The number of years in an ongoing lease Temple University will have to sign with Lincoln Financial Field, the current venue for its football team. It’s been over two years since the University developed plans for a proposed $130 million stadium in the heart of the campus, but it has been met with stiff resistance as community members still want to know what’s the plan of attack when 35,000 people descend onto North Philadelphia, soak up public resources, trash it and leave it for residents to worry about. Since there’s no great answer, Temple will have to go back to the drawing board. Looks like North Philly 1, Temple 0.

Philadelphia’s housing and development boom is happening at such a rapidity that realty experts who track property values say that it’s almost impossible to keep up with the true value of not just a home – but a developing community. According to an Inquirer report, 1-in-13 mortgaged homes was “underwater,” in the Greater Philadelphia Region, essentially meaning that, based on location, some homeowners are paying close to a quarter more than their home’s true estimated market value. Scary thought.

Lord, have mercy A few weeks ago, we brought you the story of Michael Grant, better known to our city as “Philly Jesus.” According to a Philly Mag report, Grant is suing the city for taking away his First Amendment rights as he claims cops stopped him from preaching inside Christmas Village – yes, we are aware of the irony – and physically removed him from the premises. At the time of this report, the lawsuit hadn’t been made official since Grant, who is homeless, hasn’t been able to post the $400 filing fee, leaving a judge to decide whether to move forward without payment. Also irony? Praying for Jesus.

Jill Biden posted the Tweet in the aftermath, saying “you can take the girl out of Philly,” but it should be noted that Biden grew up in Willow Grove, which is 18 miles outside city limits. However, after examining this video a bit further, there’s no doubt being so close definitely rubbed off.

PIERCING, FROM PAGE 8 But he also really enjoys cultivating people’s ear piercings, helping them decide how to place a trio to the best effect or to design the second ear when someone comes in with one ear already pierced, Logger said. On a recent afternoon at Infinite, Logger was doing mostly nostril piercings. Alison Rutherford, 37, was there for a nostril and septum piercing. This was the third time she was having these piercings done, but as a contractor, she kept having to take out her jewelry and losing it. “I’m going to get a pouch,” she said. “Let me grab your gum from you,” Logger said, extending a latex-gloved hand. “I pierce penises for a living. I think I can handle your gum.” They laughed. But Rutherford sucked in hard and held her breath, her face contracted in pain, as Logger pulled the septum needle through, snapping the new jewelry into place. “Oh! I love it!” Rutherford exclaimed examining her new nostril and septum piercings in the mirror. Kate Tanita, 36, sat on a bench in the Infinite waiting room. She had only single ear piercings but had been thinking about getting a nostril piercing for a long time. That day, she had had brunch in Center City with a friend

and suddenly decided to hit up Infinite on her way home. Logger made a dot with a marker on her nose where he thought the piercing might go. “Too far back, and the piercing makes your nose look really big,” he said. When he pulled the needle through, Tanita, too, sucked air, comparing it to “stubbing your toe.” “But on your nose,” Logger said. Jade Schweitzer, 21, who works behind the counter at Infinite and has been apprenticing under Logger for the past year, said that piercing has always been something that she has been interested in. “It’s been a lot of hard work, but it’s going to be worth it,” Schweitzer, who wears 15 piercings but has had a total of 21, said about her apprenticeship. Logger estimates that he has been pierced more than 1,000 times, including his ritualistic encounters, though he has only 25 permanent ones. When asked how many tattoos he has, Logger answers, “One big one.” His earlobes hang down from large-gauge, weighted piercings he has had. “Piercers are not painters,” Logger said. “We don’t paint pictures. But there’s a whole art to the way paintings get hung on the wall. That’s what we do.”

