A CHAMPIONSHIP EXPERIENCE!
It was an incredible year for the Black & Gold Club and the athletic department at Millersville University. We are so proud of the amazing accomplishments of our coaches and student-athletes, as well as the fundraising successes of the past year.
Due to your continued generosity, the Black & Gold Club had numerous fundraising accomplishments in 2022-23. Together, we:
• Raised an overall total of $1,216,172 in gifts and commitments.
• Totaled more than 1,300 gifts and generated over $334,000 in support for the Marauders on the annual Millersville University One Day Give. Gifts to athletics accounted for 64% of the total gifts to the University, and athletics also represented 57% of the dollars raised on the One Day Give.
• Created 11 new endowed and annual athletic scholarship funds.
• Allocated more than $1.5 million in athletic scholarships across all sports for 2022-23—the highest scholarship allocation in department history.
• Completed the Imagine the Possible Campaign with $7,677,770 raised for athletics. This is an incredible achievement that will positively impact Marauders of the present and future.
Because of your financial support, our coaches are recruiting, retaining and graduating outstanding young men and women who represent Millersville in the classroom, in competition and in the community. In 2022-23, Millersville Athletics established a new record in academic success with a department-record 202 Marauders earning PSAC Scholar-Athlete status. It is the first time that the department has produced more than 200 PSAC Scholar-Athletes, and the total number of PSAC Scholar-Athletes increased for the eighth consecutive year. Millersville’s total in 2022-23 jumped from 199 to 202, and that total has grown from 106 in 2016. Among its PSAC Scholar-Athletes, Millersville had 50 students produce a 4.0 GPA. All student-athletes in the department combined to produce a 3.20 cumulative GPA.
In addition to our fundraising accomplishments, I’m excited to announce we are making progress on multiple capital project to support our coaches and student-athletes:
• We recently completed a significant infield renovation at Seaber Stadium. This included a complete regrade of the infield and the installation of a new irrigation system that includes sprinklers.
• We received a $425,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development to install lights at Cooper Park. The project will begin this fall and be completed by the start of PSAC competition in spring 2024.
• Pucillo will be upgraded with a new HVAC system. The improvements were made possible through a $2 million grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The project will start in the summer of 2024 and be completed by November 2024.
• We are moving into the design phase for Biemesderfer Stadium. The project includes new locker rooms, athletic training and equipment rooms. The anticipated start date for the project is December 2024, with completion expected by August 1, 2025. We still have some significant fundraising targets to meet, so please consider supporting this project.
As a Black & Gold Club member, I want to thank you for making this all possible. Your contributions change the lives of our student-athletes and allow us to fulfill their dreams of competing for Millersville while earning a college degree. Thank you again. I look forward to your continued support of Millersville Athletics.
Respectfully,
Miles Gallagher ’10, ’12M Director of Athletics, Millersville UniversityMISSION

COULDN’T BE PROUDER OF MY ALMA MATER,’
SAID ANDY.
Standing behind Biemesderfer Stadium and holding the hand of her father, Millersville alum and former football standout Andy Neupauer ’05, 8-year-old Olivia had no idea what she was about to experience. Olivia had spent her childhood battling focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a rare kidney disease. She was on Millersville University’s campus for her Make-A-Wish reveal, which was to be unveiled by Millersville studentathletes at the April 1 Millersville Metrics track and field event.
As Olivia and her family turned the corner and began their climb up the stairs to Chryst Field, they were greeted by a tunnel of 400 cheering and clapping Millersville student-athletes, a sight that brought tears to the eyes of not just family members, but student-athletes as well. Once on the field, student-athletes presented Olivia with gifts that she could use on her upcoming, once-in-a-lifetime trip. In unison, the Marauders shouted, “You are going to Disney World,” making Olivia’s wish a reality. “It was incredible just to see how selfless they were with their time,” said Andy.
