As a student employee for the Winter and Ware Performing Arts Centers, I was able to help plan large scale events like the Rock the Dock, as well as travel to New York City for the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) Conference, the world’s largest networking forum for performing arts professionals. As president of Marauder Music Productions, I learned leadership, organization and innovation skills that will give me an edge when interviewing for my first job. The opportunities are endless.
Sarah Newswanger During my time at Millersville University, I have been fortunate to have a number of piano performance and teaching experiences. I have taught individual piano lessons in the prep program as well as privately, teaching students age 6 to 30. I also partnered with the Wounded Warriors Project co-teaching group piano lessons for veterans, as well as participated in the Lancaster International Piano Festival. These opportunities, combined with the prestigious Presser Scholarship and excellent training I received in my music classes, have provided invaluable experience as I begin to establish my own private piano studio.
Jordan Shomper The Department of Music has presented numerous opportunities for teaching, performing and to exercise my own entrepreneurial skills! I have been able to teach elementary general music through a Music for Everyone Scholarship and have also taught private vocal lessons in the middle school program. My experience as the student conductor for the Millersville Chorale led to receiving the James E. Zwally scholarship for aspiring conductors. I have also taken advantage of the opportunities to perform in master classes with leading singers and “Meanwhile Back at Cinderella’s” through OperaLancaster. I have even been able to lead our student American Choral Directors Association chapter in hosting the annual Pennsylvania Fall Conference. MU has the opportunities—you need to grab them!

Josh Martin I play in a band called The Wonder Years. We have released four studio albums and completed 17 full U.S. tours, 10 European tours, three Australian tours and two trips to Southeast Asia, totaling 45 states and 22 countries. My education at Millersville provided me with the skills necessary to be successful—extensive music training, a strong business foundation, and experience with audio recording techniques and equipment.

Students participate in “Creative Campus” initiatives as performers, educators and entrepreneurs, and in real-world teaching projects prior to student teaching. BACHELOR OF ARTS IN MUSIC: PERFORMANCE EMPHASIS Performers as Entrepreneurs The Bachelor of Arts in Music program provides a broad understanding of the integral role of music in society. To prepare students for graduate study and/or a career in the arts, a working knowledge of American music and Western art music is developed, including history, literature and sources in art and vernacular traditions. Research into areas of specific interest is encouraged beyond the classroom and students are challenged to make music through analysis, composition, improvisation and performance. INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM • Students learn how to identify and apply related concepts in the curriculum, including historical, theoretical, pedagogical and practical. • Develop critical thinking and writing skills and a competency in working with musical technology. • Knowledge of music history with both written and oral communication is fostered and students are expected to attain a high level of performance on their major instruments. • As an undergraduate music performance major, students are now able to obtain Kodály Certification and add a newly created Entrepreneurial Minor to their degree program.

Minor in Music • Designed for students majoring in fields other than music who are interested in developing their performance skills on an instrument or voice.
• Courses, in addition to private lessons, are designed to reinforce the overall musical background of the student. • The Minor in Music is not intended as professional preparation for a career in music, but for personal enrichment. • Admission to the program is offered by audition to students with a strong musical background. • Music Minors take required and elective music courses and receive many of the same benefits as music majors, including private instruction and opportunities for positions in Millersville University’s top performing ensembles.

Liz Fulmer I released Tall Tales, my first EP. Each of the five songs on the album are lyric-based with folk, pop, and rock influences. Tall Tales tells the story of a relationship from beginning to end with each song acting as its own part of the whole. It is available for download on iTunes, CDbaby, and Amazon. Millersville University’s Ware Center in downtown Lancaster fosters entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation. Students with an interest in Music Business Technology will forge new alliances and create new opportunities as they use the city as a laboratory for ideas and an incubator for creative work. Downtown performances and lectures are offered in a rich acoustical and engaging environment. Master classes, some in conjunction with renowned visiting artists, are housed in this venue as well. THE WINTER VISUAL AND PERFORMING AR TS CENTER Millersville University’s Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center is a premiere performing arts center for arts learning in the 21st century. The center includes a performance hall, concert hall, recital hall, art gallery, dance studio and advanced technology offerings including:
• Piano Lab: As the only one of its kind in the United States, the lab houses 40 Yamaha Clavinova digital pianos, which are connected to each other as well as to the instructor. With this technology, students can listen to each other play, have the instructor isolate one piano and even control what the students are hearing. All Clavinovas are equipped with a computer, enabling recording and composing students to work with MIDI files, ProTools and Logic to arrange music and edit tracks. • Disklavier: The Yamaha DCFX Disklavier’s RemoteLive technology enables a pianist to perform in one location and have his or her keystrokes and pedal movements transmitted live, in real time, to other networked Disklavier pianos anywhere in the world. It combines perfectly synchronized video and audio plus MIDI broadcast from a single location to multiple locations. • Steinman Foundation Recording Suite: Containing state-ofthe-art equipment and acoustically adjustable surfaces, students learn how to record performances, as well as edit and master the final track. Students can set up mics, amps and record musicians through ProTools and Logic from a live performance and are also able to utilize isolation booths for various pieces of a larger group. Not only can the recording studio satisfy the needs of bands in the studio, but it can also record concerts patched in from our acoustically-sound performance halls.

ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES • University Chorale serves as the vocal chamber ensemble of Millersville University and is our most select and demanding choir in terms of time and repertoire. • University Choir, the largest ensemble at MU, is open to all students by audition and performs varied masterworks from all periods of music history. • Cantilena Women’s Chorus is a select ensemble of women’s voices from diverse fields of study and is dedicated to the performance of beautiful and compelling repertoire of all styles. • Marauder Men’s Glee Club is the newest vocal ensemble at Millersville University and was conceived as part of the great tradition of men’s collegiate singing. The club’s repertoire includes works written especially for them. • Concert Band invites all interested woodwind, brass, percussion and string bass players to join. Comprised of approximately 70 collegiate musicians from all majors on campus, the Concert Band is dedicated to the finest repertoire and often features nationally recognized guest performers and conductors. Auditions are not required for membership, but will take place in order to finalize part assignments. General education credit is available.

• Jazz Ensemble performs a variety of musical styles from the jazz and commercial idioms in the Big Band and combo formats. Guest artists, who appear regularly with the band have included Ernie Watts, John Fedchock and Tom Irvin, as well as other regional jazz musicians. Auditions are required for acceptance. General education credit is available. • Jazz Lab Band is a “big band” that provides a means for students to further develop jazz interpretation/reading skills and also become acquainted with basic improvisational practices. No audition is necessary. General education credit is available. • Marauder Marching Band offers students the excitement of a corps-style collegiate marching band and performs at home football games in addition to periodic appearances at away games and collegiate and high school marching band exhibitions. Membership is open to all students, regardless of major. There are no auditions for instrumentalists.
• Wind Ensemble is made up of approximately 45 of the finest brass, woodwind and percussion players at the University and performs advanced contemporary and traditional music. The Wind Ensemble often features nationally recognized guest performers and conductors. Auditions are required for acceptance.
• West African Dance and Drum Ensemble is designed to provide an in-depth analysis of West African culture and history focusing on musical traditions, pedagogical practices and musical aesthetics. Students participate in learning traditional West African dance and drumming pieces studied in the classroom.
• Flute Ensemble performs a variety of concerts and church services from Philadelphia to Gettysburg. Repertoire includes standard material arranged for flute ensembles and a number of compositions that have been written and published specifically for the ensemble.
• Percussion Ensemble performs a wide array of repertoire including classic percussion ensemble literature, jazz percussion and world music styles, and is credited with the premiers of many new works and arrangements for the medium.
• Guitar Ensemble performs works for large ensemble, quartet, trio and duo, including arrangements written specifically for them. The ensemble’s repertoire ranges from the Renaissance through present day, and consists of classical, pop/rock, jazz and world music. They periodically perform with special guest artists, and have provided music for recitals and events at various venues along the East Coast of the United States. • Orchestra is dedicated to advancing the performance experience of its members and performs at least twice a semester. Through established repertoire and contemporary music, the orchestra’s concerts cultivate interdisciplinary connections, building a wide and varied audience. General education credit is available for non-music major Millersville University students.
• Commercial Music Lab Band is a lab band that provides a means for students to further develop their skills and become acquainted with the commercial music atmosphere of rock and pop. Not only do students work on musicality, but all aspects of show and entertainment production. • Commercial Music Ensemble performs a variety of commercial music including, but not limited to pop, rock and blues. Students will also have the opportunity to further their knowledge of music production through various performances that will occur.

You should prepare and perform two contrasting pieces of repertoire that best demonstrates your level of musical and technical mastery. Items for the portfolio may include any material that showcases your experience in business, technology and/or performance as it relates to music. Portfolios can contain such items as CD recordings, music scores of compositions, lead sheets for original songs you wrote, concert programs, promotional material for your band that you created, video of your band performing, your music biography or other material that showcases your creativity.