She learned about coordinating large gatherings by participating in Obama’s Organizing for America in 2012, and she discovered her event-planning skills while working for the National Society of Black Engineer’s Temple University chapter. Then, Oyefusi began putting on a couple events a month at Green Soul, a large chic venue on Mount Vernon Street with a Southern-inspired but healthy menu. Now, she’s extending her influence. I want people to see that and get inspired.” It’s not about shaming black people into spending all their money at black-owned businesses, and the event isn’t closed to folks of other races, either. “It’s I BUY BLACK TOO,” Oyefusi said. “It’s not saying, ‘Oh, this is for black businesses or for black people.’ It’s about saying, ‘I’m willing to recognize the identity of a business, and that’s not going to deter me from patronizing them.’” “Some people hear black-owned business and they say, ‘OK, so it’s not for me. I can’t go there.’ It’s like, no, it’s for everyone,” she added. “Each of these locations have completely different identities.” Joie Kathos is buying in. The West Philly native is performing and curating the live entertainment at Haute Lounge. Kathos, who recently opened for rap legends Method Man and Redman, said she has come to dig food and bar crawls and is always intrigued by efforts to give back to the black community. “In my experience, I haven’t been to a lot of black-owned restaurants and bars,” she said. “When you’re looking for them, they’re a little hard to find. I guess there’s just not as much accessibility to them in publication.”

Kathos, who described her style as alternative soul hop, envisions a soundscape-style show at Haute, with performers taking turns on stage while taking advantage of the food and drink specials. WJYN 98.5 Uptown Radio, a community station that broadcasts from North Philly’s Uptown Theater, will be hosting the entertainment at Reef Lounge. Several of the station’s shows will be participating in a two-hour live broadcast. They will also be bringing acts to perform for the crowd. Mike James, Uptown Radio’s program director, said the station wanted to participate “for Medina and also for what she represents and supporting black-owned businesses.” Over at Green Soul, NoSpace Productions will be sponsoring a full lineup of R&B and soul music. Aaron Robinson, Oyefusi’s business partner, said a lot of work has been put into the event. They have been coordinating with photographers, videographers, performers, hosts and others to make sure everything is covered. “Even as we speak, I’m on my way to two meetings actually to meet with some of the lounge owners and just view the space,” he said last month during a phone interview. Oyefusi is pursuing a degree in construction technology and is scheduled to graduate in December. “My childhood dream was to be a civil engineer, which I’m still going to do,” she said. “But I also found that I have a knack for organizing and planning, and I love it.” For tickets, search for I BUY BLACK TOO on Facebook or eventbrite.

This is a shame, as the bar area hosted truly cool, noir-ish, live intimate jazz gigs, the outside gardens were (are) gorgeous, and the minimalist M’s décor was usually matched by bold chefs and their cuisines, some of whom we were introduced to there, such as M’s starter exec chef, David Katz. Woe. Much woe. Meek’s music When Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill isn’t talking about prison reform or dissing Nicki Minaj’s brother amid alleged child rape accusations (and she accusing Meek of beating women), Mill is actually making some of the best work of his career. Just one week after dropping the earnestly elegiac “Letter to Nipsey” for the late, great Mr. Hussle, Meek released the motivational, poetic “Believe” with Justin Timberlake before the weekend (“Meek is at the top of his game right now,” stated JT in a press note. “The process of creating with him in the studio to help him put what he experienced to music was incredible”). What isn’t too widely reported is that Mill will appear as a dirt biker (WITHOUT GETTING ARRESTED FOR IT EITHER – ha) in director Angel Manuel Soto’s new movie, “Charm City Kings.” The film got a quiet debut at Sundance, is released to the public April 10, has – with noa writing credit irus that’sfrom Barry Jenhen Yun iskins (the co-writwait to seeer and director of the Oscar-winning e came in“Moonlight”) and he troupefeatures Meek as hina, anda character named ians haveBlax who is part hen Yun’sof the Midnight zed FalunClique, a famed land whatBaltimore dirt-bik, nor haveer gang. eople from ‘Servant’ swap HAT mes- Speaking of filming with Philly flavor, there is a ly roman-rumor that during ar at Thethis, the upcomWikimedia Commons 15 years, ing second season Morris willof spooky, localate eventsly-based director/producer M. for “Servant”’s second season, so the more the merrier. Taylor’s move Perhaps lost in the hubbub of all things Oscar and Academy Awards-related (and yay, “Parasite” despite my sadness over the locally-tinged “Irishman” not winning a thing), was the fact that Pennsylvania’s own Taylor Swift just moved her much-valued publishing dealings to the ubiquitous Universal Music Publishing Group with a new pact. Why is this a big deal? Because Universal Music Publishing is run by – Philadelphia Weekly readers should know this as I featured her in these pages last year – Cherry Hill native Jody Gerson, the Chairperson/CEO of UMPG. “We are honored to welcome Taylor Swift to UMPG,” said Gerson in a statement. “Using her power and voice to create a better world, Taylor’s honest and brave songwriting continues to be an inspiration to countless fans. We look forward to further amplifying Taylor’s voice and songs across the globe.” Another Barcade Sure, it’s exciting that Fishtown’s Barcade is doing a second location in Center City at 1210 Chestnut next to Porta. But, if you’re older than your typical Philly millennial, you’ll recall that Chestnut Street, between 15th and 18th streets, was once home to several arcade game locations that grew fabulously more dingy as time went on. And before you say, “well, they didn’t have a bar?” I will counter with the fact that EVERYONE WAS DRINKING there while playing PacMan and pinball – lots of Sloe gin and Mad Dog, but they were drinking. Now, if Chestnut Street would only erect a new Zounds – the gilded house of quadrophonic sound – that block would truly be cooking.

