t’s a Sunday morning like any other at the beach. Up early, pot of coffee, check the waves. June gloom is in full swing, we’re socked in for the next few hours, waves look pretty small. Don’t think I’ll be paddling out...again. Good time to jot down some thoughts, reflect on the past, prepare for the future.

This July marks my 26th summer spent in San Diego. Although I don’t surf as much as I did for the first two decades here, I still try to consider myself a surfer. My trusty Dewey Weber is hanging in the rafters, poised & ready…but, pretty friggin’ dry! Ha! I doubt that I missed a single day of surfing for the first ten years I was in San Diego. When I taught surfing for the Aquatic Center I must have been in the water 6 hours a day. I actually quit a restaurant job back in the day because there was a big swell hitting at Windansea. Yeah, It was like that! Then I learned about responsibility & settled down a bit. Got a real job & married the love of my life. Funny how things change. All good. No regrets. One way I stay in the thick of it, is by running the Revolt Summer Surf Series with my wife Leslie each year. I’m amazed this will be our sixth RSSS season! We have a whole new crew working with us this year to make this the biggest season to date. We welcome some new sponsors & new charities. Rockwell has stepped up as our title sponsor this season, so not only will the new ASP rated judges have zero problems with the timing, but all our top riders will be sporting new Rockwell watches this summer. We’re just two weeks away from the first event of the season. June 23rd we’ll be down at Crystal Pier with a hundred or so of the finest surfers around, charging as hard as the waves will allow. Not just local riders here… there’ll be plenty from N. County and Orange County & a few from South of the border. Past seasons have seen professional & amateur surfers from Tahiti, Australia, Japan, Brazil & Peru show up & compete. Not just talking about shortboarders here: We have longboarders, Stand Up Paddle, Ocean Race divisions. Men Women, Juniors & Groms. We have something for everyone. New this season we have a couple more SUP divisions. The youth SUP surfing and the SUP Roughwater Race. As the SUP sport evolves, we evolve with it. The Roughwater race is based on the hit Victory SUP Cross series. It will be a great test of skill & conditioning. Athletes will hit the water running, paddle thru the whitewater and out and around a buoy 1/4 mile offshore. Race back, surf in, run around another buoy on the sand & head back out to do it all over again. Really?! If you think you have what it takes…step up! Can’t wait to see it live. We keep putting together this cool event & they just keep showing up & blown’ up! Anyone that has been to our events will tell you how fun & exciting they are. Surf action, great music, fun beach games...If you’re lucky, you just might walk away with some incredible swag that we raffle off at each event. To date we have passed out well over $200,000 worth of cash, prizes, new surfboards, skateboards, bikes, iPads, cameras at our events. Wow. We’ll be hosting some great afterparties this season as well. One of our new sponsors this year is Moondoggies in Pacific Beach. Newly remodeled & ready to welcome our crew for some ‘post surf contest celebrations’. Keep an eye on both of our facebook pages for the line-up of live bands & dj’s. TASTE cean Beach has definitely been in need of some new flavor as of late; and the talented crew behind the Bareback Grill have more than delivered, with the all new Raglan Public House. An interesting and creative take on the local’s beach bar concept. Raglan has already created quite a buzz among those that appreciate fresh, full flavored food and full bodied craft brews. We had to see what all the fuss was about.

RAGLAN PUBLIC HOUSE The REVOLTINSIDER reveals a hip new venue where New Zealand flavors meet Americana fresh cuisine. Ocean Beach dining has never looked, or tasted, better!

Executive chef Robby Valdez serves up some of his personal favorites, loaded with flavor and freshness.

