There was so much 420-centric content this week, we had to parlay some of it to our site, philadelphiaweekly.com. Check out South Philly’s own Geroge Martorano’s Hip Hemp Cafe. We sitdown with Nick Mason, drummer for Pink Floyd, who dispels the notion that despite being the band of choice for stoners, the group preferred a good glass of wine over the stickyicky. Additionally, there’s a whole list of 420-centric events to consider if, you know, you’re into that sort of thing.

Shoutout to the six Philly artists making our old, nasty boxes look like a snack again. Courtesy of a partnership with arts initiative, Tiny Room for Elephants, six of our old honor boxes has been commissioned by area street artists and painters, primed, and painted with signature artwork. The six boxes will be on display April 19 at during the second annual Tiny Room for Elephants art exhibit inside Cherry Street Pier. Artists like Alloyius McIlwaine, Lawren Alice (Arch Enemy Arts), Seper and others put their creativity on our canvas and we can’t be happier with the results. According to a Philly.com report, the survival of a tenured PSD teachers pension rests on the success of everything from California pistachios, almonds to Florida oranges. Additionally, the state investment fund has also been gobbling up vacant properties in Harrisburg, seven since 2016, despite suggesting that it wouldn’t back retirements on the real estate market. Coping mechanism Using marijuana to deal with the anxieties of daily life? For some, it’s a given by any means necessary BY COURTENAY HARRIS BOND

R

o S., an educator who did not want to use her full name, has battled crippling anxiety and depression her whole life. She has been on multiple antidepressants. Almost 15 years ago, her father died suddenly. Recently, her mother was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. “That kind of brought everything on in an extreme way,” said Ro, a Philadelphia resident. She turned to cannabis oil for relief. “It calms me down,” she said. “That typical stoner mentality is not the case. I work every day. I’ve never ever, ever – and I’m 42 – missed work because of it.” Research into the effects of cannabis products on mental health is in its infancy, with a handful of studies showing that they can help ease anxiety. “Despite the growing number of anecdotal reports of the anxiety-dampening properties of cannabis, there has been little scientific research done on the effects of cannabis itself on anxiety,” wrote Carl Stevenson, associate professor of neuroscience at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, via an email to Philadelphia Weekly. “This is partly due to legal restrictions on this type of research in certain countries but also because cannabis contains over 100 chemicals that potentially act in the body and only a handful of them have begun to be characterized in terms of their effects on anxiety.” Still, many people, Ro included, are turning to weed as an alternative to traditional antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications, finding cannabis products to be particularly effective at dulling the edge on their anxiety and lessening the stress posed by the hurdles of daily life. They’re not smoking weed to get “fucked up,” but rather to cope and become more functional human beings, users said. Cannabis has two major components: the psychoactive THC and the non-psychoactive CBD, which have opposing effects on anxiety. THC can increase anxiety, especially at high doses, while CBD is said to reduce the anxious effect THC provides and “can also decrease anxiety on its own, particularly in situations that normally provoke anxiety,” according to Stevenson. This has been shown in healthy human volunteers and in animal tests, he added, noting that more research is needed and that other tested medicines and therapies are available for anxiety in the meantime. Dr. Mikhail Kogan, medical director of the George Washington Center for Integrative Medicine, said that vaping or taking CBD products sublingually makes the most sense because the effects reach the brain more quickly and more fully. Taken orally, as, in the form of gummies, about 20 percent of the CBD reaches the brain, Kogan said.

