ISG has been a tradition to Nanyang Technological University, whereby all 13 schools get together to enjoy playing sport in a competitive way. The theme for this year ISG was set as “camaraderie”, which essentially means friendship, and what better way to forge friendship than through sports.

We managed to garner a total of 156 participants, an amazing statistic compared to last year’s. This is to add on to the fact that for a school with a general population of dominantly guys, our girls also rose to the challenge and formed teams to represent MAE in the games.
BADMINTON
With the hard work and determination which our players as well as team managers put in, MAE came in 2nd overall. We were extremely proud of our players. Their tenacity as well as never die spirit was what drove Team MAE to where it is. Together we embraced our victories as well as losses, encouraged each other and come together in what felt like a family, the big MAE family.
NETBALL
We would also like to use this opportunity to thank everyone who made this possible: the photographers, subcommittees and players, for whom none of this would have been possible without. The hard work and dedication you have put in for the team has definitely paid off thus far. We hope ISG becomes a beautiful memory in a small part of our university life and we urge all students to participate in future ISG to come. TEAM MAE, SOARING AS ONE.

nother goldMEDAL medal was secured 1st, 2nd, etc. by team MAE. This time, it was presented by the team MAE’s captain’s ball team. Reinforced by adept players and amazing teamwork strategy, team MAE made the game look easy. They proceeded to semifinals smoothly against WKW (20-14), SBS (53-04), and ADM (44-08). Lots of beautiful plays were made, especially the half-court shot by Cherie Choo which was successfully caught by Jordan Ang. The semifinal match was even tougher for them. Having to face a strong team like MSE, they went all out and eventually won the intense match with score 25-17. Now it was down to the final match. Surprisingly, team HSS walked over, leaving team MAE as the champion for ISG 2013/2014 Captain’s Ball. Not much to say, but well done team MAE! Thank you to all captain’s ball player for this additional gold medal.

kind and dexterous captain, those words are the best to describe Jordan Ang. Not only did he play like a pro, he also guided his teammates along the match. Even though team MAE made no preparation prior to ISG, he was confident that team MAE were able to win again this year as they were also the last year’s champion. Compared to other sports captain, Jordan was the most relax. He did not play competitively, no training, yet he was still able to deliver such a good game. Playing as best as he could and enjoying the game was his only strategy. He deserved to be the man of the match and also the champion.

eing a freshman does not hinder Azhari from leading the team. With talents and strong leadership skills, Azhari boosted the morale of the MAE players. A current NTU IVP player, Azhari is arguably the best floorball player in the recent ISG. “Try and play, just focus on basics like dribbling, passing, and shooting”, said the captain about the team strategy. According to him, the match against NBS was very tough, but the penalty save by the our goalkeeper turned the table around and made MAE able to win the game. Captain Azhari and other MAE players put more than 100 percent throughout ISG, hence the deserved championship.

eam MAE’s Floorball team created history by claiming first place in ISG. It started with the the first preliminary match against EEE which was a do or die game as the winner were able to go straight to semi-finals. As expected, MAE made it through with score 6-1. Despite facing team NBS who was the defending champion in the semifinal match, MAE conjures up beautiful plays along the game and eventually won the match with a dazzling score 6-3. Unexpectedly, the ultimate opponent was team SCBE. On the first half time, our hopes seemed fading away as SCBE lead the score 2-0. But all the players fought back real hard. Good saves by Lincoln the goalkeeper, and two goals scored by Andy Yong and Jun Hao brought the game back to life. Eventually, Captain Azhari sealed the match with his last goal, MAE won with score 3-2.

nother good news from bowling where Team MAE claimed victory in ISG 2013/2014. Not to mention the outstanding individual skills they have, our players dominated the day and delivered such entertaining games. Through countless strikes, Team MAE achieved the highest overall score among all teams. Furthermore, one of MAE bowlers, Chng Kiat, was awarded 2nd place for individual score. It was another great game and glory brought by team MAE. Thank you to all the MAE bowlers for adding another gold medal to MAE’s collection.

