ROB DYRDEK Less Ridiculous Than You Think Words by Brian Terhorst Rob Dyrdek is a self-made American success story. In just two decades, he’s rapidly evolved from an innovative and influential pro skateboarder to a dynamic serial entrepreneur, pop-culture personality and ground breaking media impresario.

You probably know him from Rob and Big, Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory and Ridiculousness. Rob is also the founder of Street League Skateboarding, which helped turn street skateboarding into a respected professional sport.

His dedication and love for the sport inspired him to create the SLS Foundation (formerly called the Rob Dyrdek Foundation), whose mission is to contribute to communities by providing the healthy and sustainable benefits of skateboarding to design, develop, and construct safe and legal skate parks around the world.

Now, Rob is combining his passion for skateboarding and mentoring by taking part in the launch of a national campaign that helps kids across the country lead fun and active lifestyles.

Lunchables Lunch Combinations announced the ‘renovation program” aimed at upgrading and refurbishing Clubs for Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) as part of its partnership with the organization. To kick off the program, Dyrdek’s SLS Foundation and the Lunchables unveiled a newly upgraded skate park in San Diego.

We had the opportunity to catch up with Rob & fired a few questions at him.

RIS: Mornin’ Rob. What has you up at the butt crack of dawn & talking to the media?

ROB: Yeah... first cup of coffee. So, I want to talk about the club renovation program that I’m doing with Lunchables & BGCA. Not sure if you know, but I have a web series called ‘Fully Uploaded’ - We profile the stories of inspirational individuals & how they came up. Guys like Kawhi Leonard to LeSean McCoy... Dude Perfect or young Jagger Eaton, the skater phenom.

Basically the renovation program is an extension of that. We were able to build a skate park at the BGCA in Chula Vista. It’s kinda bringing awareness to this program & ultimately how Lunchables has committed to donating a Million dollars over the next couple of years to help renovate BGCA. RIS: You get behind some great causes Rob, It’s great to see these kids off the streets & in these parks... keep ‘ em focused on something positive.

ROB: Yeah, I think the BGCA takes that to another level with their mentorship & by inspiring these kids & giving them purpose. That’s what I love about the program. We give them a great (proper) place to skate. It’s gonna be another reason for them to get there & hopefully keep them out of trouble. More than anything, give them the right direction & guidance. Ultimately, to lead a better life.

RIS: Again, we appreciate how you help out these young people, take em under your wing & mentor them. Along those lines, lets discuss Street League. How was this season compared to past seasons?

ROB: We finished this season with a dream scenario. Nijah Houston wins it on the final trick of the tour to take the championship. Really excited that we had the Pro Open this year & were able to watch guys like Trevor Cole & Matt Berger win their way into the league. Heading into next year we are planning on creating a global qualifying system that will lead to a true world championship for next year in New York. Just continuing to evolve & elevate skateboarding and evolve the league.

RIS: How does the Qualifying system work?

ROB: Basically, we’re gonna do Pro Open qualifiers all over the world with amateur qualifiers (in some locations) leading up to them. Ultimately whoever wins those contests will join the other 12 Street League pros, to create the field at the World Championship. So we can truly declare a World Championship... and lay the groundwork ultimately, for the qualification system to the Olympics one day.

RIS: Wow, that sounds amazing Rob... taking it to the entire world. One thing that stands out to us is your motto ‘Run by skaters, for skaters’ We have a similar motto w/ the Revolt Surf Series ‘Run by surfers, for surfers.

ROB: Yeah, so I think that you guys will understand & have a lot of clarity on the aspect of why we’re trying to build that ‘lower level’ tier, so you can ‘skate your way’ into the league. In the past, you knew who the best guys were... but there was no clear way to ‘skate your way’ in, as opposed to simply being chosen. That’s our long term goal, to even partner with the ‘Skate’ version of you guys (RSSS) so whoever wins that series... would make their way into the Pro Open series... and would then have a shot to make it into the League. But we’re trying doing that on a global level, so that there truly is an organized path to the highest level of street skating..

RIS: Who do you see as the next generation of street skating?

ROB: No matter what, Nijah is gonna be the force to be reckoned with, for a really long time. But I love guys like Ashad Ware for how exciting & original he skates. Luanna Alverra is one of my favorites from Brazil. He literally looks like he’s skating with magnets on his feet, he has so much control. The big surprise for us this year was a young guy Matt Berger who rides for Flip. He came outta nowhere, made his way into the championship. He’s a perfect example of skating your way thru the qualifying system & really deserving to be there. Shining at the highest level... the future of skateboarding is brighter than ever RIS: Before I let you go, let’s talk about MTV ROB: Just did a deal for a whole lot of episodes. We’re doing an encore season of Fantasy Factory that comes out in the Spring. We’re shooting the sixth season of Ridiculousness in the Spring. Right now were doing season five along with Snack Off - a cooking competion show that my production company ‘Superjacket’ produced. We’re really looking forward to producing additional shows in the coming years on top of Ridiculousness & Fantasy Factory RIS: What keeps you centered & keeps it all in perspective?