“Maybe the mayor is not so much of an imaginative diner ... but at least he’s pushing the conversation in the right direction.”

Having gone through some challenging events over the past two years, Boyer wanted to process his struggles through songwriting. He felt compelled to make feel-good songs about self-value, self-discovery, and about being betrayed and moving on. When Boyer and Olsen began writing new songs in January 2017, what emerged was “this messy, glitchy sound,” Boyer says, adding that a 1958 Silvertone guitar bought from a garage sale is played on nearly every song, and gave the music what the album’s producer Tim Pagnotta (WALK THE MOON, Neon Trees) called a “ratty, acoustic feel.” PW recently caught up with Boyer to talk about the band and its upcoming show in Philly. Describe your first five years together as a band. Is the experience everything you thought it would be? Mostly, no. The past years have been great, but filled with so many unexpected twists and turns. It’s hard to predict anything but, overall, it’s been a great time. Back in the day, artists were very dependent on radio to get their music to their fans. Social media and the internet have changed all of that. Talk a little about how the growth of technology and online options have helped you reach and interact with your fans. Radio is still very influential today, but definitely not the only outlet. Social media can be a blessing and a curse, for sure. Back in the day, you would only ever see your favorite band if they were in a magazine or in a music video or if you went to see them live. So physically SEEING the band was al-

ways amazing. Now, you can see the band anytime 24/7 anywhere. And there can be a ton of pressure to have to be more present on social media than you really want to be just to keep people interested. But on the flipside, we can actually talk to our fans at any time. We can connect with them in different ways. And we can be closer to our fan base which can help us and help them. “Happy Pills” back in 2016 proved to be a breakthrough for you on the charts. How did the success of that song change the path of Weathers? Did it influence the type of music you want to make today? Our music is always changing and evolving. The success of one song doesn’t change that. We are young and still growing up and our music will grow with us. But that song definitely has made us known and expanded our reach which is cool. What can your Philly fans expect to see at your show at World Cafe Live on Feb. 15? New music. And a fun and emotional experience. What’s next for Weathers? Where do you see yourselves five years from now? We are releasing lots of new music this year. There’s plenty to look forward to, and we will be touring nonstop as well. Hopefully in years to come, we will be known as a band that’s more than our music. I think we already are to our fans now, but hopefully that will keep growing. Weathers | Saturday, Feb. 15, 8 pm. $25-$75. World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St. Tickets and info: worldcafelive.com.

VOICES

OF OUR

CITY

It shouldn’t pay to pollute Simply taking a breath shouldn’t put your health at risk. Unfortunately, this is the case for many residents across the state of Pennsylvania. PennEnvironment’s recent report, “Trouble in the Air,” found that almost 30 cities in the state experienced unhealthy air days in 2018. Air pollution can cause detriments to our health in many ways, from increasing hospitalizations for respiratory issues to increasing the likelihood of cancer. As a resident of this state, I shouldn’t have to worry that breathing the air could be putting my health and future at risk. Those most responsible for this air pollution are fossil fuel-burning industries that release toxic pollutants and contribute both

to our poor air quality and climate change. We know that climate change will only worsen the quality of our air, further putting ourselves and future generations at risk. We already have the tools to combat this problem: reduce our reliance on fossil fuels while regulating existing polluters. That’s why I want to thank State Sen. Katie J. Muth for proposing Senate Bill 967 to hold these companies accountable. The bill would both increase fines to industry polluters as well as require them to create a public notification plan so communities are not left in the dark about their public health concerns. I call on my state senator, Art Haywood, to co-sponsor Muth’s bill because everyone deserves the right to clean air.

