Dear Passengers,

A falta de conocer los datos oficiales de cierre de la temporada, ya sabemos que la entrada de turistas permite augurar que será un año histórico. De hecho, en los seis primeros meses de 2015 han entrado en España 29,2 millones de visitantes, un 4,2% más que en igual periodo de 2014.

Although, we do not have the official annual data yet, I am happy to inform you that there is sufficient information to conclude that this year will be an historic year with regard to tourism. In fact, during the first six months of 2015, Spain received 29.2 million visitors, a 4.2% increase compared to the same period last year.

Más del 82% de estos turistas entran en nuestro país a través de aeropuertos, un porcentaje que continúa creciendo año a año y que deja claro el papel que desempeñan las compañías aéreas, como atestiguan las cifras de Aena que reflejan un aumento de un 5% del tráfico aéreo.

You may be interested to know that over 82% of tourists arrive here by air, a percentage that continues to grow making it clear the important role aviation companies play in the tourism sector. Data published so far by Aena reveals an important increase of 5% in air traffic.

Nuestra modesta aportación en este pasado mes de agosto ha sido de 6.925 vuelos operados, de ellos 1.630 internacionales, algo más de un 5% superior a la del año anterior, fundamentalmente comunicando España con Francia, Italia y Marruecos.

Last month, Air Nostrum operated a total 6,925 flights of which 1,630 (with an increase of approximately 5% compared to 2014) were international flights to and from destinations in France, Italy and Morocco.

Aunque las circunstancias adversas de países competidores han favorecido la llegada de visitantes extranjeros, que continúa compensando parte de los desequilibrios en la balanza de pagos nacional, el gran mérito corresponde a los atractivos que ofrecen los destinos españoles. Y nosotros hemos querido asomar a las páginas de esta revista algunos de estos rincones para animarles a viajar a ellos.

Desde Asturias nos llega una propuesta singular, especialmente orientada a esta segunda parte del año y muy ligada a la buena mesa. Les ofrecemos siete citas gastronómicas para superar el síndrome que sobreviene al volver a la rutina tras las vacaciones. Yo, personalmente aún recuerdo un bugre (bogavante, en asturiano) que tuve la ocasión de degustar en el puerto pesquero de Tazones cuando en junio de 2005 fui a presentar las nuevas rutas de verano al Principado. Ni antes ni después he tomado uno tan especial. Otra alternativa es Lleida. Nuestra sugerencia apunta a esos majestuosos paisajes del Pirineo leridano que nos conectan tan íntimamente con la naturaleza.

n spite of the fact that there are still a few weeks to go before the summer season ends, I am happy to inform you that Spain has already broken the record as far as visitors are concerned.

Asturias and its excellent gastronomy is the subject of our first article. We have chosen, for those who might be suffering post summer holiday blues, seven popular autumn gastronomic events. I personally cannot forget the delicious bugre (lobster in Asturian) I ate in the fishing port of Tazones in June, 2005. I had travelled to Asturias to inaugurate a new summer flight programme. I must admit I have never since tasted a lobster as delicious. The province of Lleida is our second destination. Home of the spectacular Lleida Pyrenees, its breathtaking scenery offers visitors a journey deep into the heart of nature.

La vinculación de La Rioja con el vino es tan estrecha que la época de la vendimia se presenta como una ocasión inmejorable para visitar esta región. Le planteamos varias propuestas que incluyen una serie de recorridos para una grata experiencia de enoturismo.

One of the main attractions of the sunny Algarve coastline is, without a doubt, its stunning beaches. However, it is also well known for the friendliness of its residents, marvellous climate, mouth-watering cuisine and extraordinary cultural patrimony.

lgarve proviene del término árabe “Al Gharb”, que significa Oeste. Esta denominación nos permite inferir, además de su constatación geográfica, la densidad de su historia, por la que han pasado fenicios, cartagineses, griegos, romanos, godos, magrebíes y mauritanos, hasta que en 1249 Alfonso III lo arrebató definitivamente al mundo islámico para integrarlo en su reino, lo que le permitiría coronarse como rey de Portugal y de Algarve. En la actualidad, miles de visitantes de toda Europa acuden a esta esquina del continente para disfrutar de su costa, bañada por un persistente sol y vigilada por su patrimonio monumental. En total casi doscientos kilómetros de litoral con más de cien playas, cincuenta de ellas con bandera azul, y una gran diversidad de paisajes: rocosos acantilados, suaves colinas, largos arenales, islas, pequeñas bahías, pintorescas casitas, insólitas grutas, sorprendentes rías, lagunas y humedales. En el litoral sur, como una prolongación de las costas onubenses, predominan las playas de arena blanca escondidas entre acantilados; en la costa oeste las playas parecen diseñadas para practicar el surf. El sol es el principal aliado del mar, de aguas cálidas y transparentes. Los naturales de Algarve aseguran unos 300 días de sol al año, lo que permite a nórdicos y británicos soñar con bañarse en sus aguas en cualquier estación. Las brisas atlánticas y las corrientes oceánicas coinciden y propician un clima benigno con un mar bravío que permite prolongar la actividad en la playa diversificada en distintas disciplinas deportivas. he name Algarve comes from the Arabic word “Al Gharb”, meaning “West”, a name that not only helps identify its geographical location, but also its rich history. The Algarve has been inhabited by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Goths, North Africans and Mauritanians amongst others. However, it was Alfonso III, following his success against the Moors, who began in 1249 to use the title King of Portugal and the Algarve. Bathed in constant sunlight and home of an impressive monumental patrimony, the striking Algarve coastline receives thousands of visitors every year. Its approximately two hundred kilometre long coastline has over a hundred beaches of which fifty have been awarded a blue flag eco-label. Its magnificent landscapes feature rocky coves, rolling hills, sand dunes, islands, small bays, picturesque houses, caves and spectacular estuaries, lakes and marshlands. On the southern shore, on what seems like a prolongation of the coastline of Huelva, visitors will find numerous white sandy beaches hidden amongst rocky cliffs while the beaches on the western shore are perfect for surfers. The sun is, without a doubt, the Atlantic’s greatest ally, responsible for warming the Algarve’s beautiful transparent waters. The climatic conditions of the Algarve assure 300 days of sun every year, allowing Scandinavian and British tourists to dream of swimming here all year round. The Atlantic breeze and ocean currents come together to create a benign climate with a wavy sea that permits the practise of many different types of water sports. Chimeneas Cuadradas, rectangulares, circulares o en rombo, las chimeneas algarvías tenían un valor que trascendía lo utilitario. Era frecuente encontrar dos chimeneas en las viviendas, una sencilla que servía para hacer las comidas y otra, más pequeña y totalmente personalizada, de uso simplemente ornamental, pero de gran valor. Se diría que se trata de una sutil coquetería, quizá la única licencia que permitía la tradicional sobriedad de los algarvíos. El valor de la chimenea se medía en función de los días que el maestro albañil tardaría en levantarla y decorarla, y en ella se fijaba la fecha de la construcción. Estas construcciones aparecen de forma insospechada en cualquier calle. Puntiagudas o chatas, ocres o blancas, con ribetes azules o verdes, lisas o con filigranas, con remate o sin él, el repertorio es enorme y aunque no hay dos iguales sí que se pueden advertir estilos predominantes en cada una de las zonas.