Rustic-industrial meets re-cycled and re-purposed chic. Outside, the front of the building is wrapped in beautiful weathered wood planks that were actually re-purposed from the old Santee Drive-In Theatre. Pop Art inspired light fixtures (custom made by Michael Soriano) float above knotty wooden tables made from recycled delivery pallets. The artisan flair collides with New Zealand influences everywhere you look. Look up and see a vintage beer cooler overflowing with New Zealand beer bottles (it’s another cool custom light fixture). They even thought of the local skateboarders by outfitting a wall with handy wooden board racks. The days are busy and the afternoons are “killing it” with a steady flow of customers filling up virtually every table & barstool, inside & out. They’re made up of OB locals, families, college age partiers and young professionals, all looking for an awesome dining and social experience We had an opportunity to sit down with one of the owners PJ Lamont and his executive chef Robby Valdez to sample some of their favorite dishes and talk about the build-out. PJ is an easygoing guy with a knack for business. He and his brother (with the help of a family friend) took an original investment and opened two of San Diego’s favorite beach bars, the Bare Back Grills in PB and Downtown. After both had become successful locations, they saw room to expand further. Viola - Raglan Public House. They pulled some of the key staffers from Bare Back to make sure service was up to par. Mike from the PB location is posted up behind the bar, and Kyle from downtown is busy running the front of the house. Another Bareback import, Executive Chef Robby Valdez is busy blowing people’s minds with his ‘New Zealand / Americana Fusion cuisine. He pulls fresh ingredients from local farms and farmer’s markets. Most of the menu items are made from scratch. The Aioli sauces are made fresh daily, the meat for the lamb burgers is ground daily as well. ‘Farmer’s Market Wednesday’ showcases Robby’s market fresh specials from ingredients directly from the Ocean Beach Farmer’s Market. His menu specials always pair with incredible featured beers. A local cask beer is featured every other Wednesday & Sundays are Robby’s Raglan Brunch. Omelettes made to order & homemade waffles are just some of the tasty items offered. They have a solid line-up on draft. Roughly 60 percent local beer & 40 percent New Zealand labels. The craft Beers are constantly rotating - what you see on tap today will not be there in a week or so. “ If we get something rare, it goes on line right away” PJ tells us, “Locally we rotate labels like Coronado, Leftcoast , Ballast Point, Stone Brewery, Green Flash & Karl Straus, but we’re even bringing in beers like Auborn Alehouse from Northern California.” Constantly busy, not only with the sudden success of the venue but also helping out with various fundraisers for SD Coastkeepers, Sunset Cliffs Surf Assoc. and the Surfrider Foundation, PJ and his crew have hit the nail on the head with this new venue. The Raglan Public House seems destined for greatness and we wish them all the best. We happily give them a solid 5 out of 5 stars.

Noah Johnson has been fighting the good fight the last few years by rescuing large amounts of vinyl banner and billboard materials from an untimely burial in our landfills. Buster Halterman - Buster Biofuels In San Diego there’s a massive void between supply and demand of biodiesel. n the 1940’s and 50’s, California surfers revolutionized “sidewalk surfing”, when there were no waves to surf, using wooden planks with roller skate wheels attached to the bottom. Then in the early 1970’s, developments of shape and design, including polyurethane wheels and maple plywood boards, fed their concrete cravings. And over the succeeding decade, pure skateboarders were born. Originators like Mark Gonzales, Tony Alva and Rodney Mullen flooded this new activity with a plethora of tricks, including aerials, grabs, street plants, and the “magic flip” —today known as the kickflip. And so began the art & bustle of skateboarding—today, one of the fastest growing sports on the planet. Since its inception, an exponential blitzkrieg of significant skaters has fueled the progress of skateboarding. Such greats as Mark Gonzales, Lance Mountain, Natas Kaupas, Danny Way, Mike Vallely, and Tony Hawk resonated beyond the arena and into the mainstream eye. The list of athletes continued throughout the years, leading to a significant time in skateboard history, in 1993, when a four-year-old boy by the name of Ryan Sheckler, stood on a skateboard for the first time. Young Sheckler had the bug. From that moment forward he became fused to his passion. The board became an extension of his physique and an amplification of his creative conscience. It transcended all that was important and provided all he needed to survive—His diet. His oxygen. His dreams. And as a result of relentlessly pursuing his vision, Sheckler turned pro at thirteen. He began competing in street skating and park contests in 2002 and has since taken home five X Games medals along with a long list of top block standings. In most regards, Sheckler’s name is synonymous with professional skateboarding—child prodigy turned professional skateboarder, world-renowned athlete, teenage heartthrob, business owner, charity founder and TV star. His influential skills in the park and on the street have secured the respect of pros old enough to be his father and children nearly young enough to be his own. He’s a phenom in every sense of the word. And yet, the young San Clemente skater is obsessed with the task at hand— “Shecks” wants to go down in history as one of the greatest skaters who ever lived. Even with many achievements under his belt, Sheckler still keeps a humble remembrance of the road he traveled to get there and who helped him along the way. He recently launched the Sheckler Foundation—to enrich the lives of children and fund programs that aid the health of action sports athletes. And from this honorable place bloomed Skate For A Cause—his annual event held at Etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest to raise awareness about skateboarding and revenue for charity. During a swift recess from his heavy travel schedule, Sheckler shared time on a beautiful sunny morning to chat with Revolt In Style about his current mindset and upcoming events.

RIS: What’s going on Ryan? How are you? SHECKLER: Awe man, I’m doing great! I’ve been surfing, skating, filming for my Plan B part and traveling a lot. I just got a new deal with Go Pro, and we just filmed a new GoPro commercial. A lot of good things have been happening. And we have ‘Skate for a Cause’ coming up in May. I’m really excited for that. A ton of people are coming out for it.

benefitting children with cancer and autism. The foundation is my heart. I have so much fun doing it. A lot of these kids have never skated before. But they’re into it. We’ll go skate around the park and they’ll laugh and their parents are so stoked because maybe they haven’t seen their kid laugh in over a week. It’s an eye opening experience and a way to give back. I really enjoy it.