here is no doubt about his skill and talent, this guard made beautiful plays throughout the ISG Basketball. When asked about specific strategy that he used in the matches, he simply answered “men to men” because he believed in the experiences of his teammates. He was confident about the matches, including the final match, since team MAE had practiced for quite some time. He also emphasized that it is what in your heart that matters, and the MAE players had only one purpose which is to bring glory to MAE. At the end of the interview, Alvin humbly expressed his gratitude for the supports from both the spectators and the bench players.

eam MAE started with an immense hunger in this year’s ISG. In the preliminary rounds, they slaughtered team ADM with score 71 – 10 and forced team WKW to resign. The majority of the scores were made through fast breaks. Proceeding to the semifinals, they met team NIE which is also known as one of the toughest team. Despite the struggling they faced in the semifinal match, they eventually made it to the final with score of 28-19. At the final match against NBS, the players gave their best effort to gain the ball possession and score. In the end, it was such a good fight by the MAE players despite losing the match with score 42 – 47. It is such a pride for MAE to have these players and being the runner up for Basketball ISG 2013/2014.

eing one of the favorites for this year’s ISG, Team MAE’s Frisbee team has shown its quality by crushing SBS (8-2) and SCBE (10-0) in the preliminaries. Awaiting in the semifinal match was team MSE, another strong team. Despite facing such a strong opponent, team MAE defeated Team MSE 6-5 and made it to the final. Team NIE was the ultimate obstacle which team MAE failed to overcome, resulting in their downfall in the finals. At the end, MAE grabbed the runner-up position of Frisbee. It was a good display nonetheless by team MAE.

here is nothing much to say about him, except his vocal presence in leading the team. Playing Frisbee for about 7 years, the MAE Frisbee team captain once obtained 2nd place in Asia Oceania Ultimate Cup Championship 2013 for open category. “We are much more prepared this year, we have 2 trainings prior to ISG and a friendly match against MSE”, said the captain about his preparation for the ISG. Using a strategy called vertical stack, in which the playfield is divided into half so that cuts are possible, MAE team managed to climb up to the finals. Leading a team is never an easy job, but Kar Jun proved the other way. Congratulations to MAE Frisbee team!

vercoming the odds and staging comebacks, MAE female basketball team brought their skills to the table during the ISG 2013/2014 Basketball. Losing the first preliminary match against team ADM did not turn them down. In fact, they made a huge comeback by beating team WKW and team HSS, thus making it to the semifinal. They might be lost to NIE in semifinal, but they played their best in the following 3rd place decider match. Countless of shooting attempts were made and the MAE girls got a lot of points from that. Their hard work and perseverance eventually paid off as they claimed the 3rd place in ISG 2013/2014 Female Basketball.

his beautiful girl was the star player of MAE Basketball team. With such great shooting skills and ball control, she scored many points in the decisive match between MAE and SPMS. Pei Ying pointed out that MAE’s main strategy was to play as a team. “They created chances for me to go in”, said this girl about the team’s play style. Even though there was only one training that MAE female basketball had prior to ISG, the result was in fact very satisfying.

eam MAE’s Badminton team is known for their strengths, and that is exactly what they showed in ISG 2013/2014 Badminton. Having a smooth start by defeating Team CEE and Team SBS, they immediately proceeded to the semifinals. Despite having to face team NIE in the semifinal, Team MAE marched on. Unfortunately, they lost narrowly with a score of 2 – 3. With a sliver of hope, Team MAE fought all out against team EEE and eventually secured the 3rd place for ISG 2013/2014.

aving played badminton since 13 years old, Daniel grew fond of this sport. His highest achievement was being an A Division Champion at Junior College level. It is by no surprise that Daniel is one of the key players for the Team MAE’s Badminton team. Playing in the category male double and mix double, Daniel won everything but two matches. It seems that his preparations of twice-a-weektrainings for ISG paid off. “It was a tough match against NIE, but I enjoyed myself ”, said Daniel about his overall experience in the ISG. At the end of the interview session, he thanked everyone for supporting him and the rest of his teammates.