Chimneys One of the Algarve’s most popular symbols is its chimneys whether cylindrical, square or rectangular, simple or elaborate. Visitors will frequently find two chimneys on the roof of a house, one for domestic use and another smaller, more personalised one built for ornamental purposes. These ornamental chimneys might be considered the signature of the owner, a way of circumventing the traditional sobriety of the local architecture. The cost of a chimney was once measured by the time it would take a master mason to build and decorate it. This was how the two parties forged an agreement. These chimneys can be found in the most unsuspected places. Slender fingers or squat stumps, ochre or plain white, with blue or green trimmings, with or without filigrees, the repertory is vast and although no two chimneys are exactly the same, individual styles can be seen predominating certain areas.

Unánimes son las recomendaciones de caldeiradas de pescado y marisco, las cataplanas de almejas y un dulce con reminiscencias islámicas a base de higos y almendras. Entre los vinos también hay mucho donde elegir, aunque entre los preferidos de los sumiller están los caldos de las subregiones con denominaciones de origen Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa y Tavira. No puede ser casual que Algarve sea la región portuguesa con mayor concentración de cocineros con estrellas Michelin, todos ellos apoyando su talento en la sencillez de sus productos. Pero además de estos distinguidos establecimientos, también se puede comer muy bien, y a buen precio, en restaurantes tradicionales más modestos donde se aprecia el gusto por los alimentos frescos de la lonja. Además de su huella en la cocina, los sucesivos pobladores han dejado rastro en el patrimonio monumental y en las tradiciones. Manifestaciones que han quedado de este pasado son, por ejemplo, las faenas de los mariscadores y pescadores, la artesanía de mimbre y cerámica, y la música.

Specialities include a wide range of local fish and seafood stews such as the clam cataplana (coming from the name of the copper utensil in which the clams are cooked) and mouthwatering sweets, many with Arabic reminiscences. Amongst its range of local wines, we would mention the popular Denomination of Origin regional wines of Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa and Tavira. It is no coincidence that the Algarve is the region of Portugal with the highest number of Michelin star restaurants where talented chefs stand out for the simplicity of their dishes. The Algarve is also home of other types of restaurants where visitors are invited to enjoy traditional Portuguese specialities made with fresh market produce. The Algarve’s early settlers played an important role in the local traditions and monumental patrimony. Some of the traditions of the past are still in force today and include fishing and shell fishing, basket making, ceramics and traditional music.

En el ámbito arquitectónico, se conservan restos romanos, como los de Ossóoba, cuna de la ciudad de Faro; las ruinas de Milreu, en Estói; o la villa romana del Cerro da Vila, en Vilamoura. Los cinco siglos de ocupación islámica subsisten bajo el aspecto de las iglesias en que fueron adaptadas antiguas mezquitas; pero es en las chimeneas en donde la albañilería popular alcanza el grado de representación más emblemática. Testigos más recientes son la catedral gótica y el teatro Lethes, antiguo convento jesuita que en el siglo XIX fue transformado con mucho sentido estético en escenario para representaciones.

It is also home of a variety of Roman remains such as those at Ossooba, cradle of the city of Faro. Others include the ruins of Milreu in Estoi and the Roman villa of Cerro da Vila in Vilmoura, both worth a visit. The influence of five centuries of Islamic occupation is easy to see in the local churches, many of which were built on the ruins of ancient mosques. Meanwhile, one of its most popular emblematic symbols is its beautifully decorated chimneys. More recent historical monuments include the Gothic style Silves Cathedral and the Lethes Theatre, the latter located in an ancient Jesuit convent that was converted into a theatre during the 19th century.

Aunque las actividades vinculadas al mar son la imagen más habitual de Algarve, sería injusto no atender a las posibilidades que ofrece el turismo de naturaleza. El clima de la zona constituye el principal soporte de unos paisajes embriagadores. Destaca el Parque Natural del Suroeste Alentejano, la Costa Vicentina y Punta de Sagres, donde el litoral oeste y sur se encuentran en estado salvaje, creando un ecosistema marino único. Para ornitólogos aficionados y público curioso en general, el Parque Natural de la Ría Formosa, con 60 kilómetros de islas y canales, resulta un punto privilegiado para la observación de aves. También la Reserva Natural de la Marisma de Castro Marim ofrece todo un espectáculo con la visión de más de doscientas especies de aves acuáticas.

Although the Algarve is generally associated with activities related to the sea, it would be unfair not to mention its numerous inland activities. Its climate is considered to play an important role in the stunning scenery found at the South West Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Nature Park and the Sagres Promontory where the south and west coasts meet up, creating between them a unique marine ecosystem. Birdwatchers and the public in general should not miss a visit to the River Formosa Nature Reserve, an extraordinary bird watching area with 60 kilometres of canals and islands. Also worth a special mention is the Marshland Nature Reserve of Castro Marim where it is possible to observe over two hundred different aquatic bird species.

