MIPTV programme of events provided 10,000 delegates from 102 countries with a unique menu of learning, networking and deal-making opportunities in Cannes this week. “The consumption of entertainment content around the world has never been higher. The search for content that will attract and maintain audience loyalty has never been fiercer. What has become evident is that in the search for great content, the way shows are funded is evolving,” commented Laurine Garaude, Reed MIDEM’s Television Division Director. Traditional sales activity remains at the heart of MIPTV but the lines between producers and distributors are blurring as distribution companies are investing in shows at every stage of the production timeline.

Médailles d’Honneur to Four Big International Audiovisual Leaders

M

IPTV gave the Médailles d’Honneur, its prestigious award for senior TV executives, to Pascal Breton, CEO of France’s Federation Entertainment, Teresa Fernández-Valdés, an executive producer at Bambú Producciones in Spain, Izzet Pinto, founder and CEO of Global Agency in Turkey, and Weidong Yang, president of Youku, Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment Group in China. The Médailles d’Honneur is given to “senior executives who have, through their talent, leadership and passion, made a significant contribution to the world of television and the development of the international TV community,” according

he International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the winners of the 6th International Emmy Kids Awards at a ceremony at MIPTV, in Cannes. Winning programs from Canada, France, Germany, Norway and the United Kingdom are: “La Cabane à Histoires” (The Treehouse Stories) (Kids: Preschool); “Revolting Rhymes” (Kids: Animation); “Berlin und wir” (Berlin and Us) (Kids: Factual); “Snapshots” (Kids: Non-Scripted Entertainment); “Club der Roten Baender” (Red Bracelets) (Kids: Series); “Jenter” (Young Girls) (Kids: Digital), and “Hank Zipzer’s Christmas Catastrophe” (Kids: TV Movie/Mini-Series). “The programming kids watch every day has a major influence on their behavior and views of the world”, said International Academy President, Bruce L. Eccho Rights Launched “Conspiracy of Silence” in Cannes B

rand new Viaplay original series had an exclusive premiere screening at MIPTV, giving international buyers a first opportunity to see the series before its launch later this year on Viaplay’s platforms across Scandinavia. Produced by Brain Academy, “Conspiracy of Silence” is a thrilling drama that shines a light on the corrupt Swedish weapons industry. The series highlights both the shattered personal lives that the weapons business leaves in its wake, and the moral hypocrisy that allows the trade to flourish. The Global Power of the Most Popular Turkish Drama G lobal distributor ATV made a special screening of the new Turkish drama hit: “Lifetime”. The event took place on Tuesday in the Auditorium K. Muhammed Ziyad Varol, Licensing and Digital Manager Acquisition & Sales, Platforms at ATV, made a specil presentation after the screening of the first episode of the series. The executive highlighted that “Lifetime” is now the show with highest ratings in Turkey during the past six years. The impact of the series also reached social media, cautivating users on different platforms. Originally titled “Sen Anlat Karadeniz”, the drama reached almost 34% share, winning the most competitive slot of the week on Wednesday prime time. Moreover, the first episode of “Lifeline” was watched more than 3 million times in one week on YouTube and became a trending topic in Twitter. “Lifetime” tells the story of Neefes, a child bride who was sold to a businessman. Captured by her husband, she has become the victim of violence with her son. She failed to escape from her husband, Vedat, and every try resulted negatively. Nefes struggled to explain every beating of Vedat to her son, trying to convince him that this is just a game. Nefes’ brother, her only relative, has died when rescuing her. A businessman from the Blacksea region, Mustafa, travels to Istanbul to make new agreements with Vedat and he brings his family along with him. Mustafa and his family stays in Vedat’s

van after leaving home and start a new life with her son. But things don’t go as planned, Nefes and her son fall asleep in the back of the van. They find themselves in Trabzon, Blacksea. Tahir discovers these two fugitives in Trabzon and he doesn’t have a clue that he’ll get into a big battle to save them.

