SUMMONING ALL GREENHEARTS :
BUY A SHOE, PLANT A TREE BY ERIC HENDRIKX
L
ook around you this morning, or this afternoon, and think about the things that surround you. Think about the painted walls that surround you made of chalky drywall, screws, and wooden twoby-fours. Think about the concrete skin beneath your feet that now shelters an earth that once breathed trees and foliage and bore home to a plethora of lively critters. Contemplate the chair you’re sitting on, this paper in your hands, or the screen you are staring at, the paper bags you carry, toilet paper, coffee cups, paper towels, notebooks, newspapers, consumption, consumption and more consumption. It all looks so different and unique once we’ve melted it, bent it, baked it and flattened it, but it’s all coming from the same place - Resources. Millions of and billions of tons of resources are being depleted to feed our fattening needy hands with a hunger that exponentially proves its bottomless stomach. And as you think about the black hole of the belly of the beast, you might share my disenchanted feeling that there is no hope, that all is already lost. The apocalypse has already occurred and we are just too stupid to realize it. The harsh truth may be that our society of human locusts has devoured the mother’s hand that gave it birth and fed it. All is not lost. Good efforts are being made by humans with green hearts that are vastly larger than their ever-wanting stomachs. Humans like you and me. Skaters, surfers, bikers, and boarders united by actions and inspired by the landscapes of the earth. Inspirations that drive our spirits to protect that which we love so that our legends carry meaning, so that they might be shared many years from now with those whose birthright should come with the freedom of riding clean waves, breathing fresh air, and shredding the gnarly earthscapes as we know them today. We are warriors when we want to believe in something. When it’s time to stand. When it’s time to fight. Well, it’s time. etnies is fighting. The eco-loving company founded by skater Pierre-André Senizergues, etnies’ CEO and visionary is carving a green path to a healthier planet by creating a brand new forest of more than 35,000 trees through its “Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree” project. It’s simple, for every pair of Jameson 2 Eco shoes sold, etnies will plant one tree in Costa Rica in what will become the etnies Rainforest. This grandiose gesture of green heart will absorb approximately 6,930 tons of CO2 from the Earth’s atmosphere throughout the trees’ lifetime. To put it visually, this represents 465,051,360 shoe boxes worth of CO2, placed end-to-end and wrapped around the earth more than three and a half times. The battle won’t be fought alone. A call to action has been made for all action sports athletes, all fans, all greenhearts, here and inhabitant of Costa Rica. etnies is teaming up with one of the native tribes called the Maleku and a reforestation organization, La Reserva Forest Foundation, to make it happen. After meeting with government leaders in Costa Rica in 2007 and learning about their commitment to making the country carbon neutral by 2021— one of the first developing countries to make this pledge, Pierre had an instant connection. His own company was the first in the action sports industry to make the commitment to be carbon neutral by 2020. The wheels were set in motion and fast-forward to today, etnies, the Maleku and La Reserva are working hand in hand to reach one goal. With La Reserva Forest Foundation in Costa Rica, etnies’ “Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree” project will help the Maleku (known as “guardians of the forest”) reforest their land that was depleted due to cattle farming and a vicious rubber-tree war, while helping Costa Rica reach its carbon neutral goal. In return, etnies is living up to Pierre’s vision. Starting in March 2011, Pierre, along with an etnies team, have begun to travel to Costa Rica to plant the etnies Rainforest hand-in-hand with the Maleku and La Reserva Forest Foundation in Costa Rica. One company, one shoe, one tribe, one foundation, one planet … one step at a time. Together we can take these BIG steps to create a healthy world where we can keep on riding.

One Tribe, One Country, One Company with One Goal - Creating a Rainforest The Maleku are an indigenous tribe with a way of life that revolves around the forest, and they are rightfully known as the guardians of the forest. For more than 150 years, the Maleku have had to fight for their trees that were depleted due to cattle farming and a horrible rubber-tree war, which led to a massacre, and nearly wiped out their tribe. The United Nations has sanctioned their land as a biological corridor to be restored and the international organization has officially marked 2011 as the “Year of the Forest” globally. The Maleku just need help obtaining the trees to reach their goal of reforesting the lands they live off of. As etnies describes it, “One” may seem like a small lonely number, but when one brand (etnies), teams up with one tribe (the Maleku), and one foundation (La Reserva) in Costa Rica, a country committed to sustainability, the results can be staggering. And as we look further at the number “One” we can look past it’s lonely mask and see it’s magnitude as we watch one person, becomes one family, becomes one neighborhood, becomes one town, becomes one city, one state, one nation, one world, united by its core nature to survive. You don’t have to go to Costa Rica to help. You don’t even have to look up from your computer screen. Anyone who buys a pair of etnies Jameson 2 Eco shoes will help reforest Costa Rica one tree at a time. And they aren’t your ordinary consumable shoes. Bike tires and used rubber gloves are recycled to create the shoe’s outsole and plastic bottles are used in the making of their laces. Rainforests help curb global climate change by providing more than a quarter of the oxygen to the world, and are home to thousands of species of animals. Buying a pair of shoes seems so trivial, but when we unite and buy the right shoes we are together planting a Rainforest.
Questions about our earth’s survival can be formed a millions different ways: How long will earth last? How much clean air is left? How can I help? But the most fundamental question at hand right now is: How green is your heart?

ARBOR SNOWBOARDS Coda
Arbor has been building snowboards of green materials like bamboo since the very beginning. But being eco-friendly isn’t the only reason to consider Arbor. The 2011 Arbor Coda is a solid all-mountain deck. It can go fast, rail turns, launch booters, slide the occasional jib, and thanks to its full reverse camber you can even take it into the pipe or powder. MOTHER EARTH NEWS 10 Ocean Saving Tips
IS MISSION BAY GROSS?
San Diego Coastkeeper’s event examines the bay’s ecosystems, water quality WHAT: Signs of the Tide WHEN: May 12 from 6-8 p.m. WHERE: 3127 Jefferson Street. Being a popular getaway in San Diego, Mission Bay is an urban jewel enjoyed both by the tourists and the locals every day. However, development and uses of the bay cause many to wonder about its quality and safety.
2. Make informed seafood choices. Keep a copy of the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s seafood guide in your wallet or text Blue Ocean’s FishPhone to help you choose sustainable seafood at th e grocery store or a restaurant. 3. Dispose of chemicals properly. Never pour chemicals, pharmaceuticals, oil or paint into the drain or toilets. Check with your county’s household hazardous waste program to properly dispose of or recycle chemicals and keep them out of rivers and oceans.
To clear the fog surrounding the issue, San Diego Coastkeeper, the region’s leading environmental nonprofit protecting inland and coastal waters, will educate the public on Mission Bay’s water conditions, uncovering “Is Mission Bay Gross?” On Thursday, May 12 from 6-8 p.m., Coastkeeper will host its quarterly Signs of the Tide at Urban Corps San Diego, located at 3127 Jefferson Street. The event will examine Mission Bay’s ecosystem, land use and development history, infrastructure upgrades to improve urban impacts and water quality data. The presentation will include three expert panelists and a celebrity moderator who will each examine different aspects of the bay.
4. Choose green detergents and household cleaners—or make your own! Besides being better for your own health, these products are safer for the environment since what goes down the drain can end up in our oceans.
At the event, participants with appetite for knowledge will be offered light appetizers and beverages. All of the Signs of the Tide events are free and open to the public.
Coastkeeper’s next Signs of the Tide on Thursday, Aug. 9, will examine “San Diego Bay’s Dirty Little Secret.” For more information about Signs of the Tide, visit Coastkeeper’s website at www.sdcoastkeeper.org.

1. Reduce your plastic consumption. The most frequently collected items during beach cleanups are made of plastic — think reusable shopping bags, water bottles and utensils.
5. Get the dirt on your beachside retreat. Before you stay in a hotel on the coast, ask staff what happens to their sewage and swimming pool water, and if they source their restaurant fish from sustainable sources. 6. Find out the source of your food. Buying local, organic food reduces your carbon footprint, supports the local economy and reduces the amount of pesticides and fertilizers that end up not just in your stomach, but as run-off in rivers and oceans, too. 7. Fill your yard with native species. Reducing the amount of grass in your lawn by planting native shrubs and flower beds will provide a better habitat for birds and other wildlife and require far less water and fertilizer, which can seep into the oceans. 8. Keep your beach visit clean. When visiting the beach, stay off fragile sand dunes, take your trash with you and leave plants, birds and wildlife for everyone to enjoy. Find a Conservancy coastal preserve near you. 9. Choose alternatives to coral. Whether shoppi ng for jewelry, household décor or accessories for your fish tank, do your part to leave fragile coral reef habitats untouched by buying products that aren’t made of real coral. 10. Celebrate our oceans. Whether you live inland or on the coast, we are all connected to the ocean; take the time to organize or participate in activities that restore and celebrate the ocean, and help support The Nature Conservancy’s ocean conservation work by visiting http://www. nature.org/initiatives/marine/

ven though Winter is officially over and Spring is in the air,our entire west coast is still getting drenched and the Sierra snowpack is reaching numbers not seen since the historic Winter 82-83. These numbers are adding up to perhaps putting a temporary halt to the drought we’ve been enduring for the past few years as well. The snowpack will ensure enough water to provide reservoirs statewide to reach near capacities which means healthy quantities of fruits, nuts, grains and vegetables will be available for us all; hopefully at even lower prices at the market. That’s the good news!

