We have so much to celebrate as we launch the Fall 2013 visual and performing arts season. We have combined the Ware Center and the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center into one artistic season to deliver the best and most varied experience in the MILLERSVILLE Performing Arts. As you glance through the brochure you will see more than 50 performances by local, regional and national talent—the best in classical music to jazz to dance to theater—both downtown and on campus. Just announced—We are thrilled to have the Van Cliburn Silver Medal winner Beatrice Rana as part of the Melva S. McIlwaine Concert, and the award winning playwright and actor Heather Raffo in her concert performance, Sounds of Desire. Monday, September 23 – 7:30 p.m. Ware Center - Lancaster $10 general, MU students free A documentary through the eyes of funeral director Isaiah Owens, the beauty and grace of African-American funerals are brought to life. Filmed at Owens Funeral Home in New York City’s historic Harlem neighborhood, Homegoings takes an upclose look at the rarely seen world of undertaking in the black community, where funeral rites draw on a rich palette of tradition, history, music and celebration. Combining cinéma vérité with intimate interviews and archival photographs, the film paints a portrait of the dearly departed, their grieving families and a man who sends their loved ones “home.” Daniel Roumain’s acclaimed work as a composer and performer has spanned more than two decades and has been commissioned by venerable artists and institutions worldwide. Proving that he’s “about as omnivorous as a contemporary artist gets” (New York Times), Roumain is perhaps the only composer whose collaborations span the worlds of Philip Glass, Cassandra Wilson, Bill T. John Moeller’s Book Release Party

Dining at the White House – From the President’s Table to Yours

Tuesday, September 24 – 7:30 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster Free, advanced ticket reservations required. Space is extremely limited. This evening is the official kick-off of the publication of Moeller’s book, which provides an insider’s view into the experience of dining at the White House. It includes memorable moments cooking for three First Families; both Bushes and Bill Clinton, plus 100 recipes for one-of-a-kind dishes featuring his trademark use of fresh, seasonal ingredients inspired by Moeller’s classical French training with an American twist. He will do a cooking demonstration, tell a few White House stories as seen from the back of the house and sign his book, hot off the presses.

Joan Blades, A Living Room Conversation

Wednesday, September 25 – 7 p.m. Winter Center – Millersville Free, ticket reservations required In 1987 Blades co-founded a San Francisco based software company Berkeley Systems known for marketing the “After Dark” screensaver and the “You Don’t Know Jack” trivia game. Ten years later, Blades and Wes Boyd, her husband, sold the company for $13.8 million and founded the liberal political group MoveOn.org. She also wrote a book Mediate Your Divorce and co-wrote The Divorce Book. Since May 2005, she has been a contributing blogger at The Huffington Post. Blades and Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner co-authored The Motherhood Manifesto and co-founded the organization MomsRising, dedicated to “bringing millions of people, who all share a common concern about the need to build a more family-friendly America, together as a non-partisan force.”

Lancaster Literary Guild presents

An Evening with Lancaster’s Poet Laureates: Lancaster County’s three poet laureates share their work and their inspirations Wednesday, October 2 – 7:30 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster $15 general, $10 Guild Members, $5 students, free for MU Students

Barbara Buckman Strasko was appointed first poet laureate by the Lancaster Literary Guild in 2008. She is the author of two collections of poetry: Graffiti in Braille (2012) and her chapbook On the Edge of a Delicate Day (2008). Her poem “Bricks and Mortar” was chosen to be engraved in Lancaster’s Penn square. She is the Poet in the Schools for Poetry Paths in Lancaster City. Daina Savage is an award winning freelance writer for numerous regional publications. She has organized and directed spoken word events in Lancaster for nearly two decades, including the annual Seventh Sister’s spoken word festival. Her first collection of poetry will be published in the fall by I. Giraffe Press. She served as Lancaster’s poet laureate 2010-2012. Christine Longenecker is the current poet laureate. She believes poetry is meant to be learned by heart, spoken by mouth and appreciated by ear. Longenecker has been memorizing poetry since high school and she and her husband, Rick Shoup, have been performing Robert Frost poetry throughout Lancaster since 2009. Her own book of poetry, How Trees Must Feel, was published in 2011.