“Black Money Love” Arrives to Atresmedia in Spain D uring MIPTV, Inter Medya confirmed that they closed an agreement for “Black Money Love” (Kara Para Ask) with Spain’s Atresmedia. The series will go on air on one of Atresmedia’s channels. Produced by Ay Yapim, which is behind popular series such as “Endless Love” and “The Pit”, “Black Money Love” features a strong cast including Tuba Buyukustun and Engin Akyurek, who was nominated in the Best Performance by an Actor award at the International Emmy Awards in 2015. Can Okan, Founder and CEO of Inter Medya, said “Following the success of Turkish series in more than 130 countries, this is a very important step for us as we bring Turkish content into the European market. “Noobies”, Chosen by The Wit as One of the Most Original Fictional Series T he “N00Bees” series has been included in the Fresh TV Kids Live-Action Scripted Series, a conference about the most original productions that are setting new trends in children’s fiction in the international market, offered by the prestigious consultancy firm The Wit. The gaming fictional series, produced thanks to the recently announced agreement between Nickelodeon Latinoamérica and Mediapro Group, will consist of 60 1-hour episodes and will premiere in September 2018. “N00Bees”, created by Flipy from 100 Balas production company, will be shot in Spanish in the facilities owned by Televideo, a member of Mediapro Colombia, for the Nickelodeon audiences in Latin America, and will be adapted to Portuguese for Brazilian audiences. “N00Bees” is an original show that introduces the exciting world of the Professional Video Games League in a youth world. It follows the story of Silvia, her brother Erick and their friends Tania, Pablo and Niko. Silvia has never been interested in video games. She has always preferred the outdoors and playing her favorite sport, basketball. She is the total opposite to her father, Hector, and her brother, who are very passionate about video games. When Erick has the opportunity to make his biggest dream come true, taking part in the E-Sports Championship, Silvia will do anything she can to help him, even if that means she must also become a professional gamer. Together with their friends, Silvia and Erick create N00Bees, an e-sports team that will compete to win the Professional Video Games League title, but it won’t be easy. The show will start production in May and it will debut across the region in September on Nickelodeon Lationamérica. TV Azteca to Remake Dori Media’s “Lalola” D

ori Media Group has clinched an agreement with TV Azteca for its daily drama Lalola. The series of 150 episodes was produced in 2007 by Dori Media Contenidos. “Lalola” is based on an idea from Sebastian Ortega for Underground Contenidos. Dori Media will have exclusive distribution tape rights for the new remake. Nadav Palti, CEO of Dori Media Group, commented: “We are delighted to see another sale of Lalola to Mexico after its production a decade ago. Not only is it highly replicable as a format, but it also is an exceptional [concept that] has the potential to completely redefine the changing role of strong women in society in these exciting times. Lalola is one of our strongest formats with a more than ten-year proven track record, and we expect it to have a number of remakes in the future. TV Azteca is a great place to create and adapt foreign formats. Nippon TV and Medyapim Celebrate the success of “Mother” and “Woman” A t a joint conference held in Ankara, Turkey, executives from Nippon TV and Medyapim came together with the Japanese Embassy in Turkey and Ankara University to celebrate the success of “Mother” (Anne in Turkey) and “Woman” (Kadin in Turkey), two of Nippon TV’s most successful dramas that have become mega hits in Turkey. In attendance were Mr. Akio Miyajima, the Japanese Ambassador to Turkey, Mr. Fatih Aksoy, CEO of Medyapim, Ms. Ozge Ozpirincci, lead actress of Kadin, Ms. Kako Kuwahara, Managing Director of Nippon TV, and the three creators of Mother and Woman, including Mr. Hisashi Tsugiya, Producer, Mr. Nobuo Mizuta, Director and Mr. Yuji Sakamoto, award-winning scriptwriter. The event was held at Ankara University where dignitaries, press, and students from the communications department, were in attendance to hear the Japanese and Turkish creators discuss their views, beliefs, and experiences in what it takes to create a hit drama series that is appreciated and enjoyed around the world. A video was shown comparing the Japanese version and the Turkish version highlighting the similarities and differences between the two dramas and how each producer adapted the story to coincide with their local viewers. “It was an honor for me to share my passion for Mother and Woman with this wonderful group in Turkey. Fremantle Partners With Working Title Television for “The Luminaries”

remantleMedia International has partnered with Working Title Television and Silver Reel TV to take the international distribution rights for “The Luminaries”. The six-part drama is written by the award-winning novelist Eleanor Catton, and being produced by Working Title Television in association with FremantleMedia International and Silver Reel, for BBC Two.

