OUR FAVORITE FIVE STARS & DIVE BARS
DRAFT SO. MISSION 3105 Ocean Front, Mission Beach 858-228-9305
BEST DAWG & SUNSET
Located on the Mission Beach boardwalk, Eat Drink Sleep’s latest creation Draft is serving up around 70 beers on tap and 30+ bottles. Come hungry and experience a fresh take on casual dining - like the SD Dog - a bacon wrapped Nathan’s all beef dog, w/ hot peppers, spicy green sriracha & just a hint of cilantro. Whoa! Try the decadent Belgian cheese fries, topped with a sunny-side-up egg. Next up? Ahi poke w/ wonton on top. So fresh! Leave room for a dessert - the Lemon Merinque Milkshake & Churro Bites are crazy good! www.draftsandiego.com
BULLS SMOKIN’ BBQ 1127 West Morena Blvd., San Diego, CA 92110 619-276-2855
BEST BEEF RIBS & SAUSAGE
On the corner of Morena & Bueno Ave - this family owned joint is nothing shy of epic BBQ. Service is exceptional - the beer is cold & the food is dynamite! The secret to the GIANT beef ribs? The chef removes every other bone, leaving basically 3 portions on each rib. Smoked for hours to perfection. 3 mouth watering choices of sauce for spicy to sweet palates - Start with the Spicy Andouille sausage (always) & make sure to try the corn bread (suh-wheet) Dog friendly patio w/ giant screen for sports & movies - Great Happy Hour prices - Tell Tony we sent you. www.bullssmokinbbq.com
BACKYARD KITCHEN 832 Garnet Ave, San Diego, CA 92109 858-859-2593
BEST HOT WINGS & NIGHTLIFE
One of our oldest friends in the industry, Eric Leitstein (and company) opens another stylish location at the beach - I’d say a home run on Garnet Ave. Dog friendly patio w/ cool cabana style booths. Friendly (knowledgable) servers & great menus for both food & craft brews/drinks. Hot wings were just the right amount of smokey mixed w/ classic hot sauce - the ‘kicker’ is the size of these wings. HUGE! Also ravaged the Smoked Brisket Dip. Ridiculous! After dark the outdoor patio & 3 bars fill up with beautiful people entertained by local artists. www.backyardpb.com

BEST BURGER & PING PONG
San Diego Tax Man Dennis O’Connor has done it again - after his uber successful launch of Thorn St. Brewery & tasting room in North Park, he (& partners) bought up the divey Kelly’s Pub & transformed the venue into our new favorite for Craft Beers, great bar food & sports (both on TV and on the dog friendly patio) Ping Pong, Korn Hole & giant Jenga are just some of the highjinks you’ll encounter in this stylish new joint. Try the food. All good. Smoked pork tacos w/ some crazy heat will bring tears to your eyes. www.homeandaway.com
LTH + KITCHEN 308 S Coast Hwy Oceanside, CA 92054 760-547-1469
BEST TACO & TAP HOUSE
In the heart of Oceanside - Local Tap House - a different sort of pub & eatery - taking as much pride in sourcing local designers/contractors & artisans for the build as they do for sourcing local produce & seafood on the menu. Great take on a classic, with the 3 Crispy Calamari & Agave Bacon Street Tacos. Chef’s specials are simply incredible and change daily. Two thumbs up on the local craft beer selection. BAY CITY BREWING BREWERY AND TASTING ROOM OF THE MONTH BAY CITY BREWING COMPANY 3760 Hancock St, San Diego, CA 92110 619-727-4926 Bay City Brewery is focused simply, on beer... 100%. No Gimmicks. No tricks. They don’t give a shit about clever names, they don’t give a shit about adding things to their beer. They want their beer to taste like...beer. Cool by me. The new tasting room off the 8 - directly behind the Sports Arena on Hancock is a work in progress. Clean, stark, full of brewing equipment & not much else. Cool by me. Dog friendly, so you can bring your best friend & chill either inside or out back on the fenced-in outdoor patio. Food trucks & various caterers bring food when it is needed - otherwise...it’s all about the beer. Again, cool by me. Bay City Brewery has been operating at a grassroots level thus far, just selling their beer from the tasting room we visited & 30 nearby bar & restaurant accounts. Owners Benjamin Dubois and longtime Mcgregor’s Grill & Alehouse owner Greg Anderson have put their faith in Chris West as the Head Brewer & creative force behind the no-nonsense beers. Chris has a great outlook on their positioning among the hundred or so brewers in SD, ”We decided that instead of going elsewhere in the country & creating a San Diego style beer, we wanted to stay right here, open our doors & create the best San Diego beers possible”. Reasons for Bay City’s fast success - Chris’s knowledge he gained while working at Monkey Paw. Immaculate brewing conditions & the no shit attitudes. Combine that with a lot of positive word of mouth & social media and the highly visible location in Point Loma & you have a recipe for greatness. Follow Bay City Brewery on Facebook & Instagram @baycitybrewingco
BREWS BROTHERS
Try These: Coffee Pale Ale / Nitro - Simcoe Hops & Swell Roasters Coffee. Hints of fruit & infused with beans roasted down the street at Swell Coffee Co.’s Point Loma roastery. Nice & smooth on the palate thanks to the nitro. Vienna Lager - 100% Vienna Malt - hints of berries, bread & honey. Straight forward easy to drink single malt lager. BCB Stout - Grahm crackers & dark chocolate forward. Not meant to be sipped. You can actually handle a full pint of this stout without it being overbearing. Nitro Porter - Bay City’s hommage to Guinness. Think coffee, dark espresso forward - slight bitterness & Nitro smoothness on the backend. Belgian Dubbel - 7% abv - Their first crack at Belgian style beer - 3 different crystal malts make for a super complex malty brew w/ a sweet forward & a dry finish. San Diego Pale Ale - 7.7% abv - #1 Top selling Bay City Brew. Citrus & pine flavors forward. A perfect balancing act between hops & aroma. This is a great example of Bay City’s quality control. Take home a growler for the Holidays!

