REVOLT SUMMER SURF SERIES
Hey Guys I was down at your Summer Surf Series on Saturday with my son. He competed in your contests last year and it was all we heard about for months. I wanted to see what it was all about this year, so I came down to the beach with him. I was impressed. Considering the talent pool, he did quite well and I could not be more proud. I wanted to say that we appreciate what you guys are all about. These little guys (& girls) are having a tough time finding fun and affordable activities for the summer. Your event is pretty cool. The Green twist is really a good idea. It is a well run, positive experience for everyone. Keep up the good work, we’ll see you at the next one in July. Sincerely, Mark Thanks Mark Take a look at the center spread we ran a bunch of pics for you and your boy. Glad we can help. Yep, we saw a void in the surf contests in SD and 3 years later we are still here. The event gets bigger and better each year. We just launched a site with more info, scores, pictures & video - www.revoltsurfseries.com
ON THE BEACH? REALLY?
Revolt, Hey, how do you get permission to park your truck on the beach? I saw you guys down at that surf comp at Crystal Pier. I had to park, like ten blocks away from the ocean cause it’s so packed & you guys just drive right down there. WTF? I want to park my ride on the sand too! Who do I need to suck up to? Robert Well Bob, It helps that the contest was our own. We also have some friends in pretty high places. But most of all the point of the excersise is to make people aware of Bio Diesel. ‘Big Blue’ runs on the super clean fuel from New Leaf Biofuels and we want more people to know about it. Um, yeah, it is pretty friggin’ nice havin’ your ride right down there on the beach with you though. No sucking. Ha
SCHWING!
Holy crap. I cant believe how killer the Swimwear Issue is this year. Those are the most amazing chicks I think I ever saw. I bought the DVD and it’s pretty damned good man. Where did you find these hotties? I know they’re not from around here. I want to meet them. Steve O Hey Steve O We’re pretty happy with the Issue as well. Yep, we had pretty good sales on the DVD too. Thanks for buying one. People really seemed to like it. Actually, all the models are from San Diego (or near by). They were all at our Anthology show last month. You missed it maaaan. I think we might have to do another Swimwear Issue this year. Hmmm, good thinkin’.....
REVOLT MUSIC SECTION ROCKS!
Hi Leslie, I think you are the best source for finding out who is making a difference in the San Diego Music Scene. You feature real bands, tell their stories, promote their shows. There is no one else doing what you are. Local musicians (like me) need some more recognition and you are helping the cause BIG TIME. Thank you so much, keep ED up the good work. 944 can kiss my butt. Pacific can lick my balls. SOR Revolt In Style is the only S.D. mag that matters anyway. CEN - Roger Easy bru. People might get the wrong idea. But thank you. We agree.

BLAH BLAH BLAH
PUBLISHER’S NOTE Greetings from REVOLT Anybody still hurting from the 4th of July? I don’t think we had any rest the entire holiday weekend. That’s what I love about our great city. We never slow, we never let ‘em get us down. With the Booze Ban in full effect at the beaches, San Diegans had to figure out a way to celebrate like the ‘Rockstars’ we imagine ourselves to be. Some of you headed for Mission Bay & joined the gazillion or so ‘floatillas’ that allowed people to drink by staying 30 yards offshore. There were so many rafts out there, by late afternoon you could walk across water like ‘ol Jesus himself. That was truly a sight to see, There was no shortage of House parties this year. The other million or so people missing from our beaches were tightly packed into local backyards and patios, barbecuing anything that wasn’t moving (sorry ‘bout your cat, Mom) and slamming down every bit of alcohol known to mankind. “Hey, Can I smoke this cigar out here?” A few groups of shiny San Diegans opted for a more sanitized & sterile Hotel Poolside to plop down next to and pay out the nose for perfectly chilled martinis. Michael Lee kicked off his new venture called ‘Bikini Week’ at all the happening Pools downtown. Sexy, sexy. Next! Then there was the select group of maniacs that found the one remaining loophole and capitalized on it. Kate Sessions park is the last remaining park where you can drink. Not quite at the beach, but a good view of the water, none the less. A few hundred of your closest friends to help drain the beer level of the State of California. A giant Slip & Slide & nothing short of a ‘Rave’ atmosphere. Plenty of brain cells were destroyed in that park, my friends. We heard that the party went well into the morning hours. I think you guys win. Now pick that shit up! So no matter what you did this year to celebrate, the point is...YOU DID. Independence Day Rocks. And so do you San Diego. Regardless of which side of the Alcohol Ban you sit on, it doesn’t really matter. We all had an awesome 4th of July weekend. Now where’s that Advil? Peace, B & L

PARTY PARTY
THE HAPPY HOUR REVOLUTION THIS AIN’T YER PAPPY’S HAPPY HOUR...
There is a time for work and there is a time for play. We work hard and we deserve to be catered to, once in awhile. Enter The Happy Hour. We have all fallen victim to the Happy Hour Trap at one time or another. You know. The lure of cocktails and food at an amazing price. Sounds good enough, but you usually wind up choking down greasy creations made from last night’s special and tossing back average, ‘discounted’ well cocktails or beer. Just a bar trying to lure unsuspecting patrons in during their slow hours of business. No Mas, my friends. We put together a great collection of alternatives to the ‘Crappy Happy Hour Trap’ These destinations will offer a choice of interesting surroundings, affordable cocktails & some delectable dishes to help you wind down after a hard days (or nights) work.
HIGH TIME HAPPY HOUR
LATE NIGHT HAPPY HOUR
Monday - Saturday 3pm - 7 & All Day Sun $5 Well Cocktails $7 House Cocktails $3 Draft Beer $6 Wine by the glass
Friday and Saturday, 11pm - close All happy hour pricing, $4 Jack Daniels, Bacardi and Svedka Ok, this one is deffinitely a bit different. It’s getting kinda late. The usual bars downtown are packed & there’s no way you’re standing in line for an hour, just to grab a ten dollar Heinekin. What to do? Roll down to East Village Tavern & get in a few frames while sipping on a few inexpensive beverages. This is a great meeting place for friends, large groups or small, doesn’t matter. They have recently expanded the venue so now there is plenty of room for everyone. The casual atmosphere attracts an young attractive demographic. Perfect place for meeting a ‘real’ person.
COOL & HIP NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE. Bing Crosby’s Restaurant In Fashion Valley has a novel idea. Great atmosphere, great food, great service, great entertainment, close to everything. The stylish crew recreate the Hollywood country club atmosphere of the 1930s, including a piano lounge and Bing Crosby memorabilia. The food is absolutely spot on & the drinks are delicious. Try the Razz Mojito or June in January signature cocktails. Sit back and take in the rich dark paneled walls & the plush high back boothes while a ‘Big Band’ style crooner fills the room with some classic music. General Manager Chris Enea is a gracious host and makes everyone feel comfortable.

Since then, he has not had virtually no external ear infections. Use Ear Saver each time after surfing and it will prevent ear infections in the future.15.00 www.ear-saver.com