Millersville Athletics had earned the opportunity to host the Make-A-Wish reveal after the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised $5,000 for the organization in 2022. Olivia’s big day marked the fifth time that Millersville Athletics has partnered with
Make-A-Wish® for a wish reveal as part of an athletic event on campus.
“Being a part of a wish reveal is a privilege for our department,” said Millersville director of athletics Miles Gallagher. “To see how children like Olivia and the families have persevered through hardships is a great lesson for our studentathletes, and we are thankful that we can play a small part in the fulfillment of a wish. These are truly magical events.”
Olivia’s passions include games, arts, and crafts, so Millersville Athletics partnered with the University’s Interactive Design Club to provide Olivia, her three sisters and brother with special activities prior to the wish reveal. Several Millersville athletes also played games with the children.

TEAM HIGHLIGHTS
BASEBALL
For the second season in a row, Millersville baseball hoisted hardware in the postseason, following the 2022 PSAC Championship with a NCAA Atlantic Regional title in 2023. Playing on their home field of Cooper Park, the Marauders ousted Charleston and West Chester to advance to the Super Regional, and then swept eighth-ranked Seton Hill for the fourth regional championship in program history and the third under head coach Jon Shehan. Their 46-10 record resulted in Millersville’s second-most wins and secondbest winning percentage. The Marauders went 21-3 in the PSAC East for a fourth straight division crown. Bren Taylor became the first player in Millersville history to win the PSAC East Athlete of the Year award twice, and he and Carson Kulina earned All-America honors. Taylor concluded his career with a remarkable .409 batting average. Shortstop Thomas Caufield capped his two-year run with the Marauders tied for the all-time home run record. Jimmy Losh also set the Millersville record for runs scored.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Despite entering the season with four new starters after losing four All-PSAC East honorees, the men’s basketball team nearly won its second straight PSAC East title, finishing just one game out of first place with a 15-7 division record. Coach Casey Stitzel led the team to back-to-back seasons of 18 or more wins for the first time since 2005-2007. Millersville stood at 7-8 in early January, but a buzzerbeating shot by Matt Dade at Gannon sparked the Marauders to nine straight wins and a sweep of eventual PSAC East champ Shippensburg. Dade, a first-year Marauder, led the team in scoring and was named All-PSAC East Second Team, as was senior Justin Nwosu, who scored his 1,000th career point during the season. In 2023-24, Millersville returns four of its top five scorers as well as two-time All-PSAC East point guard Jaden Faulkner, who missed the entire 2022-23 season with a knee injury.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Millersville women’s basketball returned to the postseason,
finishing fourth in the PSAC East standings, going 18-12 overall and 12-10 in the division. Freshman guard Marin Miller earned AllPSAC East honors, as did transfer Taylor Langan. It was an 11-win improvement from the previous season. Miller ranked second on the team in scoring and assists while leading the team in 3-point shooting. She is one of three starters who will return in 2023-24 to play for new head coach Kira Mowen, who stepped into the role on June 6, 2023. Mowen most recently led Division III Knox College to the NCAA Tournament and a conference championship in just her second season.
CROSS COUNTRY
Hit hard by injuries at the wrong time of the season, Millersville finished 13th out of 18 teams at the PSAC Championships. Four of the team’s top eight runners were unable to compete in the event. Morgan Janiuk led the team with a 32nd-place finish. The Marauders fared better at the NCAA Atlantic Regional, taking 14th in a field of 21 teams. Kait Leister and Abbey Sullivan were named USTFCCCA
All-Academic, and the team finished its competitive semester with a 3.49 GPA for team recognition.