KINI BEACH
Kini Beach is an environmentally friendly business that manufactures by hand, products are made from 99% recycled materials, all of which are one of a kind and unique. Their current product line is made up of stylish beach totes and SUP (stand up paddle) covers. In addition to making some cool stuff, they have managed to rescue in excess of 6000 cubic yards of PVC, Styrofoam and other plastics. www.kinibeach.com
The downside to these unexpected downpours is the proof that our cities statewide are woefully Ill equipped to handle the effects of urban runoff pollution when rainfall totals reach what our elected officials refer to as “ Above Average”. When you combine a crumbling, outdated, poorly engineered city infrastructure in the country’s sixth largest city with no financial means to even repair potholes in the streets, you have a recipe for catastrophic disaster when it pertains to coastal water quality issues. That’s what has happened to The Golden State of California because when we overbuild And build some more with little or no thought to environmental concerns or even to thought about the future, especially when it comes to runoff pollution. San Diego has the oldest sewer system in California. The number of people using the system has also tripled in the past 45 years. When we experience a sewer breakdown 85 percent of the effluent involved go directly and unabated to the beaches and into the ocean. We have in just the city (not the county) 3,000 miles of sewer pipes in our system and more than 45,000 drains and 700 miles of drainage points. You know, the places where all the stuff we don’t want washes to the sea everyday it rains Most of the pipes in our system are over 100 years old and they are literally coming apart at the seams and are they all have significant cracks in them and are in urgent need of repair but it just is not going to happen. Why you may ask? Because the Honorable Mayor Sanders diverted over 100 million dollars that was to be spent on runoff infrastructure and it went for “other projects”. Please call the mayors office and councilman Kevin Faulconer and tell them to our tax dollars back into fixing our antiquated sewer system, please. More disturbing facts.. 75 percent of the toxic chemicals that are dumped onto our beaches and into the ocean is carried there by storm water. Lead, zinc, chromium, manganese, nickel and cadmium are the most common metals found in storm water runoff, MMM’ Yummy in the tummy! Brake linings, tires and engines, pesticides, herbicides, PCB’s, etc. petroleum hydrocarbons that drop off our cars, oil stain by oil stain, drop by drop it all adds up. The Los Angeles River alone contributes 1 percent of all the annual WORLD petroleum hydrocarbon input and it all goes directly into the ocean. During our Winter North and West swells that flows from Los Angeles and is pushed with the swells right down the coast and ends up right here in our coastal waters and beyond. I wish I had a happy ending for you all but it’s not happy. it’s time to put the pressure on and make our Elected Officials do their jobs. We have to stop dumping our effluent off the streets and onto the beaches and divert storm water to the sewer and secondary treatment at Point Loma. There is no other solution. it’s not cigaret butts that are harming the oceans and choking the life out of it, it’s storm water pollution. Don’t take my word for it, see for yourself. It’s no secret. -TK

WHAT IS BIODIESEL & WHY DO I CARE? By Brian Terhorst Photos by Rich Van Every
Biodiesel is a clean burning fuel for diesel engines made from animal and vegetable fats and oils. Unlike petroleum-based diesel, biodiesel is a renewable source of fuel that can be naturally replenished using local resources. Biodiesel is not made from fossil fuels! It is be made from renewable resources such as used cooking oil from restaurants which decreases our dependence on foreign oil and contributes to our own economy. Diesel engines can run on this stuff with little or no alterations. SO, WHY USE IT? Biodiesel is better for the environment because it is made from renewable resources and has lower emissions compared to petroleum diesel. It is less toxic than table salt and biodegrades as fast as sugar. Not to mention the fact that that regular diesel is currently over $4.50 a gallon! So, screw the big oil companies. I’m not happy financing gold plated toilets for those Saudi dawgs. You may have noticed our company truck ‘Big Blu’ tearing around town. The big Ford F-250 has a 7.4 litre turbocharged V-8 that previously got about 12-15 miles to the gallon and belched black smoke at every stop sign & traffic light. What a pig! There was no way we could keep a vehicle like that, and have a clear conscience in this world. We wanted other options! Our choices were, drive the big blue beast off Sunset Cliffs or find an alternative fuel! We chose the later & switched over to BioDiesel in 2008...we never looked back. subsequently we noticed the difference and benefits almost immediately. First off... the smell. We lost the sickening stench of diesel that gave way to a kinder aroma of...french fries??? Sort of. Second we gained about 4-5 miles to the gallon. The big Revolt truck gets about 20 miles to the gallon now. That’s nice...hmmm? Another benefit, a smoother running, quieter engine. We received more horsepower without the signature thick black smoke billowing out of the tail pipe like regular diesel vehicles. (A certified mechanic shared with us the fact that the natural lubrication of the product will actually extend the life of the engine. He said we could expect a 500K engine life-span) Remember we have made no modifications, just regular maintenance on the filters. We often wondered why every diesel engine isn’t running on Biofuel? Because Big Brother doesn’t want you to know...well, that, and it’s not readily available.
18 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
Unless you make the Biodiesel yourself, it can be difficult to find unless you know where to look. Yes, I said make it yourself. If you have the time and the space you can actually build a small refinery to process recycled oil yourself. Personally I have neither the time or the space to do so. (or the desire to get down and dirty with grease collection) So, that left me with the other option: go find someone that distributes it from the pump. There were two such providers in San Diego County that I use on a regular basis, one being Person Fuels on El Cajon Blvd. at the 15. The other is Buster Biofuels in Escondido. For slightly less than regular diesel, at today’s prices, I can pour it in to my own tank just like any other fuel. Most diesel engines can run on B100 (where, 100 represents the percentage of biodiesel mixed with the remaining percentage of petroleum diesel) or any blend of biodiesel without any modifications at all. We use a B20 blend (20% biodiesel/80% diesel) product during the winter when we might find ourselves driving thru higher elevations. Pure biodiesel, or ‘B100’, can actually gel and clog fuel lines at near freezing temps.. So to be safe we stick with the B20 blend in winter months and have been purchasing it from Pearson’s Fuel located at 4067 El Cajon Blvd. San Diego, CA 92105. And, now there’s a new fuel alternative in town by the name of Buster Biofuels. But only for commercial vehicles & fleets. Buster Halterman takes aim at the competitive business of Alternative Fuels.
Biodiesel Benefits Maintenance Savings
• Cleaner engine burn due to solvency attribute biodiesel • Lubricity properties extend engine life
Seamless Integration
• Similar fuel consumption, horsepower, and torque as diesel fuel • Little or no modification necessary
Safer Handling
• Higher flash point (the point at which fuel ignites) • Non-toxic • Biodegradeable
It’s Beach food
Emissions Reduction
• Reduces greenhouse gases (CO2) • Meets EPAct credits • No sulfur (causes acid rain) • No aromatics (suspected cancer causing) • Reduces smog and ozone (Hydrocarbons) • Reduces health risks (Particulates)
Energy Security
• Renewable resource • Reduces reliance on foreign oils • Fuel cost stability • Improves local economy Buster Biofuels initiates, establishes and services “green initiatives” for restaurants and companies in San Diego County. They reclaim used cooking oil, then convert it to biodiesel that refuels diesel engines. Restaurants should utilize Buster’s free oil collection service which strives to reduce petroleum dependency and carbon emissions. They have the oil recycled into biodiesel fuel which will soon be available for bulk sale in various blends such as B20, B50 and B99. The higher the “B” number, the more biodiesel in the blend … which translates in to a friendlier fuel.” ‘Buster’ is the nickname of the founder of Buster Biofuels. Buster Halterman was a top professional skateboarder for over 20 years . He is originally from an 18 acre farm in Wellsville (Wherethehellsville?), PA and ironically had a childhood dream of becoming a “gas station man”.. His wife was the first one to say “… GO FUEL YOURSELF!” After being a home-biodiesel enthusiast for a couple years, he founded the company in 2009 then recruited his cousin Jason Biddle as a key partner. Their passion for environmental conservation and vision to create a meaningful company naturally led to the core philosophy and business model that enabled support for the company’s mission.

As soon as April of this year, the company will begin delivery of biofuel to larger fleets and conscientious companies. Once the plant is operational, it will produce 2 million gallons of biodiesel a year. In the end, Buster Biofuels sends a message to the petroleum industry and the world through their slogan, “GO FUEL YOURSELF!”. MANUFACTURING STOKE Words of wisdom from documentary filmaker and eco warrior Pierce Kavanagh Interview By Eric Ramirez Photo by Aaron Goulding
MANUFACTURING STOKE is a documentary film about sustainability in the surf industry. We are all being bombarded with buzz words like “going green, carbon footprint and eco-friendly”...but what does that really mean to us as surfers? RIS: Tell us about your project? PMK: We set out to examine the industry and highlight individuals striving for a positive change during a shift from petroleum products to more sustainable and responsible components. When we got back, we documented over 30 candid and personal interviews from legends to unknowns alike. We visited surf spots, shaping rooms, corporate offices, backyards, garages and factories and returned with an amazing and truthful look into surfer’s lives. MANUFACTURING STOKE is a film that is long overdue. RIS: What was the turning point in your life that made you decide to take a stand? PMK: Interesting question...as far as making a stand, I don’t know...this film definitely isn’t about me. I have my own views on both sustainability and the surf industry but I am merely providing a platform for others to give their views. And with that, you are going to get the good, the bad and the ugly. For me personally, travel gets me out of my comfort zones and experiencing the other side of the tracks is a powerful eye opener. For example, my wife Petra and I were traveling around the Gulf area during last spring/summer’s BP oil spill and saw the contamination first hand and the lives it affected. Soon after returning home we went to a local “green” surf expo and met some people who were using organic materials for surf wax, recycling wetsuits, making handplanes out of old surfboards and that’s all it took. The very next day I was working on a film. RIS: What do you hope people will walk away with after seeing this film? PMK: I just want people to make educated choices in their everyday lives. The surf industry is a $7.2 BILLION dollar a year industry and it is your money and my money that supports it. There are substantial changes taking place and if you are going to shell out a bunch of cash, find out about the company you are buying products from. Are these companies doing the right thing? If you are going to recycle and try to cut down on waste, don’t you think they should too? Educate yourself. RIS: How has this film changed you, your friends, and your family? PMK: I think it may be a little too early to see, but who knows? The coolest thing about this film for me is having the support from everyone I know. It wouldn’t have been possible without my friends who film, surf, play music, and create art. And a added bonus is that I met a lot of new friends in the process. Stoked. RIS: What can surfers do to make a difference? PMK: Surfers can make a huge difference. As I mentioned before, our money supports the industry so in a sense it is our surf industry. A paradigm shift in conjunction with a savvy consumer is a mighty powerful thing. Surfers should support their neighborhood first and if they are going to consume outside of that, do it wisely. Ask any surfer to describe his last really good wave and watch what happens...the gleam in the eye, incessant babbling as one hand turns into a peeling wave while the other hand i their board ripping that wave... you know what I am talking about. Focus that energy towards cleaning up the mess and we will all get it done. RIS: In one sentence, what message would you want the world to hear? REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE...far out man.