THE SHOUT OUT

– Eve Lukens-Day | Philadelphia

Too many people, not enough land America’s population is soaring. Our nation currently houses 330 million people. And each year, that number grows by 2 million. By 2065, more than 440 million people may call the United States home. This explosive growth threatens everything Americans hold dear, including our open spaces, pristine air and water, and abundant wildlife. Much of the natural landscape around us is being subdivided and paved over. Farms are turning into shopping centers. Meadows are giving way to housing developments. Fortunately, two senators – Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Tom Udall (D-NM) – recently introduced a resolution that could help conserve the environment. Senate Resolution 32, otherwise known as the “30 by 30” resolution, urges the federal government to “establish a national goal of conserving at least 30 percent of the land and ocean of the United States by 2030.” This resolution couldn’t have come at a better time. America loses 1.5 million acres of natural land per year. Development has destroyed half of our wetlands. More than 12,000 plant and animal species are currently at risk of extinction. Our oceans have seen dramatic reductions in coral reefs, mangroves, and fish. And nearly a third of North American birds have disappeared since 1970. Overdevelopment exacerbates the effects of climate change by pushing communities into floodplains and fire-prone areas. If we don’t act now, the adverse consequences of warm-

ing – including more frequent and intense wildfires, storms, and floods – will ravage the United States in the future. To combat this looming catastrophe, the resolution calls for a cooperative conservation effort between the federal government, states, local communities, Native American tribes, and private landowners. That’s the right approach – we are all in this together, and we all have to work together to address the challenge of overdevelopment. Overall, the United States adds enough people to create a new Los Angeles County – about 10 million people – every few years. Pew Research predicts that America will add another 25 million people by 2030. In other words, many open spaces will transform into endless urban sprawl. Combating overpopulation and overdevelopment is the single best way to protect the environment. Globally, the human population is predicted to increase from 7.7 billion currently to 8.6 billion by 2030 and 9.8 billion by 2050. Unless we act now, the resulting voracious demand for land and natural resources will likely result in a sixth mass extinction of plants and animals. Given the sheer political chaos we see in Washington, D.C., every single day, it’s not just refreshing, but inspiring, seeing a vision put forward like Senate Resolution 32. It’s time for all environmentalists to voice their support for the effort.

We got PuNK'd Our Feb. 6 cover story entitled "Think You’re Punk?" set off a rage in Philly's rich punk community. The following is a sampling of the scores of reactions we received. To the ones not mentioned here, know that we've read them all, even if we didn't give you the floor. I’m writing to urge you to take down your recent article “Think You’re Punk?” by G.D. Hoffman. It would be in your best interest to listen to, trust and respect the concerns of your readers. This article is extremely harmful to the individual mentioned who had their privacy invaded without consent. This kind of treatment is greatly unnecessary and ultimately “not very punk.” This article offended myself and many community members who are actually involved in this music community. It also put a black family’s livelihood at risk along with saying offensive remarks about a trans person in our community, misgendering them and saying embarrassing and incorrect things about them and their life. Take down the article immediately, please, and I would say fire your terrible writer. The article is not only offensive but it’s extremely poorly written. While I recognize this does not reflect the opinion of Philadelphia Weekly, I do think that, as a member of a close-knit community that promotes inclusivity and cultivation of art that supercedes the guise of capital and exploitation, the publishing of this article is a ridiculous critique of a community your writer has no involvement with. Hello, I am writing in regards to an article recently published by Philadelphia Weekly. The article (or “opinion” piece) written by GD Hoffman is harassment of this man’s neighbor. I cannot understand why your magazine would condone this style of harassment, over (from my understanding) a letter being left by his neighbor asking him to respect the quiet hours of their apartment. Furthermore, Mr. Hoffman has put the livelihood of a local working-class Black-owned and run venue at stake. This family has lived and worked longer in the neighborhood than Mr. Hoffman (an LA transplant), and it baffles me why you would put a business run by long term local residents at stake. You gave money to support bullying. This article is juvenile and y’all should be ashamed

So much beautiful, powerful art is being created in Philly and you chose the most negative, inconsequential spoiled brat to write an op-ed about how dissatisfied he is with his own life? Run-of-the-mill bullshit opinion, stir up some shit about nothing because that aging “punk” resents younger people for being more fun than he probably ever was. It seems like a flaccid attempt to grab your print media’s attention without actually engaging anyone. You should be more careful about trying to attract young readers (based on the articles you push that read like 2015 facebook ads, you have no young staff).

