#pbw2014 philly beer week 2014

Welcome to the 7th Annual Philly Beer Week. While there have been some big changes this year, the important things will stay the same. There are still a huge number of events and many exciting new beers to discover. Most importantly, you will still be contributing to the culture of craft beer by venturing out to try a new brew. We know you’ll need some help figuring out how to find the next great beer. That’s why we put together this easy-to-carry guide. It’s also why we have a kick-ass app for Android and iPhone. Don’t forget to check our website the whole year round for event listings. Great beer doesn’t happen just ten days of the year! Philly Beer Week, Inc. is a 501(c)6 non-profit organization dedicated to craft beer culture, both locally and beyond. Opening Tap is our major fundraiser, so be sure to get your tickets now. It WILL sell out. Also be sure to drop by our Official Beer Garden at the Shambles at Head House Square. Meet up with friends, plan your attack and sample some terrific beers. Wrap up Philly Beer Week at our official Kick the Last Keg BBQ at Keating’s River Grill on Delaware Avenue.

FEATURED BEERS FEATURED BEERS PHILLY BEER WEEK 2014

Philly Beer Collabs: Free Will and Full Pint of Pittsburgh are hard at work on a mango habanero IPA. Free Will is also collaborating with Michael of Philly Philms on a dry Irish Stout. Nodding Head’s Gordon Grubb and Fat Head’s Matt Cole will be brewing something hoppy. It’s still a secret, but look for it on the Nodding Head taps during Philly Beer Week. 2nd Street Pils by William Reed and Brian O’Reilly of Sly Fox have begun their sixth collaboration! Saaz hopped and dry hopped in the fermentor. 100 percent German pils malt creates a clean background for the Nobel hops to shine through.

THREE FAVORITES

Eric San Juan, Philadelphia Weekly Founder’s - Breakfast Stout 8.3% abv The style description is a mouthful, but the interplay of bold coffee and rich chocolate in this glass of liquid velvet makes every taste one worth savoring.

Hanssens - Oude Gueuze 6% abv No other gueuze manages to be affordable and widely available while also delivering such wonderful, lemon-kissed funk and puckering sourness.

Firestone Walker – Parabola 13% abv You can’t throw a pint glass without hitting a bourbon-barrel-aged stout these days, but few can match Firestone’s Russian Imperial, which is swimming with notes of tobacco, bitter chocolate, and contentment.

Daryl and Mindi Hirsch of www.2foodtrippers.com Unibroue - La Fin du Monde 9% abv This Belgian-style tripel is what we’ll be drinking at the end of the world. This beer is sweet and spicy, with hints of coriander and orange peel. Made in Quebec.

Ommegang – Hennepin 7.7% abv Ommegang’s farmhouse saison is a perfect beer to sip on its own or enjoy with a meal. Inspired by Belgium but made in Cooperstown, this beer is a staple in our refrigerator. 2 10

Dogfish Head - Raison D’Etre 8% abv

Danya Henninger, Food and beer writer and photographer Zagat.com Philadelphia local editor and ImagicDigital.com partner

Troegs - Perpetual IPA 7.5% abv Leave it to John Troegner to figure out how to corral five kinds of hops and three types of malt into a golden, sublimely balanced brew with hop flavor that unfurls with smooth distinction and puts lesser IPAs to shame.

Lancaster Brewing - Milk Stout 5.3% abv No matter how many times you’ve sipped this classic English stout, it’s always a pleasant surprise that something so velvety black in appearance drinks so easily, with a touch of startling sweetness that turns dryly effervescent by the finish.

Butternuts - Porkslap Pale Ale 4.3% abv Came for the label, stayed for the taste of this spicy American pale ale that combines light notes of citrus, ginger, hops and malt into a refreshing sip that’s nearly as good straight from the can as poured into a glass.

OTHER FEATURED BEERS

River Horse - Summer Blonde 4.5% abv An easily drinkable, refreshing summer ale with splashes of citrus complimented by sweet malt. Great for the backyard hangout or lounging at a beer garden.

Sly Fox – Helles Golden Lager 4.6% abv The perfect year-round beer. It’s crisp and not overly hoppy, with layers of flavor notes that reach from coppery to sweet. You’ll definitely want another because it goes down so easy. Best enjoyed from a can.

Lancaster Kölsch German Style Ale 4.8% abv This Gold Medal Winning German style Kölsch pays homage to the traditional beer of Cologne. Extended cold aging for 45 days, delivers clean, floral hop notes and smooth, mellow malt character. Crisp, flavorful and refreshing. A canned German-style Kölsch that is a perfect brew for any occasion. PHILadELPHIaWEEKLY.com | phillybeerweek.org philadelphiaweekly.com PHILLYBEERWEEK.oRg

The Headhouse/Shambles is an interesting aspect of the American marketplace. Built around 1745, these “sheds” and “Headhouses” were an essential place for merchants to meet in the same location.
