Back in stride again: Maze featuring Frankie Beverly headlines this weekend’s show at the Mann.

WHAT’S HAPPENING — BEFORE IT HAPPENS ... MUSIC

Bounce TV Summer Music Festival In the early days of the ‘70s, the group Raw Soul was—like its singer, Frankie Beverly—born in Philadelphia. They gigged and released a few singles before Beverly ended up leaving Philly to create one of the most iconic catalogues in R&B history. Sure, he was raised and informed by folks like Gamble and Huff (of Philadelphia International Records), but his real idol was Marvin Gaye, and Beverly fled to San Francisco to put down musical roots. Thankfully, it was Gaye himself who was so impressed by Beverly that he went to the label execs he knew and demanded, “Listen to this guy.” They did, and in 1977, after the band underwent a Gaye-suggested name change, Capitol pressed Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly. It went gold. And it featured the damn fine “Happy Feelin’s,” a tune that built Beverly’s career and will surely be on the setlist at Saturday night’s Bounce TV Summer Music Festival. Beverly is to Maze what George Clinton is to Parliament-Funkadelic: The band has seen loads of lineup changes and personnel fluxes, but it’s always been his vision. And what amazing vision it is. For over 30 years, Maze has build one killer collection of funk-R&B hybrid smashes that are as fresh today as they were upon their release: “Joy and Pain,” “Southern Girl,” “We Are One,” “I Wanna Be With You” and “Golden Time of Day,” to name a few. Adding to the legendary nature of this night, Beverly and Maze will be supported by the Isley Brothers. That’s right: The guys who gave us classics like “It’s Your Thing,” “Summer Breeze,” “Footsteps in the Dark” and the super-sexy “Between The Sheets” will open it up tonight with some soulful, old-school flavor. In fact, the two acts together are surely responsible for heaps of grooves that’ve been sampled by hip-hop acts over the last 20 years, a nod to the heavy influence of their flawless attention to hooks, melodies, emotionally-deep delivery and timelessness. / BILL CHENEVERT Sat., Aug. 3, 7pm. $29.75-$150.75. Ursula Rucker

F ILM

Scribe Video Center’s “Street Movies!” Urban Tree Connection hosts the first in this outstanding summer series in West Philly with a combination of short film screenings and live performances, all in the great outdoors. In an effort to bring communities together and proactively address issues of environmentalism and education, Scribe Video Center’s teamed up with UTC, PECO and the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority’s Fund for Art and Civic Engagement (FACE) for a series of Philly-wide free nights of entertainment that pack a serious philanthropic punch. The particular batch of films being shown tonight circle around the theme of the importance of education and the accomplishment of seeing it all the way through—an ever-important topic in a city like ours, with its shriveling pool of educational resources. Emceed by Dyana Williams, beloved poetess extrordinaire Ursula Rucker is set for openingact duties; with her longtime guitar hero and collaborator, Tim Motzer, and a slew of powerful shorts, this’ll be a stellar, family-friendly open-air evening of culture. Rucker’s thoughtprovoking, soulful stanzas will get brains humming before the projection screens light up. You’ll get inspired by Madeleine Bair and Betty Bastidas’ Can’t Hold Me Back, which follows Fernando Parraz Jr.’s journey to being the first in his family to get a diploma in down-andout southwest Detroit. An Emmy-nominated animated short by the Rauch Brothers called Facundo The Great will plaster a smile across your face. And Mai Iskander’s Garbage Dreams will floor you with the story of the nearly 60,000 Zaballeen (Arabic for “garbage people”) on the outskirts of Cairo, who recycle nearly 80 percent of their own waste. / B.C. 7:45pm. Matt Wong Stemming from West Windsor, N.J., Matt Wong—who turns 16 on Aug. 1—is one of those performers who either inspires listeners or makes ‘em all kinds of jealous. Since picking up the guitar at age six, this kid has managed to essentially master the instrument as a performer, composer and teacher. Now the enterprising youngster’s taken that show on the road and is bringing his chops to the discerning Legendary Dobbs audience. In the most teen-guitar-prodigy sort of way, Wong has taken on fingerstyle as his technique du jour. Such way of playing, he says, allows him to simultaneously perform the bass and guitar alone, melody and rhythm parts, while throwing a little percussion in for good measure. “It’s basically, I’m taking all the parts of the band ... and just playing them all together,” he says, describing his style as a jazz, country and blues melting-pot. The junior at West Windsor Plainsboro High School South is also an aspiring producer, and he put out his 2011 LP Fly Me to the Moon all by himself—at the ripe ol’ age of 14. (And what did you do today?) He’s sort of like a one-man band without the goofy tambourine strapped to his foot or bass drum used as a backpack. Wong’s concert repertoire includes both originals and classic tunes you may recognize, including, he says, a host of Beatles songs and “The Entertainer” by Janis Joplin. Sounds appropriate, as you’ll be both awed and entertained. / TESS MUMFORD 8pm. $10. With Grace Bernicker + Hold Your Own. The Legendary Dobbs, 304 South Street. 215.501.7288. dobbsphilly.com