ROB: I live a pretty balanced life. As hard as I do work & as many things that I do... I still take a lot of time to stay physically strong. I really just try to get the proper rest. I don’t run myself into the ground. I can kinda tell when I’m like getting a little worn out... I’ll push some meetings back... or sleep in for a day.

I’m good at managing how I feel. Have a goal of feeling great & you ultimately just get a lot more done.

RIS: I know you spend a lot of time w/ others, helping them out... but who is your mentor?

ROB: Ah man... at this point in my life, I take my mentors so serious. I literally have a mentor for almost every aspect of business. Amazing mentors, from Richard Branson to guys like Lorenzo Fratitas & Dana White from the UFC who have been immensely helpful for me. Not only in assisting me in the FOX sports deal but also enlightening me on the pitfalls and pluses or negatives with the stuff they’ve gone thru. I’ve really learned the value of talking to people who have experienced what you may be trying to do.

You learn so much more from someone that actually lived through it, as opposed to, ya know, just going out on your own or just hoping that you’ll figure it out on your own.

year ago we found our way inside the incredible new craft beer mecca Barrel Republic on Garnet Ave. We knew it was someplace special after meeting General Manager Robert Kilborne. He gave us a tour of the venue, showed us how to get a wristband, properly prepare a glass and then pour your own beer... yes, I said pour your own. The wristband allows the tap to open & the pourer (you) the freedom to pour as little, or as much as you desire. We were hooked. We catch up with Robert & his new Head Chef as they begin year two.

Belching Beaver - Blushing Beaver - 6.0% Alc India Red Ale - a true masterpiece. With plenty of Cascade hops, this brew is sure to please any hophead, while its complex malt profile will keep “big beer” drinkers coming back.

Robert: “We actually served 1000 beers in 2014. We didn’t set out to hit that number, but that’s where we are. We did 24 barrels a day on average during Beer Week.

When you’re known for your vast array of self serve craft beers and you introduce craft beer inspired food into the picture, it’s only natural that you pair the two together. Barrel Republic has come up with the Perfect Pairings. Thanks to Head Chef AG Warfield and Sous Chef Brandon Dodge, pairing food with excellent craft beer has never been easier or more enjoyable.

I spoke with AG & here was his vision for the new menu: AG: I like to call my food Beer-centric. It’s what I would want to eat while drinking craft beer. Coupled with fresh seasonal ingredients. Several menu items change with the seasons as well as with my East Coast & Maryland influences. Our pairing is actually two-fold, meaning, there is actual craft beer in many of the recipes, then there is the pairing of a dish with an appropriate beer after it has been prepared.

“It’s all encompassing, what we do here. Fresh seasonal ingredients. Fresh, often seasonal, craft beer. Core items like our fresh sausage will always go hand in hand with our beer, so four rotatating types of meat sausage plus two vegan choices will always be on the menu. My Maryland Burger, Our incredible Wings & the Barrel Burger will always be offered but look for our specials to change often.”

Impacting human health and causing billions of dollars of economic damage. However, a cleanup of our oceans has always been deemed impossible, costing billions of dollars and thousands of years.

19-year old Boyan Slat disagrees. His solution is a concept to passively clean the oceans of plastic in just several years’ time. The concept would utilize the natural currents to let the oceans clean themselves, in what would become the largest cleanup in history. With the support of over 38,000 funders from 160 countries, in 100 days over 2 million was raised for The OCEAN CLEANUP Team. US CREATES WORLD’S LARGEST MARINE SANCTUARY Pacific Ocean - President Obama signed a proclamation in late September, to create the world’s largest marine sanctuary in the Pacific Ocean in a bid to protect sea life from climate change, Millions of seabirds, sea turtles and marine mammals live in the bio-rich expanse included in the reserve, where rare or undiscovered species are frequently found.

The Concept consists of an array of floating barriers that passively catches and concentrates the debris, and a ‘collection’ platform that efficiently extracts the debris. The ocean current passes underneath the barriers, taking all neutrally-buoyant sea life with it, preventing bycatch.

The Ocean Cleanup works to develop the world’s first feasible method to clean the gyres of plastic, including the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - one of the 5 areas called ‘gyres’ where ocean currents converge, concentrating plastic pollution.

D anny Way is considered the most influential guy

in skateboarding history. To anyone who wouldn’t already acknowledge that Danny Way is one of the greatest skateboarders ever: he actually isn’t. Danny Way is the greatest skateboarder ever - period.

While filming his latest video ‘Truth’ he took the time to share his thoughts with Revolt In Style on his life, fatherhood, perceptions and a cause that is close to his heart.

RIS: Who has been your biggest influences in life?

