he most astonishing thing about Kate Nyx’s new album, Sage & Silver Bullets, isn’t the dark, throaty voice she pours into your ears on each track. It’s not the richly textured soundscape of acoustic and electric guitars, both edgy and intimately cozy at the same time; it’s not the snappy drum line that skips and shuffles through the songs one by one, courtesy of Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls and Violent Femmes; and it’s not even the lyricism of Nyx’s bird-flipping balladry on great breakup anthems like the sweetly pissed-off “Black Sky Lullaby.” No, the most astonishing thing is the utter tsunami crash of sheer, visceral presence with which the whole thing hits you—with which you realize that stuff has just gotten seriously real here. This is not a good album by a local musician: Sage & Silver Bullets is a great album by a fiery, 24-yearold explosion in human form who’s ready to be a major recording artist. Because any jerk can say they’re making a record that pulls together a century’s worth of American musical threads from Johnny Cash to Ani DiFranco to Hedwig and the Angry Inch, but it takes a rare talent to actually do that and end up with an instantly unforgettable ten roots-pop songs you’ll play over and over and over, singing and dancing and occasionally yelling along. Which, of course, poses the question: Who the hell is Kate Nyx, and where did she come from? Amazingly, it was only a year and a half ago that the Lancaster County-born, Phillybased singer-songwriter and sometime
burlesque performer—who’s been writing and recording songs since she was 14, and who previously went by the stage name Hayley Jane, which she’d taken before realizing there was already a performer with the same name—declared herself ready to give up music forever. “I was tired and mad,” she says. “I’d been working so hard for so long”—yet in Philly and elsewhere, she found it easier to get a crowd to turn out for a burlesque show than for an indie songwriter. So, for about a year, she threw herself into the saucy ribaldry of the retro striptease scene. But though she respected the art form, she realized that the creative satisfaction it brought her just wasn’t the same. “I started to feel like people thought I had nothing to offer society but what I looked like,” she says. “I had to do something different.” Last fall, she decided the something would be an album. A big one. That meant teaming up with local musician/producer Bright Kelly, who helped Nyx render her raw songs in a lush southern-Gothic atmosphere; bringing in Viglione, one of her musical heroes, to lay down the drums; and Kickstarting the funding of the whole shebang. The creative payoff? Huge. Filtering Nyx’s Shakespearean view of heartache through what she calls a “PA redneck” lens, Sage & Silver Bullets is a record that belongs on World Cafe, on TV soundtracks, in earbuds everywhere. Hey, world—you listening? n

ow that winter’s firmly in the rearview mirror, it’s time to awaken your hibernating senses. Here’s one way: Breathe in the aromas of fresh-baked breads and savor the juicy sweetness of fruit straight from the orchard at this weekend’s Philly Farm & Food Fest. Now marking its fourth year, the annual celebration of local food producers has grown dramatically in popularity, as well as in what it has to offer: Over 150 unique exhibitors—regional farmers, bakers and more—will be on hand and ready to satisfy any craving, whether for handmade nut butters, distinctive cheeses, artisanal pickles or gourmet sweets. An abundance of organic meats, specialty goods and restricted-diet options will be available, too. Since 2012, when Fair Food Philly and the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture created the day-long festival to effectively provide a way for small businesses to reach a larger and more varied customer base, the PFFF has doubled as a fundraiser, with proceeds going toward the founders’ nonprofit pro-

