Ah, you must be talking about our girl Emily. Yepper we sure are proud of her. We’re using Emily to model the latest fad in swimwear... Under-cleavage! In fact we’re gonna start showing under-cleavage as much as possible. We should have under-cleavage at all our formal events too. All the kids are doin it. You should try it. Or not. Dude! Relax!

Hey Revolt In Style Once again you have outdone yourselves. 10 on 10 is OFF THE HOOK. Where do you find these amazing models? Are they actually from San Diego? If so, why don’t I ever see women like this on the beach? Again, hats off to you guys. I can’t put your magazine down. I save every single copy. I must have every copy since 1990. There is nothing out there like you guys. You Rock. *ahem...thank you.

Dear Revolt, I know you guys include music reviews/articles in your magazine....I have a band who wants to get a bit more exposure throughout the San Diego area. Think you could help them out? Jennifer Hi Jenn If you go to the CD review section, at the bottom of the page there is a little disclaimer there that explains how the music is chosen each month. Leslie is on top of it. She’s finding talented musicians & getting them in the mag and in front of potential fans. Not to mention the mag is sent out to a bunch of labels each month with A & R people that read her reviews, so who knows...maybe the right person will pick up our mag and discover your friends band. Or they blow, and in that case they will live out their lives in misery and obscurity. Or they could start a magazine.

BACKWASH Dear editor, I truly enjoyed the article by Taylor Robinson titled, “The High Road to China.” There were just a couple of things which left me unclear. With regard to the “stinky tofu” he writes, “I came to find out that this nose hair singing smell was actually food.” I don’t know what a “singing nose hair” is--but if there is such a thing, I have a request. I would like to hear a singing nose hair belt out Frank Sinatra’s, “I Did it My Way” preferably in flat C--just to hear what it would sound like. He also adds, “I brushed my tree three times when I got home but when I woke up I could still taste the putrid odor of the stinky tofu.” Does mister Robinson have a lateral lisp? If so I wouldn’t dane to make fun of him. If however he likes to brush trees he can come over and brush my willows anytime. As a fan I wish I could help. Shame Judith Moore the former editor of the Reader is dead--perhaps she could have been of service. Signed, A fan who read the article, carefully. V. Esq.

REVOLTING! You guys are rediculous! Leave it to you chauvinists to publish an image like the July Ten on 10. Yes the girl is beautiful, but come on...leave a little something to the imagination. Christ!

At Revolt In Style Magazine we strongly discourage typing articles at 5 am with less than 4 hours of sleep and a flight that leaves three hours from time of completion. Unfortunately we rarely follow our own protocols. Kind regards. Taylor Page Robinson Hey guys, met you at the release party at Office in N. Park. Had a blast, when’s the next one? Sammy Sammy, that was a pretty fun night, too bad we had to leave before the fights. I heard my boys at the door had a little fun with the guys from Long Hard Ride. Ha- what up Ken? Can’t take you anywhere! Those guys are BIG! Anyway, next release party is at Wave House in Mission Beach. Doors open at 2. Get there early cause it’ll sell out 4 sure. So here we are again friends... another cool issue to feast your eyeballs on. This Issue is particularly interesting ‘cause we spent a bunch of time fishing in our local talent pool. We got sick of hearing about all these incredible Dj’s from L.A & New York & D.C. - not to knock anyone in particular, but look in your own backyard, people. We’re brimming with talent. We hooked up with Shark Attack, Buddy Akai and Donald Glaude to name a few. Unfortunately we also missed a few. Only so much paper each month and there’s a ton of talented people here. The concert season is at it’s peak, we have a bunch of bands coming around to perform in front of their home town. Flogging Molly, Slightly Stupid, Pepper...all have ties to San Diego.

BLAH BLAH BLAH

PUBLISHERS NOTE

Speaking of shows, flip over this mag and take a gander at the back cover. Rob Hagey has put together another stellar line-up for this year’s Street Scene. Too many to even list here, but rest assured the Revolt Crew will be there to enjoy every day of it. Yeah, it’s Downtown again...where it belongs. Viejas has a few more good shows before the end of their season, so get out there and support your local musician. House of Blues? What can we say...they rock all year round. So before I go crazy on September let’s not forget about August. We still have a few events to get past first. The 3rd install of The Revolt Summer Surf Series 2.0. August 23rd at Crystal Pier in PB. Let’s see who scores the paycheck and fresh surfboard this time. Gavin Sutherland and Eric McHenry have both scored a brand new custom shaped board for their respective first place showings so far. I think we should have a few more riders this event since we’re not competing with the US Open this time. Not to mention there’s a brand new Aviso Carbon Fibre Board for the overall winner of our series. Get down to the event and show your support for some of the best surfers around. Gotta mention the Wavehouse on the 17th. We’re hosting a Sunday and throwing a Issue release party as well as a Ten on 10 & Cover Model search. If you think you have what it takes or know someone who might, come down to the event and bring your bikini. Planet X will be rolling tape for the new segments So what else do we have going on? Toby Ogden went on a little surf trip. Took a group of No Fear groms down to El Salvador, just for shits & giggles. The Murder Capital of the world! Luckily everyone made it back in one piece and brought back some great footage for us to enjoy. Thanks boys! What’s next? Surf Da’ Gulf? The coast of North Korea? Toby’s a freak. But man can that guy knows his way around a camera. So we got a bunch of feedback on the Biodiesel trip. Seems a bunch of you had no idea you could fill up a vehicle on something besides fossil fuels. Really? Each one of us needs to take a minute and evaluate our lifestyles. Can we do anything else to conserve, recycle or make it green. Take a look at the Electric Vehicles in this issue. Maybe 100,000 bucks for a Tessla isn’t gonna happen but we give you some other options as well. Make sure all you surfers know about resurf.org - Recyle all those broken boards. Ok, I’m off on a rant, been pulling 20 hour shifts on the computer for the last few days. Livin’ off of junk food and Upshot. Crikey...that’s some good shit! The things we do to make sure all you dedicated Revolt readers are happy. Hope you appreciate it. We appreciate you. Peace- B That’s a wrap.

TO TAN OR NOT T0 TAN? That Is The Question

There are so many different options in tanning, which one is right for you? Well, we all know what effects the sun can cause to your skin, pre-mature aging, dry skin, sun spots, and possibly cancer. It’s just not a risk that we can take anymore, global warming is very real, and the rays from the sun are getting much harsher, besides who has time to dedicate hours to achieve that perfect tan. There are some pretty incredible options available to us, and no reason not to use them. We all know we look more healthy and even trimmer with a tan. One great option is the Mystic Tan. The Mystic Tan, you stand in a booth and are blasted with tanning solution on front and back from shower jets. A disposable shower cap protects your hair, and I advised you to hold your breath and close your eyes during spraying. It sounds like this procedure would result in uneven color, but wiping the excess solution off with a towel immediately after spraying and using the provided barrier cream to keep certain areas (like elbows, knees, and soles of feet) from getting too dark, leaves you with an even, natural-looking tan. Since all areas are covered with the spray tanning solution, you don’t have to worry about hard-to-reach spots. In just minutes you are dry enough to get dressed. I have personally tried this, and work with a lot of models that swear by it. Airbrush Tanning is another option. Airbrush Tanning a technician uses a hand-held sprayer to apply a fine mist of sunless tanner, varying the amount of tanning agent to match what you’d get from laying in the sun. I’ve even seen technicians enhance the appearance of muscles and abs with airbrush tanning. Airbrush Tanning is not a dye. The primary ingredient in the tanning solution works with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin to produce a natural tan exactly like the sun, but without damaging your skin. The airbrush tanning formula won’t rub off on your clothes, once the tan is set in; this is the difference between Airbrushing over Mystic. Airbrush tanning fades gently, just like a real suntan. Airbrush tanning is safe and FDA approved. Fair skin will tan with Airbrush Tanning. Sunburns can be a thing of the past. Airbrush Tanning provides a golden brown color. There is no orange dis-coloration. Airbrushing is more expensive, but there are some minor differences that could turn into major ones. For instance more brides are turning to the Airbrush Tanning strictly for the fact that it won’t rub off on their white wedding dress. Whichever solution you choose for your tanning needs, isn’t it better to pay a little now to look your best, than to pay the ultimate price in the future? And if you’re like me and live at the beach, sometimes it’s the only way to get a tan. Take a look at Desert Sun Tanning Salon on Garnet or South Coast Tan in Mission Valley. Both have the Mystic Tan systems. South Coast Tan has Airbrush Tanning if that’s the direction you want to go.

ENVIRONMENT

MOTHER EARTH NEWS Creative Ingenuity Meets Eco-Consciousness

Turning Wind Into Electricity?

The Fisker Karma pushes the limits of hybrid design and technology. Developed exclusively for Fisker Automotive by Quantum Technologies, Q-DRIVE plug-in hybrid technology frees drivers from the fuel-burn-refuel cycle.

Philippe Starck’s personal invisible windmill ‘Democratic Ecology’ was introduced at Milan’s Greenergy Design show earlier this year in a vibrant display relaying the intent to enable every man, woman and child on Earth to generate their own power in designer style. The transparent mini-turbine will be available to all in September 2008 and, in typical Starck style, if everyone’s going to have one he’s going to make sure they all look great.

A fully charged Karma burns no fuel whatsoever for the first 50 miles. Drive less than 50 miles a day, and you will need to refill but once a year. Venture further, and a small, clean burning gasoline engine recharges the lithium ion battery pack, powering the electric motor and turning the rear wheels. Q-DRIVE technology will provide the basis for all future Fisker models. Sleek, sexy & eco-chic the Fisker Karma is the first Luxury Plug-in Hybrid. Did we mention it’s screamin’ fast? Not quite as quick as the Tesla Roadster, but it still boasts an impressive 0-60 in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 125mph. Not all power and aesthetics, the Karma has some impressive eco-amenities. According to Fisker the Karma can travel 50 miles on a single charge, without tapping into it’s gas reserve. For longer trips the gas tank switches on and increases the range up to 650 miles. No word on the size of the tank or the actual MPG, but another site speculates that it will get about 40mpg, which is pretty good for a sports car.

...The windmill can generate 20-60% of the energy needed to power a home, at a price point of around 650.00. Not realistically within everyone’s budget, but by combining creativity and elegance with ecology Starck will hopefully encourage more people to take greener steps. And for those who don’t want their conservation pieces to be conversation pieces, a subtler version has been proposed.

ReSurf.org Is On A Mission Their mission is to educate and awaken the collective conscience of the global surf community, to do their share in protecting our oceans and landfills for the present, and most importantly the future by keeping the toxic materials contained in Surfboards and their manufacture out of our landfills. Resurf.org has researched and developed a system to recycle old, broken and discarded surfboards and surfboard manufacturing waste. Resurf.org was organized on a local level, but with a global plan to take the world’s broken surfboards and manufacturing waste and recycle the materials into other practical uses.

Many people united as

calling for food, clean water, an education, for those who need our help most.

Another cool feature is the Karma’s Solar Roof panels. The panels provide energy to the car’s self-contained climate control system that will keep the car cool or warm when the car is parked. When the system is not in use the solar panel contributes to charging the battery. Currently Fisker is accepting pre orders for the 2010 Karma. The first Karmas should be delivered sometime in 2009.

