Hi Leslie, I picked up a copy of the new Revolt. WOW! I’m glad you like the record so much. It’s pretty crazy seeing our little band’s review next to Dinosaur Jr., Grizzly Bear and Dirty Projectors etc.....Those are some pretty heavy hitters. Anyways, thanks so much for the kind words. We get really psyched when we hear that people are into the music that we are making. Also, does Revolt ever throw parties? I’d love to attend one. It looks like you guys could throw a good party. Thanks again, Matt Hey Matt, You are more than welcome, that’s what we are here for. Thanks for putting out such great music, I get just as excited to see good talent in our little town. Cheers, Leslie

COOL GEAR

NEW PRODUCT PREVIEW

AVISO Cole Trunk Board

_

(AKA BD3) Originally this board was designed for Japan. They wanted a board that had the volume of a regular shortboard, but could easily be taken on trains, buses, or could fit easily into the trunk of a small car. Hence the name “trunkboard” was born. This short, stubby design, features a very low entry rocker, with a moderate amount of tail rocker. The deep “bonzer” style concave runs full length from the nose, through the fins, and out the tail. This full-length concave allows water to flow easily through the bottom of the board, drastically reducing drag, as well as further lowering the entry rocker. Even though it is short, the low entry rocker combined with this full length concave allows this board to catch waves and plane through sections with ease. The “bonzer” concave also helps smooth out the turns and helps to keep the board very drivey for its size.1,120. www.avisosurf.com

NIKON D3

MATUSE Tumo Full with Hood

SONY PS3 Slim

_

It’s here, after perhaps the longest period of speculation ever Nikon has today lifted the covers on their first full-frame digital SLR, the new 12.1 megapixel D3. The D3 is all about speed and sensitivity, twelve megapixels on a big CMOS chip means large photosites (8.45 µm pitch to be precise) and that adds up to base sensitivity of ISO 200 to 6400 with an additional two stop boost over that (up to ISO 25600). The other side of the speed story (apart from blistering AF and shutter lag) is that the D3 can shoot at nine frames per second with AF tracking or eleven frames per second without. An amazing 3.0” 922,000 pixel LCD monitor with Live View, HDMI video output and even a virtual horizon function which can tell you when you’re holding the camera perfectly level. There’s too much to fit here so we crammed as much as we can into a preview. The D3 will be available in November, at around 5000. www.nikon.com

Sony hopes that a trimmed-down--and less expensive--PS3 Slim will similarly invigorate sales of the PlayStation 3, which has lagged behind the Nintendo Wii and the Microsoft Xbox 360 and has taken some of the luster off the PlayStation brand (even as earlier versions of the PS3 received high marks from this publication). To many industry observers, the Slim PS3 represents a moment of reckoning for the PS3--a chance at redemption if you will--and clearly some serious engineering has gone into the creation of Sony’s latest black gaming box and media player. ENVIRONMENT

MOTHER EARTH NEWS U.S. MILITARY ACKNOWLEDGES GLOBAL WARMING Climate Change Seen as Threat to U.S. Security National security experts and retired military officials are in agreement that climate change poses a threat to our way of life, to the global order, and even to how we keep ourselves secure.

countries – especially the United States which is the largest per-capita emitt er of greenhouse gases – have wrong. not done enough.

I WANT YOU...

To know I was

China Aims to “Leapfrog” U.S. in Clean Energy Race Imagining China as a giant green frog seems a little ridiculous, but, as Peter Ford of the Christian Science Monitor reported recently in a piece entitled “China’s Green Leap Forward,” China’s intent to “leapfrog” the United States in the clean energy race is far from ridiculous - it may soon be a reality.

& I’m willing to do more

Those countries are attentively watching events in Washington to see whether there is truly momentum for action.

if the Senate will let me...

The recent G-8 summit, which sought to advance climate negotiations prior to meetings in Copenhagen in December, saw developing countries reject binding emission targets out of fear that it would stifle their development, as well as out of a sense that rich developed countries – the principal culprits of global warming – weren’t doing enough. They are right and wrong.

.

After eight years of denial and dithering by the Bush administration, the Obama administration has now aggressively sought to revive international climate negotiations. But to forge an international agreement that comprehensively tackles climate change, the United States must lead by example.

Transfers of clean technology from rich to poor countries should ensure that development is not impeded and poor countries, which are likely to be disproportionately affected the fallout of climate change, have every interest in ensuring aggressive action is taken. However, emerging economies are right that rich developed

The House of Representatives recently took a hugely important step in passing climate change legislation, but the legislation now looks to be bogged down in the Senate. If the impact on our way of life and the generations that follow us isn’t enough, Senators should recognize that their inaction has important consequences for our diplomacy and security.

While the U.S. languidly inches forward in clean energy RD&D, China’s burgeoning clean and renewable energy industries are growing at an unprecedented pace for a developing nation. Much more than a response to the suffocating pollution clogging the airways of its major cities, the explosion of clean energy technology is part of a national strategy to dominate the industry. As Ford succinctly puts it: China price” and “China speed” are poised to snatch the lion’s share of the next multitrillion-dollar global industry - energy technology... Indeed, China is pushing ahead on renewable technologies with the fervor of a new space race. C’mon USA! GROW A PAIR.

THE CHEVY VOLT GETS 230 MPG?

General Motors announced that its Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric car had delivered a fuel-economy rating of 230 miles a gallon — which sounds outrageous. With that kind of gas mileage, you could practically drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas on a single gallon of gas, or for around three bucks. But, of course, you wouldn’t be able to do that. G.M. said the 230 number is only for city driving, and it’s not based on the same measurement standard used to calculate the fuel economy of gas-engine or hybrid cars. In fact

a G.M. spokesman, said, “Our performance numbers are based on their methodology.” In an earlier statement, the E.P.A. said it had “not tested a Chevy Volt and therefore cannot confirm the fuel economy values claimed by G.M.” So we guess it’s up to us, the consumers, to dish out about 40 grand on this ugly piece of crap to find out the truth. & Why can’t they design something that doesnt look like every other shitty, generic, suburbanite sedan out there? C’mon USA! GROW A PAIR.

JESSE JAMES’ H-BOMB

Breaks Land Speed Record In Hydrogen Powered Vehicle

Motorcycle madman Jesse James has unofficially broken the land speed record for a hydrogen-powered vehicle, and he did it in a car that packs modern technology into a vintage racer more than 40 years old. The guy behind West Coast Choppers blazed across El Mirage Dry Lake Bed at 199.7 mph in a car he claims he spent “a couple million bucks” building. He’d been toying with the idea of an alt-fuel racer, but rather than start from scratch — as BMW did with the slick H2R racer that previously held the record — he modified a ’60s-era streamliner to run on gaseous hydrogen. “I think it’s way cooler to take an old hunk of shit that many considered useless and make it haul ass,” James told Wired.com. “It has built-in soul and history. Plus, it’s recycling.” That hunk of shit is a somewhat historic machine called the Dees Milodon Engineering - Davis B streamliner, and it is no stranger to the salt. The car once hit 237 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats using a Chrysler engine, and James says it set a record for a front-wheel-drive vehicle. It hadn’t seen action for awhile, and when James first saw the car it was hanging in a friend’s shop. “I always loved the way it looked,” James said. “Kinda like an evil flying saucer.”

16  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

After getting some design help from renowned land speed racer Mike Cook, the crew at West Coast Choppers lengthened the car 24 inches and brought the frame and suspension up to modern safety specs. James handled all the bodywork himself, then called on engine expert Kurt Urban to help develop the powerplant. They went a bit nuts, building a 572-cubic-inch twin-turbo Chevrolet engine that produces prodigious power. “BMW set the record with liquid hydrogen, which is way easier to make a motor run on but it will never be practical for everyday cars,” James told us. “The engine produces 780 horsepower and 900 foot-pounds of torque. That’s some serious power from the world’s most plentiful resource.” By that point, the only thing left to do was suit up, get in and hold on. James made his record-setting run and taped it for his TV show “Jesse James Is A Dead Man.” He fell just short of his goal of 200 mph, but it was enough to top the 186.52 mph record BMW held UPDATE Add “LandSpeed” Louise Ann Noeth to the list of people saying James didn’t set a record. She’s a racer and journalist who’s been covering land speed racing for the past decade, and she’s beyond peeved by all the attention James is getting. She calls him “a liar and a cheat when it comes to claiming a world record.” - Whatever...bitch.

10 Ocean Saving Tips 1. Reduce your plastic consumption. The most frequently collected items during beach cleanups are made of plastic — think reusable shopping bags, water bottles and utensils. 2. Make informed seafood choices. Keep a copy of the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s seafood guide in your wallet or text Blue Ocean’s FishPhone to help you choose sustainable seafood at th e grocery store or a restaurant. 3. Dispose of chemicals properly. Never pour chemicals, pharmaceuticals, oil or paint into the drain or toilets. Check with your county’s household hazardous waste program to properly dispose of or recycle chemicals and keep them out of rivers and oceans. 4. Choose green detergents and household cleaners—or make your own! Besides being better for your own health, these products are safer for the environment since what goes down the drain can end up in our oceans. 5. Get the dirt on your beachside retreat. Before you stay in a hotel on the coast, ask staff what happens to their sewage and swimming pool water, and if they source their restaurant fish from sustainable sources. 6. Find out the source of your food. Buying local, organic food reduces your carbon footprint, supports the local economy and reduces the amount of pesticides and fertilizers that end up not just in your stomach, but as run-off in rivers and oceans, too. 7. Fill your yard with native species. Reducing the amount of grass in your lawn by planting native shrubs and flower beds will provide a better habitat for birds and other wildlife and require far less water and fertilizer, which can seep into the oceans.