RIS: Where did you guys film the GoPro commercial? SHECKLER: We went out to New York. I wanted it to be more of a rugged actual skateboarding piece. I really enjoy skateboarding in New York and I like the whole vibe there. We went out and skated in and around the town for three days. We never got in a cab. It was super fun and we tried to hit up all of the skate spots in New York. We got a big grand finale. It was super exciting and super rad that GoPro was down for it. I gave them my ideas for the video and they were stoked. It was a great way to kick off our relationship. It’s going to be awesome.

RIS: We have a great relationship with The A.skate Foundation – attending, participating and promoting their events as much as we can. SHECKLER: That s’ so awesome!

RIS: Sick. We also use GoPro cameras. So it’s been on a skateboard and under water. They’re really great. SHECKLER: Yeah man, we’ve been taking it out surfing and filmed some really funny clips in the water. It’s awesome. It’s so crazy how good that camera is and how small it is. You can just throw it on anything, anywhere. And it’s basically indestructible. It’s such a rad camera. RIS: Tell me about the Sheckler Foundation. SHECKLER: Years ago I was invited to go to Texas with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I met this sixteen-year-old girl Casey who had leukemia. She was the most rad girl ever. She was so positive. She just wanted to be outside. Her being at that skate demo was the greatest thing she got to do. She told me she just wanted to “live life”. Those words rang in my head. I thought, “Man, I’m living my life.” But there are a lot of people that are out there struggling. I wanted to be able to help those people. And I really wanted to be able to help children because they can’t help themselves. There are doctors who can help. But it costs money. We started thinking about it. And then we just started doing it. We started

RIS: Why do you think skateboarding has such an incredible impact on kids with autism? SHECKLER: It’s so crazy to me. I watched this show on Fuel TV called Surfers Healing. They took these kids that have autism out into the water, kids that had never really been comfortable in the water. And they got on these surfboards with experienced riders and had the most fun I had ever seen. I was so hyped after watching. I had to go out and skate. And then I thought, “Oh man, I’m going to go skate with these kids when I put on my Foundation event.” And it was the same exact positive experience as it was with surfing. It’s so new to them. It’s fun and you’re moving. Things are in motion. The wind is in your hair. There’s so much sensory happening for them all at once. I think it just vitalizes the moment. They love it. And I want to skate with all of them. RIS: The show is amazing. That’s Israel (Izzy) and Danielle Paskowitz who founded Surfers Healing. Their son, Isaiah, has autism. SHECKLER: You know, there’s an autistic skateboarder named Jimmy Carlin and he is one of the best skaters out there. He just skates. I don’t think that he thinks about anything else but skateboarding. He’s amazing. And if these kids can experience something like that with skateboarding, where they can do something they enjoy and love, it could be a new path for them.

RIS: Your next event, Skate For A Cause, is coming up on May 5th at Etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest. Why do you think Etnies is a great fit for this event? SHECKLER: It’s a great fit because Etnies is a huge skatepark. A lot of people can come in and not feel crowded. They have plenty of room to give people the full experience of skating, contests, and all that. Plus the skaters can hang in different groups and have lots of different obstacles to skate. We love Etnies and the City of Lake Forest for letting us do this every year. And we are also going to branch out into other areas around the country to hold similar events. RIS: Where would you like to have the next event? SHECKLER: I like Kansas City and Florida. But I’d really like to give cities a chance to bring our event to them. They could tell us about their skate park, their community. RIS: Your whole family plays an active role in your career and events. How are you able to accomplish so much together? SHECKLER: Even though my parents are separated, my family sticks together. Kane and Shane come and volunteer. My dad gives is support and my mom handles how it all goes down. We all work together but I gotta give most of the props to my mom. She’s crazy with how she can set up the whole event. I travel so much that I don’t get to help as much as I’d like to. And she sets it up so nicely every time. RIS: What can people expect at this year’s Skate For A Cause event? SHECKLER: We’re going to have all of the pro skaters out for a couple of best trick contests on a few different obstacles. Then we do this really fun relay race around the whole park. It’s always super fun. There will be all the carnival activities and sponsors giving away free gear to kids. We give away a lot of signed skateboard decks in the raffles. It’s going to be a lot of fun. That’s the whole point. RIS: In the past, the winners of the best trick contests have given their prize money back to the foundation.