FIELD HOCKEY
Millersville made a stirring run at a PSAC Championship, advancing to the title game and taking the eventual national champion, East Stroudsburg, into overtime before falling 3-2. Millersville became just the second team to score two goals and force overtime against the Warriors, and Taylor Geisel’s first career goal—scored with just over two minutes left in regulation—extended the game. Earlier in the game, Kate Strickland set the single-season Millersville scoring record with her 20th goal of the season. She broke a record that had stood since 1994. Millersville finished 16-5 with a 6-3 record against nationally ranked teams, and two of those losses were to ESU. All five of the team’s losses came by one goal, and the Marauders swept NCAA qualifier Shippensburg. Strickland, Georgia Werkiser and Ashlynn Lennon were all named All-America.
FOOTBALL
An 88-yard touchdown pass from Robert Footman Jr. to Mekhi Alexander and 263 rushing yards gave Millersville its first win of the season in week five, but it was a winning formula that would lead Millersville to five wins over the final seven weeks of the season, its most wins since 2006 and its best PSAC East finish since 2000. Over the final seven weeks, a stellar Millersville defense led by All-PSAC East selections Tyler Tate, Isaiah Onuschak and Garrett Cox held opponents to 20 points or fewer six times. The rushing attack, featuring Jaheim Morris, averaged 165 yards per game. During that stretch, Millersville beat Shippensburg for the first time in 22 years and beat Bloomsburg for the first time since 1999. Millersville somehow managed to string together the five wins despite using three different starting quarterbacks.
MEN’S GOLF
A strong close to the regular season returned Millersville to the NCAA Super Regional for the ninth time in 10 years, and the seventh-place finish in a field of 20 teams marked the program’s best-ever finish in the super regional format. In October, the Marauders finished third at the
PSAC Championship behind top-10 finishes from Christopher Knox and Bobby Lugiano. Lugiano was named PING All-Atlantic Region with a team-best 74.5 scoring average, which ranks fourth in program history.
WOMEN’S GOLF
The Millersville women’s golf team won three tournaments, including two in the spring season, and finished as the runner-up four times on a busy schedule. Millersville placed fifth out of 12 teams at the rain-shortened PSAC Championship. Emma Schotsch scored her first career victory at the Lebanon Valley Invitational in October. Schotsch, Charley Kirby, Taylor Heilman and Amanda Wolf combined for 36 top10 finishes. All four golfers are set to return for Scott Vandegrift’s team in 2023-24.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Under first-year head coach Kaitlyn Hafdell, the Marauders posted a 9-8 record despite having to replace its four leading goal scorers from the prior season’s playoff team. Liv Genovese led the team with 48 goals, while Rachel Keeney and Hayden Corcoran both scored 42. Ashlyn Simonetti led the team in points with 59, and her 29 assists tied for the fifth-most all-time. At
season’s end, Taiyana Goldsborough, Genovese, Corcoran and Keeney were all named All-PSAC East.
MEN’S SOCCER
At the end of the regular season, there was no team in the PSAC playing better soccer than the Millersville Marauders, but despite going 10-3-5 and losing just two PSAC matches, the Marauders did not qualify for the PSAC Tournament. Prior to the start of the season, the NCAA did away with overtime, and that ultimately hurt the Marauders, as the four ties against PSAC opponents limited their point totals in the standings. Over the last three weeks, Millersville went 5-0-1, outscoring opponents 13-1. That high level of play came with individual recognition, as six players were named All-PSAC East, including Aaron Maynard, who was voted the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year. Maynard and Spencer Shortt also earned All-Atlantic Region honors, and Maynard was named D2CCA All-America Third Team. Also outstanding students, Maynard received the prestigious PSAC Top 10 Award, and Shortt earned United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America recognition.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
After two NCAA Tournament appearances and a PSAC runner-up finish in the previous three years, the 2022 Marauders experienced a challenging season marked with close losses and six ties. Graduate student Kylie Sullivan and senior Morgan Winchock earned AllPSAC East Second Team honors. Winchock’s 41 career points placed her ninth in the record books.