Lara gonzález “Formar parte de la selección es un orgullo y un lujo” “Being a member of the national team makes me very proud, and is an honor” ¿Cómo empezó su andadura en el balonmano? El balonmano es un deporte que se practicaba en mi familia. Mi padre jugó de joven y cuando era pequeña siempre iba a ver a mi hermana. Además en el colegio mis amigas se apuntaron y yo con ellas. ¿Creyó que llegaría tan lejos? No, la verdad es que cuando eres pequeña lo practicas por puro hobby, no crees que un día vas a llegar a dedicarte a ello profesionalmente. Para mí se ha convertido en una pasión, un estilo de vida. Actualmente juega en el Siofok húngaro, ¿qué pensó cuando le ofrecieron ir a jugar a una liga tan competitiva? Creo que actualmente la liga húngara es una de las más fuertes. De los doce equipos que la forman 6 ó 7 están a un nivel muy similar, los pequeños detalles son los que marcarán la diferencia en la clasificación. Cuando me ofrecieron la oportunidad de formar parte de Siofok, acepté porque creo que es una experiencia que me puede aportar mucho. Estudia Ciencias de la Actividad Física y el Deporte, ¿cómo compagina los estudios con su actividad profesional? Estoy estudiando en la Universidad Miguel Hernández. No es fácil ya que es una carrera que no se puede hacer por la UNED por lo que llevarla a distancia es un poco complejo. Los profesores me pasan material y yo trabajo en casa y hago las prácticas. En las fechas que puedo voy a España a hacer los exámenes ¿Qué hace Lara González cuando no juega al balonmano? Aprovecho el tiempo para entre los entrenamientos para estudiar CAFD, voy a clases de idiomas… hasta ahora que he estado jugando en Francia estudiaba francés, ahora que estoy en Hungría voy a empezar con el inglés, puesto que el húngaro es muy complicado (risas). Mi tiempo libre es para salir con mis amigas, ver alguna serie, visitar ciudades… ¿Un destino de AIR NOSTRUM donde perderse? Menorca. ¿Qué supone ser jugadora de la selección española? Poder formar parte de la selección es un orgullo y un lujo, es el sueño de toda jugadora de balonmano. Si a eso le sumas que el pasado europeo llegamos a la final es increíble, sin duda es de los mejores recuerdos que guardo como jugadora de balonmano. ¿Cuáles son sus próximos objetivos deportivos? Mis objetivos deportivos son seguir creciendo como jugadora en el Siofok y meternos en los play off de la liga Húngara. INTERVIEW ENTREVISTA La alicantina nacida en Santa Pola lleva muchos años fuera de su tierra, más concretamente tres, desde 2012. Con tan solo 20 años fichó por el Metz francés. De esa etapa se lleva cinco títulos, una final europea y la participación en dos ediciones de la Champions League. Ahora comienza otra etapa, esta vez en el Siofok húngaro, uno de los equipos más importantes de Europa, al que llega con muchas ilusiones. El poco tiempo que le queda fuera de las canchas lo aprovecha para avanzar en sus estudios de Ciencias de la Actividad Física y el Deporte, algo complicado pero a lo que dedica mucho esfuerzo. The Alicante born player from Santa Pola has been outside Spain for some time, more specifically for three years, since 2012. At just 20 years old she was signed by the French team Metz. She won five titles during this stage, one European final and tool part in two seasons of the Champions League. She is now starting another stage, this time with the Hungarian team Siofok, one of the most important teams in Europe, which she is very excited about. The little time she is off the courts she spends on her Physical Activity and Sports Science studies, which is a little complicated but which she puts a lot of effort into.

How did you start playing handball? Handball is a sport that has been played in my family for a long time. My father played and when I was little I always went to see my sister play. My friends at school signed up to play, me among them. Did you ever think you would get this far? No, the truth is when you are young you just play for fun, as a hobby, you never really think that one day you will be playing professionally. It has become a passion for me, a way of life. You are currently playing in the Hungarian team Siofok. What did you think when they offered you a place in such a competitive league? I think the Hungarian league is one of the strongest. Of the twelve teams in the league, 6 or 7 of them are at a very similar level, and the tiny details are what actually make the difference on the table. When I was offered the chance to sign for Siofok I accepted because I think it is a good experience which will help be grow a lot. You are studying Physical Activity and Sports Science. How are you able to combine your studies and playing professionally? I am studying at the Miguel Hernandez University. It is not easy because it is not a degree you can study offcampus, and therefore doing it at a distance is rather difficult. The professors send me material and I work at home and do my practicum. I go to Spain whenever I can to do the exams. What does Lara Gonzalez do when she is not playing handball? I take advantage of the time between training sessions to study. I go to language classes… up until now when I was playing in France I studied French, but now I’m in Hungary I am going to start learning English, because Hungarian is very difficult (laughs). I spend my free time going out with my friends, watching series on TV or sightseeing in cities… Somewhere AIR NOSTRUM flies to where you would like to get lost? Menorca. What does playing in the Spanish national team mean to you? Being able to be a member of the national team makes me very proud, and is an honor. It is a dream all handball players have. If on top of that you add the fact that we got through to the European final, it is absolutely amazing, without a doubt one of the best memories I have as a handball player.

You often fly with IBERIA REGIONAL AIR NOSTRUM. What aspects would you highlight about the company? I have travelled with the company mainly with the Spanish team, and also on private trips. I would highlight their punctuality, the good service and the general service.

