DOWNTOWN RALLY KICKS OFF CAMPAIGN FOR ISSUE 4 CLEVELAND – A large crowd of Cuyahoga Community College students, employees and other College supporters attended a lunchtime rally for Issue 4 inside Tower City Center today. The event kicked off the start of the campaign for Issue 4 by the Citizens for Cuyahoga Community College. Tri-C President Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton spoke at the rally about the importance of Issue 4 to Cuyahoga Community College, and about the significance of the College to the community, its present and future. Several co-chairs of the Issue 4 campaign also addressed the crowd, as did several current and former Tri-C students, who shared their personal stories about what Tri-C means to them and why Issue 4 is so critical to the College. Issue 4 is a proposed 1.6 mill replacement levy and an increase of 0.3 mills for a 10-year period. Passage of Issue 4 will ensure that student tuition remains affordable, student services are enhanced, high-quality university transfer programs continue, education and training programs are updated, job skills training is upgraded, and the College continues to improve training for good jobs. The levy provides 26% of the College’s operating revenue. Issue 4 would cost citizens an additional $1.50 a month or an additional $18.00 a year on a $100,000 property. This fall Tri-C reported its largest enrollment ever, with more than 30,000 students. The College has frozen its tuition for the third consecutive year to make Tri-C as accessible as possible, salaries of top administrators have been frozen, and certain budget items have been cut even as state funding for the College was reduced by five million dollars this year alone. The Plain Dealer, El Sol De Cleveland and The Call & Post newspapers have all endorsed Issue 4, as have the AFL-CIO, the Greater Cleveland Partnership, and COSE. Hoover, President & CEO, HooverMilstein; Cathy Kilbane, Senior Vice President & General Counsel, American Greetings Corporation; Brad Sellers, Community Leaders; and, Louis Stokes, former U.S. Representative and Senior Counsel at Squire, Sanders, and Dempsey L.L.P. Many of our EL SOL staff over the years have gone to school at TRI-C including Editor Liza De Jesus. The College has had a long history of extending thier programs into the latino community of Greater Cleveland. EL SOL endorses Vote for Issue 4.