This Year He Has His Sights Set On The Podium Interview by Brian Terhorst Photo By Leslie Krouse
INTERVIEW
AARON ASTORGA
The inaugural 2008 Ultimate Boarder champion and winner of the $50,000 prize purse, is looking for redemption in 2011. Last year he came just one point away from taking it, but a four way tie bumped him out of contention...and a big fat paycheck. No hard feelings, just a crapload more training, year round from his base in O’Side. This year he plans on standing front and center on the Ultimate Boarder podium. Aaron started skating in, well let’s just say over 25 years ago. His Skateboard stance is regular and he also goes by the nickname Double A. He has a smooth surf style in the bowls and in the surf that make his skills look effortless. When he’s not running the shop at Quiver, he’s in the water, on a ramp or gearing up for a mountain session. We recently had the opportunity to meet up with the multitalented athlete just before he headed for Big Bear to train for UB. Here’s what was discussed: RIS: What does it mean for you to compete in the Ultimate Boarder? AA: It’s a lot of fun. Definitely one of the best contests this season I look forward to competing in. I’m lucky enough to have it right here in my back yard at Seaside Reef. It’s going to be awesome this year, to be able to sleep in my own bed, and have the home court advantage; it should be a great time. RIS: You came pretty close to winning last year. AA: Yeah, last year was crazy. It was a super tight race for the top spot. It was a 4 way tie, so they ended up going to your top ranking to break the tie, and since I came in 4th in the skate portion, I ended up in 4th over all. It was a tough contest last year... a lot of good riders came out. RIS: Who do you think is going to be your toughest competition this year? AA: There are some heavyweight Snowboarders coming in this year that are first time competitors in the event. Chas Guildermond, Shayne Pospisil, and of coarse Todd Richards is back in the mix, He’s always a good contender for the top three spots. There are some new young guns coming in like Kalani David. He’s a really good surfer and rips in skateboarding. It’ll be interesting to see what Kalani brings. RIS: Of the three, which sport do you feel you need to work on the most? AA: Right now, unfortunately snowboarding is kind of my weakness. I haven’t lived in the mountains for quite awhile. I’m trying to get up to the local mountains as much as possible to ride. RIS: What are your thoughts on the Ultimate Boarder coming to San Diego, and the organization as a whole? AA: I’m really stoked to see the comp here in San Diego. I’m really lucky to have the event in my own backyard at Seaside Reef. What’s cool, we’re going to build the ramp in the parking lot at Seaside. It’s the first time in history that a skate ramp has been allowed to be built at a California State Park, right next to the beach. I’m just glad to see that this event is continuing. It’s been tough with the economy over the last few years. I know Tim Hoover, the founder, has put his ass on the line to make this happen. So, hats off to Tim for pulling it off again. RIS: Any shouts to friends, family, or sponsors? AA: Yeah, I definitely want to thank my sponsors for all their support. O’quinn Clothing. Also all the guys at Quiver Surfboard and Bull Taco, who are going to be at the event supporting and feeding all the contestants. Rome Snowboards for keeping me hooked up with gear. Hosoi Skate, Independent Trucks, and Bones Wheels. Of course, everyone else who has supported me through the years.

TEAM REVOLT IS SET
THREE ULTIMATE BOARDER ATHLETES PREPARE FOR BATTLE Interviews by Brian Terhorst and Patrick Bernard
W
e had been working on putting together a team of riders for the Ultimate Boarder for months with no real progress. Plenty of offers from good surfers, average skaters, unknown snowboarders...not really feeling it...we waited. We knew it would come together, eventually. When it finally did, It was more than we could have expected. One great athlete after another until a stellar team was formed. Better than I could have planned on my own for sure. It was not without help from friends and good luck all around. Our snow editor Patrick had been watching an up and coming young pro from Mammoth Mt. by the name of Mark Reininga for a few months & was very impressed. He gave us his name & number. We Googled him... the first thing we saw was his Youtube video. You have to see this! Mark is holding a GoPro camera in his hand filming himself board ...and is DESTROYING IT (the slopes, not the camera). Blew my mind. Yeah, you’re in. Next our friend Kai at Powerbalance suggested we speak w/ pro surfer Dean Randazzo. Hah! We’ve been trying to get together with him for a year or so to do a feature. After his issue of SURFER Mag came out last year & made him a superstar we thought he was out of reach for awhile. One call..yep. He’s cool as ever...wants to be on the team. Sweet! Two down, one to go. A few nights ago we got a late phone call from a certain legend of skateboarding that was having some issues with sponsors and just wanted to skate the event That’s how we met Steve Caballero. Similar phone call. Two minutes later, the coolest guy ever...is on our team. No way! And there you have it, TEAM REVOLT. On their way to the 2011 Ultimate Boarder Championship. Thanks to everyone that helped get us this far. Stoked! We caught up with each of them for a quick chat, here’s what they had to say:

RIS: Unreal! I can’t believe we have a bonafide legend on Team Revolt. Your successful career has spanned 3 decades and your style and tricks are emulated by virtually everyone in the sport at some level, to say the least. There are few people in this world that can say, “That trick was named after me.” Besides being one of the best skateboarders on the planet you have also become an amazing artist. Let’s start there. What kind of art medium are you working in at the moment? SC: I mostly work on canvas with acrylics, but lately I have also been messing with Ink and brush work on thick card stock for illustrations that may be used for t-shirt or deck graphics in the skate industry. I’m also into Hotrods and kustom cars, so I dabble with 1-shot enamel paint in my art work sometimes, but the stuff is very toxic and smelly too.
RIS: Mark, first off were stoked you’re snowboarding for team REVOLT at Ultimate Boarder. We’re also lucky enough to have Dean Randazzo surfing with us, as well as skateboard legend Steve Caballero. Any thoughts on being the young gun snowboarder teamed up with the skating and surfing legends? MR: Couldn’t be more stoked! Growing up I would always watch Steve skate and he definitely had a big influence on me and my snowboarding!
RIS: What inspires your work? SC: Lots of things in my life inspire my work including childhood memories of superheroes and monster movies, my japanese heritage, skateboarding, the hot rodding kustom kulture, motocross. Other artists I admire inspire me as well like Dirty Donnie, Dave Burke, Damian Fulton, Johnny “KMNDZ” Rodrigues and David Lozeau. - Continued on pg. 33
Reininga - Mammoth Mt. self portrait
RIS: You ride Mammoth often, the site for Ultimate Boarder snow event; do you see any advantages or disadvantages to to this in the competition? MR: Probably an advantage, I’d say ‘cause I get to ride the park a bunch. But to be honest? I have no idea! I’m just planning on having fun with the crew! It’s going to be epic! RIS: If you were to have your pick, would you take a sweet powder day or a bluebird day in the park? MR: Powder day for sure! There’s nothing better than dropping a cliff or getting a face shot in the POW with your friends. RIS: Can you tell us a little about your Snowboarding history? When did it start and where did it go down? MR: Yeah! I started snowboarding when I was 8 at a resort called Cocaine in New York. It only had 4 chair lifts and an elevation of 700 feet. It was a pretty funny resort; everyone had a nickname for it, that I’m sure you can figure out. When I turned 16 I was so over it, (plus I got kicked out for doing a back flip, apparently you’re not allowed to go upside down on your snowboard on the East Coast) So being that I could drive now, I decided to go to a bigger resort called Holiday Valley. That’s where I discovered park riding, I fell in love! When I turned 18, with some help from my family and friends, I moved to mammoth. Now it’s two years later & my dreams are becoming a reality! RIS: You’re competing with us in Ultimate Boarder very soon, what’s going down next for Mark Reininga? MR: After Ultimate Boarder I have a couple more contests then I’m planning on taking a break from the contest scene for a month or so. I just want to work on some tricks for next year! RIS: Any last words, thoughts or shout outs to the world? MR: GKC4LIFE.COM check it out and like us on facebook! Got to thank the man upstairs for letting us shred everyday! Dean, so glad to have you on the Team. Seriously stoked that you’re back again, healthy and surfing as well as you are. We just had a great photoshoot with you the other day. Aaron Goulding got some great shots including our cover this month. I guess a lot of people know your story now after the feature in Surfer Magazine. Your story as an accomplished surfer and most recently a Cancer survivor is an inspirational one to say the least. Since your diagnosis with Hodgkin’s disease in 2001, you’ve been there and back, battled the odds and won! We think you definitely have the ‘warrior spirit’ and we’re proud to have you on our team. Besides that...you’re a ripping surfer too. So, Can we talk a bit about your foundation? What is the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation? Tell us where people can check it out & how they can get involved. DR: The foundation was founded in 2001 shortly after my diagnosis. I wanted to take a bad thing and make it positive. So, the foundation was formed to to help others dealing with cancer. I had health insurance at the time, luckily, so I was thinking what if I had not had it? So, at the beginning it was to raise awareness to the importance of health insurance and to assist those dealing with cancer who did not have insurance to cover some of the bills. Today, we help people dealing with the disease who have no where else to turn for assistance, we help with mortgage, food, medical bills etc.. the last thing you want to worry about when you are fighting cancer are your financial obligations. - Continued on pg.33