DW: My dad, step-dad Tim and Mike Ternasky. Mike was a guy I met when my skateboarding career started to take off. He was a friend of pro skater Tony Matheson. Tony and Mike collectively started a skateboard company (Plan B) together and recruited me as one their riders when I was a little kid.

From that point on I built a father-son relationship with Mike. I was such a little kid. I didn’t have any parents around ever. Mike filled those shoes. I started traveling young. I traveled quite a bit. I wasn’t home from the age of 13... till now. But now, all of my mentors have since passed away (which adds some irony to my story). It’s kinda weird when your mentors are gone.

RIS: With your mentors being gone, who do you look to for advice now?

DW: I have a couple of good friends, my mom, and my girlfriend. My children are a good reflection of advice sometimes. But for the most part (you know) I’m in that age bracket where I have to be that guy for other people.

RIS: How old are you?

DW: Just turned 40.

RIS: What advice would you give your 15 yr old self?

DW: Let me think about that. There is a lot of things I would have given myself advice on. Hard to say there are so many things, but one thing …

I wish I would have paid attention to the damage.

The physical stuff I was doing to myself at the time. I have a lot of long term injuries from when I was younger. I took my health for granted - thinking everything would eventually heal. If I would have known all the things I know now, I could have prevented a lot of those injuries. But that’s one thing I have learned a lot about being an athlete. I have been doing this for about 25 years. Longevity is important to me… and taking care of yourself.

RIS: Most positive memory from childhood?

I had a pretty bad childhood. My most positive memory growing up was associated with skateboarding. That was my everything. Going to the skate park was like a kid experiencing Christmas. I got that same feeling every time I would go - or the accomplishment I would feel from learning something. The reward I would get internally verses the stuff that was happening at home. I grew up in a household with domestic violence - stuff like that, so skateboarding was the positive thing.

RIS: what is something you do every night?

Stretch.

RIS: What is the first thing you do when you wake-up?

It depends.... I have alternate weeks with my kids, so during school week I wake up around 6:30 to get the kids ready for school, but the first thing I do is I stretch. I stretch before I go to bed and I stretch when I wake-up. Those are my rituals that I do, even before I brush my teeth.

RIS: What do you do on your days off?

Right now, I’m making this video called True, so it’s been (skateboarding) full on, as far as my physical aspect, it’s 100%. It doesn’t get any more challenging on that level. So, days off… is not being on my feet for a little bit. I like to break up my worlds… skateboarding has been my life. So, on my days off I like to do something that doesn’t have anything to do with skateboarding. Like spending a day with my girlfriend or hang out with my kids… doing whatever. I just try to do something besides skateboarding.

RIS: As you’re filming True, are you constantly challenging yourself - continually trying to top yourself or do you think like that? Do you feel that pressure?

Yes. I have been living in that mental vortex of internal completion every day on this project. Some days I feel inspired and capable and some days I look in the mirror and question myself. Sometimes it’s day to day, and sometimes it’s minute to minute. Every time I go to a session, I’m trying to create something new that hasn’t been done before. So that my fans, Plan B or our skateboarding brand will not see anything less than the progression of skateboarding at this point. If we do anything less than that, it’s really going to representation of our brand and the guys that are a part of our brand. As far as feeling the pressure… that’s the universe I live in always… and that’s a vicious cycle sometimes - having to out-do myself.

RIS: What do you do when you doubt yourself and how do you bring that confidence back?

Sometimes… literally not think about it for a couple of days. Shut it all off. I consider it like little battles I create when I’m trying to learn something.

And it’s an on-going battle… It’s hard to walk away from something when you haven’t accomplished it & you have invested several days and physical energy or the amount of abuse you’ve taken already to try to figure it out. I will sleep over it.

Sometimes it works when you least expect it.

When that happens…it’s magical and it doesn’t feel like it takes any effort… sometime it takes way more effort than you ever thought. Trying to not doubt yourself is hard. I never consider myself not capable. Just sometimes you know start to give in to the doubt then I convince myself to go back.

RIS: Definition of a legend? um… when I think of a legend the first thing that comes to my mind is Ozzy Osborne. But, I guess… someone who shouldn’t be alive anymore? Someone that has done so much or someone who has made such an impression on so many people…. it almost seems like the person is a super human.

RIS: Worst injury?

I have had multiple injuries which had added up to create long term problems. Aside from the sixty orthopedic surgeries I have had; I had a bad neck injury when I was twenty that caused some neurological problems. That was probably the worst injury I have had because there was no answer.

No one gave me any solutions. No concrete hope that I was going to heal and be normal again, so that was a pretty hard one to overcome mentally. No one gave me any hope or any security that I would be healed after a year of chasing every path of someone knows this person or that person. Western and Eastern medicine. I did everything. Then getting over the concept of having this limitation and paralysis for the rest of my life. Anyway that was the hardest injury I ever had and I met someone at that time Paul Chek... There you go! A mentor. He still is the biggest mentor in my life, that I look up to for my physical well being.

