What is a revision course?

I would recommend it to everyone!

About us

A revision course is a course that prepares you for your final exams by reviewing what you need to know. At our revision courses you get a full syllabus review and an opportunity to delve deeper into areas that you find challenging. Our courses help you to kick-start your revision and provide you with a motivational boost. As you feel yourself grasping difficult concepts and getting an overview of what you are supposed to know, you will see your confidence and performance increase. Our goal is to help you be your very best!

Today, as a growing international company, our desire to help younger students remains the key element of what we do. Some of our students find it hard coping with their workload or understanding certain crucial concepts on their own. Others are students of outstanding ability who hope to put in exceptional performances in the final examinations. Whatever your requirements, we are here to help. At the centre of our teaching method is a profound belief in the benefits of student-to-student teaching. As recent IB graduates, our tutors have a deep understanding of the challenges facing IB students today, as well as an immediate connection to the course and the finer points of exam technique. Our tutors are well-qualified, rigorous, demanding and, crucially, approachable. You will find that our tutors really enjoy helping you with your questions and can relate directly to your

problems. Indeed, some of our tutors are exceptional graduates from our previous courses, who can testify to the success of the concept, and to our genuine belief in student potential. In this prospectus we present our Winter and Spring Revision for 2010. This year we are offering courses in London, Miami, Philadelphia and Stockholm. In addition we also offer Summer Courses. You can always find the latest information about us and our courses on our website.

Wherever you are, we warmly welcome you to our 2010 courses!

The truly committed teachers did not only help me revise in a very effective way, they also gave me the tools and self-confidence I needed. In short, it has NEVER been so fun and easy to study, and was worth every penny.

2

A part of your ib years Revision Courses Europe & America (RCEA) was born out of a CAS project helping younger students to do well in subjects they found difficult. We realised that we were able to help our pupils in ways that were extremely rewarding for both tutors and students.

Why attend a revision course? We offer concise and to-the-point teaching designed to help you maximise your exam performance. Attending a revision course leads to a useful change of setting that helps you to focus your studying and clearly address your problems or anxieties.

Who attends our courses? It is a common misconception that only one type of student attends revision courses. In fact, over the years we have met all kinds of students from all kinds of backgrounds and ambitions.

Attending a revision course is a great investment for you.

What sets us apart? Our courses represent a complete shift of atmosphere compared to what you are normally used to. You will be tutored by distinguished IB graduates with a mastery of their subject but also with a dedication and energy you seldom encounter elsewhere. This involvement and closeness in experience that our tutors have to their students is a unique part of RCEA’s revision course experience. Our tutors know what exactly what you are going through and will help you structure your knowledge and prepare yourself like they did just a few years before. You will find yourself inspired by your tutors and you will benefit from the personal and constructive atmosphere at the courses.

Our revision courses will help you if you:

• • • ••

need a kick-start in their revision seek the additional motivational boost. lack the discipline to revise on their own need the extra guidance and lecturing. want to make sure that they have grasped everything and want to get an overview of the syllabus. need to fill in acute knowledge gaps.

Whoever you are you will find someone like you at our courses. And in the diversity of backgrounds you will find a dynamic and exciting learning environment where you will learn a lot and relieve exam stress.

Our goal is to help you be your very best!

One of the great things about Winter Revision is that you get an early start before your exams, the longer you work with your studies the better you will perform! Another benefit is that if you need to perform well for your mock exams – for example if your are applying to university with your predicted grades.

Our revision courses offer you:

• • • •• •

2½ days tutoring (17.5 hours) for our winter courses and 2 days tutoring (15 hours) for our spring courses 2 hours of homework between days full syllabus review sharpen your exam skills practice on exam questions encouragement, inspiration and involvement

Winter Revision Our 2010 Winter Revision will be held in London (p.10) just after New Years, starting on the 5th of January. Each course during Winter Revision lasts two and a half days and offers a blend of intense revision and thorough practice.

Spring Revision Our 2010 Spring Revision will be held in Stockholm (p.12), London (p.14), Philadelphia (p.16) and Miami (p.18). This is the classic revision time in and around Easter. This year we welcome you to both our classic two day intense revision courses – a truly intense and inspiring experience – as well as our brand new four day foundation courses. The foundation courses have been developed for those of you who need to rework the basics of your subject. During the foundation courses there is more opportunity to go through basics and get longer explanations on difficult topics.

Spring courses will help you become more prepared than ever to write and excel on your exams.

5

The courses got me to start studying earlier than I would have without. It was also very helpful to look at a subject from another perspective than from the one of my teachers at my school and to go through the whole curriculum in very small groups!