SOFTBALL
Aleese Angelo led Division II and set a PSAC record for doubles and went on to become just the third Marauder softball player to earn All-America honors. Angelo hit .423 with 11 homers, 26 doubles and 56 RBIs. Gabby D’Ottavio also turned in an outstanding season at the plate, hitting .365 with six home runs, and she was named NFCA All-Atlantic Region at the designated player position. Alex Schaefer also produced one of the top pitching seasons in program history. She ranked in the top three in the PSAC in innings and strikeouts and ranked sixth with 15 wins.
SWIMMING
Millersville women’s swimming made history in 2022-23, earning its best-ever finish and highest point
total at the PSAC Championships.
The Marauders placed seventh with 534 points, topping the previous program record by 137. Millersville had never before finished higher than eighth at the 12-team meet. Jordan Plempel broke the program record in the 400 individual medley, and the 200 medley relay team of Claire Weaver, Leah Eckert, Kristen Maile and Plempel also set a new school record. Plempel finished in the top eight in three events at the championships. The future of the program remains bright, as the Marauders graduated just one senior. Evan Anthony, a Lancaster native who had most recently coached at Villanova, was named the program’s new head coach in June 2023.
MEN’S TENNIS
It was a season of attrition for the Marauders, who battled injuries for the entirety of the 2022-23 campaign. Despite being shorthanded down the stretch, Millersville still finished third in the PSAC standings and reached the PSAC Semifinals for the third season in a row. No. 1 player Dylan Tull had an outstanding season, going 12-7 overall and 5-1 against PSAC opponents. He and Zach Pernia teamed to form one of the best
doubles teams in the conference, as they went a perfect 8-0 in duals and 6-0 against the PSAC. Tull was voted All-PSAC First Team in singles and doubles. Pernia received secondteam recognition in singles, and Shaurya Piplani also earned secondteam recognition, giving Millersville three All-PSAC singles performers for the first time since 2003.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
For the third season in a row, Millersville reached the PSAC Semifinals after posting a 6-1 record against the PSAC East. Hui Jen Soo was voted All-PSAC East First Team in singles and doubles, junior Noelle Htwar was a first-team pick in doubles, and Chloe Abramowitz and Maria Ojeda landed second-team honors in both singles and doubles. Abramowitz went 7-0 against PSAC East foes, and she and Ojeda paired for a 6-0 record in PSAC East play. Sophie Lanius gave Millersville the PSAC East Freshman of the Year for the third season in a row.
TRACK & FIELD
Hannah Woelfling’s brilliant career fittingly finished on top of the podium at the NCAA Division II Championships, as she was crowned national champion in the discus. Woelfling is the third Marauder to
win an individual national title since 2019, and she joined Sunflower Greene as Millersville throwers with a national title. Woelfling not only won the discus, but she also finished as the runner-up in the hammer throw. At the PSAC Outdoor Championships, she won both events and placed second in the shot put, following up an indoor championships with a firstplace finish in the weight throw. Woelfling’s history-making 2022-23 was part of a stellar campaign for the indoor and outdoor teams. At the PSAC Indoor Championships, De’Asia Holloman won the 60-meter hurdles as the team finished sixth. The Marauders then took third place at the PSAC Outdoor Championships, with Woelfling winning the Field Athlete of the Meet award, Darian Hauf winning the pole vault and sophomore Aubrey Sydnor winning the 400-meter dash with a schoolrecord finish. Freshman Shelby Derkosh placed second in the event. Hauf also became the first Marauder pole vaulter to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
VOLLEYBALL
Despite enduring significant roster turnover and playing the season with just two seniors on the roster, the Marauders managed a 16-13
record and five-win improvement from the previous season. It was the fifth time in the last seven seasons that Coach Brian Smith’s team finished over .500. Libero Becca Dalstad earned All-PSAC East Second Team honors and capped her career ranked eighth in career digs. Sophomore setter Emma Ludwig ranked fifth in the PSAC in assists and earned CSC Academic All-District honors with a 4.0 GPA.