Saturday, August 3 MUSIC

Low Cut Connie Local rockers Low Cut Connie are centered around the musical partnership between Jersey guy Adam Weiner and British-born Dan Finnemore. If all you’ve heard of them is the vaguely unhelpful tag, “indie band” their second (and most recent) LP, last year’s Call Me Sylvia, is a good place to start piecing together just who these guys really are. Its lead single, the fastpaced, beer-soaked rocker, “Boozophilia,” is not only an ode to Philadelphia, but a standout moment on the record, fortified by a music video that features Weiner’s inadvertent Jerry Lee Lewis impersonation before an adoring, shirtless crowd. The pounding, piano-led, groove finds the guys sounding more like Bachman Turner Overdrive on “Takin’ Care of Business” than anything going on today, as they seem to inhabit a specific niche of nuts-and-bolts rock n’ roll. Low Cut Connie may not be changing the world anytime soon, but they’re fun as hell to listen to. So when you see their poster herald “a new boogie for all mankind” behind an illustration of a burning piano, they don’t necessarily mean new per se—rather, more of a return to some genuinely good times. / ANTHONY TRIVELLI

Some may say there are few things in life creepier than puppets. They may. Which, of course, isn’t to say puppets aren’t entertaining in their own sort of way—after all, Saw could not have become a nearly half billion-dollar franchise without the masochists among us looking for a scare. And Sesame Street wouldn’t have worked with literal elephants, giant-sized canaries and diseased garbage-can creatures. Hordes of individuals and arts companies from around the country engaged in and entranced by the art of puppetry will converge on Swarthmore College’s campus in Philly’s ‘burbs for the six-day Puppet Festival (r)Evolution, a first-of-its-kind national festival of American puppeteers. While including dozens of presentations at the school and its surrounding theaters, Puppet Festival (r)Evolution is as much a convention as it is a series of delightfully imaginative shows, talks on puppetry with its masters—including Joseph Jonah Therrien and the People’s Puppets of Occupy Wall Street, along with Avenue Q’s Rick Lyon and the Lyon Puppets—and some choice puppet films. For actual puppeteers, there are special events, including the National Puppet Slam, hosted by Beau Brown; dozens of handson workshops and an awards ceremony celebrating the best and brightest innovators in puppet design, direction and performance. In other words, there’ll be lots and lots of puppets. Everywhere. And even the ones that are borderline scary will also be undoubtedly cool. It’s OK to be interested. / T.M. Through Sat., Aug. 10. Contextualizing Jazz in Philadelphia: An Evening of Documentaries Head over to International House for a documentary double-header featuring two jazz greats: John Coltrane and Sun Ra, innovators who both spent their evolutionary years in Philadelphia and shaped the landscape of jazz music. Perhaps the coolest saxophonist in jazz history, “Trane” Coltrane moved to Philly at age 16 to study music theory, residing in Brewerytown from 1952 to 1958. The North Carolina native also honed his complex sound in northwest Philadelphia, working with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. The short film Coltrane’s Philadelphia will premier this John Coltrane evening, featuring interviews with artists who worked with the master of the blue note during his time here, alongside historic footage of the city that helped inspire his incomparable music. In the late ‘60s, Sun Ra relocated his eclectic, afro-futuristic Arkestra from New York to Germantown, where the band spent the majority of their years together. It was on Morton Street that Sun Ra and the Arkestra perfected their avant-garde free form sound, gained worldwide publicity and based their operations for West Coast and European tours. Robert Mugge’s 1980 documentary Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise includes interviews and rehearsal footage of the Arkestra, as well as a performance on the roof of the International House itself. Following the screenings, former Philadelphia Inquirer music critic Tom Moon will lead a Q&A session with members of the Coltrane’s Philadelphia production team. / DREW O’MEARA 7pm. Free. BlackStar Keeps Shining Temple alum Maori Karmael Holmes continues making strides with her sophomore BlackStar Film Festival, celebrating independent black cinema in our city. by Karu F. Daniels • photography by J.R. Blackwell • feedback@philadelphiaweekly.com

M

AORI KARMAEL HOLMES is a woman on a mission. By day, she’s associate director of the nonprofit Leeway Foundation; by night, an adjunct professor at the University of the Arts. In between? She’s an up-andcoming filmmaker with a fiercely independent spirit—and the founder and artistic director of the BlackStar Film Festival, Philly’s summertime summit celebrating indepen-

dent black cinema. Nicknamed the “Black Sundance’” by Ebony magazine, the four-day event, kicking off its second year on Thurs., Aug. 1, is quickly becoming a hotbed of black filmmaking talent in and beyond the City of Brotherly Love. With the help of an 18-member, all-volunteer staff, the BlackStar Film Festival will present features, narratives, documentaries, music videos, shorts and experimental films—a total of 75, whittled down from a pool of 300.

Holmes and her team pored over countless hours of film submitted from around the world, with a specific focus on finding indie movies by and about black people. “I think a lot of the festivals include independent work, but they also have a lot of mainstream work,” Holmes tells PW. “We’re definitely focused on independent black films.” Last year, BlackStar’s inaugural lineup featured two world premieres, including Byron Hurt’s critically acclaimed Soul Food Junkies,

an exploration of African-Americans’ love of the addictive, artery-clogging cuisine. Hurt’s eye-opening documentary went on to air on PBS stations around the country and is now available on DVD. This year, films made in locations as far away as Guadeloupe and Senegal will be screened. Rising Kenyan artist Wangechi Mutu’s animated short film The End of Eating Everything, featuring Philly-born singer Santigold, is set to make its festival premiere. The

Roots’ Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter co-stars in another BlackStar feature, 2011’s Yelling to the Sky, alongside Zoe Kravitz and Gabourey Sidibe. The festival runs through Sun., Aug. 4 at various venues around the city—most notably International House (3701 Chestnut Street), Drexel University (33rd and Chestnut streets) and the Barnes Foundation (2025 Benjamin Franklin Parkway). And while it’s far from the only film fest in town—most visibly, last month’s Philadelphia International Film Festival has been running since the 1970s— the city has welcomed this latest addition to the scene with open arms. “There is a renaissance happening right now,” says Nicole Giles, the Greater Philadelphia Film Office’s marketing and multicultural affairs director. “The talented pool of African-American filmmakers in the region is riveting. The BlackStar Film Festival not only provides a platform to showcase work by local filmmakers ... this is also an international festival, illuminating stories told from the black perspective from every continent. It is a refreshing and necessary addition to the vast landscape of local film festivals.”