ENVIRONMENT
MOTHER EARTH NEWS 10 Ocean Saving Tips 1. Reduce your plastic consumption. The most frequently collected items during beach cleanups are made of plastic — think reusable shopping bags, water bottles and utensils. 2. Make informed seafood choices. Keep a copy of the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s seafood guide in your wallet or text Blue Ocean’s FishPhone to help you choose sustainable seafood at th e grocery store or a restaurant. 3. Dispose of chemicals properly. Never pour chemicals, pharmaceuticals, oil or paint into the drain or toilets. Check with your county’s household hazardous waste program to properly dispose of or recycle chemicals and keep them out of rivers and oceans.
ELECTRIC WAKEBOAT
Aptera co-founder launches hybrid electric wake boat One of the guys behind the Aptera Motors EV is turning his eco-consciousness to boating with a 375-horsepower cruiser he calls the world’s first hybrid sports boat. Chris Anthony, who co-founded the company producing the Aptera 2e electric car, says the Epic Wakeboats 23E burns 50 percent less fuel and emits half as much CO2 as a typical wakeboard boat during a four-hour outing on the water. It also represents a new direction for gas-electric technology in boats. The sleek 22-footer is a series hybrid that uses a small gasoline engine to drive a generator that keeps the lithium-ion batteries going as they approach depletion. It’s similar to what you’ll find under the hood of the Chevrolet Volt, and we haven’t heard of anyone using something like this in a boat. The Island Pilot DSe is equipped with a parallel hybrid system, while the 145 Hybrid by Scout Boats is more like a powerboat with a couple of trolling motors strapped to the stern. “This is a real turning point in recreational boating,” Anthony told Wired.com. “Nothing can compete with the 23E.” Anthony started boat building by molding hulls in his garage. His company’s first boat, the 23V, was billed as “the world’s first wake boat” when it hit the market in 2005. It is designed specifically for wakeboarding. It features 4,000 pounds of water ballast and a design Anthony calls dynamic reduction of pressure (or “DROP”) zone hull technology, which pulls the hull into the water at speed to create huge wakes.
The latest innovation is a hybrid system Anthony calls Flux Propulsion EVO 8.1 Marine Drive. He says it produces the equivalent of 375 horsepower, enough to propel the 23E to 36 mph while burning far less fuel than comparable vessels. The 23E allows for a one hour wakeboarding session without burning a drop of fuel. “My accomplishments with Aptera Motors and EPIC Wakeboats are two different conversations,” Anthony said. “Both companies are about saving the environment but in totally different ways. Aptera Motors is about helping people do their part to save the environment while commuting to work, and EPIC Wakeboats is more about saving the environment while having fun.” The batteries, which are mounted along the centerline of the boat, can be recharged from a common 110- or 220-volt wall socket, and Anthony hopes buyers will slap a few solar panels on their boathouse roofs to make the 23E that much greener. As for mixing electricity and water, don’t sweat it. Anthony says it’s perfectly safe. “A lot of people get scared when they think hybrid boats because of the combination of water and electricity, but everything about the E23 is marine appropriate,” he said. “Even if you sink the boat there won’t be a problem.” The 23E doesn’t skimp on the amenities, either. It’s got a stereo with 10 speakers for blasting tunes when your rip’n and ride’n and a dual rudder system for quick turns. With room for 14 people, you won’t have to leave anyone back at the marina. All this technology ain’t cheap, with the boat expected to cost as much as $150,000 when it hits the water in July. Epic hopes to produce a $70,000 model by 2012, and it’s considering a diesel-electric model down the line. Photos: Epic Wakeboats
4. Choose green detergents and household cleaners—or make your own! Besides being better for your own health, these products are safer for the environment since what goes down the drain can end up in our oceans. 5. Get the dirt on your beachside retreat. Before you stay in a hotel on the coast, ask staff what happens to their sewage and swimming pool water, and if they source their restaurant fish from sustainable sources. 6. Find out the source of your food. Buying local, organic food reduces your carbon footprint, supports the local economy and reduces the amount of pesticides and fertilizers that end up not just in your stomach, but as run-off in rivers and oceans, too. 7. Fill your yard with native species. Reducing the amount of grass in your lawn by planting native shrubs and flower beds will provide a better habitat for birds and other wildlife and require far less water and fertilizer, which can seep into the oceans. 8. Keep your beach visit clean. When visiting the beach, stay off fragile sand dunes, take your trash with you and leave plants, birds and wildlife for everyone to enjoy. Find a Conservancy coastal preserve near you. 9. Choose alternatives to coral. Whether shopping for jewelry, household décor or accessories for your fish tank, do your part to leave fragile coral reef habitats untouched by buying products that aren’t made of real coral. 10. Celebrate our oceans. Whether you live inland or on the coast, we are all connected to the ocean; take the time to organize or participate in activities that restore and celebrate the ocean, and help support The Nature Conservancy’s ocean conservation work by visiting http://www.nature.org/initiatives/marine/

MAKING MOVES
about me doing hair. This was something I just jumped into, and I enjoy it. Now how did you get A Style Concierge started?
JEREMY HARRIS The Style Guru by Leslie Krouse
San Diego is such an amazing town, you could virtually run in the same circles as someone, and not know them, and by some random chance you meet. Jeremy is at the center of said circle. Not only is he one of the most down to earth guys you will ever meet, but probably one of the most talented. His passion for creating beauty, and style, and his dedication to providing San Diegans with a place to go and be re-invented, sets him apart from all others. I met Jeremy on our cover photo shoot in Coronado, but I got to know Jeremy at his Salon, A Style Concierge, and here’s what I learned about this amazing artist. So, Jeremy what got you into the art of hairstyling? Jeremy: There’s a hell of a story. I was actually looking into being a fashion designer. I started my own line, right out of high school I moved up to Oregon, and I was planning on doing it. I had three investors that were going to pay for everything for me to start it, but I was young, only 17, and I figured I got a lot to learn, and if I did it now I would end up blowing all the money the investors wanted to put into it, because I wouldn’t be able to handle the business. So I joined the Navy, go figure. So I did that for a while, I was actually a barber while I was in Navy. Once I got out I figured I might as well go to hair school, learn how to do hair and make-up, and be able to understand everything I wanted in the fashion industry. So I walked into the Paul Mitchell School in O.C. and saw 250 girls, I was like, huh, let me think about this, I could work with beautiful women, or I could be out there doing something stupid. It’s funny my mom owns 3 salons, and we never once talked
20 WWW.REVOLTSD.COM
Jeremy: It started about 3 years ago. I wanted to bring something different to San Diego, there are a lot of people that have condos downtown, but they don’t necessarily live here. So my idea was, when people came into town, they could come in and get there hair done, their make-up done, guys could come in and get styled up, clothing wise, or whatever. Then we could make them dinner reservation, get into a club, or pretty much what you’re looking for, we could handle all that, the all around Concierge piece of it. Hair, make-up, style, lifestyle, you want to go out, we handle all of it. I met Michael about two years ago; he was my assistant, fresh out of school, and wanted to assist me. The business that was in our location now, had failed, so the owner of the lease gave us the opportunity to come in and take over and see if we could do something with it. So we came in, and we were like look, if you have to come out of your pocket at all we’ll leave, since the day we started he hasn’t had to pay a dime. We’ve been in this location for a year and 4 months, we have learned a lot with in the first year. We just bought a building on 5th Ave. so hopefully by summer of 2010, we’ll be launching on 5th Ave. right between G & Market, the most walk street in San Diego. What possessed you to take on the project of Bikini Week? Jeremy: You know, we had a friend of ours approach us, because in the downtown area we are pretty much the go to salon for hair, make-up, for any type of shows, if you want us to produce the whole show with models, and everything, we will handle it. She wanted us to do a one night bikini fashion show and a local club, for us we’ve done a lot of that, and we’re trying to jump out of that, not do the whole club t-shirt shows anymore, just do more high fashion stuff, you know, stuff that you would never see in San Diego. So, Michael was talking to her about it, then it turned into a two day event over the weekend pool party fashion event, then it turned from 2-3, to 3-4, then next thing you know it was a 5 day Bikini Week. Michael looked all over the Internet for Bikini Week, and there has never been one, or even talked about, so we bought bikiniweeksandiego.com, LA, Miami, New York, we bought them all. In 12 weeks in went from a one night show to a week show, from the bottom up, from sponsors, to club owners, and talking to GM’s, and getting lighting right, and getting models, to model talent agencies, designers, hairstylist, make-up artist for a week, it was this whole big process. Michael has these crazy ideas; anytime something pops into his head he goes as far as he can go with it, because no never means no to Michael, so he doesn’t care, he’s like, just watch. He spearheaded this whole event to the fullest, and allowed us to get a team together, so we thought it would be a great opportunity, so we did it. The next thing we knew it was here, now it’s gone. We have actually been hit up to do a Bikini Week in Aspen, and in Miami. A little side note to the ladies, while I was at his salon to do the interview, he was working on a very lucky woman’s hair. All I have to say is, AMAZING!
MISS CHLOE VIXEN Interview With The Cover Girl & Dancer by Leslie Krouse
Watch out! There is a new dance company in town. San Diego’s sexy sensation, Vixen Inc. These 5 girls have hit the stage, dancing their way straight to the top, bringing a seductive flair to San Diego nightclubs. I sat down with Chloe to find out a little bit more about this talented, beautiful, and intelligent, business savvy entrepreneur. How did you get started in this business? Chloe: This has always been a passion of mine, I love to dance, and it just kind of fell into my lap. A few venues were asking me if I could bring in more girls, so it turned into this company. It was about 4 years ago, and I stopped to get into other things in this industry, like VIP hosting and bottle service, but I really did miss my passion a lot, so I decided to get back into it. Vixen started up again about a year ago, we were dancing at a place called Sutra in Orange County for about six months, but I didn’t want to drive so far from San Diego. Right now we have one home venue, which is Stingeree, we are there every Friday and Saturday, we also just took on another venue call Voyeur, and you can also catch us a Side Bar every now and then. Who is involved in the company? Chloe: We have 4 core girls, and we just took on another one. My head girl, actually she has kind of taken over for me, her name is Bronwyn LeAnn, she’s the blonde one, and she is awesome. My partner Nicolette Nightingale, and our two other girls are Janey, we call her Miss J, and Arielle, they are the two go to girls, but Nicolette, Bronwyn, and myself are the main girls. What can people expect to see at your performance? Chloe: We’re more professional performance dancers, which is different from Go-Go dancing, we have a choreographed routine, we are actually working on a few right now, which is more along the line of Burlesque. Our uniforms and outfits are inclined to be a little more out there, I guess that’s why we get so much recognition, off of the way we dress and the way we dance, I guess you could describe us as a Pussycat Dolls meets Coyote Ugly, that’s what makes us Vixen Inc. You also have your own clothing line, how did you get into this field? Chloe: We were making our own outfits, and we had our own style, and every time I went out people were asking what I was wearing. I decided to start my own clothing line, because I really like to make my own stuff, and I always want to wear what I made. So I started a clothing line called Tainted Entourage, but we had to change the name, because HBO came after us over the name Entourage, so it is now named Tainted Entropy, and Entropy means chaos. My best friend and business partner Nicolette Nightingale came on, and we started to graphic design, and do a bunch of cut and sew, and grommeting, we literally just finished everything. We are having a launch party on July 29th at Side Bar, it’s basically the launch of our look book and we sight which is www.taintedentropy.com. If you are interested in having these girls perform for your club or party, contact the @ www.myspace.com/vixeninc