“We don’t actually know how to dose it,” Kogan said, saying that every patient was an N-1, a scientific term meaning that each patient becomes his or her own experiment. The best approach is to start with a low dose and slowly titrate up until the desired anxiety relief is achieved, he added. Therapy is very important to get at the root of what is causing the anxiety in the first place, especially “for people who have failed other approaches for anxiety, it [CBD] is a reasonable alternative,” Kogan noted. Although she still takes Zoloft, Ro has given up her other medications in favor of vaping CBD oil some mornings before work and in the evenings after stressful days. “I need to chill out,” Ro said. “My brain is going a mile a minute. It helps me organize my thoughts and do what I need to do for the day or go to bed and get rest for the next day.” Ro has even gotten a medical marijuana card for her mother, who experiences a lot of anxiety and frustration related to her Alzheimer’s. “When she gets frustrated, she cries, unfortunately, a lot,” Ro said, noting that vaping “calms” her mother down. Carrie S., 37, of Philadelphia, smokes weed on a regular basis as a way of helping her deal with the anxiety of having a chronic health condition. Carrie suffers from Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, which means her body doesn’t produce quality connective tissue. “I’m like a poorly constructed house,” she said. “You hang a picture, and the door flies off the hinges.” She is in constant pain from joints hyper-extending and becoming dislocated, including her tailbone, which is “excruciating,” according to Carrie. She also has a more general, constant pain resulting from the syndrome. “I feel like I’ve been poisoned,” she said. “It just hurts on a cellular level.” But Carrie has not found cannabis to be particularly effective for pain. Instead, she smokes marijuana most days to help with the anxiety produced by her disease, by worries that what she does next may cause her more discomfort. Carrie did not want to use her full name because she does not have a medical marijuana card. She always buys her pot from dealers recommended by a relative or friend and tries to maintain consistent relationships with individual sellers. “I feel [the psychoactive effects] a little bit,” said Carrie, a pastry chef, who mostly smokes in the evening. “But it’s not inebriating. I have more control over what I focus on… I can read an article and concentrate on reading and not focus on how my tailbone is hurting.” Carrie pursued getting pain medication for a long time, but when she finally got an appointment at a pain clinic, the doctor told her she was too young, and he wouldn’t treat her. In the meantime, Carrie has given up

7

on conventional medicine to help the symptoms of her syndrome – the intense pain, constant nausea, the crippling anxiety that she is going to hurt herself further – and has turned to moderate doses of pot as a way to cope. “I like weed because it’s very reliable,” Carrie said. “I know that it will help with a good number of my symptoms better than any pill I’ve ever taken.” Erica Daniels, of Horsham, has found that to be the case for her 14-year-old son Leo who has autism and was having extended “meltdowns” on a daily basis before she began giving him medical cannabis three years ago. “Literally, I’m a single mom, I was like, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do,’” Daniels recalled. In that moment of desperation, Daniels decided to use cannabis in the form of tincture drops under Leo’s tongue three to four times a day. “The anxiety is not gone, but it’s so much better, and the quality of life is so much better,” said Daniels, explaining that anxiety and obsessive-compulsive behaviors are often some of the top symptoms for someone with autism. “His whole mood changed from the time he started [using the tincture]. He would perseverate on not going somewhere or not doing something. Now we can go out in the community more.” One notable example came when Daniels was finally able to take Leo on an airplane so they could go to Disney World. Daniels founded a nonprofit called Hope Grows for Autism, aimed at improving the lives of families affected by autism through education, advocacy and research. She said that she has spoken to a lot of caregivers of individuals with autism who find cannabis products also help with their own anxiety and stress, improving life for the entire family. A Bala Cynwyd mother and educator who wanted to remain anonymous for fear of public and professional retribution took prescribed medications to cope with her anxiety and ADHD. She gave all of them up more than a decade ago. Finding herself suffering again, especially from anxiety, she discovered the benefits of vaping CBD oil about three years ago. “I don’t love big social situations, and I’m nervous about my kids,” said the 43-year-old. “It takes that anxious feeling away.” But she doesn’t like to tell people she vapes, despite the fact that she has found cannabis to be “a really useful tool.” “I think there’s a little bit of a black cloud over it for some people because they think it’s an illegal drug,” she added. “So many states are legalizing it. We need to legalize it [in Pennsylvania]. It’s time.”

hen Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason hits The Met Philadelphia for his first solo tour, he will do so on April 20, an apt date considering the “interstellar overdrive” and psychedelic gamesmanship of the night’s material. Mason may be going this one alone, but expect much of the psilocybin-laced sounds of Floyd and its magnum opus, “The Dark Side of the Moon.” Before his new live showcase aptly entitled “A Saucerful of Secrets” – celebrating the Pink Floyd album of the same name – Mason spoke with Philadelphia Weekly about getting back in the groove of performing. In addition, he explains intricacies that comprise a live tour and his first ever in Philly a sold-out stadium show inside the former JFK Stadium on July 24, 1968.