BEST NEIGHBORHOOD SURF SHOP LIQUID FOUNDATION 3731 Mission Blvd, San Diego, CA 92109 (858) 488-3260 Owner Matt Gardner has taken the legendary ‘LF’ surf shop in Mission Beach to new heights - by ditching the ‘Bad Boy’ surfer mentality for a more family friendly & community-first business ethic, Matt has reclaimed Liquid Foundation’s lofty position in the local surfing community. Since taking over Liquid Foundation, Matt has re-established the LF surf team, continually supports important local events (like the Revolt Summer Surf Series & the Jetty Kids surf contest) produces Art Shows & Beach Parties, all the while working hard to grow the LF Surf brand clothing and gear. The shop itself, features custom, new, and used surfboards and accessories. LF stocks numerous top tier brands like Reef, Electric, Carve, Futures Fins, Hyperflex Wetsuits, Sector 9 and GoPro, just to name a few. Local manufacturers are a priority too… Jim Ellington Surfboards, Freeligious clothing, Shackle Box & Dummy Mount are just a few local brands LF supports. Instead of dropping your hard earned loot inside those ‘Mall Surf Shops’… do the right thing & take a trip down to Liquid Foundation first. We bet you’ll find what you were looking for. HEY! BEST STAND UP PADDLE SHOP WESTCOAST PADDLESPORTS 4360 Morena Blvd. Suite 130 San Diego, Ca 92117 (858) 272-3278 Bob Long spent the majority of the 90’s & 2000’s as the gatekeeper to Bob’s Mission Surf in PB. A real ‘Mom & Pop’ style surf shop that he and his wife ran like a neighborhood surf shop should. Cool surfy stuff, casual atmosphere & steps to the beach. Bob knew all the surfers, shapers & basically anything going on in the surf community at the time. When Revolt In Style was a bit more risqué in the early 2000’s - we allowed a number of questionable advertisers in the mag… Bob said, “No Thanks” & kicked our butts out of his family friendly shop. We took it to heart & when we purchased the magazine in 2006, Leslie & I listened to what Bob was saying - that’s one reason Revolt In Style is the positive publication it is today. In 2005 Bob stood up & paddled his 1st board… & that was it - he sold the shop & set his sights on his new passion… Stand Up Paddling. In 2011 Bob Long and his wife opened up West Coast Paddle Sports on Morena Blvd. Inside the warehouse setting, WCPS offer the finest boards and paddles from the leaders in the Stand Up industry. Behind the giant roll up doors is 1800 square feet of everything you need for all SUP, PRONE & OUTRIGGER CANOE Paddle sports. They have a work space for customizing paddles and deck pads in a clean and professional environment. The shop has also become a destination for group gatherings, video screenings and even lecturers. West Coast has fast become the lead supporter in local (and not so local) paddle events. Presenting sponsor of the 2015 Sunday Sunday Sunday Paddle race series, as well as Paddle for a Cure & the Hanohano Huki Ocean Challenge. They support a number of events in North County, Orange County, Lake Tahoe & Arizona. This past November saw Bob, his wife, daughter & son in law Sasha Unruh take over the Annual Turkey Paddle Potluck with all proceeds going to the San Diego Canoe and Kayak Team. A ton of canned goods were collected for the San Diego Food Bank & nearly 100 athletes showed up to race & work off some of the Turkey feast from the day before (Thanksgiving)

