MUSIC CAMPS with Teaching Artist Kate Umble
BANG ON A CAN (Become A Recording Artist, Perform Live In Concert!) For creative kids who love making their own music! Here students will create their own instruments using found objects and compose music for their own truly unique ensemble. Then they will get to be rock stars as they rehearse and record their songs. Emphasis will be placed on improvisation, techniques of music notation, and working together. At the end, students will be able to take home their instruments and a recording of their compositions. And we’ll close the camp with a live performance for parents, friends, and other guests!
KIDS, MEET THE BAND! This camp is perfect for kids who are fascinated with band instruments of all sorts, who are interested in playing, but who may want to explore many instrumental options. Over the course of this week, students will get a personal hands-‐on introduction to a different band instrument every day (such as the trumpet, trombone, saxophone, flute, clarinet, and percussion) learning how to put it together, how to hold it, and how to make a characteristic sound. On Day 5 we will enjoy a band concert my professional musicians.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS DANCE CAMPS
with Teaching Artist Priscilla Kaufhold DANCE A STORY (Week 1). The first session of this camp will focus on the African folktale “Anansi the Spider is Lost” which is based on the children's book Anansi by Gerald McDermot. This story spins the tale of Anansi, a very mischievous spider and lovable folk-‐hero from the Ashanti people of Ghana. His children, with their own special gifts, save their dad from each new peril he encounters -‐most of his own design. The students will create movement, design costumes, and play music as the trickster Anansi leaps, tumbles and skitters from one predicament to another. The students will also create a giant spider web to set the stage for their performance on day five! DANCE A STORY (Week 2) will be based on Susan Cooper’s book The Selkie Girl. The original dance piece created -‐ “Legend of the Selkie” -‐ will explore the underwater world of the ocean through creative movement. Students will swim as a school of fish, a pod of whales, and play as otters in the kelp to the Celtic music of Jared Denhard! A fisherman interrupts the joyful existence of a Selkie and her sisters to create a family of his own. Clever costumes and props help the magical transformation from Selkie to human form. On day five the students will share their Dance Story creation in a performance for their family and friends. DANCING THROUGH THE DECADES. Experience a dynamic twentieth century movement montage by Dancing Through the Decades! Students will learn dance steps from each decade of the twentieth century. Knowing these steps can help the students with the audition process for their future shows. This entertaining showcase is an anthology of the changes in social dance styles and the concurrent changes in musical trends and clothing fashions from 1900-‐ 2000. The dancers will revisit the past both through music and dance! Emphasis will be put on how to walk and move in differently styled costumes hailing from the Millersville University Costume Shop. Besides being great fun – it's historically accurate! On day five the students will perform dances from their favorite decades for family and friends.
THEATER CAMPS
with Teaching Artist Laura Korach Howell
MOVING THROUGH TIME. In this camp students will explore different kinds of theatre through the ages – beginning with Everyman, we will continue with the Greeks, through the Romans, Commedia and Shakespeare. But we won’t stop there! We will also explore art and music from those specific periods through creative movement, carrying the art off the page, into our bodies and onto the stage. A WORLD OF CHARACTERS. Shakespeare said, “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players…” How many times have you heard that? A lot? Maybe because it’s true. The world is full of characters full of all kinds of wants and needs and hopes and dreams. We can’t possibly know them all, but in this camp we will become acquainted with some of them, using Shakespeare as our guide. Through his comedies, tragedies and histories, we will explore clowns, fools, lovers, monsters, madmen, and even angry parents – to name a few.