What are your next sporting objectives? My sporting objectives are to carry on growing as a player in Siofok, and reaching the Hungarian league playoffs. With the Spanish team the next objective is the world championship in Denmark in December.

i ha regresado de sus vacaciones y está entre ese 45% de españoles que siente malestar físico o emocional al reincorporarse al trabajo, aquí le dejamos siete propuestas que harán mucho más llevadera la vuelta a la rutina. Porque en Asturias el calendario festivo en otoño es casi tan prolijo como en verano. Época de matanza, recolección y final de cosecha, en otoño se suceden en Asturias fiestas, jornadas y eventos vinculados a la gastronomía. En ese universo recolector nuestra primera cita será con la avellana o “ablana”. El primer fin de semana de octubre, el Festival de la Avellana en Piloña brinda la ocasión perfecta para que los cosecheros se reúnan en Infiesto para ofrecer los mejores frutos de la temporada y rendir culto a las variedades locales: Negreta, Amandi, Quirós, Espinareda, Casina y Villaviciosa. f you have just come back from your summer holidays and are amongst the 45% of holidaymakers feeling physically and emotionally distressed at the thought of going back to work, here are seven ways of making the return easier. The festivities calendar in Asturias in autumn is as full as it is in summer. You see, the pig slaughtering and harvest season in Asturias brings with it all kinds of festivities, fairs and events mostly related to gastronomy. In this harvesting universe, our first rendezvous will be with the hazelnut or ablana. The Hazelnut Festival celebrated in Infiesto (Piloña) during the first week of October provides harvesters with an ideal place not only for displaying their best seasonal produce, but also for bringing to the attention of the public the different types of hazelnuts: Negreta, Amandi, Quiros, Espinareda, Casina and Villaviciosa. This festival dates back over forty years and also features traditional sports and music events. A week later, visitors can choose between one of Asturias’ famous cider festivals or paying tribute to the Asturian vine growers. The Villaviciosa Apple Festival coincides with the apple harvest and is, of course, the local cider mills’ busiest time. Once the apples have been harvested, they are taken to the mills to be scratted (ground down) into what is known as pomace or pommage before being put through a special fermentation process.

El momento más emocionante es cuando la Reina de la Manzana y de las Fiestas, acompañada de gaitas y de personas ataviadas con el traje tradicional, ofrece el primer mosto de la temporada a la Virgen del Portal. Si nos alejamos de la Comarca de la Sidra, en las mismas fechas, Cangas del Narcea celebra la decimocuarta edición de la Fiesta de la Vendimia. Del 9 al 12 de octubre no sólo disfrutará del desfile de las cofradías sino que podrá pasear por bodegas y viñedos para conocer mejor la dificultad que presentan estos cultivos en laderas pendientes y por qué se denomina “viticultura heroica”. Por supuesto, tampoco faltarán las catas de la Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) Vino de Cangas ni la escenificación de una pisada tradicional de uva. Como un buen vino siempre marida bien con un buen queso, nuestra siguiente cita gastronómica es en Benia (Onís), el 25 de octubre. Allí, además de tropezarse con gaiteros, grupos de baile tradicional o por qué no decirlo con los mejores carneros y ovejas xaldas de la región, el Certamen del Quesu Gamonéu le ofrece una oportunidad única para adquirir uno de los mejores quesos del país. El Gamoneu es un queso graso ligeramente ahumado y afinado en cueva natural donde obtiene leves floraciones de penicillium en los bordes que le dan un toque azulado. El Festival de la Manzana (Villaviciosa) coincide con el punto óptimo de maduración del fruto

The Villaviciosa Apple Festival coincides with the apple harvest

dado del ganado de los pastores de los Picos de Europa. En este singular periplo gastronómico saltamos de los Picos al corazón de uno de los concejos más grandes de Asturias: Navelgas seduce con su Noche Mágica y Festival del Esfoyón y el Amagosto o Amagüestu. En la noche del sábado 7 de noviembre, Navelgas se volcará en revivir con la mayor exactitud los esfoyones de antaño, reuniones de vecinos para deshojar (esfoyar) el maíz de una familia y posteriormente enristrarlo y colgarlo de los corredores de casas y hórreos. Finalizada la tarea, los dueños de la casa servían del amagosto, tradición también muy asturiana. Se asaban castañas y se acompañaban de sidra dulce recién mayada (exprimida). Las calles se cubren de paja y se iluminan con antorchas. Los vecinos se visten con ropajes antiguos y las diferentes asociaciones se encargan de preparar las viandas con las que agasajarán a los visitantes: frixuelos, castañas, tortos de maíz, bollos preñaos, manteca recién desnatada… Estas reuniones suponían un acontecimiento social: personas de todas las edades se juntaba para charlar, cantar e, incluso, los más jóvenes aprovechaban para cortejar. Finalizamos nuestro recorrido en la cuenca del Nalón y más concretamente en San Martín del Rey Aurelio donde sabiamente se rinde homenaje a dos platos tradicionales: el pote de nabos y las cebollas rellenas. Si alguien sabe de nabos son los habitantes de Sotrondio, que incluso celebran una fiesta en honor a esta hortaliza, la Fiesta de los Nabos (11 de noviembre), un auténtico placer de dioses, por el sabor y la calidad de los condimentos. Sin salir de San Martín nos encontramos otra delicia gastronómica del otoño astur, las cebollas rellenas, plato muy asturiano cuyo origen se atribuye a Aniceta Fueyo, popularmente conocida como La Nina, quien tras la Guerra Civil y en periodo de Cuaresma tuvo que agudizar el ingenio al verse, de improviso, obligada a servir un almuerzo a varios sacerdotes. Aniceta ideó rellenar unas cebollas con un sofrito de migas de bonito. Tal fue el éxito que, desde hace más de 40 años, coincidiendo con la festividad de San Andrés, El Entrego celebra su tradicional Fiesta de Les Cebolles Rellenes. Así que recuerde, el otoño o la seronda, como se le conoce en Asturias, si se degusta a fuego lento no hay pena o mal que no cure.

As in the rest of the Piloña municipality, the Villaviciosa Apple Festival rewards the quality of the produce on display. The most popular part of the festivities is when the Queen of the Festival, accompanied by bagpipers and local residents dressed in traditional dress, offers up the first unfermented apple juice of the season to Our Lady of the Portal. Following a visit to the ‘Municipality of Cider’, visitors might like to pay a visit to Cangas del Narcea and its famous Harvest Festival. From 9th to 12th October, 2015, visitors to Cangas del Narcea will not only be able to enjoy its religious processions, but also visit local bodegas where they will learn about the difficulties involved in cultivating vineyards on a mountainside and why this practise is known as viticultura heroica (heroic viticulture). Of course, there will also be lots of grape treading and Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) wine tasting. Since a good wine always pairs well with a good cheese, our next gastronomic rendezvous will be Benia (Onis) on 25th October where visitors will find bagpipers, traditional dance groups and, why not say it, the best Xalda sheep. Home of the Gamoneu Cheese Contest, visitors will be able to try here some of Spain’s best handcrafted cheese. Gamoneu cheese is a delicious lightly smoked cheese with a thin, natural rind that is brownish with some bluegreen blooms of Penicillium around the edges. It is fruit of artisan craftsmanship and the painstaking care the Peaks of Europe cattle herders take of their animals. In this unique gastronomic tour of the Peaks of Europe, it is now time to visit the heart of one of Asturias’ largest municipalities: Navelgas, famous, amongst other things, for its Magic Night and Esfoyon and Amagosto Festival. Once the sun has set on the 7th November, the traditional husking of the corn will take place with neighbours meeting up to husk corn. After the husking, the ears of corn are strung along the corridors of the house and chestnuts are served as part of this popular custom. The

