BLAH BLAH BLAH

PUBLISHER’S NOTE Greetings from REVOLT We crested yet another ridge somewhere on Highway 395. It was 8pm on a cold Sunday night. I saw there was nothing in the pitch black that even vaguely hinted of civilization. Usually a glow in the distance lets you know that a small town or truck stop was coming up. But nothing. I glanced down at the fuel gauge. It was now well below the red. A chill ran down my spine. Not only was it dark, but we had not seen a town in an hour or so. Back-tracking was not an option. Winding endlessly through the mountains somewhere south of Mammoth, the temperature was somewhere in the low 30’s. The last thing I wanted, was to have to get out and walk this snowy highway with a gas can. 18 wheelers were flying down this highway in both directions at full speed. Hoofing it seems like a life or death decision. Leslie looks over at me & gives me a little smile, “Watch, there’s a gas station over the next hill,” she offers. I smile back nervously, “There had better be, or we’re in for a long night”. I swallow hard & we push on....BOM BOM BOM! To make a long story short, she was right. We found a gas station over the next ridge and filled up Big Blu just in the nick of time. So goes another little adventure in our annual trip, zig zagging the entire state of California. Lesson learned: Fill up when you hit 1/3 of a tank. Especially when you are in Bumfuck Egypt. Duh. Every year we take off a month & try to forget about business, and just decompress. This year we crossed five different mountain ranges, ran the coast of California as far North as you can go. We hit snow, sleet, rain & some of the thickest ‘Pea Soup’ fog I have ever experienced in my life. It was snowing sideways near Yosemite, where we visited my 95 year old grandmother. She has the greatest stories...sharp as a tack & still going strong. But then there was crisp blue skies in Monterey & Giant waves at Mavericks. Green as Kashyyyk in the Redwood forests of Humbolt. Truly amazing. Overall we pulled 3000 miles and then some. We love California. We love to just get in the truck & drive. We met some of the coolest people along the way, saw most of our families and enjoyed what California has to offer. What a great trip. Now, back to work. First off we have the Ultimate Boarder Championships. Three sports one athlete. Surf, Snow, Skate. The Triathlon of a new generation. We have partnered up with Tim Hoover and his clan to cover this event. The first leg kicks off March 13th with the surf competition at Seaside Reef in Cardiff. Snowboarding at Northstar in Tahoe on the 19th & the skateboard competition will wrap up in Reno on the 20th. Oh yeah, a kick ass concert that night with Pennywise & T.S.O.L. - Log onto the new Revolt website for more info & Win lift tickets to Northstar & vip access to the concert. Booyah! This is one...no, three events you don’t want to miss. Next up we have a premiere of the new Jude Law flick ’Repo Men’. A futuristic vision of what we may become if we don’t step up Health Care Reform. “Um, sir? You’re card has been declined. I’m gonna have to ask for that kidney back...I’m serious.” Again, log on & register to win a pair of tickets. Let’s give back a little with this next event... On March 11th we are helping ‘I Race To Stop MS’ A benefit at The Bareback Grill, Downtown. Show your support, hang with some friends or meet some new ones. We will be raffling off some great prizes & sampling some tasty grub and libations all night long for a great cause. Let’s help to get rid of this disease once and for all. SEA SHEPHERD CREW IS PISSED

Despite sinking of million dollar Ady Gil they resume pursuit of illegal whalers In recent months the battle to save whales from illegal slaughter at the hands of Japanese whaling fleets has been heating up. Since the beginning of 2010 the crews aboard the Sea Shepherd vessels have had a rough time on the high seas in the war to end whaling. “The Japanese whalers have now escalated this conflict very violently,” said Captain Paul Watson. “If they think that our remaining two ships will retreat from the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in the face of their extremism, they will be mistaken. We now have a real whale war on our hands now and we have no intention of retreating.”

BEAVER FOUND AT TRESTLES Amazing Discovery Highlights Biologically Diverse Watershed

San Onofre State Park officers discovered a North American Beaver at the river mouth of the San Mateo Creek. According to State Parks officials, the species was once a native species to the San Mateo Creek area, but were thought to be largely extinct in the area. Officials speculate that the animal may be related to a small population of beaver, which was re-introduced into the Santa Margarita watershed by the Department of Fish and Game in the 1940‚s as a means of erosion control. Since then, the beaver have migrated to nearby creeks and watersheds in the area, including those in the Cleveland National Forest and San Mateo Creek. While State Parks officials are unclear about where this specific beaver originally resided, they are sure it came from one of the streams that flows into the San Mateo Creek. San Mateo Creek has been the site of an ongoing battle between the Surfrider Foundation and other environmental groups, and the Transportation Corridor Agencies, who are seeking to build a toll road project through the watershed. “This discovery supports our assertion that the San Mateo Creek has a thriving watershed ecosystem that deserves the highest level of protection from its source in the mountains to the ocean,” says Mark Rauscher, Surfrider Foundation’s Assistant Environmental Director. According to State Park scientists, the animal had suffered trama prior to being found and unfortunately succumbed to those injuries after being captured.

