PhilCon 2014
Filk, frack and Frankenstein! The Philadelphia Science Fiction Society returns to the spotlight as Philcon, the city’s annual sci-fi, horror and fantasy convention, celebrates its 78th anniversary this year. From Doctor Who and Star Trek to the mother of science fiction, Mary Shelley, Philcon’s set to serve up another spectacular fest, complete with a selection of engaging discussion panels and informative writing workshops—not to mention fun social gatherings like the Time Travelers Masquerade Ball and a mix of readings, signings and gaming events on the schedule. Philcon 2014’s principal speakers are Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, creators and co-writers of the Liaden universe series. Its artist guest of honor, Bob Eggleton, is a nine-time Hugo Award winner renowned for his breathtaking fantasy illustrations, and noted photographer (and PW contributor) Kyle Cassidy will be feted as a special guest of honor. Founded in 1936—and widely considered the first and longest-running sci-fi confab—Philcon deftly delves into literature, television, film, anime, comics, gaming, costuming, music and more. Its art show, one of the largest on the East Coast, will feature handcrafted works of art including 2-D art, sculpture and jewelry, and its panels will cover haunted-house stories, James Bond in the year 3000, Orson Scott Card’s Enders Game, dystopia in young adult fiction and, of course, the coolest in cosplay. (Speaking of which, attendees are encouraged to compete by designing an original costume or recreating a colorful character from a TV show, film or comic.) Want to debate what inflation problems Middle Earth might fall upon if Smaug’s gold went into circulation or whether the genre of science fiction has gotten too pretentious over the past couple years? Come on down. And if you’re an aspiring storyteller yourself, learn from some of your favorite authors how to create believable aliens and expand short stories into novels. That’s just the beginning: No matter where your interest in the imagination arts lies, Philcon offers something for everyone. // LERA SALMON Fri., Nov. 21 through Sun., Nov. 23, 4pm. Free-$45. Hankering to create more magic at mealtime? Look no further than Anupy Singla’s new book, Indian for Everyone: The Home Cook’s Guide To Traditional Favorites as described by EAT magazine: “Straightforward, healthy recipes for easy preparations of all your favorite Indian dishes combined with mouthwatering photographs make this cookbook any lover of Indian food will appreciate.” Indian For Everyone makes concocting delicious dishes a snap for virtually anyone, regardless of their dietary restrictions, level of expertise or prior familiarity with Indian cuisine. The book—Singla’s third, following 2010’s The Indian Slow Cooker and Vegan Indian Cooking in 2012—includes over 125 classic and popular recipes. Tonight’s event underscores how the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Central branch plans to make excellent use of its new Culinary Literary Center, a sparkling demo kitchen aimed at both improving literacy skills and encouraging confidence in one’s culinary exploits. Singla, the mother of two girls and a former TV reporter and anchor, will give a cooking demonstration plus personalized, signed copies of Indian for Everyone to attendees. So come learn how to cook tasty, nutritrious meals that’ll impress your family, friends, and most of all, that amateur chef in the mirror. Asked what advice she’d offer to novices, Singla offers this: “Leave behind your perceived notions about Indian food … Indian food is flavorful, light and incredibly healthy. Americans are just beginning to discover how amazing it is.” // PAULINA JAYNE

The Cosby Question Hearing TV dad Bill Cosby accused of sexual assault, it’s hard not to instinctively look away. After all, that’s what we do all the time. By Michael A. Gonzales // feedback@philadelphiaweekly.com
N
forces us to add another layer to all our precious memories—forces us to question things in our lives that we’d always thought we could trust. It’s why no one ever wants to believe that, maybe, their uncle might have abused someone. Or their grandfather. Or their dad. Or America’s Dad.
