Dear Friends in the Arts, We are half way through our 2013-14 Season and the second half holds an astounding number of exciting performances and events. We kick off our Spring Season with Allergro’s Music in the Round “Rhapsody in Blue” on Friday, January 24 and follow it on that Saturday with an original, one-person theatrical tour-de-force “Humble Honor: Witness to Gettysburg,” written and performed by Jeremy Kendall.

We continue to add performances throughout the season, but added too late to make this brochure. Also, the brochure does not list the Ware Center Spring Film Series. Humble Honor: Witness to Gettysburg A work-in-progress, one-man play written and performed by Jeremy Kendall Saturday, January 25 – 7:30 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster $ Pay what you will Interested in the stories of unknown soldiers and civilians whose lives intersected at the Battle of Gettysburg, Kendall weaves together portraits of our ancestors who fought, died and witnessed the three days that changed the course of one of the bloodiest wars in our history. Based on historical facts, but with artistic license, Kendall hopes to bring even the most dedicated history buffs along on an emotional journey. Jeremy Kendall graduated with an M.F.A. in acting from the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has appeared in numerous regional theaters, indie films and commercials across the country, and is proud to be a member of Actor’s Equity and SAG/AFTRA.

An Evening of Chamber Music: MU Faculty & Friends Xun Pan, piano; Vera Volchansky, violin; Simon Maurer, violin; Madeleine Darmiento, viola; Sara Male, cello Friday, January 31 – 7:30 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster $15 general, MU students free with ID Pianist Xun Pan teams up with Millersville’s string faculty and friends for an exciting evening of chamber music—works by Prokofiev, Debussy, along with Dvorak’s most beloved Piano Quintet in A Major—a perennial audience favorite. This quintet gushes with warmth and lyricism, Czech folk melodies and dances. Rounding out the evening will be Prokofiev’s Cello Sonata in C Major, Op. 119.

Skink – Dance, Theater, Circus! Saturday, February 1 – 11 a.m. (doors open at 10 a.m. for pre-show activities) Winter Center – Millersville $8 adults, $4 children 12 and under Set to a wide range of music, from pop to classical, Skink is a collection of 14 fast-paced vignettes by JUNK Dance Co. in which the dancers portray characters and creatures of zany proportions. The performers use strange and unusual props, costumes, and lighting effects to create worlds of magic and wonder. Some of the three-ring-worthy attractions include: a 10 ft. tall disco cow that stumbles awkwardly on stilts, an old man who dances on his head, and a madcap ringmaster and the polka-dotted lizard for which the show is named. This is a “small-top circus that packs big laughs.” - The Philadelphia Inquirer
Brian Sanders’ JUNK Dance Company Saturday, February 1– 7:30 p.m. Winter Center – Millersville $20 regular, $17 seniors, $5 students – reserved seating Among the likes of Pilobolus, MOMIX and Cirque de Soleil, Brian Sanders’ JUNK is known for their ingenious use of found objects and clever inventions that bridge the gap between dance and physical theater. Sanders’ choreography blends traditional dance theater with an inventiveness and physicality that gives reason for critics to hail JUNK as “Philly’s most imaginative perpetrator of dare-devilish physical theater” and declare Sanders as “the city’s most exciting choreographer.” This project is supported by a grant from Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour, a program developed and funded by The Heinz Endowments; the William Penn Foundation; the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency; and The Pew Charitable Trusts and administered by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.

Red Rose & Shamrock Irish Music Festival Saturday, February 8 – noon to 9 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster All Day Pass – $25 general, $21 seniors, $10 students, free under 12 Dinner Hall – $15 additional, which includes refreshments and beverages A day long celebration of all things Celtic—music, food and dance, featuring performances by Charlie Zahm & Tad Marks, Rebel Hearts Irish Dancers, Fire in the Glen, Kilmaine Saints, with headliner Barleyjuice. With five studio albums and a double CD collection to date, Barleyjuice—five kilted yanks—is currently one of the most beloved celtic rock bands in the USA. Kyf Brewer’s signature whiskeysoaked vocals perfectly trademark the group’s quick-witted and catchy originals, and partner Keith “Swanny” Swanson is no slouch, lithely covering additional lead vocals, guitar, mandolin, whistle, bouzouki and bagpipes. Both originally piped in the Loch Rannoch Pipe Band, and performed in Edinburgh’s Millennium March for Prince Charles.

Louis Vyner Scholarship Competition
Sunday, February 9 – 2:30 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster $10 general, MU students free with ID The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra made its official debut on May 1, 1947, under the baton of Conductor Louis Vyner. Dr. Vyner, also a professor of music at Millersville University, was a respected conductor throughout the Susquehanna Valley. Annually, the University presents the Louis Vyner Performance Award, which is given to a full-time music major who has been selected through an audition process. Rev. Al Sharpton – “Go Tell Pharaoh” Wednesday, February 12 – 7:30 p.m. Winter Center – Millersville Free, tickets required Al Sharpton is the president of the National Action Network (NAN) and one of America’s most renowned civil rights leaders. Like Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., his use of passive resistance and non-violent civil disobedience has had an irrefutable impact on national politics. In his talk, he reminds us that the “Promised Land” has not yet been reached by many in America because of the color of their skin, their accent or their religion.

Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest Thursday, February 13 – 7 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster Free Created and supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. This exciting program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage. This regional competition will feature high school students from Berks, Lancaster and Lebanon Counties. The winner of this regional competition will go on to compete at the state competition, held at the Governor’s mansion in Harrisburg, Pa. From there the winner will participate in the national finals in Washington, D.C.

Allegretto Youth Orchestra Sunday, February 16 – 4 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster $10 general – at the door only Allegretto’s diverse program for a chilly month includes Rossini’s Overture to La Gaza Ladra, Charles Ives’ orchestral version of his song Charlie Rutledge, Grieg’s Holberg Suite, Dvorak’s Serenade for Wind Instruments and Beethoven’s sprightly Leonore Overture No. 1. Truly a delightful concert to chase away the winter chill.

Rosa, A Tribute to Rosa Parks
Tuesday, February 18 – 7:30 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster $18 regular, $15 seniors, $5 students – reserved seating On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus, putting into motion a boycott of the bus transportation system and taking a stand against racial segregation. By doing so, she changed the course of American history. This gripping one-woman show delves into the story behind the prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement whose legacy lives on today, giving the audience a look into the sentiments of Mrs. Parks’ inciting incident and the events that followed thereafter. The American Negro Playwright Theatre (ANPT), a nonprofit entity based in Nashville, Tenn. is devoted to outreach, education and empowerment through the arts. FEBRUARY 2014 Lancaster Literary Guild and The Ware Center present
Two Roads Converged
Wednesday, February 19 – 7:30 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster $15 general, $10 LLG members & seniors, $5 students (MU students free) Poet Laureate Christine Longenecker and her husband Rick Shoup will perform selected pairings of Robert Frost and Longenecker’s poetry interspersed with songs from “Frostiana” (Frost’s poetry set to music by Randall Thompson and performed by Lancaster’s MiContraFa choral ensemble). A debut of a musical setting on one of Longenecker’s own poems will also be performed. There will be opportunity at the end of the program for requests from the audience.

“Jazz at the ‘Ville” with guest artists from the United States Army Jazz Ambassadors Friday, February 21– 7:30 p.m. Winter Center – Millersville Free and open to the public, tickets required “Jazz at the ‘Ville” showcases two guest artists from the United States Army Jazz Ambassadors. These guests will be featured as soloists with the MU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Band.
Roots & Blues Festival Friday and Saturday, February 21 - 22 Ware Center – Lancaster Lancaster Roots and Blues is an annual Festival of Music at multiple venues in beautiful downtown Lancaster – headquartered at the Ware Center – featuring more than 50 artists from around the world in two days of great music. Duncan was known for introducing a more fluid dance technique, countering the schools of ballet. Belilove has been hailed as the most authentic Duncan dance interpreter.

Uncommon Quartets and Sextets
Christy Banks with guest artists NakedEye Ensemble Friday, February 28 – 7:30 p.m. Winter Center – Millersville $20 general, $10 students, MU students free MU clarinet professor Christy Banks and Lancaster’s NakedEye Ensemble showcase works by American composers who write for eclectic combinations of quartets and sextets. The Messiaen quartet featured in Mackey’s Breakdown Tango is as “classical” as it gets. NakedEye’s electro acoustic musicians revel in vibrant, fantastic and engaging works written within the last 20 years by New York composers Martin Bresnick, Phil Kline, Randall Woolf and Steve Reich (with the 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner Double Sextet); Cambridge, Massachusetts, composer John Mackey, and Lancaster and NakedEye’s resident composer Rusty Banks. Most of these works are making their Lancaster premiere!

His godmother asks a schoolteacher to teach him to die like a man. The teacher, Grant Wiggins, struggling to quit his poor parish school and leave the South, faces both Jefferson and himself as execution day arrives. Ernest J. Gaines’ celebrated novel makes an engrossing, moving and finally devastating play for the stage. This play contains strong language and mature themes. Sponsored by MU Student Senate and the Communication and Theatre Department. A Lesson Before Dying is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., N.Y.