Dive into McGlinchey’s, and be sure to bring your cigs and cash | Page 12 of yourselves. Take it down. Please REMOVE the opinion article “think you are punk?” Publishing very specific details about an underground diy venue is NOT OK. Publishing very specific details about a person that you clearly know nothing about is NOT OK! In regard to the opinion piece “think you’re punk,” I understand that the nature of an oped (or journal entry, in this case) is grounds for a lot of disagreement, so I will hold back on criticizing the piece in those terms. But where the author fails is more so in providing identi-

fying information about both a DIY venue that could easily get found by the police, who will inevitably shut it down, and their neighbor. I realize that as of today, the article has been edited to remove the name of the venue and the hints at its location, but the writer says really judgmental and negative things about their neighbor and identifying information. This is exactly the type of perspective-less garbage that is killing print media in Philadelphia. You let that washed up LA dropout nightmare share his stupid fucking opinion, and I hope you reap the consequences of that.

I’m writing to express the immense bad taste in my mouth left after reading your poorly written, vague, with no actual point cover article. Number one, the main issue is it discloses personal information about a person and a business that should not be given so casually to the public. Profiling and disclosing this information have jeopardized their safety and, in the case of the venue, jeopardizes the livelihood of a black local family. Additionally, this article is horribly written, states NOTHING, and in such an important political and social time, there were no other articles you could headline with? I demand this article be taken down, that your company pull all the papers off stands, and that you literally get some sort of accountability and educational assistance for your staff, if you all think this is the tier of journalism that is acceptable. This article is literally the least “punk” thing. I understand that this is an opinion piece, so there is plenty of room for disagreement. However the author’s descriptions of their neighbor are blatant harassment. The author also went on to identify spaces where POC and at risk trans community members gather, this would allow people who wish to harm or target this community knowledge of these spaces. Philadelphia Weekly should work to protect the citizens of Philadelphia not publish something that makes fun of the artistic and alternative members of our community.

Part of being a lesbian, being a woman, is also cultural and societal. It’s not simply an identity. Living in the world as a woman matters. A biological male who presents as a man and has sex only with women will never know what it’s like to be treated as a woman or a lesbian. He can identify however he likes, of course, but he will be perceived as a straight man who’s fetishizing queer women.” Q: I’m in my late 20s and genderfluid. I have a male physique, but at times I feel more feminine. I suddenly can’t shake the desire to have more feminine breasts. I’ve been looking at women with C or D cups and wishing I had boobs that big. I’ve spent time looking into breast enhancement, but I live in the Midwest. It’s not as bad as the South, but there are still plenty of people who believe violating gender norms is a sin. I guess I don’t know what I’m trying to ask other than whether this is normal. – Bro Obsessed Over Bust Size It’s not normal – in the literal, non-pejorative sense – for an “assigned male at birth” person who presents as male to want to slap large boobs on his otherwise male-presenting physique. But so what? If you’re worried about how your boobs will be received there in the Midwest, perhaps you could get yourself a pair of what drag queens call “chicken cutlets,” i.e., silicone breasts enhancers that tuck into a bra, and try wearing them out. For the record, kids, I’m not equating being genderfluid with drag, even though many drag queens (but not all) identify as genderfluid and many genderfluid people (but not all) do drag. (I never get tired of tap-dancing my way through this minefield.) But back when I was doing drag, BOOBS, a pair of chicken cutlets artfully placed under my pecs created a pretty realistic looking set of big ol’ titties. Think of chicken cutlets as a temporary, nonsurgical breast-enhancement option – to test the locals as well as your desire to have breasts.

“If you’re worried about how your boobs will be received there in the Midwest, perhaps you could get yourself a pair of what drag queens call ‘chicken cutlets,’ i.e., silicone breasts enhancers that tuck into a bra, and try wearing them out.”