SENATORS REID, BAUCUS PROPOSE BIODIESEL TAX CREDIT EXTENSION An extension of the $1-a-gallon tax credit for biodiesel, which expired Dec. 31, is part of legislation introduced recently in the U.S. Senate to aid small businesses and unemployed workers. Legislation from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, and Senator Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat, would extend the biodiesel credit for one year. The biodiesel industry has said the tax credit is needed to revive production. “Extending these tax cuts creates the right environment for job creation,” Baucus said. He said the tax credit would be extended retroactively. There are 173 biodiesel plants with annual capacity of 2.7 billion gallons, according to the National Biodiesel Board. The group estimates that production of the fuel has ground to a near halt since the tax credit expired. The tax credit helps make biodiesel competitive with conventional forms of the fuel. A Local company affected is New Leaf Biofuel - a San Diego based company that collects used cooking oil from local restaurants and converts it in to biodiesel, a non-toxic and biodegradable alternative fuel that can be used in any diesel engine with little to no conversion. Check them out at www.newleafbiofuel.com

On Jan 8 In an unprovoked attack captured on film, the Japanese security ship Shonan Maru No. 2 deliberately rammed and sank the Sea Shepherd trimaran Ady Gil. Six crew crewmembers, four from New Zealand, one from Australia, and one from the Netherlands were immediately rescued by the crew of the Sea Shepherd ship Bob Barker. None of the crew Ady Gil crew were injured. The vessel, previously known as the Earthrace, was a fast, futuristic looking trimaran that recently set the world record for global circumnavigation. The vessel renaming reflects the ship’s benefactor, Ady Gil, who helped acquire the vessel. Revolt In Style had run an profile on the vessel & crew last year when it stopped over in San Diego on it’s amazing record smashing trip around the world. Earthrace was an amazing powerboat that held the record for a powerboat to circumnavigate the globe (60 days, 23 hours, 49 minutes). One of the most amazing vessels ever built and running on 100% biodiesel made from sustainable sources. The Ady Gil will surely be missed. On Feb 6 The Bob Barker had been actively blocking the slipway of the Japanese whaling fleet’s factory ship when, the Yushin Maru 3 intentionally rammed the Bob Barker, creating a 3-foot long 4-inch deep gash in the mid starboard side of the Sea Shepherd vessel above the waterline. No crew was injured during the collision. The Bob Barker continues to block the slipway of the Nisshin Maru, preventing the transfer of slaughtered whales and effectively shutting down illegal whaling operations. On February 11th, According to an ICR media release, three Japanese crew were injured when butyric acid splashed into their faces. Captain Paul Watson doubted the story because butyric acid, which is essentially rotten butter, is non-corrosive, nontoxic, and organic. It does not burn nor does it cause eye or skin irritation. In reviewing video footage of the confrontation, the Sea Shepherd crew discovered the real source of injuries for the three Japanese crewmembers. The three crew were indeed injured because they shot themselves in the face with pepper spray. The video shows the two crew with the tanks aiming a blast of pepper spray towards the Sea Shepherd crew and the camera. However the wind was not in favor of this Japanese tactic and the pepper spray was blown back into the faces of the three crew, who can be clearly seen rubbing their eyes. IN STYLE

“I’m doing what feels right” By Leslie Krouse The year is 1986, and Circe Wallace begins her illustrious snow career in Baker, WA. After becoming a Pro Snowboarder, and winning several global events, she signed several endorsement deals. Circe started working closely with her sponsors to help develop some of the first signature women’s specific products, including her Vans Signature snowboarding boot. Additionally, she helped design a Signature board made for smaller feet, and had a tighter turning radius.