Below is the GoPro Hero4 Session, the fifth and newest member to the company’s current line-up. It packs the power of GoPro into their smallest, lightest, most convenient camera yet—featuring a rugged and waterproof design, easy one-button control, 1080p60 video and 8MP photos.
THE HISTORY OF GOPRO How Nick Woodman built the POV camera market and became a BILLIONAIRE 2001
Nicholas Woodman has a vision to develop a wrist strap that could tether cameras to the wrists of surfers. He takes these first prototypes with him on a surf trip to Australian and Indonesia. There, he tests his wrist strap with different cameras, later realizing that he also has to sell the camera and a waterproof housing.
2003
2008
Woodman introduces the wide-angle lens giving users that distinct panorama shot that is now one of GoPro’s signatures. The company also begins marketing GoPros as mountable devices, allowing people to now film themselves by attaching their cameras to ski poles, car frames and surfboards.
2010
After writing the patents and legal documents from his 1971 Volkswagen Van, Woodman creates Woodman Labs, the parent company for what we know today as GoPro. In GoPro’s early days, Woodman slept out of that van while marketing the cameras on business trips.
GoPro takes the jump to high definition with the Hero HD (1080p) opens up new markets for GoPro. The company ends 2010 with revenues of $64 million, more than tripling sales from the year before.
2004
GoPro announces that its strategic invest from five venture capital firms including Riverwood Capital, led by former Flextronics CEO Michael Marks, and Steamboat Ventures, Disney’s venture investment arm.. The total investment is pegged at about $88 million. GoPro introduces the Hero2 with an 11-megapixel camera, improved low-light capability and 1080P video at 30 frames per second. The company ends the year with revenues of $234 million.
Woodman sells his first cameras to surf retailers at the Action Sports Retailer Convention in San Diego. Although the 35mm Hero was originally built for surfers, Woodman eventually branched the product out into other action sports like snowboarding.
2005
GoPro sells about $350,000 worth of cameras. Woodman hits this goal by selling to surf shops and specialty sports boutqiues as well as appearing on QVC three times.
2006
After being encouraged by friends to make the transition to digital, Woodman introduces the Digital Hero - The camera shoots VGA video in 10 second bursts and has no audio recording ability.
2007
The Digital Hero 3 improves by capturing activities with unlimited video and audio.
PRESENT - GoPro launches the HERO4 line. Capturing 4K Ultra HD video and liquid-smooth slow motion at up to 240 frames per second, HERO4 Black delivers higher performance than any other GoPro to date.
MAKE IT EVEN BETTER
Multiple aftermarket companies sell cool gear to take your video to the next level!
2011
2012
GoPro introduces the smaller, lighter HD Hero3 with three different camera types, including the $400 black edition which now has 12-megapixel photo capability and 1080p video at 60 frames per second. Chinese electronics manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., better known as Foxconn, makes a $200 million investment for 8.88% of the San Mateo, Calif. camera firm, making Woodman a billionaire. The company ends the year with sales of $521 million.