GREEN PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

8. Keep your beach visit clean. When visiting the beach, stay off fragile sand dunes, take your trash with you and leave plants, birds and wildlife for everyone to enjoy. Find a Conservancy coastal preserve near you. 9. Choose alternatives to coral. Whether shoppi ng for jewelry, household décor or accessories for your fish tank, do your part to leave fragile coral reef habitats untouched by buying products that aren’t made of real coral. 10. Celebrate our oceans. Whether you live inland or on the coast, we are all connected to the ocean; take the time to organize or participate in activities that restore and celebrate the ocean, and help support The Nature Conservancy’s ocean conservation work by visiting http://www.nature. org/initiatives/marine/

RSSS 2009 REVOLT SUMMER SURF SERIES

Perfect waves all day long

RSSS 3.0

THE SURF GODS CONTINUE TO SMILE ON RSSS

Anyone who knows surf, knows about the epic swell that rolled through Southern California on the weekend of July 25th. A huge storm in New Zealand pushed some serious waves to our shores just in time for the 2nd event of four in the Revolt Summer Surf Series. Overhead sets challenged the RSSS riders all day. Understandably the grom division was fairly uncrowded as many parents were not about to let their little grommets paddle out into these huge beach breaks. The big lefts peeling off the end of Crystal Pier had the crowd on their feet and the riders on their toes all day. By mid-morning the sun came out, the waves held up, and an epic day of surfing competition ensued. Pro Am new-comer Dustin Cuzion took home the new Aviso Carbon Fibre Surfboard, courtesy of Maui Lu Surf, as well as some traveling dough. Legendary Waterman Scott Chandler once again dominated the Stand Up Paddle Division, and scored a new SUP Paddle, courtesy of Bob’s Mission Surf, for his efforts. Cole Holderman showed up & blowed up the Juniors’, while Kody Clemens kicked some tiny tail in the Grom division. Jenny Quam impressed everyone & showed off what it means to ‘Surf like a girl’ She got first in Womens’. All top riders received an unreal swag bag loaded with gear from all our sponsors & friends.

The current points leader of the RSSS (Eric McHenry) as well as #2 seat Gavin Sutherland will not be in town for the 3rd event August 22. Which means, it opens up the field to just about anyone winning the event. Who will come out on top? Find out for yourself at the finals held Sept 26 at Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach. EXIT PREDICTABLE

ENTER Mauilusurf.com The recent social networking craze has spawned several new noteworthy developments such as Facebook and Twitter. The rush to create similar models, coupled with the inherent trial and error process, has produced an even newer hybrid known as “niche” networking. Birthed primarily due to a consumer backlash against spam and irrelevant content (which is especially true in the surfing world where there are no large scale interactive venues where surfers can meet, chat, sell their gear and hang out), we proudly introduce, Mauilusurf.com. Designed by surfers for surfers, Mauilusurf.com has gone live with what it believes to be is the next frontier in the evolution of surfing culture. This site is cool. Earlier surveys prior to the launch of the Mauilusurf site indicated that there was a strong need for an instant interactive Facebook/Twitter type of setting to properly service the international surfing community.”

The team at Mauilsurf.com is creating the most powerful on-line surfing community – Things to watch out for include: A chat and status update function that allows surfers real time access to communicate and display real time surfing hot spot conditions An opportunity for members to opt into a revenue generating profile through Google Adsense that will pay you for clicks on ads on pages on your profile A section where surfers can advertise gear A dating section Mauilusurf members will be able to enjoy the expected general functions social networking such as: • Edit personal profile information • Upload photos in their photo gallery • Message one another • Befriend one another • Participate in the discussion forum • Add blog content to their profile In addition to this, the site gives access to a Craigslist-style classified section to advertise any gear, accommodation, lessons, etc. to all anyone who joins. Members will be able to earn cash with an AdSense, pay per click program as well, just for opening a profile and uploading, photos, content and videos. This is the only social networking site where people can actually make money by simply participating rather than the traditional model of an entity making money off its members. The thing that ultimately separates Mauilusurf.com from other social networking sites, is that it will be completely saturated in surf culture and crossover genres such as: skate culture, tattoo art and extreme sports. Mauilusurf is proud to be currently branded by the artwork of renowned graffiti artist and muralist; Aero. His colorful, fresh and exciting work appropriately expresses the contemporary and yet “retro” vibe of Mauilusurf and we look forward to bringing you more if this exceptionally talented, Hawaiian born, San Diego resident in the upcoming weeks of our launch. http://www.aerosolarts.com. Mauilusurf recently has struck up a relationship with Revolt In Style Magazine to sponsor the RSSS at Pacific Beach in San Diego over the summer. We plan to launch right where it happens; on the beaches where we can get direct and honest participation and input from the members of the surfing community. The name Maui Lu was chosen by the founder and CEO, Chris Rousselle for his incredibly innovative and unique action sports wear design (to be announced). The name comes from the fact that the original concept for Chris’s invention came to him on a beach in Maui. Chris is not a surfer, but along with a seasoned and successful career in company start ups, he has had a life-long admiration for the sport as well as the natural beauty of surf and wave culture. Chris has a strong mandate to the MauiLuSurf staff to: keep it real, strive to promote the protection of the natural surfing environment and to serve the community with humility and respect. “Working with the people at Revolt In Style Magazine and some of the key members of the local surfing community has been a extremely rewarding and natural progression for Mauil Lu. We are proud to be a sponsor of the Revolt Summer Surf Series and to launch the site this summer in San Diego. I’ll see you on the beach. Stop by the tent and check us out”.

SHAPER’S FORUM

YOUNG GUNS Photo By Bo Cross Story By Brian Terhorst

Josh Hall and Michael Miller are continuing a classic and sacred tradition. Under the watchful eye and discerning taste of a couple of masters, they shine as the next generation of board shapers. Skip Frye and Jim Ellington serve as something like Zen Masters or ‘mentors’ to these ‘Young Guns’ of the surfing world. All four men are also business partners in a surfer’s co-op (of sorts). Housed together in a warehouse situation off of Morena Blvd, the four shapers work together in harmony creating some of the most desirable surfboards in the industry. Each shaper has their own style and niche in building some of the finest hand crafted surfboards around. Skip Frye is, well, Skip Frye. One of the legends in the sport of surfing. A world champion in the late sixties and a revolutionary shaper later, Skip Frye’s name is synonomous with classic, quality workmanship. His boards have been ridden by the best in the sport for decades and the waiting list for one of his surfboards is long and near impossible to get on. Jim Ellington a ‘machine’ of a shaper is hard to pin down to one style. He shapes everything from short boards, to fishes. Guns to longboards & stand up paddle boards, all by hand. In fact his story (and Skip Frye’s) is such an extensive read we’re gonna put the brakes on it for now and follow up in a later issue with a full blown feature. Stay tuned. Michael Miller learned from some of the greats in the industry. Working under Joe Roper in his early years he learned the art of glassing. Later he learned to shape for himself under Chris Christenson. He is currently occupied with glassing boards for Skip Frye, Josh Hall and a few others. But when he has some time for his own craft, he is a one man show. Handling all aspects of a hand built board. From concept to design, shaping, sanding, glossing, polishing, Michael does it all. Josh Hall’s boards are an interesting mix of old school (heavily influenced by his teacher Skip) and experimental shapes influenced by his own wild imagination (and even wilder team riders). Josh started off his career as the last adopted shop grom at Harry’s Surf Shop in Pacific Beach back in the nineties. Mentored by Skip Frye in his shaping room, he gradually learned the craft for himself.

26  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

During our tour of the shop & interview, team riders Mike List and Mark Garcia showed up with the lure of cold cervesas. They attempted to coerce Josh and Michael into making it a ‘short day’. Both shapers politely declined, so the team riders contributed their two cents to the interview by showing off the latest, experimental Josh Hall model. A Double Fluted Wing, Quad fin, Fish Simmons. A perfect example of what imagination and the luxury of your own production facility can produce. An experimental board like that, can go from concept, to an actual rideable product, in a week or so. When the surfboard manufacturing industry turned turtle a few years back (with the closure of Clark Foam) the rush to move the large scale production houses overseas began. However. Josh, Michael and a few other shapers capitalized on the opportunity. Almost a blessing in disguise, ‘Boutique boards’ were about to come back into their own, again. Surfing is an industry that is extremely sensitive to the economy. Most surfers don’t have money to burn. When an educated surfer is making a smart choice with his money, a custom shape will often win out. The benefits are numorous. A board shaped specifically for you, your weight & body type, your style of surfing, even the surf breaks it will be used on. Depending on the glass job a custom board will last much longer than a board simply pulled off the rack. The cost of one of these boards may be a bit more, but in the long run it makes sense for most core surfers. The amount of work and care that goes into each of their boards is staggering. A production board will have 6 - 8 different hands on each one. Shaper, sander, fins, artwork, glass.... each stage of production has a different person responsible. Josh Hall & Michael Miller oversee or handle all stages of production by themselves. Often the quality of a production board will drop compared to a custom, as a single person is responsible for every stage of production on his own boards. Josh and Michael take extra care and pride in every detail of their boards. You can get ahold of Josh Hall & Michael Miller for a custom shape of your own, but be prepared to wait a bit. The turn around on a custom shape can be as much as 4 to 6 weeks depending on the season. Contact Info: Josh Hall: www.joshhallsurfboards.com Michael Miller: www.michaelmillersurfboards.com