Marcus Wolter to become CEO of newly created Banijay Germany B

anijay Group announced that Marcus Wolter will become CEO of the newly created Banijay Germany from August 2018. In this new role Wolter will oversee all of Banijay Group’s operations in Germany including Brainpool and Banijay Productions Germany. Formerly Endemol Shine’s Chairman Northern Europe and CEO Germany, Wolter

will also become a shareholder of the group in Germany. Keshet Partners With YTV Japan to Develop Non Scripted Content K eshet International announces that it has inked a deal with Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation (YTV) in Japan to co-develop non-scripted content, with the aim of creating an international format with global appeal. The deal, which is the first of its kind between Keshet International and YTV, further strengthens KI’s presence in the Asian market. The agreement covers the development of at least one non-scripted title, to be developed this year, with the potential to extend the agreement to develop further formats. The companies will jointly own the format created, which will pilot on YTV within six months of completion. Gary Pudney, Head of Asia, Keshet International said: “We are thrilled to be collaborating with YTV to co-develop non-scripted content in Japan. We hope that this new agreement signifies the first of many to come in the region, and the start of a long and mutually beneficial relationship, as we continue our commitment to expand our presence in Asia.” Akito Sasagawa, International Sales Manager, YTV added: “We are excited to develop non-scripted content with Keshet International. Keshet has a strong presence in the Asian market, with a number of its hit formats and premium dramas enjoying success across Asia. Xilam’s Comedy Animated Reboot of “Mr Magoo” Heads to CITV

ilam Animation has sold its brand new 2D animation series, “Mr Magoo” (78 x 7’) to UK commercial channel ITV for both its terrestrial channel and CITV branded digital channel. Serbia’s PRVA1 to produce two additional seasons of Viacom’s “Graduados” S

erbia’s PRVA1 will produce two additional seasons of “Graduados”, a co-production with Telefe, a Viacom International Media Networks company, Underground and Endemol. The Serbian adaptation is titled “Istine i lazi” (Truth and Lies). “Graduados” tells the romantic comedy of high school friends who reunite 20 years later. Since its launch in September 2017, Istine i laži (Truths and Lies) has remained within the Top 10 most watched shows in Serbia. And in recent weeks, it has become the highest rated prime time show, coming on top of its competition. Furthermore, it’s expected that PRVA1’s version of the show will end up with even more episodes than its original Argentine format. “This format is the perfect combination of a great story and great characters, which keeps our audience laying in wait for the next episode, and it also has comedy, which makes it perfect for the masses. Graduates is the perfect choice for families, and it’s a story that can easily be adapted to different cultures and markets,” said Katarina Pavlovic, director of Programming at PRVA TV. “We are very proud that Graduates was the first Latin American show to be adapted by PRVA1. rmoza Formats has closed their first deal for new factual entertainment format, “The Surprise Teacher”. The local rights to the format have been taken by French Canadian production company Avanti Ciné Vidéo. The agreement was signed on the first day of MIPTV. The format was originally produced by Palomar Productions and will air on Italy’s Rai 2 during prime time starting May 16th. “The Surprise Teacher” (60’) is the inspiring factual entertainment show, where each week a new celebrity will surprise a class of high school students as he disrupts their usual studies with a once-in-a-lifetime experience. What the students believe is set to be just an ordinary day turns into a lesson they will always remember when the celebrity becomes their substitute teacher, giving them a master class that reflects his passion and experiences. Through this unique perspective we are given the rare chance to look into the hearts and minds of the country’s young generation as they get ready to embark on their life’s journey in a rapidly changing world. all3media international is partnering with FLX, C More, TV4 and Filmregion Stockholm - Mälardalen/ Film Capital on major new coproduction Blinded, it announced today, marking the company’s first major investment in Scandinavian language drama. The new partnership will see all3media international joining the coproduction on Blinded, which will

commence filming later this year, and distributing the drama in the global market. Based on the book by awardwinning investigative journalist Carolina Neurath, Blinded is a thriller inspired by real events, set in Stockholm’s financial quarter. The eight-part drama follows journalist Bea Farkas as she reports on a bank engaged in questionable activity – reports that will put a lot of people at great risk, in a world where status is everything and nobody is blameless. FLX is co-developing the series with local streaming service C More and Swedish broadcaster TV4. Blinded is directed by Jens Jonsson (Easy Money 3) and written by FLX’s Jesper Harrie (The Bonus Family, Solsidan), alongside co-writers Maria Karlsson (Easy Money) and Jonas Bonnier (The Helicopter Heist). “TV4 and C More have a strong track record of launching successful Swedish drama series and original productions. We love that we have a smart, intelligent young woman in the lead role and that it is based on a true story.