This year, the fest is taking it to the next level, presenting what workshop organizers have dubbed “classroom takeovers,” where experts will demonstrate cooking methods, farm practices and homesteading. Attendees can learn how to prepare delectable meats at the Butcher’s Block, then discover the rewards of maintaining a sustainable lifestyle in one of the Urban Homesteading seminars. There will also be book signings, quick courses led by assorted cookbook authors, and kids’ education sessions—which is especially cool since children under 12 get in free. Still want more? SAISONS FOR SPRING
1 2
21st Amendment Sneak Attack. Now that
the weather has finally turned and it looks to be mostly sunny days ahead, the saison is going to become the style of choice for many craft beer lovers. No surprise there; There’s something about the saison that feels like bright spring days. 21st Amendment has a huge, frothy white head and potent aromas of thick, musky yeast. Touches of grain, grass and spice shoot through the taste, along with a hint of lemon zest, but what dominates is rich, sourdough-like breadiness. Try it at Time, Side Bar or City Tap House Logan.
Victory Helios. The Belgian-style farmhouse
ale is the same thing as a saison, essentially—and when one’s great, it’s spectacular. Take Helios, by local favorites Victory. Barely-there pepper spice adds a bit of fun to the lemony, grassy goodness in every sip. It’s bright and herbal, like the wind blowing across a blooming field, with a pleasantly bready backbone to support the airy taste. A little bit of juicy citrus and a dry finish rounds things out and wraps up one of the finest farmhouse ales in the Northeast. On draft now at Standard Tap, Alla Spina, Jerry’s Bar and others.

Southhampton Biere de Mars. The Biere
8 PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY | april 8 - 15 , 2015 | Philadelphiaweekly.com
de Garde is a close cousin to the saison/farmhouse ale family of beers—in this case, a French variant that often leans a little closer to amber ales than saisons do. Each spring, New York’s Southhampton makes a damn fine one that is worth seeking out. Many of the characteristics you expect in a saison are here—a fluffy white head, hints of pepper spice, herbal grassiness and so on—but so is a more pronounced banana aroma (thanks to the yeast) and some sweet caramel and toffee in the malts, along with a hint of honeyed alcohol in the finish. Pair this with a hearty meal for some good springtime eating. Check it out at Heritage and The Goat’s Beard.
4
Sly Fox Saison Vos. Saisons may be a traditional Belgian style, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some great ones being produced right here in Pennsylvania, too. Brewed over in Pottstown by the folks at Sly Fox, Saison Vos is a slightly Americanized take on this delicious springtime beer. Slightly amber, with its pronounced malt character balanced by clove spices, grassy hops, brisk carbonation and a mildly tart finish, Saison Vos also showcases more pronounced bitterness than you might be used to in the style—but the aforementioned tartness keeps this in check. Make your way over to The Bards to try it on draft, or look for a bottle at your local shop.
5
Firestone Walker Opal. Opal is a fairly
traditional saison: Lemony citrus and peppery spice are up front and present, just as you’d expect, with some pleasant funkiness adding a bit of adventure to every sip. What really sets it apart are undertones of sauvignon blanc wine, which adds some fruitiness that begs to be paired with a nice cheese. (No Whiz, please.) The carbonation is robust, which only serves to enhance the mildly sour tang in the finish. Get your spring started with Opal at The Memphis Taproom, Race Street Cafe, Kite & Key and other locations. | ERIC SAN JUAN