And I really wanted to be able to help children because they can’t help themselves.” SHECKLER: Yeah, I’m pretty sure everyone has given the money right back to our foundation. It’s really cool because it takes time away from their schedules to get out and participate. I respect all of the skaters so much for putting my event on their calendars. And I’ve seen them change when they come to the clinics and skate with the children. You can see the look in their eyes that they are stoked to be there. And that’s when the really good skating comes out, when it’s such a positive time. RIS: Let’s talk about Street League and the Pro Tour coming up. How to you like the Enter ISX™ scoring technology used in Streetleague as opposed to more traditional contests that don’t reveal ranking until the contest is over? SHECKLER: It was crazy skating Tampa with the scoring not instant. I kinda got used to that. I like both but I think I’m going a little bit more toward the instant scoring. I like that you can do your trick and instantly know where you stand. It can really benefit you when you know your score, because you know what it is going to take to advance. RIS: It seems like the instant scoring is beneficial for the spectators because they aren’t left in the dark as to who is leading in the contests until it’s over. SHECKLER: Totally. But as a skater, it makes you dig deep. You have to dig into your soul and pull out the shredder. It makes or breaks you. RIS: In Streetleague there seems to be this amazing comradery not found in other competitions. You guys all seem to be having such an amazing time and really enjoying watching your friends skate. Does the level of competitiveness change when the vibe is like that? SHECKLER: It’s the same level of competition. There is nothing about it that is different. It still feels gnarly every time I go out there. RIS: Street skating has changed so much since the eighties, and seems to be evolving so much faster today. What big changes have you witnessed over the passed ten years? SHECKLER: It’s nuts! Go to any skatepark in California. The skaters are shredding. All the gnarliest tricks are going down everyday in every park. It’s so awesome for me to see how massive skateboarding is now because the kids are taking it so serious. It’s so rad because at the end of the day, we end up with a bigger skateboard community and

family of people that rip. When I was a kid we had to go buy skate videos at some skate shop or go to a buddy’s house to watch it. Now all the best skateboarding on the planet can be seen every day in every home on the Internet. Kids are watching the videos and then going right out in their front yard and learning the tricks on flat ground. It’s so sick the way it’s evolving. RIS: If you were fourteen years old right now, what would you do to become a professional skateboarder with how things are today? SHECKLER: If I had the bug, like I did when I started, I would watch every skate video, buy every skate magazine and be involved in skateboarding. I would just go for the gnarliest stuff and just go big. RIS: How old were you when you started skating? SHECKLER: I was four. That’s really all I’ve ever known. I got the bug to skate and I still have it. RIS: Who is your skate hero and what kind of impact has he represented in your life? SHECKLER: Danny Way. He’s the man. Danny has that non-stop will to survive. And he’s competitive all the time, every day, in everything that he does. As soon as he sees the green light, it’s go time. And he has to keep going until he finishes his job. He’s a guy who gets up from a broken ankle, goes back to the top of the MegaRamp, skates down it and wins. It’s things like that I reflect on when I wake up and feel like I can’t physically skate. I think of Danny Way and then tell myself, “You know what? I can skate today.” It’s powerful. I’ve gone on a bunch of trips with Danny and roomed with him. He’s got so much knowledge and is such a rad, rad dude. RIS: Wow. It’s like you have a little Danny Way guardian angel on your shoulder at critical times in your life, telling you to go for it. SHECKLER: Exactly. He’s been through all of it, seen everything, and he’s still killing it in many ways of life. He’s my hero for sure. RIS: Tell me about the “I HATE SHECKLER” advertisements. SHECKLER: I have the only screen print of that hanging up in my house. That came about when I felt like kids on the Internet were bombarding me. I didn’t care, but Oakley wanted to do this campaign. It would be really funny to see what people would say. RIS: Well it comes off like the haters are buying these shirts and you get the last laugh because they’re actually buying them from you! SHECKLER: We were going to take it to that level and sell the shirts and donate all the money to a charity. But I got to thinking what it would be like to see all these “I HATE SHECKLER” shirts around and I decided against it. But my brother wears it every now and then. RIS: Tell me about the controversy surrounding you skating the El Toro 20-stair. SHECKLER: Nope. I’m going to let everyone think what they want to think. And when they see my video drop they’ll see what it’s all about. RIS: How much time to you spend fighting off all the girls that want to be the future Mrs. Ryan Sheckler? SHECKLER: Not much time at all. I don’t put up with it. Some of them are cool to hang out with. But I’m so focused on skateboarding and finishing my video part now that I haven’t really been trying to find a chick. My mind is completely absorbed with landing tricks and making this video the best I can make it. RIS: Who is the hottest chick on the plant right now? SHECKLER: I have no idea. RIS: If you woke up tomorrow morning and you were Kim Kardashian instead of Ryan Sheckler, could you still kickflip the Costco gap? SHECKLER: Hahaha! I don’t know man that would be insane. I can’t even really wrap my head around that. RIS: When can we expect to see your full-length video? SHECKLER: I’m shooting for December. I want to get it done and let people see it. STREET SPOT #2: Ethel Dwyer Middle School

For this month’s edition of Streetspotting, my friend Conner Norris and I crept into Ethel Dwyer Middle School in Huntington Beach one sunny afternoon to skate the ledges. There’s a great open plaza with long, curved skate ledges that are not skate-stopped. The ledges lead right into a nice five-stair, so it’s a great spot to get a line. The spot has some skate history as well. Ryan Decenzo front-feebled the fourteen-stair in the Halleluja skate video. So sick! If you skate around the rest of the school you will find a ton of cool stairs and ledges to skate. But be careful. There are rumors of a ghost haunting the school (Don’t believe me? Google it!). A woman who went to school there as a girl, and later became the assistant principal – now haunts the campus. Her name was Ethel Dwyer. Strange sounds can be heard coming from the school’s boiler room. And many people have reported seeing lights in rooms where no one should be. Early on I was focused on ‘Swooping’, a dangerous discipline where you dive your canopy at the ground then skim across it for 500+ feet doing 60+ mph. I started competing in Swooping in 2003, traveling around the country and medaling at various events.