RIS: What is something you always wanted to do and haven’t yet?

I have done almost all the things I have wanted to do. I wanted to learn how to fly helicopters, but that is expensive. I’ve done a lot in my lifetime already. I’m sure there’s a lot if I sat back and really thought about it, but off the top of my head…

I feel pretty complete. It’s a good place to be. I guess.

RIS: What is your biggest fear?

My biggest fear is not being capable to take care of everybody that I can take care of.

RIS: Describe the mega compound.

A property in Kauai that was specially purchased to build a mega ramp. I wanted a place to build a mega ramp - to stay permanently. Other than those temporary locations - where we waste the money invested (which is substantial). We wanted a piece of land where I could experiment with things.

A place where I know that if I built something, it would have a permanent home. So that’s where I’m with that. Little by little, trying to build out all this property… like a skateboarding Utopia.

RIS: Biggest ramp you have ever built?

Hawaii is the tallest; China was the biggest horizontally RIS: Skaters you look up to?

One of my favorites.. Christian Hosoi. Great human being.

There are a lot of others on a personal level…Colin Mckay, who is also a business partner with the founder of DC. I’ve known him since we were little kids… and he has progressed the sport. There are the group of guys that skate for Plan B (which i am flattered to have them involved) Which is the whole reason I got involved is because of this group of guys.

Guys that I look up to, like Ryan Sheckler, Torey Pudwill… a whole bunch of guys. At this stage of my life, it’s amazing to have a team of such talent that are dedicated to this brand and the progress of skateboarding.

L

ead vocalist Matt Burke of Vokab Kompany is building a greater sense of community among bands in the San Diego music scene. After meeting Burke, I had the unique opportunity to interview Santa Barbara’s up-andcoming reggae group, Iration. I spoke with Joe Dickens, drummer of Iration, to explore the band behind the music.

Backstage, I scope out the free-flowing vibes radiating from Santa Barbara’s unique beachy blend of reggae, rock, and pop: Iration. The vibe: relaxed and welcoming. Friends and friends of friends become new friends, kicking it backstage in a cozy trailer that somehow has enough seats for everyone.

But that seems to be the way Iration does it. Their message is simple: keep it positive, and roll out the “luv.”

Their bright future began with light-hearted playing back in Hawaii with high school friends. “It was the very first time I heard reggae,” says Dickens.

IRATION NOTHIN’ BUT LOVE “It kinda just hit me and when we started playing music, that was the natural thing to play.”

When the band started out in 2002, they never expected to make it big. But they put themselves out there, just doing what they love: making good music.

From casually playing in friends’ garages at Isla Vista, to producing their first sample EP, to selling out their first concert, to gaining worldwide recognition as the 3rd biggest reggae group on ITunes, Iration has come a long way. All thanks to that island passion and the love that keeps on rolling.

You can see it in the way they perform.

You can see it in the way the crowd is pumping. Together, one musical heartbeat. Iration’s easygoing attitude shines in their music.

“We create music for everyone,” says Dickens. “Micah writes lyrics from the heart, and from his own personal experiences, you know?” Anyone who listens to Iration can feel the love.

“Good things have happened and bad things have happened, but it’s not what happens to you,” says Dickens. “It’s how you deal with it.” It doesn’t really matter if the song is about a breakup or chasing your dreams, Iration’s positive attitude plays on in the music they give to the world, and they’re hoping to give a lot more.

These are some amazingly humble guys, and they’re making a difference without even realizing it. They’ve come far in their careers musically, and they’re making an effort to reach out to their fan base collectively, to strive for a greater push in giving positive vibes to the less-fortunate. “We try to support causes via social media, and we’ll give out concert tickets for fans who support food drives and help in other charity events,” says Dickens.

In the crowd, waves of smoke billow overhead and everybody’s swaying to the rhythm of poppy acoustics and Micah Pueschel’s smooth vocals. Everyone seems to be having a good time.

That’s exactly what fires up the band

members when they’re getting ready for a show.

“When the fans leave the concert, we want them to leave feeling better about themselves,” says Dickens, smiling. “We want our fans to spread random acts of kindness, love, and good deeds.”

Every musician has obstacles, and Iration is facing theirs head-on. They strive for self-improvement as musicians, and the best way they do that is practicing and keeping their ears open to new, eclectic inspiration while staying true to their reggae roots. They say, “Never stop playing, and don’t be afraid to play different types of music.” They’re taking their sound to new places in the future, and keeping the uplifting vibes flowing free. “We want to go all over the world,” says Dickens. “Europe: that’s the next level.”

Iration’s sound is just a love train that keeps on. Adam Taylor, bass, puts it simply: “We’re all about the luv.”

fter many years playing together in the band “Diego Roots” the singer Chris McConnaughey and guitarist Ryan Kelley decided to part ways with the band and joined forces with Clay McCallum, Bucky Springmeier and recently acquired drummer Dave Steward. COASTAL FREQUENCY DEEP ROOTS IN SAN DIEGO We dug in a little deeper with Chris, here’s what he had to say.