Our Pre-Exam Revision courses Prior to the 2010 exams we are offering two revision sessions, the pre-mock winter revision beginning in January and the pre-exam spring revision beginning in late March.

Winter courses are the perfect opportunity for you to sharpen your skills and knowledge.

Super! Best course Ever!

Student - to Student At the heart of our courses is our student-to-student teaching concept. This has proven to be a successful educational concept that is positively evaluated by our past students.

6

All our tutors are distinguished IB graduates who have first-hand experience of the exams and the Diploma Programme. The memory of the exams is still fresh in their minds – as well as of how they did to do so well! Our tutors are now studying at top universities around the

world – such as Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, the American Ivy League schools and the Stockholm School of Economics. Our rigorous recruitment process ensures continuing high quality over the years and we evaluate our tutors and the teaching after each set of courses.

Because our tutors are young and keen to help, you will find yourself encouraged to ask more questions, identify more problem areas, and ultimately to push yourself further than you would in your normal working environment.

We have found that students respond well to teaching from tutors who are near in age to them,

and who understand the questions they pose and the problems they face. And as distinguished IB graduates, our tutors have proved that they can pass on the knowledge and necessary techniques to students in order for them to really excel at the IB exams. Our tutors can also offer you guidance on your next step, from the perspective of being current students at top universities around the world. They can answer questions about the university experience that will rarely be accessible elsewhere.

Teaching and course structure – three pillars All our courses are structured around our three pillar model of good revision: syllabus revision, exam practice and exam skills.

Syllabus revision is the foundation of the course. Your tutor will go through your subject’s syllabus section by section allowing a comprehensive revision of the knowledge you should have acquired. This will yield the additional benefit of giving you a structured overview piecing together whatever loose ends you might have been stuck with.

Exam practice is a central component in your classes. You will learn the syllabus constantly aided by and referring to past exam questions in order to ensure that you learn in a way that will actually be of benefit to your coming exams.

Finally, exam skills in general are needed for success in the IB. Exam taking is a skill and our tutors have inside experiences and insights that they happily will pass on to you to help you in the difficult task of preparation.

Working on their own class plans which are adapted for each group, the tutors can also bring their own personal experience to the table. The result is an inspiring and involved classroom experience with very intense and rewarding days for you.

Together, our three pillars combine into a powerful educational experience, especially at the hands of our great tutors, together with you!

The course was a great experience! The classes were focused and instructive with young and understanding teachers. I feel a lot more confident about the exams now!

Our tutors are passionate about what they teach and about the teaching itself pragmatic rather than dogmatic, innovative rather than conservative. This approach complements school teaching, providing that all-important fresh perspective for you.

One of the best things was that my teachers were successful graduates who were really enthusiastic about the subjects!

The tutors are the life and blood of our courses. You will discover a new form of student-teacher bond at our courses. All our tutors have been carefully selected and have all gone through the exams. Below we present a few of our tutors as well as some top study tips we have collected from them.

very rewarding. RCEA gave me the opportunity to do so in an amazing environment. From my experience, the students are all fantastic individuals with a desire to learn that continually impresses me and creates a class dynamic which makes the job a great deal of fun. I was very pleasantly surprised by how keen all my students were and to find out that they weren’t just interested in getting a good grade, but also in understanding the subject and all its complexities.

Study tips Our tutors give you some study tips:

could not think of a better place to do it. Knowing what the frustrations of revision feels like, and hopefully knowing how to overcome some of it, teaching for RCEA means you can give more to the students than formulas on the board. Tutoring is like reliving all your IB feelings, but instead of worrying and getting anxiety attacks, you can use the experience you have to help and support the students.

and the learning environment on the course is very different from that of a normal classroom. I get to delve fully into a subject with my students, and this is very satisfying! The fact that people come from all over the world to study at RCEA makes for a very interesting student body, each of whom can contribute something to the class, like a different approach to understanding a topic.

d tips that will come in ring the exams!

Katerina Elias-Trostmann, University of Warwick

Everyone learns differently, although teachers and schools may not make this obvious. It´s important to find a manner in which you are concentrated and at your most efficient. I personally write out draft essays and answers, because things stick in my head better when I write them down.

Naomi Weinberg, UCL It sounds really basic, but my main strategy has always been to plan my time well and to not give up too much of my social life. I work much better if I know I have something else to look forward to when I’m done.

Louise Stenfors Virenfeldt, Cambridge University

Read the syllabus carefully! The difference between a good grade and an excellent one isn’t just learning the material well, but knowing the criteria of the examiners, too!