I qualified for the US Canopy Piloting Team in 2005 and 2008. In 2007 I moved away from Swooping and started competing in a then newly formed discipline called Vertical Formation Skydiving (VFS), where 4 people flying upside down at 160+ mph building various formations. After medaling in this discipline at various events, the team broke up & went separate ways with three of us forming So Cal Converge, a freefly team where we perform challenging synchronized flips and spins while doing 160+ mph.

With this current team, we have achieved 2 World Records, 3 National Championships, and are currently World Champions, which we are hoping to defend in Dubai later this year. “Skydiving is extremely addicting and keeps you wanting more” Q&A With Matt Lewis RIS: Any close calls or do we talk about such things? ML: I did hit the ground doing about 50 mph trying to figure out the whole swooping thing; got a sweet helicopter ride to the hospital out of it and definitely learned my lesson. RIS: What are the biggest changes in the sport these days ML: Wind tunnels and canopy advancements. Wind tunnels are popping up all over the country, allowing people with relatively low jump numbers to progress quickly. Canopy technology has advanced tremendously, allowing for faster, longer landings. RIS: What is your favorite or best jump to date? ML: Winning the world championships in Russia in 2010 was pretty rad. I was stoked to see all the time and hard work my team put in paying off. Also, the most recent head-down world record in 2009. To be in the sky with 108 of your friends doing 170 mph is pretty amazing. RIS: If you could plan the ultimate jump, where would that be? ML: Tough one….I’ve been lucky enough to jump all over the world. I guess I would want to jump in Norway or Switzerland, where I could fly my canopy inches off the deck down their amazing mountains. RIS: What makes you throw your self out of a plane time and time again? ML: The thrill of it. Skydiving is extremely addicting and keeps you wanting more.

RIS: Do you remember your first jump? ML: My first jump was in August of 2000. I did the AFF program in which you attend a 4-6 hour ground school and then jump with your own parachute with two instructors assisting you. I thought it was no big deal until they told me to step to the door, then I was like, oh shit! RIS: We understand you have started a ‘Canopy awareness’ campaign. What is that about and how does it save lives? ML: The majority of deaths in skydiving today involve people with good parachutes, in over their head. People are not becoming educated concerning canopy flight and are messing themselves up. Some dropzones are banning swooping because of this. Hopefully through education, not regulation, people can have a little more respect for the canopy portion of their skydive, be safe, and live to jump another day. RIS: Advice for the first time jumper? Words of wisdom for veteran skydivers? ML: For the first time jumper, try to soak it all in. It is a rush and can be overwhelming. For the veteran skydiver, never be too complacent. In our sport complacency kills. RIS: Have you ever peed your pants or barfed in the air? ML: Never peed, almost barfed...skydiving hungover = bad idea RIS: Religious or Godless: ML: I have my beliefs RIS: Is Blake insane? ML: No comment.

SWITCHFOOT Bro Am FOR THE LOVE OF SURF, AND ROCK & ROLL By Leslie Terhorst

icture this. A beautiful, sunny day at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. Surf is about 3’ to 5’ with the occasional 6 foot set rolling in. I’m doing my best to garner the attention of the 5 members of the band Switchfoot. They’re only in town for a day, and I only have them for a couple of hours. Enough time for a quick photoshoot & interview. They’re heading back out on tour & have zero free time, so I understand their longing looks as they watch surfers head out to catch these perfect North County waves. We set up the cameras & gear and get to work. Jon, Tim, Chad, Drew and Jerome have been putting on the Bro-Am for nearly 8 years now, and in that short amount of time, have turned it into one of those signature San Diego summer events that you simply have to go to, and it’s free! An annual event near and dear to Switchfoot’s heart, the Bro- Am was created to give back to the San Diego community while benefiting a local children’s charity through funds raised at a pre-event auction night soiree, as well as from vendors on the beach day-of, corporate surf team entries, and sponsorships. Since its inception in 2005, the Bro-Am has raised more than $515,000 for their charity.

After the photo shoot I sat down in the grass with Jon & Tim Foreman to talk about their upcoming Bro Am event and dig a little deeper into what motivates them to put this on, year after year. Here’s what they had to say. RIS: Out of all the charities one can choose to support, why did you choose the Stand Up for Kids Foundation? Jon & Tim: That’s a good question. We’ve done the Bro-Am with several different organizations. Casa De Amparo, Care House (to name a couple) but Stand Up for Kids just seemed to be the right fit. We just really connect with the kids there, and they can actually come out to the event. We’ve had so many great memories with some of these kids at Stand Up. So much of what we want from the Bro-Am is to just give them an incredible day at the beach, take them surfing or play guitar with them. We teach them to surf if they don’t know how, or teach them to play guitar. Because for us, music and surfing were two of the thing that kept us out of trouble, and to be able to pass that on to another generation... just felt like the right thing to do.