RIS: Why the change from Diego Roots to Coastal Frequency?

CM: Considering that there is only two Original Band Members from Diego Roots remaining and still playing music together, we felt that it was an important step in order to get a fresh start moving forward.

Besides those that were fans of Diego Roots would be able to connect Coastal Frequency once they hear the music.

RIS: They say, “What’s in a name”? Is there a meaning behind Coastal Frequency?

CM: To all of us in the Band, the name Coastal Frequency depicts the vibe here in San Diego, which along with many great musicians has been a major contributor to our musical direction. The hot sun, blue skies and the beach lifestyle can be a great jumping off point for feel good music no matter where you reside.

RIS: What style of music are you going for?

CM: Surf / Rock / Reggae In short, we believe we want to have our own sound, or own style of music. Playing on the California Coast we recognize how much it has influenced us as musicians. We look to continue on in that direction with the help and support of loyal listeners and fans, both past and present.

RIS: Who’s influenced you through the years?

CM: The Legendary Bob Marley, Steel Pulse, Sublime, The Police, Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson just to name a few. Not to mention San Diego’s Own Slightly Stoopid, whom you’d have to be living under a rock not to recognize what those guys have been able to accomplish! Totally Inspiring for us as musicians.

RIS: What are some of your up coming plans with the band?

CM: Start with finishing our first full-length album as Coastal Frequency. Set up a West Coast Tour, hopefully followed by an East Coast / Pacific Island Tour.

RIS: What can we expect from your live performances?

CM: A high-energy show from start to finish. We pride ourselves on trying to interact with the crowd as much as possible; again we feed off the crowds’ energy. We are all there to have a good time, but it’s our job to create the environment to do so with good music, an entertaining show and positive vibes.

RIS: You have an up coming show at Wonderland OB. Do you have anything exciting planned for that night?

CM: We will be stripping down our set with acoustic instruments and a Digital Drum Set. We wan to play a full set in more of a raw form to showcase the music. We also felt like a live acoustic set would be an up close and personal setting for the room / venue of Wonderland.

an Diego has such a rich history in the live music scene and Brick by Brick is one of few that have stood the test of time. Originally called The Spirit back in 76’; the venue brought in, at the time, the top music acts of its day. Acts from R.E.M. in 83’ & INXS in 85’, to Faith No More, 10,000 Maniacs, Henry Rollins Band & Primus just to name a few. The Spirit ran for nearly two decades. It became Brick by Brick in 95’. The genre changed a bit, but you could still see some of the greatest artists. Bands like The Black Keys, Kid Rock, Thin Lizzy, Black Label Society, Megadeth and even the legendary Ronny James Dio have all graced the stage.

New owners Phil Sgrosso, Nick Hipa and Jordan Mancino former member of the band As I Lay Dying, have made it their mission to create a venue where you can expect to see not only local but regional bands as well.

With music styles ranging from metal, punk, indie, ska, reggae, country, and rockabilly, they plan on bringing in a little of something for everyone. I sat down with Phil to find out a little more about their plans for the venue, so after a few Saint Archers, here’s what I found out: RVLT: How did it come about that you guys took over Brick By Brick?

PHIL: Our close friend Alice Stinnett, who used to book at The Scene back in the day, reached out to us after Max, the previous owner, contacted her about selling Brick By Brick. Alice was interested in booking shows again and Nick, Jordan, and I were interested in finding other investments to be a part of. From our experience playing music in venues across the world, it seemed like the right sort of opportunity to get into.

EVERYTHING FROM THE OWNERS ON DOWN RVLT: With such a rich history here in San Diego, what plan do you have for the venue?

PHIL: We’re hoping to make it a positive experience for everyone who walks through the door, from the bands that play our stage to the patrons looking to be entertained for the night. The room has so much potential and we’re trying to be creative and come up with new ideas to improve it in every way possible. Besides cleaning up the place and adding a fresh coat of paint, we also upgraded the audio system, resurfaced the stage, improved the lighting, added more local craft beers/drink specials at the bar, as well as many other improvements. Where we’re at right now is just the beginning but so far it has made a big difference in a positive way.

RVLT: You’re planning on having “Free” music nights, tell us more about this?

PHIL: We’re gonna be having nights that are free entry and so far one of those ideas is Metal Mondays.

With our background in the metal scene, we thought this would be a fun way to be engaging with the metal community. Metal fans can come and hear some good tunes, enjoy drink specials, and mainly just chill with like-minded music fans.

RVLT: Any exciting bands coming up in the near future?

PHIL: We’ve got Strung Out playing December 13th and we’re all really excited about that show. They were a big influence on my guitar playing when I was a teenager so to have them come and play my own venue is amazing.