EXIT PREDICTABLE
ENTER Mauilusurf.com The recent social networking craze has spawned several new noteworthy developments such as Facebook and Twitter. The rush to create similar models, coupled with the inherent trial and error process, has produced an even newer hybrid known as “niche” networking. Birthed primarily due to a consumer backlash against spam and irrelevant content (which is especially true in the surfing world where there are no large scale interactive venues where surfers can meet, chat, sell their gear and hang out), we proudly introduce, Mauilusurf.com. Designed by surfers for surfers, Mauilusurf.com has gone live with what it believes to be is the next frontier in the evolution of surfing culture. Josh White, a local surfer and part of the development team of Mauilusurf.com, not only has a passion for the local surfing community, but also shares a vision to bring something of extreme value to surfers all over the globe. Upon the site’s launch Josh stated, “This site is so cool. Earlier surveys prior to the launch of the Mauilusurf site indicated that there was a strong need for an instant interactive Facebook/Twitter type of setting to properly service the international surfing community.”
The team at Mauilsurf.com is creating the most powerful on-line surfing community – Things to watch out for include: A chat and status update function that allows surfers real time access to communicate and display real time surfing hot spot conditions An opportunity for members to opt into a revenue generating profile through Google Adsense that will pay you for clicks on ads on pages on your profile A section where surfers can advertise gear A dating section Mauilusurf members will be able to enjoy the expected general functions social networking such as: • Edit personal profile information • Upload photos in their photo gallery • Message one another • Befriend one another • Participate in the discussion forum • Add blog content to their profile In addition to this, the site gives access to a Craigslist-style classified section to advertise any gear, accommodation, lessons, etc.to all anyone who joins. Members will be able to earn cash with an AdSense, pay per click program as well, just for opening a profile and uploading, photos, content and videos. This is the only social networking site where people can actually make money by simply participating rather than the traditional model of an entity making money off its members. The thing that ultimately separates Mauilusurf.com from other social networking sites, is that it will be completely saturated in surf culture and crossover genres such as: skate culture, tattoo art and extreme sports. Mauilusurf is proud to be currently branded by the artwork of renowned graffiti artist and muralist; Aero. His colorful, fresh and exciting work appropriately expresses the contemporary and yet “retro” vibe of Mauilusurf and we look forward to bringing you more if this exceptionally talented, Hawaiian born, San Diego resident in the upcoming weeks of our launch. http://www.aerosolarts.com. Mauilusurf recently has struck up a relationship with Revolt In Style Magazine to sponsor the RSSS at Pacific Beach in San Diego over the summer. We plan to launch right where it happens; on the beaches where we can get direct and honest participation and input from the members of the surfing community. The name Maui Lu was chosen by the founder and CEO, Chris Rousselle for his incredibly innovative and unique action sports wear design (to be announced). The name comes from the fact that the original concept for Chris’s invention came to him on a beach in Maui. Chris is not a surfer, but along with a seasoned and successful career in company start ups, he has had a life-long admiration for the sport as well as the natural beauty of surf and wave culture. Chris has a strong mandate to the MauiLuSurf staff to: keep it real, strive to promote the protection of the natural surfing environment and to serve the community with humility and respect. “Working with the people at Revolt Magazine and some of the key members of the local surfing community has been a extremely rewarding and natural progression for Mauil Lu. We are proud to be a sponsor of the Revolt Summer Surf Series and to launch the site this summer in San Diego. I’ll see you on the beach. Stop by the tent and check us out”. Photo By Michael Crouch

COMPETITION
SEASON BEGINS FOR RSSS 3.0
TYLER NEWTON HAS A VERY, VERY GOOD DAY Photos By Michael Crouch
The days leading up to the Revolt Summer Surf Series had everyone involved in the annual event sweating bullets. The skies were constantly socked in with a heavy marine layer and the ocean resembled the shore of Lake Havasu. No waves in sight for days. But, on the morning of June 27th, a nice little south west swell hit just as the clouds broke and gave some 106 surfers some seriously fun, waist to chest high waves to test their skills. The competition was a huge success. Riders showed up from as far away as Costa Rico and Hawaii. The local, north county and OC talent showed up in record numbers to try their luck in winning a new Aviso Carbon Fiber Surfboard, cash and a lion’s share of some dope swag from all the great sponsors. Aerialist and all around water daredevil Josh Sleigh had the crowd in awe as they watched him and his team demonstrate his new ‘Winch’ tow-in system. Calsound.com was on hand with some great DJ’s supplying choice music all day to get everyone pumped & in the perfect mood. Surfrider Foundation and SD Coastkeepers organized a huge beach cleanup. Junkride finished up their 3000 mile bike ride from Canada and stopped in to help raise some awareness on the plastic trash building up in our oceans.
Gavin Sutherland, Eric McHenry and Dean Randazzo were charging hard all day, but it was Tyler Newton that had the best overall performance. He finished up the day with 200 bucks for 1st place in Airshow Division & 250 bucks for taking 1st in the Pro Am. On top of that he scored a new Aviso Carbon Fibre stick worth about 1300.00 courtesy of our presenting sponsor ‘Maui Lu’. Not bad for a days work. Big Wave Surfer and legendary waterman Scott Chandler was on hand to make sure the first ever Stand Up Paddle Division went off. Yeah, he won. Veteran Surf Pro and ex-rebel Richie Collins was there to compete and keep a watchful eye on
his little girl Meah. Young Meah continues the surf comp tradition by taking 4th in the open women’s division. Without a doubt the finest RSSS event to date. The Eco Friendly angle was a great way to tie some excellent surfing to a serious cause. Thanks to everyone that helped make the event a fantastic kick off to what should be a memorable season. The next event will be held on Saturday July 25th Crystal Pier PB. Meanwhile check out www.revoltsurfseries.com for more photos and video. Log on www.mauilusurf & register to win a new ‘custom art’ Channel Island surfboard.