RIS: You’ve raised over $500K for the foundation, what are your goals for this year? Jon & Tim: It’s amazing to stop and reflect on the number you just mentioned, and also that this is the eighth year doing it. It’s not something we can really take full credit for. It makes me so proud to come from this community in San Diego, and the musical community we belong to. We’ve had a lot of musicians donate their time; no one gets paid to play. Jason Mraz, Chris Shiflett of the Foo Fighters, OK GO. So many great bands show up because they just believe in the event, which makes us very proud. As far as goals are concerned, we’re continually blown away by the generosity of the community. It’s exciting for us to be working with Stand Up, and their vision. Which is not simply about the money raised (obviously that is important to us and them,) but it’s bigger than just the money. The fact that they’re giving the kids the vision that goes beyond hand to mouth, day to day. You know that the kid’s reality is so focused on their immediate needs, and to be able to pull them out of it for a day, and celebrate that they are the underdogs, and that they have been dealt a difficult hand, and yet, the fact that they are still fighting. It’s worth celebrating. RIS: So now this event is June 16th. Lets say someone (although I find it hard to believe) hasn’t heard of the Switchfoot Bro-Am. What can they expect to see when they come down to Moonlight Beach? Jon & Tim: If you’ve never heard of the Bro-Am, the Bro-Am in my opinion is one of the best days

of the year in the North County. It’s a day where my hometown celebrates these kids through surfing, rock-n-roll, and an incredible day to spend at the beach. You can expect to see great surfing. We’ve had 3X World Champion Tom Curran, Rob Machado, Dane Reynolds & all sorts of amazing surfers compete. New this year is the inaugural Rob Machado Bro Junior, open to any kid under the age of 16. They can sign up at the beach (with a parents permission) and the entry fee is a piece of their old surf clothing. If you need more info, it’s on our website. They can also expect to hear some amazing music, especially this year, and a lot of it from right here in San Diego. For us, this is the community that we come from. We’re very proud of San Diego’s music heritage, from Drive Like Jehu, to Rocket From the Crypt. There is a lot of amazing history that we have here in San Diego. So for us, this is our chance to shine a light on the next generation of artists, and show what that’s going to look like, and to find out who’s going to carry the torch after us. EDITORS CHOICE - JOEY RAMONE - Ya Know Genre: Punk Rock

He might not have been the greatest singer to music snobs, pretentious rock critics, progressive rock nerds, or the bohemian bourgeois that were into Art Rock during the 70’s. But he defiantly gave a voice to teenage brats, social misfits, punks, drunks and skunks for the last three decades, and then some. He was the front man for a band of rebellious songwriters from New York City that barely knew how to play their instruments but blazed like a bullet from a gun once they hit the stage. That man’s name is Jeffry Hyman, but the world knew him as Joey Ramone, the lead vocalist for a platoon of punk rock musical misfits known as the Ramones that helped forge a new frontier for rock and roll. Joey is one of rock’s most treasured vocalists that rose to prominence from the gutter like an alley cat alongside Iggy Pop and Wayne Kramer of the MC5. After Joey died in 2001, his brother Mickey Leigh gathered some undiscovered demos and took it upon himself to release the tracks as a proper album. Using the vocal tracks as they were originally recorded, Leigh collected some punk rock alumni that were friends and admirers of Joey’s work with the Ramones, to help him complete the record. Guests on “…Ya Know?” include Joan Jett, Little Steven Van Zandt of the E Street Band, along with members of Cheap Trick, The Dictators, the Smithereens, and the Patti Smith Group. I had the pleasure of meeting Joey and the Ramones at the Hard Rock in New York a couple years before he died. Joey bought me a drink, and they all commented on how I reminded them of Lisa (Joey’s Ex), I didn’t realize the significance of that at the time, but I do now. I’m so glad to see that his brother is keeping his music alive.

THE DARLINGS – The New Escape Genre: Alt/Rock

The latest offering from this often overlooked and definitely underrated band is nothing short of great and the perfect “New Escape.” They have added a small bit of a harder rock edge (and a few other twists and turns) without departing too much from their melodic punk rock sound. Established fans will be pleased with their stretch of their talents to a step outside their normal and new fans will find this is just the sound they have been looking for. After reviewing their self titled EP some time ago I feel they have taken all the elements that I raved about then such as their attention to detail, stellar basslines and the great synergy of musicians and writing to yet a higher level with “The New Escape”. “Hypnotize” is a great example of how the band has matured and stretched to make a similar but different tune that just expands on how talented the band truly is. I think “Broken Heart Still Beating” is one of the best on the alum for the quality of each instrument, the vocals and the great lyrics. A bluesy feel comes in on many of the songs but is more evident in “Head Hunter” and makes for an intelligent change for the band. Again it shows the range their talent stretches across! “Fight Alone” is another favorite because it is pure signature music of The Darlings with subtle updates that just makes for a great listen. “Someone Else At the Wheel” is a clever song and illustrates really well how you can scan through many genres and tunes and then find just the perfect one to rock out to and that would be off this awesome new album.