CIRCE SNOW BRINGING THE BUNNY BACK

Over the years, Circe has immersed herself into every aspect of the snow lifestyle. Establishing one of the first full-service action sports management firms, called ‘The Familie’ in Carlsbad, CA, which is now a part of the Wasserman Media Group. Some of the amazing talent that Circe is fortunate enough to represent include, snowboarders Travis Rice, Nicolas Müller, skateboarding sensation Paul Rodriguez, and 2010 Olympic Gold Medalist Torah Bright, just to name a few. “I really enjoy working with young talent and being able to help them follow their dreams,” boasts Circe. As if being a Pro boarder, a Pioneer in the Industry, a Talent Manager, mother of an amazing 8 year old daughter Ava, “the light of my life,” states Circe proudly, and still hitting the mountain at least 50 times a year are not enough, Circe has now decided to take the snow fashion world by storm. Creating Circe Snow, in hopes of “bringing the bunny back”. Circe is living proof that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. I sat down with this femme-phenom, to find out what made her decide to carve a trail into the fashion world. RIS: What was the inspiration behind Circe Snow? Circe: Ultimately, I’ve been a snowboarder my entire adult life. Very early on, when I became a pro snowboarder I would help design and test, a lot of the early edition products. As I got older, and still being very active on the hill, I felt there weren’t any products that spoke to me. There seemed to be a hole between the young and youthful androgynous snowboard gear, and the highend mature skiwear. There just wasn’t anything in between. I wanted something fun and fabulous for me. It seemed that the clothes were boring, or there was the over priced cougar wear, or the young, baggy, boy-like snowboard wear. So, about two years ago I really started hunting for some kind of piece that would work for me. I took a look at Prada, and Montcler to see what they were doing, and it was then when I really realized they didn’t get it either. There was this total disconnect between fashion and functionality. So I felt like, well, if there was nothing out there, why not create my own line. I really wanted a simple line with a boutique feel, but with technical functionality, to fill what I felt was a void.

18  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

RIS: It’s funny you would say that, I was trying on my snow gear this season, and you can’t even tell I’m a girl, other than the colors. Circe: Right, where is the femininity in this. You still want all the technical features. You want to be warm, and be able to move around. There is no reason for this, we have the technology to apply to a female silhouette, so why not do it. I was wearing a simple black Oakley one piece for three years, and that was part of my inspiration for the technical side of the clothing. But mostly, I wanted to get out of the tween pink pokea-dot, and the fur-lined cougar wear, and find that perfect sweet spot. Why not be able to look beautiful, and feel great. RIS: So what makes these outfits so unique? Circe: I think the most unique aspects are the interchangeable adornments. It’s primarily a fusion of fashion, and function. The accessories featuring an interchangeable “kit” that includes a clutch you can attach to your belt, cuffs, collars, pocket adornments, and belts that let ladies switch up their look without buying new outerwear. It comes with a faux fur kit, no bunnies where harmed in the making of my garments. You can also upgrade to a studded kit, which is very rock-n-roll, or the Tudor, which is a ruffle. It’s a great thing to be able to mix and match and create your own unique look.

RIS: One of the things that impressed me the most, was how you incorporated 93% recycled polyester in the linings. What made you decide to go with these materials? Circe: I really felt I wanted to be a progressive modern company, and the only way to do that is to take all those things into consideration. For instance, the POAF-Free coating, it doesn’t have any benefit to the consumer, but it does to the people that are making the garments, they don’t have to breathe in toxic fumes. I really believe there is a human consciousness, and a need to be a global community. Anything, and everything that I can apply to my company to be more beneficial to the environment, and the people I work with, and be more sustainable, I’m all for it. RIS: What are some of your favorite spots to ride? Circe: My home mountain is Baker in Washington, that’s where I grew up. I also love Squaw Valley, Snowbird, and Jacksonville. We had a quick Q&A with last year’s champion Chad Shetler, here are some of his thoughts.

RIS: Who do you see as the biggest threat this year? CS: The top Five from last year. Todd Richards, obviously. Aaron Astorga is a good buddy, we surf & skate together all the time, so I know he’s a threat. Shayne & Omar are big threats. The Fletchers have always been good at all three sports. Kristian Philipp got second last year, he’s coming back & he’s really talented at all three sports. It can go any direction this year.

RIS: So Chad, what does it mean to you to carry the prestigious title ‘The Ultimate Boarder’? CS: It means alot! Just coming out on top against the talent that competes in the event, is a cool feeling. It gives me something to look forward to each year. RIS: What are you doing differently this year to prepare for the event? CS: Training more. I’d like to say I’m snowboarding & surfing more. I think surfing was my weak point. Pushing myself to board more has gotten me to the point that I need to be. I skate all the time anyway. I’m 100% a skateboarder at heart Now that I won last year, all eyeballs are on me now to be the guy to beat. I’m definitely more prepared.