There are lots of annual film fests worldwide—an ever-growing number, in fact— but only a handful have become anything like household names: Robert Redford’s Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah; the Robert De Niro-co-founded Tribeca Film Festival in New York City; the Toronto International Film Festival, and, of course, their French granddaddy, Cannes, founded in 1946. Among all the rest, three major black film festivals stand out: New York’s Urbanworld Film Festival, Miami’s American Black Film Festival (previously known as the Acapulco Film Festival) and Los Angeles’ Hollywood Black Film Festival. And, now, BlackStar. Its founder, Holmes, a transplant from Los Angeles, has indie film cred of her own: She directed the 2005 documentary Scene Not Heard, examining the oft-forgotten contributions of female rappers from Philadelphia, featuring Lady B, Bahamadia and Monie Love. Since then, Holmes has shot a number of music videos and film shorts. But filmmaking wasn’t her first career of choice; she’s worked with numerous arts organizations in town, including jaunts at the Philadelphia Independent Film and Video Association, the Painted Bride Art Center and the Black Lily Film and Music Festival, which she co-founded with the Jazzyfatnastees and ran for four years. Meanwhile, she held down odd jobs at Gap, Banana Republic and J Crew. “I’ve done a lot of different things,” she says. “I’ve worked in theater, and I do graphic

design, costume design and things like that. I ended up studying film and got my MFA at Temple because I was really interested in merging all these things—and film felt like a really dynamic medium to incorporate digital art, history and journalism and taking all of these things I loved and putting them in one medium.” The idea for BlackStar, named after historical political leader Marcus Garvey’s infamous, ill-fated shipping line, emerged after Holmes noticed that Afrocentric events were booming in Brooklyn—so why not here in Philly, a similar cultural melting pot? “I had thought about doing a continental African celebration ... mostly around fashion, but also around hip-hop and things like that,” she explains. “But when I started looking for films, then I realized it was just going to be about films. “One thing about the audience last year that I was really proud of,” she adds, “is it was really so incredibly diverse and of so many different minds. We didn’t just want the festival to just look like us and just be hipster, black people in their late 20s and early 30s who are running the festival. It was definitely a spread of age, race, neighborhood, discipline and people’s perceptions.” Soul Food Junkies director Byron Hurt says last year’s BlackStar screening of his film as the festival’s closing-night event was momentously important: “It was just great the way the audience responded ... I know for me, it reaffirmed that the film had an audience and that there were people—black people in particular—interested in the topic that my film addresses. I was very happy and honored to be a part of the festival.” Traditionally, for independent filmmakers like Hurt, premiering their movie at festivals offers the chance to showcase the work to potential distributors, so that, if received strongly by the festival audience, the film might get picked up for widespread ciculation on the big screen or television. Over the years, filmmakers such as Jerry Lamothe (Blackout), Lee Daniels (Precious) and Ryan Coogler (Fruitvaile Station) have enjoyed the spoils of success via various festivals. Even Spike Lee—who’ll be taking part in Friday’s “By Any Means Necessary: Producing Independent Film” panel—got his first taste of acclaim at the New Directors, New Films Festival in 1983, where his thesis film, Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads, was the first-ever student film to be showcased.

the many hardships that come with the territory. “The mainstream film festival marketplace is overly saturated,” Kersey suggests. “There are well over 1,000 film festivals [in America]—and more forming daily. But I think there are opportunities in the black film festival marketplace in parts of the country with dense African-American communities. These communities are typically under-served by the mainstream theatrical market, and the audience is ripe to see indie black films. Black film festivals, if managed and produced correctly, are typically well-received. “The biggest pitfall is the lack of financial support from within the entertainment industry, and how they lump all black film festivals together and then divvy up that small pie,” she explains. “When you ask for support, they mention the other black film festival they’ve supported, as if their support of one black film festival represents their support of the genre. It is very unfair. Money is the major problem for black film festival organizers. If we had our fair share, we could produce even more amazing events that we do on limited funds.” Fortunately for Holmes, her BlackStar endeavor, still in its infancy, has received major support from the Knight Foundation and a number of corporate sponsors, including Heineken and the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation. “I don’t know if there’s a handbook or any kind of guide,” she says. “I think each festival is its own organic entity. Some people have huge corporate sponsors, and I think that makes things work in a different way. And some festivals show 10 films, and they just kind of show two a day. They’re all really different. I don’t know if there’s just one way to do it.” Veteran movie critic Wilson Morales, site editor for the popular Blackfilm.com, has seen his fair share of film festivals crop up over the years. BlackStar might be just the kind of shot in the arm Philadelphia’s scene needs, he says: “It’s good for Philly to finally have its own showcase for black talent—even better that it’s a focus on the indie scene.” He’s impressed, too, with the “familiar names” the festival has procured, among them Lee, Trotter, King Britt and Saul Williams. “The thing that works with film festivals, in general, is that a lot of money can be brought in to the city that hosts it, and temporary jobs are offered.” BlackStar isn’t the first or only Philly film festival to highlight the AfricanAmerican experience, but it is quite singular in its “all black, all indie” mission. Philly’s civic leaders have been quick to pick up on BlackStar’s potential cultural significance, and Holmes is more than appreciative of what seems like citywide support for her efforts. Still, she —Tanya Kersey, Hollywood knows the difficulty of staging an event Black Film Festival of this magnitude so close to the major entertainment hub that is New York City. “Our Film Office is really active,” she says, ”and they’re one of our partners in cultivating independent filmmakers, but there is a challenge—I won’t sugar-coat that—because we’re so close to New York, people can just go there.” As Holmes works to market BlackStar, Ebony’s description of it last year as the “Black Sundance” certainly comes in handy; she appreciates the comparison, even as she understands the weighty burden it represents. “To be compared to one of the world’s most important film festivals at such an early stage for our festival feels good,” she admits, “because Sundance represents everything we are striving for: independent filmmakers, high-quality films, collegial atmosphere, networking. It also is a tad intimidating.” Can BlackStar live up to a such a giant operation? Fingers crossed, Holmes thinks so. “I hope that we become a destination festival in that sense—a clearinghouse for films of a certain quality,” she says, “and a ‘must-attend’ stop on the festival circuit for black filmmakers.” n