RODGER
TWENTY QUESTIONS WITH MAMMOTH WAVE & MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN RIDER
Words by Aaron Goulding Photos by Aaron Schall
At 28 years old, Rodger Eales is a San Diego native who pushes the limits of surfing by charging large waves in Mexico and hurling himself into the air on his surfboard only to land some amazing moves. Rodger grew up in Ocean Beach and can be found surfing any spot firing in San Diego. When Rodger’s not chasing mammoth waves, he’s most likely At Mammoth Mountain snowboarding or in the water spearfishing. We were able to catch up with Rodger recently for twenty questions: 1. RIS: So Rodger, where did you grow up? RE: I was raised in the greater San Diego area, mainly Ocean Beach and Point Loma. 2. RIS: When did you get your first surfboard? RE: Ten Years old. Dad made me boogie until I proved myself in the ocean. 3. RIS: Describe how you felt when you first stood up on a surfboard. RE: I was baffled by how hard it was. 4. RIS: Who did you look up to and admire when you were a young man? RE: Dad, older brother, Slater, J. Virgilio, Rocky Balboa, Shrek, Rese Witherspoon, 5. RIS: Of all the places you have traveled to, what place in particular stands out and why? RE: Mexico. I grew up so close and I’ve always loved it. 6. RIS: Who or what inspires you? RE: People and what they do. Family, Friends…Pros and x-cons. 7. RIS: Is there any particular session that stands out over the years?
26 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
RE: During the Fire Storm few years back, went to Mexico with Charlie Stevens, Chad Richmond, and Corey Garcia. It was a juxtapose surf session, cause the Santa Ana winds were strong making the solid swell really good, but the same wind made the fire rage and people where losing their homes. Felt weird. 8. RIS: Do you have any regrets or wish you had done something differently? RE: Whoa, that is always a stumper question. May have been a couple of descions that could have been better played, but ya’ never know, they may benefit me down the road some other way. 9. RIS: I know you like to ride big waves. Where do you go for that? RE: I’m just a beginner in big waves, however, I got Todos and surfed Mavericks for the first time this year. I have not figured out how to best travel with a 9’2” and 9’8”. I’m open to suggestion if anyone has tips. 10. RIS: How has surfing changed your life? RE: umm. My life is based around the weather more. When certain conditions arise, everything else becomes more difficult, cause nothing is as fun as a good surf. 11. RIS: If you weren’t surfing, what would you be doing? RE: When I’m not surfing I’m in class at USF, working on a Teaching Credintial. If I never surfed I’d probly be barrel racing horses. 12. RIS: Who are some of the people you feel are shaping the path for surfing today? RE: Slater, VQS surf series, the list is long so many people male and female continue to push the limits in their surfing. 13. RIS: What is your favorite board? Your favorite surf spot? RE: PlusOne 5’10” squash. Never been a big equipment geek, wax and ride. Favorite spot is R&R bowl.
14. RIS: Where do you go to eat after a long sesh.? RE: Hector’s 15. RIS: What music amps you up for a good surf? RE: Decendents, Ramones, Tribe Called Quest 16. RIS: What causes or organizations do you support? RE: Huh, well I volunteer for Peer Health Exchange teaching Bay area high schools about different health related issues. 17. RIS: What are you most grateful for? RE: Health 18. RIS: What are your long term goals for surfing. RE: Longevity, surf it’s enjoyable. 19. RIS: What’s it like to live in San Diego? RE: San Diego is a beautiful place. My family spent a lot of our free time on the water, in the water, and around the water. It is a great environment for that. 20. RIS: Do you have anything you’d like to add? RE: Thanks to all of my family, friends, and those who have supported me throughout the years. I’d also like to thank my sponsors: Volcom, Plus One, Dakine, Arbor, FCS, Julie Designs, SDA security

“I like to be radically different. Diversity inspires me. I like to push the limits of my equipment” Interview and photos by Aaron Goulding Mike Meyers is a very soulful surfer. He loves surfing La Jolla reefs and he kills it on a longboard. You will usually find Mike doing a massive floater or going huge off the lip. And when the waves are just right he’s hanging five of the nose with grace and style. RIS: So Mike, how many years have you been surfing? MM: 27 years RIS: You have a unique Longboarding style. Where does the inspiration to surf like you do come from? MM: I like to be radically different. Diversity inspires me. I like to push the limits of my equipment. RIS: I recently met one of you sponsors, Dennis Murphy at Murphy Surfboards. He is a great guy. Tell me how you met and what makes you an asset to his team. MM: Last ten years or so Gary Seagraves of La Jolla has been my main shaper. Joe Roper takes care of my glasswork. All my other gear I find along the way. RIS: Does you long hair cause any drag? MM: Mozies weren’t too bad during the day, but at dusk you want your chemicals. RIS: So what keeps you going Mike? What makes you wake up and want to surf everyday? MM: My friends in and around La Jolla, Windansea Surf Club. RIS: When you are not surfing, what do you do? MM: Golf, Dirt bike, Snowboard, drums RIS: Growing up, who did you idolize? CARISSA MOORE 2011 Roxy Pro Gold Coast Champion Photos by Brian Nevins & Simon Williams
Red Bull Surf Athlete Carissa Moore has staked an early claim to the 2011 ASP Women’s World Tour title, grabbing the win at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast in Australia to kick off the season. The competition venue of Snapper Rocks on Australia’s Gold Coast produced the goods for the final day of women’s competition, as the world’s best female surfers collectively announced a new standard of high-performance wave-riding. “It’s been an amazing finish to the event and the waves were so good for us today,” Moore said after an electric final with 16-yearold Tyler Wright. “If I didn’t have priority and hadn’t dropped in on Tyler on that wave, then she probably would have gotten the score and won the heat. It’s been an incredible event for me and I’m excited for the year ahead.” The young Hawaiian’s victory, the fourth elite win of her career, can be taken as a fierce declaration of her plans for the year, as she clearly eyes up her maiden ASP World Title. “It’s still early in the season but the ASP Women’s World Title is definitely a goal,” Moore said. “I’m just happy to be surfing the way I am and getting results. I’m riding a Mayhem Matt Biolis shape. It’s a 5’ 9” and I love it; it’s kind of a magic board, so I’m stoked. Luckily I have a couple just like it so I’m trying to take care of them.” Now sitting in the driver’s seat in the hunt for the 2011 ASP Women’s World Title, Moore’s looking forward to the next event. “All the girls are surfing amazingly and we really saw it at this event,” Moore said. “It’s going to be an exciting year on tour. I just can’t wait to see what happens.”
Fellow Red Bull surfer and 2010 ASP Women’s World RunnerUp Sally Fitzgibbons was part of the select few to consistently break the boundaries of women’s surfing at the event, but the young natural-footer couldn’t stop a rampaging Moore in their semi-final clash. “It’s always disappointing coming up short in a contest,” Fitzgibbons said. “I’m happy with the way I’m surfing, but it just didn’t go my way in the semi-finals. It’s been a great off-season though. I had a month at home and you can’t complain about that. Just have to buckle down and focus on the next one.” Drawing her own lines between becoming one of surfing’s elite and just being a good kid, Carissa Moore’s incredible talent and vibrant personality have industry insiders looking to her as the “next big thing.” Surfer magazine named Carissa, just 16 years old, one of the most influential surfers of the year; less than a month later, Carissa upset seven-time world champion Layne Beachley to take the Reef Hawaiian Pro title and become the youngest-ever Vans Triple Crown of Surfing event champion. Although a fixture in the surfing world since she was eight, Carissa has postponed turning pro to focus on being a junior at the Punahou School, an elite private school in Honolulu. Though she may have two worlds, Carissa has just one goal: to be the best. While the Triple Crown may someday weigh heavily on her head, Carissa is looking forward to practicing more difficult maneuvers and trying to improve her surfing every time she goes in the water. Qualifying for the WCT is on her wish list, but more than anything else, Carissa relishes the opportunity to just travel and surf. With her full attention on her surfing, there is no telling what Carissa can achieve or how many times she will achieve it. But in a style that may become her trademark, Carissa is focusing on the more immediate reality: “I am definitely a lucky girl to be living that life that I live.”