WHAT DO ACTOR SCOTT EASTWOOD, PRODUCER/DIRECTOR SCOTT MORTENSON, PADDLE PHENOMS SLATER TROUT & IKAIKA PIDOT AND SUP INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS MARC MILLER & AUSTIN COX ALL HAVE IN COMMON? A taste for adventure & tha’ balls to paddle some of the most remote & rugged California coastline. Interview by Leslie Terhorst The eclectic group of athletes, actors, media & paddle industry professionals, set out late summer, just equipped with the bare necessities to paddle, camp under the stars & capture the imagination of all you adventurers out there. We caught up with ringleader Austin Cox & the lads... Here’s what they had to say: RIS: What made you decide to paddle Big Sur? Austin: Since I was a little kid I have always been fascinated by Big Sur’s beauty and isolated coastline. It has always been a dream of mine to travel that coastline with my friends and once I started working at Isle they made it possible!

RIS: How did you all meet? Austin: Scott Eastwood and I grew up in Carmel and have been friends ever since. Eastwood introduced me to Scott Mortenson a couple years back and he is a jack of all trades; this guy has done every job under the sun and is now going to school to get a Masters Degree in Genetics. Ikaika Pidot is one of our newest Isle Ambassadors who definitely has a bright future in paddling. Ikaika is definitely a guy you want on any trip, he’s a super intelligent waterman and the most stoked and positive guy out there! I reached out to Slater Trout because he’s an amazing photographer and of course one of the best standup paddlers in the industry. Slater took all the photos from the trip. Marc Miller is my boss and has more paddle experience than any of us, the guy has been all over the world and was amped off this trip.