“I think there are opportunities for black film festivals in parts of the country with dense African-American communities. The audience is ripe to see indie black films.”

Five Must-See Flicks at BlackStar

T

he second annual BlackStar Film Festival sails into town this week with a slate of films and panels offering a unique take on filmmaking across the African diaspora, and founder Maori Holmes has put together an impressive slate of films that will be difficult to find elsewhere. Though some films on the festival circuit wind up on Netflix, on a cable channel or via video-on-demand, many worthy projects by filmmakers of color face enormous challenges connecting to an audience. At BlackStar, audiences can view films the way the filmmakers intended: on the big screen. This year, BSFF dedicates its first day to black men, while other films on its roster include a coming-of-age story in Africa, the tale of an immigrant couple faced with infertility woes and a fanciful look at the last day of a man who has plans to sacrifice himself for his family. Here are five premieres, all at International House, that are not to be missed during the four-day fest. Question Bridge (USA, 2012): This unique documentary asks one group of black men to pose questions to another black man they are estranged from. Once that happens, a different black man answers the question, giving the film an innovative way to forge connections between brothers from varying life experiences. Two of the film’s makers, Hank Willis Thomas and Bayete Ross Smith, will be in attendance for the screening. Thurs., Aug 1, 6pm. Tey (Alain Gomis, France and Senegal, 2012): Poet/actor Saul Williams plays a man in the last hours of his life in a film Holmes describes as fanciful and mysterious but visually arresting. “It’s kind of like a fantastic journey, and Saul Williams is in every frame,” Holmes says. “He’s chosen to sacrifice himself for his family, but you don’t really know why. It really feels like an art film, in an art sense.” Fri., Aug. 2, 8:30pm. With Merkato. Nairobi Half Life (David Tosh Gitonga, Germany and Kenya, 2012): This coming-of-age story set in Nairobi, Kenya features a young man who yearns to leave his village for the big city to pursue an acting career, an unlikely choice in his native country. “It’s an upbeat, energetic film, and it’s nice to have an African person who made an African film,” says Holmes. “The main character has agency. And he’s finding his way,” Sat., Aug. 3, 7pm.

Mother of George

Things Never Said (Charles Murray, USA, 2012): This story of a spoken-word artist who finds new confidence through her art is not a particularly unique one, but the film’s lead actress, Shanola Hampton of Showtime’s Shameless, is a brown-skinned woman with locs, a look rarely seen in mainstream cinema. “This is the most “Hollywood–ish” of the films that we have,” according to Holmes. “It’s well done in the vein of the stuff that writer/director Ava DuVernay is doing.” Sat., Aug. 3, 9pm. With The Bluest Note. Mother of George (Andrew Dosunmu, USA, 2013): Director of Photography Bradford Young, a graduate of Howard University whose film program will be honored at Black Star, won a cinematography prize at the Sundance Film Festival for this movie about a Nigerian couple living in Brooklyn who finds they are unable to conceive. “It’s an immigrant story,” Holmes notes, “that’s not tragic.” Sun., Aug. 4, 6:15pm. With Boneshaker. (Tonya Pendleton)

here’s a lot to be said for throwbacks, for looking into our collective or personal past for inspiration, or nostalgia, or humor. It may not have won the Palme d’Or in Cannes, but Hot Tub Time Machine cracks me up every time I see it. And the occasional surprise airing of, say, “Girl You Know It’s True” on the radio makes me smile, despite the fact that it’s really a terrible song. But nostalgia only works, in general, if it’s engaged in knowingly, with a sense of whimsy and a gentle tweaking of the details that always made the thing so charming or enjoyable in the first place. I desperately wanted to love eating at Lucha Cartel for its nostalgic reliance on the classic Mexican flavors so many of us grew up on; while the vibe is spot on, the food never quite arrived at that point for me. Located at an address that’s turned over a fair bit over the years—it was Philadelphia Fish & Co. before it was Q before it was Lucha—the physical space has always been appealing. The wooden patio, with plenty of outdoor seating and abundant tourist foot traffic to watch as it jiggles by in its jeans shorts and fanny packs and Rocky T-shirts, remains just as lovely as ever, and the inside has been cleverly redecorated in a Mexican wrestling-mask motif, replete with a triptych in the men’s room of Darth Vader’s own mask variously rendered au naturel and luchador-style. It’s exactly the sort of attention to detail I’d expected. This is the team, after all, that keeps National Mechanics revving along, a beloved mainstay in the neighborhood that I’ve always enjoyed. Which is why I was surprised that the food didn’t come alive in the same way; in fact, too many dishes at Lucha simply didn’t elicit much reaction from me at all. The guacamole is made fresh to order, and smooth as a wrestler’s shorn chest, but it screams out for more acid; with each bite, my craving for a more assertive squirt of lime juice grew more passionate. As it was, scoop after scoop of guac became little more than a study in creamy textures. A bit of pico de gallo helped this problem along— though nothing could redeem my disconcertingly stale nachos themselves. Now, to be fair, they’re made in-house, too, so I’m hoping this is a problem that will dissipate once the summer heat breaks. This time of year, when the ambient humidity wreaks havoc with items like these, monitoring chip texture is crucial; even at home, when my bag of store-bought triangles gets too stale, I make sure to give them a quick re-fry before serving guests.