Street to Table
The food’s overflowing in Manayunk as the neighborhood’s annual StrEAT Festival rolls right into its Restaurant Week. BY BRIAN FREEDMAN
T
he last time I made my way through the entirety of Manayunk’s Main Street, I was around 20 miles into running my first marathon and in the midst of vivid fantasies about stopping at every restaurant along the way to eat every item on their menus. So you might say I’ve been looking forward to Manayunk’s annual StrEAT Food Festival and Restaurant Week since that moment. Now, four and a half months later, the time has finally come. On April 12, rain or shine—or, after the winter we had, even if three more feet of snow spontaneously fall the night before—more than 50 food trucks will descend upon the ‘Yunk and provide visitors with a chance to eat their body weight in crepes (Bonjour Creperie), pork (Phoebe’s Bar-B-Q, Sum Pig, The Whirly Pig, Oink and Moo, Nick Merlino’s Pig Roast and more), tacos (Taco Mondo, Smokin Tacos, Poi Dog Snack Shop) and an infinite range of others. Of course, the StrEAT Festival isn’t only about overindulging. There’s also a farm stand with a special focus on strawberries, shops setting up stands along the street and a children’s area called Recess that includes face painting, a moon bounce and other activities guaranteed to exhaust the kids enough that they just may sleep through the night afterward. And up on Cotton Street is a beer garden—just make sure you don’t forget the kids in the moon bounce while you’re sampling all of the great craft brews there. Even traffic has to take a back seat to the festivities. Shannon Geddes, public relations and events coordinator for the Manayunk Development Corporation, notes that the “street closure enhances that festival experience by allowing there to be more vendors and trucks.” It also means that attendees will be able to focus on important things, like stuffing their faces with as much great truck-food as possible and minimize their focus on annoyances like passing cars. After all of that, and once you’ve taken a day or two to recover, you’ll have Manayunk Restaurant Week to look forward to. Actually, though, that’s not entirely correct: It’s more like Manayunk Restaurant (Two) Weeks, since it runs from April 13th to the 24th. Regardless, it’s a fantastic opportunity to explore all the neighborhood’s food renaissance has to offer. Standouts like Taqueria Feliz, for example, have led the way toward a Manayunk that’s far more interesting and occasionally challenging than once was. Taqueria will be offering a three-course, $15 Restaurant Week menu that includes items as diverse as baby kale salad, tostada de chorizo, pork carnitas tacos, squash tacos, and (yes) rice pudding with strawberries. Beast & Ale will also be getting in on the $15 action, so this is a great excuse to tuck into an order of pick-

led cherry tomatoes, followed by their excellent Hot Roast Beast Sandwich. For $25, you can check out the beautiful threecourse menus at the Couch Tomato Cafe and the Tomato Bistro, the latter of which is offering up a macand-cheese-and-bacon starter that I would have killed for during that marathon. At the $35 level, you can savor the menus at Jake’s, Derek’s and more. I’ll personally be hitting up Derek’s for some wood oven-roasted brussels sprouts with a balsamic glaze and house-smoked bacon, a grilled flank steak, and a pretzel-crusted milk chocolate tart. Derek Davis, chef and owner, is even going one step further. He elaborated in an email that “the best part of Restaurant Week is that we get to put our best foot forward, give good value to new and existing customers and hopefully make some new friends along the way. I’m always disappointed in the offerings for other [restaurant] weeks so I decided to offer 4 courses and give the folks a little bonus!” The irony of all of this great eating, of course, is that by the time it’s over with, I may have to run another 26 miles for purely medical reasons. I hope I overindulge enough to necessitate it. That, at least, is my goal. n

Philadelphia- According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make reasonable
You’ll be sold at the first bite of these playful new tapas, a direct kick in the standard’s shins by way of beloved chef Nick Farina. Medium rare Kobe beef slivers sit nestled atop deep-fried, panko-crusted Manchego cheese chunks and lemon-vinaigrette dressed arugula, crowned with a chipotle aioli and pickled onions, just begging to be devoured by hand. It’s almost too pretty to eat, but c’mon—eat it you will. Pair this plate with the almost-too-tasty Winter Spice Margarita, with its subtle tang of cinnamon thyme-infused tequila, and baby, you’ve got plenty to smile about. Kornél Mundruczó’s White God is far from your run-of-the-mill, feel-good fable about a cute canine. By Genevieve Valentine