ot long after R&B star Chris Brown made headlines in 2009 for beating up his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, I was contacted by his press department and asked to interview Brown and write the official bio to accompany his then-upcoming album Graffiti. When I explained to the publicist that I’d rather not work with a man who physically assaulted women, her reply was: “You’re going to let his bad behavior stand in the way of getting a check?” There are always people willing to ignore unpleasant truth, if paying attention to it would make their lives harder or sadder. Which brings us, this week, to Bill Cosby. Most of us have had that moment when we’ve learned something awful about a person we’d looked up to. When that’s a loved one, it can be life-changingly terrible—but sometimes we’re almost as shocked when it’s a hero we’ve idolized from afar. It’s ironic: We teach our children that predators come in all forms and can often be the most charming person they know, but when it comes to people who live their lives in the public eye, contributing tremendously to the cultural milieu, we have trouble remembering our own wisdom. We heard about acclaimed director Roman Polanski fleeing for France before sentencing in his statutory rape case involving a 13-yearold. We heard the allegations that pop star R. Kelly cruised his old Chicago high school to find underage girls he could convince to come back to his mansion. We heard allegations that filmmaker Woody Allen, who married his former partner Mia Farrow’s young adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn, molested Farrow’s other daughter Dylan. And for years we heard about Michael Jackson settling lawsuits in which he was accused of molesting young boys. In each case, the public dialogue showed that a large number of us resisted believing the worst. Surely, folks thought, this must be some misunderstanding. This time around, Philadelphia native son Bill Cosby is being accused by multiple women of having drugged and sexually abused them years ago. The most recent to speak out publicly is Joan Tarshis, who claimed this week, in an account published on the blog Hollywood Elsewhere, that the now-77year-old Cosby raped her twice in 1969. Her accusation comes on the heels of another

from actress Barbara Bowman, who wrote an essay last week in the Washington Post alleging that, in 1985, the comic actor “brainwashed me into viewing him as a father figure, and then assaulted me multiple times.” Bowman is just one of the 13 women who’d been cited as possible witnesses in a 2005 civil case that former Temple University basketball official Andrea Constand filed against Cosby, who settled the case out of court. Which is to say: This ugliness has been a matter of public record for years now. Yet it wasn’t until a few weeks ago, when a video of
comedian Hannibal Buress, firmly declaring Cosby “a rapist” during a performance at the Trocadero, began circulating on the Internet, that the sordid stories finally went viral and captured the public’s attention. “Most people don’t believe [it],” Buress said. Later in his performance, he apologized— for “making it weird for you to watch The Cosby Show now.” Indeed. We never want to hear allegations that a loved one might have a dark side. Even given that Cosby has never been criminally charged, listening to the public allegations
Bill Cosby is someone with whom many of us—regardless of race or class—have had a TV-based relationship since we were kids. We consider him part of the family. From his pioneering work on I-Spy, the ‘60s series that made him a star, to The Electric Company and the groundbreaking cartoon classic Fat Albert, based on Cosby’s childhood stories on the streets of Philly, he was always in our lives with a cheery mixture of whimsy, sage advice and a bowl of Jell-O pudding. More so than most of the faces we saw in the media, Bill Cosby seemed to really care about us little people out there in television land as he gave us life lessons about education, bullying and the importance of friendship on Fat Albert. And just when it seemed as though his star was fading, Cosby hit the mother lode of good vibes when he played everyone’s favorite father Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show from 1984 to 1993. He became a daddy to us all—and not just any daddy, but the daddy we always wanted. The one who took time with his kids, showed love to his wife and played John Coltrane records. Bill Cosby was the last person I ever thought would go out all Hollywood Babylon. But then—in real life, Cosby isn’t actually Dr. Huxtable, is he? In real life, Cosby is a professional entertainer who spent lots of time living on the road, admitted to cheating on his wife and wasn’t always the perfect dad. He’s human. He’s flawed. Two days after Barbara Bowman’s story appeared in the Post, Cosby and his wife Camille were being interviewed on NPR about their art collection, currently on display at the Smithsonian, when reporter Scott Simon dared to skirt off-topic—a Hollywood publicist’s nightmare—and asked about the rape issue. In what I’ve come to think of as “The Head Shake Heard ’Round the World,” Cos remained silent. Silence, of course, does not imply guilt. It does, however, remind us of just how many

the uncomfortable whole of our families have spent years avoiding any discussion of the skeletons in our closet. Most of us have them, don’t we? The drug-addicted cousin; the child born out of wedlock; the uncle with a violent temper— all those things we try not to talk about. As if that will make them not be there anymore. Recently, the NFL was forced to terminate Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice after he literally knocked out his girlfriend. But they didn’t do so until video of the brutal incident went viral courtesy of TMZ. It was hard not to be reminded of the Catholic Church’s priest-abuse cases: The institutional “family” wouldn’t truly confront the depth of the problem until it became unavoidably, publicly visible. And even then, we still see commenters on every story eager to insist that the victims, no matter how credible, are just angling for money. I have trouble believing that. A few months back, I posted a picture of Cosby’s late friend Miles Davis on my Facebook page. A female friend wrote me a note asking how I could continue to celebrate a man who was an admitted woman-beater. “I try to separate the art from the man,” I answered. But it wasn’t an easy answer. Truthfully, I’ve struggled with that question in regards to many of my flawed artistic heroes, including James Brown and Steve McQueen. It’s one thing for me to want to separate great art from flawed creators. I’m a man. But a lot of my friends are women, and I’ve heard them share many, many ugly stories over the years of men who seemed charming one minute and then attacked them the next. Men who’d claim to love women, showing off pictures of their daughters, but who, a few cocktails later, would be ranting about all the “bitches” and “hoes” who’d done them wrong. One friend told me how she was attacked in college by the school’s star football player, and even her parents doubted her. Another told her folks about a family friend who “touched her”; nothing was ever done, and the man continued to visit their home. In the case of the allegations against Bill Cosby, the statute of limitations has expired; this is likely never going to go to trial. Still, the comedian’s trademarked fatherly warmth radiating from the television screen isn’t touching my heart the same way today. Would the kind, gentle, loving man who we all watched help Theo with his homework and teach little Rudy how to ride a bike actually drug and rape a woman? That’s an easy question to answer: Of course not. Cliff Huxtable would never do these things. Because Cliff Huxtable is a pure joy. And fictional. Bill Cosby is a real person. And answering that question is not so easy. n Cultural critic Michael A. Gonzales writes about pop culture for soulhead.com, Pitchfork Review and Wax Poetics. He blogs at Blackadelic Pop.