First Friday – Downtown October 4 – 6-8 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster Matt Wheeler is a Lancaster-based acoustic folk singer and guitarist. He recently released his first full-length album, Strings & Wires, which was two years in the making and will be available on-site. Matt was a featured artist in WXPN’s 2013 Exponential Music Festival in Camden, N.J.

The Art of the Orchid Show Friday, October 4 – Sunday, October 6 (Friday 6-8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday 12-4 p.m.) Ware Center – Lancaster Free admission Susquehanna Orchid Society’s The Art of the Orchid Show A huge exhibition of a wide variety of orchids in bloom for anyone who loves flowers. The show will also include orchid-themed artwork and workshops. The show opens Friday, October 4 at 6 p.m.

Sculpture by Jeff George October 4 – October 27 Opening: Friday, October 4 – 6-8 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster Free admission Jeff George is a designer, illustrator, sculptor and art director. For this show, he takes three-dimensional ideas for sculptures and flattens them down to two-dimensional works of art. His highly-finished, detailed work shows parts, pieces and ideas for sculptures he thinks should be built with enough technical thought to include proposed size, construction material and means of assemblage. The end result is incredible finished watercolor and ink paintings. He is also creating a special sculpture to accompany “The Art of the Orchid” Show. This exhibit runs through the month of October. A Film About Levon Helm

Monday, October 7 – 7:30 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster $10 general, $5 Students Mark Lavon “Levon” Helm was an American rock musician and actor who achieved fame as the drummer and frequent lead and backing vocalist for The Band. The portrait of the ailing artist is bittersweet, but when Helm sings or plays, the look on his face is pure joy. Director Jacob Hatley’s intimate documentary finds Levon Helm at home in Woodstock, N.Y., in the midst of creating his first studio album in 25 years. Shot during the course of two-plus years, this highly anticipated film—just released this year—focuses in on the four-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member after his 2007 comeback album, “Dirt Farmer,” brought him back to the spotlight. Levon Helm died April, 2012. Wednesday, October 9 – 7:30 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster $20 general, $15 senior, $5 MU student The Jamaican-born pianist Maria Corley has appeared on radio, television and concert stages in Canada, the United States, Central America, Bermuda and Europe. Corley completed her undergraduate work at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and received both a master’s degree and doctorate of music degree in piano performance from the Juilliard School where she was a pupil of the distinguished Hungarian pianist György Sándor. Corley is joined by Jessica Gondwe, soprano; Naomi Christine Leaphart, mezzo-soprano; Christyan Seay, tenor; and Rashard Allen, baritone. The repertoire will include art songs, spirituals and jazz/gospel by African American composers.

2013 Van Cliburn Classical Piano Silver Medalist, Beatrice Rana

Tuesday, October 22 – 7:30 p.m. Winter Center – Millersville $23 adults, $20 seniors, Free MU students; all reserved seating Born into a family of musicians, Beatrice Rana began musical studies at the age of four and made her concerto debut when she was nine. She has been invited to perform at the Busoni, La Folle Journée, La Roque d’Antherón, Lanaudière, and Radio-France Festivals, and as soloist with the Aarhus Symfoniorkester, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Kuala Lumpur Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Internazionale d’Italia, and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. First prize winner of the 2011 Montreal International Musical Competition, Rana also took first prize at the Muzio Clementi and Bang & Olufsen Piano Competitions. She released her first CD in 2012 of works by Scriabin and Chopin on ATMA Classique. She currently studies at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, having previously graduated from the Nino Rota Conservatory of Music. The prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition takes place every four years. Coming from across the globe, 30 of the world’s finest pianists were chosen to compete in the 2013 Cliburn Competition. Winners from past years include: Alexander Kobrin, Russia (2005), Stanislav Ioudenitch, Uzbekistan and Olga Kern, Russia (2001). This concert is sponsored by the Melva S. McIlwaine Endowment to support engaging master classes and concerts for MU Department of Music students.