young girl pedals her bike desperately through a city’s empty streets. She passes abandoned cars, the wind around her the only sound. Suddenly, the soundtrack swells like the end of the world as dogs appear. They’re pouring around a corner, dozens of every breed, racing as fast as their legs can carry them, and every last one of them headed right for her. She glances behind her. She hesitates. Then she races for her life. It’s a stunning image, the reverse of everything we’ve been taught about movies that feature a young girl and her dog, and White God knows it. And though the movie uses it twice, there’s enough depth of context between the matching experiences for that sudden rush of animals to be even more ominous than it seemed in those first surreal moments. The first time, we read the girl’s hesitation as confusion, overwhelmed with something so strange. The second time, we recognize that it’s terror. With White God, Kornél Mundruczó constructs a fable about man’s best friend. Young Lili’s forced by her gruff father to give up her beloved mutt Hagen, who ends up on a Dickensian journey through human cruelty. But the fable peels back to reveal something darker and less easily satisfying, a story about the nature of a wild thing and at what point it’s too late to forgive. It’s a movie that borrows action-movie clichés with a straight face—Hagen befriends a scruffy terrier with a sharp attitude, and the chase scenes carry the sort of tension the Bourne franchise would appreciate—but makes sure the violence is visceral. And as Hagen encounters humanity, ranging from the desperate to the evil, White God commits to the idea that in a revenge myth, the hero must be allowed to seek revenge. Hagen (played by what have to be two of the most expressive dogs ever to grace the silver screen) and Lili (Zsófia Psotta) spend most of the movie apart, and while Hagen’s at the whim of the cruelest human to ever put hands on him, Lili’s downward spiral is a reminder that her double betrayal of Hagen has also killed something in her. When she and Hagen meet again, they’re both
very different animals, and it’s perhaps one of the movie’s most masterful beats that their reunion is uneasy. It’s as gripping as it is grim, and it surprises me not at all that it received such plaudits at Cannes. But Cannes didn’t just reward the movie; it rewarded the dogs. There’s a long and adorable history of dogs on screen. Ever since Scraps schemed for Charlie Chaplin in 1918’s A Dog’s Life, man’s best friend— whether Lassie or Hooch, Shiloh or Petey, even Cujo if you’re being cynical— has been as much a narrative winner as a technical challenge. Though safeguards are meant to be in place, not every animal is safe. The Adventures of Milo & Otis, that late ‘80s pugand-kitten kids’ adventure, was haunted by allegations of animal abuse, some captured onscreen and others suspected—which, if true, mean the filmmakers killed 20 kittens while making the movie. But even in the best cases, the effort that goes into dog footage can be staggering. OK Go’s “White Knuckles” music video is three minutes of dog tricks in front of a fixed camera. It’s accompanied by a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the process: 120-plus takes. It sounds like punishment, except the dogs are having such a great time. And I’ll admit, during some of the darkest moments of White God, I was consoled that no matter what indignities Hagen was suffering onscreen, the dogs involved seemed enthusiastically game. Skillful editing leaves a suggestion of horrific violence, but the dogs themselves seemed absent the tension of Milo & Otis’ pug puppies. In some ways, though, it’s unfair to compare White Dog to more straightforward “dog movies.” Most of them use dogs as a reflection of, or foil to, a human companion, an anthropomorphic stand-in of unconditional love whose life is therefore more precious than those of their human counterparts. In White Dog, however, dogs are wholly themselves, and their lives fragile. It’s a movie that separates its dogs from human obligation, and instead succeeds in asking us: If the dogs descended, would they be looking for you? n