MICKEY AVALON – Loaded Genre: Hip Hop

Mickey Avalon is at it again with his angst ridden nuances in his second album, Loaded. Standing at 18 tracks, the musical work is not a far outcry from his previous album as he continues to excessively rap about his nostalgic pastimes of prostitution and addiction. Micky’s new work takes fans on a journey through the seedy streets of Hollywood. He immediately launches into his salacious exploits with “Rock Bottom,” an anthem for his rebellious self-destructing behavior, and continues the depravity alongside Unwritten Law’s Scott Russo on the album’s lead single “Girlfriend,” an ode to having friends with benefits. Mickey’s diversity allows him to slip into sleek electro-synth beats (“I’m Hot”), playfully intricate rhymes over a classic hip-hop beat (“More Junk”), and rock out while letting it all hang out (“Tight Blue Jeans”). Perhaps one of the most telling tracks on the album, “CA Crack Cocaine” says it all: “I’m living the American dream/I got the shit that’ll make you scream.” This track, featuring rapper Cisco Adler, takes you back to Beastie Boys in their early days when the east coast white boys were partying as much as they were rapping. For those who are not familiar with Mickey, he sprung to prominence with his debut self-titled album released through Interscope in 2007, featuring the hit single ’Jane Fonda’. He has had tracks appear in ’Harold & Kumar Go To Guantanamo Bay’, the TV series ’Entourage’ and ’American Dad’, and his track ’Stroke Me’ was used in the trailers for the Cameron Diaz movie ’Bad Teacher’ and the ads for the video game ’Duke Nukem Forever’. He also co-wrote the Unwritten Law hit ’Shoulda Known Better’.

The Cure - Entreat Plus

[2 LP] (180 GramVinyl, Remastered, Remixed and Expanded version) Entreat is a live album by The Cure, recorded at London’s Wembly Arena in July 1989. It consists entirely of songs performed from the band’s 1989 record Disintegration; while they were on their international Prayer Tour. Entreat was distributed exclusively in France as a promotional tool. When bootlegs began to surface, however, the album was given a limited European release. Re-released for record Store Day 2012, Entreat Plus features all twelve songs from the album, including the four excluded from the original.

Jamiroquai - Rock Dust Light Star

Rock Dust Light Star is the seventh studio album released by British acid jazz band Jamiroquai. The album was released in the U.S. on April 21, 2012. Record Store Day exclusive release on vinyl includes the album on CD. The album was recorded at Jay Kay’s home studio in Buckinghamshire, as well as Hook End Manor in Oxfordshire, and Karma Studios in Thailand. The album is written entirely by the band, and produced by first time collaborators Charlie Russell and Brad Spence. The band revealed that the musical style of the new album will be more centered on funk and rock, however, frontman Jay claimed that the tone and style of the album were hard for him to describe. Jay Kay claimed that a total of forty songs were recorded for the album, however, only fifteen tracks appeared across all editions of the album.

Dr. John - Locked Down

[LP+CD] (Produced by Dan Auerbach of Black Keys) Storied musician and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dr. John—Mac Rebennack—releases Locked Down, a startling album that marks a significant departure from his recent efforts. Recorded in Nashville with the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach as producer, and a host of younger players. The pair cut tracks that evoke his earliest experiments on Atlantic Records--melding New Orleans R&B, swampy rock, and tripped-out grooves-without sounding retro. The vinyl album, which also includes the complete album on CD, was released on Record Store Day, April 2, 2012. Auerbach, a long-time fan of the influential musician, dubbed “the Night Tripper” in the late 60s, visited Dr. John late in 2010 in his hometown New Orleans, announcing his ambition to produce “the best record you’ve made in a long time.” Rebennack replied that he had done his research— his children had told him good things about The Black Keys—and the conversation led to an agreement to collaborate on the 2011 Bonnaroo Jam being curated by Auerbach. That performance—called by New York Times critic Ben Ratliff in his best-of-the-year list “deep and oozy, close-to-the-vest, low-frequency funk”—confirmed that something unusual was taking place and led to September recording sessions in Nashville. Dr. John returned to Nashville at Thanksgiving to complete the vocals and Locked Down was mixed by Auerbach and completed in early 2012.