Things Men Do I looked at Chris Brown’s leaked nude pic. That was a violation of his consent. I did it anyway.
S
ending explicit pictures of my junk isn’t something I do every day. In the course of human events, however, it has happened. Hey, this is the 21st century; cupcakes and flowers only go so far. Of course, you’ve gotta be careful; the human factor is a chaotic variable. You never know what some jilted lover or lunatic hacker is going to do with your private photos. Earlier this year, I wrote a piece discussing the infamous celebrity-nudes leak of 2014, in which dozens of famous women— Jennifer Lawrence, Jill Scott and Kirsten Dunst, to name a few— had their personal data accounts compromised and their private nude selfies stolen and widely distributed. “Pathetic wretches,” I called the violators of these women’s privacy. “Basement-dwellers.” Fast forward to now. Like millions of other adults with an Internet connection, blockbuster R&B star Chris Brown has nude selfies stored in the digital record, too. And some have been leaked to the public—first back in 2011, actually, but then again just recently. So, yeah. I looked at his pics. Because I wanted to. Brown—who’s as notorious for having five years ago physically assaulted his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, as he is famous for being a talented and physically attractive artist—has confirmed these were private photos he had no intention of sharing. “I didn’t want to put no pictures out,” he told MTV News in 2011, noting that since he wasn’t “planning on doing porn, I don’t think I’d want to just leak my wang out to the world.” Even Perez Hilton, the depraved gossip columnist, bothered to notice that Brown seemed embarrassed and shy about the situation. Of course, I’m sure Chris Brown isn’t losing any sleep at night over the fact that I specifically looked at unauthorized pictures of his genitals. He doesn’t know I exist; indeed, he’ll never meet most of the people who peeked. Practically speaking, there’s no way that me looking at Brown’s photos hurts him. At least, that’s what I told myself when I looked. Then I realized I wasn’t being honest with myself. Who am I to say what is and is not a violation of Chris Brown’s privacy? Shouldn’t I leave that up to him? What’s with my kneejerk reflex to minimize Brown’s victimhood in this situation, when I’d had no such moral ambiguity just a few months earlier? Likewise, why do I want to bring up the fact that Brown punched Rihanna in 2009 when that fact has nothing whatsoever to do with the issue of invading his privacy to ogle his body in 2014? Why do I feel the right to unilaterally decide whose consent I’ll respect, and by how much—an arbitrary line that I’ll then conveniently move at my lascivious whims? Here’s the unpleasant answer: Because I’m a man, that’s why. That’s the insidious reality of oppressive privilege in society. And male privilege is not just a thing with straight guys. when I was growing up, thanks to the homophobic nature of American culture, I never felt any sort of sexual empowerment. As a gay teenager, I couldn’t talk with my high school friends about the boys I had crushes on, and I certainly couldn’t pin up the type of calendar I’d have liked to look at on my bedroom wall. (I remember one Christmas when my father gave me the Sports Illustrated swimsuit calendar. It was a noble effort, Dad.) For years, I watched the straight boys and men around me relish the fun of leering at the objects of their sexual desire—in pictures, on TV, in school. I couldn’t join them without risking
being ostracized or worse. At a certain point, though, I could no longer stand faking heterosexuality. So I started sneaking down to Philly’s Gayborhood, walking around aimlessly amid the rainbow flags and hoping I’d learn how to be a gay man. On one of these surreptitious field trips, I walked by a café at 12th and Walnut streets, and an older gay man sitting outside looked at me, taking note of my big ears. “You got nice handlebars, boy,” he said, gesturing as though I were giving him oral sex. It was jarring, and I giggled, because I didn’t know what else to do. I was 17, and finally, here was the sort of gutter talk my straight peers had been enjoying since puberty. So, as I entered young adulthood as a gay male, I took up the same behavior. Objectifying strangers on the street, whether explicitly catcalling them or simply ogling them, became a regular occurrence for me in gay-friendly areas. It was exhilarating, and what was more, it didn’t seem entirely unwelcome. It sometimes led to sexual encounters and, occasionally, traditional dinner dates. And more to the point, I felt justified. Had I not been marginalized throughout youth, and thus did I not have the right to at long last assert my masculine sexual prowess? Now a strong, robust, sexually virile adult man, could I not finally enjoy, figuratively and literally, swinging a big dick?