Texture wasn’t an issue with the crispy fish tacos: Each thumbnailsized piece was perfectly fried and crunchy with beer batter. Their pleasantly nutty flavor came accompanied by inoffensively standard trimmings: iceberg, tomatoes, a smear of sour cream, and a dollop of well-crafted raw salsa verde. The chorizo burger was better—traditional and jalapeno-spiked sausages blended with ground beef into a flavorful 9-ounce patty, topped by a crown of fried queso tropical. With a little less avocado and a roll a bit less bready than this particular Sarcone’s bun, this is a sandwich that has real potential. The real bright spot at Lucha, it seemed, was with pork. A happy hour carnitas taco was anchored by pork confit swirling with life from its overnight orange-juice marinade. Each bite left the faintest aroma on the tongue, the result of smart additions of cinnamon, cumin, clove, and Mexican Coca-Cola. Cochinita pibil—though it, too, might have benefited from a bit of acid—was nonetheless well conceived and executed, each bite ringing with the pleasant tang of guajillo peppers, a whiff of achiote and orange juice. As for the drinks: The happy hour specials are great deals—a $5 mojito was a pleasant, thirst-quenching way to slide into evening— while the house margarita was made without triple sec or Cointreau, which would be fine if there were enough lime juice, which there wasn’t. Fortunately, the beer selection is thoughtfully conceived, and there is very little in this world that swallow after swallow of Modelo or Tecate can’t cure. Right now, Lucha Cartel is long on atmosphere, innocuous and forgettable on the menu. Except for those pork dishes—it should all be that exciting. There’s such an abundance of great, relatively inexpensive Mexican food in this city that I hope this team hits their groove sooner rather than later. 

to take a chance or push themselves in directions they never thought they’d be able to go. And that’s part of the whole purpose of Phreak ‘N Queer: It serves to create spaces where queers can congregate, form an audience and take in queer performance, but also to help performers come out of their shells, experiment with audiences and jump forward as artists. “Try new things, experiment, go out on a limb— because we’ve got an audience that will support you in taking those risks,” says Gormley. “At least that’s what we’re trying to do. We tell folks from the jump, ‘Here’s what we’re about—we have to be a little more careful at all-ages shows, and we don’t censor people. Know your audience.’ But for the adult shows, we really encourage folks to try new things and push the boundary a little. If there’s always something you’ve wanted to do, go for it. Why not try it?” Why not, indeed. Hopefully this philosophy will yield some truly breakthrough and jaw-dropping moments of creative expression at Phreak N Queer from a whole range of folks, both queer and queer-friendly. 

or a queer person, the chance to attend a queer performance is sometimes as exciting as it is nerve-wracking, even when you’re not the one in the spotlight. You just want to see it done right. And sometimes, in those rare moments when you catch an artist’s expression, and it’s inspiring or blows your mind, you get lit up. Your mind finds new ways of working; your perspective is inexorably changed. But then there’s the flip side. From time to time, it’s even your friends. They’re so eager and excited to perform; then they get the mic, and you’re frozen in place. Oh, this isn’t good, you think. Boy, I wish this was a lot better. Could be lack of rehearsal, an awkward stage presence or just an altogether bomb on execution or delivery. Next weekend, over the course of four days and nights, Kate Gormley and seven other volunteers have packed in about as many of these opportunities one can possibly imagine at the third annual Phreak N Queer Arts and Music Festival. Gormley and her team have so much in store that there are sure to be standouts in both categories: moments where stars are born, and crashes where artists will be pulled back up and encouraged by fellow queers to go back to their craft with new determination. The mix of programming they’ve put together is really quite a feat. And this year, more so than in the previous two years, the PNQ team wanted queers young and old to be able to attend, adding in more all-ages opportunities and scaling down ticket prices (plus a few “no one will be turned away” events). But what made Kate and Co. want to throw the first festival a few years ago, PW asked? “We wanted a little bit more out of the Philly scene,” Gormley explains. “Things were getting very pop-y and mainstream, and we wanted to go back to some of our roots of hearing very exciting and interesting young artists. A lot of us remember the days of West Philly basement parties, where you’d hear someone’s mixtape or EP and not Ke$ha on the dance floor.” There’s no question that there’s not so much as a clash as a disparity between pop and punk gay cultures. They don’t really coexist. To that end, queer punks could understandably feel like their pop queer counterparts not only dominate everything in American culture’s perception of queerness, but even go so far as to quell the wealth of opportunities in the city of Philadelphia to catch things like queer poetry readings, genderqueer art walks, lo-fi bizarro queer rock shows and trans-friendly dance parties. “We wanted to push the envelope of what was happening or what could happen in queer culture in Philly,” Gormley continues, “so a bunch of us got together and said, ‘What the hell.’ We sold out shows and saw a bunch of people you don’t typically see on the rounds. So, we just kept it going, and this is our third year now.” She elaborated, too, on what kinds of performances she hopes will transpire within spaces that nourish, encourage and support artists looking

Wolverine

So Close and Yet So Far Marred by a wack ending, The Wolverine was almost a real movie.