Featuring Top Shapers From SD This years’ Billabong Art of Shaping at the ASR Action Sports Retailer Trade Show Sept 10-12 in San Diego will feature many of the top shapers from the rich board building heritage of San Diego county. The finalized list of invitees includes Bill Bahne, Tim Bessell, Chris Christenson, Carl Ekstrom, Rick Hamon, Gary Hanel, Mike Hynson, John Kies, Gary Linden, Steve Lis, Larry Mabile, Gary MacNabb, Bob Mitsven, Rich “Toby” Pavel, Steve Pendarvis, Jim Phillips, Rusty Preisendorfer, Robin Prodanovich, Steve Seebold, Donald Takayama, Hank Warner, Xanadu and Marcio Zouvi. San Diego County is famous for its talented crew of shapers that have introduced a significant number of design innovations and developments which have had a remarkable effect on the sport of surfing and the surfboard itself. It was Gerry Lopez himself that made this statement: “We couldn’t really ride the Pipeline properly until Michael Hynson introduced us to the downrailer”. Along with Hynson’s infamous downrailer design San Diego produced such innovations as the Stevie Lis Fish, the Ekstrom asymmetrical, the Rich Pavel Speedialer, the Donald Takayama Step Deck and other notable designs. The intention of Billabong’s 2009 Art of Shaping San Diego Edition Event is to showcase and pay tribute to San Diego County shapers and their invaluable accomplishments and contributions to the art of surfboard building over the last five decades. Close examination of the list of invitees will reveal shapers from each decade that collectively have established the reputation of San Diego County as the “hotbed of innovative surfboard design, construction and forward thinking.” The Concept The concept of the “Billabong Art of Shaping Event” is simple; it is a venue to showcase the talent of San Diego surfboard shapers and craftsmen by allowing them to build boards that highlight their particular contribution or influence on the evolution of the surfboard over a particular span in time. Shapers are invited and encouraged to “create a board representing the era, style, or shape they are best known for or relate to”; whatever best motivates their creativity and talent. The shapers entry is then placed on display at the ASR trade show along with full sized images

of the shaper himself and a profile that includes information on the board he choose to build, his company or label, and his shaping history or career. The images featured at the show will be turned over to each individual shaper at the close of the event. How it Works Once an invited shaper accepts the invitation he will receive a check for $600 cash to be used towards materials. The shaper is then free to submit whatever type of board he deems appropriate; knowing he will be in competition with his peers to win bragging rights of winning the “Billabong Art of Shaping Event”, along with a check from Billabong for $2,000. The runner up will receive a free full page ad in SURFING Magazine’s “Board Builder’s Issue” featuring his boards and label. The winner of the competition is the shaper of the board that brings in the highest auction price and thus becomes the largest single donor to the Liquid Nation Ball charity; the charity chosen for the “Billabong Art of Shaping Event”. On Friday afternoon at 3:00 PM the boards will be relocated to an upstairs meeting room where they can be viewed and examined by potential buyers. Moving the boards upstairs to a meeting room off the show floor will allow invited guests from the public that have signed up and RSVP’d in advance for the evening auction to view the boards for the first time beginning at 4:00 PM. From 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM guests will be able to closely view each entry in preparation for the live auction that will begin promptly at 6:00 PM and finish before 8:00 PM. During the viewing period guests can enjoy pupu’s from Nalu’s Grille, Primo beer, Wild Rock wine, Sambazon smoothies and Smart water in an effort to prime the pump before the bidding begins. Royce Cansler and Bird will assist the auctioneer in moving through the boards quickly and efficiently once the live auction begins. The time frame involved will allow for the auctioneer and the guests planning on attending the Liquid Nation Ball adequate time to travel on to La Jolla. Guests making purchases that night will be allowed to take their purchases with them upon payment in full; or have the option of leaving their purchases behind after payment in full until the afternoon of the last day of the show. Those that choose to pick up their purchases on Saturday will find their boards returned to the display booth until the end of the show.

ERIC McHENRY’S MEXICAN HIGH

The current points leader in the Revolt Summer Surf Series took some time off to jet down to Cabo for a few days of ripping in the Mexico sun. I guess he really does know how to fly. Usually we don’t just drop in random shots...but the air is unreal. You’re welcome E.

FORD ARCHBOLD

Newest Member Of Arnette Surf Squad.

“Ford is an amazing addition to the team,” says Arnette Brand Manager, Joe Freitag. “He represents the next generation of surfers who are taking the sport to a whole new level. His positive attitude and unique, progressive style make him a perfect fit for Arnette, and we are truly excited to welcome him to the family.” Born and raised in Newport Beach, CA, Ford grew up surfing with his legendary dad, Matt Archbold, and it shows. Now 18, Ford has been killing it for years. Known to rock an ear-to-ear smile all the time, in the coming year he will hit the road for photo shoots and to compete in ASP North America Pro Junior contests. Ford is extremely motivated and hopes to earn a spot on the WCT sometime within the next six years. Definitely keep an eye on this kid, because he’s the real deal! “I’m psyched to represent Arnette because they have a long history of having amazing surfers on the team,” Ford says. “I’m stoked to slap a sticker on my board and represent them in and out of the water.” In addition to Arnette, Ford also surfs for RVCA and Etnies. INTERVIEW

“We wanted to make a true organic ‘ride the life’ surf film based on real life events and sad stories about everyday guys who happen to surf.” I had the chance to sit down and interview Raja Collins about The Outside. RIS: Could you tell us a little bit about yourself and Ari - your education, interests, past experiences, growing up surfing in San Diego? RC: I grew up in San Diego. As a kid, I competed in surfing and skating where I met Ari Davis at La Jolla Shores when I was 14 years old. We used to compete against each other and then started surfing for the same team. Over the years we always stayed in touch and became best friends. I moved to LA when I was 19 where I started acting. When I was 23, I took on my first movie and have been producing independent films, commercials, and music videos ever since. I get down to San Diego as much as possible to surf. It’s my home and I love it down there. Ari Davis was the big fish in the little pond. Also growing up in La Jolla, he competed all the time and everyone loved him. He moved up to LA with me to try acting, but realized that he wanted to go to film school at Cal State San Marcos to direct, shoot and edit. Ari came back to LA after his first short film premier screened in La Jolla called “Out of Hemet” which catapulted his drive for making movies. RIS: Why is it named The Outside? RC: “The Outside” is a metaphor. You have to get to the outside to live your life. You have to get past the waves and all of the crap to get to where the good stuff is. I was terrified of the ocean when I was a kid and my mother always used to tell me that you have to get past the breakers to really enjoy it and ride the waves where they are clean and nice. That is the way I have lived my life and we really translated that into this movie. RIS: What led you and Ari to write, direct and produce this film? RC: This was our passion project. This story just really hit home. When it came together, we just knew we had to make it. We wanted to put La Jolla on the map. That is where we are from, and that is where our passion and love of surfing and life came from. The story really drove us. It is about a local ripper that is loved by everyone and decides to enter a surf competition. After winning it, along comes the money and fame and changes him for the worse. It’s a “fall from grace” movie. But in the end, it is about how you re-create yourself in life. You always have a second chance. You don’t have to be a surfer to relate to this story. We wanted to make a true organic “ride the life” surf film based on real life events and sad stories about everyday guys who happen to surf. RIS: You have a pretty weighted cast and production team for an independent film: Nia Peeples - who every man that has seen North Shore has a crush on; Michael Graziadei; Nicky Whelan; and then you have Cris Borgnine and Lloyd Adams, on the executive production side. How did all of these parties get on board with you?

LOCAL BOYS MAKE FEATURE FILM & Use Their Old Stomping Grounds In San Diego & La Jolla As Locations By Lee Samartino

Under the warm embrace of the Southern California beach lifestyle, Ned Blakey (Michael Graziadei) aspires to ride the waves of professional surfing. Taught and inspired by his local surf legend mother (Nia Peeples), Ned heeds the call of the ocean and begins to compete in tournaments. In an instant, Ned Blakey becomes the center of the pro surf circuit, complete with a go-getting sports agent (Rob Moran) and reps flaunting major endorsement deals (Cris Judd). Despite the loyalties of his first love, Amber (Lacey Beeman) and lifelong friends, Travis, Indo and Scratch (Matt Cohen, Dante Basco and Paul McCarthy-Boyington), Ned wades into the troubled waters of fame and fortune. Tempted by the power, excess and girls (Nicky Whelan) of his newfound celebrity life, Ned must evolve or devolve. Based on the laidback La Jolla upbringing of Writer/Director Ari Davis, this coming of age tale captures the highs and lows of a true surfer’s journey riding the ever-changing waves of life. Blending in documentary-style footage of some of the most respected surf legends in the world both candidly and ripping on the water, The Outside is a must ride. Featuring Cameos and Surfing by: Taj Burrows, Taylor Knox, Sam George, Holly Beck, Timmy Curran, Rabbit Kekai and Dean Randazzo. Revolt headed to LA with surf industry guru Dave Woods (also debuting in his cameo role as himself) and local photographer Tiffany Arcand for the August 13th Beverly Hills screening of the movie, The Outside. With the cast and crew on hand, as well as surf industry legends such as Sam George and Tim Bessell, I was eagerly awaiting what these local boys turned out. The first twenty minutes of the movie were reminiscent of the days where I used to watch “90210” with my high school sweetheart, which left me wondering if I was a little old for this movie at 36. However, the movie gained its momentum and immediately put me in a place where I could relate to the characters and the plot. The cinematography was incredible for an independent film, the script was well crafted, and The Outside is a movie I would definitely see many times. These two local boys, Raja Collins and Ari Davis, deserve huge props for stepping up and creating a piece of work like this.