WRESTLING
Under first-year head coach Jerry Boland, Millersville produced one of its best seasons as a Division II program, posting its most dual wins since 2001-02 and its best PSAC dual standings finish. The 133-pound Devin Flannery spent a portion of the season as the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the nation in his weight class, and he finished fifth at the NCAA Division II Championships for his second-straight All-America finish. Brandon Connor was also a national qualifier at 165 pounds, and he and Craig Cook (149) were named All-PSAC Third Team. The team also excelled in the classroom, with seven wrestlers earning NWCA Scholar All-America honors.

CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Career Achievement Award is presented to seniors who have excelled at the highest level in competition, making a significant impact for the team.
Hannah Woelfling is among the most decorated student-athletes in the history of the Millersville University track and field team as an NCAA Champion in the discus and national runner-up in the hammer. She is a four-time NCAA Outdoor All-American, a two-time PSAC Indoor Championship Field Athlete of the Meet and the 2022 PSAC Outdoor Championships MVP. She won the MVP award after leading Millersville to its first PSAC Outdoor Championship in 17 years. Woelfling is a five-time PSAC champion and all-time PSAC and championship record holder in the discus and hammer.
CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Spencer Shortt broke the 21-year-old program record for career assists in 2022 and set a new bar with 33. Shortt, a two-time All-PSAC East selection, led the Marauders in assists and points in 2021 and 2022 and also tied for the team lead in goals in 2021. Shortt played in 80 games, with 62 starts, in his career and directly impacted winning, helping the program to three straight PSAC Championships from 2018 to 2021.
In Millersville’s memorable run to the NCAA Quarterfinals, Shortt recorded assists in both the first- and second-round games. Additionally, Shortt is an outstanding student, earning PSAC Scholar-Athlete status four times, and he was named United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American in 2022.
DISTINGUISHED SCHOLARATHLETE
The Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award is presented to the senior student-athlete who has achieved a high cumulative GPA while also excelling in all aspects of being a student-athlete. Winchock posted a 3.76 cumulative GPA as a business major while also starring on the pitch.
Winchock earned All-PSAC East First Team and D2CCA Atlantic Region Second Team honors in 2021 while leading the team in points, goals and game-winning goals. She followed that with an All-PSAC East Second Team honor in 2022, leading the team in minutes played. In 2019, Winchock helped the Marauders to their first-ever NCAA Tournament win, and in 2021, she scored the game-winning goal in the PSAC Semifinals.
COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
The Community Service Award is presented to the student-athlete or team who goes above and beyond in their efforts to serve.
Garrett Lowe is a graduating member of the baseball program who has balanced life as a student-athlete with a role as a volunteer firefighter. Lowe is an active member of York County Station 54 when at home in Stewartstown, Pa., and a member of Blue Rock Fire and Rescue while on campus.
As a volunteer, Lowe is always on call when not in class or at games and has responded to numerous structure fires, public service calls, fire alarms and emergencies such as car accidents and cardiac arrests. Lowe follows in the footsteps of his father, who was a fireman, EMT and paramedic. While serving the community, Lowe has also been a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete.
FACULTY MENTOR AWARD
The 2023 winner of the Faculty Mentor Award is Dr. Julie Lombardi, associate professor of wellness and sport sciences and graduate program coordinator. Dr. Lombardi was referred to as a “great advocate for studentathletes” by Millersville associate athletic director Larry Earnesty. To help studentathletes, Lombardi annually presents to all first-year students about the importance of nutrition and effective ways to eat healthy/ balanced meals to support athletic performance.
She was instrumental in helping change the full-time credit requirements for graduate students on campus, which directly impacts student-athletes and helps them be able to better balance the academic and athletic demands while achieving success. Lombardi has consistently gone above and beyond in the advising process for graduate students to ensure they are on track to earn their degrees while balancing the athletic workload.