TOM ATENCIO In A League Of His Own Photos By Bo Cross
Tom Atencio, Vice President of Affliction Entertainment, is a hardhitting entrepreneur. Whether unleashing guerilla tactics when marketing a clothing line or pitting the world’s toughest fighters against each other in the ring, his street smart approach to business has led considerably to the success of Affliction, as well as to his own personal triumphs. This no holds barred business acumen has led him to a lofty position at one of the most successful clothing brands in the market today, as well as being the face and fist behind the company’s MMA fight division, Affliction Entertainment. Gracing the cover of Entrepreneur Magazine’s May 2009 issue, Tom Atencio is at the top of his game, a heavyweight in a league of his own. In person Atencio appears the affable, easy-going guy down the street who you’d expect to find riding his motorcycle to the beach on a Saturday afternoon. He loves to surf, laughs easily, is relatively soft spoken and a friend to many. His good looks, made bad boy by tattoos and a shaved head, are tempered by a carefree smile, a light-hearted laugh and a steady temperament. When attacked in the press, by rival fight leagues, or harsh critics belying his success, he shrugs it off, knowing it is part of the price for stepping outside the bounds of the ordinary. Atencio joined Affliction four years ago at the company’s inception. His early duties included graphic design, and photography, but catapulted alongside the growth of the company. Having trained as a fighter from a very early age, Atencio was friends with many of the fighters and recognized MMA as a synergistic mix for the edgy clothing brand. After first signing notable fighters for signature series shirts, Atencio and Affliction took a major step and began to promote fights on their own. Atencio headed up the effort and became an advocate for the sport as well as the spokesperson for the company. No stranger to the press, Atencio has been the centerpiece of many feature articles, has appeared on countless sports shows, radio shows and television shows and when promoting a fight is barraged by a constant stream of interviews for months at a time. He takes it all in stride, conveying a refreshing honesty and genuine congeniality. Atencio, a southern California native was born in 1967. One of six children, he credits his early fight training to the need for self defense from his combative siblings. As his expertise developed, he fought for Total Combat in Tijuana, Mexico and recently fought in Biloxi, MS on June 27th for “Ultimate Chaos.” In addition, Atencio is an accomplished sports photographer, with numerous photos published in Ultimate Athletes Magazine. In his spare time he enjoys running on the beach and riding one of his two motorcycles.
RIS: The caliber of fighters that you have brought into the ring is pretty incredible, how did you go about getting these guys? Tom: It really wasn’t that difficult, I have a lot of good relationships with a lot of good fighters. It was a situation where we sponsored a lot of them, like Josh Barnett, and Fedor Emelianenko. I had spoken with Fedor and met with him, then we started sponsoring him, and then we started talking about him coming to fight for our organization. It just worked out really well; it wasn’t as difficult as most people would think. But, getting to this point was difficult, especially with the 3rd fight coming up, it’s been a lot of work, so when I say it’s been difficult, I just mean it’s been a lot of work. RIS: You teamed up with Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions, how did you guys come about working together? Tom: We met to discuss doing product for them. We actually partnered on the Ring Magazine t-shirts, which we manufacture for them. It worked out with the fight promotion, we needed their help, so we spoke with them about that, turned out they were interested in getting into the MMA anyway. So, they partnered up with us and it’s been good. They have a lot of knowledge, and they have a lot of background history, and they are one of the greatest organizations in Boxing, once again right place, right time. RIS: I’m a big Boxing and MMA fan, and this last fight you ran a Boxing match across town at the same time as the MMA fight. Is there ever a possibility of combining the two, I understand timing between the two would be difficult, but is there a chance? TOM: We planned on doing that in the beginning; there are smaller organizations that do it. But, I think right now, there is still that disconnect between the two, because there are still hard core boxing fans, and hard core MMA fans, and there are very few that like both together. One of the biggest difficulties is the 12 rounds in boxing versus the 3 or 5-minute rounds in MMA. In boxing you have 10-3 minute or 12-3 minute rounds. So, I think that’s the difficulty, especially when it comes to television, it’s really hard to time it. I mean, if it’s a boxing match and it goes 3 rounds, or a 1st round knock-out, then you could put an MMA fight on, but it might run short, or if it’s a 12 round fight, it may run long, and then you might not be able to get in all the MMA fights. There are a lot of difficulties that are still involved. RIS: So how about not running them at the same time, so that I can watch both, just for me? TOM: Now that’s always and option, if you want it, we can make that happen? RIS: How do you see Affliction’s future in MMA, do you think there will ever be one big league?
TOM: No, I don’t think so, there are already so many different leagues. With us, we work with everybody, so it’s good, we try to build bridges, and not burn them, and we try to work with every organization that is willing to work with us. We are already working with Scott Coker of Strikeforce, we also work with Monte Cox and Adrenaline, we are partnered with MM1 Global, and of coarse Golden Boy Promotions, so for us, it’s all about building bridges, and relationships, and trying to move forward. We also started working with HDNET, which has become a great partner of ours, and now we’re working with Showtime pay per view. We are just trying to advance the sport, more so then just trying to hold it for us. RIS: So, what possessed you to get back in the ring? TOM: You know, I’ve wanted to, since the first time I fought over four years ago. It’s either now, or never. I have faith in my trainers, and as long as I do everything they ask, I’ll go out there and win. RIS: Do you have any specialties? TOM: No, I like to think I’m a well-rounded fighter. I think you need to know everything; you need to know ground, stand-up, Western boxing, Muay Thai, and Jujitsu. It’s just a matter of combining them all and making yourself strong, maybe in one aspect, but fighting your fight. RIS: Lets talk about Scott Smith, I watch his fights just to see what he is going to say next about you? TOM: He loves to mess with me. I’m actually glad he lost his last fight, because he said he had another one. I heard he was going to call me into the ring and give me a hard time. Scott and I have this little thing going on, he just loves to mess with me, everybody loves to mess with me. I’ll be with Fedor and we’ll be taking pictures together and he’ll slap the back of my head, and Tim Silvia will run up and knee me in the thigh. I was the youngest in my family, so I’ve always been a bit of a smart-ass, so I think that makes people want to mess with me. So far Scott has said that I had a belly button ring infection, he said that I went to Canada and married my life partner Lance, that I was his personal masseuse at his fight with Benji Radach, and then if he would have won his last fight he was going to say that I had tattooed my boyfriends name on my back, or whatever, he was going to call me up to the ring knowing that I wouldn’t lift my shirt to prove him wrong. RIS: Are you going to reciprocate any of these actions? TOM: I’ve been thinking about it, but the truth is that Scott got a tattoo with his trainers name Ganyao on his shin, I guess I would say he professed his love to Ganyao, he finally came out of the closet. (Side Note: Tom won his fight on June 27, 2009 beating Randy Hedderick by TKO in a back-and-forth fight that Atencio has every right to be proud of winning).
RIS: How did you get started with the clothing line? Tom: Todd and Eric my partners they started Affliction, and then they brought Cliff, Courtney, and myself on board. I think this was just a great team that came together and it worked out perfectly. All the stars aligned, it was the right place, right time. It’s amazing we started with 6 employees and it has now moved up to over 130 right now, things are great. RIS: How is the clothing line doing, has the recession hit you at all? Tom: We are still doing really well, and we’re growing. It definitely has slowed down, but we have a great following and a great base. People are very loyal, and we are real happy about that. I can’t thank the fans enough that have stood behind the brand and supported it along the way. We wouldn’t be where we are today without them. RIS: Now rumor has it that the reason you got into the MMA is because the UFC wouldn’t let the fighters wear your shirts, is there some truth to that? Tom: Yeah, that’s part of it, we were band by the UFC, and none of the fighters were allowed to wear our product into the ring anymore, so because of that we decided to start our own organization. It’s wasn’t necessarily the only reason we started, basically we wanted to support the fighters, that were supporting us, they are the ones that got us to where we were. It was a situation where we never really planned on doing it, it just kind of happened that way; it’s definitely, all good.