chestnuts, previously roasted in the traditional way, are served with freshly pressed sweet apple cider (must). The streets are covered with straw and torches are lit. Residents dress up in ancient costumes and neighbourhood associations take charge of organising food and drink for visitors: pancakes, chestnuts, corn pastries, stuffed bread rolls, freshly churned butter etc. These get-togethers are considered important social events with people of all ages coming together to chat, sing and maybe even find love. Our gastronomic tour ends in the basin of the Nalon River or, to be more specific, in San Martin del Rey Aurelio where tribute is paid to two local dishes: turnip stew and stuffed onions. If anyone knows anything about turnips, it is the residents of Sotrondio, famous for their turnip festival which is normally celebrated around 11th November, considered an authentic feast of the gods thanks to the quality of its seasonings. While in San Martin, visitors will find another Asturian gastronomic speciality: stuffed onions, a typical Asturian dish, the origin of which is attributed to Aniceta Fueyo, known popularly as La Niña (The Girl), who after the Spanish Civil War had to sharpen her wits when she was requested during Lent to serve lunch to a group of priests. Aniceta came up with the idea of stuffing some onions with sauteed tuna fish. The dish was such a hit that over 40 years later, and coinciding with the festivities of El Entrego, the Stuffed Onion Festival has become one of the area’s most popular annual gastronomic events. So remember, autumn or seronda as it is known in Asturias, si se degusta a fuego lento no hay pena o mal que no cure... (if cooked on a low flame, there is no sorrow or illness that cannot be cured).

Viticultivo de montaña Pese a no ser una región con producción vitivinícola, la tradición enológica de la comarca suroccidental se remonta al siglo XI con la fundación del monasterio benedictino de San Juan Bautista en Corias, hoy convertido en Parador Nacional. Las necesidades litúrgicas de esta comunidad monástica contribuyeron a incrementar el número de viñedos y multiplicar la superficie de terreno dedicado al cultivo de la vid en los valles de los ríos Navia y Narcea dando origen a lo que hoy se conoce como ‘Viticultivo de Montaña’.

Mountain viticulture Not particularly well known as a wine-producing region, the tradition of winemaking in the southwest of Asturias actually dates back to the 11th century when the Benedictine monastery of St. John the Baptist, today home of a magnificent Parador hotel, in Corias was founded. The liturgical needs of this monastic community contributed to the increase in the number of vineyards and surface area used for winemaking in the valleys of the Navia and Narcea rivers, giving rise to the practise known as Viticultivo de Montaña (Mountain viticulture).

Un pequeño territorio en extensión que está salpicado de espectaculares paisajes. Bosques de alta montaña y de ribera, prados, lagos, ríos y cimas por doquier donde conviven en armonía una rica y variada flora y fauna, si bien la máxima representación de la exuberante naturaleza leridana la encontramos en la zona de alta montaña de los Pirineos con el Parque Nacional de Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici, que este otoño cumple 60 años de su declaración y es el único parque nacional de Cataluña. El Pirineo leridano alberga también los parques naturales del Alt Pirineu y Cadí-Moixeró, así como la reserva de caza de Boumort. El Parque Nacional de Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici celebra este año su sesenta aniversario con una veintena de actividades conmemorativas de tipo lúdico, didáctico y cultural. Declarado parque nacional el 21 de octubre de 1955, Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici se ha convertido en uno de los principales activos naturales del Pirineo leridano. Con una superficie de 14.199 hectáreas, más 26.773 de la zona periférica, repartidas entre diez municipios de las comarcas del Pallars Sobirà, el Pallars Jussà, la Alta Ribagorça y la Val d’Aran, constituye la representación más genuina de la alta montaña. This small province, situated in the Autonomous Region of Catalonia, is packed with spectacular scenery. Alpine and riverside forests, fields, lakes, rivers and mountain peaks abound together with a large variety of extraordinary flora and fauna. The epitome of Lleida’s lush nature, however, can be found in the above-mentioned Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park which will, this autumn, be celebrating its 60th anniversary. During a visit to the Lleida Pyrenees, visitors should also look out for the magnificent Alt Pirineu and Cadi-Moixero nature reserves and Boumort National Game Reserve. This unique Catalonian national park will be commemorating its 60th anniversary with some twenty recreational, didactic and cultural events. Declared a national park on 21st October, 1955, the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park has, over the years, become one of the Lleida Pyrenees’ main tourist attractions. Carros de Foc, la gran ruta El Parque Nacional de Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici se puede recorrer a través de numerosos itinerarios, si bien una de las travesías que en los últimos años están acaparando mayor atención es la denominada Carros de Foc (Carros de Fuego). La travesía consiste en recorrer los nueve refugios de montaña del parque practicando el trekking. Para realizar la ruta completa se puede escoger la opción de 5 ó 7 días pernoctando en los refugios con guarda de la zona y viviendo en directo una aventura en plena naturaleza. Desde hace unos años también puede realizarse la ruta “Pedals de Foc” (Pedales de Fuego), que consiste en recorrer el área periférica del parque nacional en bicicleta todo terreno (BTT). protagonista de esta reserva natural donde encuentran refugio especies como el rebeco, el urogallo, la marmota y el mítico quebrantahuesos. Este espacio natural, único por la majestuosidad de sus paisajes y por la riqueza de la flora y la fauna que alberga, está sembrado de abetos y bosques de pino negro centenarios. Una de las actividades más demandadas en la zona es el senderismo, dado que los excursionistas pueden acceder con facilidad a diversas montañas próximas a los 3.000 metros de altitud, como el Montardo, el Peguera, los Besiberris y el Comaloforno. Otro atractivo para el visitante de esta zona única, además de la flora y la fauna, es la observación de cómo los glaciares del cuaternario han ido dibujando el relieve del granito y las pizarras que conforman el substrato y los valles en forma de U. En los últimos años, el número de visitantes que se han acercado a este espacio natural no ha dejado de crecer hasta llegar a los 485.935 visitantes en 2014 —un 12% más que el año anterior—, de los que un 18% eran extranjeros. Chariots of Fire Nature Trail The Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park offers visitors a network of exciting nature trails such as the Carros de Foc (Chariots of Fire) nature trail which has, over the past few years, displayed an important rise in popularity. This mountain trail is home of nine mountain shelters. For those wishing to travel the entire trail, reservations can be made for 5 or 7 overnight stays in the secured shelters where visitors are guaranteed a genuine adventure in nature. accesos, entre los que destacan dos por ser los más frecuentados, el acceso desde Espot (Pallars Sobirà), que es la puerta habitual de entrada al sector más oriental del parque, el de la zona de Sant Maurici, y el acceso desde Boí (Alta Ribagorça, donde se encuentra el conjunto de iglesias románicas declaradas Patrimonio de la Humanidad el año 2000), que permite adentrarse en el sector occidental o de Aigüestortes. Otro punto de interés desde el que visitar el Parque Nacional de Aigüestortes es el teleférico, que permite ascender en menos de un cuarto de hora desde el lago de Sallente hasta el Estany Gento. Al teleférico, que constituye uno de los atractivos turísticos del Pallars Jussà, se puede llegar en coche. El parque nacional es todo un referente en la protección y conservación del patrimonio natural y cultural de los Pirineos, así como un motor socioeconómico para el desarrollo de las comarcas y los pueblos de montaña. Fue el primer parque nacional del Estado en obtener la certificación Q de Calidad Turística, en 2006, y este año 2015 ha renovado este reconocimiento después de pasar con nota muy alta (9,4 sobre 10) la auditoría de renovación de la certificación. Además de la certificación Q de Calidad Turística, el parque nacional tiene otros reconocimientos, como las certificaciones ambientales EMAS e ISO 14001.