Red Rose City Chorus Lancaster Chapter of Sweet Adelines International

Show Business

Sunday, Oct. 27 – 2:00 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster $15 general, $10 students What happens when a group of performers can’t come up with a theme for their annual show? Hilarity, of course—and a mish-mashed musical selection ranging from American anthems and Christmas classics to rock ‘n’ roll and modern country. Red Rose City Chorus is the Lancaster, Pennsylvania chapter of Sweet Adelines, an international singing organization encompassing more than 32,000 women. Choruses are located in the United States along with 14 other nations. Red Rose City Chorus meets weekly in Lititz and can be heard throughout the year, singing for civic and charitable organizations, private groups, churches, community events and fundraisers.

Pepón Osorio, Artist Lecture Wednesday, October 30 – 7:30 p.m. Ware Center - Lancaster Free, ticket reservations required Pepón Osorio, best known for large-scale installations, was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Osorio’s pieces, influenced by his experience as a social worker in the Bronx, usually evolve from an interaction with the community within which he is working. He says, “My principal commitment as an artist is to return art to the community.” Osorio has worked with more than 25 communities across the U.S. and internationally, creating installations based on real life experiences. By presenting work in unconventional places as well as museums, the artist explores the multiple meanings his installations achieve at each specific location. Merging conceptual art and community, his work emphasizes the exhibition space as an intermediary between the social architecture of communities and the mainstream art world. Osorio is a professor at Temple University’s Tyler School of the Arts. His work has appeared in El Museo del Barrio, New York (a retrospective); Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; Whitney Biennial at Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; Sao Paulo Bienal, Sao Paulo, Brazil and storefronts, department stores and homes in many locations throughout the world. He is the recipient of numerous distinctions including the 2001 Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture, the Whitney Biennial, 1993; an Alpert Award in the Arts-Visual Arts, 1999; and a John D. and Catherine T. First Friday - Downtown Lancaster Friday, November 1 - 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Ware Center - Lancaster Free Performance Art: 36 Dramatic Situations (Part 1) In 1921, Georges Polti wrote The Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations, a treatise suggesting that all fictional and dramatic stories are but variations and adaptations of 36 basic plots. Many years later, artist Gail Gray created a series of abstract paintings based on Polti’s 36. And today, a dozen different local performing artists and arts companies, representing a variety of genres (theater, dance, music, spoken word, puppetry, etc.), have each been tasked with creating a 5-minute performance piece based on one of Gray’s paintings. Twelve of these will be explored this year for an incredibly varied and wildly surprising one-hour production that transcends all sorts of boundaries. (Twelve more will be tackled next year in Part 2, and the last twelve the following year in Part 3.) There may be no new plots, but here’s something entirely new: the first time many different Lancaster performing arts institutions, established and emerging, have come together to create a novel and innovative shared entertainment! Rumschpringe 2013 International Short Film Festival Friday & Saturday, November 1 & 2 – Various Times Ware Center – Lancaster Multiple ticketing options available from single tickets to full festival package. Now entering its sixth season and growing bigger every year, Lancaster’s very own International Short Film Festival takes over the Ware Center with multiple screenings of independent movies from around the world. Awards are given in several categories including animation, comedy, drama, horror, home grown and others. The festival kicks off Friday night with a screening of last year’s winners and a preview of entries from this year. Films are shown by categories all day Saturday. Winners, including “Best of Show,” are announced at the closing ceremony Saturday night.

MU All-Campus Musical Organization (ACMO)

Fall Musical Showcase Friday, November 1- 7:30 p.m. Saturday, November 2 – 2 p.m. Winter Center – Millersville $2 for all tickets

The Fall Musical Showcase, directed by student Katerina Bergerstock, features performances of Broadway’s biggest hits including ensemble songs, duets and solos. Proceeds raised from this event go towards a philanthropic organization. Past recipients include American Cancer Society, the It Gets Better Foundation and the LS Foundation.