Did I not have the right to, at long last, assert my masculine sexual prowess? The same attitude, I realized, was at play as I tried to convince myself it had been okay to objectify Chris Brown by looking at his private photos. Karmic justice—he punched Rihanna, he deserves it! I’m not hurting anyone, right? He was the one stupid enough to take pictures of his dick, after all—that’s not my fault, is it? The fact that I was even asking these questions is problematic. Just because someone has a certain history, that doesn’t mean they’re not a human being deserving of the same rights as any other person. And just because I’m gay doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the oppressive privilege all men in our society do. That is what the intersection of male privilege and rape culture looks like through the lens of a gay man. I’m not proud of it. I can and must do better. We, as a society, can and must do better. This is where principles truly come into play. If I’m willing to recognize the humanity of Chris Brown, of all people, then I actually meant the noble words I uttered about the people who looked at Jennifer Lawrence’s photos. When I decided to look at Brown’s dick pics against his consent, I failed; effectively, I became that man who lewdly gestured at me when I was a teenager. And when someone does that, whether we’re man or woman or straight or gay, it sustains the cycle of abuse in American society. Sometimes, this abuse is active, like harassing a man or woman on the street. In the case of looking a guy’s cock picture without his consent, it might seem a little murkier, but it’s really not. n

FOOD & DRINK FIV E B EER S
TURKEY DAY TIPPLED
1
Morland Old Speckled Hen. Pairing a beer with the mounds and mounds of comfort food you’ll probably be having on Thanksgiving requires careful selection. Not just any style of beer goes with turkey and mashed potatoes and green beans, after all. If there is a style you can’t go wrong with when eating a meal like that, it’s the ESB, or Extra Special Bitter. The ESB is a traditional English pub ale, and Morland’s Old Speckled Hen is among the first many Americans will encounter. The ESB is a wonderfully smooth and subtle style, and Old Speckled Hen is no exception. Nutty malts and toffee sweetness are balanced with gently fruity hops and mild carbonation. A bitter finish with the faintest sour tang at the end are a great complement to holiday-style food. Try this pub classic at Kite & Key and The Whip Tavern.
2
Sly Fox Chester County Bitter. If you prefer your English bitters to be made a little closer to home, Pottstown’s Sly Fox has just the beer for you: Chester County Bitter, a robust, flavorful English-style pub ale that adheres closely to traditional and is all the better for it. Tastes of toasted nuts, toffee and black bread ensure this beer will go well with your Thanksgiving sweet potatoes and brown gravy, while the gentle, herbal hop bitterness ensures there will be a little bite to cut through the taste of all that grub. This beer is cask-conditioned, meaning it’s soft and smooth and only mildly carbonated—just like a good ESB should be. There are few better food & friends beers than the English bitter, and this is a good one. Currently on draft at over a half-dozen locations, try this excellent Pennsy ESB at City Tap House, Watkins Drinkery, The Victoria Freehouse and other locations.
3
Ommegang Game Of Thrones Valar Morghulis. Thanksgiving is linked to more historical bloodshed than we generally acknowledge, but that’s not why we picked this murderously divine beer brewed as a tribute to the bloodiest show in history. Ommegang’s Valar Morghulis is an excellent beer to have with your Thanksgiving Day meal simply because it’s a fantastic Belgian-style dubbel, and the dubbel is a style that was specifically crafted to pair well with food. Black cherries, raisins and earthy brown sugar are spiked with touches of black pepper, musky yeast and warming alcohol to create a beer that will pair well with almost anything on your holiday table. Few American breweries can match Ommegang when it comes to Belgian-style beers, so it’s no surprise that this is one of the best dubbels currently available. If you need proof, try it at Madira, The Pour House and Blue Dog Tavern Chalfont.
4
Cigar City Good Gourd. When the turkey and potatoes are finally cleared off the Thanksgiving Day table, the pie comes out to play—and there is no pie more closely associated with Thanksgiving than pumpkin pie. You know what that means. Time for what might be your last pumpkin beer of the year. If pumpkins beers are going to go out, Cigar City’s Good Gourd will make sure they go out in style. This big, warming brew (8.5 percent ABV) features lots of chewy pumpkin and, of course, the bracing burst of pumpkin spices you’ve come to expect from beers like this. Nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon are all in the mix, though not so much they wash away the sweet notes of molasses and syrup. If you want a beer to have alongside your pie, you can’t go wrong with this one. Give it a preview at Churchville Inn and Tap Room on 19th.