I would like to introduce; P.B.’s very own beat bustin’ badass, Mickey Beats! I had to find out more about this (musically driven, politically charged, I ♥ my community, amazing) guy. Not only to find out what his plans are for his future, but also the future of our Pacific Beach neighborhood, that he’s called home for most of his life. For a guy that lives in Pacific Beach and doesn’t drink... there has to be more to his story. Here’s what I found out: RIS: What gives you your passion for music? MB: I feel like music creates its own passion and I’m just along for the ride. Ha! I am lucky though, because i can express my passion for music in front of people. I am the selector. RIS: Who has inspired you the most? MB: Jenny Beats is my idol! Have you seen her? She is so hot. My wife is so hot! We’ve been together since high school and she is the source of all my confidence and smiles. She inspires me to strive for greatness. RIS: You play with Spit Finger. What’s the difference on being center stage as a DJ, compared to being a part of a big band? MB: Being a DJ is a blast and I am thankful for being able to play other people’s music, for other people. When I play in the band, other people get off on our original music. You can’t beat that feeling. Another difference is when I Dj with Split Finger, there are no requests, except for our songs. And another difference is the check is split in 6 ways. RIS: There’s another side to you, should we say a political side. You just ran for PB Planning Group. What inspired you to want to get more involved in the P.B. Community? MB: Since I am semi-politically conscious, I figured I should become community conscious too. I started by talking to a good friend of mine Sara Berns, the Executive Director of Discover PB who is very active in the PB community and is a saint. She brought me to my first PB Planning Group meeting and I was hooked. I ran for a seat, lost and then lost again a month later when I tried to fill another seat in my census track to some guy that didn’t even run in the general election, and was twice my age. Curious how a majority of the PBPG voted for a guy that didn’t even campaign. Then again, the PBPG hasn’t been known to be the most fair or openminded. I see that changing soon though.

RIS: Where does Mikey Beats see himself in 5 years? MB: I have been in PB ever since I was old enough to catch a bus from Bay Park where I grew up. I have lived in North PB for 8+ years and I own two businesses registered in PB. I am going to be here for decades to come. Musically, I see myself producing local talent and booking local shows. Personally, I want to have started family with Jenny Beats and have a dog I can tackle and snuggle with. RIS: Last but not least, where’s you favorite place to grind? MB: North P.B. has the greatest food!!! Oscar’s is the greatest Mexican seafood this side of Ensenada. Once you try a Taco Especial on a flour tortilla and then wash it down with some of Juan’s fruit water, you’ll know why I rave about this place. A place is good when you see Leilani from Leilani’s waiting in line for some seafood soup! Leilani’s is also up there with Oscar’s. Her Hawaiian style food is the best this side of the islands! I get the Sam Spam, extra green onions, a side salad and Manapua if they haven’t run out. It doesn’t get more North PB or more delicious than that.

RIS: How can other people in their own communities get more involved? MB: If you want to get involved in your community start with talking to your neighbors. An excellent site get in touch with your neighbors is nextdoor.com. If your neighborhood is registered, that site will connect you with local activities, meetings for community groups and local non-profits. If you live in PB, come to the PB Library on Thomas and Cass on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm and start learning about our community.

Prometheus (20th Century Fox)

All that’s good in Prometheus can be summed up in two words: Michael Fassbender. Fassbender, as an android who fancies himself as Peter O’Toole’s Lawrence of Arabia, proves the most compelling aspect of the film. Ridley Scott’s long awaited prequel to Alien serves up some gorgeous visuals and entertains some weighty ideas but comes up a little short. Plus it’s annoying that even though the story pre-dates the time of Alien, the technology in Prometheus looks more advanced. Details, details!

Rock of Ages

(Warner Brothers) Tom Cruise is an aging rock star in what’s looking to be the male guilty pleasure equivalent of Mamma Mia. It’s set in the 80s LA rock scene and with a story of young lovers included to offset the older stars (Cruise, Alec Baldwin). It’s based on a Broadway musical but I don’t think Cruise wants to really play up the aging thing. He still wants to be sexy and that kind of ruins the joke. I recommend renting This is Spinal Tap instead.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (20th Century Fox)

Seth Grahame-Smith’s historical mash up novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter makes it to the screen with the help of producer Tim Burton and director Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Wanted). Having honest Abe turn out to be a vampire hunter is a clever conceit and the film looks to kick it into high gear with a lot of CGI. Unavailable for preview, this one could go either way. For another historical mash up check out FDR: American Badass.

Brave

(Walt Disney) In need of another feisty animated Princess from Disney? Well you’re getting one. But this time with a Scottish brogue. The lovely Kelly Macdonald voices Princess Merida, who brings a curse upon her kingdom by defying a long held tradition. Then she must use her bravery and archery skills to break the spell. Looks to be standard Disney heroine fare. Opens June 22.

GOTTA SEE THIS ONE! Ted

(Universal) Family Guy’s Seth McFarlane makes his feature film debut with a tale about a man who’s teddy bear comes to life. Patrick Warburton and Mila Kunis (both of whom provide voices on Family Guy) join Mark Wahlberg’s man with the bear. Rated R, the film lets McFarlane push his comedy a little further than he’s allowed on TV. This might be the comedy of the year. Opens June 29.