PHILADELPHIAWEEKLY.COM @PHILLYWEEKLY

MASON, FROM PAGE 11 You are playing in Philly for this tour on 4/20. Pink Floyd has always had a movement toward mind expansion, a stoner’s feel vibe, much like the trippy music that you and your band will play at The Met. Do you smoke? Or has marijuana had much presence in your life, past or present? You’re going to think I’m kidding, but not very much. Not really. Although people have always painted us as this psychedelic band – and of course Syd had his problems with LSD – that probably frightened us off from any drugs. Plus, so much of our music is so technical, it’s not free form and about wild abandon. I can’t remember any of Pink Floyd ever being on stage under the influence of anything apart from, say, a glass of white wine. Wow. Quite the revelation. And interesting considering when I’ve interviewed Roger Waters face-to-face, that’s what he was drinking: white wine. We were the house band for many of the acid psychedelic experiences in London, but I don’t think that we were disciples of any drugs, pot or otherwise, in any way. What was the secret to re-learning or getting into the mindset of material that neither you nor Pink Floyd performed for ages once “Dark Side of the Moon” disbanded? Specifically, all of the Syd Barrett stuff you and your crew will execute here? In my mind, there’s a complexity to Syd-songs that you miss at first listen. You’re absolutely right. When we started rehearsing, I remembered the songs but had forgotten their complexity. There are odd bar lengths and much that doesn’t follow the usual patterns, all of which makes playing them far more interesting. Having accomplished musicians with me helps me sort out what is needed at any given moment. Considering your own parts within the early Barrett or Roger Waters material you’ll perform, are you looking to further the intent and dimension of the original tracks or hew closer to the original vibe? It’s a rather delicate balance. I, or we, obviously want to represent what was there originally, but, maybe give them enough twists to make it doubly interesting 50 years later. It depends on the attitude one takes to it. You can utilize the same structure as, say, on “Atom Heart Mother,” but you take a few liberties. Ours is different than the original, but I believe we get across its melodies. Last autumn, Rhino released “Unattended Luggage,” a box of your solo records that show how adventurous and audacious your compositions are. Why not include that material in this psychedelic live set? Better still – why did you not tour on your own then?

It was on my mind. Probably I thought I’d be on out on the road with Pink Floyd or David [Gilmour, Floyd’s guitarist]. I also got caught up in other things, such as Floyd’s history exhibition, which actually led me to my own tour, delving into our past. I came away with a guidebook in my hand with all the backstory and none of the playing, the actual music. That brought it home for me. How much of the architecture student is left in what you do? It’s a brilliant mix of technology and art, teaching you the ability to organize and be incredibly helpful while staging. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be in the music industry. The album you named your solo tour for is the changing of the guard Pink Floyd album – Syd was there, but leaving, with David there too – his replacement. What do you remember most about it? It’s one of my favorite albums in that it led to so many other things. There’s Roger’s song, “Jug Band Blues.” Such a long sad goodbye to Syd. Extraordinarily poignant. By the time Syd was going, we were at our wits’ end, so there’s a sense of hope and experimentation there too. Some of its more structured, organized moments were precursors to “Dark Side” and even “The Wall.” Quick history lesson. Pink Floyd’s first gig in Philadelphia was at our old JFK Stadium for Summer Festival in July 1968. Tell us, do you recall that show at all? OK. Hang on. It rained. The Who were headlining. We brought the gloom, I suppose, [considering] right [when we had] our set the heavens opened. Right after we got off the stage, we went to do radio on one of your FM stations with Keith Moon. It was absolute chaos. I’m sure there’s a tape of it somewhere. It was quite wild.

[Writers note: Some fact checking revealed that 1968 interview occurred on WMMR (93.3FM), and featured non-touring Pink Floyd band member Syd Barrett]. Fans have only ever witnessed your live act in stadiums and hockey arenas. The Met is neither. What is the key to bringing such an epic roar down a notch? For this music and the enjoyment of it, an intimate venue is more enjoyable. To put it bluntly, there’s always the question of how many tickets you can sell, but to be able to have a more direct relationship with the audience is very special, especially with this material. [Pink Floyd] did our first solo gig at a pub in London. I realized then the connection to the audience. Playing in a stadium is a fantastic feeling, even though 20 percent [of fans are] just there doing drugs. Such close proximity as this – people really concentrating on the music – it’s really something.