The process starts by collecting the broken pieces and pulverizing them and reducing the material down to dust. The dust is then re-introduced into different industries into the manufacturing process as a re-usable resource. Resurf was founded to facilitate each and every surfer, globally, in reducing their personal environmental foot print. Their principals are to set examples in all facets of recycling. They even have their trucks running on biodiesel to reduce emissions as they carry out their mission. They are following the footsteps of organizations like Surfrider Foundation; just on another path. How Can You Help? Make sure that you and your friends don’t throw broken surfboards in the trash. Drop broken boards off at a surf shop so that it will get recycled by Resurf & If you own or manage a surfshop or a surfboard factory or shaping room, sign up as a Resurf ‘Drop Off’ location. El Salvador No Fear riders practice what they preach when it comes to surf.

Britt Glalland rips the top off at Punta De Mango, however, there were no mangos in sight

top: Las Flores resort nestled in at the bottom of a big muddy cliff

Photos: Toby Ogden When somebody mentions El Salvador, most people get the conception that the place is a dangerous, unstable society with gang members and women eating chicken feet on the sides of roads. In fact that is the truth. El Salvador statistically has the highest murder rates in the world. What better trip for a few NO FEAR surf groms to pack some boards and a couple pairs of board shorts and head down to get some fun waves. To be honest, The accommodations in El Salvador at Las Flores Resort were that of a 4 star hotel with an awesome view of the ocean, AC, wireless internet, great food and service. Just a few steps away from a super fun right-hand point break and a boat on call to explore other fun waves along the coast. X pro surfer Doug Silva took the 3 groms, Britt Galland, Keala Nighe, and Dominic Dipetero down to El Salvador for 5 days to work with each kid and to coach them on different things that they individually needed to work on with their surfing and take them up a few levels. The long right point break was perfect for the groms coaching and progression. After the guys got back from their journey they had time to reflect on a once in a lifetime trip. Here is a little Q & A from the groms. We start with Britt Galland first: So Britt, what was the trip like from the Airport to the Las Flores Surf Club in East El Salvador? The car trip from the airport to the surf club was super long, but I had a whole row of the van to myself and went to sleep. Every time I woke up and looked outside we were in a street filled with poverty, one with a three legged dog, one with old ladies eating chicken feet from a bowl, and one even had people selling inappropriate DVDs next to the kids cartoon section. All of it was super intriguing. What did you think about the surf club property and accommodations? The property was really nice, we had one of the suites of the club and had a perfect view of the point break in front of the hotel. Everyone that worked there was really nice and remembered your name. What was the weather like down there in August? Really hot, humid, and sunny. Not in a bad way, but the only time

18  WWW.REVOLTSD.COM

you would ever throw a shirt on is at dinner to protect you from the human sized insects. How did the 84-degree water affect your wax? I had base coat and tropical wax on my board, the tropical wax completely melted off and I was surfing with just base coat on. Good thing I was using bubble gum wax. How was the food at Las Flores? The food was AMAZING! Not once did I have a bad dish, they give you a menu with about 7 things for you to choose from, all of them are excellent What kind of surf were you expecting to score in El Salvador? Well, from the pictures we saw of the pics we were thinking we were hoping for some big barrels and more punchy of surf

What kind of surf did you actually get? Well even though we didn’t get it barreling and punchy we still got some fun rippable waves, its a really good wave to work on a lot of different things How much do the tides affect the quality of the surf? Basically the wave is only good on low tide, usually the tide comes up in the afternoon with the wind and the waves go to crap but that’s our time to eat, sleep, and blast the trance music in our room. How many different spots did you guys surf during your stay? Two, Las Flores the point straight out and Punta Mango, which was a right point break about 15 min. Boat ride up the different points. Were the spots sand bottom or rock and reef? The point straight out was more of a sand bottom and Punta Mango was more cobble stone reef

What was the best session of the trip? Probably the last two days of the trip when the swell came in. We got some fun shoulder high waves that went on for a really long time Anyone get sick or injured on the trip? Ya, Keala tried to do a super man and his tail hit him in the nose and broke it, there was blood EVERYWHERE in the water and on Doms towel, we were scared he was gonna have to go home but he man’d up. What did your coach, Doug Silva have you working on during your sessions? Each person had there own thing to work on, mine was to keep my right arm in front of me and to keep my left leg more bent, we all benefited from him being there with us on the trip. How was Doug’s surfing? Definitely for sure on of my favorite surfers of all time, he’s really fast and powerful, I hope I can surf like him one day What did you guys do when you weren’t surfing? I brought my ipod speakers with me on the trip and put my techno/trance play list on loop and 24/7 we had trance, I think we may have turned it off twice the whole trip, once to switch trance play lists and another when we were leaving the surf club. Who surfed the most out of your crew? Probably Dom Grom. We was frothing constantly and was always ripping Are there many towns nearby? Any night life? We were on the edge of one sketch town and there was a couple we saw on our way to the airport, the guy that drove us said that they had a good trance club but I was over that. ha-ha What would it be like to live down there? Its a really nice place to visit and get away, but at the end I was ready to go home, its a nice place and all but its kinda sketchy with the town and all Are there a lot of local surfers in the Eastern part of El Salvador? There was a couple that we saw, they actually surfed really good, but some have a back paddling problem, but we weren’t bothered by it, this was there break and we would probably do the same at our own breaks

Next up we heard from Keala Nighe : Can you get by with just boardies and tee shirts down there? For sure! That’s all I used the entire trip What was the weather like down there in August? Extremely hot sunny days. Then at night it would rain with occasional thunder and lightning How was the food at Las Flores? Best steak I had in my life How much do the tides affect the quality of the surf? Low tide is a perfect 3-4ft point break. On high tide its a 1-2ft beach break What was the best session of the trip? Last day getting back paddled the entire session that was pretty fun Anyone get sick or injured on the trip? I broke my nose the second day of the trip. Luckily it wasn’t too bad and it only kept me out of the water for the remainder of that day. Some people think El Salvador is unstable and not so safe for tourism? Did you guys see any signs of that? I think its the complete opposite. There are guys holding shot guns at every store, resort etc. What did your coach, Doug Silva have you working on during your sessions? Connection and flow How was Doug’s surfing? 3 words. Speed, Power, Flow Who surfed the most out of your crew? I think little Britt got the most surfing time in on our trip. He was always the first one up in the morning. Amped up to go surf. Are there many towns nearby? Any night life? We never really went anywhere. We just stayed at the resort. But the night life was pretty fun we had Techno going in our room all night. What would it be like to live down there? It would be pretty difficult. I don’t think I could live in that heat without A/C. Are there a lot of local surfers in the Eastern part of El Salvador? Lots of local surfers and they are all pretty aggressive. So, its important to get out there when the crowd is small.

And last but not least Dominic Dipetero shared some thoughts too: What was the trip like from the Airport to the Las Flores Surf Club in East El Salvador? When we arrived at the airport there was a mob of locals waiting for family members and they were staring at us gringos giving us a weird vibe. The shuttle ride was long and there was some cool scenery. What did you think about the surf club property and accommodations? The shuttle ride was long and there was some cool scenery but when we arrived at Las Flores I was blown away by how spectacular the place was.

On the way to Punta De Mango, only way to get there is by boat

How did the 84-degree water affect your wax? I started out using tropical but it started melting off so by the end of the trip I was using straight base coat. What was the best session of the trip? Morning of our last day. Low tide, with long walled up rights. Some people think El Salvador is unstable and not so safe for tourism? Did you guys see any signs of that? Yeah we saw people living in the jungle that would definitely rob you if they got a chance, Toby almost got jacked. What did your coach, Doug Silva have you working on during your sessions? Doug made me surf with more energy and told me to try to injure the wave. What did you guys do when you weren’t surfing? Watching Harold and Kumar, grinding, listening to trance, or hanging out by the pool.

Dom got pissed on a couple waves, Doug said it would help his surfing. We think he’s right

Who surfed the most out of your crew? Toby

What would it be like to live down there? You would score good waves but you would have to work really hard to make a living.

Are there a lot of local surfers in the Eastern part of El Salvador? Yes. Las Flores had its share of mosquitoes.

On the way Keala did 300 Air Reverses on this trip, it was pretty sick when he put it on rail too

Besides the success of the coaching and advancing our surfing, at The end of our trip, we all had a better understanding about El Salvador. Even though their is the high crime rates and dangerous gangs and such, our perception of the country was just the opposite with friendly people, beautiful lush green scenery and fun waves.

Photos: Justin Postin & Brian Terhorst Another classic summer day for the second of four events on the Revolt Summer Surf Series. There was a small south swell pushing thru that held waist to chest high waves the whole day. Muggy overcast conditions made for a long day. The groms definitely had the advantage at the beginning of the day. As the swell built thru the day the riders were handed a few solid head high sets here and there. DJ Shoeneys was entertaining the beach with some sweet sounds and eventually Billy O and Matt Krueger showed up and played a set or two to mix it up a bit. The Grinch Demo was a much needed break in the action and was enjoyed by everyone lucky enough to see it. The SRH boys were definitely in the zone and the fun waves were just what they were looking for. The sets grew consistently thru the afternoon and delivered fun chest high waves for the Pro-Am Finals. Gavin Sutherland, Eric McHenry, Nate Anderson and Jeremy Fulmer were surfing like madmen trying for their chance at the cash and a new custom board. In the end the defending champ Gavin took home the dough and a new stick. The next event is August 23rd at Crystal Pier- 7am so don’t miss out. Tanner Gudauskas gets lifted after his victory in the Jr Mens Final

Nathaniel shows ‘em all how it’s done

Nathaniel Curran Wins the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing Nathaniel Curran claims the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing presented by O’Neill and the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings lead. The win marks Curran’s first major event victory and his first time atop the ASP WQS ratings. He grabbed an early lead in the two-man final and held on to defeat Frenchman Tim Boal, 11.66-10.70, in sparse two-to-three-foot surf alongside the Huntington Beach pier. “The final was kind of a bummer, the waves didn’t come in,” Curran said. “I kind of knew that in the beginning, that the tide was coming up, getting really high, and I wanted a quick start.” The victory earned Curran $15,000 and moved him from No. 4 in the World Qualifying Series standings to No. 1. By claiming the biggest win of his career and jumping to No. 1 on the current ASP WQS ratings, Curran increases his chances of qualifying for the tour. The top WQS surfers at year’s end earn berths onto the elite World Championship Tour, of which Curran’s brother, Timmy, was a longtime member. Curran hopes the result will finally separate himself from his brother’s accomplishments. “Everyone thinks I’m Timmy, everyone calls me Timmy,” Curran said. “That’s why I cut my hair.” This year’s Honda Men’s U.S. Open Presented by O’Neill featured 192 competitors in the main event, 96 in the trials and 30 more on the alternate list. Forty eight of the top 50 competitors on the WQS and 90 of the top 100 are entered. In addition to “heavy-hitting” World Tour standouts Chris Ward, Tim Reyes, Cory Lopez and Taylor Knox, crowd favorites include highly rated WQS stars Patrick Gudauskas, Sunny Garcia, Adriano de Souza, Brett Simpson and Nathan Yeomans.