Diving even deeper The rock band formerly known as Divers prepares to unveil their new name and a new album. bY bILL cHENEvERT
F
or the first five years Emily Zeitlyn wielded her vocal cords as a musical instrument, she used them softly. “I think I was scared of my own voice,” she remembers with a wide-eyed smile. Then she had a baby—and both the experience of natural childbirth and the following months of new motherhood opened her eyes to the other ways her singing might be shaped, molded and, well, amplified. Now Zeitlyn’s rock band, the Philly outfit formerly known as Divers—more on that in a minute—are about to release their crowdfunded debut LP, Holding Bodies, and she’s not holding back anymore. The group’s musical energy is raw and palpable, and it ended up translating beautifully from the stage to the studio—something her bandmate and guitarist Ross Bellenoit was hoping for. “It’s exactly what we sound like live,” says Bellenoit, a producer who hawks Philly bands for Turtle Studios. And the past three years that Divers spent gigging, Bellenoit says, mean they’ve assembled a nice collection of original material, stuff they were more than ready to throw down in the studio for Holding Bodies. Now, the challenge before them isn’t just getting the record out in front of listeners—it’s also the fact that a couple weeks ago, they discovered there’s another band named Divers, too: a Portland, Ore.-based rock band with a sound not too distant from Zeitlyn’s crew. Even crazier: The other Divers are scheduled to play a show in Philly this Saturday, the same night that the big Holding Bodies record release show will be rocking Johnny Brenda’s. There’s no inter-band warfare, Zeitlyn says: “We’re lovers, not fighters, and it seems like they are, too.” Still, the local quartet, with Todd Erk on bass and Tom Bendel on drums, are hashing out a new name, and they plan to announce it at the release party. The group say they don’t really talk too consciously about their own style: “We kind of have our own individual worlds of music, and we let those influences happen when the four of us get together,” Bellenoit says. Pressed to cite bands they listen to in the tour van, the guitarist says he’s force-fed Emily some Nick Lowe (“Now I’m super into it, especially that super-croony ‘50s vibe”), and that she
didn’t particularly take to his chronological presentation of the Ron Sexmith ouevre. One band whose spirit they did hope to bottle in the studio, though, was the Rolling Stones during the excess days of Aftermath and the records that pulled the Stones into the ‘70s. If there’s chemistry between the four musicians on stage, there should be: Ross and Todd have been playing together for the past dozen years, plus the boys all support Birdie Busch. Zeitlyn, who used to play with a band called The Weeds, admits she didn’t always enjoy herself on stage—it used to be a more tortuous experience for her, she says, one she’s sure Ross deserves “at least a cookie for enduring. Still, she agrees with something you hope every budding local music star would say: “I have fun at every show,” she grins, “The only reason I do this is for the joy of it. It’s literally the only reason.”

Why we love stupid TV Apparently, stupid rings true to us. And that’s not necessarily so bad.
T
Much like how nutritionally-bereft comfort foods sound good after a physically or emotionally exhausting day, people tune into Kardashian schlock and Two and a Half Men when they have no energy left for learning or feeling. A Stanford University study asked half of participants to remember a seven-digit number, then walk down a hall to recite it and the other half of participants to just walk down the hall. On the way there, they were stopped and offered either chocolate cake or fruit salad. The participants who had to remember the number were twice as likely to grab the cake. Self-control and mental energy are finite resources; as much as we “should” watch only heady dramas and educational shows, sometimes all we can handle is crap. This is why my (very intelligent) friend Tiffany, who spends her days teaching autistic kids with behavioral problems, comes home and puts on Real Housewives. In How to Look at Television, an article published in 1954, researcher TW Adorno wrote, “Every spectator of a television mystery knows with absolute certainty how it is going to end. Tension is but superficially maintained and is unlikely to have a serious effect any more. On the contrary, the spectator feels on safe ground all the time. This longing for ‘feeling on safe ground’— reflecting an infantile need for protection, rather than his desire for a thrill—is catered to. The element of excitement is preserved only with tongue in cheek. Such changes fall in line with the potential change from a freely competitive to a virtually ‘closed’ society into which one wants to be admitted or from which one fears to be rejected. Everything somehow appears ‘predestined.’” So it’s fair to say television, despite its many advancements, has always served as emotional succor to the weary working class. Some bemoan its opium-like qualities, keeping the masses from revolting against the oligarchy, and that’s a valid critique. But there’s also value in relaxation. Not every moment has to be brimming with productivity, despite what capitalism says. Some time has to be devoted to self-care, including vegging out. As Flavor Flav says: “Best advice that I ever got is to do whatever it takes to make myself happy, so that I’ll be able to make others happy. If I’m not happy, I can’t make other people happy.” n