Todd Richards – Legend Snowboarder

RIS: What’s the best thing about competing in the Ultimate Boarder Championships? CS: Being able to hang out with all the people involved, for a whole week. Boarding with Todd Richards, surfing with Christian Fletcher & John John. Then turn around and go skating with Omar. That whole week of doing what you love to do, and doing it with people you’ve always looked up to. That’s the best part of the whole contest. It’s not so much the competition, it’s about hangin’ out with the people you look up to and having a great time.

ADVENTURE

2010 RESORT REPORT

Without a doubt, our favorite choice for insane powder, steep runs & epic sessions in the park. The heaviest snowpack in the U.S. this season. 180 inches at print time, with more storms on the way!. Never make this destination a ’Day Trip’... there is so much terrain to rip, make it at least a three day trip. Take the Panorama gondi all the way up to the tip-top before dropping in for wind-buffed turns on Dave’s. If it’s windy, which is a lot, ski the trees in Avy Chutes off Chair 22. Or jump and jib in the Unbound Terrain Park. Mammoth- Yosemite Airport now features direct flights from L.A., San Jose, Seattle, Portland and Reno. With abundant above tree-line skiing, massive open bowls, ample chutes, drops and glade skiing, there’s plenty of challenging terrain as well as a plethora of intermediate and beginner options. Wanna get all new school? The terrain parks regularly win awards for the best in the country and include 7 parks and 3 halfpipes. The terrain on this mountain is awesome. Whatever your looking for they have from big wide open bowls, narrow chutes, steeps and bumps. If you’re looking for groomers they have plenty of that also. Do to the high altitude, tree runs are somewhat slim. Plenty of powder days not to mention the best wind buff you’ll ever encounter. Mammoth also is known for the best spring skiing in the country. Sunny days, great corn snow, and late spring storms always passing through. On a good season you can ski as late as the 4th of July.

Mountain High is home to not one, but three distinguished resorts. Even though they are only a mile apart, they offer stunning differences in both terrain and atmosphere. When they invited us up to cover the 91X Ditch Day we were happy to load up Big Blu with cameras & crew. We woke up early, grabbed a cup O’ Joe & stomped the pedal to the metal. I could not believe how fast we were at the mountain. Plenty of snow (in fact the most snow the area has received in about 40 years) Plenty of fun people to ride with & film. Go to www.revoltinstyle.com for the video of the day. Thanks to everyone at Mtn. High Marketing for an amazing day. West Resort: The West Resort is filled with a seemingly endless assortment of technical trails and skillfully-designed terrain features for progressive riders and skiers of all skill levels. It is the most youthful of the three areas and the site of many on-hill contests, promotions and live performances. It is also Southern California’s only local resort open seven nights a week. East Resort: The East Resort boasts the longest trails in Southern California serviced by a single high-speed quad. It is also known for its thrilling moguls, gladed tree skiing areas and breathtaking views of the Mojave Desert. Rising as high as 8,200 feet, the East Resort offers traditional skiers and snowboarders a true alpine experience without having to journey far from home.

91X Ditch Day was a blast

North Resort: Mountain High’s new North Resort offers 70 acres of beginner terrain perfect for families and introductory skiers. It is also home to the North Pole Tubing Park, the largest tubing area in Southern California. Formerly Ski Sunrise, Mountain High North is located directly across from the West Resort and operates Friday through Sunday peak season.

BIG BEAR MOUNTAIN RESORTS 2010 Olympic Gold Medalist Shaun White started his snowboarding adventure right here in Big Bear when he was just 6 years old. He began competing at the age of 7 and advanced so quickly that USASA placed him with kids almost twice his age for competitions. Located at 7,000 feet elevation, yet only 2.5 hours from the Los Angeles and San Diego metro areas Bear Mountain & Snow Summit serve up some of the best local snow available. El Nino has been delivering the goods this winter with tons of snow this past month. In fact this is the most snow in about 40 years. Bear Mountain is offering a dose of the Olympic Spirit as they unveil the only Superpipe available in Southern California. This 18-feet high, 580-feet long and 65-foot wide competition-class pipe is now open to all skiers and snowboarders who visit Bear Mountain. In addition to the opening of this massive pipe, Bear Mountain’s Park is getting a serious facelift as the park development crew makes use of more than five feet of fresh snow to build a variety of great new features. “Bear Mountain’s Superpipe is a big attraction, drawing snowboarders and skiers from all over the region who want to feel what it’s like to ride a pipe just like the USA Olympic Team,” said Chris Riddle, Director of Marketing for Big Bear Mountain Resorts. ”This impressive feature gives seasoned riders a chance to channel their inner-Olympian and spectators an up close look at an X-Games-worthy pipe. If you aren’t quite ready for the Superpipe, but you want the experience, we also have a mini-pipe for the more intermediate level riders.” Bear Mountain and Snow Summit are having an epic season with record snowfall and a base of over 6 feet. Offering a variety of diverse terrain, Bear Mountain and Snow Summit provide skiers and snowboarders with a combined 438 developed acres, 26 lifts, including 4 high-speed detachable quads, and more than 55 runs.