SOUND BITES
TURNING THE TABLES TO THEIR OWN BEAT by Leslie Krouse
The Glitch Mob is a three man musical collaboration with roots from New Orleans, San Francisco and Los Angeles. What initially started as a joke/loose affiliation soon stuck as edIT, Boreta, and Ooah found themselves frequently playing the same shows and eventually tag teaming during back-to-back time slots. This eventually led to the three man sonic onslaught of ferocious bass, head cracking drums and infinitely complex rhythms. A proverbial Voltron effect on stage. Taking influences from hip-hop, experimental, and dance genres, The Glitch Mob have crafted their own form of futuristic dance floor hip-hop that has been “slaying” audience’s worldwide. Their live sets reinvent the dj “tag-team” concept with three performers onstage at once, interacting like a jazz combo, each taking the lead at intuitive moments, interweaving their own sounds, and remixing everything on the fly. The result is a sound distinctly their own, blending the deep head nod of hip-hop with serious bass music, throwing genre distinctions out the window. The Glitch Mob has been one of the cornerstones of this new electronic hip-hop movement that has emerged from Glasgow to Montreal and back to Los Angeles. Taking a nod from the resurgence in the instrumental hip-hop “beats” movement; the Glitch Mob has injected a great sense of dance floor sensibility into the scene and crafted their own niche as new school dance floor destroyers. I hopped on the phone with Josh Mayer aka Ooah to see what’s up with the Mob. RIS: The Glitch Mob has seem to have taken the art of being a DJ to the next level, how does The Glitch Mob generate such a unique vibe? Ooah: The process has been a continuous evolution of us learning more about how to perform live electronic DJ music, without being the typical DJ, and without being essentially a band with real instruments, but being able to cross both of these worlds in a unique way. When we started we were just DJing tracks with each other, and rotating in between sets. Now we play 50% of the set live off of lemurs, mpt’s and drum pads. It’s just been this crazy evolution. RIS: People accuse DJ’s of not being musician, because they don’t perform with traditional instruments, how do you respond to that? Ooah: I honestly could care less about what other people think. We are all musicians in the group, I’ve been playing drums for well over eight years now, and I play the piano, and acoustic guitar, and the same thing for the other guys. We are working on a new album, and we have incorporated instruments into it. We have always used instruments; you may not be able to tell what it is because we do so much
processing with the audio. I’m a musician, I’m a DJ, I just make music with my computer. I know people like to say, DJ’s can’t play an instrument that’s why they just play records, but I don’t look at myself, or the other two guys in the group as traditional DJ’s anymore, maybe at one point in our life we were just DJing just playing vinyl record, but we have all really evolved musically, our skill level, the way we think about music, instruments, everything, to where we are at now. We have no rules or regulations, if one of the guys wants to pick up and electric guitar and do a waling guitar solo, because he feels like that going to be the coolest, next level stuff we’re working on, then we all embrace it, we’re down, we’re open to any ideas, we’re not closing ourselves off to anything. Who knows 5 years from now The Glitch Mob could be playing bass, guitar, and drums, because that’s what it evolved to, but I seriously doubt it, I’m just saying we’re open to anything; there is nothing traditional about us. RIS: You’ve been creating your style since you where 16, what made you decide to become a DJ? Ooah: I grew up in New Orleans, so I would go out and find these underground raves. I was very much into punk music, hard core, and the underground thrashy New Orleans grind core stuff. I would go to these venues to see the shows, and when it was over, they would wheel in the sound systems, and the DJ’s would show up, and all these ravers would show up. I was intrigued by it; I had never really seen anything like it before. I remember, I stuck around the French Quarter and waited for everything to get going, it just blew my mind, I had never heard anything like it. I grew up listing to punk, and rock, and the Beatles from my parents, so when I heard some deep weird trance house music for the first time, I was like snap, what is that. I just started going to the raves down in New Orleans, it was like a really dirty, grimy, pretty messed up scene down there. There was a lot of drugs, and a lot of kids, super underground illegal style. That really got me excited about the whole thing; it was like a whole new little culture that I didn’t even know existed. After going to that for a couple of years, the music really grew on me, I really want to be making this kind of music. When I first heard electronic music I knew that I wanted to figure out how to make this sound, I knew it wasn’t any traditional form of drums, or guitar bass, I wanted to know how do you create something like that, computer, keyboards, synthesizer, or whatever, I just knew I wanted to figure it out. RIS: What can we expect to see at your show? Ooah: You can expect to see something you have never seen before. One of our main goals as far as the live show is concerned is to really turn it into something that’s completely different than even the music you’re going to buy of ours. It’s going to have the same elements and vibe, but it’s like fresh takes on our tracks. We have a great vibe and work together in sink, I think people will be really impressed.

call it progressive-soul twang meets indie-melodic acoustic) Writer: I like your description, just add the word “blazing” in there some where. RIS: Andy, could you indulge us as to an explanation for the “Dracula Sucks” signature sticker on your acoustic guitar that even makes its way onto the album cover of Blood Drops? Writer: A friend found that sticker at a thrift store in Hawaii. I liked the way it looked and asked him if I could have it. RIS: You fellas have some big shows coming up this summer. Where are you headed? Where can we see you around these parts? Writer: July 4th we played a party at the El Rio in San Fransisco.... great club. July 25th we are playing at the Beauty Bar in San Diego with our good buddies Swim Party. In August we are playing The Fling’s tour kick off show at the Prospector in Long Beach. RIS: How do you feel the San Diego music scene is progressing? Is it becoming a more conducive place for musicians to start a career without having to flee for the City of Angels?
WRITER
Writer: Hmmmm, well LA is very enticing.... almost every band we know from LA moved there and instantly blew up. But those same bands still can’t book a show in San Diego. It’s weird. San Diego’s got something cool going on right now and everyone wants to get on the band wagon.
North Park’s Finest
RIS: What other local bands are you into? Who do you like to play with?
by Brendan Foote Photo By Blair Robb
North Park, recognizable by its vintage welcome sign affectionately draped over 30th Street on University, has gained significant notoriety as an emerging mecca for art enthusiasts and exceedingly talented musicians, though it remains tucked away alongside Balboa Park, outside of downtown San Diego. Those who reside or frequent this organic town will definitely attest to its character, though for them, it is no new development. North Park has been freckled with many of San Diego’s more renowned music venues, emerging art galleries, trendy restaurants, coffee shops and bars for some time now. It was within this shiny spot on the face of San Diego that we were able to sit down and chat with the boys from Writer, one of North Park’s finest musical products. Spending some time with Andy (vocals, guitar), James (drums), David (guitar) and Dagart (bass) gave us increased insight as to why they are making such waves in the San Diego music scene. The band is relatively young, originating in the Spring of 2006, but they have gained the loyalty of a very dedicated grass-roots following that has seemingly blossomed into an eclectic crowd that pack their shows. Like the town that produced them, the guys from Writer have a very ‘real’ feel to them. They write music with meaning, they share beers with friends and fans after shows, they put their hearts into every performance and put on captivating shows. As modest as they come, Writer doesn’t bloat its rising success. A band that measures its success by the impact they have on those who enjoy their music will never site awards or album sales as their credentials for stardom. Simply put, as long as Writer continues to produce great music, the rest will follow. Here is what the guys had to say in response to our enthusiastic interrogation. RIS: We have to start off by inquiring about the name, ‘Writer’ and its subtle absurdity. Its almost what you would see on a business card as a title, although I doubt many writers have business cards. Does the name carry any specific story or renowned meaning? Writer: It’s completely absurd but totally fitting in a couple of ways: yes we write songs, lyrics, emails, and rent checks. So do a lot of other people we know. It’s just another band name that we really liked and thought would be perfect for the music we write. RIS: We are claiming you (selfishly) as a San Diego band, but I know you used to play quite a few shows in LA. What led to the ultimate homage back to San Diego to grace our venues

with your music? Was the move to be closer to your homes? Or did you feel like San Diego was more suited for the music you were producing? Writer: Writer has always been a San Diego based band. During 2006 our drummer Matt Fredrich was living in LA going to film school. We got to rehearse and record our first record “Cover Your Tracks” in a real cool film studio, but portions were also recorded at Andy’s apartment in Point Loma, and still more of “Cover Your Tracks” was recorded at a house in Chula Vista. Our very first show we played in San Diego, but soon started playing out of town. We met friends in Long Beach and more friends in LA, and have spent a lot of late nights in both cities. RIS: Biologically speaking (though I am not a scientist), there is some brotherly love in Writer. Andy and Jayme, as brothers, have you always enjoyed musical family fusion? Have your musical endeavors ever led you away from one another only to find you back playing together again? Writer: Although we played in separate bands all through high school it always seemed to work a little bit better even when we were just playing Weezer covers in my bedroom... guitar and drums, and that’s it. We were recently asked how our song writing process goes, and it came out as, we just end up telling each other how to play each other’s instruments and how the songs should sound. RIS: 2008 was definitely not a recessionary year for Writer the band. You were nominated as SDMA’s Best New Artist of the Year and you released a positively acclaimed album named Blood Drops. Was the local music scene just starting to accept the fact that you guys were putting together some excellent tunes and captivating live performances, or was it a year of strong development for the band? Writer: We played a whole lot in 2008. We released a cool record (in my opinion), played out of town a bunch, and spent hundreds of hours in our garage making sure our songs sounded good. It all helped. RIS: When a bands music genre is not clear cut, fancy music critics and writers love to show off their adjective pool in aims to define the undefinable. What’s most important is what kind of music the band itself is wanting to play and put out there. How would you classify Writer’s music? (Personally, I would
Writer: Playing with Swim Party is always a pleasure and feels really grass roots, everything from booking our own shows, printing and putting up our own posters, and playing for our friends and fans. We are playing for Tape Deck Mountain’s vinyl release show soon. I think they are a pretty cool band and are good friends of ours. Boomsnake is cool. Joel P. West and his band are good. The Paddle Boat is also cool. RIS: Other than playing some much demanded shows this summer, is there any studio time on the calendar? Writer: We recently recorded a few songs, start to finish, at Earthling Studio with Mike Kamoo. I think soon we are going to take some time off from playing shows to sit around and tell each other how to play each others instruments and hopefully come out with some new songs to record. That will happen in September.... the first month off from playing shows in a long long time. RIS: You guys have a very strong local following, fans that seem to flock to every show you play at spots like The Soda Bar, The Whistle Stop and the amazing Luce Loft Sezio Series back in late March. What does it mean, for a band that is climbing the ladder, to have such a strong roots following? Writer: It means everything to us when people coming to our shows. We’ve gotten to know a lot of people in town and out of town as well... great people. It’s refreshing to meet people who actually like to see live music, and it’s even better when someone wants to buy us a drink at a show! Oh and Live at the Luce Loft was a really cool thing. Every time we see Zack from Sezio we ask him what the next cool thing is gonna be. RIS: In San Diego, what’s your favorite restaurant? Place to get a coffee? Place to get a record? Place to mellow out? Writer: I love the Whistle Stop, Spacecraft Gallery, Krakatoa, El Camino for taco Tuesday, and the Casbah. From all of us here at Revolt, we encourage you to keep your eye out for these guys. They put out a great EP in 2008 entitled Blood Drops which, along with their other albums, is available wherever good music is sold. THE SKAINS Skank It
by Dave Woods
FINE TUNED MUSIC & CUISINE
Let me have the most wonderful pleasure of introducing everyone to The Skains. Believe me when I say, that you will definitely remember the name the second you hear these wonder kids jam! The Skains spawn from generations of roots, rock, and reggae, and the “roots” definitely run deep with Gavin and Zion Garcia.
TRAPT TRAPT
STILL HEADSTRONG Trapt’s number one success ‘Headstrong’ was the epitome of empowerment “Headstrong I’ll take you on, Headstrong I’ll take on anyone”, I would play this song on my way to work, it just seemed to give me that little extra nudge that I needed to go kick-ass. To my amazement this was nearly 8 years ago. Where did they go? What happened to this band? I mean they where pretty good, right? Well, they did move forward and have made a couple albums since. Trapt makes melodic hard rock that leans heavily on metal-tinged guitar riffs and soaring choruses. Based out of Los Angeles, the quartet, led by frontman Chris Taylor Brown, formed in 1997 in San Jose. Trapt have gone through several lineup changes, although the constants in the group have been Brown and bassist Peter Charell. The band toured for several years, putting out self-released material in the hopes of attracting label interest.