F

ew movies shit the bed as spectacularly in their third acts as The Wolverine, a second attempt to give Hugh Jackman’s knuckle-knived berserker Logan a standalone franchise apart from his mutant pals in the X-Men pictures. The previous effort, 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, was a debacle on all fronts, notoriously employing a deus ex machina of “amnesia bullets,” which sounded like sweet relief to anybody who actually sat through the fool thing. The title of this entry feels like a sheepish admission on the part of the producers: Ignore that last one—this is the Wolverine movie. And, for a while, it is. Tormented after having to kill his dreamgirl-gone-bad Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) at the end of 2006’s awful X-Men: The Last Stand, Jackman’s exhausted immortal has retreated inside a whiskey bottle somewhere in the Canadian wilderness. He’s unearthed by Yukio (Rila Fukushima), a cherry-haired psychic with a sword who’s employed by one very, very old friend of Logan’s. Yashida (Haruhiko Yamanouchi) is a captain of Tokyo industry on a nifty futuristic deathbed. Seeking to square a life-debt that’s been outstanding since Nagasaki, he offers our hero the gift of mortality. Of course, things don’t go according to plan, and soon Logan’s on the run with Yashida’s granddaughter, Mariko (Tao Okamoto), heiress to billions and thus marked for death by the Yakuza, various ninjas and a few rotten relatives. What makes The Wolverine so refreshing for so long is its smallness of scale; there’s no apocalyptic CGI grandeur—just a lot of close-quartered fights full of sharp, pointy objects. Journeyman director James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma) hews to clean compositions, clearly defined action geography and striking use of the Japanese locations. It’s tightly focused, even intimate by comic book standards. Haunted by dreams in which Janssen beckons him to join her in the great beyond, Jackman’s suffering a mysterious cramp in his superhuman healing abilities. Suddenly, Logan is vulnerable, in more ways than one. Mangold keeps the tone somber and muted. The Wolverine is admirably lean and character-driven—until all of the sudden, it isn’t anymore. Tossing aside everything that had made the picture distinctive, the film’s final segment retreats to a generic industrial space for a block-headed cacophony of preposterous plot twists and weightless computer generated destruction, complete with the now-obligatory mid-credits teaser for the next installment. Such a shame, as this was almost a real movie. (Sean Burns)

To be real: In this scene from The Art of Killing, makeup artists apply fake blood and wounds to actual perpetrators (and some victims) of the mid-’60s genocide in Indonesia for a re-enactment of the gruesome massacres.

Indonesian war criminals come to grips with their butchery in Joshua Oppenheimer’s chilling The Act of Killing. By Sean Burns // sburns@philadelphiaweekly.com

Y

ou have never seen a documentary like director Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act of Killing, and you’ll probably never want to again. An unblinking gaze into the banality of evil, this is a warped phantasmagoria of denial and delusion that’s essential viewing, even if, at times, it’s almost impossible to watch. When it was over, I had to go walk around for a couple of hours to shake off what I had seen. My notebook contained just three words: “There be monsters.” In 1965, the Indonesian government was overthrown by the military, who then hired paramilitary groups and gangsters to execute more than one million so-called “communists” in less than a year’s time. Divorced from any ideology, the term “communist” applied to anybody who dared to disagree with the new regime or just those unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. These war criminals are still celebrity figures in their homeland, and in 2004, when Oppenheimer was in Indonesia working on his previous project, The Globalization Tapes, he found them cheerfully bragging about their many massacres. The most sickeningly bloodthirsty of the bunch, Anwar Congo and his porcine sidekick Herman Koto, turned out to be avid cinema buffs. Nicknamed “the movie theater gangsters,” they fashioned themselves after Hollywood stars of the era, and even claim to have adopted certain killing techniques from their favorite films. In a twisted stroke of genius, Oppenheimer eventually offered Congo and company a chance to recreate the slaughters of 1965 and 1966 as a movie of their own making. The Act of Killing is a jumbled-up head-trip of shockingly blunt interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of the group’s boastful re-enactments. It plays like a nightmare parody of entertainment journalism—where all the creative talent are also mass murderers. Now a senior citizen, Congo is a slightly built fellow who bears a darkly ironic resemblance to Nelson Mandela. The dissonance is jarring, watching him casually explain how beating people to death got too messy and tiring, so he devised a more efficient, much cleaner method of strangling them with wire. He happily demonstrates, taking care to point out that he never would have worn white pants while doing this for real because they stain too easily. We’re told time and again that the Indonesian word for gangster comes from “free man,” and these barbarians are celebrated as folk heroes for their swagger. The most jaw-dropping sequence in a film that has no shortage of them finds the cast promoting their production on an inane talk show.