RIS: NorCal can be pretty unpredictable with its weather and ocean conditions. Did you plan on a certain time of the year or did you just wing it? How was it? Austin: Since this coast is so unpredictable, isolated and super dangerous you have to make sure you at least the swell and wind on your side or it can get really risky. August tends to not have a lot of swell and the weather is usually sunny so we picked a date that worked for everyone and went for it. Of course after that everything else was out of our control so we put the rest in the hand of fate. Luckily for us the first two days were ideal but our third day could’ve been real serious but we got out in time!
standing up, paddling through their territory. Scott E: Yeah we saw almost every wild life creature there is. We were on the tip of the red triangle so it was only fitting that we come in contact with a great white. It wasn’t my first time seeing a great white, they are usually just curious. Marc M: I would say the most stunning view was paddling from around a corner of rocks and seeing a several hundred foot freshwater waterfall spilling off the side of a rocky mountain bluff into the
Slater T: We saw a ton of sea life during the trip, everything from Jellyfish to Sharks and Whales. Scott M: Seeing a juvenile great white in the wild was a pretty wild opportunity. It was a strangely, peaceful moment. That’s the nice thing about SUP’s. I surf in areas where there are juvenile whites around all the time. But you rarely get to see them unless you’re 26 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
Slater T: The best part for me was when we got to McWay falls. It has been a dream of mine my whole life to be on that beach. We were all on such a high that day. Scott M: Camping on the beach with the promise of getting back on the water the next day. Being with friends and making new ones is always more memorable when done around a campfire instead of a club or bar. For me, anyway.
RIS: Did you see anything cool? Ikaika P: I’d say around 90% of what we paddled by you literally can’t see from land, so seeing that much of that rugged coast was awesome. For the short amount of time we’re up there, we explored as much as we could, but I could easily see myself being up there for a month just exploring those caves. We also saw a ton of big wildlife. Whales, dolphins, sharks, seals, otters, sunfish; the coast is so alive up there!
that blew my mind. If you hug the coast there, you can weave in and out of giant Rock formations, caves, and tunnels. And once you get to a giant boulder that looks perfect for diving off of, you’re greeted by this giant hundred foot waterfall breaking right on the beach. I have seen plenty of waterfalls before but there was something different about this one.
bright blue waters of the pacific on a white sand beach with 80 degree weather. Felt like I was in Tahiti and had to pinch myself to realize it was California RIS: What was the best part of the trip? Ikaika P: Hard to decide. It’s a tossup between the night sky and McWay Falls. The night when we pulled in to camp on the beach, I’ve never seen a night sky that clear before. The Milky Way was so unbelievably present to the naked eye that it made all previous camping nights under the stars seem inferior. Pretty crazy stuff. Slater got some unreal photos. Paddling into McWay Falls was another moment
Scott E: Everything. Getting away from all the noise life can bring is much needed. To be in an area where there isn’t service is very refreshing. That waterfall is amazing, always wanted a different perspective of it! Marc M: My favorite part outside a dip under the waterfall was cruising about ¾ mile off shore and seeing these 30 ft. high plumes of mist spraying into the air from whales migrating north. Then suddenly a huge gray while breaches about 100 yards off my paddle board bow and does a big belly flop. Scared me half to death and when it hit was like a bomb went off under the water. RIS: What did you take away from the adventure? Ikaika P: It just made me rethink my
perception of an adventure. A lot of times we think we have to travel to the other side of the world to fulfill our desire for exploration, when most of us don’t even know how good it is in our backyards. All you need is a fun crew and a good idea, and you’re bound to have a great time. Slater T: That good friends, a paddle board and an idea are all you need Scott M: It’s funny. I was thinking as we paddled, that the Chumash Native Americans were living the dream. This was their territory and they had it figured out, man. No pollution. No trash. No traffic. But they did get out on the water. They lived by the hand of the sea. I always feel fortunate when I can reconnect with nature and wash off the concrete. Scott E: Make sure you make time to go do something out of your comfort zone. Go outside and explore, enjoy nature and make memories with your friends. Marc M: Driving the stretch of coast for the first time a few months prior I got a taste of the beaches below from the high cliff lookouts but so see these pristine un touched stretches of California coast up close along the water level was truly breathtaking and made me realize the importance of conservation and how important it is to experience raw nature without human interference RIS: Any other trips planned? Ikaika P: Quick trip back home to Oahu on a few weeks, but outside of that I got nothing really planned. Slater T: Headed to Mexico in mid-October to hold a Stand Up Paddle retreat. Scott M: Yes. But they’re classified. Scott E: Lots! Never stay in the same spot for too long; get busy living! Marc M: Yes, paddle the 4 seas of Israel, Drive the Coast Of Norway from Bergen to the Top, and get over to India! If I can cross one of those off the list this year I will be stoked! Q&A WITH THE CHAMP BY BRIAN TERHORST
CHUCK GLYNN - MEN’S ELITE 8 MILE
Hometown: Carlsbad, California. Sponsors: Laird StandUp, Laird apparel, Cobian USA.
Revolt In Style: Thanks for taking the time to talk. I know this has been a busy year for you. What are your thoughts on the overall season of the Sunday Sunday Sunday Race Series? Chuck Glynn: Racing this year in the SSSR was an amazing experience. it was a fun competitive way to tour Mission bay. There was a good turnout at all the races and it was pretty cool of the organizers to have so many different divisions between both stand up and prone allowing everyone to have a great time. RIS: What was the most challenging aspect of the courses? CG: The most challenging part of the course was reading the course and conditions. On a course where you have tidal movement and wind it’s always in the back of your mind wondering if you made the right call on your decision to either ride the wind up current or ride the current up wind. It made for some fun racing though splitting up the packs and keeping it fresh. RIS: Who/what was your toughest opponent this year? CG: My toughest opponent consistently last year was Scott on his unlimited paddleboard. We have a very friendly competitiveness between us during races. It makes for a good time. RIS: What’s a normal day of training consist of? CG: A normal day of training can consist of a number of different workouts from paddling to cycling to the gym and everywhere in between. Lately I have been having fun with a beach routine workout. It starts out with a ¼ mile run, then a ½ mile paddle, then followed up with 20 pushups and 50 sit ups for 6 cycles on a 10-11 minute total interval.
RIS: What equipment are you using now? CG: My equipment is all Laird StandUp boards. I have been shaping my own race boards this year which has been an amazing learning curve, and I have been surfing on both our new Surrator surf shape, and a surfer longboard shape in the waves. My paddles are also Laird Standup paddles. I use my own shape in a 90 size for racing and I use our teardrop paddle in a 95 size in the surf.
RIS: What’s next for Chuck Glynn? CG: Now that the racing season has come to an end I’m going to refocus on my surfing and chasing down swells.
RIS: I know you were just in Hawaii working on a project w/ Laird - what was that all about & how can we follow it online? CG: Laird is Currently working a new foil surfing project. His Mission is to ride the largest wave and also the longest wave on his foil pushing the limits on what we thought was possible on a wave.
RIS: Any advice for up and coming racers? CG: My advice for upcoming racers is to put the time in on the board and enjoy the experience. It takes a couple years of paddling to develop a solid base so be patient. For tips on training you can also visit the Riding bumps website (ridingbumps.com) or buy the book as it will walk you through training programs and how to train throughout the year.
RIS: You have been traveling a lot this year with team Laird - where have you been, what was the outcome at these events? CG: This year I have traveled quite a bit. The places I have traveled to this year include Cayman islands, North Carolina, Florida, Sayulita, Oahu, Kauai, Idaho, Tahiti, Bora Bora, MoOrea, and Utah. The racing in these events were all special in there own way. I really enjoy traveling and getting to see different cultures and paddling in different bodies of water as they all have a different feel and scenery.
RIS: What are you looking forward to in 2016? CG: With the 2016 season right around the corner I am looking forward to starting up with the training again and see what the new season brings.
RIS: Who would you like to thank? CG: This season has been pretty exciting one of my best years so to date. I owe a lot of that to Roch Frey for helping me build a training schedule so I can be in peak form for the major events. I would also like to thank Laird Stand UP, Laird apparel, and Cobian USA, and friends and family for their support because without them I wouldn’t be where I am today nor would I have access to the best gear on the market allowing me to be as successful as I have been in my paddling career.
RIS: What was the highlight of your racing season so far? CG: This season has been pretty exciting one of my best years so to date. My favorite event this year was the ironmana event in Bora Bora. Not only was it the most beautiful race I have competed in, it was the toughest event I have been in both physically and mentally. It consisted of Stand up racing, prone paddle racing, and swimming over a 4 day period. I was able to come away with a second place ranking.