28  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

RC: Well, two things: The script, everyone fell in love with it. Without a good script, no one will attach themselves to it and you won’t be able to raise any money. Second was the casting and production team. I have produced four films and everyone loved Ari and his vision on this one. We ended up raising the money ourselves. Lloyd Adams and Cris Borgnine actually came on after we finished shooting and we needed help during the editing phase with press, legal, and the final round of finance. Most of the people that came aboard surf and have a deep passion for surfing. Everyone was really supportive. Kathy Mc Curdy from the San Diego Film Commission stepped up and asked for the entire movie to be shot in San Diego and she gave us all the resources to do just that. The entire San Diego community was really supportive of our efforts. RIS: What can people expect from the movie? RC: A ride-through-life story about a kid who starts with nothing, rises to the top, and falls just as fast as he rose. He really has to recreate himself and find out who he is again. A lot of people can relate to that story. There is also a lot of fun stuff, surfing, pretty girls, parties – it is kind of like an Entourage meets Lords of Dogtown feel to it. RIS: What are the plans for the movie? How is the interest for distribution in the film coming along? RC: We are submitting to Sundance and all of the major film festivals. We have distribution companies coming to our private screenings. We see a market for this film and see it definitely making it to the big screen with theatrical release and foreign and domestic distribution for DVD. RIS: What is next for Raja and Ari after this movie? What other projects do you have in the pipeline? RC: Ari is writing his next project right now and has a lot of interest from other companies to direct other films. I have a really cool spiritual thriller film that I am currently packaging and I am working in development on 2 to 3 other scripts that are on my desk that I am looking to package for next year. www.theoutsidemovie.com

KJ NOONS

Leading The Evolution of Combat Sports By Taff Davies, Photos By Bo Cross

Many fans who follow the rapidly exploding sport of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) have noticed how quickly the sport is evolving. The first major MMA promotion in the U.S. was UFC 1 held in Denver November 1993, when Brazilian fighter Royce Gracie came out in his Jiu Jitsu uniform to beat a boxer, wrestler, and kickboxer in a row, winning the 8 man tournament. From those humble beginnings 16 years ago, today we have numerous fight promotions across the world, including the UFC, WEC, and Strikeforce in the U.S., with thousands of professional athletes striving to make it to the top. As MMA has evolved, so has the caliber and skill set of the athletes. No longer does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) dominate the sport as it once did. Now, the true combat athlete also needs to be skilled in other disciplines such as Muay Thai, Wrestling and especially Boxing. Perfect examples of these well-versed athletes are MMA Fighters BJ Penn, George St. Pierre, and Anderson Silva, all champions in the UFC. But even rarer than MMA Champions who are skilled in multiple martial arts is the athlete who is able to successfully compete in both Boxing and MMA. One such athlete is Karl James Noons, better known to his family, friends and fans as KJ. Although there has been a lot of news lately about the return to Boxing by well-known MMA fighter Nick Diaz, his upcoming fight will merely be Diaz’s second Boxing match. In comparison, the talented and charismatic Noons has a professional Boxing record of 10-2 with 6 KO’s, a Kickboxing record of 13-1 with 10 KO’s, and a MMA record of 6-1 with 6 KO’s. This ability to fight on multiple fronts is a testament to KJ’s upbringing, training, athleticism, work ethic, and coaching. The son of Karl Noons Sr., who was a professional kickboxer in Hawaii in the 1970’s, KJ was raised in Hawaii until he was 16. He started martial arts training when he was 5, earning his black belt in Kenpo Karate at the age of 11. When he was 10, KJ started Boxing and by 12, he was Kickboxing. When he was 15, he began training Muay Thai and by 17, won the ISKA Super Middleweight championship. After making it to the semi-finals in the 2004 Olympic Boxing trials, KJ turned pro as a boxer, moved to San Diego and in 2005 won the Pride Fighting Championship’s auditions as best striker. In 2006, KJ signed a deal with Elite XC that allowed him to participate in both Boxing and MMA. He then fought Nick Diaz in November 2007 for the Elite XC Lightweight MMA Championship. KJ won the fight by TKO after cutting Diaz so badly in the first round the match had to be stopped. In June 2008, KJ defended his Elite XC title, beating MMA veteran Yves Edwards in 48 seconds of the first round, once again by TKO.

Afterwards, KJ continued his Boxing career, with his thirteenth Boxing match with TKO World Championship Boxing at Pala Casino in Oceanside CA on August 22. After that fight, KJ set another Boxing match in Fall 2009, to be followed by a MMA fight at the end of the year. With such a demanding schedule in multiple sports, KJ truly embodies the spirit of the combat athlete. It’s often said that to be the best, you have to train with the best. Nowhere is this truer than in the fighting arts. To further his quest for future championships in both Boxing and MMA, KJ has enlisted well-known trainer and fellow former Hawaiian Rob Garcia, who also lives in San Diego. Garcia spent the past 8 years as the conditioning coach for Golden Boy Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya until Oscar’s retirement this year. Besides having an extensive competitive Boxing and Jiu-Jitsu background himself, as well as two decades of athletic coaching for numerous world class athletes, Garcia spent the past 8 years working closely alongside famous Boxing coaches Freddie Roach and Floyd Mayweather Sr., learning everything possible along the way from two of the best in the Boxing business. Armed with his weapons of knowledge and experience, Garcia is determined to bring KJ to the top of both the Boxing and MMA worlds. In this quest, the duo have been training at the best gyms they can find, including Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing in Hollywood as well as The Arena in San Diego. The Arena is the well-known Boxing, Jiu Jitsu, MMA, and Muay Thai gym that caters to professional and amateur fighters, with one of the best fight teams in Southern California. With all his skills and the strong support in his corner, KJ Noons is truly able to bridge both Boxing and MMA, becoming a pioneer in the process and setting an example for all the combat athletes who will follow in his footsteps as Boxing becomes more integrated with MMA and vice-versa. Without a doubt, we will see much more of this versatile athlete in the future as he continues to blaze a trail across the fighting world. For more info on KJ Noons, go to http://www.KJNoons.com. For more info on The Arena, go to http://www. TheArenaMMA.com or call 619222-5554 Side Note: KJ Noons (11-2) earned a unanimous decision win over Randy Pogue (8-9-2) on the undercard of Grady Brewer vs. Albert Onolunose, which was held August 22 at the PALA Casino Spa and Resort in Pala, Calif.

INTERVIEW

15 MINUTES WITH THE MAN THAT MAKES LEGENDS By Lee Samartino Photos By Bo Cross

Rob Garcia’s resume speaks for itself - owner of Innovative Sports Therapy, US Olympic Boxing Coach, Oscar De La Hoya’s Strength and Conditioning trainer, now with KJ Noons, previously with Former UFC Champ Ricco Rodriguez, and for the surf industry, Kelly Slater, Sonny Garcia, Bruce and Andy irons…With a resume like this, I was sure that he might know a little bit about training. As a life long fight fan going back to the days of watching Marlin Starling with my Dad at the Hartford Civic Center in Connecticut when I was six years old, I kept thinking to myself “How in the hell am I going to complete a 15 minute interview with a man that I could talk to for weeks straight and still have more questions.” Well, because Rob didn’t have weeks to give me, I had to settle! I had the chance to sit down with Rob Garcia while he was training KJ for the fight at Pala Casino Spa & Resort on August 22nd. RM: Could you tell us a little bit about yourself, your education, & experience? RG: I was born in Los Angeles, raised in Hawaii, and have called San Diego “home” since graduating San Diego State in 1997. I started coaching in 1996. I was the youngest coach ever select for the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team and began taking

on professional athletes immediately after that. My background is in nutritional science and I then moved into exercise kinesiology. From there, I studied under Paul Check for strength and conditioning and sports medicine. Taking my background into the surf industry, I worked with Bruce and Andy Irons, as well as Sonny Garcia, who won a title in 2000 under my training. Immediately following that, I was swooped up by Oscar De La Hoya and have been on his team until his recent retirement after the Pacquiao fight. Currently, I am the head coach for KJ Noons (former MMA world Champion, now professional boxer). We have had two fights together this year and there will be two more before the end of 2009. I boxed as an amateur while I was going to school in San Diego and also studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Rickson Gracie. I trained Ricco Rodriguez when he won the UFC Heavyweight World Championship. RM: How did you get on the De La Hoya Team? RG: After the first Shane Mosley loss, they were looking for a strength and conditioning coach that didn’t rely on traditional weight training. My resume was dropped off and after a series of interviews and competition against 25 applicants, they ended up going with me. I was with Oscar for 8 years and through that time, we had the most cutting edge training available.

