A BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS. A WELCOMING COMMUNITY. Millersville’s campus stretches over 250 scenic acres, graced by manicured lawns, towering oaks and pines, and our pond. Approximately 50 percent of Millersville’s campus grounds are maintained organically. It’s just one of the reasons why the University has earned a spot in the Princeton Review’s Guide to 353 Green Colleges. Just beyond campus are the rolling hills of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. You’ll find a safe and warm community where “hellos” are comfortably exchanged and close friendships are easily formed. Want a larger city experience? Minutes away is the historic and vibrant city of Lancaster—a thriving business center and a hub of culture and entertainment with dozens of art venues, cafés, restaurants, shops and boutiques. An Amtrak train is also available in Lancaster, providing easy access to major city destinations, such as the Philadelphia Art Museum and Broadway in Manhattan.

Alex “ Lancaster City has a lot of fun things to do. You can hear all kinds of music for free on Third Fridays. There are fireworks at Clipper Stadium, Central Market food vendors and all the unique shops along Queen Street. Plus, there’s the Fulton Theatre, with Student Rush tickets, and across the street is a great ice cream shop! Whatever you’re up for, it’s the perfect night out.”

n Located in downtown Lancaster, Millersville University’s Ware Center provides students with arts and cultural offerings. n Millersville University is located 11⁄2 hours from Philadelphia and Baltimore, 21⁄2 hours from Washington, D.C., and 3 hours from New York City. An Amtrak station is also located nearby in downtown Lancaster.

ACADEMICS: IN-DEPTH AND PERSONAL Millersville students have two big advantages: the resources of a large liberal arts university and the support of a caring, residential learning community. This means small, interactive classes, with an average class size of 25. A nationally recognized faculty, including acclaimed scientists, artists, writers, economists, educators and mathematicians. Hands-on learning opportunities within each academic program. Modern facilities with the latest equipment and technologies. Support and encouragement are everywhere at Millersville. If you have the drive to succeed, we’re firmly committed to providing the tools and opportunities you need to reach your goals. Among the highest-ranked public universities in Pennsylvania, Millersville is listed by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top public universities in the North.

5

Christopher Hardy, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Biology

“ Plant science in the 21st century will be the preeminent contributor in our quest for sustainable foods, fibers, fuels and biodiversity conservation. As a regional center for exciting botanical study, Millersville is uniquely suited to ignite the intellect and inner botanist of its students.

With our emphasis on the liberal arts, you’ll gain the skills that today’s employers value most and that are never obsolete: the ability to think critically, write effectively and speak persuasively. Paired with specific preparation for a wide range of careers, you’ll graduate ready to reach your professional goals. Choose from more than 100 programs of study, each of which has distinctive strengths: n Students in our education program have achieved an overall passing rate of 99 percent on the licensure tests needed for teaching certification. n Our nationally recognized Meteorology program boasts a state-of-the-art, 7,000-sq.-ft. facility, including the DeSouza Weather Station. n The Department of Computer Science is one of only seven nationally accredited undergraduate computer science programs in Pennsylvania. n The Broadcasting program operates two television studios, digital video and audio computer editing suites, multi-track audio recording facilities and a 24-station computer lab with multimedia software. Students get plenty of hands-on experience producing programming for the campus cable TV channel and its radio station. n The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences’ investments in classroom technology, music, and the visual and performing arts are enhancing students’ learning experiences and preparing them for their future careers.

PROFESSORS WHO GUIDE WITH REAL EXPERIENCE Millersville’s professors are recognized leaders in their fields. What does that mean for you? An accomplished geneticist will lead your genetics course. A published author will teach your English class. And an experienced therapist will teach you psychology. You’ll be developing relationships with expert professors, not teaching assistants. Millersville faculty members are passionate teachers who will challenge and support you. They will inspire in you a passion for learning and awaken in you a sense that anything is possible.

Dennis B. Downey, Ph.D. Professor of History and Director of the University Honors College

“ Every challenge is an opportunity. This is most apparent in the expanding opportunities for faculty-student collaborative research. Across campus, students apply theory and expand their knowledge base through hands-on research with faculty in the sciences, humanities, social sciences and the diverse fields of education. Such experiences are critical to professional development and success.”

9 7

HONORS COLLEGE The Honors College is an unparalleled program specially designed to provide a challenging and enriching education for talented and motivated students across all majors who want to raise their academic and professional sights far beyond what they have imagined.

Students in the Honors College are able to participate in field school and study abroad experiences, such as this one, which was hosted in Bermuda.

As a community of scholars who live and learn together in Reighard Hall, the Honors College encourages interdisciplinary inquiry, research, community involvement, critical thinking, creative expression and constructive engagement. Through academic guidance and the support of faculty and student mentoring, students in the program become prepared for success in graduate school and the business world. The Honors College actively recruits students with combined SAT scores in Reading and Math of 1200 or higher and who are in the top 10% of their high school class. Since motivation, enthusiasm and commitment to learning are often better predictors of success in the program than test scores, all interested students are encouraged to apply—even those who do not meet the formal criteria. CIVIC ENGAGEMENT IS STEEPED IN OUR CULTURE The passion to lead and serve—to focus on others—will become a part of you. Every individual has the capacity for leadership, and we work to develop that potential in our students. We connect them to national civic leaders, as well as hands-on leadership initiatives ranging from urban revitalization, to sustainable agriculture, to health and nutrition imperatives. Tutoring children in city schools…working in a homeless shelter in New York City…conducting a food drive to fight hunger. During the past year, nearly 2,500 Millersville students participated in service-learning activities, providing more than 170,000 hours of service to the community. This commitment to service supplements classroom learning and leaves a powerful impression on each and every student.