X-Pectations of the X Games: Written by Venus Vandevender

After a few days at the X Games in Los Angeles interviewing athletes in respect to the latest triumph or unfortunate loss, I had what I believed to be a solid story. A tale of extreme athletes performing fearless aerobatics for the world, shall be my angle. All that is left to do is attend the X Games Wrap Party at The Avalon in Hollywood, and wrap up my own adventure in efforts to satisfy my article. I arrive at my destination realizing Rolling Stone Magazine’s sponsoring the event is creating even more hype for this evening than that of the past week. Perhaps it’s because Mike Ness (Social Distortion) & his band are the evening’s musical delicacy. Yet my attention is drawn to Moto X riders Miles Richman, Jimmy McGuire, & Justin Cantrell airborne 30-40 feet in the middle of Argyle Street. Their task is to entertain the guests arriving with a montage of motorcycle acrobatics. Flips, Superman’s, & sideward onslaughts amuse those lucky enough to witness what I consider to be Moto X’s version of “Humans in Flight.” I stand back for a moment observing, recognizable actors, actresses, and musicians outside lining the sidewalks, with the same hope and expectation as everyday people. The general public and television & film personalities are sharing an organically rare moment. The mass of on-lookers famous or not, absorb the adrenaline fueled bond from 30 feet below. All eyes to the sky, all in unity.

First, hearts race, anticipating the rider’s approach to the ramp, chills on the back of our necks arrive during lift off, followed by anxiety as the rider displays his ability to defile the laws of gravity. Shock sets in once the trickster begins his decline and we all regain composure when the rider lands safely. At this point it doesn’t matter who, or what graces the red carpet my focus is on the competitors who risk life & limb. This is what we all came to see. This is the X-Games. X-treme tricks, X-treme challenges, and X-tremely technical mind-blowing evolution. Stunts that emotionally draw us in, make us think, and make us feel good for watching; all in Unity. Here I stand prepared to cover the athletes trials and errors, wins, losses, records, stats, medals, etc for my readers when chances are you know the highlights already. Why report on the past? Why not run with the vibe? The question dawns on me, how do the X-Games athletes’ view us? We expect them to go big, we want them to land the hardest trick upside down, backwards, or side ways. We expect technique and style with grace and bigger & better maneuvers. We are danger-seeking fiends who crave calculated routines. Devoted since we can remember. We are the ones who see your tricks and then go out on our own to perfect it. X Games is our chance to get to know you but in return our battered and bruised heroes of weightless flight, how do you perceive us? Listening to other reporters and interviews solidified my current train of thought behind what we the people expect from the athletes of the X Games. I thought I’d ask them personally what they’d like in return. The first Athlete I talked with was Morgan Wade. A BMX rider who won the silver medal in X-Games 2006 in the park & conquered Singapore’s 2007 Bike Jam with a first place finish. Morgan’s humble attitude and willingness to risk losing a contest if it means that his attempt to win is the biggest and hardest trick to land sums up his life long love for BMX. “Morgan?” I ask, “ You know your fan base rather well and you know what they expect from you when you ride. What do you get from us (the Fan) in return?”

Morgan:” I think X – Games is definitely becoming more of a household sport. A lot of kids are getting involved in BMX and Skating rather than football or baseball because more and more towns have skate parks and stuff like that. It’s becoming more accepted and more of the norm, which makes it so guys like us can have a blast and make a living doing what we love, and its just awesome. Most of my friends and most of the guys out there are just psyched to see each other ride well. What it boils down to is any of us can do it. We all have the talent, we love watching each other ride well and we like seeing good bike riding. We like doing good bike riding but at the same time its cool to see new tricks and see what other guys are dreaming up.” Morgan’s attitude seem to be the consensus of most the athletes. I spoke briefly with Gary Young, a San Diego local whose reputation of impressive transfers and tabletops places him among the riders who seek good clean, solid, big air runs rather than technical combos. Although technique is in Gary’s tool bag as well, his viewpoint is modest. “It’s definitely awesome to perform for people who are in the know,” Gary said standing there on the red carpet in a T-shirt and jeans. “People who can respect what’s going on and have good knowledge of what’s going on in the industry. It’s just rad to see dudes that actually care. It gets me psyched to ride in contests but the crazy part about it is I’d be doing this anyway. The fact that there is so much of a support system is awesome. But this is what I’d be doing at my local skate park anyway.” It’s comforting to know what the Athletes imagine for us is what we require from them. A sense of pride in your craft, a willingness to share the excitement, and an addiction only fulfilled by taking life to the X-treme. Do what you love, do it with conviction, but maybe most importantly just be thankful for what you have and use it to your best advantage. The next time you land your biggest trick or conquer a personal goal inspire those who observe to yearn for the best. The rest is up to you, as should be X-pected.

CRITICAL VELOCITY Words and Images by Sean Cassidy

In San Diego, and many cities around the world, there is a new underground. A subculture if you will. Group bike rides. One of the best group bike rides to experience is ‘Critical Mass’. Ours, like many others, is on the last Friday of each month. It’s at Balboa Park, at the fountain nearby the Rueben H. Fleet center.

Besides having tons of fun displacing auto-based traffic, the general message being put out is all about cycling awareness. With numbers usually topping over a thousand riders, the tables are turned on SUV dominance for the evening. It’s easy to meet new friends, have a great time and even enjoy a bile ride. Most people will start showing up at the fountain at around 7pm, but the ride tends to really kick off at around 8. Plan on a couple of hours of riding with a few stops here and there.

Don’t be passive, get massive! For more information, check out criticalmass.org

The New Breed of MMA Fighters Just like sports before it, MMA is ever evolving. The days of being a one discipline fighter are long gone. Now there is a new breed of MMA fighter led by the examples of George St.Pierre, Anderson Silva, and B.J. Penn. These are all fighters who are good at everything; wrestling, jiu-jitsu, boxing, muay-thai, etc. Physical conditioning and diet have also become critical parts of a fighters regime. Now fighters are no longer expected to simply last three five minute rounds, but to perform in all three as if it was the first. Meet Joe “The Hybrid” Duarte, he is a shining example of the new breed of MMA fighters. Joe has a perfect record of 4-0 and is looking for his next fight in the lightweight division (155lb). We stopped by San Diego’s Throwdown Elite Gym to ask Joe a few questions. What activities do you like to do in your down time? I like to travel, go to the beach, BBQ, and spend time with my girl. What type of music do you like? Reggae, but my all time favorite bands are CCR (Credence Clearwater Revival), AC/DC, and Johnny Cash. What other MMA fighters or athletes do you look up to? Anderson Silva! But GSP is a close second.... their work ethic and heart is unbelievable. How did you get your start in MMA? I started MMA because I was going through a real rough time in my life. I moved to California and I met Pat Speight, Casey Ryan, and Charlie Kohler through my friend Milan from the San Diego Fight Club. It was there with my wrestling, muay thai, and boxing background that I learned to become a complete fighter. They taught me how to put it all together and Eric Del Fierro is polishing it up everyday since then. I owe everything to those guys. Where did you grow up? Hmmm...where do I start. I grew up on Guam (13N/144E). A place where the clock moves slow, the ocean is warm, and everyone’s late. I had a rough upbringing, but it has made me who I am. As child, I lived everyday as if I were an adult... never having a curfew and sometimes it would be days before I saw my parents. When my parents got divorced I moved in with my friends. It was then that I learned to live on my own and learn how life’s gonna be. My Aunt and my Grandma always looked out for my best interests and helped me my entire life. My mom didn’t have much, but she always gave me her last dollar. I sold almost everything I owned and paid off debt, then I moved to the states in 02’ on a one way plane ride, $500 in my pocket, and a good luck pat on the back. I told myself I was going to make it or be on the streets. Well I made it and I’m living proof that if a boy (because I was a boy when I made the decision to leave home) can make it being over 3000 miles away from home and become a professional athlete....you can too! A lot of inspiration comes from people that have touched my life in one way or another. I have just been blessed to have met some of the best people on earth. What other things influence you in life? This one is simple, GOD, Family, Friends, and El Gayo (Geraldo) my 12 year old prodigy. What is your goal in your career and in life? I’m an island boy... I don’t ask for much. I just want to be able to have plenty of bread to break with family and friends that have been there for me through out my life! Describe your training regimen? Who do you train with? Wow...I train with a lot of the top fighters that live in California. I pretty much do whatever Eric wants me to do. Its not always fun and I dread it sometimes but its what I have to do to remain a champion. INK SPOT

ARTIST PROFILE NAME: GARY HOAG MEDIUM: TATTOO WHERE: ACE TATTOO The Ace Tattoo name has had its legendary roots in downtown San Diego since 1947. Renowned tattoo artists by the likes of Ed Hardy and also Mike Malone of Sailor Jerry’s / China Sea in Oahu, Hawaii have both been associated with the moniker. Nearly 20 years ago Gary Hoag purchased the business that is a local landmark and practically in the water on Newport Street in Ocean Beach. This is a mellow cat that began honing his inking skills at the youthful age of 12 and has always been involved with its evolution. It certainly didn’t hurt to brush shoulders and be associated alongside the distinguished aforementioned either. Today Gary is primarily recognized as one of the most accomplished cover-up artists in town. He finds it rewarding to assist people who are unsatisfied with old work and are ready for a fresh change. It is truly a transformation process. Hoag has said that, “It took many years to ideally tackle the craft” and it has obviously paid off as consistent referrals attest to the quality of the work and attention to his customers needs. The Ace crew consists of Steve, Forest, Mark Dominick and Gary. It seems that the future holds the continuation of the Hoag name and Ace Tattoo in Ocean Beach as Gary’s 18 year old son Dominick just recently began professionally inking. Gary is constantly amazed by his son’s talent. It is promising to have the history continue and thrive with Ace Tattoo from such deeply rooted San Diego nam

GETTING A TATTOO

FEATURE

THE 5 W’s OF

Who? What? When? Where? Why? What you absolutely need to know before you ink By Carina Castelli

When Steve-O from Jackass got a bigger than life-size tattoo of his own face on his back, we all laughed at him, or with him I guess. However, unless you get paid a ridiculous amount of money to have your friends shock your balls with a taser gun*, following Steve-O’s example of getting stupid, spontaneous tattoos probably isn’t what you have in mind for permanent body art.

Carina: Why is that? Hurts too much? Leo: No, because it would fade very fast and end up looking like shit. You’d be unhappy and it would make me look bad, like I didn’t know what I was doing. The palms of your hands and the bottoms of your feet are not good places for tattoos because the skin wears away too fast and so does the tattoo.

(*Author side note: What is it with guys and their orifices anyway? Why do heterosexual men find humor in other questionably heterosexual men torturing their own and each other’s genitalia? Well, that’s an entirely different article and far more disturbing.)

Carina: Alright, but what if I don’t find a specific artist, but just go up and down Garnet Avenue looking at the dozens of different tattoo shops. How do I choose? Is there really a difference?