1958 My First Surfboard Complete with more than a fair amount of hyperbole and B.S. Like all the other gremmies at The Shores, it was finally time for me to get my own surfboard – I was getting way too cool to continue to borrow boards from anyone who had one to loan. In general, our Shores crew was relatively accomplished as mat riders, body surfers, skimboarders, and stingray stabbers, but the next level up was to become a real surfer, and to be so, one had to own his own board. My parents agreed that they would invest a maximum of $50.00 into my latest passion. I think they were happy that I was no longer shooting my Red Ryder BB Gun at anything [except for humans and our dog] that moved around our house

My friend Richard Gooch had a balsa board, about 10 feet long, of unknown origin for sale, and it fit into the budget– however – I wanted a “Brand Name” board, preferably a Nelson, Burland, or even better, a Pat Curren. Steve “Maw” Haney was one of the alpha male surfers at The Shores, a few years older than we were, and Steve spent most of his time at WindanSea. Maw was also a customer of the San Diego Union newspaper, which I delivered every morning to 213 recipients at The Shores. I got the nerve to ask Maw if he knew of any surfboards for sale in the fifty dollar range. Maw just happened to have a board for sale, $50 shaped by, praise the lord, Alan Nelson. This board included a list, penciled into the wood, of all those who participated in the production, everyone from the gluer of the balsa planks, to the tool who had to fetch the beer – way cool – BUT – the bottom of the board had a unique look - laminated under the glass – photos of topless pinup girls.
I was stoked, but even I had enough common sense to know that my mom would NEVER agree to the purchase – DENIED. A couple of days later, Maw surprised me as I was delivering papers; he had another board– a Pat Curren. This board too fit into the budget, and he would even let me try it for a couple of days, no charge – STOKED! Naturally, all was not as it appeared to be. In huge letters, across the entire 10 foot length of the board, were these 4 words: STOLEN FROM PAT CURREN! I was a bit nervous about this purchase, but Maw assured me that everyone in La Jolla knew that Curren was selling the board, no possible retribution. I came back to Maw’s house after school, and Steve handed me the board – STOKED! Steve didn’t ask for any $$, nor any other sort of collateral. I started the 3 block trek, lugging the 50 + pound surfboard to my house – STOKED – NO PAIN! Halfway home – still stoked – until a car, which looked uncannily like one owned by a WindanSea guy – name unknown, stopped next to me. WindanSea guys I had seen in school jumped out, grabbed the board, and laughed as they drove away – “You’re a Shores Guy, you are not worthy of a Pat Curren.” As they left, Haney drove up and said that this “sale” was just a giant RF to a gremmie. This was a board that was NEVER gonna leave WindanSea, but he and Curren thought it would be a great way to initiate a Shores Gremmie into La Jolla’s surf culture – Not Stoked! Anyway, by default, I purchased The Gooch Board, and from that point I began my decades long, ongoing, surf adventure – STOKED!

We are very proud to have raised over $250.000.00 and have helped many dealing with this terrible disease. The foundation started with a big amateur surf event in Margate NJ, today we are on our 11th annual “Surf for a Cause” and we also have a “Freeze for a Cause” “Golf for a Cause” and 22 mile “Paddle for a Cause”. We make our events fun and bring the community together all for a great cause. For more info please check out the foundation at www.Deanrandazzocancerfoundation.org RIS:What is this we hear about your new surf company? Tell us what that’s all about. DR: Well, its more of a brand and not just a surf company. I launched Randazzo industries last fall. It encompasses Randazzo surfboards, camp ZZO (surf camp and advanced surf training/coaching) public speaking, apparel and accessories. I started the boards with a guy named “Ninja” using my design concepts and knowledge of boards and combined with his shaping skills forming a great synergy for our board shapes. I’m really stoked the boards are working really well and we’re getting great feed back on the different models we offer. Part of starting this brand was that I wanted to give back so, a percentage of sales will be donated back to non profit cancer foundations to aid in the fight against cancer. More info at Randazzoindustries.com RIS: This is your first year competing in the Ultimate Boarder Championship. What are your thoughts on the competition? Who are you looking out for? What about those youngsters? DR: I really like the concept. Skating and snowboarding evolved from surfing, so...only natural to have an event like this to bring all three together. I’ll be look’n out for Steve Caballero take’n it to the youngsters in the skate park after I took it to ‘em in the surf! Ha ha! RIS: Now that you are back in top shape and surfing well, what’s next? Competitions? Travel? Mt Everest? DR: Well, its tough without any major backing or sponsorship but I’m trying to do the cancer advocacy thing, sort of a mini Lance Armstrong type thing. I feel like I have a responsibility to sort of carry the flag for people dealing with cancer after all that I’ve been through fighting this and now back to feeling good again. I want to inspire, give hope and show those people that they can get through it to, never give up and get back to life and doing what they love after the illness. Now that I am feeling good I want to keep training hard and get back out there and do some photo/video trips and compete in some select events. No Mt Everest I would like to go to Mammoth for some boarding though. RIS:Where is your favorite break in the US - East or West coast? Favorite break on the planet? DR:Probably Margate pier NJ thats where it all started. On the planet cant decide between G-land or J-bay so sick! RIS: What are you surfing on now? DR: My board of choice right now is my CT model 6’0 18.32 x 2.32 very high performance board. RIS: Are we gonna see you this summer in the Revolt Summer Surf Series? DR: Yes! I was out of the water last summer so I missed the contest but am ready for this years. RIS; Any last words? Shout out to anyone in particular? DR; I want to thank everyone for there support and prayers during my cancer bouts. I want to thank everyone at the the DRCF for all of there hard work and efforts running the foundation and the events making it possible to help others. And, of course my friends and family; Mom, Joe, Denise, Barbara and Dean Jr. Thanks for taking the time to talk to us. You are truly an inspiration. I look forward to seeing you destroy the competition at Seaside Reef! Team Revolt!

RIS: Tell us about where your artwork is showing. SC: At the current moment, i have a solo show going on at a gallery named Cukui in Japantown in San Jose, Ca. It’s partly a t-shirt boutique as well, but they have monthly art shows there as well. The opening night was a huge success and i sold alot of work and it was packed all night long. I don’t get to do too many solo art shows as i’m super busy with family and my skateboarding career as well, so when i do get them, they are far and few between. I’m able to squeeze in some group shows throughout the year that only need 1-2 pieces of work and that works for me most of the time. RIS: What are your thoughts on Ultimate Boarder? SC:I think it’s a great event put on by Tim Hoover and his crew. I’ve been in two events so far in the new Team challenge he has included and it’s been an awesome time. I just wish i had more time to make it to the other events besides just the skateboarding part of the 3-day challenge. It’s also cool to see the other pros and ams who ride in other sports who can rip it up on a skateboard as well, now that’s awesome. For someone who can rip at surf, snow and skate... now that’s an amazing athlete and I have to give up to the guys who can make it through all three safely because they are all dangerous disciplines! RIS: Have you been spending much time on vert? SC: I try and skate at least 2-3 times a week about two hours a day because of my family life. But when i’m on the road or at a contest, sometimes i can get more days in, but then i get exhausted these days being 46 and trying to keep up:) RIS: How do you keep up a skateboarding career, artist career, all while being a good husband and father at the same time? SC: It’s called having Jesus in me life to keep me balanced, my priorities in check and he gives me the strength to make it through all the storms and diversity that may come my way. You said “good” husband and if you see anything good in me, that’s because i have Jesus as my guidance counselor and the one who influences my life today.
TEAM REVOLT RIS:What keeps you going? SC: What’s keeps me going is i love Life and i love God, i have a purpose to live and that to Give HIM all the glory and praise because without God in my life, i really have nothing, but empty promises, unfulfilled dreams and no explanation in why i even exist and do what i do, but one things for sure... it’s not about me.
INTERVIEW
DEAN RANDAZZO
RIS:Any advice for the next generation following in your footsteps? SC: Stay away from drug’s, alcohol, cigarettes and try and restrain from sex before marriage because thos things will ruin anything you have a passion for and destroy your dreams to become successful, happy and at peace with your life. Seek guidance daily and stay humble, because in life... there’s always something to learn about yourself and the people around you. We are all special, important, influencial and have a purpose for living, we are not an accident nor a mistake. If you ever feel unloved by your parents, family, friends or peers, just remember... Jesus loves you and he wants to know you:) RIS: Seriously Steve, It is an honor and a privilege to have you on Team Revolt. Thanks for taking the time to talk with us. I know our readers are going to be stoked as well! SC: Thanks for the opportunity to let me share my life with you guys! I will do my best to represent team REVOLT in the best, most positive and loving manner, plus i’m honored & privileged to be on your team as well... so thank you!
RIS: Why aren’t you exhausted? SC: I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me- Philippians 4:13 RIS:How old are your kids? SC: I have a 13 year old daughter named Kayla from a previous marriage that did not work out years ago. But i got re-married 5 years ago to my wife Rachael who we both had our son Caleb who is 4 now and a daughter name Clover who will turn 2 years old late October. RIS:What are they good at & are they skateboarders? SC: My kids are good at not listening, disobeying and arguing, just kidding... but not really:) actually they all Love music very much. Kayla’s a great dancer and she plays the drum as so does my son Caleb. Both Kayla and Caleb skateboard as well. Clover, she has no fear, so i’m sure she’s gonna be one too watch out for if she ever gets into a sport like skateboarding, surfing or snowboarding because she’ll go for it! RIS:Who do you think will be giving you the best run for your money this year at Ultimate Boarder? SC: I’m not quite sure, who’s entering these days, but if it’s any of the young pro’s, who i actually don’t comptete against these days because we have our own skate division named the Master, it’s will be all of them. The first year it was Andy Mac, then last year it was Christian Hosoi, so who knows? RIS: What is your strategy for a win? SC: lots of water (hydration), practice, preparation and a positive attitude!

CHRIS COPE Awakening the Giant Within Interview by Nicholas Armitage Photography by Scott Hirano
If you don’t know who this man is yet, you will soon. His name is Chris Cope and he’s about to become famous.