5
Free Will Coffee Oatmeal Brown Ale. After you’re done dragging your drunk uncle to the couch and cleaning up the dog’s puke—whose idea was it to let him eat the leftovers, anyway?— your Thanksgiving Day dinner probably ends with coffee and gossip. Your family can provide the gossip while the folks at Perkasie’s, PA’s Free Will Brewing will supply the coffee. Most coffee beers tend to be stouts, so it’s a welcome change of pace to find one that mixes things up a bit. This is an imperial brown ale (8.3 percent ABV) spiked with generous amounts of java. The aroma is filled with it, suggesting espresso and coffee grounds, and so is the taste. Plenty of coffee roast merges nicely with the nutty caramel malts of the brown ale underneath. Coffee bitterness dominates the dry finish, making this a great way to cap off the holiday. Try it at The Goat’s Beard. | ERIC SAN JUAN
The Urban Rustic From tomato jam to apple dumplings, Cresheim Valley Grain Exchange is doing an awful lot right. By Brian Freedman // bfreedman@philadelphiaweekly.com
A
t this point in the evolution of our local hamburger culture, it takes an awful lot to rise above the white noise of all the good ones. It’s gotten to the point here that we all justifiably expect a well-formed patty, sandwiched between the halves of a conscientiously chosen bun, and accompanied by accoutrements that frame yet never overwhelm the (preferably grass-fed) beef. The bar has been set at a very high level indeed, and carnivores around the region are justifiably jaded. Which is what made the Farmhouse Burger at the Cresheim Valley Grain Exchange such a pleasant surprise: Because it did stand out, but not because of anything terribly flashy. Good meat, applewood bacon, Cooper sharp, a potato bun: All of that is pretty standard. But the addition of house-made tomato jam, a little sweet, a little acidic, raised everything else to a higher level, like a good character actor in a movie. The result was a burger as balanced and munchable as you’ll find right now. When things go right at the Grain Exchange—as they do throughout the smart menu—they succeed for reasons of detail. Fried garlic-dill pickle spears were clearly brined with care, given their ultimate fate as anchors for a pleasantly crispy crust: There was enough vinegar to slice through their shells and the herbed buttermilk ranch into which they were dipped, but not so much that they came off as unnecessarily sour. Large buttermilk biscuits, likewise, found the perfect intersection of flakiness and heft, and the tension created by the lighter interior and the occasionally snappier edges of the outside was an object lesson in how attention to detail can reframe a standard you thought you knew so well, all while maintaining the very characteristics that made it such a classic in the first place. Still, no restaurant is perfect, and occasional dishes perplexed more than they should have. A dip of white beans and roasted red beets, served at too cold a temperature, failed to excite; had I been blindfolded, I likely would have identified it as a bland, tahini-less riff on hummus. The excellent burger was unfortunately accompanied by a generous but relatively dreary tangle of fries, precious few of which had much snap or crunch, and many of which were too oil-logged. And while the vegetarian grilled cheese sandwich won me over with its always reliable combination of brie, pear and well-caramelized onion, its tempeh “bacon,” while providing an excellent smoky note, didn’t possess much crunch, which the otherwise soft gathering of ingredients could have used. But those are all relatively easy fixes, and overall, there’s a great deal to like about the Grain Exchange, which occupies the space that formerly housed the Wine Thief. The rustic-chic space, all pressed tin and washed wooden boards, shines with plenty of natural light. And the soundtrack, which on a recent Saturday afternoon tended in the general direction of old-school soul and R&B, is a supremely pleasant addition. Service was friendly, if perhaps not as knowledgeable as it might have been about the robust draft beer selection—but that was easily compensated for by a willingness to offer samples before I

CRESHEIM VALLEY GRAIN EXCHANGE
7152 Germantown Ave. 267.766.2502 Cuisine type: American comfort. Hours: 11am-midnight. Price range: $5-$22. Atmosphere: Rustic chic. Food: Comforting, with just the right amount of creativity. Service: Friendly and helpful; a little more beer knowledge could go a long way. committed to a full glass. All told, the Grain Exchange is an excellent addition to the Germantown Avenue corridor. I personally plan on returning for the delicious fried chicken and waffles benedict in the next week or so; with just a little more hollandaise, this could be among the most rewarding brunch dishes around. And while the pleasant if forgettable butterscotch pudding won’t be in my plans, the apple dumplings absolutely will be: Chewy, perfectly turned-out wrappers filled with a textbook center of tender apples, all of it accompanied by melty vanilla ice cream? In a bright space while Nina Simone does her thing on the soundtrack? It’s awfully hard to argue with the appeal of that.

sn’t it weird when you really love a band, but only love one record they’ve put out—an album so amazing, it seals your adoration ‘til the end of time? What about bands that have a phase or era you cling to when they insist on putting out material distinctly different from the part of them that you love? It’s weird. I’ve always loved Animal Collective, but mostly because I worship Sung Tongs. I love Sleater-Kinney primarily because of The Woods. I can’t say that I really like Weezer, but we all know The Blue Album is absolutely free of flaws. That’s how I feel about Interpol’s Turn On the Bright Lights. I didn’t care too much for 2004’s Antics, Our Love to Admire three years later or their self-titled in 2010. But Turn On the Bright Lights, the nowtrio’s 2002 debut, is, to me, pretty much the best American rock record of the 2000s—and that’s really saying something. Maybe that’s why the band’s Saturday night’s show at Union Transfer is sold out. (So is their scheduled Dec. 1 return date.) Yes, it’s over a dozen years old and, in fact, Matador gave us a beautiful reissue in 2012 to honor its 10-year anniversary. And while I’ve listened to their brand new El Pintor—which is Spanish for “the painter” and an anagram of their name—and enjoyed it, I really don’t care about any other Interpol record than Bright Lights. It really is a masterpiece. The fact that it still resonates as we head into 2015 is either a reflec-