RM: Most people step up through the ranks, but you started right at the top. How did that happen?

RG: I have been very lucky like that. I seem to attract the top athletes in the world. In 2007 I trained Kelly Slater for a world title in surfing. He is now a nine-time world champion. I have been blessed in that fashion. RM: At a professional fighting level, what are the training differences between MMA and Boxing? RG: With MMA, it takes on so many aspects of fighting and conditioning that it is a science to slice it up into a pie and train the fighter for exactly what he needs during certain periods of the camp so that he is fully prepared. Martial arts have a really complex set of principles to get a fighter ready. Sometimes he over-trains in one area and not enough in another and it really comes out in the fight. Preparing an MMA fighter for a fight is a little more detailed. With boxing, it is pretty traditional with the running, skipping rope, sparring heavy bag work, and working the mitts. RM: With the growing popularity of MMA, do you integrate the training that you give your MMA fighters with the boxers that you train and Vice-Versa?

RG: Absolutely. The MMA fighters are really trying to step up their game and become more accurate and precise strikers. Boxing is a “sweet science.” MMA fighters are turning to me and other trainers like Freddy Roach because the crowd loves those exciting knockouts and that is what comes from knowing how to box. RM: Do you think it is easier to switch from boxing to MMA, or to integrate the boxing with MMA training? RG: Most fighters in MMA come from a wrestling or Jiu-Jitsu background. There is not a lot that come from boxing and go into MMA. But I think in the future that is something that is going to happen more often. One or two years of wrestling or JiuJitsu and you can get yourself out of trouble, but it takes a lot longer to become proficient at boxing. Some of these kids that are good, it is like golf, they started at 5 or 6 years old. Oscar started at 5 years old, KJ started at 6 or 7 Years old. It is really a diligent, toiling effort to become good. RM: So guys coming out of the gate at 18 years old and aspire to become professional fighters missed the boat? RG: Kind of. It is like trying to become a pro golfer and you didn’t start playing until your junior year in high school. It is possible that you could do it; it’s pretty tough, though. The odds are against you.

RM: How many hours a day go into training professionally for boxing or MMA? RG: Typically, it is a minimum of 4-5 hours a day. In the morning, you will have your cardio, a lot of regular conditioning, movement, plyometrics and things of that nature and then the fighter comes back in the afternoon and works on the skilled aspect of the sport. We will spend an additional 2 to 2 ½ hours performing all of he drills to complete their regimen for the day. RM: Now onto the dirtier side of boxing and MMA…the business. Some fighters will have 20 knockouts and be arguably the best in the game, but never get the title shot. How do you get a fighter to the top? RG: You need to be in the business long enough to know your way around, make the right phone calls, make sure your fighter gets the right fights, develops correctly and is exciting in front of fans. Pick the wrong opponent and it can be a very dull fight no matter how good of a fighter your fighter is. It takes a good matchmaker, a good manager, and obviously a good crew of people training the fighter to get ready for the fight. RM: More importantly, what does it take to get them to stay at the top? RC: That is the big question that all top fighters eventually ask themselves. With all of the success and all of the limelight come all of the drawbacks of the distractions, money, nightlife, and girls. A fighter has to be really disciplined to stay on his game. GSP (Georges St-Pierre) out of all of the MMA guys has shown that he is really disciplined and dedicated to the sport. You won’t catch him out at the nightclubs drinking. He is putting in his time training to defend his belt. He is a good guy for everyone to aspire to. RM: You have boxers getting in the ring making $10 for a fight and range up to the millions, and in MMA, a guy like Kimbo Slice comes in for his first fight at $170,000, but typically the fighters in MMA come in at the $500 to $2,000 range. What are the financial rewards in MMA vs. those found in Boxing, and what dictates those rewards of some fighters versus others? RG: It comes down to the marketability of the fighter. If you have someone like a KJ Noons who is skilled, young, athletic, good looking, good sportsmanship, that is a guy that you can put a multi-million or even a hundred million dollar price tag on. Another fighter from another country that does not speak the language and doesn’t have those attributes may not be able to command that purse. At the end of the day, you need that De La Hoya quality that everyone is looking for: the good looks, the athletics, and the guy that can talk in front of a camera when it is put on him. RM: What is the most important part of the body on a fighter that they should be training? RC: The catch phrase in this day and age is “core conditioning.” The core area that connects the lower body to the upper body – the abs, lower back, hamstrings, all the muscles for the twisting and bending, hip flexors – the primal movement for a fighter allows him to be able to change levels, he needs to be able to drop down, and he needs to be able to rotate his body. If a fighter knows how to properly throw a punch using rotation, then he has all of that dynamic power. A lot of fighters are really well built and conditioned, however, they throw with their shoulder and never achieve the knockout punch that comes with the dynamics of rotation. RM: As for nutrition for fighters in training, what regimen do you keep them on for pre-fight months, the day before, the day of, and post-fight? RC: Proteins are always the major building blocks when you are tearing your muscles down. High quality proteins are essential during all phases of training when the fighter is building up for the fight. With the pre-fight nutrition, you have to assure the fighter is ready for being under the lights for the 45 or 90 minutes. The regimen comprises hydration and carb-loading with a careful balance of simple and complex carbohydrates immediately following weigh-in. The day of the fight, a fighter has to be careful not to eat too much and carry around that extra food that has not been engineered into the muscles. A lot of fighters hold back so much to make weight that they have a tendency to overeat before the fight, which makes them sluggish. About four hours before the fight is the last meal that they will have. Post fight nutrition is important. A lot of fighters do not watch what they eat after the fight. It is not healthy to fluctuate more than 10-12 pounds between fights. RM: How do you prepare a KJ Noons or another champion fighter for a fight? How do you keep them focused and in their game plan? RC: The main thing with these types of fighters is that everyone is gunning for one of the top kids out there. When you have a kid who has built a name for himself quick, everyone wants a chance to beat him. Just knowing that, a fighter like KJ knows that he must be at his best at all times. It all comes down to in here [the gym}. You have to be willing to push yourself in the gym as hard as you can and not take any time off. Once a fighter knows that he put the hard work in, the confidence level rises, and it is a matter of getting him to what I call a “relaxed intensity.” The fighter is relaxed, very intense, and ready to go, yet he is not too high strung where he is off target. I always tell my fighters that when the fight starts, you want to punch accurately. You do not want to overload and punch hard. I keep reassuring the fighters that if they punch precisely, the knockout will come. Coming out and swinging for homeruns is not how it is done in the pros. PRESTON’S TIRE & WHEEL REVOLT IN STYLE ENDORSES THE BEST OF THE BEST by Leslie Krouse Photo’s by Nick Jones

Every once in a while you come across a business that holds itself to a higher standard, once you find it, you should never let it go. Especially today. If you didn’t, or couldn’t take advantage of the cash for clunkers program, (because getting into a payment just isn’t in the cards), it makes sense that fixing up the one that you already own, is the only way to go. Finding a reliable and trustworthy shop to have all the work done, could turn out to be one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. Preston’s Tire & Wheel is such a business. I’ve known Preston and the boys for about 10 years now; and they have taken care of all my vehicles. Whether it was for an oil change, resetting the check engine light, installing a new stereo system. A lift on my jeep, brakes and rotors, an exploded caliper, a broken weld on the mount for my shock (I miss Mexico, that was a fun trip), and of course my tires and wheels, of which I’m thinking about going bigger. I have to admit I’ve had to stray, only out of sheer convenience, but once I got the estimate from whatever shop I had taken it to, I’d call Preston’s for a second opinion, before I had anything done, and of coarse they’d beat the pants off of the competition. Not only did they beat the price, but they also asked the right questions to find out if the repairs suggested are even necessary. Ultimately my vehicle would always end up at Preston’s. I have quite literally pulled my broken down vehicle out of another shop, and towed it to Preston’s. I’m fortunate, as a female, to understand the world of automotive repairs; I worked in the industry for over ten years. This is how I first came in contact with Preston’s, they were my go to guys. The problem with most repair shops is they hire entry-level technicians that quite frankly don’t have the capability, or the education to work on the incredibly complex cars of today. They also seem to pull the old bait and switch, luring you into their shops with incredible deals; which you find out your vehicle doesn’t qualify for, and then they come out with a list of repairs that you don’t necessarily need, so you end up spending 3x as much as if you would of just taken it to the right shop in the first place. It can be very frustrating, confusing, and sometimes-just plain scary. To entrust one of the most important, and expensive necessities, that we have to have in our everyday lives, to someone not qualified to take care of it, well, that just doesn’t make any sense. We depend on our vehicle to get us to work, get you or your kids to school, or even get us out to Vegas when the urge hits us. Our lives literally depend on our vehicles running properly, this is not something you want to put in the hands of just anyone. Preston’s Tire & Wheel have been in business for 21 years and is still running strong. One key factor in their success is Preston himself; his knowledge of the ins and outs of a vehicle is unsurpassed. Preston holds an extremely high standard for the technicians that he hires, “I try to find guys that are like me, but getting this much talent together under one roof, and not kill each other, is pretty amazing” states Preston. They must all be ASE (Automotive Standard of Excellence) Certified, and each must bring their own specific talent to the table. “We have some of the most talented specialists in Southern California” boasts Preston, “Gilberto, bar-none is the best fabricator I’ve ever seen. There is Shane in the stereo and electronics portion of the shop. Before coming to us he was working with West Coast Customs”. “Our technicians know everything from general automotive, to tires and lifts, from specialty vehicles to hot rods, there really isn’t anything they can’t handle”. Preston continues, “We are the only shop in town that has all the latest electronic diagnostic equipment, for any type of car”.