I’m a straight male kinkster who used to do live performances as a rope bondage top, but I recently jumped out of the kink community. I just think I’ll have better luck finding a long-term relationship with a girl from the vanilla world. So long as she’s GGG, I can live with it. As much as I loved the sex/kink with people I met in “the scene,” I never found anything/anyone for the “long term.” My question: I’m unsure of how much I should share about my past. Should I tell vanilla girls that I performed at bondage shows? I don’t want to scare them off, but I also don’t want it to come up years down the road and have it scare them off then. —Should He Always Reveal Experiences? When something awesome, interesting or commendable about you scares someone off—your fun and sexy kinks, your sexually adventurous history—your best course of action is to shrug and say “good riddance.” But if you’re afraid the otherwise GGG woman you recently met on a vanilla dating app or in a vanilla drinking establishment will panic and bolt, SHARE, you can wait to disclose your history of tying people up in front of crowds until she’s gotten to know you better. Your past as a bondage performer doesn’t present a health risk for the GGG women you’ll be tying up in private, SHARE, so you can go ahead and roll it out slowly. But do roll it out eventually. If you find that you’re unable to locate any LTR-worthy women in the vanilla world—just like you couldn’t find any in the fetish scene— then the problem was you, SHARE, not the scene. The thought of my wife being with another guy is a fantasy of mine. We’ll sometimes role-play that she has just come home from a fling, at which point I’ll go down on her while she tells me all the sexy condomless details. For health reasons, we aren’t going to actually do this. But can you recommend some substance that feels and perhaps even tastes like come that she can, um, insert into herself to add a sexy dose of verisimilitude to our play? It’s got to be safe and nonirritating for her, but it needs to look and maybe taste like semen. —Boy After Realistic Emulsions P.S. This isn’t a cuckold thing for us, as I have no desire to be humiliated. It’s more of a “hotwife” fantasy with a guy/guy bi twist. There’s a brand of silicone lubricant called Spunk that looks and feels—can you guess?— just like spunk. You might not want to guzzle bottles of it, BARE, but ingesting a little safeand-nonirritating silicone lube isn’t going to kill you. Order it at spunklube.com. n

here’s no conceivable scenario where I’d ever need this information, but I can name at least 10 girls who were on the Flavor of Love. Some of y’all will be thinking, “What is that? A porn?” and some will be like, “Only 10? Weak.” I’m talking about VH1’s now-defunct dating show where young women with minimal life skills competed for the affections of the least attractive member of Public Enemy: Flavor Flav. It ran for three seasons, resulted in multiple spin-offs, and its Round Two finale got the second highest ratings in a non-sports cable show in all of 2006. And it was stuuuuuuuuuupid. It was literally one of the dumbest things that’s ever been recorded. One time, a contestant legitimately pooped on the floor, and it was the height of the dramatic action for the episode. I was hooked. My roommates and I were obsessed with it, as well as other VH1 “reality” junk like The PickUp Artist, Celebrity Fit Club and The Surreal Life. We watched every episode and discussed them at length. At the time, we were all simultaneously working and pursuing doctoral degrees. It was like being on a fastidious diet and allowing ourselves a glazed donut every Sunday night: a ritual completely devoid of substance, but resulting in pure enjoyment. Now that I’m out of the cerebral endurance-sport that is grad school, I can’t stand reality TV for more than a few minutes. Those shows are as repugnant to me as black licorice, which is a thing you should infer I hate a whole lot. Now that I have the surplus cognitive energy, slow-paced, subtitled shows are more likely to grace my screen. As talented, inspired TV artists are mastering the form on cable and premium channels, we’re living in the renaissance of television programming. Yet while Breaking Bad (one of the most artfully-made dramas in history) shattered cable records with over 10 million viewers on its series finale, it was still outdone that night by a re-run of a CBS reality show. Because we’re stuuuuuuuupid. Also because not everyone has access to cable, but mostly because we’re stupid. OK, that’s not entirely fair. It’d be more precise to say that we base our entertainment choices off of the level of cerebral power that will be required to consume it.