tion of my overactive nostalgic leanings or a testament to the LP’s standing as the most beautiful morose guitar-rock record to ever emerge out of New York’s early aughts. Yes, this too was where the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Strokes were born, but Bright Lights has a uniqueness to it missing from the latter’s 2001 Is This It. I cherish a classic four-piece that manages to somehow capture a rich, full rock ‘n roll sound with minimal pomp—something the Strokes always had in abundance. Lifting up Paul Banks’ melancholic, Ian Curtis-flavored spoken-sung vocals is the ultimate bass and guitar interplay between Carlos Dengler, whose bass lines are simply exquisite, and Daniel Kessler’s extraordinary, eerie guitar work. Of course, Samuel Fogarino’s drumming is as steady and essential as Questlove’s Things Fall
Apart calisthenics. It’s no surprise Turn On The Bright Lights has made all kinds of impressive lists: Number eight on NME’s “100 Greatest Albums of the Decade,” number six on Stylus’ “Top 50 Albums 2000-2005” and number 20 on Pitchfork’s “Top 200 Albums of the 2000s.” Shoot, it’s in my top three or five of all fucking time. The only record that approaches its dark, emotional beauty is PJ Harvey’s Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea—also born of New York City, but two years prior. They could be cousins, both playing with that notion of sonic messiness that’s actually meticulously pretty. Sat., Nov. 22, 8:30pm. Sold out. With Hundred Waters. One Night Only: David Bowie Is
T
he gender-bending, label-defying, genre-defining, interstitial artist and interstellar alien intelligence born David Jones—better known to the peoploids on this dimensional plane as David Bowie—is, as the title of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s traveling exhibit David Bowie Is immediately informs you, many things. He’s a musician, a painter, an actor. He’s Ziggy Stardust and Halloween Jack, the Thin White Duke and the Goblin King, an image-builder and an iconoclast. Just when the world thinks it has his persona set in stone, he pulls a sledgehammer from somewhere inside his quantum coats and starts all over again. David Bowie Is, currently on its one North American stopover in Chicago until Jan. 4, 2015, is an almost overwhelmingly thorough retrospective of the androgynous rock deity’s life and career. Using sound, visuals and a staggering number of items from Bowie’s personal collection, the exhibition drops visitors directly into its subject’s headspace and guides them through 50 years of multimedia shapeshifting, Being John Malkovich for Diamond Dogs. With the understanding that, unlike Bowie, most of us aren’t beings of pure light and energy capable of instantly teleporting to Chicago, Melbourne, or many of the other far-flung stops on the tour’s roster, the V&A is re-releasing the accompanying documentary of the same name, equally comprehensive, to select cinemas across the country for a single night only. Touching in-depth on highlights from the installation, hosted by the curators, and featuring appearances by Jarvis Cocker, Kansai Yamamoto and others influenced or influential, it’s a fine substitute for experiencing the exhibit firsthand—although nothing quite beats the electric charge of ending up eyeball-to-eyeball with the hand-scribbled lyrics to “Ziggy Stardust.” | Wed., Nov. 19, 7pm. $15. In the world of revisionist Westerns like The Homesman, women’s greatest danger is most often not the unflinching landscape, but its men. By Genevieve Valentine // feedback@philadelphiaweekly.com
F
ew places are so easily forgiven for being fatal than the good old American West. No matter what’s come before it, it’s a romantic thing to ride out into the scrub country to die, dive off a picturesque mountain to protect the wagon train,or expire on the dry red clay under those thousands of stars. Though there are plenty of Westerns about man ultimately conquering the wilderness, whether geographic or conveniently embodied by Native Americans, it’s rarely done without sacrificing a little blood to the ground under their feet. There’s a reason “Bury Me Not On the Lone Prairie” is one of the most famous cowboy hymns: Lonely and horribly mortal that prairie surely is. The Homesman, an unrelenting and unrelentingly strange flick, excoriates the idea of the solid, occasionally noble pioneer West with the same efficiency it tackles the idea of the supportive and hardy prairie wife. Here, the land and the life it demands is enough to drive a woman insane. It’s no coincidence all three women who go mad are treated to some degree like brood mares by husbands who look at children as just another crop. And when you die on this ground, not so much as your headstone endures. The Homesman even refuses to take comfort in the occasional beauty of its landscape; it’s a bleak and distant planet. This is a movie in which the obligatory band of Native American riders drops its facade of menace to chase a loosed horse—because, as George Briggs informs Mary Bee, they’ll need the mare for meat. The land in winter makes beggars of them all. However, in the world of feminist revisionist Westerns (as far back as 1970’s Two Mules for Sister Sara and including the more recent The Missing and Meek’s Cutoff), it’s worth noting how the greatest danger to women is most often not the West, but its men. The image of a faithful woman in calico
standing staunchly at the threshold is certainly iconic, but in moving her out from behind the traditional lead and into narratives of her own, the bleak and desolate places become a stage for a morality play about the treatment of women on any frontier. Here, The Homesman is only too happy to oblige. The three women being carted from the open land to the tidy lanes of Iowa become the wages paid for men to feel like they can make their mark on the land—that they can be a part of the self-making myth of the West—and at one point, the women quite literally hang on Tommy Lee Jones’ George Briggs like ghostly chains, haunting his previous attempts to be one with the land and free. Both the danger and the toxic masculinity find form in Hilary Swank, who seems doomed to excel playing nobly determined martyrs to a cause. As Mary Bee Cuddy, her competence means she’s masculinized by the townspeople in their corner of the Nebraska territory, deemed too bossy and plain to be considered a wife. The perverse freedom it offers her is what sets her as the women’s guardian at all. But the full scope of the film’s nihilism requires a significant spoiler: Mary Bee commits suicide in the film’s final third. It draw gasps, but it’s hardly a startling turn. The toll that the land took on her was second only to the dehumanization she felt in her unwilling solitude. Whenever she asks a man to marry her, she’s asking for a reason to hold on. For all its hopelessness, there’s a sense of grim awareness to The Homesman, as if a curtain has been lifted to reveal the rot we always knew was there. And at times, it reaches such heights of pathos that the film begins to feel like its own madwoman, asking you with increasing desperation what it all was for and finding no answers. George orders a headstone; it will never make it back to the lone prairie.