Finally in 2001, Trapt signed to Warner Bros. Trapt’s first album, simply titled Trapt, was released the following year, featuring guitarist Simon Ormandy and drummer Aaron Montgomery, who became the band’s permanent drummer after several players came and went. Trapt enjoyed platinum sales, thanks to the steady airplay of “Headstrong” and “Still Frame,” which both went to No. 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. The band’s brand of hard rock occasionally incorporated elements of rap-rock and thrash, while the single “Echo” demonstrated a penchant for moody mid-tempo ballads. 2005’s Someone in Control didn’t match Trapt’s chart success and was also less distinctive musically. Part of the problem might have been Trapt’s evolution into a polished hard rock band that had smoothed down its rough edges, which were part of the band’s early charm. Someone in Control felt calculated and professional, although the single “Stand Up” possessed the fire of Trapt’s debut. Warner Bros. and Trapt parted ways after Someone in Control. The band later signed with Eleven Seven, the label of Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx. Trapt’s first record for Eleven Seven was 2007’s Live!, a collection of concert performances and two new studio songs, “Stay Alive” and “Everything to Lose.” In August 2008, Trapt released their third studio album, ‘Only Through The Pain’. The record was the band’s first with new guitarist Robb Torres. Highlighted by more power ballads than earlier offerings, Only Through the Pain also made room for reggae rhythms and Policestyle melodies. The first single, “Who’s Going Home With You Tonight?,” was a hit on rock radio, and the album peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard album chart. Trapt has also ventured into the world of social networking by starting their own site, you can build your own page, add blogs, photo’s, and chat with other Trapt fans, you can log on at www.onlythroughthepain.com. They have recently begun a headlining tour promoting the new album, be sure to catch them at Anthology on July 24th.....
Gavin lead vocalist is 16 and all around stud muffin, he embraces his genre, and captures this new age demographic like a welcomed role model, leading the youth to skanking good times! Zion is the youngest member of the band at the tender age of 13, and could possibly be one of the best saxophone players I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing, and mind you, he is only thirteen. Jack McNeil, Bassist, and the oldest member at 17. This guy throws bass lines out like funky “Flea” of the RHCP. And then there is the talented Ben Wasserman a 15 year old that beats up on the skins. Inspired from a Sublime filled, Pepper stuffed youth you can hear their influences in the smooth melodic rhythm that The Skains live, breathe and embrace like a cherished Rastafarian medallion (which may have been worn by Peter Tosh, or Bob himself) The Skains are going places, bling-bling! Speaking of spawning a great lineage blood line, The Skains, ain’t no scrubs. Rob Garcia, the boy’s Father, has a long lineage of basically kicking major ass! Personal fitness trainer, and all around bad ass, Rob has the pleasure of kicking the asses’ of the likes of people such as: The “Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya, UFC destroyer Diego Sanchez, all around Hawaiian bad asses Sunny Garcia, Kalani Robb, and Makua Rothman. So you can understand that The Skains have the talent surrounding them that will push them to limitless success. I know for sure that one day the limelight of the future youth musical movement, and the “new generation” will surely embrace The Skains, The Garcia Family, and the overall Aloha spirit that their music leaves the lucky listener with, will stand the test of time. RIS: Hey guys, howz it? Any surf today, jam session, band practice? Skains: Yeah todays so sick beachin it all day for sure. Acoustic jamsesh on the boardwalk, made $20 haha. RIS: What really inspires The Skains music, to make it sound so amazing, for basically being four kids not even out of High School yet? Skains: We all listen to a wide variety of music, and it definitely all goes into one big blender sex of our music. RIS: How will the band try to stay motivated through growing pains, artistic differences, school, girlfriends, surfing, and the like? Skains: Well were all good friends, skains, and have been for awhile so its pretty easy for us all to get along. Plus, were having Gavin breakup with his girlfriend as she tends to need more attention than there are hours in the day haha. RIS: What would be the craziest, or funniest thing that has ever happened to The Skains while playing a show? Skains: We had Willie Fleming from Bucket of Fish play trombone with us at a show and he showed up in a dinosaur costume. RIS: Finally, this is a chance to give a big shout out to anyone that has help molded you boys, and have pushed you to become a rising talent in the local music scene. Anyone you guys would like to thank for the support? Skains: Definitely Mom and Dad for letting us practice here at the house in mission all the time, Grandma for being the equipment sponsor, and our friends: Joe Hart, Julian Fox, Max Wasserman, Nick Martinez, Fuzz Wagner, KG, Spencer Shneider, and Alexis Johnson, all of them have contributed to our music or just been there to support us at all times so we wanna give them a big THANK YOU!
BEDOUIN SOUNDCLASH Blame Canada by Leslie Krouse
This Toronto based duo Jay Malinowski (vocals, guitar) and Eon Sinclair (bass) have been creating music that embodies each of their personal and diverse musical preferences, creating their own innovative fusion of Reggae, Rock, Punk and Soul for almost 9 years now, and it seems their time has come. Catching the ear of No Doubt, and then being swept up to open for them, which is proving to be one of the biggest concerts of the year. They are no strangers to success winning Canada’s version of the Grammy Awards, Bedouin won the 2006 Juno Award for Best New Group. Unlike most musicians who try to mimic their musical idols, Bedouin Soundclash forges their own musical path. I spoke with Eon on the phone to find out more about this interesting story.
are creatively right now. It’s been great so far, the response has been amazing, and we are looking forward to continuing to develop this style with these fellows. RIS: You guys have been working on a new album, are you going to be incorporating these new sounds into the new album? EON: Yeah, I think so. One thing we are being very conscientious of this year, is taking time to really make sure we are saying something
RIS: How are things going so far? EON: Great, we’ll be starting the first two shows with No Doubt both in our home town Toronto, and our home away from home Montreal, so those are both really great and comfortable shows. Now we’re doing a little stretch of shows in New York CIty tonight which is always fun and exciting, it’s great. RIS: How was it to find out that your band got stuck in Tony’s head of No Doubt, and the next thing you’re on tour? EON: Pretty cool, it’s awesome. It’s always really nice and appreciated, when a musician that you respect and has earned a certain degree of success, takes an interest in your band at all, let alone such an interest that they want to take you out on the road, it’s incredible. Especially when you have a year where you haven’t really released anything, we just have a little EP that we just released, and you know you’re coming to the end of one album cycle, so for such a big band to do a 5 year reunion tour, and to reach out to a band like ours, that is still just emerging and that people are just starting to hear about is amazing, it’s incredible.
RIS: What is Bedouin Soundclash all about, are you rock, reggae, tell us who is Bedouin? Eon: I think Bedouin means a lot of different idea’s and things. It’s more of a cultural band, than lets say, a rock band, or any specific type of band. We grew up in Toronto, and in Vancouver, and in Canada, where there is some many different types of ethnicities, co-existing in a way that you take an interest in learning about other people’s cultures. That’s the primary reason we started the band was because we all had different kinds of cultural interests that intersected, but nobody was exploring those ideas musically. So, the ideas of reggae and punk, and folk, and world, and electronic music all have their intersection points, but there aren’t to many bands that are really trying to blend all these sounds constantly, that’s kind of what Bedouin Soundclash is all about. RIS: Your drummer Pat Pengelly left the band back in January, how has that changed the dynamics of the band, and are you planning on replacing him? EON: We have now started playing with a different drummer named Marco, who’s a great drummer, we’ve also for this particular tour, we have been working with a Trumpet player and a saxophone player. So the dynamics in the band have changed quite a bit. The roots of the band and the crux of how we write our songs, and the message we are trying to get across is the exact same way. I think what it has done is afforded us the opportunity to explore a couple of different styles that these guys are a little more familiar with, they come from a little bit more of a jazz and hip hop soul background, so I think it’s made our sound a little more soulful that way. I’m not saying it’s any better, but I am saying it’s a different thing, it speaks more to where Jay and myself
that sounds new to us. That’s always been the beginning and ending for us, it has to be interesting, and exciting, and new for us. It takes time to think about how we can incorporate some of these ideas, and what other things we might be interested in incorporating, because we have the time to actually investigate a lot of different options. I’m sure that, yeah, this will definitely be something that is part of our next recording process. I’m not sure how much presences the hip-hop soul sound will be, but I’m sure we will have some songs that will lean on these ideas. RIS: I’m looking forward to show coming up on July 30 at the Belly Up, can we expect to see the new line up? EON: Yeah, I’m looking forward coming down there, it’s been awhile since we’ve played in San Diego. I’m really excited with this new line up, I think fans of the band will be really impressed, and I think people that don’t know us will also be excited to see something different coming from Canada.