Lititz Anthems of Johannes Herbst
Millersville Choral Ensembles: University Choir, University Chorale and Women’s Chorus Sunday, March 2 – 7:30 p.m. Winter Center – Millersville $10 general, MU students free with ID Early American Moravian composer Johannes Herbst, pastor at the Lititz Congregation from 1791-1811, wrote delightful anthems featuring orchestra, organ and choir. After gathering dust in the archives for more than 200 years, these musically significant works have been newly edited by Dr. Jeffrey Gemmell, and will receive fresh interpretations in world premiere performances by MU choral ensembles. Other early American works, sacred and secular, along with an exciting collection of African-American spirituals and gospel songs will round out the program. Join us and listen to pieces composed in Lancaster County— another display of the County’s rich history.

Jaiman completed her formal studies at the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture – School of Fine Arts in painting. She studied at the School of Design at Alto de Chavon, Dominican Republic, and at the College of Education at the University of Puerto Rico – Cayey Campus. Latino Film: La Camioneta Saturday, March 8 – 2 p.m. $7 general, $5 seniors Every day dozens of decommissioned school buses leave the United States on a southward migration that carries them to Guatemala, where they are repaired, repainted and resurrected as the brightly-colored camionetas that bring the vast majority of Guatemalans to work each day. Since 2006, nearly 1,000 camioneta drivers and fare-collectors have been murdered for either refusing or being unable to pay the extortion money demanded by local Guatemalan gangs. La Camioneta follows one such bus on its transformative journey: a journey between North and South, between life and death, and through an unfolding collection of moments, people, and places that serve to quietly remind us of the interconnected worlds in which we live.

Friday, April 11 – 7:30 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster $10 general, $5 students Using Mexican Sign Language, spoken Spanish (with English captioning along with ASL), this piece of narrative theater by Mexico’s leading inclusive theater company is based upon the actual testimonies of three deaf inhabitants of Mexico City. In a cozy kitchen, three good friends—two of whom are deaf, the other one hearing—spend an evening telling stories about three other deaf friends who are on their way to join them. Their amazing stories—some comical, others shocking, all real—introduce the audience to a fascinating culture virtually unknown to most. The play explores three different ways of dealing with the same challenge—“How can I communicate?” Supported in part by the Association of Performing Arts Presenters MetLife “All-In” grant and the National Endowment for the Arts “Arts Engagement in American Communities” grant.

APRIL 2014 Mark Twain at Large Saturday, April 12 – 7:30 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster $18 regular, $15 seniors, $5 students – reserved seating Mark Twain at Large is a stunning one-man theatrical tour de force that introduces us to the 70-plus-year-old Twain on a stormy night in his Connecticut home. Racing in from thunderous rains, he invites the audience into his study for an intimate conversation filled with stories and anecdotes taken directly from Twain’s writings. Ron Jewell’s performance has been hailed across the country as “personable and touching,” as critics and audience members alike have delighted in his retelling of Twain’s tall tales. Ron Jewell graduated from Belmont University in Nashville and has worked in dinner theater, summer stock and film. He regularly performs in trade and industrial shows both in and out of his Mark Twain persona. In 1994 he opened the new Performing Arts and Conference Center in Bartlett, Tenn., as its director. In 2003 and again in 2004 Jewell was named to Memphis Magazine’s “Top 100 Who’s Who in Memphis” for his work at the arts center.

The Life and Poetry of Seamus Heaney

The 1995 Nobel Laureate in Literature and Roman Catholic native of Northern Ireland died at 74 on August 30, 2013. He was renowned for more than a dozen collections of poetry that evoked the beauty and turmoil that has defined the modern Irish condition. His lines often communicated the wild onrushing joy of being alive and made him one of the most widely read poets in the world. He became the fourth Irishman to win the Nobel in Literature, following Yeats, who received it in 1923; George Bernard Shaw (1925) and Samuel Beckett (1969). In awarding the Nobel, the Swedish Academy cited his “works of lyrical beauty and ethical depth, which exalt everyday miracles and the living past.” Perhaps Heaney said it best, “The poet is on the side of undeceiving the world...poetry tries to help you to be a truer, purer being.”

Sonya Clark March 10 – May 2 Sonya Clark is currently the chair of the Craft/Material Studies Department at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Professor Clark says … ”the everyday ‘thing’ becomes a lens through which we may better see one another.” At the Winter Center Gallery we will be presenting a number of her objects that examine the every day. Her work has been well represented in major museums across the country and she has received grants from many cultural institutions including the Smithsonian and a Rockefeller Residency award. This exhibition is a curatorial collaboration with George Mason University.
The West Collection May 4 – July 26 The West Collection is based in the Philadelphia region, and is committed to young and emerging artists working with challenging subject matter and materials. The collection has been built and maintained by the West family for more than 15 years. The Winter Center Gallery will be presenting a selection of works on paper.

Artist Jason Thompson January 1 – February 27 (opening reception Feb. 3) New work by sculptor Jason Thompson, who joined the Millersville Department of Art & Design in 2013. He has an M.F.A. from Edinboro University and lives and works locally. His work is humorous and generally draws inspiration from everyday situations and events. The materials are generally bronze and/or wood.