Thus far in its history, the band has played for over 400 fund raising benefit performances, concerts for community organizations, jazz worship services, funerals and other church-related occasions, and at one time featured Harvey Owen as its lead singer! Tuesday, November 5 – 7:30 p.m. Ware Center – Lancaster $18 general, $15 seniors, $5 MU students, all reserved seating Lucille Lortel Award-winning Heather Raffo is an Iraqi American playwright and actress who is best known for her one-woman play 9 Parts of Desire. The play, which features monologues by nine highly distinctive Iraqi women was described by The New Yorker as “an example of how art can remake the world.” Raffo will perform Sounds of Desire, the concert version of this play, originally commissioned and performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She will be accompanied by acclaimed Middle Eastern instrumentalists and vocalists. This production is part of the University’s One Book/One Campus programming and co-presented by Cultural Affairs Committee and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Art galleries American Qur’an: Works by Sandow Birk September 5 – November 9 Winter Center Art Gallery – Millersville In response to a decade of travel to various Islamic regions of the world and his own research into Islamic religion, American artist Sandow Birk created a large series of codex–like paintings adapting the techniques and stylistic devices of Arabic and Persian painting and albums, blending the past with the present, the East with the West, creating his “American Qur’an.” Presented in the form of illuminated verses and using an English translation of the Qur’an in hand rendered text that is an amalgam of Islamic calligraphy and the letters of urban graffiti that he finds around his Los Angeles neighborhood, Birk illuminates the verses with scenes from contemporary American experiences, both at home and abroad. The project illustrates the entire 114 suras (chapters) of the Qur’an, 40 of which are represented in the exhibition. Birk is recreating the Qur’an in his own hand and illustrating it with everyday scenes as a way to reflect on Islam within the context of American culture and is inviting viewers to do the same. This exhibition was organized by the Andy Warhol Museum and is being toured by Curatorial Assistance Traveling Exhibitions (CATE).

Becky McDonah: Esteemed Objects Opening – December 4 Winter Center Art Gallery – Millersville Becky McDonah, assistant professor of fine art metals and 3D design at Millersville, will present work she has made influenced by her interest in historic reliquaries and the presentation of venerated objects. She explores concepts regarding the importance of position, display and access (or limited access) to what is contained. Her intention is to spark contemplation leading to elevation or endearment of the ordinary. Secular reliquaries are McDonah’s focus the items chosen comment on past and present society, relationships and memories. By placing common objects in elaborate settings, she hopes to provide an emotional and visual appeal that sparks a feeling of recognition, agreement or amusement in the viewer. Her creations strive to heighten awareness of habitual performances, products and surroundings through glorification with an underlying presence of cultural practices and ideals on a global, national, regional or personal level.

Art galleries Etty Yaniv, Drawings October 7 – November 11 Reception/Gallery Talk, Wednesday, October 9 Sykes Gallery, Breidenstine Hall – Millersville Etty Yaniv was born in Tel Aviv, Israel and currently works in Brooklyn. She holds bachelor’s degrees in psychology and English literature from Tel Aviv University. Her degrees in fine arts include a bachelor’s degree from Parsons School of Design and a master’s degree from Purchase College, State University of New York. She is drawing, painting and working with various other mediums such as installation, photography and video. Her work has been printed in publications such as The New York Times, Village Voice, Newsday Magazine and The Nation. She has exhibited in galleries and museums including City without Walls, Aljira, Montclair State Fine Arts Museum, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Dolly Maass Gallery, White Box and Monmouth Museum of Art.

Metals Invitational: Malleable and Migratory November 11 – January 23 Sykes Gallery, Breidenstine Hall – Millersville This exhibition is a collaboration of metal artists who traveled some of the same paths before settling east of the Appalachian Mountians in a relatively small geographical pocket. Hager Surface Lot As you enter the downtown Lancaster city area via Prince Street, the Hager Lot is directly across from the Ware Center (East side) on Prince Street. This is a smaller lot and fills quickly. Cash only.

The Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center 60 West Cottage Avenue, Millersville Directions from Lancaster City: Follow Manor Street/PA-999 West. Turn left on North George Street. Take the third right at the traffic light onto West Cottage Avenue. Proceed approximately two blocks and turn left at the entrance to the Winter Center to drop off visitors. Continue past Prince Street for garage parking. Parking: Visitors are able to park for free in the Winter Center visitor parking spaces on the first level of our secure, covered parking garage at the corner of Cottage and Prince Street in Millersville. There is a well-lit walking path from the garage to the Winter Center. Visitors may be dropped off at the Winter Center front door. Handicap parking is available in the surface parking lot adjacent to the Winter Center. Visitor parking tags are not needed at any time when parking in the visitor parking spaces of Millersvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Prince Street Garage or during events.