So how do you choose what tattoo to get? Where on your body to get it? Who will do it? When is the right time, and why? I recently sat down with Leo Cadenazzi of Core Tattoo in Pacific Beach to find the answers to these questions. Why Leo? He’s one of San Diego’s most renowned artists, he is co-owner of one of the nicest, cleanest shops I’ve ever seen, and he’s a hot Italian guy with a Brazilian accent. I figured, what the fuck, why not? It’s a hell of a lot better than the old Harley Davidson dude named “Dirty Harry” who gave me my first tattoo when I was 18. Carina: So, if I walked into your shop off the street and asked for a Tasmanian Devil tattooed on the bottom of my foot, what would you say? Leo: I’d have a lot to say about that. First, I’d ask you why a Tasmanian Devil. Does it mean some thing to you? Does it represent your life, your family, or your lifestyle in some way? Before even entering a tattoo shop, a person should research their idea, bring in samples of style, color, pictures, drawings, anything that will help convey to the artist what you have in your mind. Second, I’d tell you that I wasn’t going to tattoo the bottom of your foot.

42  WWW.REVOLTSD.COM

Leo: Word of mouth, people in the community, and online. You should always look through an artist’s portfolio and make sure their style matches what you are looking for. Make sure he or she has enough experience to create the tattoo you want and that they know the meaning or history behind the design. For example, I specialize in Japanese style of tattooing, but Chris VonBong, another artist at Core, specializes in Old School and Lowbrow Hotrod Art that will be evident by looking at our portfolios. You should also make sure an artist is capable of doing the size tattoo you want: just because someone can do quarter-size tattoo doesn’t qualify them to do a full sleeve. Bottom line: ask questions, a lot of questions. You’re going to have this tattoo forever, so don’t be afraid to make sure you’re getting what you want.

Carina: So what do you tell someone who says they want a tattoo, but aren’t sure what to get? Leo: A knowledgeable artist can help you pick something by talking to you about your ideas. You could also start with an artist whose work you like, and go through their portfolio for ideas. Carina: Okay, but how do I pick an artist?

Leo: Yeah, of course there’s a difference because there are very different artists at each one. If you’re just looking for a simple little butterfly tattoo the size of a quarter that will take 30 minutes, almost anyone can do that. But if you’re really researching a big, custom piece where the artist is creating it for you, it makes a big difference where you go. Regardless, the shop should, first and foremost, be clean. First impressions are everything; if the shop looks dirty and unclean, there is a good chance that the quality of work will resemble the shop. Also, look for a shop that has been around a while or at least has a good reputation in the community and is known to employ skilled artists. Again, they should be competent in the style you’re looking for – if you want a Japanese style tattoo, don’t go to a shop that specializes in Old School. Carina: When I was getting one of my tattoos, I felt really bad for the girl next to me getting a tattoo from this guy who was a real asshole. He treated her like crap and was pretty disrespectful. What if the “perfect artist” and you just don’t get along? Leo: It’s up to you, and what you are comfortable with. You don’t have to marry your artist, but you should be on the same page as

him or her and be able to communicate clearly with them. Especially if you’re getting a big piece that may take several sessions, you could be spending anywhere from 4-8 hours at a time with that person and will have to go back a few times in order to finish the tattoo. If you don’t feel comfortable going into it, you’re not likely to want to go back. It is not ideal to have to have another artist finish a tattoo someone else started because they will, of course, tattoo differently. Carina: Any suggestions for those of us that get drunk at the Silver Fox next door to you, and think a spontaneous tattoo is a great idea? Leo: Come in and talk to us, take a card, go home and sober up and we will take care of you when you are in less of an inebriated state.

THE PROPER CARE AND FEEDING OF A TATTOO A tattoo isn’t completed until it is fully healed, which can take about two weeks. This takes active participation on your part. Core Tattoo in Pacific Beach provided the following aftercare instructions: Remove the bandage after one hour, two maximum. All wounds need to breathe if in order to heal properly. Wash the tattoo using your fingertips or hands only – no scrubbing! Use a mild antibacterial soap and warm water. Take care to remove all traces of blood, as this will cause scabbing. Do not scrub the tattoo with a washcloth during the two-week healing period. Always gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean soft cloth or let it air dry. Apply a thin coat of ointment to the tattoo: Aquaphor, A&D Ointment and Tattoo Goo are all good choices. (Apply just enough to make it shine, a little goes a long way.) Work it into the skin really well. Dab off all the excess with a paper towel. You should barely see it; this is just enough to keep the tattoo moist and to keep it from scabbing. Your body heat will liquefy the ointment and it may become glossy looking or runny. This means there’s too much on there. Dab more off. Too much ointment will only suffocate the tattoo and liquefy any scabs that may have formed causing the ink to fall out and look blotchy. There is no need to re-bandage the tattoo. Aquaphor, A&D Ointment, Tattoo Goo and Vitamin E Oil are all very good for your new tattoo. Ointment can be applied whenever the tattoo is feeling stiff or dry but beware of over-moisturizing. Your body will absorb what it needs where it needs it. Apply ointment twice a day for 2-3 days then switch to a regular moisturizer like Aveeno, Eucerin, Keri, Lubriderm, Curel, Jergens, or Vaseline Intensive care. Apply moisturizer twice a day for the remainder of two weeks. DO NOT use lotions that contain color, fragrance, or sparkles until the healing is complete. (Usually anywhere from ten days to two weeks; Possibly longer for slower healers.)

Your skin will form a protective layer no matter what you do. If you do not keep it moist enough, or if it is too moist(it’s a personal balance and different for each individual), it will form a thick, hard scab that may crack when you move. When you form this kind of a scab the ink sits within it and slowly heals into the skin. When the tattoo is kept moist it doesn’t have a chance to form a scab but does form a thin membrane to protect the tattoo while it heals. This layer peels off similar to the way a sunburn does (do not peel your tattoo, you will pull the ink out!) and it is normal to see small flakes of colored skin falling off during this stage of healing. You must keep your tattoo clean, however, long showers or baths must be avoided for 2 weeks. Prolonged soaking can and will loosen scabs if any have formed, or will soak through the soft tissue and cause your ink to flow down the drain. This includes soaking in the ocean, pool, hot tub, and saunas. Short showers are best, under ten minutes if possible.

Refrain from scratching or picking at the tattoo. Scrubbing with a washcloth can be very harsh on a tattoo and will cause your colors to fade. It is normal for the tattoo to become very itchy during the healing time. To relieve this, spray the tattoo with rubbing alcohol or slap it with your hand (this will sting it and take away the itch). The sun is BAD for your tattoo, even if you’ve had it for a long time. Sunburn on a new tattoo can cause it to dry out or to form a horrendous scab, which will fade the tattoo before it is even healed. It will also increase the healing time significantly and promotes scarring. Wait until it is fully healed to go back in the sun or a tanning bed and make sure you put on a high quality SUNBLOCK. (Do not apply sunblock while the tattoo is healing.) The tattoo is under your skin, and your tan will form above it. If you get too dark, some colors (white, yellow, pink, and orange) may not show up as brightly as they could. Over time, excessive exposure to sunlight will cause your tattoo to fade no matter what colors are used. Remember that hands and feet reproduce skin cells much faster than other parts of the body. A tattoo in these areas will sometimes take an extra two weeks to heal. During this time refrain from washing dishes, wearing gloves, or wearing socks and shoes (sandals must not rub the tattoo). Any friction of this type WILL wear away the tattoo within a very short period of time. Tattoos in these areas are almost never guaranteed.

DJ GET INSIDE THE MINDS OF SAN DIEGO’S HOTTEST DJ’S PHOTO: BO CROSS

SHARK ATTACK Wow, what a year can do!!! Shark Attack has pretty much dominated San Diego’s DJ circuit this last year. They were the first DJ/Producers duo to headline this year’s Revolt In Style stage at 91XFest. . They have also been nominated for the 944/Platinum awards, and the SDMA’s. Currently they will be playing SOCO music fest Aug 23rd, with a huge line up of international talent. They’ve performed private industry parties at Coachella, and have toured all around California, Las Vegas, Arizona, and Mexico. It seems as if no one can really stop these guys momentum, and why would you? These 2 kids are producing their own music, put on one hell of a live show, make guys jealous, and make girls love them… I have known Patrick Heaney and Mike Delgado for about 2 yrs now, and let me tell you, they are two of the funniest kids I know. When you first meet these two characters you are kind of in shock, They are both covered in tattoo’s and make stupid jokes all day long, that usually only they think are funny. But once you get them in their office, it’s all business… Guys put the girls and drinks down, and answer a few of Miss Toats questions… Ok guys so I grew up in San Diego and I know how hard it is to break out of there. You guys are gaining speed with interviews and press photos and the gigs are getting bigger....how’d you get to this point? PH: Well, first we “scammed” everyone into thinking that we were cool...then we limited our shows to only a few a month switching back and forth from the “hipster” crowd to the “downtown” crowd. We also try to make our DJ sets more like live remixes skipping to and fro to different cue points throughout the song. You know quality not quantity...Right? Am I right?

46  WWW.REVOLTSD.COM

MD: By paying a little more attention to detail with our sets, I think it’s really helped us to stand out. Throw some style in your mix. Add some spice to your life. So at what point will you guys know that you’ve made it? Or what is your big goal (to play in a certain country/city/club/venue/with a certain artist)? MD: I feel like we’ve been extremely lucky so far, and have had a lot of great shows and shared the stage with a lot of big names. We’re ready to start touring and take it international. PH: We’ve been talking with a few labels to put out our first full length, and that’s exciting, but I wouldn’t say that’s making it...I guess when we are on the Disney Channel rubbing elbows with Hannah Montana the Cheetah Girls I guess that’s when we know we’ve made it. Or maybe when Mike apologizes to me, on VH1’s behind the scene, because he paralyzed me in a drunken car wreck, I guess that could be another sign of really making it big time. Or just being big timer with the cash money millionaires. Right? Am I right? Do you guys have groupies? Besides that one teeth-on-the-balls incident, what is the craziest thing a groupie has said/done to you? PH: Our groupies consist of mostly older jock dudes and young Mexican guys....the girls kind of see through the whole acting cool thing and straight to our fat bodies...so really we don’t get a lot of action on that area. I mean we’ve seen some breasts in our day but I think that’s just from watching girls gone wild on beta in my parent’s basement with Foreman, Kelso and Hyde.

MD: A gentleman did a remix of our song “dead last” on a game boy...but that’s not really a groupie thing to do... You guys are stirring up quite a bad boy DJ reputation (I know that sounds cheesy) but I guess you’ve been banned from ever playing the Ivy, Belo. Normally, it’s perceived as a negative thing, have you found it to work to your advantage?

and all sorts of different noises we come up with just so we can play everything live and put on a really fun show. Right? Am I right?

PH: I guess we just have a little too much fun when we play, a lot of the time it does work to our advantage because there is always someone in the crowed who enjoys it and will come to the next show. We didn’t know that we couldn’t climb across rafters and hang from the ceiling. Mike tried to do the whole Chris Angel walk on water in the pool at the ivy but just fell right in. We still enjoy and hold nothing against a place that doesn’t want to have us back...I mean no one likes drunk annoying guys right? Am I right?

If you had to give up music/DJ’ing or sex for one month, which would it be and why?