Fast – Accurate – Guaranteed, a motto that Preston’s stands by. Fast, this means that when you bring your car in, it is looked at right away, diagnosed, and fixed. Accurate, means it’s done right the first time, and you’re not paying for anything you don’t need. Guaranteed, this is the most important part of the motto. When you get your vehicle repaired at Preston’s you receive a 1yr 12,000 mile Nation Wide Warranty, parts and labor, and a 3yr 36k on your engine. This means no matter where you are in the country, if you have any troubles with your repairs you can take your vehicle to any service station and it’s covered. Preston’s will pay with their credit card direct to the shop, and nothing comes out of your pocket. By far the best guarantee you will ever receive. Not to mention the piece of mind, that comes along with it. The BBB gives Preston’s Tire & Wheel an A+, and so do I. But, don’t just take my word for it; here are a few testimonials from some of Preston’s customers: “Hands down, without a doubt, Preston’s Tire and Wheel are the best place to bring you vehicle to for all of your needs. Not only are their staff the coolest people on earth, but their knowledge of their products, and advice on not only, what your car or truck needs, but what would look best on it.” James W. “This shop rocks they have done all my cars, my families cars and most of my friends. I know many people that will only get their trucks lifted there, and by judging on how many Prestonbuilt stickers and license plate frames I see a lot of other people must feel the same way. I have watched Preston and Wayne grow a really small business into a thriving megastore. Preston is a great guy and knows his stuff, I have never heard anyone talk bad about him or his shop, Go there!” S. Wayne “I have never been dissatisfied with this performance shop. From lifts, tires, wheels and all the audio equipment we’ve purchased, we have never been displeased with any service or products. They always work to satisfy. If Preston’s Performance were anything less, we would not be spending our money there! Great Performance Shop!!!!” JK

My heart goes out to his family and friends.”

LES PAUL RIP 1915-2009

If you are a fan of modern music, you owe Les Paul an enormous THANK YOU!” Dave Navarro - “A true musical pioneer whose inventions and innovations have influenced every facet, genre, and spectrum of the industry. The world may have lost an icon, but his name and legacy will live on forever. Thanks Les.” Tom DeLonge – “Les Paul helped lead the way for musicians to perform at their best and Woodstock was the platform many legends stood on at the beginning of their journey. We will forever remember them both for that contribution. B.B. King - “Les Paul was truly a ‘one of a kind.’ We owe many of his inventions that made the rock ‘n roll sound of today to him, and he was the founding father of modern music,” The Edge - “Les Paul disproves the cliché that you can only be famous for one thing, a legend of the guitar and a true renaissance man. His legacy as a musician and inventor will live on and his influence on rock and roll will never be forgotten.” Richie Sambora - “A revolutionary in the music business. Les lived a very long life and he got to a lot of his goals, so I’m happy for him in that respect. That guitar is the cornerstone of a lot of great music that has been made in the last 50 years.” John Mayer - “Remembering Les Paul today. If u have ever ‘rocked’ or ‘been rocked’ u can thank Les Paul.” Joan Jett added: “I and everyone at Blackheart Records mourn the passing of our dear friend, Les Paul. Joe Satriani “Les Paul set a standard for musicianship and innovation that remains unsurpassed. He was the original guitar hero, and the kindest of souls. Last October I joined him onstage at the Iridium club in N.Y.C and he was still shredding. He was and still is an inspiration to us all.” “One of the most obvious classic Les Paul Guitar solos is Sweet Child of Mine by Guns N’ Roses - that intro has such a distinctive Les Paul sound to it.” Slash

I

t is amazing to me how many people have never heard of Les Paul. Les Paul single-handedly changed the course of music when he developed his solid body guitar, and discovered a new way to record voices and instruments. He fashioned a solid body guitar from one piece of wood, and attached some electronic devices to amplify the sound. His theory was that the devices and body should remain firm, allowing the strings to vibrate longer and sustain a sound. Gibson debuted its first Les Paul model in 1952, which later became the instrument of choice for rock musicians such as Eric Clapton and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page. Paul also invented the 8-track recording technique known as multi-track recording, and overdubbing, where a melody was recorded on one track, and then the harmony was re-recorded along with the melody on another track. Recognized for his skill as an inventor, Paul was asked to help design and construct the famous Capitol Records studios in Hollywood, California, the first-ever made for high fidelity recordings. The studios are known around the world for their technical and sound quality. Some famous guitarists of every musical genre have picked up a Les Paul at some point in their career, including Billie Joe

THE 19th ANNUAL SAN DIEGO MUSIC AWARDS Thursday, September 10th

The event will take place in the beautiful outdoor setting of Viejas’ Concerts in the Park. This where San Diego’s finest talent get together to see who’s the best of the best.

BUT THE REAL WINNERS ARE THE KIDS

Kathy Jenuine is an authority on the success of the Taylor Guitars in Schools program. “About nine years ago, I convinced the Encinitas School District to start the Taylor Guitars for Schools program in our elementary schools,” she said. “Today they are probably the most popular things on campus that we offer.” The Arts Coordinator for the Encinitas School District, Jenuine was instrumental in, first, persuading the district to approve the program, and subsequently helped individual teachers implement the program on their campus. But her personal experience with the program is highly persuasive, as well. “In fact, my son, when he was enrolled at Capri Elementary school, he was among the very first in a class at our school district to use the Taylor guitars. And, believe me, it completely changed his life. As a parent and an educator, I almost can not tell you how important it turned out to be,” she said. “Today, I am proud to report he is at a university, where he is completely involved in classical music. He is playing and studying it, even. And this is an example, a personal one, of course, but an example of something wonderful I’d say is directly a result of the Taylor Guitars in Schools program.”

Rick Best is a teacher and administrator at Lakeside Middle School in East County. He said the

program has introduced benefits the district and the community normally wouldn’t expect. “Our program is just two years old, but the classes have been full both years,” said Best, who plays and teaches the guitar class. The highlight, especially for a semi-rural area like Lakeside, was how the program has made a cultural contribution to the area. The Guitars for Schools program was developed by Taylor along with the San Diego Music Foundation, which hosts the annual San Diego Music Awards as well as other local music events, such as the North by North Park music conference and festival. The program seeks to introduce the guitar to public elementary-school music curricula in San Diego County, both as a way to augment existing programs and to offset the loss of arts instruction due to budget cuts. Suzie Reed oversees the Guitars for Schools program for Taylor Guitars. Reed said the popularity of the program goes hand-in-hand with the guitar’s familiarity and popularity among young people. Its ubiquity in both pop culture and American history makes it an excellent tool for getting kids interested in music and in the performing arts. Much of the funding necessary to provide so many guitars comes from the San Diego Music Foundation’s annual concert/award show to honor local musicians. The San Diego Music Awards has become one of the hottest tickets in local entertainment, often selling out by the day of the show. Proceeds from those healthy ticket sales are used to purchase some guitars. and Taylor Guitars donates the rest. Reid said that by the end of 2008, more than 1,300 “Baby” Taylors will have been donated to San Diego area schools since the program’s inception in 2000. CD REVIEWS

HEAR THIS Music Editor Leslie Krouse

Editor’s Pick - The Black Crowes – Before The Frost & Until The Freeze Genre – Rock Black Crowes is slated for this fall, when the band returns on September 1 with ‘Before The Frost...’ Fans who purchase the record will then be granted a unique download code, with which they can obtain a second Crowes record, ‘Until The Freeze.’ Both new studio albums were recorded at Levon Helm’s (The Band) studios in Woodstock, New York and produced by Paul Stacey, who previously worked with the Black Crowes on 2006’s ‘The Lost Crowes’ and 2008’s ‘Warpaint.’ The band also performed and recorded the new material in front of a small, select group of fans within the studio. The combined 20 tracks will also be available together on one vinyl version, also slated for a September 1 release date. All but one of the 19 songs are originals, with a cover of Stephen Stills’ “So Many Times.” In a statement on the unique recording set-up, as well as the release method, Black Crowes lead singer Chris Robinson said “I think we fulfilled a musical commitment to continue on the golden road of artistic independence. Approaching 20 years into our careers, we still are ambitious enough to push ourselves to create something unique that we have never done before.” Available Sept. 1st

Arctic Monkeys – Humbug Genre – Alt/Punk/Rock Arctic Monkeys are set to release their long awaited 3rd album, ‘Humbug.’ Arguably the biggest British band around, the influential Sheffield foursome have been holed up in the studio with Queens of the Stone Age main man Josh Homme recording the follow-up to 2007’s brilliant ‘Favorite Worst Nightmare.’ ‘Humbug’ was recorded in the Mojave Desert with Homme and then in LA with producer James Ford, who worked on Alex Turner’s side project ‘The Last Shadow Puppets.’ The record kicks off with ‘My Propeller,’ guided along by hypnotic guitar and bass riffs, as well as ghostly backing vocals. But the song seems to serve as an extended introduction to the album’s first single, ‘Crying Lightning.’ The first couple of listens I gave to ‘Crying Lightning,’ left me a bit unimpressed, but this song is a grower, with the building tempo and tension of the track eventually finding release during the driving and catchy chorus, and ultimately winning me over, as did the nautical-themed video. It’s an obvious selection for a lead single, and despite that often uneasy responsibility, the song still thrives and holds up well after repeat listens. Homme’s haunting vocals kick off “Dangerous Animals,” which is a solid song musically. It’s Arctic Monkeys, you know what you are going to get. Check them out live next month at Soma.