CD REVIEWS
HEAR THIS Music Editor Leslie Krouse Album reviews by : Brendan Foote
Editor’s Pick - Hotel St George - City Boy Lemon Genre - indie rock Well, HSG has outdone themselves with the new album City Boy Lemon. They seem to have grown, and meshed as a band, polishing their sound, and taking it to the next level. While the upbeat pop textures of Yippee!!! somewhat pales in comparison to the Indie-rock beat of City Boy Lemon, this is proving to be their best album yet. Adding to the mix of pounding drums, singing guitars, strong bass, is a voice reminiscent of the great Bowie. Matt Binder (lead vocals). Brian Reily (guitar, keyboard, vocals), Erik Visnyak (bass, vocals), and Simon Leader (drums), came together in December of 2007. They released their first ep titled Yippee!!! which was nomination at the San Diego Music Awards, for Best New Band, and for Best Alternative Album. In November, they released a second ep titled Hundreds & Thousands. Then In February of this year they signed on with a new little label from LA called, This Is Tightrope. Their debut LP called City Boy Lemon coming out on vinyl, and digital download in August. Four songs off the album have been licensed to the Mtv show called, The City, which will start airing new episodes in the fall. Some of the stand out tunes on the album are, the whimsical Apples & Pear, this song has a great beat with a catchy tune, also Welcome to the Sun, and the Good in the Bad. Be sure to come and check them out August 8th at the Beauty Bar.
Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest Genre – Indie Rock This Brooklyn based quartet has been fixated on creating a faultless album for some time now and Veckatimest is the result of their tireless efforts. Though musical perfection is seemingly unattainable, Grizzly Bear’s focus on the details have pushed them to explore all ends of their musical abilities. Forget the simple power chord or standard drum-beat, all notes and progressions have been sequentially connected in hybrid strands of musical variance, thus creating an album with an eclectic collection of songs. From the catchy key-line of the album’s single “Two Weeks” to the acoustical bliss of the album opener “Southern Point”, Grizzly Bear showcases their ability to produce a multitude of sounds. Their signature distorted whip-crack guitar riffs resonate in “Cheerleader” and “While You Wait For The Others” whilst throughout the entire album the band exposes their cunning vocal harmonies. The album was released on May 26, 2009 and was a much anticipated second full-length from the band and this month’s Revolt “must have, must listen.”
Discovery – Discovery LP Genre – Electronic/Pop Wes Miles, front man for Ra Ra Riot and Rostam Batmanglij, keys specialist for Vampire Weekend have teamed up in a compelling collaboration to bring us a series of jams just in time for the summer. The two New York musicians, who were coincidentally members of two of 2008’s hottest bands, released their first LP on July 7th in the US. The self-titled album was released on XL Recordings (Vampire Weekend’s label). The album is suited for summer merriment with contagious synth beats, re-mixed samples and a myriad of piano jams. Key tracks, “Orange Shirt” and “Osaka Loop Line” accentuate Miles R&B range while allowing Rotham some experimental freedom with the electro-beats and instrumentals. The album is boosted by vocal contributions from Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig and Dirty Projectors’ Angel Deradoorian. If that’s not enough, in a both timely and tributary manner, the album also features a mesmerizing Jackson 5 cover “I Want You Back (In Discovery)”.
Sunset Rubdown – Dragonslayer Genre – Indie Rock We can all appreciate the fact the Spencer Krug, lead-singer, keys and guitarist for Sunset Rubdown, is a work-a-holic. Krug has his hands in several exquisite musical cookie jars; Wolf Parade, Swan Lake, Frog Eyes and Sunset Rubdown, to name a few. Dragonslayer, which was released June 23, 2009, is the band’s follow up to Random Spirit Lover (2007), their first LP with new label JagJaguwar (that also houses such acts as Bon Iver and Dinosaur Jr.). The album is instinctually Krug’s most complex work integrating layers of distorted guitars, pianos and various percussions with high gain. Sunset Rubdown wastes no time captivating its listeners with the album’s opening tune “Silver Moons” whose lyrics draw on eternal reflection through Krug’s soulful singing over the echoing drum line reminiscent of a marching cavalry. The album closes with a juxtaposed ballad, over ten minutes in length, emphasizing Krug’s imaginative and inspired creationism through “Dragon Lair”.
Dinosaur Jr. – Farm Genre – Alternative Rock Following a ten-year album production hiatus (1997 to 2007), Dinosaur Jr. (which was once Dinosaur) broke silence with Beyond (2007) which was initially received with mixed feelings by those who fancied themselves alt-rock aficionados. For anyone who thought this was a one-time “told-you-so” comeback album, the release of Farm on June 23, 2009 put those thoughts to rest. The distorted, high feedback formula that had personified the band in the late 80’s and early 90’s simply needed its original components to regain its footing. J Masics, Murph and Lou Barlow were finally re-united and throwing down tracks like it was 1986 and Sonic Youth was picking them up to tour or it was ‘92 and Cobain was telling people that this band rocked. The album stylistically continues to feature Masics’ melting solos, Barlow’s high-gain, low-tone bass lines and some really excellent song writing. Dinosaur Jr. is clearly far from extinct.
Dirty Projectors – Bitte Orca Genre – Indie/Experimental Rock June 9th saw the release of Dirty Projectors latest album, Bitte Orca (2009) on Domino. The album is a vocal showcase led by Dave Longstreth, but also highlighting the synchronized harmonies of Angel Deradoorian, Haley Dekle and Amber Coffman, who seemingly hit all the right notes. Sprinkle a nearly untouchable vocal range with precision acoustic guitar sequences and stuttered drum beats and you have yourself a masterful musical collection from this Brooklyn super-group. The DP’s were also featured on the indie compilation album Dark Was The Night (2009) in a collaboration with David Byrne that garnered heavy enthusiasm. This album maintains a worldly feel derived from an array of musical influences further complimenting Longstreth’s musical direction and the éclat of this album. Thanks to all of you that sent in CDs! The response has been ridiculously overwhelming. I have so many CD’s to choose from each month and only space enough for 5 or 6 each issue. If your CD didn’t get reviewed yet don’t think that your music sucks. It just means I haven’t gotten to it yet. If you got talent, we’ll showcase it. Send your CD and Bio C/O Leslie Krouse, Revolt In Style Magazine, P.O Box 9771, San Diego, CA 92169 and you just might end up in the next issue of Revolt In Style Magazine. Keep sending in your music and we’ll keep promoting it.