That’s essentially the reason why we bought the venue, to see bands we love!

RVLT: Tell us about your new band, Wovenwar?

PHIL: After the fallout with our previous band As I Lay Dying, the remaining musicians decided to stick together and search for a new singer to work with. Our old friend Shane Blay was interested in working with us and that’s sort of how it all started. We signed with our same label, Metal Blade Records, and we recorded our debut album with our same producer, Bill Stevenson. We kinda just picked things up where they left off and we’ve been out on the road in the states and Europe since August with plenty more touring ahead of us.

RVLT: What tours coming up?

PHIL: We’ll start the new year off with Periphery and Nothing More in the US followed by some touring overseas and hopefully big US tours in the Spring and Summer. We’re really looking forward to getting back and playing SoCal, especially San Diego of course.

RVLT: Where do you hope to be in the next several years? i.e. band, venue etc?

PHIL: I think we all just want to make a living off music and always improving with both the band and venue.

Who knows what else we can get involved with in the future. I think just being a part of something you love should be the ultimate goal in life.

RVLT: Any shout outs?

PHIL: Just thanks to anyone who’s been to the new Brick and has spread the word about it. We’re excited to take it over and really make it something special for the bands and music fans of San Diego.

Interview by Brian & Leslie Terhorst Photo by Leslie Terhorst To simply call Urijah Faber an MMA fighter is much like calling Joe Frazier a boxer. There is so much more to this guy than meets the eye. Yeah, he’s the former WEC featherweight Champion of the World, yeah he’s the Alpha Male Team leader, & yeah, he’s on TV more than most politicians.

But he’s also a businessman, a mentor, a true patriot and an icon - simply put... a very cool guy.

He has an impressive record with 32 wins, 7 losses & zero draws. The former featherweight champ (145 pounds) has dropped to the 135-pound category or ‘Bantamweight’ & at age 35... he’s in the best physical shape of his life.

Urijah has been steadily working his way back to the top... and looking forward to the much anticipated rematch with Dominick Cruz (He’s the only man to ever beat Cruz at featherweight).

We had a chance to meet up w/ Urijah on the Bay. We ran alongside him while he paddled & fired questions at him till he fell in...

RIS: What’s been happening w/ you?

UF: This past year was a big year for me - I fought 5 times in 13 months. It was a pretty intense year.

Losing a title shot to Barao, which was pretty unfortunate. I took that fight with three weeks notice. That was B.S. really.. but you can’t complain. You cant dwell on stuff like that.

My last fight was against that younger kid, ‘Bruce Lee Roy’, Alex Caceres. He was tough. Coming off like a five fight winning streak. Had to put some pressure on him, but in the process I got kneed during the fight in the ribs. Thus, the injured ribs now. Can’t train fully right now.

RIS: Hows the team doing now now?

UF: Team Alpha Male has been kicking butt. It’s grown into a pretty big team. I think we have 8 guys in the UFC now. That’s pretty cool. We have around 40 up-and-comers.

We’ve picked up a lot more notariety with TJ Dillashaw becoming our first UFC World Champ. That’s HUGE. He’s a guy that’s come up from the very beginning of our program.

RIS: What are you doing in San Diego?

UF: A Friend of mine is an oral surgeon. I’m gonna be helping him open up an office complex with other dental professionals.

I think theres going to be six other dentists & surgeons in the building.

RIS: You’re into a lot of different things, like the new clothing line. How’s that going?

UF: It’s going really well actually. I kinda butt heads with my partner. He’s a body builder from New York. This line was his Idea, but I get final approval on all designs, so that’s cool. I also have a manager up in L.A. He & I have been working on a lot of entertainment stuff over the years. I’ve got the gym in Sacto.

That’s going really well. It’s cool they’ve been using the gym as sort of a representative of Sacramento. Like the Kings and Team Alpha Male. We’re bringing recognition to the city, really having a positive effect. The gym is in the heart of mid town Sacto & we have a ton of general members. Then there’s a small town up on the Northern California coast near Fort Bragg, called Point Arena.

I have an old building there that we have developed into a private retreat gym for myself & my guys... I just try to stay busy.

RIS: Let’s talk about your fighting career. What are your goals.

UF: My goal is always to be World Champion. Right now I’m number two in the world. You get in that title picture, you want to stay in there. It changes up though. Now one of my team mates, someone I’ve mentored for years holds the belt, RIS: Yeah, how does that work?

UF: I’ve only got a couple of years left for fighting. I’ll take who ever comes my way. So, we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. Until then, I’m just taking all the fights coming my way, that sound fun & are good opportunities & just puttin on a great show, ya know?

RIS: Anyone in particular you want to fight?

UF: Yeah, I still want that fight with Dominic Cruz. I think everybody wants to see that fight. Also, a rematch with Tom Barro would be interesting. I don’t think that fight did either one of us justice w/ the early stoppage.