unique for the splendour of its landscapes and wealth of flora and fauna, is also home of an extraordinary number of fir trees and centennial black pine groves. One of the most popular activities here is, without a doubt, hiking thanks to the nature trails located on and around the local mountains some of approximately 3,000 meters high such as the outstanding Montardo, Peguera, Besiberris and Comaloforno. During a visit to this unique area, visitors will be able to see for themselves how the quaternary glaciers have formed the granite and slate that make up the area’s substratum and U-shaped valleys. Over the past few years, the number of visitors to the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park has increased with a total of 485,935 visitors being recorded during 2014 (a 12% increase on the number of visitors recorded the previous year) of which 18% were foreigners. The Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park provides visitors with a variety of access points to the park that include the access point at Espot (Pallars Sobira) providing access to the eastern side of the park, the one at Sant Maurici and, finally, the one at Boi, in the district of Alta Ribagorça, perfect for visitors wanting to visit the western side of the park and its outstanding network of Romanesque style churches declared a World Heritage Site by the Unesco in the year 2000. The park can also be accessed by cable car with visitors being transported from the Sallente Reservoir to Lake Estany Gento in just 15 minutes. The cable car, considered one of the district of Pallars Jussa’s most popular tourist attractions, can be reached by road. The Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park is also an important reference point with regard to the protection and conservation of the natural and cultural patrimony of the area and as a socioeconomic motor for the development of the different districts and municipalities of the Lleida Pyrenees. It was also the first national park to receive the Q for Tourist Quality Mark received in 2006 and has this year qualified once again, having achieved 9.4 out of 10 points in its favour. In addition to the Q for Tourist Quality Mark, the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park has also been awarded other standard certificates such as the EMAS and ISO 14001.

European Junior Rangers The Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park anniversary celebrations include the 5th Ethnographic Film Festival on show at a variety of different venues at which a number of documentaries with almost unprecedented historical images of great documentary value will be shown. The programme of events also includes the Pyrenees Scientific Meeting and European Junior Rangers Meeting. The park will also participate in events organised in collaboration with the regional Department of Planning and Sustainability aimed at people with disabilities and school groups, events such as the National Park Research Conference; 2nd International Europarc Federation Youth Camp and Interpreter-Guide Meeting. Visit the Vivanco Wine Museum in Briones, considered one of the best wine museums in the world. Situated in the middle of a vast area of vineyards, visitors can learn everything there is to learn about wine here. Its art and archaeological collection alone are worthy of a visit with exhibits dating back to the Egyptian, Phoenician and Roman periods. Visitors will also find works by artists such as Picasso and Sorolla. The museum has an excellent programme of activities for children.

HYUNDAI i40 CrossWagon Versatilidad con estilo Texto / Text: Manuel Muñoz.

La gama de turismos de Hyundai tiene en el i40 CrossWagon el complemento perfecto. Se trata de la variante familiar del modelo de cuatro puertas. Un vehículo capaz de combinar de una manera más que acertada todo el carácter e identidad estética de su berlina por excelencia, con la capacidad y modularidad interior de esta configuración ranchera. El i40 CrossWagon incorpora la nueva imagen de la familia Hyundai, caracterizada por la rejilla hexagonal frontal. Otros detalles como los también remodelados paragolpes delanteros, los faros antiniebla led integrados o los actualizados faros contribuyen a poner al día una imagen que se puede calificar como una de las de mayor atractivo y personalidad de su segmento. El habitáculo también ha sido renovado con la utilización de materiales y un nivel de acabado de mayor calidad. Además, puede equipar nuevos elementos opcionales como calefacción en el volante o un sistema de navegación actualizado con pantalla TFT táctil en color y de siete pulgadas. Sin duda, uno de los puntos fuertes del i40 CrossWagon es la excelente habitabilidad interior. A la espaciosidad disponible tanto para los pasajeros de las plazas delanteras como de las traseras se le une una capacidad de carga de lo más satisfactoria, con 553 litros de maletero, que puede ampliarse hasta los 1.719 litros si se prescinde de la banqueta. Asimismo las operaciones de carga y descarga son especialmente fáciles gracias a que la distancia al suelo es la más baja de su segmento —solo 592 milímetros—, y a la posibilidad de montar el Smart Power Tailgate; un sistema inteligente de accionamiento eléctrico del portón trasero que hace que se abra automáticamente cuando el conductor se aproxima a la parte trasera del vehículo con las llaves en el bolsillo. Esto facilita la carga, sobre todo cuando se tienen ambas manos ocupadas. La gama i40 CrossWagon está compuesta por un total de cuatro motorizaciones diésel o gasolina, en un abanico de potencias de entre 115 y 141 CV, y cuya principal novedad es la incorporación del optimizado cambio automático DCT de siete velocidades en el propulsor 1.7 CRDi.