The perky hostess chirps vapid praise for their “extermination of the communists” as a studio audience applauds. There’s less enthusiastic participation from former cohort Adi Zulkadry, who arrives back in town wearing a T-shirt that says “Apathetic” and doesn’t answer when Congo asks why he never returns phone calls anymore. Zulkadry has a less romantic view of their old crusade, openly acknowledging that they tortured and butchered countless people who probably didn’t deserve to die—but it was war, and it’s over, and that’s that. Oppenheimer grills him a bit about the Geneva Convention, only to be dismissed with the words: “War crimes are determined by the winners. Guantanamo was legal when Bush was in power.” Zulkadry doesn’t hang around for much of the movie shoot, last glimpsed shopping at an upscale mall with his family, untroubled and at peace. Congo, on the other hand, has a tough time sleeping these days. Now fancying himself an impresario, he starts adding surreal musical numbers and nightmare sequences to the script. For some unknown reason, a lot of these scenes feature Koto dressed in drag like a malevolent Divine. One time, he’s playing a pregnant murder victim; another, he’s a cannibal ghost eating Congo’s liver. Their project began as a glamorous old-fashioned gangster movie, but it’s quickly turning into a psychological meltdown. While the foulest of these figures still lounges around blithely reminiscing about how much he loved to rape 14-year-olds, the process of reliving it all for the cameras is stirring something buried for decades inside of Congo. The Act of Killing’s title begins to cut both ways, until Congo’s taking a turn as a torture victim shatters whatever emotional distance he’d always placed between himself and his prey. There’s a poetic justice here that no doubt attracted executive producers Werner Herzog and Errol Morris to stump for the film: a murderous movie buff undone by the power of cinema. Watching his actions onscreen guts Anwar Congo in ways that words never could. The production finishes with the old man screening his footage and retching uncontrollably, countless atrocities finally come home to roost. 

t’s strange to envision Katie Crutchfield—aka Waxahatchee—playing to a large crowd. Her music is so deeply personal, so sweetly intimate, that hearing her plead, “Won’t you just let me pretend this is the love I need?” feels like a secret that shouldn’t leave the pages of a journal entry, let alone the confines of a tightly packed basement show. Yet despite the wishes of every Pitchfork-reading indie music lover, Waxahatchee’s reputation is growing, as NAME: joe diamonds PW evidenced by her show atAD Morgan’s Pier, where she will open SIZE: 1.6v for punk rock patriarchs Ted DATE: Leo and the Pharmacists. Still, 3.2.05 despite the popularity surge and increased Philippealbum sales these INITIALS: Revbring #1: to a budding musician’s larger shows can undoubtedly Rev not #2: all that excited to play— career, Crutchfield admits she’s LAST REVISION anywhere. As the confessional nature of her lyrics might imU BETTA STOP ply, she’s completely, unconditionally honest. “It’s sort of awkward for me to play in front of people,” she WEEKLY ❏ REV ❏ SWR ❏ says. “I don’t have stage fright really; it’s just that I don’t feel like I was born to be onstage. I likeshannon writing songs and making SalesRep: records, and [being onstage is] part of what I have to do in Salesman: final approval order to do that. I guess I could neverinitial playforshows, and that would be fine—but it’s part of the whole package.” That she should dislike performing live is a bit surprising because Crutchfield, though just 24, is no spring chicken in the music world. Growing up in Birmingham, Ala., she and her twin sister, Allison, who now fronts the punk band Swearin’, began playing in bands when they were 14. “As soon as I got into underground music, it was immediately punk, especially riot grrrl punk, like Bikini Kill,” says Crutchfield. “And then I started to get into R.E.M. and the more classic indie rock bands, like the Pixies. I think that kind of music really shaped me.” After playing in a few bands in the Birmingham area— most notably the blogosphere-adored P.S. Eliot—the sisters decided to move east, first to New York City and then to Philadelphia. “The scene of Birmingham was sort of male-domi-

nated. And we were really active in the punk scene at large, and it sort of felt like we didn’t fit in with our local punk scene. But we knew that there were local scenes in the country that we could fit into better,” Crutchfield says, quickly adding that Birmingham has “gotten a lot cooler” and “less bro-y than it used to be.” Despite moving on to their own respective ventures, Katie and Allison are as close as ever. They now live together in West Philly, a prime location for any up-and-coming artist. “It’s ideal for a musician that tours, that isn’t like fucking Green Day or something,” she says. “It’s affordable. You can live in a house with a basement where you can practice, and there’s a lot of great bands all over the city.” Financial worries aside, she’s not exactly slumming it with the critics. Her first album, 2012’s American Weekend, is a triumphantly bare-bones achievement; it’s just her voice and her acoustic guitar, with a four-track recorder. This year’s follow-up, Cerulean Salt, retains the same lyrical earnestness that made her debut so appealing, while bringing in a full band to add a newfound urgency to her sound. Cerulean Salt has earned rave reviews, including a coveted “Best New Music” distinction on Pitchfork. The wordsmanship, in particular, has been the subject of much praise; Crutchfield seems bruised and battered and beautiful—and you’ll love her for it. While it may be a stretch to say that Waxahatchee will ever reach Green Day-level fame, Crutchfield better get used to playing at places like Morgan’s Pier, since it looks like her star is only rising. “Up until six months ago, the only people that really heard my record were my friends,” she admits, reflecting on the surreal nature of performing for throngs of fans. “[Fame]’s something I might have to navigate in the future.”  Wed., July 31, 9pm. Moment of truth: This incessantly nutty sendup of all the high-tech police procedurals (and their spinoffs) CBS airs has returned for a third season, with Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan joining the crew as a hippy-dippy gadget girl. Unfortunately, things get a bit wobbly this season. Last week’s premiere, which mocked both Con-Air and Comic-Con, had me in hysterics. But an upcoming ep, which uses guest star Ed Helms in cruel and unfunny ways, may be its worst episode yet. Let’s hope creator/star Paul Scheer (The League) uses his hairpiece-covered noggin to come up with more funny. Emmy or phlegmmy: Phl-emmy. (C.D.L.)