MD: If no one’s talking about us, that means we’ve blended in and this has all been a waste of time. The last thing we want is to be two more average DJs playing the same dive bars over and over. I mean, if that’s your thing, then more power to you, but it’s not for us. Even if people are saying “Fuck Shark Attack!”, at least they’re saying our name. Well you’ve obviously set yourself apart from the other DJ’s in San Diego. Now that you’re stepping into the bigger DJ world, what does set you apart from the big sharks? PH: I would have to say the new album coming up is going to hopefully set us apart. A lot of producers use some live instruments in their music, but not all of them play them themselves. We are using violins, cellos, harmoniums, bass, guitars

MD: Luckily for us, we’ve been playing music together our whole lives, and even before we started DJ’ing together, music was something we shared.

PH: Bull riding actually... Wait, can you repeat the question? Sex because we usually go for a lot longer then a month with out it anyways... Plus we don’t get paid for sex...we actually have to pay for it...so we’re actually digging our own grave with the whole sex thing...right? Am I right? As DJ’s you constantly have to keep your ear open for the next big thing......who’s on your radar that you think is gonna be big in the next few months? MD: Us...duhhhhh... Mr. White also has some good things coming out that I’ve heard...along with kid lightning... PH: We’re thinking like Tiesto, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, Spin Doctors, and the Rolling Stones...oh and that excludes the Beatles DJ set of coarse.....but seriously checks out Felix Cartel he’s got a new album coming out here pretty soon. Ok last question, best taco shop in San Diego? PH: I would go with Pokez or La Posta.MD: We take our food very seriously.

Q&A BUDDY AKAI If you have not heard of Buddy Akai in San Diego or Southern Ca for that matter, then you probably don’t go out much. I had the pleasure of seeing these guys at the Casbah for the first time back in 06. And let me tell you, I was very impressed. It’s not too often that I get that excited over a band that I must meet them. Skip 2 yrs to Present and these guys have really put there foot down in the electro indie rock dance scene. I know this interview could be very biased as I know them. They just got done with playing the NXNP (North By North Park) Music Festival to a sold out crowd, and it was almost impossible to see them if you didn’t get there early. They also just got nominated for Best Alternative Band for the San Diego Music Awards, so make sure you go and vote for these guys at www.sandiegomusicawards.com

but the music making process. We used to write music at rehearsal until we’d have enough songs to make a record and then hit up the studio. This time around we went in with a couple of set songs and a lot of ideas. It definitely changed our paradigms in the creative process and we actually got to write a lot of stuff in studio. Of course we’re still rocking the show with a lot of strait forward dance beats. But again since we went about this record in a different way there are definitely a few surprises that lean much more to the rock side.

Okay lets get this thing started:

BA: They actually both came hand in hand along with the concept of the band. And mixing both genres came from our influences I’ve always been big on house & electro and a huge 80’s child and had been DJ’ing for the better part of my life and Mayhem for instance has a huge vintage rock back round.

You guys have been around since about 2004 but do you feel you’re just getting started? BA: Actually the concept of Buddy Akai came along at the end of 2004, and we didn’t have our first real show till the Toy Land festival in TJ (a benefit show for kids) in mid may of 2005 but yeah, 3 yrs seems like a long time. You hear about bands playing 8 yrs until they just get started or “make it” but I guess everyone goes at their own pace and we’ve just decided to keep going. So you guys are in the studio right now...can you tell us any secrets about your new record? What’s the NEW direction? Will it still be Indirock with a taste of electro? BA: We’ve made a complete 180 degree turn this time around. Not necessarily in our music

I’m very curious to know if the electro element to your music came first with the initial creation of the band or after. You guys have a more defined rock n roll element to the band, the electro seems second to that. Are you guy’s rockers at heart?

With this electro explosion in 08, how important is it for you guys to maintain the Indi-rock vibe, and the live instruments to your band? Do you feel pressured to add more computers to your sets and push more electro into your song arrangements? BA: It’s very important to hang on to the soul of rock and roll and/or maintain its essence. There’s something about a live band using guitar, drums n bass that you just cant duplicate with a beat box. we’ve never been to meticulous in our music I think that some musicians try way to

hard to come up with something so new or so trendy that in the end it doesn’t seem very real or even digestible to others … our motto since the creation of the band has and will always be Fuck Art! Let’s Dance. That basically means were gonna keep doing what feels good no matter where it takes us, even if that means taking banjo classes. This seems like a very busy year for you guys! How do you balance a tour with recording...and partying? BA: There really is no balance. You work hard and you party harder. And even though you don’t sleep or you wake up with the biggest hangover… as long as there’s a smile on your face when whatever it is you’re doing is done, it’s all worth it. On your MySpace you’ve listed a great line-up of artist you’ve shared the stage with, including MSTRKRFT, VHS or BETA, The Crystal Method, The Cloud Room and Chromeo. Which artist did you find the most exciting to have met? BA: Well its been exciting to meet everyone because they’ve all brought different stuff to the table. You learn so much by watching great artists play and speaking with them. Sound checking with Chromeo then dancing with all the ladies we could at the Beauty Bar with them. Drinking whiskey with MSTRKRFT. Letting that singer from The Bravery steal some beers from our homies fridge, having VHS or BETA give us a shout out on their set and saying we’re their new favorite band…We’ve had the real pleasure of partying and playing alongside great people and real innovators and that’s the most exciting part!

How awesome was it to have the villains remix “cut me up!”!? It’s a great remix! ‘Flawless’ how did this remix come about? Did they ask permission or was it a total surprise? BA: The funny thing about MySpace is it really works. They found us thru a mutual MySpace friend and asked us to remix the track. We sent them the original stems and as soon as we listened to their remix we knew that they totally got it and got us. They knew exactly where to take the song and maintained its original integrity. We love the Villains and the rest of the crew and I’m sure well be working together with them very soon. Actually were in studio right now doing vocals for a True-Pseudo and Whiskey Pete track whom we met thru the Villains. Any Shows you want to promote? What made you decide to become a DJ? DG: Well it just kind of happened, I didn’t plan it I guess it just found me and DJ’ing found each other. I started collecting records when I was very young grade and I always wanted to show people new music and create things with it, before I even had any real idea what DJ’ing was I used to use a cassette recorder and I would pause mix with it when I was in elementary school and I would bring it sometimes to show and tell, so I guess maybe you could say it was in me from the start. So when I figured out a little later in life what a real DJ was I said to my-

HARVARD BASS

self, I need to learn this thing so I could get some my ideas out of my head, and I could share all the new music I was hearing with other people in a creative way. What has been the largest crowd so far that you have played for? DG: I am not sure maybe 30- 60 thousand, I could be off a little, I am bad with crowd #’s, it was a new years in LA, and also the ultra crowd, and the EDC crowd, Dan and I where lucky to play for we’re pretty big as well.

DONALD GLAUDE

them one with you. Where does this ability come from? DG: It comes from within; I feel it is very important for the crowd, me and the music to be one. Who or what has influenced you either personally, or musically through the years? DG: My mother, she gave me what I needed to do all of this. :-), my kids, my love life, and the music.

You have such an incredible way of pumping up a crowd, almost making

If your music is the baby, who are the parents (aka inspirations)?

How did you ever get into all these influences you have?

I look up to tons but here’s a few off the top of my head. <ark Farina, Sebastien Leger, Dahlback, The Juan Maclean, Riva Starr, Alan Braxe, Dr. Dre, 9th wonder, Hi-Tek, Battle Cat, Rah Band, Gap Band, Diana Ross.

I had vinyl of those artists back in the day when I first started DJ’ing. I would just follow up on them... see who they worked with and so on thanks to the internet

Wow so these days everyone and their mom can be a dj with computer software et al, what are you doing to set yourself apart from them? Aka what makes you so damn special? Ha-ha. i just try to play my own style... i try not to play what everyone is playing out there. I’m not against it. I just think people will actually like a change in music selection. Surprise people.

So why DID you start DJ’ing? Girls? Money? Music nerd? All of the above? And who taught you how?

a lot of practicing on your own at home? Self taught. Before, and after school, before and after work, after dinner, after church. All day. I loved it still do

Ha-ha! I guess you can say I was a music nerd. I was taught by mix tapes of artist and morning radio stations before going to school. They would always have guest DJs on the local hip hop station and I would hear how they would mix in and out of tracks. So I would just get ideas and put them into my sets,

And where do you think music is moving when this fidget/LA electro dies out? Or is that too serious? I think its already changing. I hear new sounds all the time. Its just gonna get better I think. I just hope the crowds in the states will still follow it..

people on the dance floor. It didn’t take long to be surrounded by DJs in my everyday life. The more I learned about the music, the more I wanted to control what I could listen to. I started organizing and promoting events, and once word got out that I had started buying records, all my friends urged me to play them out! The rest is history! I’ve been holding down weekly and monthly DJ residencies at venues all over town ever since.

RIS: What made you decide to become a DJ?

RIS: How do you think being a female in a predominately male dominated occupation has helped or hurt you?

used every opportunity I had to play the best music I could find. I don’t feel it’s as uncommon now to see female DJs behind the decks. I know a lot of female DJs that are rocking it right now, and I encourage them because it’s not always easy getting out there. It’s all about having skills, a good taste in music, and an ability to get people to come out and support. RIS: Who has influenced you, either professionally or personally? RS: All the DJs and producers that make me want to dance influence me. Whether they are famous, or they are my friends, I respect everyone that contributes something positive to our scene. Music brings people together, and the people that surround me in my life’s what drives and motivates me.

FLOGGING MOLLY Matt Hensley Gets Real By Leslie Krouse

What makes a band truly remarkable? Insightful lyric, Memorable melodies, Blow-your-mind live performances? The truth is that it takes all of those things along with a boundless enthusiasm, an infectious energy and a supreme devotion to the fans. With this rare combination, a band may ascend past good, or even the record industry’s Holy Grail “marketable”, and reaches sublime. Drawing on the hardships and joys of their own lives and a musical history ranging from old world Celtic to modern day punk rock, the seven members of Flogging Molly do just that, and they do it with a charm and an ease that makes them one of the most accessible bands performing today. I spoke with Matt Hensley, as he drove through the rain in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Back on tour, after leaving the band in 2007, I was curious to see how things were going and what was next in this San Diegan’s life. Here’s a little enlightenment into the effects of what life has to bring us, and the choices we have to make to achieve the ultimate goal, happiness. Matt has definitely found his way. RIS: You’re back on a whirl-win tour all over the world, tired yet? MH: Not at all, I’m having a great time. RIS: You left the band back in 2007, why? MH: Because, I have a seven year old son, I was in the band since before he was born, and ever since he was born part of me always felt a little guilty for not being there, so eventually it got to me. We have a pretty hard core touring schedule; all those things brought me to a place where I kind of lost my mind for a little while. For all the right reasons in the world, but still, I bailed for awhile. I took a really good look at what’s important in my life. I still miss my son, actually my son is sitting next to me, because he’s going on tour with me while he is still out of school, that’s half the solution right there. I just came to the conclusion that

50  WWW.REVOLTSD.COM

this is absolutely what I need to be doing, and as much as I’m into my son, hopefully he will understand; he does understand that this is what his old man does. Everybody’s life has their own ups and downs, and this is just the way he’s going to be brought up, and how he lives. I’m stoked he plays the drums and he’s into music, and I know eventually he will start his own damn band and keep the music flowing. So it’s all good. RIS: Now that you’re back on tour again, are you still happy with your decision?