His preparation for ISG was an increased-intensity training. “It was quite fun, even though some schools walked over, at least I know where I stand because next year I am trying for IVP,” Ming Hui said about his opinion on the overall race.

t was a breakthrough year for Team MAE’ swimming team this year. Team MAE made it to the final round for male relay, female relay, and mix relay. Competing against tough teams like NBS and MSE in the final, the MAE swimmers put up their highest effort on display. The graceful jumpstarts, swift breathing time, and vigorous movements – our players did everything to save as much time as possible. The atmosphere heightened as it boiled down to the last swimmers, as each one of them fiercely rushed towards the finish line. Eventually, MAE got 4th place for male relay, 3rd place for female relay, and 5th place for mix relay. Overall Team MAE finished third. Excellent achievements for MAE!

t was an adrenalin-pumping day for the MAE girls as they started the first match against team NIE. It was a very solid game and they got defeated. However, giving up was not an option. After learning from their mistakes in the previous match, Team MAE successfully propelled themselves to the quarterfinals by winning against Team CEE. Having Team MSE as their next opponent in the quarterfinal, Team MAE gave their best shot. Unfortunately, we were not able to make it through. All in all, we thank all of the MAE Netball players for their relentless effort in making MAE name proud.

emale Futsal did well this time in ISG. Despite the early defeat against team NBS, they fought back in the following match against team CEE and defeated them with a scoreline of 3-2. Victory against CEE was not enough for team MAE to qualify for the semifinals. Through this game, the girls fully displayed the spirit of camaraderie which was also the theme of this year’s ISG. Sometimes it does not matter if you win or not, as long as you have given your best.

eam MAE’s table tennis team had a great start by winning against the mighty NIE with score 3 – 2. Having an intense men’s double match versus NIE, they eventually secured their victory. With this victory on our back, it boosted our spirit in making to the semifinals. However it was not the case when our next opponent Team CEE beat us with a score of 1 – 4. Despite being eliminated, Team MAE has shown their immense fighting spirit throughout the game. With the extra year of experience gained, Team MAE will definitely be a force to be reckoned with in the coming year.

eing the host school for this year’s ISG Tennis, Team MAE did not disappoint. MAE Tennis team put their best efforts throughout the day. They fought hard against team CEE and team MED despite losing 2-3. These loses did not dampen the players’ spirit and they came back to outclass SCE with an astounding score of 5-0 in the remaining match. It was a good display and encouraging performance from Team MAE.

AE Futsal team started the preliminary round of ISG impressively. Playing against CEE in the first match, both teams played relentlessly. No goals were scored during the first half, but team MAE made the best out of the penalty chance in the second half. Billy Wong, a year 2 student, successfully scored and broke the dead lock with score 1-0. The first victory motivated Team MAE to go for the win in order to secure a semifinal spot. In the second match, they beat team SPMS comfortably with score 2-0. Qualification to the semifinal came down to the wire with all three teams having equal chance in making through, hence defeat was never an option. However an evil twist of fate saw NBS stunned Team MAE with a late goal that got us eliminated. It was a heartbreaking moment, but it will only motivate the team to perform better in the next ISG.

eing a seeded team in the group, it was a major upset that Team MAE did not proceed to the semifinal. However MAE volleyball team deserves to get a round of applause. In the first match, they defeated team HSS with score 25-21. Facing the strong Team IGS, they also managed to secure their victory with score 25-21. Unfortunately that they lost to Team CEE. It was a very close match with so many deuces which saw team CEE eventually won with score 28-26. With this defeat, Team MAE hopefully will come back stronger next year.
