and joints, relieving pain and increasing the body’s range of motion. Having a normal range of motion helps the body to function optimally.
You Were Involved in a Recent Accident Being involved in an accident, such as a car or motorcycle collision, can cause serious injuries that only an experienced chiropractor can help heal. Many chiropractors specialize in car accident injuries and are able to diagnose and properly treat a multitude of different injuries. Sharp, Shooting Pain in Your Legs If you are experiencing shooting pain in your legs, or tingling and weakness, this could be a sign that you are suffering from a pinched nerve or slipped disc. A trained chiropractor can diagnose the cause of the pain in your leg and draw up a treatment plan to alleviate the unwanted pressure that is being placed on the nerve and causing you pain.
You’re an Active Person People having an active lifestyle and spend time working out or playing sports, that body is subjected to additional strain and pressure. This added stress can cause spinal manipulation. After spending time engaging in these activities, the body can become prone to pinched nerves, slipped discs, or other alignment problems. Seeing a chiropractic doctor regularly helps to keep your body functioning at its prime so you can continue to live the active lifestyle you love.
You Want to Live a More Health-Conscious Life If you want to live a more health-conscious life, or just want to be more aware of how to best take care of your body, your chiropractor is an excellent source of information. Your chiropractor can provide you with exercise routines, nutritional guidance, and specific techniques to help relieve stress. All of this, along with Chiropractic adjustment, will help to improve your physical and emotional well-being.
Editors Note: Dr. Mike Izquierdo is a holistic chiropractor at Lakewood Chiropractic Clinic, 15711 Madison Ave. Lakewood, 444107. He has been practicing for over 20 years and specializes in helping patients overcome chronic pain. His techniques are effective where others fall short.