SEX, FROM PAGE 15 What explains the wildly different experiences with marijuana and sexual drive? Lock says there are a lot of variables: expected effects, dosages, personal physiological differences, method of ingestion and even relationship dynamics. “Far and away the most consistent and strongest predictor of both general sexual behavior and the subjective effects was enhancement expectancies or the expectation that using cannabis will make sex better,” Lock said. Lock is hoping for more research on the subject, especially psychophysiological data, which will expand on the currently available subjective reports. Lock raised several pertinent questions that need to be addressed: “Is there actually increased blood flow to the sexual organs while high? Are the pelvic contractions associated with orgasm actually stronger while high? Do different parts of the brain activate during sex while high?” The tools to do this kind of research exist, but their development “just hasn’t been done yet,” Lock explained. Sex and relationship coach Ashley Manta, who has published over 200 articles on sex and marijuana, agreed. “I would like to see people masturbating in an fMRI after consuming cannabis by inhalation, and another group masturbating in an fMRI after using a THC/CBD infused topical on their vulvas,” she said. “I want to see what cannabis is doing physiologically, not just what users self-report.” Manta started out as a sexual violence prevention professional, finding the work meaningful and helpful to her personal trauma healing, but eventually found herself burned out. She switched her focus to the more pleasurable aspects of sexuality, like body confidence and toys, and discovered medical marijuana after moving to California from Pennsylvania. “I tried a THC-infused genital oil from a company called Foria. I had experienced pain with penetration my entire adult life following my assaults, and this oil was the first product that ever allowed me to have penetrative sex without pain,” she explained. “I realized there weren’t really any sexuality professionals talking about sex and cannabis, and I decided to focus on that as my niche.” She founded the CannaSexual brand and is now the go-to sexuality educator on the topic. “I have found that cannabis, when mindfully chosen, can help address the things that get in the way of pleasure, connection and intimacy,” she said. Many of Manta’s coaching clients report getting stuck in their heads during sexual activity and that marijuana can help them be more present in the experience. “To be clear, I am not trying to convince anyone,” she clarified. “If cannabis is not your thing, for whatever reason, you can still have a

Sex and relationships coach Ashley Manta. fantastic, pleasurable sex life without it. However, if you’re curious about cannabis and sex and want to do it well, that’s where I come in.” How do users figure out where to begin? “This [requires] going on a personal fact-finding mission to determine which methods of consumption (inhalation, topicals, edibles, tinctures, transdermals, suppositories, etc.) are right for you and in what amounts,” Manta said. “I suggest everyone, when determining if a product is good for them for sex or not, try a bit of the new product and then masturbate. Notice what’s happening in your body and write it down so you have a trove of body-specific data.” Should users head to an indica or a sativa strain? “The indica/sativa distinction is essentially a myth at this point,” Manta said. “They are not reliable predictors of effects. If I had a dollar for every person who has said ‘indica, like in da couch,’ I would have enough money to fund an actual research study.” She points to findings by Dr. Ethan Russo, a board-certified neurologist and psychopharmacology researcher. In an article published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, he wrote, “There are biochemically distinct strains of Cannabis, but the sativa/indica distinction as commonly applied in the lay literature is total nonsense and an exercise in futility. One cannot in any way currently guess the biochemical content of a given Cannabis plant based on its height, branching, or leaf morphology.” Manta emphasizes that getting high isn’t a requirement for experiencing positive sexual effects. “You can relax in a cannabinoid-infused bath or use a THCA tincture—which won’t get you high because it’s a non-intoxicating form of THC...or you can use CBD-rich cannabis products or hemp-derived CBD.” For users who wish to experience a high while engaged in sexual activity with a partner, Manta offers a line of advice: “Make sure you negotiate before you medicate.”

Q: When I first started dating my girlfriend, I asked her about past boyfriends and she said she hadn’t met the right guy yet. After dating for nine years, I found out about a past boyfriend and looked through her e-mails. I found out she dated her married boss for three years. She broke up with me for looking and for judging her. I feel like she lied, and she thinks it was none of my business. We’ve been broken up for five months. She’s reached out, but I can’t get over my anger or disgust that she was someone’s mistress. Am I a bad person? – Still Angry And Disgusted

seeing as he was married and her boss and the relationship ended before you two even first laid thighs on each other nine years ago. And from where I’m sitting, SAAD, it looks like she still hasn’t met the right guy. To be perfectly frank, I don’t want to help you get over your anger and disgust—not that you asked me to help you get past those feelings. It kind of sounds like you wants your anger and disgust affirmed… and I’m going to go with that and affirm the shit out of those feelings: Stay angry! Stay disgusted! Not because those feeling are valid— they’re not—but because those feelings prevented you from taking your ex back when she reached out. She may not know it yet, but she’s better off without you, SAAD, and here’s hoping you stay angry and disgusted long enough for her to realize it.