#TurkeyDayTailgate
’ve been doing my homework,” jokes Dorothy Wilkie, the artistic director of Kúlú Mélé. “Dancing has taken me around the world, and it’s been a wonderful journey. I wouldn’t want it any other way.” Guinea twice, Ghana, Senegal, Cuba and back to Philly. It’s how she’s been growing Kúlú Mélé—what she dubbed “the largest continually performing African dance company in Philadelphia”—for a whopping 32 years at its helm. Danzas de Cuba, Kúlú Mélé’s upcoming 45th anniversary celebration at the Painted Bride, will feature the first-ever local performance by the renowned Oyu Oro Afro Cuban Experimental Dance Company for one lively night (and two matinees) teeming with wondrous movement and thunderous music, followed by a festive meet-the-artists champagne and cake reception. Prepare to be left breathless by Wilkie’s striking choreography, alongside that of Mora Amador and Oyu Oro’s venerable founder, Danys “LaMora” Perez. “You can expect high energy,” Wilkie boasts. “You can expect laughter and fun. You can expect beautiful costumes with beautiful colors, and you can expect to see children performing with us.” That last part, she says, is part of the glue that binds Kúlú Mélé and will keep it together well into the company’s 50s and 60s. “I look at it like we’re passing the torch,” she says. What, you ask, is West African dance all about? “It’s a lot of body movement,” says Wilkie. “It takes energy, ya know? It’s healthy, It keeps you going. It doesn’t matter what age you are. You don’t have to move as fast as the younger people, but it keeps your blood moving, your limbs working. It keeps your mind free because when you do African dance, you don’t think about the bill you didn’t pay. It’s an outlet.” African dance, she adds, can take you places. “It’s mesmerizing. You travel. Your mind travels.” Africa and Cuba—or the whole of the West Indies, for that matter—are linked in fascinating ways, most notably, of course, due to the slave trade, so African traditions have been kept alive and also been tweaked and twisted in unexpected ways. Think Spanish culture interpreted with Yoruba language and tradition. Danzas de Cuba, Wilkie vows, will be “Afro Cuban dance at its best. We’re doing traditional dances from Nigeria by way of Cuba.”
Speaking of Cuba itself: “It’s wonderful!” she says. “I think the culture there and the people are so beautiful and so happy. It’s so beautiful there.” She met a collaborator there nearly 15 years ago, and she can’t wait to go back. “What I do is I study the culture, and that’s what I’ve been practicing for many, many years.” Both schools of dance, Cuban and West African, use many of the same instrumental tools to fuel their respective fires: all kinds of drums and assorted percussion especially. There’ll be bata drums perched onto laps, conga drums, shekeres and agogôs galore. And the West African bit’ll pull out djun-djun and djembe drums, too, so there’s no way you’ll remain still. Wilkie described social dances, too—dances that spring up spontaneously when Cuban and African communities and families gather, which has resulted, over centuries, in everything from drum circles to Soul Train lines to B-boy battles. In fact, one of the happiest accidents Wilkie’s ever come across in the many visits Kúlú Mélé pays to schools and universities, was having her son—a hip-hop dancer—get down to some African rhythms. I want you to dance hip-hop, but I don’t want you to use your own music—I want you to dance to the drum, she told her son and a friend, and “it went over so big,” Wilkie says. “People really loved it.” The young ones were turned out. “The girls [go] after them like they’re the Jackson 5. They wanna know their names and get some more information.” It’s a way for Kúlú Mélé to connect with hip-hop-obssessed youth. “We show the young people that your dance comes from this.” Over the years, Wilkie has recruited scores of dancers from the Philly area, many of whom are ballet, modern and tap aficionados, too, who bring their skills to Kúlú Mélé, their energy and excitement helping it—and them—elevate. She took the entire company to Guinea, where they saw Ballet Africaine, a legendary African dance company out of Conakry. “That was beautiful,” she says, “because it’s African and told through ballet with singing, dancing and drumming.” This week, Kúlú Mélé and Oyu Oro will do just that, but with their gaze set firmly on Cuba. Sounds muy hermosa. Tues., Nov. 25, Sat., Nov. 29 and Sun, Nov. 30. $8-$40. Painted Bride, 230 Vine St. paintedbride.org
SAVAGE LOVE By Dan Savage // mail@savagelove.net
Yours is the kind of letter that gets me in trouble, STICK. Clit-having readers and clit-loving readers will be doubling over on the subway, in office cubicles, in the bathrooms aboard Air Force One— wherever my column is read, people will be doubling over. And I will spend the next week wading through furious emails from angry/clueless readers convinced that your letter’s appearance in my column will lead to a worldwide clit-sticking boom. Allow me to address their concerns first: That’s not the way this works, that’s not the way any of this works. People don’t adopt sex practices or kinks after hearing about them. If that were the way it worked—if hearing about a crazy kink inspired otherwise vanilla types to run out and try it—we would all be shoving gerbils in our asses. OK, STICK, I worked my medical-world connections and found someone who wasn’t just qualified to answer your question, but also willing to do it on the record. “Piercing and needling, if practiced in a safe and sterile