Yeah, People want to see that TJ fight... we’ll see how that goes RIS: What do you think about Stand Up Paddle boards?

UF: Pretty cool.

KAI LEN Kai Lenny is the 2014 Stand Up World Tour Champion But that’s just for starters...

Kai Lenny is about as impressive as any waterman I’ve met to date. As I sat & prepared to write this piece, I looked online for any updates on his hectic schedule & world travels. I stumbled across a headline “Kai Lenny Shreds Hawaii Waves With Jet-Powered Surfboard” I had to look. It’s exactly what you think. Kai jumps off the back of a boat at Jaws with a new JetSurf in hand, feeds the throttle & fearlessly drops in on wave after wave. This on a massive day in mid November when the break was firing up to 50 ft. He then switches to a Stand Up Paddle board & catches an hour or so in the same conditions. I look more closely at his facebook & there ya go... he’s been chosen as an alternate for the Eddie Aikau Invitational. This kid’s life is about as awesome as it gets. I think we have a lot to see in the future from this young Hawaiian Waterman.

We sat with Kai Lenny while he attended the SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY Paddle Races in San Diego. Here’s what he had to say: RIS: Ok Basics first...

KL: Hi, I’m Kai Lenny, I’m from Maui Hawaii, I’m 21 years old

RIS: What do you do?

KL: I’ve been lucky enough to do all different kinds of watersports my entire life. Surfing, Kite Surfing, Windsurfing, Stand Up Paddling, Big Wave Surfing, Flow boarding, Tow-In surfing, Canoe Paddling... you name it & I’m luck enough to participate in all of them!

RIS: Dream Life bro. Do you have a favorite?

KL: It’s funny, ya know? I look at all these sports as a spin off of surfing. Surfing is kinda the core of everything I do. My favorite thing in the world is to ride waves. I like doing all these different sports cause it gives the sensation of always riding a wave. Even if I’m paddling a race board on flatwater... same sensation, as riding a wave. Moving across the water. I think that’s the coolest thing. It’s just addicting I’ve been at it since I was 4 years old. It’s who I am. I couldn’t imagine life without it. It would just be wrong!

RIS: Let’s talk about the World Tour. Thoughts?

KL: I always love competing in America. In California in particular. After traveling all over the world for the tour I was stoked to have won the wave event up in Huntington. Competing in the USA. Even though I’m from Hawaii in a way It felt like my home turf, ya know?

RIS: How many titles?

KL: Six Time World Champion. I’m stoked that I was able to finish off the year strong.

RIS: How do you train? Specifically for surf or race or just train for everything?

KL: Well that’s the thing, they’re both so different. It would be like training a Tour De France cyclist for an X-Games BMX event. That’s how different they are. I train for both. But I also train for the other sports... so it takes a ton of time. My time training is spread thin throughout all. The nice thing about doing all these other sports that I do - is - I feel they really benefit each other.

My surfing really helps my SUP surfing. My windsurfing and kitesurfing really help my stand up racing. Visa versa my stand up racing is the best conditioning for big wave surfing. If I just do stand up racing & then all of a sudden go surf really big waves, I will be as fit, if not more, than most of the guys out there. There’s nothing more gnarly than stand up racing every weekend...

Physically, it’s awesome!

RIS: Do you have a trainer or do you have a team?

KL: I’m lucky, I have a coach on Maui - he helps me out a lot. I’ve been with him since I was thirteen. I have a surf coach as well. I also have a lot of mentors that really look out for me. Obviously my parents, my mom & dad are huge supporters of what I do.

The thing is if you’re pursuing any professional sport (laughs) or pursuing multiple professional sports... you have to have a support crew. You can’t do it alone. It’s nearly impossible.

Guys like Robbie Nash, Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama, Jerry Lopez... just to name a few. Those guys have been mentors of mine growing up cause they’re all based out of maui (or used to be) They were always kinda steering me in the right direction.

RIS: Your list of mentors reads like a list of legends of Watermen. How cool is that?

KL: Yeah, so cool. They still give me guidance so it’s very special. They constantly offer help w/ their own experiences. Let me know what to do, or not do, to get to a certain goal faster & more efficiently.

I wonder what I did in my previous life or who I was, cause I’ve been givin the best life on planet earth...

I’m luck to be supported, do whatever I want, get paid incredibly well. But at the end of the day, it’s the people that I’m surrounded by. I always say “You are who you surround yourself with.” I’m surrounded by the best, nicest people.

RIS: Highlight of 2014?

KL: Craziest thing... I have so many insane experiences & won quite a few events this year - Everyday is amazing. A blessing to say the least. One of the best things so far has been riding really really big waves at home at Jaws. I think that was one of my top highlights this year. I really felt like I stepped up my game!

RIS: How Big? KL: Hard to say when your on the wave... but, 50 plus foot waves. Paddle in surfing and Stand up paddle surfing both. Like 8 hour sessions, best sessions ever. Towed out there one day in but otherwise paddle. Surf half the day then switch to Stand Up Paddle surf. Try to do it all.