The Core Values Award is presented to those who exemplify the core values of the Millersville University athletic department through everyday actions. With the leadership of Josh Hartranft, the interim chief technology officer, Millersville University IT provided outstanding support to the athletic department during its transition from Jefferson Hall to a new home at Lehigh Hall.
Hartranft ensured that all coaches and staff received technology upgrades in their offices while also establishing top-notch film rooms and technology for the Morgan Academic Center. With Millersville IT’s help, Lehigh Hall is a recruiting showcase and a true home for student-athletes to study, meet and watch film.
needed renovation a reality. To close the $1 million gap for phase one, athletics presented opportunities to purchase an individual locker for $1,500. As of July 1, 2023, named locker purchases have generated more than $47,000 for the campaign.
ALUMS MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Lois Morgan’s $1.5 million pledge in 2021 initiated a campaign to renovate Biemesderfer Stadium, but it was just a start. The three-phase plan—with locker rooms and athletic training space as priorities— required an additional $1 million in private donations to get the first phase underway.
Biemesderfer Stadium was built in 1968, and in the 55 years since, not much of its infrastructure has changed. Home to Millersville’s football, field hockey, lacrosse, cross country, and track and field teams and 200 student-athletes, the locker rooms have been outgrown and have deteriorated over the years of use. The athletic training staff has also grown to meet the needs of the student-athletes, necessitating renovation and expansion.
The challenge presented to Millersville Athletics is to generate the necessary funds to make this much-
Jo Rupp ’96 remembers the importance of locker rooms. She won the PSAC Cross Country Athlete of the Year award three times and was an All-American in outdoor track and field as a Marauder. But it was the relationships cultivated with teammates and coaches in those hours spent in the locker room that have endured. That’s one of the reasons why she jumped at the opportunity to give back to her alma mater, purchasing a locker and establishing a scholarship in her name, which will be awarded to a distance or cross country runner over the next four years for a commitment of $1,200 per year.
“Locker rooms today are more than just a place to dump your books after class and change for practice,” said Rupp. “It’s a place to build relationships. Making upgrades that are conducive to building a cohesive culture is important to great performances.”
Rupp had plenty of those incredible performances in Black & Gold and was inducted into the Millersville Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. Her path to success both as a student-athlete and after graduation was
made possible by the scholarships she received and the impact of members of the athletic department.
“I made a promise to myself when I graduated that someday I would give back every dollar I received in scholarship money,” said Rupp. “I would not have achieved the athletic honors I did without Coach (Keith) White pushing me. [Women’s athletics administrators] Marge Trout and Sandy Peters did everything in their power to make women’s athletics a place where every student-athlete would become the best versions of themselves—in the classroom and on the track. But financially, if it weren’t for that scholarship money, there’s a good chance I would not have been able to stay at Millersville. If my donation can give someone else that opportunity to stay when otherwise they might not be able to, I’ll feel good knowing I am in a place where I can pay it forward and maybe give someone the opportunity to go from walk-on to Hall of Fame, too.”
Rupp has remained close to the program since graduation, often returning to campus to compete alongside the current athletes in the fall Alumni Open or help with meets. The rise of the track and field program to annual PSAC contender with athletes winning national championships is a source of pride for the alum, and helping to move forward the Biemesderfer Stadium renovation campaign is her way of ensuring that future student-athletes are provided with the same memorable experiences that she received.

BLACK & GOLD CLUB
More than 450 student-athletes excel both on and off the field. They not only hold competitive GPAs, but are also active in the campus community and their own communities as well. Leadership and success are truly hallmarks of Millersville University student-athletes.
WHY SUPPORT THE BLACK & GOLD CLUB?
It’s simple. Your annual support makes our current athletes’ experience that much better and helps us recruit high-caliber young student-athletes. From providing important scholarships to equipment for our 19 intercollegiate sports, your support provides the necessary resources to keep our athletes on the field, court, track, mat or in the pool. Your support makes a difference.