Stylish versatility Hyundai’s range of touring cars is now perfectly complemented with the 140 CrossWagon. It is a family version of the four door model. This vehicle is more than capable of combining all the character and aesthetic identity of the sedan par excellence, with the capacity and configurable modularity of this estate design. The i40 CrossWagon features the new image of the Hyundai family, characterized by the hexagonal radiator grill. Other details such as the remodeled front fenders, the built-in LED fog lights and the upgraded light cluster help to make this car one of the most attractive models in the segment with its unique personality. The inside has also been renewed using higher quality materials and finish. Furthermore, it can be fitted with new optional extras such as a heated steering wheel or the updated, seven inch, colour TFT touchscreen satnav. Undoubtedly, one of the i40 CrossWagon’s strengths is its excellent interior habitability. The spaciousness for the front and rear seat passengers are no set back for the more than satisfactory 533 litre trunk, which can be increased to 1719 liters if we fold away the rear seating. Likewise, loading and unloading the trunk is particularly easy thanks to the height from the floor, which is the lowest in the class, just 592 millimeters, and the possibility of fitting the Smart Power Tailgate – a smart system that operates the tailgate electronically to automatically open it when the driver approaches the rear of the vehicle with keys in pocket. This makes loading much easier, especially when both hands are full. The i40 CrossWagon is available with four diesel or petrol engine options, with powers ranging from 115 to 141 hp, with the main novelty being the inclusion of the optimized automatic shift, seven-speed DCT 1.7 CRDi power unit.

El catálogo del Mustang cuenta con la variante de carrocería fastback cupé además de la descapotable que responde a la denominación de convertible. Pure thoroughbred The Mustang is undoubtedly one of the great icons in the history of automobiles. A model that can boast about being one of the most acclaimed sports cars in the world. The oval firm has now recovered all the essence of one of its legends with a new, advanced sixth-generation Mustang. Manufactured at the Flat Rock factory in Michigan, USA, Ford’s thoroughbred is a modern vision of the audacious American Muscle Cars. Designed from scratch, the new Mustang brings back the sporting character of its ancestors, whilst maintaining some of the key design elements of the classic models to make it unmistakable, such as the long, sculptured hood, short trunk, low roof and wide threebar, three dimensional rear light clusters. As could not be otherwise, this model features the trapezoidal radiator grill, adapted to new times, and is still presided by the Mustang, the wild North American horse. The Mustang catalogue features the fastback coupe version, as well as the convertible. There are two different ways of enjoying the engine alternatives offered by Ford, a 2.3 EcoBoost yielding 317 jp and the 5.0 V8 producing 418 hp in the GT version. Both power units can be fitted with a six speed manual shift gearbox or an automatic. For the most demanding drivers, Ford has already announced an exclusive Shelby GT350R version producing 500 hp. As for equipment, the Mustang is fitted with 19” wheels, a competition brake package, automatic HID headlamps, LED rear lights and a rear spoiler, all as standard equipment. Regarding comfort, it includes items such as split zone climate control, sound equipment with 9 speakers and SYNC2 voice connectivity with 8” touchscreen. The Mustang is available in a range of ten colours, including the exclusive racing orange colour and the triple yellow.

Skoda Superb Skoda lanza la tercera generación de su berlina de representación. El Superb se sitúa de esta manera como el buque insignia de Skoda. Realizado sobre la plataforma modular MQB del Grupo Volkswagen, asienta sus 4,86 metros de longitud a lo largo de una cuidada terminación estética. En el interior destaca la excelente habitabilidad de la que pueden disfrutar sus cinco pasajeros. Un espacio en el que se ha cuidado hasta el más mínimo detalle tanto a nivel de soluciones de conectividad como de confort y de transporte de equipaje. Cabe destacar la capacidad de su maletero, que va de los 625 a los 1.760 litros. La gama Superb cuenta con tres variantes TDI de 120, 150 y 190 CV, y una de gasolina de 150 CV. Todos los motores están disponibles con el cambio DSG de doble embrague y, los tres más potentes, con la tracción 4x4.

Skoda launches the third generation of its representative sedan. The Superb is positioned as the Skoda’s flagship. Built on the modular platform MQB by the Volkswagen group it measures in at 4.86 metres long featuring great attention to aesthetic detail. Inside the car the excellent habitability stands out, designed for five passengers. This space has taken into account all the fine details concerning connectivity solutions, comfort and luggage transport. The capacity of the trunk ranging from 625 to 1760 litres is particularly noteworthy. The Superb range has three TDI versions producing 120, 150 and 190 hp, and one petrol version producing 150 hp. All the engines are available with the DSG twin clutch shift and the three most powerful versions are available with four wheel drive.