THE ZOMBIE RISING Are You Ready For The Zombie Apocalypse? By Beth Accomando
If you woke up one morning and found yourself in the midst of a zombie outbreak where would you go? “Well a lot of people will say mall,” says Kevin Workman, “And then somebody played the trump card and said Costco. And then a bunch of engineers said wait a minute where does Costco get their stuff from they must have super distribution centers.” Workman is an IT architect and an X-Sanguin organizer of the off-site zombie bash during this summer’s Comic-Con. Each year X-Sanguin throws an after party with a different theme. This year X-Sanguin VIII and Freaks Night Out celebrate the zombie on Saturday July 25 at the Spin Night Club. Workman says people have a tendency to go all out on costumes and “zombies are very post apocalyptic.” Zombies are also all the rage at the moment. Borders has a whole wall devoted to zombie literature ranging from “The Zombie Survival Guide” to “Zombie Haiku” to “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.” George A. Romero didn’t invent zombies but his 1968 film “Night of the Living Dead” provided a mythology that’s held fast in our popular culture. That mythology posits that when there’s no more room in hell the dead will walk the earth; if you get bit by one of these undead you become infected and will want to eat human flesh; and the only way to stop a zombie is to remove the head or destroy the brain. You can find zombie movies in every decade and in dozens of countries. Workman says zombies have lasted so long because they “are the clay directors work with. The first post-apocalyptic zombie movie was ‘Night of the Living Dead’ by George Romero and that was a big pointed conversation about racism and classism. And then George went on to do ‘Dawn of the Dead,’ which had to do with a mall and had to do with consumerism. And then you even have something as recent as ‘Dead Set’ out of the UK that was all about obsession with celebrity. And as individuals I think we can respond to it because people are drawn to post apocalyptic movies.” And that brings us to the latest entry in the zombie genre and the first ever zombie film from Norway, “Dead Snow,” and it’s undead horde of Nazi zombies. That’s right the dead are rising and they’re all members of the Third Reich. If you play video games then you’re probably aware of the Nazi zombies in Call of Duty: World at War. But what you might not know is that Nazi zombies are nothing new. There were underwater Nazi zombies in a French piece of horror erotica called “Zombie Lake” back in the eighties. But “Dead Snow” takes Nazi zombies to new heights… or depths depending on your point of view. Director Tommy Wirkola grew up on 80s horror and was particularly impressed by the films of Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson. In films such as “The Evil Dead” and “Braindead” zombies, gore and humor came spilling off the screen in equal measure. For Wirkola’s “Dead Snow,” the filmmaker mixes in other horror elements of the 80s most notably “Friday the 13th” and its premise of a bunch of young kids isolated in a cabin and coming under attack from some deadly, unstoppable force. But instead of Jason in his hockey mask they uncover undead German stormtroppers. Wirkola says the biggest challenge he faced making the film was the weather: “There were days when we had so much snow that we had to dig out the props and equipment before we could start shooting. Our blood kept freezing up. We used syrup blood and we wanted to keep it all natural but it was impossible because the blood kept freezing up. That’s why we have some digital blood some places in the film. And not only the blood froze up but also the mechanisms that were supposed to shoot the blood and the brains and all that stuff. Everything is more complicated in horror when it’s minus fifteen degrees and wind.” “Dead Snow” offers a contrast to the new Canadian zombie film “Pontypool,” which is restrained in its depiction of gore, saving the effects for essentially one gruesome but effective scene. “Dead Snow” serves up Nazi zombies in a gorefest tribute to Raimi’s “The Evil Dead” and Jackson’s “Braindead.” But Bruce McDonald’s “Pontypool” is inspired more

of creatures to be mowed down with maximum carnage. But “Pontypool” shows us the other extreme of the genre. Director Bruce McDonald says, “Zombies are not malicious. Traditionally there’s not malicious intent. I mean they’re not quite sure where they are going, they kind of bump around and into each other and they look a little disheveled and a little forlorn as opposed to other sort of monsters with great intent, the zombie is the sort of a common man’s monster.” The innovation that “Pontypool” brings to the table is how the infection is spread. It’s not from a virus or from bite or even because there’s no more room in hell. The infection in this case is spread through language. That’s right, if you hear an “infected” word, you can become something that’s essentially a zombie. You don’t die and become reanimated but your brain ceases to function normally and you suddenly want to attack those who are uninfected. The way this zombification process works taps into our fear about loss of identity and fear of some degenerative mental illness like dementia that slowly robs us of who we are. I have to give kudos to McDonald for refreshing the zombie genre in ways I never thought possible. And that’s why “Pontypool” is so good – it manages to surprise you by working within a familiar genre but delivering the traditional elements in fresh new ways. by Romero’s socially conscious zombie films. But these two latest genre entries, both released by IFC Films On Demand, represent the full range of the genre, and display the reasons why zombies are so popular and malleable. Zombies are hollow shells of what we once were and that’s part of what makes them interesting horror creatures. They scare us not only because they pose a threat but also because we fear we might become one. It’s that vague sense of their former humanity that can make them difficult to deal with. It’s not tricky when you are dealing with the Nazi zombies of “Dead Snow;” it’s easy to kill them without mercy. That’s one way of depicting the undead, as a faceless horde

WATCH THIS IN THEATRES By Beth Accomando
Funny People (Universal) A bro comedy about cancer. Hmm? Well if anyone can pull this off it would be Judd Apatow and stars Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler. Sandler is a seasoned comedian with terminal cancer who decides to take Rogen’s neophyte stand up under his wing. Hilarity and tearjerking ensues. Opens July 31. Rating:
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Warner Bros.) The sixth installment of the Harry Potter films arrives this summer, and the kids at Hogwarts are starting to look like they’re ready for grad school. The big question has less to do with finding out about Lord Voldemort’s dark past and is more about whether or not they can wrap up J. K. Rowling’s seven book series before the kids get so old that they have to be youthened by CGI. Opens July 15. Rating:
500 Days of Summer (Fox Searchlight) The first of a pair of quirky romantic comedies that questions whether or not true love exists. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the believer and Zooey Deschanel is the skeptic. Who’d have thunk that the kid from Third Rock from the Sun would turn out to be such a talented actor, but Gordon-Levitt is superb and Deschanel is a charmer. The film is the debut feature of Marc Webb who scored big with it at Sundance. Opens July 17. Rating:
Orphan (Warner Bros.) There’s something wrong with Esther? And there’s something familiar about this film in which a young girl isn’t quite as sweet and innocent as she appears. Vera Farmiga and Peter Skarsgaard are the unsuspecting parents who adopt the creepy child and then experience a series of freak occurrences. Been there, done that. Opens July 24. Rating:
Thirst (Focus Features) South Korea’s Park Chan Wook floored audiences with his revenge trilogy. Now he turns his attention to the vampire genre with this tale of a man of faith who is turned into a bloodsucker by an experiment gone wrong. The film divided audiences at Cannes with its mix of violence, sex, and odd tonal shifts. Opens July 31. Rating:
Paper Heart (Overture) And this is the second quirky romantic comedy of the summer. This time it’s a mock documentary about comedian Charlyne Yi hitting the road in search of true romantic love and possibly finding it with Michael Cera. Opens August 7. Rating:

If you stop talking about yourself for one moment you’d see that everyone is trying to eat you alive. When was the last time you paid for your own drink? Everyone is dotting on you cos they wanna eat your energy. Clue Number One should’ve been when they agreed with you that Elvis is still alive.
You’ve got a real flare for giving others drama without being wrapped up in it. And it probably won’t surprise you to know both William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy are of your climactic sign. Having a Buddha statue does not automatically make you enlightened. But helping that old Buddhist monk across Fifth Avenue certainly makes you appear spiritual. Too bad it was outside Saks where everyone is busier wondering if your Fendhi bag is real instead of your goodwill.
Getting in shape is a great way to ensure your enjoyment of summer, but go easy. You’re a fragile sign, prone to all kinds of ligament damage. Sadly, your pursuits to felate yourself are futile, but don’t get me wrong - the yoga class is still a good idea.

Nobody needs a vacation more than you, but it’s high time your travels brought you wisdom instead of more tattoos you don’t remember getting. Don’t follow the lead of Aquarius, Paris Hilton, and run off to Vegas – you don’t have a rich daddy. But unlike Paris, you do have attractive feet. Of PISCES and Men I thought putting rodents in butts was an urban legend until I met you. Trying new things is good and I encourage your exploration. But get with the times - gerbil in the butt is sooooo 1993! And the local emergency room is still talking about your last visit.