The Corporation for National and Community Service recognized Millersville with a place on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service to America’s communities.

It serves as an impressive supplement to our students’ résumés and academic transcripts when they apply for graduate school or employment.

Zach “ Here at Millersville, we just don’t talk about how great our community is; we experience it and live it throughout campus. A CULTURE OF CREATIVITY, ENGAGEMENT AND INNOVATION Each year, students produce three main-stage theatrical shows, as well as several one-act plays and staged readings. We even have a professional costume shop on campus, home to the famous Loeb Costume Collection. Love music? Make your own at Millersville. Choose from a dozen ensembles, including orchestra, concert bands, jazz bands, various choirs and chorus organizations, marching band and even a West African dance and drum ensemble. MUTV is Millersville’s on-campus cable station, giving you the hands-on opportunity to write, direct, produce or star in productions.

Tony Elliot

Associate Professor, Communication & Theatre “ Theatre is the place where all of the arts come together…literature, music, dance and the visual arts. It’s all there in a theatre production. At Millersville, we welcome students from all majors to participate in our shows, and we challenge and engage our audiences with every new project.”

17

Millersville University’s Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center brings the arts together and provides a focused approach to the importance of creativity, innovation and engagement for students and the community. Using state-of-the-art technology, the Winter Center provides the optimal experience in education and entertainment. Among its features are a professional recording studio, a one-of-a-kind piano lab, art galleries and a dance studio, plus concert, performance and recital halls with world-class acoustics. Exhibiting student artwork is part of the experience at Millersville. There are numerous galleries throughout campus, including one dedicated to showing student work. Whether it is oil painting, sculpture or jewelry making, inspiration is encouraged. In nearby Lancaster, students can explore the cultural offerings featured at Millersville University’s Ware Center or visit more than 70 arts venues, including Gallery Row, which showcases the work of many successful artist alumni from Millersville.

18

HOUSING AND DINING THAT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL AT HOME Construction is under way on eight new halls to provide an innovative living/learning environment for students. The choices range from joint bedrooms, with no more than two residents sharing a bathroom, to fully furnished suites that include a living room and private bedrooms. Also featured in the halls are large study areas, game rooms, Wi-Fi throughout and a smart laundry facility, where students can monitor the progress of their wash/dry cycles online. Freshmen and sophomores who are not commuting live on campus in residence halls, which are coed by wings/floors. Suite-style housing halls are also available.

FEELING SAFE AND SECURE… Student safety and security are always a top priority of the Millersville University Police Department. Important campus security features include electronic card access, peripheral door alarms, fire alarms, smoke detection, sprinkler system, emergency blue phones/push stations, mass notification alert system, siren system, the MU Alert (text message system) and the campus Threat Assessment Team. So it is no surprise that, in a campus survey, more than 90 percent of our students indicated they feel safe on campus.

…TO WELL-FED AND HEALTHY Rushing from class to class will build up your appetite quickly. That’s why there are eight dining facilities conveniently located throughout campus. From buffet-style dining halls, like The Upper Deck, to the deli-style speed and convenience of The Galley, you can be sure of a great meal to suit your unique tastes and busy schedule. n Nutritious, tastefully prepared meals

are designed to meet a wide range of dietary requirements. n Choice of eight meal plans allows students to

determine the right option that suits them. n Wide range of service hours.

GO MARAUDERS!

Marauders care just as much about the community as they do about winning. They raise money to benefit Make-A-Wish, mentor young athletes and host “Parents Night Out, Sports Spectacular,” where parents can enjoy a night out while their kids have fun with Millersville athletes.

Millersville fields 19 varsity intercollegiate athletic teams that compete at the NCAA Division II level as part of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The Marauders have a proud winning tradition, having achieved many conference and national championships. Our student-athletes are also ranked #1 in the PSAC for academic excellence. For the sixth straight year, more than 100 Millersville athletes—from football, to field hockey, to tennis—were designated as Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athletes. Gina

“ All my classes and professors contributed

to preparing me for my first job in some way or another. It still seems surreal that I landed the position I wanted at an amazing company six months before I graduated.”

The Four-Year Career Management Plan gives students clear, specific direction from their first year through graduation. Students meet with their advisors, set goals and explore majors and activities. With assistance from Millersville staff, students attend career fairs while they develop and update their résumés. Along the way, students sharpen their job search and interviewing skills. They plan meticulously for success—and, not surprisingly, they achieve it. When you graduate, you’ll join 65,000 Millersville alumni around the world. Ours is a proud and loyal alumni community—a network of highly successful and caring professionals to whom you’ll be connected for life.