He is one of 14 contestants who made the cut for the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter, the UFC’s runaway hit reality show. The show premieres March 30th, with an estimated audience of three million viewers. We caught up with Chris before he got swept away on the talk show circuit. Here’s what he had to say: RIS: You just finished competing on The Ultimate Fighter. How was it? CC: In the words of Charles Dickens, it was the best of times; it was the worst of times. I had a lot of fun, met some great guys, had awesome coaching and training, but it was intense. I had a mike on me everywhere I went and cameras were all over as well, even in the bathrooms. The lights were constantly on and it was almost impossible to sleep. There was no contact allowed with the outside world for 6 weeks, no Internet, no Facebook, nothing. And the only books you were allowed to read were the Bible and the Koran. RIS: Sounds like a sensory deprivation experiment. How did you handle it? CC: I just looked deep into myself and asked how badly I wanted it. My choices were simple after that. RIS: You mentioned in conversation you tried out 4 times before for the show. Why did you want it so bad? CC: For me, The Ultimate Fighter reality show is a great way to get to the UFC if you can win it. And the UFC is definitely the best of the best. I’m like a hunter going on Safari and the UFC is the biggest lion in the jungle. It’s up to me if I can bag it or not. RIS: But why MMA in general? What’s the attraction? CC: When I was younger, I trained extensively in traditional Martial Arts. I still love them to this day, but just didn’t feel they allowed me the opportunity to really test myself. MMA lets me do that. It’s a true gut check sport, where someone is trying to smash y our face in or break your arm. To deal with that, you have to master your fears, face the man across the cage from you and impose your will on him. That’s a test I willingly impose on myself. RIS: Gotcha. So you’re on some kind of Vision Quest? CC: The Bible says that “As Iron Sharpens Iron, So One Man Sharpens Another.” I’m trying to grow as a human being, evolve myself however possible. And fighting helps me to do that. Some people have meditation; I have fists in my face. RIS: We’ve recently seen another quote: “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”. Those seem to be words you live by. CC: Yeah, that’s a great quote. I’ve never been the most talented guy in the room, so I’ve always known I had to outwork everyone. That’s why wrestlers like Jon Fitch from the UFC are my heroes. They’re grinders. Just everyday guys who bust their asses and make it happen. That’s how I would like to be remembered as well. RIS: So where do you go from here? CC: I’ve always had 3 goals for myself in Mixed Martial Arts. One of them is to fight for the UFC, the second is to fight in Japan, and the third is to hold a belt in a major organization. I’m going to keep working until I get to where I want or die trying. RIS: Seems like you’re on your way to a successful fighting career. CC: I don’t look at it as a career. I’ve always said I’m a Martial Artist who just fights professionally. For my actual career, I plan to go to law school and become a Sports Attorney who can help out fighters like myself one day. RIS: Good luck with that. It’s refreshing to know you want to give back. By the way, what’s up with Tony Robbins? We heard you follow him pretty closely. CC: I like what Tony has to say. He’s all about self-empowerment, self-improvement, taking action and changing your life for the better. Who wouldn’t want that? And the truth is that it’s achievable for everyone. They just need to believe in their dreams and have the discipline to act on them. RIS: Words of wisdom from Chris Cope. Maybe you’re going to become the next Chuck Norris and people can come up with one-liners about you and put your face on t-shirts. CC: Haha. That would be funny, but no one can replace Chuck. He’s one of a kind. RIS: We like the humility. If you don’t want to promote yourself, is there anyone you do want to give props to? CC: Absolutely. First, I want to thank my parents. Without them I would be nothing, literally. I also want to thank all the people over the years who helped me get to where I’m at right now. You know who you are. And I especially want to thank my team at The Arena MMA Gym. The guys there are great and the coaching is phenomenal. My Coach Pat Speight is going to be the next Greg Jackson, mark my words. And my manager there (and Coach as well) Jeff Clark has been a huge help with my career. Without guys like them you just can’t make it these days. Fighting truly is a team sport and I’m really glad to everyone at The Arena on my side. Awesome Chris, you’ve been great. We wish you good fortune on your journey. We’ll see you again on the other side.

ALLSTAR WEEKEND Story & Photo by Kai Paul
This year during NBA All Star weekend Power Balance was well represented both on and off the court. A group of Power Balance athletes gathered to watch the action on the court and show love and support for their fellow team members participating in All-Star weekend. Power Balance had two members of their athlete community participating in All-Star weekend, Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks, and Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls. Other notable athletes were in attendance such as Blake Griffin, Kevin Garnet, and All Star game MVP Kobe Bryant wearing PB. The weekend turned out to be action packed with Brandon Jennings playing in a high scoring rookie dunk fest, and Derrick Rose starting for the first time as an All- Star. Meanwhile, an eclectic mix of athletes got together in the Power Balance suite, including NFL Linebacker Nic Harris, Pro Skaters Eric Koston and Jack Curtin, and Pro Surfer Evan Geiselman. You get a feeling that one of the exciting things about this brand is that they have a community of athletes from different spectrums who respect one another and feel they are part of something bigger. The experiences that can be shared by athletes of this caliber is something that transcends beyond their sport. Another member of the Power Balance community, Ryan Sheckler, knows this well, as he gathers some of the best skaters and influential athletes every year for his Sheckler Foundation Skate for A Cause event in Lake Forest. It will be a great chance for the Power Balance community to come together again, support one of their team members, and give back. This year the event is Saturday, May 14th at the Etnies skatepark in Lake Forest, California. INTERVIEW
EVERYONE LOVES YOU WHEN YOU’RE DEAD By Eric Hendrikx
L
ast week while packing my bags for Cabo San Lucas, Mexico I loaded my carry-on with the sun basking essentials: trunks, sandals, a pocketful of Mexican pesos to tip a margarita slinging waiter, and the perfect book to find solace in my literary bubble surrounded by salty azure waters. I picked the latest book from Neil Strauss – Everyone Loves You When You’re Dead; a collection of twenty years of celebrity interviews he conducted during his tenure at the New York Times and Rolling Stone magazine. From Snoop Dogg to Johnny Cash, Madonna to Led Zeppelin, Mike Tyson to Paul McCartney (the staggering list of celebrities goes on) Strauss reveals deep moments of truth found within the words of his interviewees, painting imagery of their anger, comedy, confusion, vivid notions of death. These moments of validity, path, and enlightenment thread organically throughout the book and materialize just when you need them to. Amply-packed and standing by to board a south-of-theborder bound flight I got on the phone with Neil to talk about his newest literary endeavor. Amidst his promotional book tour he spared time to highlight the extraordinary span of his books’ themes. NEIL STRAUSS INTERVIEW RIS: You’ve written six going on seven New York Times bestsellers. What has been the most thrilling book for you to write? NS: Marilyn Manson’s book was definitely the most fun to write because there was a ton of fucking partying and craziness surrounding him all the time. I was writing for the New York Times during that period and I would wake up on the couch each morning with the remains of excess and decadence all around me. RIS: To what extent did you integrate yourself into the band when you wrote your next book The Dirt? NS: Completely. And not just on tour with them but also with each member of the band and their own personal world - interviews with Vince Neil in the Vanna room, with Nikki Sixx at his place, with Mick Mars at his place on the outskirts of Los Angeles, with Tommy Lee at his post-Pamela place in Malibu. I would see each of them individually and then as they came together as Mötley Crüe. Of all the biographies I’ve written, that one took the longest because they were the most dysfunctional. RIS: The Dirt reads as four completely separate biographies because each chapter is told by only one member of the band. NS: The challenge was that I had to do an autobiography of a band and yet I had never read a band autobiography before. So I reached out for a book as my literary model, which I do for all my books. For The Dirt my literary model was As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner, where each sec-
38 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
tion of the book is written by a different brother on this inane journey to bury their dead mother. Along the way you see it from each different brother’s perspective, whether it’s the headstrong brother who was kind of like Nikki Sixx or the more layback brother who is similar to Tommy Lee. I had rules that everyone had to abide by to make it work. One rule was that you can’t read anyone else’s section until it was done - they could only read their own sections. The other rule was that once you had the chance to read the entire book you could not change anything in anyone else’s section. However, you could respond to it in your own section. They stuck to the rules I laid out and I think that’s one of the reasons why the book carried that integral conflict that is truth to how a band relates. RIS: Most memorable moment during the writing of The Dirt? NS: I’d say it was before I started the book, the moment I first met them and also the moment they got arrested. I was walking backstage to greet the band for the first time and the security guards were calling the police on them because of some violence during the show. I ran back to warn them but it was coincidently Nikki’s birthday and he thought it was a birthday prank. The police came and arrested them; Tommy Lee was still in his leather shorts from being on stage. And as they were being led out, two things let me know how cool this band was: One was that Vince Neil did not stop blow drying his hair throughout the whole arrest. Like, that’s just how often they get arrested. And secondly, as they were being walked out in handcuffs by three or four police officers, two fans came up to them with a copy of Shout at the Devil and asked the guys to autograph it. Like, they were so used to seeing them in handcuffs that it didn’t deter them from asking for an autograph. RIS: And you kept the rockstar theme by rolling right into a biography with Dave Navarro? NS: Yes, I lived with Dave for a year while he was basically shooting up cocaine every fifteen minutes and doing heroine every three hours. That’s a dark fuckin’ book, man. RIS: What was the most memorable moment while working with Jenna Jameson? NS: Sitting in her place in Scottsdale, Arizona while she was telling me about her acting abilities in porn films. Then, sitting there with Jenna and watching her porn films as she
fast forwarded through all the sex scenes so that we could watch her acting parts. In fact, while working with Jenna, I actually wrote a porn script for her that won an award for Best Movie of the Year at AVN. RIS: In The Game, why is it important to insult a girl after giving her a few compliments if you’re interested in gaining her attention? NS: The Game is the most misunderstood book I’ve written. Insulting a girl is not important. What is important is that if you approach a woman who is often hit on and she is not already attracted to you, then it is highly important to actively demonstrate that you are not hitting on her. If you are a male approaching a super attractive woman in a bar or nightlife situation, there is a fine line to walk in order to show her that you are not hitting on her, where she might feel like getting away, or more likely, her friends would try to protect her from you hitting on her. The correct approach is to be more comfortable and treat her more like how an older brother treats a younger sister. It sends a message that you really don’t give a fuck, even though you really do. Insulting her would be stupid. An insult to a beautiful woman is the same as a compliment - it’s just a guy trying too hard. The goal is not to compliment her either but to buy yourself an opportunity to compliment her later. A guy walking right up to a girl and saying “You’re pretty” is the same as if he just walked right up to her and said “I want to have sex with you.” You want to show her that you’re not after her by carefully teasing her and ignoring her, just like you might in a group with your younger sister. And then later, after you get to know her and find out who she is and you talk a little bit and connect, that’s when you’ve bought yourself the credibility to pay her the compliment. RIS: Jenna’s book came before The Game. Had you been developing any of these pick up techniques at that point in time? Was the temptation to use them on Jenna Jameson tempting. NS: Right, I never used the techniques on Jenna for two reasons: One, since we were working together, I always respect that relationship. I always desexualize anyone I’m working with. And secondly, she was married at the time. I did use them on her pornstar friends and it worked out well. I would get them interested, get them into the friend zone, and then finally it would just work. Continued on pg. 40...