MH: Absolutely, to leave makes coming back that much better. It’s 100% of your heart and soul that knows this is where you belong, and where you’re supposed to be. RIS: Your new CD ‘Float’ has been your most successful so far. Topping at #4 on Billboard’s top 200, and #1 Independent album, what do you attribute the success to? MH: First of all, I believe as musicians, and song writers we get better at our craft as we go along. I hope that has something to do with it. We tour very heavily, and are constantly growing our fan base, by constantly going all over the world, and putting the music in front of them. I think it’s a combination of all those things. I think personally I’m becoming a better musician myself, and how we relate with each other because we’ve been playing together for so long, it just gets tighter and tighter over the years. I think just over time, little by little we just keep trying to get more and more people into what we’re doing, and now 12 years later this record comes out, and it seems to have this effect, so I’m super stoked. RIS: Now, lets get to the other side of Matt Hensley. You have a lot of stuff going on. You just signed with MACBETH, are you designing a shoe for them? MH: Yes I am. I’ve got the drawing on my computer, and I should have a sample in a couple of weeks. I just shot my ad for them about 10 days

ago. I’m really happy to work with them, this is a really beautiful fit for me, and I feel I have a great home with these guys. They are right down the street from my house, they have a recording studio as well, so I can go and record my own solo stuff if I want to, it just make so much sense on so many different levels, it’s great.

RIS: Your restaurant in Carlsbad, Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub & Grill, How’s that going? MH: It’s going good, actually the horse races are kind of hurting me right now, but I guess that happens every year, so it is what it is. But, overall it’s getting better and better. I had the concept of doing the pub there, but that didn’t necessarily mean that I was an expert restaurant owner. I’ve had to learn a lot of rotten lessons and a lot of hard things by making the mistakes, so I’ve had my fair share of kicks in the face over this. I just try to learn from my mistakes, there not dodgy mistakes, I’m not lighting the place on fire, and people are not being poisoned or anything, but you think about owning your own bar that you can just walk in say I’m the owner, give me a free pint, this is great, the truth is it’s not that easy, it’s a lot of hard work. I live in Carlsbad, and there are not that many places that have this vibe, my pub is all the things that matter to me in my life, music, skateboarding, and art, it’s all over every one of the walls. It’s a little bit of a different vibe for North County, it’s more of a place you would find in New York, L.A. or downtown San Diego, and because I live there, I just feel like I wanted to bring that vibe there. I like to go somewhere like that when I get home, I mean it’s mine, but I like to go there. RIS: You’ve been a Rockstar, Pro-Skater, Restaurateur, Clothing Designer, and now Shoes Designer, What’s next? MH: I hope I don’t have any more genius ideas, because there’s only one of me. I’m pretty over booked right now. The only thing I’m trying to do is to stabilize all the things that I’m doing, and just try to get better at doing them. My clothing

company Innes is starting to do a lot better, after 12 years we are making the best stuff we’ve ever made in my life. With that too, I’ve gone through the ups and downs, I was a skateboarder that doesn’t necessarily mean I know a damn thing about making skateboarding clothes and or any of that stuff. When I started that company I just wanted to make punk-rock skate clothes, because that’s what I wear. I totally ignorant to the fact that everyone around me wasn’t into that, or wanted to look like that, it’s a hell of a way to go out of business if you’re not thinking about that, so I’ve had to compromise a bit in some areas, but for the most part it still maintains that look. I have to say I’m extremely impressed at how this incredibly talented man balances everything in his life. His apparent devotion to everything and everyone that’s a part of his life is inspiring, we could all learn a lesson from Matt that if you work hard, stay true, never give-up, and always follow your dreams, and eventually it will all fall into place. And to his son Oliver, keep practicing on those drums, and you too will have thousands of people cheering for you some day, just like your dad. Good Job Matt.

INTERVIEW

What’s In A Name? By Leslie Krouse

By any other name, wouldn’t sound so ironic. The irony is, by no means are these quys stupid. This business savvy group of guy’s, have turned down at least 3 major label contracts in the last few years, deciding instead to stay completely independent, and maintain control over their music and career. They could surf, skate, and hang out to their hearts content. They have stayed true to that total independence. Remaining independents does have its drawback; you don’t receive the benefits of radio, MTV, or other traditional methods of sales that the major labels provide. In spite of all this they have sold over half-million albums. It’s been exactly one year since Revolt In Style has visited with SS, and what a pretty incredible year it has been for them. Their new CD ‘Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid’ after one week, is already at #22 on Billboard’s top 100 for modern rock/alternative album. This following the success of ‘Cronchitis’, and it’s very successful single 2am, which I hear all the time on the radio, it was just nominated by the SDMA’s for the song of the year, and ‘Cronchitis’ for album of the year. They have also just kicked off their headlining 22 show, nationwide concert tour w/ Pepper, and reggae legends Sly & Robbie, which will finish on Sept. 6; right here back in San Diego at the Open Air Amphitheater. Not to shabby from our very own Ocean Beach crew. I got a chance to get drummer Rymo (Ryan Moran) on the phone for a little Q & A.

52  WWW.REVOLTSD.COM

SLIGHTLY STOOPID RIS: How’s the tour going so far? Rymo: Amazing. We really have had a great week so far. We have sold out the first 3 shows, in Las Vegas, Orange County, and Santa Barbara. These were pretty big venues, we’re really stoked that the show is starting out like this. RIS: Your new album ‘Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid’ was just released on July 22, 2008. It’s awesome by the way. I can probably guess, but how did you guys come up with the title? Rymo: We were sitting around Total Access Studio’s in Redondo Beach where we record. Typically we will start recording around noon and end around 11and night, so lunch is breakfast. Well this particular day we were trying to figure out what to eat, and I think it was Kyle that said, “I’m not Stoned enough to eat breakfast yet” and it just kind of stuck with us. RIS: A couple of the song from your new album ‘False Rhythms’ & ‘Sensimilla’ where recorded in S. Florida, how were you guys able to capture that South Beach vibe so well? Rymo: We were down at Circle House Studio’ in Miami, with Inner Circle (creators of the Cops song ‘Bad Boys) in January. We literally spent 5-6 day in a hotel writing not just those two, but also ‘No Cocaine’, ‘Circle House Blues’, and ‘The Fruit’. The Circle House Studio is a pretty famous place, anytime you see someone on a reality show like making of the band, they shot it there. We had a great time, Miami has a different feel than California, and it puts you in a different place, which we were able to capture in the songs.

RIS: I just got off the phone with Yesod of Pepper; he wanted me to tell you “Rymo, Zildjian Symbols, the only serious choice”. What does that mean? You guys have been touring together for years, what can we expect that maybe different about this upcoming show? Rymo: That’s funny; we both think our drum sets are better than the others, he has this shirt that says that, and he wears it on tour just to get to me. After touring for so long it’s like a family reunion every time we get together. We have a great time and I think that shows during the concert. This is our Tailgate Tour, so it’s going to be a non-stop party. We will play from the new album, at least 5-6 songs, ‘Train’, ‘The Fruit’, and ‘Sensimilla’; and we are definitely going to mix it up with the songs that our fans expect to hear. Just be prepared to have a great time. RIS: Anyone you’d like to give a shout out too? Rymo: I would like to say THANKS to all our fans, for all the support through the years. I’m impressed with how these guys have stayed true to their music, their fans, and themselves. They are especially looking forward to playing in front of their always growing fan base, which they are affectionately referred to as ‘Stoopid Heads’. “They’re just maniac’s straight-up, if it wasn’t for them, we would just be playing in bars. They make it worthwhile; we just have a great time.” The love and appreciation is what make’s Slightly Stoopid the most intelligent band on the planet.

PEPPER

Just the Right Amount of Spice By Leslie Krouse

It’s always amazing to me how small this world really is. I had three interviews set up for this issue, of course Slightly Stoopid and Pepper, they kind of go hand and hand, but I had an interview with Flogging Molly. In preparation for the pepper interview I found out they just came off tour with Flogging Molly in Europe, how much more perfectly tied together can this be, and talking with Yesod Williams it became very apparent how everyone has that Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon syndrome. The Hawaiian-bred, now Southern California living trio, Bret Bollinger (vocals/bass), Kaleo Wassman (vocals/guitar), and Yesod Williams (drums) have become veterans in the touring world. After their 13 European countries tour with FM, and now a 22 city tour with SS, these quys are quite literally taking the world by storm. Now with the release of their fifth studio album ‘Pink Crustaceans and Good Vibrations’ via their self run label Law Records, and produced by Paul Leary (Butthole Surfers), this album is filled with the band’s trademark rock/funk/reggae hybrid grooves. Yesod was going to be my first interview out of the 3, so I couldn’t wait to see what how the band is doing, and if I could get some dirt on either one of the bands. Here’s how it went. RIS: You just got back from touring in Europe with Flogging Molly, and now you’re off and running with Slightly Stoopid. How’s all the touring going, and what’s next? Yesod: It’s great. Flogging Molly is one of the nicest groups we’ve ever worked with, they may seem underground here, but they are huge over in Europe, we had a great time. Could you do me a favor, I’m trying to set up the same tour I’m doing with Slightly Stoopid for next year, but with Flogging Molly, can you ask Matt Hensley about it. I would love to make this happen. We wrap up with SS in San Diego on the 6th of September, this will be my first time playing at the Open Air, and we’re pretty excited about it. Then in October were doing the Law Records Tour with Passafire, The Supervillains, and we are headlining. We’ll run it for a few weeks on the main land; then we’ll do a few shows in Hawaii to finish out the rest of the year. Then it starts all over again next year. RIS: Pepper’s new Album ‘Pink Crustaceans and Good Vibrations’ just hit the stand July 22nd, you guys released 3 different songs to three different radio formats. What made you quys decide to try something like that? Yesod: We’ve had pretty good luck with radio in the past, but it’s like making a woman orgasm, you just have to keep trying different things and see what works. So we sent ‘Freeze’ to a (modern rock) station, and ‘Stand and Fall’ to a (rock) station, and ‘Black Out’ to a (specialty) station, we get to choose what gets played were. Typically you’d have to wait for some old guy in a suit and tie, to decide on what single he thinks will be a hit. That’s why we started Law Records, well actually my dad started it back in the 80’s, he had a band back then call The Law and they had their own independent label. We want to set a standard of integrity with our own label, that anyone who was under our label, you would have faith in knowing that they are going to be good. RIS: How much did growing up in a musical family influence you? Yesod: I guess you could say it was instilled in me at a young age; it just soaked into my brain. Not only did my dad play in a band, but my mom was a promoter in Hawaii as well. I think I was 3 when I saw my first concert. I was always around the stage and performers, bands

like Metallica and Bon Jovi. When I was growing up made me realize that these are just regular people doing what they love, it was then when I realized it was attainable to achieve.

great, one take on every song.

RIS: Back to the new CD. One of the singles ‘Black Out’ you released, you recorded with Randy Bradbury of Pennywise, and then cut a couple more with him, how did that happen?

Yesod: You know most people don’t know this, but when we moved from Hawaii we chose to live in San Diego. We knew it was the most like Hawaii, just more people and cars. I would like to say THANKS to Pamela at Canes. She always gave us a place to play; she took really good care of us.