The show’s really nothing spectacular—just Oliver playing MC to a slew of up-and-coming comics and seasoned vets. Thankfully, many of the comics (Reggie Watts, W. Kamau Bell, Pete Holmes, Paul F. SAVAGE LOVE By Dan Savage // mail@savagelove.net I am a 28-year-old gay man. I recently connected with a guy on a vanilla dating website. Our first conversation was through text messages for the better part of six hours. The next night, we talked over the phone for an hour. And the third night was our first date. In that first text conversation, he stated that he is into “everything from mild to wild.” The comment came without solicitation from me, during a conversation that he initiated about sexual preferences. This was a major turnon for me, increasing my interest in him. I am very familiar with one kink: diapers. It’s a huge part of my sexual identity, and I ideally want it to be part of a sex life with my partner. Normally I would wait until months into a new relationship to bring up the topic, but since he opened the door, should I talk about it now? Since this has the potential to be more than just a hookup, what’s the best way to proceed? Nervously Anticipating Padded Pants In Erotic Situations

I’ve long advised kinksters who are dating vanillas— or presumed vanillas (PVs), I should say, as it’s not uncommon for a presumed-to-be-vanilla partner to reveal kinks of their own after a partner discloses their kinks—to wait until the PV has gotten to know them before disclosing. (Ironically, of course, every kinkster is a PV until the moment of disclosure.) Since so many true vanillas have a knee-jerk, negative reaction to kinks, it’s only fair that kinksters have a chance to let a new partner get to know them before opening up. That way, a vanilla can weigh any prejudices they might have about kinky people (they’re dangerous and depraved, not BF or GF material) against what they’ve come to know (and like) about the kinkster they’ve been dating. Sometimes it works out (the vanilla comes to enjoy the kink because it gives someone they care about pleasure, the vanilla grows to enjoy the kink themselves, the vanilla gives the kinkster a pass to enjoy their kink with others), and sometimes it doesn’t work out (the kink is a deal-breaking libido-killer, and the kinkster winds up dumped). But your case is different, NAPPIES, as the gentleman you’re courting has already disclosed his kinks. According to my treasured and frequently consulted copy of Emily Post’s Etiquette, the proper response to a disclosure of kinks by a suitor is the prompt disclosure of one’s own kinks. Now, very few people who say they’re into “everything” are actually into every single thing. A Google search for “toaster fetish” pulls up 260,000 results. They’re not all pages created by sexual fetishists— some are pages created by kitchen-appliance aficionados—but some are sites created by actual toaster pervs. And just as your new boyfriend probably wasn’t thinking “even toasters!” when he said “everything,” NAPPIES, he probably wasn’t thinking “even diapers!” Because while diapers are a huge turn-on for you and other diaper fetishists, they’re not something that leaps to mind when even a kinky person says “from mild to wild.” And this presents you with a problem. As Emily Post put it: “A sexual fetish for an item of attire so strongly associated with childhood (indeed, with the nursery itself!) will give pause to even the most depraved of suitors.” As such, NAPPIES, you may be within your rights to drop hints about your diaper fetish instead of flat-out disclosing it. Ask him if he really meant everything and see what he says. If he says, “Yes, everything,” then spill—or leak—your kink.

But if he hedges his bets, NAPPIES, let him get to know you a bit better, and explore some of his kinks before disclosing your own. I’m a sexually inactive (by my own choice) heterosexual female in my late 40s who up until recently used to be much heavier and in rapidly declining health. Since my type 2 diabetes diagnosis, I have achieved substantial weight loss, a much-improved diet and a little Clairol Nice ’n’ Easy. I now look and feel infinitely better than I ever did in my late 20s. People in my apartment building have been doing double takes. While I admit the newly acquired positive attention is fun, I’m happy staying single and am not interested in developing any LTRs with the opposite sex. The weird thing is, the majority of guys doing any flirting with me seem to be much younger than I am. A wise, older female friend of mine once commented that men “don’t know what to make” of someone like me. OK, I think. So am I too narcissistic? I can’t seem to relate or really keep conversations going. Plenty of younger men in their 20s and 30s are nice looking, but I’ll be 50 next summer! I’m Not A Cougar Though I’m Very Energized “The first thing I’d like to say to INACTIVE is congratulations on tackling her type 2 diabetes with such determination and getting such fabulous results!” says Cindy Gallop, a former high-flying advertising executive who is now the founder and driving force behind MakeLoveNotPorn.com, a website and movement designed to blow up pornography. Gallop is a fan of younger men, INACTIVE, and younger men are fans of Gallop. “Of course she’s getting so much flirtatious attention from younger guys!” says Gallop. “There are many young men out there interested in and attracted to older women—but society considers that relationship model less socially acceptable than the older-man/younger-woman version, which is why she’s so surprised. Well, the good news is she can stay single, not embark on any LTRs with the opposite sex and still have a lot of fun with younger men, without worrying about keeping conversations going—because the fun doesn’t need to involve much talking.” If “sexually inactive by choice” was a choice you made back in your heavier, unhealthier days due to a lack of confidence, Gallop says that this is the perfect time for you to get back in the game—and younger men are the perfect playmates. “INACTIVE is in her sexual prime, and she should go for it!” says Gallop. “The age issue is purely a societal judgment and is irrelevant. Younger man (lots of stamina, very short recovery period) + older woman (confidence, experience, knows what she wants) is a fantastic combination. And I speak as someone who knows.” A couple of pro tips from Gallop for older women who are dating younger men: “Number one: Apply the same filter to her dates that I do—regardless of how casual the relationship, he needs to be a very nice person. Number two: If she hasn’t been sexually active for a while, check out MakeLoveNotPorn. com. She should be aware of what she may encounter in younger men that’s been learned from porn, and how to talk about what she prefers in that context openly, honestly and lightheartedly.”  On this week’s Savage Lovecast: How to be a professional but friendly unicorn.