very person has those particular songs, and musical styles that shape their lives. But for Justin Warfield and Adam Bravin (aka Adam 12), their influences not only became their passion and reality, it literally became their lives. Growing up in the valley just outside of LA, and after years of following each other’s DJ careers, the two finally came together at a friend’s BBQ. She Wants Revenge was born, and they have been creating incredible songs ever since. With the upcoming release of their new self-produced album Valleyheart at the end of May, She Wants Revenge has converged on a wicked tour, which started at SXSW and is ending at Coachella. Talk about starting and ending with a bang. They are out promoting their new single “Take the World.” With a sound style very reminiscent of a modern 80’s English post-punk rock band, they have definitely caught my ear. I had to find out a little more about their style of music, and where the sound came from, so I got Justin on the phone in hopes of him answering some of those questions. He did. RIS: Can you explain to me how a guy from San Fernando Valley, has the vocal sound of someone that came from England? JW: Is that what you hear? I think the short answer to your question, I feel like this album Valleyheart is the most original piece of music that we’ve done. That is truly indicative of who we are as songwriters and musicians. As far as the style of music that we make, even if we shed the influences, and get to the core of whom we are. Every
“We’re not interested in exploring the past, so much as we are trying to find ourselves in the future” band starts making music, if not with a blueprint, but with a style in mind. Whether you’re going to be a hardrock band, or singer songwriter, or dance music, at the end of the day there are only so many types of rock n roll. There are generations of bands who grew up on Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and the Stones. We just so happened to be of a certain age, that while we did grow up on all those bands, the things that impacted us during our teens, and our most impressionable time, when we chose for ourselves, just happen to be bands like Depeche Mode, Psychedelic Furs, and The Cure. In the beginning we started making songs, just two guys writing, it just started coming out that way. We embraced it, we didn’t fight it, but as time grew and we played shows on the road as a live band, we definitely started to flex our muscles on our own, and find out a little more about who we were, which we found out, that was more than the sum of our influences. I would say there is always going to be strains of influences that one can hear through out the album. There’s no getting around the fact. Some people grew up listing to Robert Plant and now they’re a hardrock singer. I grew up listening to David Bowie; he’s one of my biggest influences. But for me personally as well as for Adam, we’re not interested in exploring the past, so much as we are trying to find ourselves in the future, and grow as musicians. RIS: Speaking of your idols like Depeche Mode, and the Psychedelic Furs. You got to tour with them. Who and what did you learn touring with the bands you grew up listening to? JW: Yeah, totally grew with. Of all the tours I’ve been on I would have to say the two bands I learned the most from would be Placebo and Depeche Mode. I’ve known Placebo for a really long time. I’ve played on a lot of show dates
with them. Their level of professionalism, and how seriously they take it, and how much they bring. They’re like a total killing machine of a live band. They’re just a pleasure to watch. Their commitment to it is really deep. When we toured with Depeche Mode. That was really like the biggest learning experience ever for us. I mean, touring with Depeche Mode was like going to Grad-School, and going “Ok, this is how it’s done!” There’s just no better band, at least in the vein of the type of stuff that we like, he’s the best front man in the business. So for me as a front man, and watching Dave Gahan every night, standing on the side of the stage while they played the songs that completely informed our lives, it doesn’t get much better than that. Dave would get off stage and wipe down with a towel, give me a big hug and say, “great show tonight, you guys were great tonight.” It was really inspiring. Every night that we would watch them, it would make us push our game further. The Furs was really less about learning, but more about enjoying them as a fan. It’s not the entire live band; their line-up has changed over the years. Fundamentally it still has Richard and his brother, who’s a great sax and keyboard player. For me it was more about Richard and the band, and going, wow, that’s the voice I sang along to for all those years. I think there’s an opportunity to learn from everyone we tour with, but to open for your heroes and legends is a whole other story than your average band. Not everyone gets to do that. RIS: It is very rare that you actually get the chance to play with the groups you grew up with. JW: It’s pretty surreal. I mean there is definitely a point where it becomes normal, that’s when you have to step back and go, “this isn’t normal, this is amazing.” We are very fortunate. Continued on pg.40...

INTERVIEWS
NEIL STRAUSS INTERVIEW continued... RIS: Everyone Loves You When You’re Dead comes off as a collection of celebrity interviews as well as an autobiography. NS: Exactly. The book is covertly my autobiography of twenty years of my life as I was interviewing different rockstars and pop stars while traveling around the world to do so. At the same time, I keep myself out of the actual interviews as much as possible because I wanted to get to find out something about these huge icons and see who they are when their walls come down. RIS: So you went through years of tapes of interviews and retranslated them? NS: Yeah man, The Game was a really intense book and then I did another intense book about survival called Emergency, where I spent two years literally learning how to rebuild civilization by oneself if necessary. Both subjects were so intense I thought I would just do this book as a break, a collection of my favorite articles I’ve written, that I could toss together in like two months. Instead, I got caught up on this concept of finding these moments of truth within the interviews where we could really see into the soul and workings of each person I interviewed. The book ended up taking me two years to write. I had the transcriber notate every cough, every pause, any change in tonality, background noise, interruptions, everything. Then after going through them with a fine-toothed comb, I found these great moments, some of which I had completely missed first time around. RIS: How has writing ELYWYD changed your life? NS: What I can see is my own development, not just as a writer, but as a person. When I was doing these interviews I was asking a lot of questions that I was trying to figure out at the time. So like when I interviewed Led Zeppelin for example, Page and Plant actually, I was a really young and nervous reporter who had maybe slept with two girls in his whole life. To me these guys were just as important musically as they were sexually, because you know, I had read Hammer of the Gods. At one point during the interview Jimmy Page stopped me and asked, “Do you have any questions that don’t involve sex?” I could see through the interviews the things that I was grappling with at the time. It was a series of interviews by a guy who went from being made fun of for being naïve and young to a guy that many of those musicians look to for advice on their careers and lives. It was really interesting and rewarding to listen to that transformation.
RIS: Is that evident in ELYWYD? What is the chronology? NS: I leave dates out of my books because books are permanent. They’re not like articles which come and go. They are more about storytelling. I arranged all the articles in ELYWYD thematically and through connective tissue without regard for the timelines or dates. It’s not a rock history book. To me it’s about the people and humanity. It’s written so that even if a person who picks up the book doesn’t know a single musician in it, the hope is that they still find it a page-turner. RIS: I love Snoop Dogg interviews where you were riding along with him to go get diapers while conducting the interview. NS: I like the Snoop Dogg interview because it’s just so honest and it’s a part of him that no one has ever seen. He’s so angry during the interview but it’s what was going on at the time with him and his business. Also, you’ll see at the end of the book Act Ten is really poignant because I talk to a lot of people near the end of their lives, some just before death. I talked to musicians who found out they had cancer and only had a little bit left to live. I spoke to one musician who had just had a stroke and was only able to utter a couple of words. So yeah, the end of the book really gets to the heart of why we are here, what’s it all for and deeper topics like that. RIS: Did your mom read the Marilyn Manson book? NS: Yeah, the only book I was scared to have my parents read was The Game. I tore a couple of pages out before I gave them a copy. It’s one thing to imagine Marilyn Manson doing those things, because he’s not their son. Imagining me doing it is another story. RIS: I’m headed to Mexico. Is there any advice you want to impart on me maybe from your book Emergency that might help me? NS: You can get kidnapping insurance. [laughs] You should be fine man. In most vacation spots you don’t even know that there are bodies in the streets elsewhere. So yeah, enjoy your trip! Books by Neil Strauss: The Long Hard Road Out of Hell by Marilyn Manson with Neil Strauss Don’t Try This at Home: A Year in the Life of Dave Navarro with Neil Strauss The Dirt: The Autobiography of Mötley Crüe with Neil Strauss How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale by Jenna Jameson with Neil Strauss The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists by Neil Strauss Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life by Neil Strauss Everyone Loves You When You’re Dead by Neil Strauss
SHE WANTS REVENGS continued... RIS: I’m glad you appreciate it, and that you don’t take it for granted that this is the way it is, because it’s not, it is a pretty damn special thing. JW: Well some people are larger than life. So you can’t take it for granted. Dave, Martin, and Andre are the nicest guys on the planet. I mean, it’s Depeche Mode, they are an institution. They pretty much are the Rolling Stones of my generation. RIS: How was SXSW this year? JW: South by was fun, it was really good. It’s and insane amount of people converging on a city not set up for it. Every year it gets bigger, and bigger, it’s pretty crowded, it’s getting pretty ridiculous, you can’t even drive around, the traffic is like Moscow now. This year it’s been co-opted by the big rappers, and the big pop stars. I sort of think as more outlets for promoting ones music become fewer and far between; more major artists are reaching out however they can, just to get noticed. So you’re going to get a Kanye West or a Puff Daddy going, “I want to go to SXSW, I want to get some attention like those young buzz bands.” Anyway, we had 3 great shows, it’s nice after 6 or 7 years to be able to go there and play to a completely packed house. This was a great warm up for our tour, and to help promote the new single. RIS: Coachella is coming up. Have you ever played there before? JW: Yeah, right after we came off the Depeche Mode tour, we immediately went and played Coachella. Depeche Mode headlined the main stage, we headlined the outdoor theater, and it was crazy. Our first