Yesod: We met Randy and the boys from Pennywise on the road with the Warped Tour, and have become pretty good friends. Well, they were recording next door, and Randy wondered over looking for “Hawaiian Water” (we call Coors Light Hawaiian water), we knew he had an incredible voice, so after a few waters we told him to get in there and lay down some vocals, he didn’t even listen to the songs prior to laying his tracks. He went straight into the vocal booth and said “Run It” it was

RIS: Anyone you’d like to give a shout out to?

Yesod had nothing but incredible thing to say about both Slightly Stoopid and Flogging Molly, he feels extremely fortunate to be working with both. I’m looking forward to the video interview from the Tailgate Show on September 6th, 2008 with these quys, it’s going to be an insane good time.

HEAR THIS By Leslie Krouse

Locals Only Editor’s Pick - WAR STORIES - WAR STORIES Genre - Alt/Rock It’s seems once again SDMA has overlooked another incredible San Diego Band. Our very own War Stories is the sleeping giant about to be woken up. In a time when music sometime seems to be more about fashion than songs, scenes that sincerity, and words without meaning, it’s encouraging to know that someone still does it for the right reasons; to create music for the love of sharing their artistic perspective. Lead vocalist Evan Robinson’s strong, and truly incredible voice, reminiscent of Bono (U2), along with Reid Curby/Guitar, Adam Barker/Drums, and Eric Mace/ Bass, this foursome has created their self title depute album with a passion that irradiates through every note, in every song. Some of my favorites include ‘Lion’, ‘Rage’ and ‘Take My Everything’, each song has it’s own unique style and sound, that is powerful, passionate, and uncompromising. There is one song that puts everything in place ‘What Does God See’ wow, it’s a shame “when everything is your fault”, but all is not lost. This is a great album, not only for the heart, but for the soul. See for yourself. Kudos to dad, singing back up. Enjoy, I did....

OPM – Golden State Of Mind

Genre- Reggae/Alt/Rock Good shit guys, and I am talking about the CD this time. This definitely isn’t your momma’s LP, unless your momma likes ‘Honey’. I have to say momma likes. With guest appearances by reggae legend Pato Banton, Sen Dog (Cypress Hill), Johnny Richter (Kottonmouth Kings), Big B, Dirtball, Jim Perkins (Dumbluck), Jamie Allensworth, Kevin (The B-side Players), & DJ Product of (Hed pe), man this would be a kick-ass party, to have all these guys together jamming to these tunes. Wait, it’s all right here wrapped up in one tidy package. Songs like ‘Feel the vibration’ and ‘Square Peg’ have the old school OPM sound, feel good lyrics, and quirky vibe puts a smile on your face, and makes you want to tap your foot, or your girlfriend, you choose. This is the 2nd release under the Suburban Noize Label, and probably their finest to date.

Slightly Stoopid – Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid

Genre- Rock/Reggae This is the groups newest release on their own Stoopid Records label, includes outtakes from both the Closer To The Sun, which are tracks that were previously issued as a limited edition bonus CD, and Cronchitis sessions as well as a bevy of new material recorded at Miami’s famed Circle House Studios. Also include are such tunes as UB40’s ‘I Would Do For You’ and the traditional ‘I Know You Rider’, which was most notably covered by the Grateful Dead. Some of the great songs included on this CD are ‘The Fruits’ and ‘Circle House Blues’, and the soon to be chant-along song sensation ‘Sensimilla’. For all you “Stoopid Heads” this is the album for you.

Pepper – Pink Crustaceans And Good Vibrations

Genre – Hip/Punk/Reggae Pink Crustaceans is the fifth studio release for Pepper, and is sure to be their biggest and best yet. With guitarist Kaleo Wassman’s standout opening vocal track in ‘Freeze’ is an ominous, aggressive call-to-arms on the dance floor, that starts like a secret assault, then launches into a full blown hold-up. With change ups that take you down to the depths of dark times, and brings you back to the triumphant of a partnership that stands the test of time, bassist Bret Bollinger, and Kaleo, delivers on ‘Stand and Fall’, and drummer Yesod Williams pulls the album together in the same manner that he holds the band together, with an explosive percussion set that would make his father proud.

The K23 Orchestra

Genre - Their Own I’ve been hit up to review a CD in some of the strangest places, but Blockbuster P.B. Well it just goes with the territory. I have to say I’m pleasantly surprised. No stranger to San Diego audiences, Alfred Howard & The K23 Orchestra has been captivating audience’s city wide for years now. With their combinations of funk, soul, hip-hop, rock, they have truly created their own genre. Alfred Howard incredibly meaningful, and sometimes poignant lyrics, combined with Steve Craft/ drums, Ian Wright/guitar, Matt LaBarber/bass, and Josh Rice/Keyboards have created a CD worth listing to. Some of my favorites include ‘Whoop Tee Dee’, ‘Ace’ and ‘Dovetail’. In true orchestra form, the sweet instrumental sounds of ‘Drifting Nexus’ were they are joined by Rachel Moore, Sarah Eunhae Palk, and Michael Tagart. And a special shout to Rosy-Dawn Selwitz sultry sounds in ‘Connected’. Good luck at the SDMA’s

Pushing Rope – Murderous Songs Of Despair

Genre – Rock/Country Pushing Rope is a little like Charlie Daniels (Devil Went Down To Georgia) went down south and ran into Brian Setzer (Stay Cat Strut) then the two of them met up with Johnny Cash. And the 3 of them created this band. Tattoo artist, and stand-up bass player Sierra Colt, asked if we could take a listen, and after hearing them I think we all need to pop in on a set. Sierra is joined by his band mates, JR/guitar, Danny/banjo, Shawn/banging elk skin and blowing up dolls (I have to see the show just to find out what those sound like), and George who plays a mean fiddle. This is seriously a fun album to listen to, and I hear the live show is even better. Some of the songs I enjoyed, ‘Reign In Hell’, ‘Pushin Dope’ and one that’s a little more on the mellow/serious side ‘Cuttin’ Moon’. You can catch them at a local bar near you. Check out their MySpace for dates and locations, totally worth it.

Thanks to all of you that sent in CDs! The response has been ridiculously overwhelming. I have so many CD’s to choose from each month and only space enough for 6 each issue. If your CD didn’t get reviewed yet don’t think that your music sucks. It just means I haven’t gotten to it yet. If you got talent, we’ll showcase it. Send your CD and Bio C/O Leslie Krouse, Revolt In Style Magazine, P.O Box 9771, San Diego, CA 92169 and you just might end up in the next issue of Revolt In Style Magazine. Keep sending in your music and we’ll keep promoting it.

REVIEW 2 Be or Not 2 Be By Beth Accomando

Combine Shakespeare, a greaser Jesus, and a perverse take on High School Musical and you’ll get an inkling of what Hamlet 2 is like. British comedian Steve Coogan (who’s also in Tropic Thunder) plays high school drama teacher Dana Marschz. With his department about to be cut, Marschz stages a politically incorrect musical sequel to Hamlet as a means of proving the value of the arts in school. “It satirizes inspirational teacher movies,” Coogan told me at Comic-Con, “and of course it comes full circle and becomes one itself at the end. I thought they [writers Pam Brady and Eric D. Eisner] made really smart choices, and the script had a kind of edginess to it. And it wasn’t cynical. Often smart and cynical go hand in hand. This was smart but it had real heart to it.” It also had a musical number called Rock Me Sexy Jesus in which Coogan hilariously plays a fifties-style greaser son of god. “I was a little nervous about it,” Coogan confessed, “because of course if you’re going to do something like that you really have to head straight at it. You can’t flinch. You have to really commit yourself to doing it otherwise you’re going to look like an idiot in a non-comedy way. But if you are doing stuff that is bold and different there has to be a slight element of trepidation and discomfort. But I think I look pretty good as sexy Jesus.” He does look good and he’s damn funny too. Coogan described his Jesus as having an “element of trailer trash sexiness.” Of this play within the film, director Andrew Fleming said, “We didn’t want it to be bad. We wanted it to be bizarre and filled with bad ideas but have a kind of conviction to it that turns it into something better than you would expect. The ultimate meaning of it is that everybody is transformed in some way and that is ultimately what art is supposed to do.” Marschz’ play proves so politically incorrect that it somehow manages to move beyond mere offensiveness. Coogan explained, “There’s a kind of comedy that tries to be offensive just for the sake of being offensive, and there’s other comedy where you can tell where it comes from, that it has heart and

58  WWW.REVOLTSD.COM

there’s a kind of good naturedness beneath it. This movie has a generosity of spirit even though there are these things that could be very offensive. That’s the trick to comedy that takes risks. Sometimes people laugh at things because they’re hearing someone say something that they think they shouldn’t laugh at it. Often you find people laughing and they cover their mouth as they laugh because they think they shouldn’t. It’s a kind of release and a good thing.” The film also pokes delightful fun at Hollywood celebrity by casting Oscar-nominated actress Elisabeth Shue as herself. But in the film she’s retired from acting to take up a nursing career and no one seems to remember her. Fleming says he “stalked her and begged her to do the part. She was completely game for it. She was completely up for the humiliation of it. There was this one scene where the kids in the class don’t know who she is and that was actually her idea.” A sexy Jesus, a Hollywood celeb poking fun at herself, and the Bard butchered – what more could you ask for in a late summer comedy?

COMIC CON 08

By Beth Accomando Comic-Con 2008 is over. High points: The Spirit panel with the curmudgeonly but passionate Frank Miller; the slo-mo shootout between Simon Pegg and fans at the Spaced fan favorites screening; the respect emanating from young fans for manga artist Tite Kubo; editorial cartoonist Mike Peters not

being able to answer a single question succinctly; seeing Paris Hilton act like a normal human being at the Repo: The Genetic Opera panel; and animator Ralph Bakshi (remember Fritz the Cat and Wizards?) starting his panel a full half hour early and railing against Hollywood studios. Noticeably absent at the Con was Paramount which could have done something on either Tropic Thunder or Star Trek. I mean how could you NOT do a panel on the new Star Trek movie at ComicCon? Also Bond once again snubbed the Con. Maybe those Brits think they’re above us. Too bad. Best swag: the cool set of character posters from The Spirit and the What Would Neil Patrick Harris Do bracelets from Harold and Kumar. MINI REVIEWS

WATCH THIS IN THEATRES

By Beth Accomando

Tropic Thunder (Paramount)

Ben Stiller writes, directs and stars in this blood-soaked spoof on war movies in which a group of actors get dropped in the middle of the jungle so they can get in touch with some real fear. Robert Downey, Jr. plays a method Aussie actor who gets a skin pigment operation so he can play a black man. That’s just so wrong! Yet it’s so extreme that it manages to come out the other side and be funny. The biggest surprise is a fat, bald Tom Cruise as an obnoxious studio exec. He’s hysterical! Opens August 13.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Warner Brothers)

When George Lucas announced a feature length animated film to follow up the short animation fills that ran on Cartoon Network, I was thrilled. Those anime-style mini-cartoons kicked ass. But for the feature film, Lucas abandoned that bold animated style in favor of a 3-D, CGI, video game style that’s remarkably bland. The human characters look awful but the aliens have a little more appeal. But it’s Star Wars so I’ll have to check it out. Opens August 15.