Third Eye Blind - Ursa Major Genre – Rock/Alt Following a six-year break between full lengths, alt rock veterans Third Eye Blind again walk a fine line between aggression and a deft pop sensibility on their latest, ‘Ursa Major.’ Frontman Stephan Jenkins still knows his way around a catchy hook, even those who hated the “do-do-do’s” of 1997’s ‘Semi-Charmed Life’ probably couldn’t get it out of their heads, but he never skimps on throwing down a hard riff or unleashing a scream to get his point across. Jenkins’ lyrics juxtapose poetry with profanity, anger with longing and big world issues with the personal, drug and emotional abuse for example, and his emotive voice still boasts a hip-hop influenced cadence that makes for some fun and interesting wordplay. Opening with the pulsating ‘Can You Take Me,’ Jenkins wails “Let’s start a riot me and you/cuz a riot’s overdue,” and on the world-weary single ‘Don’t Believe A Word’ he laments that “We like thugs when they attack/And we like crime when it’s black on black.” ‘Summer Town’ is an acoustic-flavored delight, “Water Landing” soars with a gospel choir, and lighter moments come with mid-tempo tracks “About to Break,” ”One in Ten” and ‘Why Can’t You Be.’ It’s been a while, but Third Eye Blind hasn’t forgotten how to lay down a strong record..

LEIF(kolt) – Dead is the New Rich Genre – Hip-Hop/Rap/Electro/Punk You can’t judge this CD by its proverbial cover. White boys can rap. How politically un-correct of me, whatever! Leif(kolt) is an unexpected surprise, with a very unique eclectic fusion of hip-hop, rap, electro, and punk, they have really created their own sound. The satirical acclimation of today’s society is rather poignant, and this holds especially true in the title song ‘Dead is the New Rich’, “I see dead people in fancy clothes get strung out and strike a pose, makes me want to be so rich too, so I can spread my ashes over you” words to the wise. Leif(kolt)’s retrospect on life, couldn’t be apparent as it is in ‘Younger Days’, “remember life is just a ride, life is just a fleeting moment, never let your problems drive’ dudes a poet. Here are a couple more of my favorites, ‘Sugar Cubes’, and ‘Bad Blood’. Check them out and buy the CD; I suggest you make it quick, they are offering a Limited Edition Lyric Book, individually hand painted, and it’s pretty cool to read the lyric while listening to the song, you definitely get more out of the experience. www.leifkolt.com

Michael McGraw – The Hillside EP Genre – Indie/Rock I love it when a friend says, “you have to hear my friend, he kicks-ass”, well, Lee you are correct. Michael McGraw has a sound reminiscent of one of my favorite singers Jakob Dylan of the Wallflowers. His passion pours through the lyrics, and the undeniable ability he has of transcending you deep inside the song, painting a picture that you can loose yourself in, and just forget about the world around you. I would say this album is a great way to escape. Michael McGraw lead-vocals/guitar, Mark Lane bass/vocals, Ryan Johnson keys/voc, and Chris Decatur drum/vocals, is the incredible team that creates this complex, yet simple compilation of melodies. There really isn’t a bad song on the album, but a few do stand out. ‘Carousel’ is an upbeat story, about just disappearing from the world, and enjoying life. Then there’s ‘Motorbike’ “drove for miles, one by one, picture you lying there in the sun” I’m in. Album opener ‘Alittle Better Uniform’ and ‘Hillside’ definitely sit at the top of my list. San Diego has a lot of talent; you just have to be willing to listen. The Hillside Ep is available now at www.mtheorymusic.com or iTunes.

Thanks to all of you that sent in CDs! The response has been ridiculously overwhelming. I have so many CD’s to choose from each month and only space enough for 5 or 6 each issue. If your CD didn’t get reviewed yet don’t think that your music sucks. It just means I haven’t gotten to it yet. If you got talent, we’ll showcase it. Send your CD and Bio C/O Leslie Krouse, Revolt In Style Magazine, P.O Box 9771, San Diego, CA 92169 and you just might end up in the next issue of Revolt In Style Magazine. Keep sending in your music and we’ll keep promoting it.

PISSED JEANS Brilliant Talent, Lackluster Sound Photos & Words By Nick Jones

Casbah, San Diego, 16th August 2009. Let’s be honest, music these days is extremely hit and miss, more so than ever given the dissemination that a medium like the Internet provides. Often overly processed, as fake as you like, the vast majority is the artistic equivalent of fast food, and bad fast food at that. Given how diluted any particular genre is with shitness, it’s sometimes hard to latch on to a band that offers genuine sincerity in this quagmire. Fortunately, bands like Pissed Jeans exist and I was lucky enough to catch these guys live at the Casbah whilst touring in support of their latest album, ‘King of Jeans’. The night’s line-up included a couple of local bands - Bumbklaat and Rats Eyes - neither of which I knew anything about going into the gig, but given that I’m not from around here this isn’t all too surprising. Anyway, I don’t have much to say about the former but the latter were definitely of note, playing and sounding like a slightly more fleshed out and modern version of Black Flag - stunted voc als, tough guitar and at a decent rate of pace. Good shit.

Pissed Jeans

Pissed Jeans eventually took the stage in a fairly unassuming manner. The lead singer proceeded to get half naked and they then set about playing a variety of material both old and new. The sound wasn’t fantastic, but I think that half the problem here is that their latest album is so well produced they have a lot to live up to. It could also be that I’d polluted myself with too much whiskey by this point

whilst making a nuisance at the front trying to snap off a few shots in an inebriated manner. Either way, they managed to impart that very essence of pissedoffedness all wrapped up in a sincere and ironic package that the band are renowned for, and I left the Casbah a happy customer. -Nick Rats Eyes Note from the editor: Nick Jones is our good friend and sometime contributor to Revolt In Style Magazine. Born and raised in Manchester England. He is currently living in Germany with his girlfriend and working for the ESA (Eurpean Space Agency). While on vacation, here in the U.S.A. DISTRICT 9

‘TOO CLOSE’ ENCOUNTERS Directed By Neil Blomkamp

If Peter Jackson had succeeded in making a movie version of the video game Halo then we might never have had District 9. So as much as I’d love to see what Jackson’s Halo project might have yielded, I’m thrilled that District 9 emerged from the Halo wreckage.

District 9 wastes no time getting started and then it never slows down. Using a faux documentary style, the film jumps right into the thick of it. We discover that an alien ship arrived 20 years ago and parked itself above Johannesburg. The aliens – human-sized, insect-like creatures – were quickly relegated to refugee camps. As one might expect, they were not welcomed by a human population that derogatorily referred to them as “prawns.” When the government decides to move the million plus aliens from District 9 to District 10, it triggers riots and leads to some unexpected interaction between the species.

District 9 is based on the short film Alive in Joberg by South Africanborn Neill Blomkamp. Jackson had been working with Blomkamp on Halo, and when Halo fizzled they decided to look to some different aliens and expand Blomkamp’s short film. Made on what Hollywood would consider a shoestring budget of $30 (for comparison Terminator Salvation and Transformers 2 came in at $200 million), they have managed to deliver a kick-ass sci-fi actioner that’s also a pointed social and political satire. At Comic-Con last month, Blomkamp said “I really like the idea of science fiction that feels real and I wanted to see it in a way that felt as realistic and grounded as possible. In order to do that I thought of using some sort of real life footage -- whether it’s news footage or hand held documentary filmmakers or security cameras -- as much real stuff that we associate as the real media world and not filmmaking would help ground it. And would help make it feel real. So that was the approach.”

rica and because of South Africa’s sort of racially charged, political background that’s the natural place for the story to go.” District 9” takes a lot of familiar elements – aliens on earth, evil government/corporation conspiracy, social commentary about the immigrant experience, segregation, and xenophobia – but allows us to view them from a fresh perspective. The aliens in this case are not evil or invading but rather lost, displaced, and angry at their plight. The bottom line for them is that they just want to return home. The conspiracy for once doesn’t involve the U.S. or other major super power but instead South Africa, and by placing the story in South Africa there’s an extra political charge to the separate and unequal living conditions forced upon the aliens.

The aliens are not as cute as E.T. (thank goodness!) or as intimidating as Alien or Predator. They are human enough to allow us to empathize with their plight but dangerous enough to create tension in the story.

Blomkamp said, “Ultimately it is kind of a Hollywood thrill ride really more than any sort of political statement but I think that me growing up in South Africa had a huge hand in wanting to see science fiction that I loved as a kid placed in an environment that was slightly unusual and that environment was the one that I grew up in. I grew up there, meanwhile I was watching Alien and 2001, so I thought it would be cool to put that sort of sci-fi, western fiction into South Af-

District 9 delivers on all fronts – it’s an imaginative sci-fi tale, a gritty actioner, a dazzling effects film, a compelling dramatic story, a biting satire, and a flat out exciting piece of pop entertainment. It’s a film that you can get as much or as little out of it as you want. If all you want is grueling action, then you can walk away happy. If you want to find social commentary and criticism, it’s there too but it’s not in your face and it’s not preachy. While Hollywood’s big budget sci-fi films have fallen flat, it’s been two indie, low-budget films – District 9 and the even lower budgeted Moon – that have returned sci-fi to a higher plane and have reminded us that science fiction is best when the human element and the storytelling are not forgotten.