real heavy year 2006-07 as a band, playing Coachella was the cherry on top. We haven’t play there since, so this will be fun. The whole reason we’re on the road right now is to warm up for that, and since we have so much new music to play. We’re really excited.
Be sure to catch up with She Wants Revenge at the Belly Up Tavern on April 2, 2011, if you happen to have missed that show, you can always head out to Indio, and catch them on Sunday April 17th at Coachella.

RIS: If you could collaborate with any artist out there, who would it be? Mr. Dee Jay: Jay-Z. That guy is unreal. Seems like everything he touches is golden and I have always wanted to watch him work. I hear he never writes down his lyrics, he just says them off the top of his head. That’s true talent. RIS: Your playing for us on April 13th at Typhoon Saloon, what can we expect hear on that night? Mr. Dee Jay: Rock, Hip Hop, House, Mash-ups..... Mr. Dee Jay’s lifelong passion for music and his determination to spread progressive sounds has opened doors for himself within the entertainment industry. Mr. Dee Jay has already earned himself an endorsement from both Jagermeister and Alpinestars Apparel as well as a 2010 “Best Local DJ” nomination (PromSD.com). His shows throughout Southern California are proof of his immediate success and admiration for the audience. Here’s 10 more things you need to know about Mr. Dee Jay. RIS: Who or what made you decide to become a DJ? Mr. Dee Jay: I don’t think any one person made me decide to be a DJ. I remember having a deep love for music as a kid. My parents were always really cool about letting me listen to whatever I wanted, so I learned about the diversity of music young. Also, I have always had a good ear for music. It seems to come very naturally to me. I started out Making mix tapes and playing instruments just for fun throughout my life. As I got older, and realized that having ADD at a desk job is no fun, that’s when I made the jump into being a professional DJ. I am truly blessed to be doing what I love for a living. RIS: How did it come to be that you chose Mr. Dee Jay as your stage name? Mr. Dee Jay: I am not big on stage names, so I was just going by DEE JAY, but that didn’t really stand out and confused people. My man Reggie Warlock said, “you need something unique, you should be Dr. Dee Jay.” I said, “I like that but let’s say Mr. Dee Jay” and it stuck. Been teaching class ever since.
March 19th- World Tuned Radio (online) with WhoD Hell RIS: Describe your style of music. Mr. Dee Jay: Open format and high energy. RIS: Can you briefly take us through the process of creating a song? Mr. Dee Jay: I use Ableton for all my song making needs. Won’t get into the techie stuff but it can come from a thought or idea. I am always thinking about music and sounds. I love a lot of bass!

SOUND ADVICE
HEAR THIS Reviews By Leslie Krouse
The Kills – Blood Pressures
Genre – Blues/Punk The Kills are back with sultrier searing guitars, seductively driven rhythms, sexually charged, and lyrically savvy songs, “Blood Pressures” is sure not to disappoint. Having released this album three years after “Midnight Boom,” and with Alison Mosshart’s brief fling with “The Dead Weather” along side of Jack white, and Jamie Hince who became a paparazzi target on the arm of supermodel Kate Moss, it seems that the duo have finally re-united for the sake of all mankind. The sputtering intro of “Satellite” yields to Hince’s moody guitar and Mosshart’s alluring drawn out “oooooooh”s, each of which provoke an immense emotional reaction. The rumbling sound of “DNA” offers the meanest guitar piece on the album while Mosshart teases with the occasional glimpse of her unrestrained vocals. “Heart is a Beating Drum” and “Nail in My Coffin” both simmer (each utilizing a funny ping pong ball-sounding hand clap), “Damned If She Do” is strewn with shotgun hooks, contorting and kicking as Mosshart’s lyrics trickle poisons down your ear, and “You Don’t Own the Road” adds a snapping bounce that is unrivaled elsewhere on the LP. Out on Domino Records on April 5, 2011
Snoop Dogg – Doggumentary
Genre – Multi-Layered I think the second the Dogg finds something to rhyme with Contradiction; he’ll have two words that define his life. Husband, father, player, stoner, and if his mother had her way “A preacher for God.” There is one avenue this multi-layered artist excels at, producing another hit. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Snoop’s 11th album unequivocally celebrates his all-over-the-map persona. Setting the bar high, Snoop Dogg considers his 2011 release Doggumentary the sequel to his classic 1993 debut album, Doggystyle. The album features production from the likes of Swizz Beats, DJ Khalil, and Scott Storch, while guest artists include Kanye West, John Legend, Wiz Khalifa, and he even teams up with Willie Nelson in “Superman.” “Toyz N Da Hood” is a cartoonish version of the G-funk he helped pioneer -- dude even pairs “gin and juice” with “Mother Goose.” But when Snoop gets experimental with the Gorillaz on the interstellar “Sumthin Like This Nite,” he proves he can still push hip-hop’s boundaries. A couple of stand-out tracts for me, the first single release “Wet” couldn’t seem to get the chorus out of my head, you’ll have to listen for yourself, I can’t divulge the content. Then there’s “Wonder What It Do (feat. Uncle Chucc),” which adds a little bit of the classics. Be sure to catch Snoop Dogg on 4/20/11 @ 4th and B. Out Now!harmonies.
The Airborne Toxic Event – All at Once
NEW RELEASES
Genre – Indie Rock The Airborne Toxic Event is set to release their greatly anticipated second album “All at Once” on April 26, 2011. The record was produced in Los Angeles by Dave Sardy, who also produced albums by Oasis, Band of Horses, LCD Soundsystem, Wolfmother, and Autolux. This talented group of artists consists of Mikel Jollett (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Steven Chen (guitar, keyboards), Noah Harmon (electric bass, upright bass, backing vocals), Daren Taylor (drums) and Anna Bulbrook (viola, keyboards, tambourine, backing vocals). These guys definitely have a sound all their own, but there are some remnants of Bowie, U2, and quite possibly a little Springsteen. The vast array of instrumental implementation carefully choreographed together, creates and exciting and well balanced album, allowing each song to stand on its own, or as a collective whole, making “All at Once” a complete package. With dramatic highs and somber lows, the journey through “All at Once” is an album that we can all relate with. Some of the standout songs include, “Numb,” “Strange Girl,” “Welcome to your Wedding Day,” and album opener and namesake “All at Once.” Unwritten Law – Swan March 29th

HANNA
(Focus Features)
Joe Wright gained attention for his adaptations of the novels Pride and Prejudice and Atonement. Now he tries his hand at an original script and an actioner to boot. The story concerns a young, sheltered girl raised to be an assassin and suddenly let loose in a brave new world. Wright tries to overcompensate for his lack of action experience with a lot of over-cutting at the beginning but once he settles into the story he delivers a perversely beautiful and ominous thriller with fairy tale overtones. Teenaged Saoirse Ronan is wonderful as the title character and Cate Blanchett is something of a wicked witch. Opens April 8. Rating: RRRR

(Summit Entertainment)
It’s kind of like Groundhog Day but without Bill Murray. Jake Gyllenhaal is a soldier who keeps getting sent back to a commuter train that’s going to blow up. Each time he goes back he has eight minutes to figure out who the bomber is. The film is directed by Duncan Jones (who made Moon) and it has some intriguing sci-fi elements. Too bad it tries to wrap everything up too neatly and cheerily at the end. Opens April 1. Rating: RRR
WIN WIN
(Fox Searchlight)
You know what’s revolutionary about Win Win? It’s a well-crafted, subtly scripted film about threedimensional characters. Whoa! What a concept. Tom McCarthy (who gave us The Station Agent and The Visitor) once again writes and directs an engaging, character driven film with a fine ensemble cast. There’s more humor this time out and high school wrestling gets a rare spotlight. The film stars Paul Giamatti, Jeffrey Tambor, Amy Ryan, Bobby Cannavale, and impressive newcomer Alex Shaffer. Definitely a win-win. Opens April 1. Rating: RRRRR
SUCKER PUNCH (Warner Brothers)
Zack Snyder needs to be sucker punched and then have his DGA card revoked for making this painfully bad chick flick. There’s more crying than action and not enough cleavage or fan service to make anyone over the age of twelve want to pay it any attention. Snyder shot his wad with 300 and it’s been sloppy seconds ever since. Please do NOT pay money to see this film. Now playing. Rating: R