Mirrors (20th Century Fox)

Alexandre Aja gained cult fame for his horror flick High Tension and his remake of The Hills Have Eyes. Now he finds terror lurking inside mirrors. At Comic-Con, Aja promised to take the gore further than The Hills Have Eyes, and he claimed he didn’t know how “the MPAA let us get away with an R.” Star Kiefer Sutherland added that it was Aja’s job to “scare the audience, but my responsibility is to make you care.” We got a preview of one jawdropping effects scene that made me hopeful for what the rest of the film might be like. Opens August 15.

House Bunny

(Columbia) Anna Faris, the appealingly ditsy blonde from the Scary Movie franchise, plays a Playboy Bunny expelled from the mansion. With nowhere to go she ends up with the sorority girls of Zeta Alpha Zeta who are in desperate need of a makeover. A kind of Revenge of the Nerds but replace the nerdy guys with hot chicks, so a kind of Revenge of the Big-Breasted Bimbo Bunnies with Hearts of Gold. Yeah, that’s it. Opens August 22.

Bottle Shock

(Freestyle Releasing) Inspired by a real event that rocked the wine world, Bottle Shock looks to 1976 and the year California wines beat out the snooty French in a blind tasting on their turf. Alan Rickman steals the show as a snobbish Brit running a wine shop in Paris. He ventures to California in the hopes of arranging something of a publicity stunt to get his shop more attention. To his surprise he finds that the hick farmers in Napa were actually making respectable wines. Opening August 15 at Landmark’s La Jolla Village and Hillcrest Cinemas

Death Race

(Universal) Jason Statham flexes his action muscles yet again in this big budget remake of the low budget 70s cult fav Death Race 2000. Statham plays a con forced by the warden of a notorious prison to compete in a car race to the death (hence the title) with other inmates. Big, noisy, and with far too much money and far too little ingenuity. Needs either more of the Grindhouse spirit or more of Mad Max’s savvy for car chases. Opens August 22.

interview with Nanette Burstein By Beth Accomando

The new documentary American Teen is something of a real life Breakfast Club. You remember that John Hughes film about “a brain, a beauty, a jock, a rebel, and a recluse...” who meet on Saturday detention and change each other’s lives forever? Well filmmaker Nanette Burstein wanted to look beyond the labels to find out what teens today are like. Burstein searched the Midwest to find the perfect school for her documentary. She narrowed her focus to ten schools in four states and then interviewed all the incoming seniors to figure out which school would provide the most compelling stories. She finally decided on Warsaw, Indiana and five seniors that could easily be stereotyped as a jock, a princess, a rebel, a heartthrob, and a geek.

By removing race from the equation, Burstein allows us to look at more universal questions. Although there are some new challenges for contemporary teens, Burstein concludes that many things have not changed. Surviving high school is still tough as kids face issues of trying to fit in and trying to figure out what to do with the rest of their lives. American Teen and its high school seniors will be remembered thanks to Burstein’s compassionate and well-observed efforts.

INTERVIEW

AMERICAN TEEN

But even Megan eventually wins us over as she reveals the impact of a family tragedy and the pressure her father places on her to attend Notre Dame. One thing that initially strikes you about Burstein’s subjects is that they’re all white. But Burstein says this does not prove to be a disadvantage: “all the issues that come up about the insecurity and the cruelty and wanting to fit in, and the heartbreak, that is completely universal”

American Teen is currently in theaters.

But unlike The Breakfast Club that spent a single day with its teens, Burstein filmed her students every day for ten months: “Everyday we’d show up at lunch because it was the easiest way to find all the kids and we’d find out what was going on, what was the latest and greatest, and have to judge at every moment what we would be shooting based on what they were telling us.” From the beginning, the nerdy Jake and the rebellious Hannah were open to Burstein filming their most intimate moments. But the popular kids were far more guarded because “I suppose they had a lot more to lose because they worried about their reputation more and they are people that are being watched all the time.” Maybe that’s why we take so quickly to the artsy Hannah who feels a burning need to escape Warsaw. Hannah proves willing to discuss anything, including her surprise when the campus heartthrob takes an interest in her. As she notes in the film, “Girls would give their left boob to go on a date with him and he’s so into hanging out with me.” But Hannah’s romance hits a snag. So Burstein was like a doctor on call 24/7 ready to film anything on a moment’s notice. When a tearful Hannah calls a male friend over one night for emotional support, Burstein was there. “I went with just a little camera,” she recalled, “and put a microphone on him and I lit them with my car headlights, and she just ignored the camera and didn’t care.” Hannah’s emotional upheavals are easy to identify with but prom queen Megan is a little harder to warm up to. At one point Megan’s involved in sending out a topless photo of a fellow student across the Internet. Burstein says “it was an important moment to show because it really is how technology can be devastating to people in high school now it’s not like passing a note any more it can be all over town instantly.”

EDITOR’S CHOICE Madden NFL 09 - Xbox360, PS3, Wii, PSP, DS

Not just a roster update. Many improvements have been implemented into 30-year Franchise Mode as well as the superstar modes, which now allow players to control the incoming rookie class such as Darren McFadden. The game also features the new Madden Moments, where NFL fans can replay real life conditions from last year’s season. Remember Devin Hester’s two touchdown returns against the Denver Broncos? You have to try and duplicate this phenomenal performance in Madden Moments. Good luck. Another major addition is the Madden IQ. Players go through four rigorous virtual training modes (Rush, Pass, Tackle, Defense drills) in order to measure their skills. The better you do, the higher your “Skills” difficulty level is. As you go through the season, your Madden IQ will fluctuate based on your performance. Taking on other players with better skill levels wont affect the gameplay, as the game features a handicap system which allows users with different IQ’s to take each other on an equal playing field. EA has also answered the call to their fans by introducing online leagues that can support up to 32 players. All the important features make it online from team schedules, in-depth statistics, trades, and salary caps. There is even a virtual trophy for the Super Bowl winner, which adds that extra incentive to annihilate your friends. Release date NOW

It’s apparently a bid by Leonid, Dreadknight and leader of the Order, to become a god. One mighty hero rises up against the evil, and that’s Sigmund, a strong young man who has earned the adoration of the people. But this isn’t the main character of the story--that role falls to Capell, a minstrel who happens to have the unfortunate gift of being identical in appearance to the hero of the resistance. When the Order happens upon poor Capell, he gets promptly shipped off to prison. We saw a portion of a cutscene where Capell begs with a guard for a little food, since he’d been locked up for about three days at that point and was getting a little peckish. The scene was acted out in-engine and had a nice flow to it. Infinite Undiscovery release date September 3rd, 2008

“We all know where you’ve been... Find out where you’re GOING!” by Angela Lovell

VIRGINia Is For Lovers It was a little creepy at your birthday party when you drunkenly admitted to making out with your cousin, but hey... At least your cousin is hot! Just sayin! It could be worse. Still, I suggest you never bring it up again, Virgo, and definitely move to another state since none of your friends are planning to speak to you ever again anyway.

Don’t Hate the Playa, Hate the LIBRAme All Libras are the same. John Mayer - your current king - has earned himself quite the reputation as a philanderer, but that’s just bullshit. If it wasn’t for money and/or geetars, none of you would ever get laid. It’s cool though, Libra - while you’re still on top of your game we’ll all keep pretending that you’re awesome - especially since you’re buying dinner.

into the classics, Goat, but if you don’t step up your game, you’re gonna have to keep boinking your mom’s friend in the garage whenever her husband is sleeping off his angrydrunk. And that’s exactly how bitchez get killed by crochet sets.

Don’t Go In the WATERBEARER Can’t you smell yourself?! Or do you just not care? I don’t know which is worse, but I do know that you’ll be single for a long-ass time. The last time you came over I had to throw out my couch afterwards. I know you wanna find love, Aquarius, but first you gotta love soap. And maybe shampoo. Conditioner couldn’t hurt. Hopefully it will be a long affair with these products and not just another half-ass weekend orgy.

FISHin’ For Compliments SCORPIOor Choice Your iPod keeps crashing because it’s trying to tell you that your choice in music sucks. You’re such a Debbie Downer, Scorpio. Nobody invites you to gatherings anymore because you insist on plugging in your suicide-inducing tunes and telling us why it doesn’t matter if we vote or recycle. God, you’re diatribes are dull. It’s enough to make even your electrical gadgets kill themselves.

You suck a big one, Pisces. The saddest part is you know it, yet continue to suck! Why do you interrupt people having far more interesting conversations than you could ever hope to provide with that creepy babytalk voice you do?! I know you want us to tell you how natural your hair looks, but we won’t. Cos it doesn’t. And quit using sunless tanner if you can’t spread it properly! You look like a spotted sea creature - a really obnoxious one.

Old and SAGging

A Few RAMifications

Buy stock in fart tablets cos you done graduated from Tums! I told you not to lay down after eating, Archer! Prop yourself up in front of some trashy reality TV for at least an hour (you’re digesting as slowly as a Komodo Dragon these days.) I’d warn you not to go in the water, but the only reason you go near water is to accumulate more sun damage.

Jen Aniston is one dumbass Aries getting all giddy about dating John Mayer. John Mayer?! This dude whips out his geetar and sings, “Bubble gum tongue,” to everything with a sloppy hole! Quit behaving like a Ram caught in the headlights and get your fiery self together! Your friends can’t take another phase of your weepy drunkdialing and neither can your ego. It’s a one-way ticket to bad plastic surgery! (And quit considering those “Angelina lips!”)

“CAPRICORNuts!” You need to stop watching Heathers and learn to quote something the kids are into. May I suggest Robot Chicken or Superbad? It’s okay to be

That’s BULLogna Has-Been Taurus, Tori Spelling, dropped out of the shitstorm that is the new 90210 when she found out her old costars - Brenda and Kelly - were making three times her salary. Do not follow her lead, Taurus! Take the money and run, you loser! Cos it’s just a matter of time before they realize you’ll work for a box of Fudgesicles and a new pair of shoelaces.

Evil TWINS You’d be a lot hotter if you got a real haircut and dressed more flatteringly. I’d like to present Evidence A and B: The Olsen Twins! Geminis to the core, creepy as hell, but kinda hot. Hotter when they let other people (professional stylists) dress them. I know you’re saying, “I love the Olsen Twins’ weird wardrobe!” but that’s cos you’re a whacked-out Gemini! DUH! Ask a fire sign to dress you and you’re sure to get more action. (And quit mouthing “PRUNE” when the cameras are on you! It makes you look like you’re peeing a little in your pants!)

CRABsolutely! Needy-for-attention and usually coked out Cancer, Robin Williams, is going on tour for the first time in FO EVA and I think this should inspire the rest of you chubby losers. I know it will be hard to venture away from your sweat-stained bed and sofa - especially after you bought Pringles in bulk - but now is the time to venture out into the world and DO STUFF! (Yes, hotdog eating contests count.)

The LION the Witch and the Wardrobe You love your make-believe, Leo, so much that you’ve got a creepy costume collection hidden away in the basement! Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and JK Rowling are both weirdo Leos, giving the world a magical little place to believe in. And we like that freaky little world! But you need to hang up those leather chaps and focus more on the lies, I mean, stories you tell. They’re only fit for children, but hey! Children have money to spend too!