In the wake of what was arguably the most spectacular video released in 2015, we visited with motorcycle daredevil Robbie Maddison to talk about ‘Pipe Dream’ and his near death experience while riding Tahiti’s colossus waves on his bike.
ROBBIE MADDISON
By Eric Hendrikx “We thought saltwater would be so much better than the lakes we had been training at, since salt water is softer and the high salinity lends itself to floatation—but it didn’t help at all. As soon as we tested the bike in Mission Bay for the first time, I found that the wheels were spinning more, but putting out less momentum,” Maddison recalls. “But I was still able to get the bike to maintain a plane at around 50 miles per hour.” Robbie spoke in a scratchy whisper as described the details of his most recent stunt—riding a thirty-foot Tahiti wave on his motorcycle. We sat at the back patio of his residence in Escondido, California. I had asked him if he wanted to take a break or drink some water before we continued; as I was certain he had been doing interviews all day, placing strain on his vocal chords. What he told me next, was just as incredible as hearing about his adventure on the giant Teahupo’o waves.
“
“I crashed my bike in the yard here the other day. Then I came to the backyard to deal with my wounds. As I was sitting here in a world of pain, I went into a seizure. At first, I turned gray, they told me, then blue. My friend helped get my tongue out of my throat and the ambulance came and took me away. They put me into ICU. I’ve been in an induced coma for the past three days. That’s why I have this cough, because I’ve had all these tubes down my throat.” Maddo had taken a beating while doing a backflip on his BMX bike in the front yard. But it was the hit to the head that sent him into a seizure. He experienced his first attack when he was 16, after contracting meningitis from ingesting dirty lake water. “I was jet skiing with a few of my mates. We were racing around, on a dirty lake, blocked off from the ocean—and we collided. I was thrown into the air and was actually laughing when I came down, taking in a full tube of water straight into my stomach. When we got to the shore, I tried to vomit the water up, but I wasn’t able to get any out.
I BARELY Maddison tested his concept on San Diego’s Mission Bay last fall, when he made three laps for a total of 7 1/2 miles early one morning “before the

birds were up.”
“They said I would potentially be a vegetable for the rest of my life—never walk, talk, or live a normal life again. This all happened before my freestyle motorcycle career had started.” ~Robbie Maddison