by

JEWELL WILLIAMS Sheriff on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at

First District Plaza, 3801 Market Street, at 9:00 AM. (EST) Conditions of Sheriff’s Sale for JUDICIAL/FORECLOSURE SALE Ten percent of the highest bid for each property auctioned off shall be deposited in certified check, attorney’s check or money order with the Sheriff by each bidder when his bid is registered, provided that in no case shall less than Six Hundred Dollars ($600.00) be deposited, otherwise upon failure or refusal to make such deposit, the bidder shall lose all benefit of his bid and the property may be offered again and sold unless a second bid has been registered, then, the second highest bidder will take the property at the highest bid price. Additionally, where there is active bidding, the highest bidder, and the second highest bidder, if any must post the entire amount of the cost of the distribution policy for the property at the time of sale by certified check, attorney’s check or money order with the Sheriff. The Sheriff reserves the right to reject any certified check, attorney’s check or money order that on its face has an expired use date and is presented for payment of the deposit. The balance of the purchase money must be deposited in certified check, attorney’s check or money order together with a Deed poll for execution by the highest bidder to the Sheriff at his office within 30 days from the time of the sale. An extension of time for an additional 30 days may be granted at the discretion of the Sheriff upon receipt of written request from the buyer requesting the same, except when a second bidder has been duly registered. Also, if the first bidder does not complete settlement with the Sheriff within the thirty (30) day time limit and a second bid was registered at the sale, the second bidder shall be granted the same thirty (30) day time limit to make settlement with the Sheriff on his second bid. Thereafter, the Sheriff shall be at liberty to return the writ to court. A second bid must be registered on any property immediately after it is sold. The second bidder must present the same amount of deposit that the highest bidder delivers to the Sheriff at the sale. An extension of time under no circumstances will be granted or honored by the Sheriff whenever a second bid is registered on a property at the sale. The first bid or opening bid on each property shall be set by the City of Philadelphia. In no event will the successful bidder be allowed to settle on the property unless all the Sheriff’s costs are paid notwithstanding the final bid. The deposit by any bidder who fails to comply with the above conditions of sale shall be forfeited and the funds will

be applied to the Sheriff’s cost, then to any municipal claims that the City of Philadelphia has on the property. Finally, if a balance still remains, a Sheriff’s Distribution Policy will be ordered and the money will be distributed accordingly. No personal checks, drafts or promises to pay will be accepted in lieu of certified checks, attorney’s checks or money orders made payable to the Sheriff of Philadelphia County. The Sheriff reserves the right to grant further extensions of time to settle and further reserves the right to refuse bids from bidders who have failed to enter deposits on their bids, failed to make settlement, or make fraudulent bids, or any other behavior which causes disruption of the Sheriff Sale. Said bidders shall be so refused for the sale in which said behavior occurred and for said further period of time as the Sheriff in his discretion shall determine. The Sheriff will not acknowledge a deed poll to any individual or entity using an unregistered fictitious name and may, at his discretion, require proof of identity of the purchaser or the registration of fictitious names. The bid of an unregistered fictitious name shall be forfeited as if the bidder failed to meet the terms of sale. All bidders are advised to remain at the sale until after the last property is sold. The Sheriff reserves the right to re-sell any property at any time before the end of the sale, upon the successful bidders’ failure to tender the required deposit. The Sheriff reserves the right to postpone or stay the sale of any property in which the attorney on the writ has not appeared and is not present at the sale. Properties can be looked up by the BRT number – which should be cross checked with the address. PROSPECTIVE PURCHASERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DETERMINING THE NATURE, LOCATION, CONDITION AND BOUNDARIES OF THE PROPERTIES THEY SEEK TO PURCHASE. The BRT # refers to a unique number assigned by the City Bureau of Revision of Taxes to each property in the City for the purpose of assessing it for taxes. This number can be used to obtain descriptive information about the property from the BRT website.
