Summer Camps Discover a world of inspiration and creativity at Millersville University’s ARTS SMARTS Camps in Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts for preschool-aged kids and those entering grades K-8. Week long age-appropriate programs are designed to encourage artistic expression and appreciation, foster knowledge and skills, and inspire the imagination through an active handson exploration of the artistic process. They are also just plain fun (and the best bargain in the region)! And no previous experience is necessary. At the end of the week, each camp will conclude with a performance or exhibition for parents/caregivers to enjoy their children’s artistic creations. Our faculty of teaching artists is comprised of select Millersville University arts-education students and several Arts faculty members, all highly experienced and deeply committed to creating the highest quality arts programming for children and youth. (And all have their child clearances.) No camp will be a repeat of another, so it is perfectly fine to enroll in as many as four camps of the same discipline. Specific session titles and descriptions, along with faculty bios, can be found online at www.ArtsMU.com/arts-smarts-camp For those campers wishing to stay the whole day, a supervised lunch period will take place between morning and afternoon camp sessions. (Campers bring their own lunches; refrigeration is available.)
Attended drop-off and pick-up. Fees: Each half-day week-long camp is $100. Enrollment is limited. Camps will be filled on a first-come, firstserve basis. Scholarships are available to those families who demonstrate financial need. Please contact: Barry.Kornhauser@millersville.edu if interested.
NEW THIS SUMMER MULTI-DISCIPLINARY ARTS CAMPS For pre-school children ages 4-5 (A.M. only) MULTI-DISCIPLINARY ARTS CAMPS For students grades 6-8 (P.M. only) “I want to personally thank you for this excellent program. At the end of the week my son…was begging to continue with your camp. This surprised his parents because even though we have tried mightily to give him well rounded experiences, he typically prefers more physical (I might even say violent) activities. Whatever your camp and instructors did, they lit the arts spark for him. Thank you, thank you.” -Parent of Arts Smarts Camper “Thank you!! This was such a blessing to our family. This became [our daughter’s] time to shine. Prior to the camp, she was very inward and private. Due to this program, she has come “out of her shell” and bloomed because she had a chance to. My heart is joyful. Thank you and your staff for their efforts! Words cannot express our sincere gratitude. Well done!” –Parent of Arts Smarts Camper
Camp Descriptions VISUAL ARTS Campers will enjoy a mix of mediums and methods as they actively explore two- and three-dimensional art forms in age-appropriate sessions that also mix fun and learning. Students at each grade level can attend morning and afternoon VISUAL ARTS camps one or BOTH weeks and have a different enriching experience in each. They should dress to get messy; smocks are recommended for these age-appropriate camps in which creativity and selfexpression are emphasized. Proper use and care of the materials is all part of the learning. Both weeks will end with a Ware Center exhibit of the campers’ original art works, and there’ll be enough work created to start your very own in-home art museum!
MUSIC Through voice, body, and musical instruments – homemade and otherwise – campers enrolled in MUSIC sessions will engage in creative expression, honing vocal, kinesthetic, and instrumental skills while having a blast… and a toot…and a plink…and a boom. These camps are designed to nurture their natural curiosity, increase their love of music, and expand their artistic horizons through age-appropriate songs, movement and music activities. All MUSIC camps will offer a different curriculum, so campers can enjoy morning and afternoon sessions of song each week and have a new experience every time. At week’s end, they will perform a “concert” for families and friends.
Camp Descriptions THEATRE “To be or not to be…enrolled in Arts Smarts THEATRE Camps?” That’s an easy one to answer – Be Enrolled! Theatre is a great means for young people to see, hear, feel, think, imagine, and do! Campers here explore the fundamentals of drama by exercising voice, body, the imagination, concentration and collaborative skills, while building confidence and a creative spirit. Age-appropriate theater games and story building techniques will be used to examine such dramatic elements as character, theme, and dialogue, as well as elements of production, and each session will offer a unique curriculum so kids can attend any or all, and be promised experiences worthy of bravos. They’ll also earn their own bravos for miniperformances at the close of each week.
“Totally awesome. I enjoyed all the fun kids and teachers I met. They taught me a lot!” -Arts Smarts Camper