ESCAPED DEATH
WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM 33
The next day at work, I was sitting in the lunchroom feeling pins and needles in my stomach. I remember telling my boss something was very wrong. Moments later, I was facedown on the ground in a seizure. We got to the doctor and they thought I was having a brain hemorrhage, so they raced me to the hospital. The driver didn’t know where the hospital was and I had lost the ability to talk. I had to fight to stay awake to show him which way to go. When we arrived at the hospital, I just barely made it through the double doors. Once I made eye contact with the nurse, that’s when I lost all consciousness. I was in a coma for what seemed like months, but it was only a few days. I could tell what was going on, and I tried to respond to people talking to me, but I couldn’t verbalize anything. It was a slow road to recovery, and I had several relapses. My right eye turned in and I became paralyzed, first on the left side of my body, and then the right side. For a period of time, I lost my vision. I spent three months in the hospital before my health started to turn around. After nearly six months of rehabilitation, they said I would potentially be a vegetable for the rest of my life—never walk, talk, or live a normal life again. This all happened before my freestyle motorcycle career had started. By age 22, I had finished my apprenticeship and made a full recovery. I didn’t realize that I had Second Impact Syndrome until I decided I wanted to be a professional motorcycle rider. I took a slam at a local park and hit my head. Afterward, I was sitting in the car and I had a seizure. Then I had another seizure in the Red Bull X Fighters World Championship. The doctor told me every time I have one—I’m dodging a bullet. But I cannot stop my passion. I just invented this new and exciting adventure that I can do, and the ocean is a bit softer, so hopefully I can just crash in the water from now on.” This year, Maddo spent several weeks in Tahiti filming for ‘Pipe Dream’. They had everything in the bag except for riding one of Teahupo’o’s massive waves. And with a skeleton crew, they remained on the island in anticipation of an incoming swell. “We already had an A+ film, without the giant wave. I was praying that the swell wasn’t going to come—I was really scared. Then the phone rang. It was a friend informing me of a huge incoming swell. My throat was jumping. I didn’t want to do go out there. 34 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
“I “I was was getting getting aa bad bad vibe vibe from from the the universe universe about about this this one— one— the the realization realization that that II was was riding riding aa three three hundred hundred pound pound momotorcycle, torcycle, in in full full motocross motocross gear, gear, on on these these gigantic gigantic waves waves in in Tahiti Tahiti reef reef break. break. 36窶ジWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
With the crew waiting on the barge, and Maddo seated on his bike, a massive black hump approached on the horizon. He launched the bike into the ocean and chased after his dream. Once on the wave, all seemed to go as planned until he rounded the shoulder of the Tahitian giant. That’s when he realized this particular wave was a West Bomb—notoriously violent, and possibly a death sentence. “I turned away from the wave and raced toward the shore, but it scooped me and the bike up and pounded us down beneath the surface. The bike hit me in the back, knocking the wind completely out of me, and then we tumbled for the most violent ride of my life. I was in absolute vertigo and my vision was fading out. I was down for a really long time, until I felt like I was going to meet my maker. Just as I was about to take in a full breath of water, my head popped above the surface and I managed to get an arm up to wave for help. I could see the helicopter and boats headed towards me. For four minutes, they had thought I was dead. I was completely exhausted—it was the gnarliest thing that I have ever been through. When I got back to the boat, I saw all the guys I had been filming with, in tears and rattled, with a look of terror in their eyes. I had to hug my friends, but I had no words—I just whimpered like a baby. I had just stared death right in the face.”

TAILS OF
SUMMER
2015 will be remembered as the year Mick Fanning punched a shark - LIVE ON TV. He captured headlines around the world after he was attacked in the final of the J-Bay Open. (possible it was just a curious fellah & not an aggressive man-eater) From Shark attacks to massive wipe-outs and one of the closest battles for a World Title in recent years — the World Surf League has it all. Congratulations, Carissa Moore, you’ve done it again. Moore was the youngest ever women’s world champ in 2011, when she was only 18. She backed it up in 2013 with her second world title trophy, and here we are in 2015, crowning her again, for the third time. Practice, practice, practice... & above all, Moore credits her father, Chris, for that success. photo: Joe Foster WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM 45

This is Parker Cohn. He was born and raised in Newport Beach. He started competing at age 13. His recent success in surfing has provided him a lifestyle that requires a balance between the stress of competition & dreaming about traveling the world. “It gives me much satisfaction knowing that succeeding in contests helps better my future. So, if success is my ultimate goal, then I intend on working harder than ever to get there.” photo: Joe Foster