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS NAZI KILLIN’ BUSINESS

(The Weinstein Company) The misspelling comes from the semi-literate character played by Brad Pitt, and the title refers to a group of Jewish soldiers whose mission is to kill Nazis. Quentin Tarantino serves up The Dirty Dozen spaghetti western style and the result is outrageous fun. Christoph Waltz steals the show as a German officer who prides himself on “thinking like a Jew.” RRRRR-Revolutionary, the Revolt Seal of Approval

Taking Woodstock

(Focus Features) Director Ang Lee and writer James Schamus collaborated on Ride with the Devil, Hulk, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Now they team up for a kind of behind the scenes tale of how the generation-defining Woodstock came to be. It looks to be a nostalgic trip celebrating the Age of Aquarius. Emile Hirsh, Liev Schreiber, Eugene Levy, and Paul Dano make appearances. RR-Reserving Judgment

Halloween 2

(Dimension Films) Rob Zombie returns to the saga of Mike Myers for yet another entry in the Halloween franchise. Zombie rebooted the story with some success in 2007 but remaking and rebooting seems far less interesting than what Zombie did with his own material in The Devil’s Rejects. The tagline for his new film says, “Family is forever,” So too apparently is Halloween and Mike Myers. RRR-Routine

THIRST

The ‘Anti-Twilight’ Vampire Film Directed By Park Chanwook

Last month at the Comic-Con panel for the new South Korean vampire film Thirst, the moderator described the work as the “anti-Twilight film.” The audience cheered. That’s because the crowd waiting to hear director Park Chan-Wook talk about his latest film had no interest in wimpy teen vamps mooning over each other. They wanted a vampire tale told Asian extreme style and that’s what they got. Park is best known in the U.S. for his Revenge Trilogy that included Oldboy. Now he serves up a vampire story in which a priest volunteers for an experiment and ends up getting infected blood that turns him into a bloodsucker. “In your average vampire film,” Park says, “a priest would play the role of a vampire hunter that would be helping the victims and helping drive out these creatures but in my film the priest becomes the vampire.” But the disease keeps mutating, and so too does Park’s film. Park cites Emile Zola’s 1867 novel Thérèse Raquin as the major inspiration for the film. But the triangular relationship at the heart of the story – with its betrayals, adultery, and murder – recalls classic film noir. Park confesses to an affection for noir but adds that “apart from film noir, fundamentally this film has romance at its core. And despite being a horror and a romance it also has a lot of comic scenes as well. So in order to actually describe this film you may have to string together a lot of genres but what does it mean for a film to be a mix of any number of genres? It might mean that the film is none of these genres.”

So like the vampire virus, the film resists easy diagnosis. It becomes the thing “that you cannot pin down, that you cannot easily identify or easily define or that doesn’t necessarily give satisfaction to the audience.”

(Miramax) Mike Judge defined the workplace with Office Space and delivered wicked animated anarchy with Beavis and Butthead. Now he returns to the big screen with Extract. Jason Bateman plays the owner of an extract plant who must deal with personal problems and workers who want to take advantage of him. Could this be a workplace comedy from the point of view of the boss? One of the film’s potential taglines states: “ He’s not a lover. He’s not a fighter. He’s a small business owner.” Opens September 4. RRRR- Recommended

Park denies the audience the satisfaction of being able to predict what will happen and instead surprises them with a fresh take on the bloodsucking formula. Park says he was attracted to the genre because he “always thought vampires were poor creatures. They can only drink blood, they can only go about at night, and they have a very limited menu. There are all these restrictions for them to live by so I actually have sympathy for these creatures.” Complicating the story is that the central vampire is a priest and he’s “this most noble character and he sacrifices himself for others. He’s really a saint-like person. You all know that a priest conducts mass every day and during the mass he would be drinking wine and this wine of course represents Christ’s blood so during the mass every day as a priest he would have to contemplate on mystery of Christ’s blood, which is spilled for the redemption of the mankind. Then he becomes a vampire and he is actually drinking blood for his own survival rather than the good of mankind, and he is not drinking wine, which is a symbol for Christ’s blood, he is drinking real human blood. So imagine what kind of suffering he’ll be going through.” So how does a vampire with a conscience lead his life? And if he succumbs to his thirst for human blood, what other temptations will he succumb to next? Thirst uses a vampire virus as the catalyst to set a complex tale in motion, and in the end his film proves to be much more than a vampire tale, it’s a tragicomic story about sin and redemption.

Whiteout

(Warner Brothers) Greg Rucka’s graphic novel set in Antarctica allowed for some inspired artwork depicting snowy landscapes in diverse ways. But the film adaptation by Dominic Sena (who unimpressively directed Gone in Sixty Seconds and Swordfish) looks completely routine with pristine snowcovered scenery turning predictably dark as U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale) tracks a killer. VIRGINity Is So 1992

Your latest flair for the retro look is awfully becoming. I hardly recognized you in so many colors! (Such a refreshing change from your usual favorite of brown.) I shouldn’t have to remind you to run used items through the wash before wearing them - I shouldn’t have to, but I do. Wash your damn clothes, Virgo. And stop turning your oonderpants inside-out to get an extra wear.

Here Comes BRAide

The

LI-

WHOA! Holy commitment, Batman! Your mate just jumped all up on yer shit to extend their undying love and no one is more shocked than you. (Okay, some of us are also pretty shocked - you’re hard to live with.) Just don’t bust any bottles at the wedding and threaten to cut the bitches checking out your lucky spouse - your expertise only extends to beer bottles and champagne bottles are dangerous when smashed against tables. You do not want to wear an eye patch on your honeymoon.

SCORPIOnch a Loaf*

The best thing about eating a cheeseburger for breakfast, Scorpio, is that you won’t need to eat lunch. It’s “thrifty” - not “unhealthy.” And anyone who says otherwise is a moron. And probably someone who won’t die of colon cancer. *This Whorescope was not sponsored by In And Out Burger.

Fools SAGITTARIUSh In

Your new forgiving nature is just precious, but it’s precisely this kind of naivety that’ll catch you herpes from an unworthy Gemini. Bring that old Sag back the one who’d show up at a cheatin’ mutha fuckah’s home with a blow torch. How you gonna cash in on your usual free meals and drinks if everybody thinks you’re boring?

CAPRICORNish Hen

I’ve seen a lot of weird stuff in my day, but I hope I never watch you eat chicken again. Good gawd, Capricorn! Most people are disgusted by the veins but I think they’re your favorite part. All I know is that I’m never flying over the Andes with you and a soccer team. You’ll try feasting on your fellow passengers before they hand out the peanuts! Please start eating chicken alone in your home with the shades pulled. Y’know, the same way you sit holding yourself and weeping.

WhATevER-BEARER Takes

It

I must say, I was shocked when I heard you’ve given up alcohol in an effort to lose weight. Then when you ordered a vodka tonic and explained that wasn’t a “real drink” everything felt okay again. Eye of the tiger, Aquarius! You’ll fit into those shiny spandex pants again in no time! (Wish I could say the same for the rest of your clothes.)

FISHy Like Morning

Sunday

Are you REALLY baking?! And what’s this about doing crosswords together?! Oh Pisces, you’re so cute and cuddly now that someone claims to love you. But seriously - how could they? I mean, think about it. Unless you’ve been able to keep those claws you call feet hidden, but that ain’t easy to do in summer.

BARbIES’ Dreamhouse

Your anatomy is about as useless as a Ken doll’s. I thought you were just a flaccid drunk but even sober you ain’t got nuthin’ below the belt. My advice to you, Aries, is spend a lot of money on anyone you wanna boink. So much money that they’ll never notice your inability to have “normal” sex. That’s how Ken keeps Barbie! (Nevermind that he’s got better hair than you.)

TAURUSt Trap

I hate traveling with you, Taurus. You always want to stop and shop when there are sites to see. I hate it so much that I peed on your toothbrush while you slept in our hotel bed. On a side note, I love it when you travel without me cos that’s when I get souvenirs. Sorry about the toothbrush. I’d promise to never do it again but that’s like you promising to get your teeth fixed.

GEMINI’d Get Checked Out

That

Oxytocin has never been so abused by anyone as you. Instead of letting it work its magic to attach you to a mate you use it to attach yourself to several mates. And that’s how you also attach yourself to herpes. Enjoy!

Dirty CRABtini

I don’t know if I’m in a better mood lately or if you’ve actually worked out the bugs of your personality flaws, but whatever it is, I’m lovin’ the new you, Cancer! Your neediness has dissipated almost completely, and your usual whining about your Curse of The Slow Metabolism is so much easier to tune out lately. As far as I can tell, everyone’s loving you this month. Of course it helps that you keep a fully stocked bar in your home.

MultipLEO Orgasms

The last time I rode in a cab with you we almost got kicked out. I appreciate you only bruising my lip without breaking the skin, but mostly I appreciate your affinity for public sex. I’d have to say my biggest turnoff was the limp of shame home (and your promise that I’d look like Phil Spector fucked me.) Keep up the good work, slut! No one will ever call you “boring” in bed.