Aumento de vuelos y destinos Air Nostrum ha ampliado su catálogo de destinos y ha multiplicado su número de operaciones este verano. Solamente en el mes de agosto, la compañía programó 6.925 vuelos, lo que supone un incremento de más de un 6% en comparación con el año pasado. La mayor parte de estas operaciones se diseñó para atender la demanda vacacional en las semanas centrales del verano, del 22 de julio al 1 de septiembre. Destacan especialmente las rutas que conectan los archipiélagos balear y canario con ciudades peninsulares. Otro apartado reseñable es el de los vuelos internacionales. El programa de Air Nostrum para agosto incluía 1.630 vuelos internacionales, lo que representa un aumento de algo más de un 5% con respecto a los operados en igual periodo de 2014. Este tipo de operación resulta muy frecuentada por los españoles en sus viajes vacacionales a países limítrofes, fundamentalmente Francia, Italia, Marruecos y Portugal. Este año hemos estrenado rutas como Alicante-Carcasona, Madrid-Faro o los enlaces de Perpiñán con Madrid e Ibiza, y hemos retomado las conexiones que tan buen resultado ofrecieron el año pasado con Split, Olbia, Palermo, Nápoles, o Madeira. Pero también hay rutas que colaboran decisivamente a la entrada de turistas en nuestro país, como los vuelos que conectan Lisboa con Menorca y Mallorca, o Niza con Málaga o Mallorca, además de los habituales desde ciudades francesas a Madrid o Sevilla y de las conexiones interoceánicas que llegan a través del hub de Iberia en la T4. Este año las aerolíneas del grupo Iberia ofrecemos 119 destinos en 43 países de Europa, América, África y Oriente Medio.

l avión es como una máquina del tiempo moderna, capaz de hacernos avanzar o retroceder en nuestras vidas en cuestión de horas. La única que puede darnos tiempo vital, quitárnoslo —y con las mismas— hacer que lo recuperemos. De ahí que haya 93.000 vuelos diarios surcando los cielos de todo el mundo. Un aparato que no deja indiferente a nadie, y que levanta odios y pasiones. Están aquellos que tienen pánico a salir de su zona de confort y elevarse a miles de metros de altura, o aquellos que disfrutan de la sensación adrenalínica que se vive en el momento del despegue. No hay término medio. Y aquel que le diga que ‘ni fu, ni fa’, no le dice del todo la verdad. Yo soy de los fans, digámoslo así. Aunque tampoco me duele en prendas reconocer que presenta algunas incomodidades: el aeropuerto suele estar lejos, hay que estar varias horas antes, los controles de seguridad, las interminables colas en algunos mostradores… Sin embargo, le veo otras cosas que compensan todo lo anterior. Por ejemplo: las relaciones personales que se crean a bordo. Recuerdo un viaje a Roma, en plena adolescencia, en el que una concejal del Ayuntamiento de Sevilla me trató como si fuera mi madre. Les cuento: me quedé dormido nada más subir al avión, y ella se ocupó de despertarme para que eligiera el menú de la comida, después para que comiera, y como aún tenía sueño para echarme una siesta, cuando aterrizamos, tenía encima una manta que había pedido a la tripulación “porque me pareció que tenías frío”, me dijo. ¿Quieren otra demostración? La de una azafata que, en una escala en Filadelfia rumbo a Madrid, se ocupó de ayudarme a recuperar mi pasaporte. Me lo había olvidado en el primer vuelo, y tenía que volver al avión a recuperarlo. Algo que se imaginarán, y más en Estados Unidos, es harto complicado. Ella se ocupó de hacer las llamadas, lograr que me dejaran retroceder sobre mis pasos, llegar al aparato y recuperar mi documentación. ¡Menos mal que aún no lo habían limpiado! Si no, ya me veía allí haciendo noche y llamando a la embajada. Piénselo. Fíjese a su alrededor. Ya verá cómo la gente entabla relación entre sí, aunque no se conozca. Dos viajeros a cada lado del pasillo que intercambian revistas, otros que hablan de las travesuras de sus hijos o, simplemente, comentan si les gusta o no la comida de a bordo. Es la magia del avión. Capaz de unir destinos y personas. Gente que aparentemente no tiene nada que ver, pero que se une durante unas horas para evitar la soledad. ¿O no? Quizá les he mentido al principio. Quizá nos unimos porque todos —aunque digamos lo contrario— tenemos un poquito de miedo a estar en las alturas. Quizá, lo que buscamos en el otro es la calidez humana para hacernos más fácil el viaje en el tiempo. Piénselo, hable con su compañero de asiento, reflexione… Y feliz vuelo.

eroplanes are like modern time machines, able to take us into the future or past in a question of hours. It is the only machine able to provide, withdraw or recover vital time. You can find approximately 93,000 aircraft flying through the sky every day. The aeroplane is a machine that invokes both hatred and passion, leaving no one indifferent. There are people who panic when out of their comfort zone and others who enjoy the adrenalin rush during take-off. There is no middle road. Those who say it makes no difference to them one way or the other might not really be telling the whole truth. I would describe myself as a fan although I do not mind admitting that flying does have its inconveniences: airports are generally far away; you have to be there hours before your flight, airport security, endless queues etc. Yet, I am also aware of the advantages such as the relationships established during a flight. I remember as an adolescent, a Seville town councillor took me under her wing during a flight to Rome. Once aboard, I had immediately fallen asleep. The town councillor woke me up so I could order my food and again when it arrived. After we had eaten, I decided there was still time for another nap. Upon arrival, I found she had covered me with a blanket she had requested from one of the flight attendants because, as she explained, “you looked cold”. Would you like more proof? It was something that happened during a flight change in Philadelphia on my way back to Madrid. A flight attendant helped me get my passport back. I had left it behind on the previous aircraft. To recover it, I had to get back to the aircraft as soon as possible. A complicated procedure, especially in the United States, as I am sure you can imagine. The flight attendant kindly took care of the necessary telephone calls to get permission for me to be able to retrace my steps, board the aircraft and recover my passport. Thank goodness they had not started cleaning! I had pictured myself calling the Spanish Embassy and having to stay overnight. Think about it. Look around you. You will likely see people entering into a relationship even though they are strangers like the two aisle passengers exchanging magazines, others talking about the antics of their children or the quality of the flight food. It is the magical effect of the aeroplane, connecting people and destinations, people that apparently have nothing in common, coming together for a few hours to avoid feeling lonely or maybe not. It could be that I lied at the beginning; maybe we connect because we are all a little afraid, even though we deny it, of being so far above the ground. Perhaps we are looking for some human warmth to make our journey in time easier. Think about it, discuss it with the passenger next to you, reflect and, of course, have a wonderful flight.