JOE FOSTER “I have been shooting for over 20 years. I started as a fashion photographer but have always surfed and had a strong connection to the ocean.” Based out of Huntington Beach, CA - Joe is arguably the hardest working cat in the industry. If he’s not shooting with any one of a hundred or so ripping local surfers he’s friends with, he’s knocking out creative for one of the half dozen or so brands he works with. If that’s covered he’s in studio recording with his band. Since the birth of his son, he seems to care less about sleep & more about the work. His passion for the work and his family and his music... not in that order... is readily apparent. We appreciate everything he does. - editor

The Summer of 2015 had it’s fair share of big South swells thanks to a strength˜ When they hit - they hit big. “There’s about eighty guys on the ening El Nino... backside of that wave that you can’t see. I’m still wondering how this one slipped through the cracks“- Robb Wilson

This is my friend Johnny Elles making the most of those long summer days and every last bit of sunlight.” Robb Wilson
ROBB WILSON I was born in the Philippines and moved to Long Beach, CA when I was about four years old. Long Beach is a very diverse city with a lot to offer. I’ve been surfing mywhole life, but I’ve also been plagued with back problems. I’ve had eight back surgeries and three hip surgeries - all surfing and snowboarding related. This ultimately led me to discovering a new passion: Photography. It started off as just a way to stay connected to the ocean as well as my friends & family that surf. In fact I started shooting photos from the water before I ever took photos on land. This might sound cliche´and might also be hard or some people to understand, but photography basically saved my life. - Wilson

SOUND ADVICE
MUSIC
HEAR THIS
By Leslie Terhorst
EDITORS CHOICE - CAGE THE ELEPHANT - TELL ME I’M PRETTY Genre – Alt/Grge/Rock
Fourth studio album. Cage the Elephant have teamed up with producer and fellow musician, The Black Key’s guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach. In a new album trailer for Tell Me I’m Pretty, the clip gives viewers insight on the recording process between Matthew Schultz, Brad Schultz, Jared Champion, Daniel Tichenor and their friend and mentor, Auerbach. The behind-the-scenes clip boasts footage from Nashville’s’ Easy Eye sound studio recording session. Front man Matt Schultz explains, “A lot of the songs on the record were (recorded in) one take.” That was the one of the great things about working Dan, as a producer he’s really good at keeping you from over thinking things,” he added. The singer further credited Auerbach for having “an incredible knowledge of all sorts of obscure music” that the “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” musicians never heard prior. The Arcs and Black Keys member definitely left his mark on Tell Me I’m Pretty, most blatantly on the band’s latest Outkast-leaning single, “Mess Around.” Available 12/18/15
FOOFIGHTERS – SAINT CECILIA Genre: Rock
Saint Cecilia is the result of Grohl & Co.’s latest test: This fall, they decided to see if they could make a recording over the course of 11 days while hold up in an Austin hotel named after the patron saint of musicians. Unsurprisingly, they succeeded, walking away with five tracks that are as strong and focused as any on Sonic Highways. To celebrate, they released the EP for free as a “thank you” to fans and as a way to ask people to donate money to the victims of the recent terrorist attack on an Eagles of Death Metal concert in Paris. The songs sound surprisingly consistent considering the recording session would be a rush job for any other big-time rocker. Out now.
BRIAN FALLON – PAINKILLERS
Genre - Alt/Punk/Rock
PAINKILLERS marks the first solo album from Fallon, known far and wide as singer/ guitarist of The Gaslight Anthem, as well as such acclaimed outfits as The Horrible Crowes and Molly & The Zombies. Produced by studio superstar Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, Frank Turner, Keith Urban), the album was recorded earlier this year at Nashville’s Taxidermy Studios with Fallon fronting a crack band that includes Walker, Molly & The Zombies bassist Catherine Popper (Jack White, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Willie Nelson) and drummer Mark Stepro (Hayes Carll, Ben Kweller, Jackson Browne). PAINKILLERS once again affirms Fallon’s elemental gifts as a songwriter and storyteller, booming with insistent imagery, narrative craft,