RIS: Lessons learned?

KL: Winning is cool, but it’s really about the journey to get there. The hardship you endure. Training really does suck. You have to push so hard. All the sports are at such a high level now. You really hurt all the time. Afterwards, when I look back after a win, it’s like... man, I wish I would have enjoyed it more.

That was a fun experience.

We surf pumping Lowers till the sun’s down and the mosquitoes are biting. 'Mystery’ girl picks us up with a couple of friends . There isn’t enough room in her car so Breyden has to squeeze in the trunk.

After a quick shower, we all hit the town for all you can eat sushi and a couple rounds of saki to get things started. Then we all run amuck on the dance floor at Dukes and sing karaoke at Takayo till the wee hours of the morning and cap things off with a late night pier jump. We let Breyden out of the trunk and go to bed.

JL: Unfortunately I was only in town for one event this summer but the contests are incredible. It’s a very upbeat event which is refreshing, after countless monotonous weekend events. There’s nothing better than having a beach day with your friends, surfing a few heats and hopefully... leaving with a full wallet.

RIS: Are you down with the REVOLT SUMMER SURF SERIES in 2015?

JL: You know it

RIS: What inspires your artJL: I draw inspiration from everywhere, mostly I just love the process of watching a piece come together.

It usually starts with a simple idea or feeling. I usually spend at least 20 hours on a piece what keeps me going is that feeling of completion. When I’ve created something that has surpassed my expectations.

RIS: Artists that you admire?

JL: Monte Livingston, Peter Terrin, Brian Viveros RIS: What medium do you prefer.

JL: Surfboards are what I

got started on. I always love tagging up my boards but I prefer canvas, it’s much more permanent.

RIS: Where do you see your art taking you?

JL: I really haven’t giving it much thought. I’m still so new to it. I’m just trying to put out a lot of work and grow as an artist, surfer and a person.

In the past that logic has taken me some pretty amazing places.

RIS: Who do you want to give a shout to?

Local longboarders braved some epic surf & showed their ability to adapt in challenging conditions, with Chuda Isabella, Matt Dalton & Ricky Cunningham taking 1st, 2nd & 3rd for the day – Chuda being the Overall Season Winner.

Remy Juboori was killing it during the Juniors final and surfing extremely well all day! Remy got second in the expression session & won the overall Juniors title. – A good day for Remy!

hile the rest of southern California roasted in triple digit heat – Savy San Diegans headed to the PB coastline to watch their favorite local amateur & pro surfers compete for thousands in cash, prizes & custom trophies. Competitors were challenged throughout the entire day with beautiful 3-5 ft. surf on the south side of the Crystal Pier. – and the scores reflected it.

Twin brothers, Peter and Jack Stewart showed some good ‘ol fashioned sibling rivalry, competing against each other at each event this season – then putting it all on the line for the finals – Peter took the daily win & brother Jack scored the overall win – Scott, Seth & Ricky from Avasin Surfboards stepped up & both brothers wound up getting a brand new custom board. Sick!

While Vince Boulanger took the overall championship, JD Lewis ended up with the daily win. Vince was surfing extremely well all day… just had a shocker of a final and wound up fourth. But still, a deserving overall champ! His consistent riding and high scores through out the entire series secured his quest for the coveted title – Vince took home an awesome custom trophy by 760 display, a Kicker Audio Sound system & season lift tickets to Bear Mtn & Snow Summit. JD Lewis took home an over-sized check worth $1,000.00, a custom trophy by MakerPlace & a grip of cool swag & gift certificates from our sponsors.

Jr. Women found themselves in sizable surf with Kitsy Nipper and Allie James charging waves that their parents were fairly uncomfortable watching, in their final heat. First & second accordingly – An absent Sidney Johnson won the overall Jr. Women’s title.

Icaro Rodrigues, a stand out athlete – had the move of the contest for sure. Massive ‘Slob Air’ in round 1. He brings it and can pull airs with his eyes closed. Icaro won the expression session as well, with a ‘Superman’ air that had the entire beach on their feet cheering.

And last but not least, Liquid Foundation showed their loyalty to the series (original surf shop sponsor) & won Top Surf Shop honors!! Fun guys to have at the events! Check out the newly remodeled & re-imagined surf shop in Mission Beach.

Ed Custodio showed everyone that 40 is the new 20 – winning the Masters Division – What an epic guy.

The final event of the series ran on Saturday, October 4, alongside and during Pacific BeachFest. An estimated 70,000 people attended the massive festival with 3 stages of live music & entertainment, a fish taco food court, Dos Equis beer garden & hundreds of vendors. The RSSS is one of 3 signature sporting events that took place at the annual festival. The Healthy Souls Invitational Volleyball Tournament & a 5k run were also held on the sand.