manner, can be stimulating,” says Dr. Brian Fitzsimmons, a gynecologist (obgynvancouver.ca) and a clinical associate professor at the University of British Columbia. “But permanent damage with needling can occur to the sensory receptors that allow us to experience pleasure and stimulation.” So the short answer to your question, STICK, is this: Yes, you are risking permanent damage. “There may be immediate risks with needling, such as bleeding and infection, in addition to longterm side effects,” says Fitzsimmons. “And potential long-term side effects are especially concerning in regards to very sensitive areas, such as the glans of the penis or the clitoris. Short-term stimulation and excitement with needling has the potential to cause permanent damage, chronic discomfort and numbing of these areas. Permanent scarring and deformation can also occur. This is something that may not be correctable—even with surgery.” Some adult pleasures come with built-in risks— skydiving, snowboarding, clit-needling—and an adult does a quick risk-reward analysis before deciding if the potential reward is worth the risk. It’s your clit, STICK, and you’ll have to weigh the risks and rewards for yourself. But you won’t find me sticking needles in my clit. “If orgasm is mediated by the clitoris or the glans of the penis in the individual,” says Fitzsimmons, “this practice can cause loss of the ability to achieve orgasm.”
Knife play is a kink unto itself—it mostly involves drawing a sharp blade across someone’s flesh without actually cutting or drawing blood—and while most knife-play scenes include bondage (helplessness heightening the eroticized threat), only a tiny percentage of bondage scenes include knives. People into rope bondage typically keep a sturdy pair of blunt-edged scissors in their playrooms or gear bags. The scissors are for emergencies, not for play—the last thing a panicking bondage bottom who needs to be untied now wants to see coming at them is a knife.
During the Jodi Arias trial, it was suggested that Arias made up the story about her and Travis Alexander practicing bondage so there was an excuse for why a knife would be nearby. I was wondering: How common is it for knives to be used or included in bondage scenarios? Don’t Understand Bondage
I’m dating the man of my dreams. The only sticking point: He has a 5-year-old daughter who lives with him full-time (the mom is out of the picture). The kid is sweet, and the three of us get along great. I’ve introduced my boyfriend to my kinks, which include tying him up. He’s been open and enthusiastic. But he won’t be tied up when his daughter is in the apartment. The idea of bondage under the same roof as his child bothers him, I guess, or the idea that she could need his help with something, and he could be in a situation where I might have to untie him first. This isn’t a big deal now because we don’t live together. (He gets a babysitter and comes over to my place.) But he’s asked me to move in. I want to, but I’m worried about frustration or resentment down the road if this part of our sex life becomes seriously limited. Can’t Let Innocent Child Know The fact that your boyfriend gets a babysitter and comes over to your place is a good sign, CLICK. It means his daughter wasn’t so traumatized by the loss/disappearance of her mother that she can’t bear to be separated from her father for an evening. But living with a small child—a small child who doesn’t take a locked door for an answer (and most don’t)—will impact your sex life. But instead of thinking of her presence as a limitation, CLICK, think of it as a challenge. And this one seems like an easily solvable challenge: Right now when you want to tie him up, he gets a sitter and comes over to your place. In the future, once you’ve moved in together, you can drop the kid off at the sitter’s house and head home for a risk-of-kid-poundingon-the-bedroom-door-free bondage scene. The limitations on your bondage sessions will be no greater once you’re living together.

In other words: Anyone who requires clit/dickhead stimulation in order to get off—and that’s pretty much everyone with a clit and/or dick head—shouldn’t be sticking needles into their clit/ dick head. A final thought from Fitzsimmons: “If you’re engaging in this type of practice, it’s important not to share needles, just like with any other sex toy. The risks of transmitting infections such as HIV, hepatitis, syphilis and other STIs need to be considered. Anyone having more questions on this or experiencing complications or problems should contact their local clinic or health-care provider.”

I am a 30-year-old trans guy, on T since college, happy and comfortable with my sexuality. However, I can’t find any helpful health info on a fetish I’ve developed: I insert needles directly into my clit, maybe an inch and a half in. I’m not talking through it, like a piercing, but into it, going in at the head and moving down into the shaft. There are lots of porn/BDSM sites that discuss piercing all sorts of “female” anatomy, and many that cover the excitement of needles inserted into the glans of the penis, but few go into details about putting needles directly into the clit itself—and none that I’ve found cover safety. As a trans man, this is a particularly tempting practice because, well, my clit is huge and I have a constant legal supply of safe, sterile needles. Still, I want to know if I am potentially causing permanent nerve damage. If one of your connections in the medical world has a sense of this, I’d love to know. Sticking Things In Clit Knowledgeably