WHITE

Red Bull Project X – Training Grounds For Olympic Gold

“I think some people have questioned whether Shaun has been an innovator in his career... up until now.”

Shaun White is many things but most notably he’s driven. Coined one of the most accomplished sports stars in the world, he holds many of the highest accolades within snowboarding and skateboarding, and at 23, he’s only getting started. An X Games double threat with medals in both snowboarding and skateboarding, as well as a gold medal from the 2006 & 2010 Winter Olympics, Shaun White possesses insane skills and instantly recognizable looks. That amazing combination has made him one of the most recognizable sports athletes of his time. Born in San Diego, California in 1986, Shaun Roger White endured two major surgeries to correct a heart defect before he was a year old. The growing youngster proved that he was far from frail, charging into sports like surfing, soccer and snowboarding. Shaun grew up in a family of five: Mom (Cathy), Dad (Roger), Sister (Kari) and Brother (Jesse). The family liked to snowboard together, so they started taking road trips to the local mountain resorts. At 4 years old Shaun was fearless on skis as he raced down the slopes with older brother Jesse. Cathy thought he would get into less trouble snowboarding, so at age six she put him on a snowboard and instructed him to copy everything Jesse did. Shaun did just that, he was a natural progressing at an amazing rate. His parents quickly started entering him in as many snowboard contests as they could afford. To save money at events, the family lived out of a 1964 Econoline van -nicknamed Big Mo.

At seven, Shaun entered his first amateur snowboard contest and won, earning him a wildcard entry into Nationals, where he placed just outside of the top 10. At that time, his mom sent Burton a homemade video of Shaun just as the company was coincidentally developing a kid-sized snowboard line. Not surprisingly, they were impressed, and offered the 7-yearold a sponsorship deal. With the support of Burton, he turned pro at 13.After winning five national titles as an amateur, Shaun captured his first major win as a pro in 2001 at the Arctic Challenge, by the unanimous vote of his fellow competitors. He earned his first Winter X Games medal when he was 16, and between Slopestyle and Superpipe hasn’t failed to stand on the Winter X podium since. Between skateboarding and snowboarding Shaun now holds 16 X Games medals, and a record 10 of them are gold.

While Shaun was being lauded as a snowboard prodigy, he was simultaneously turning heads on the skateboard scene. Professional skateboarder Tony Hawk befriended the 9-year-old at a local skatepark and mentored the up-and-comer, helping Shaun turn pro in skateboarding at 17-years old. In 2003 he became the first athlete ever to compete and medal in both the Summer and Winter X Games in two different sports. In 2007 Shaun set unparalleled standards, winning the overall title and prestigious honor of Action Sports Tour Champion thanks to his impressive skills in skateboarding vert.

Project X

The brainchild of long nights on the road and years of spinning, flipping, competing and evolving, Shaun came to Red Bull with the idea to create a place where he could finally learn the tricks that he has had spinning inside his head but had yet to make a reality. He wanted to progress the sport, and in order to do that, he needed to change his routine. Shaun wanted to create a place that not only allowed him to ride and to progress in the world’s best halfpipe, but to do it under complete secrecy. How secret? There was a rumor floating around the Internet after a photo from was leaked out and people didn’t even think it could be real-they thought it was all just a hoax. We can assure you it was not. Project X was located on a remote part of Silverton Mountain, eight miles outside the town of Silverton, CO. This is not your average resort. Founded by two snowboarders looking for a change, Silverton Mountain is a single lift operation, with no such thing as a cut trail and where the only constants are the snowstorms and the avalanche danger. But it was the perfect place for Red Bull’s Project X. The zone where the halfpipe was built had a natural 18 degree pitch (the perfect pitch for a 22ft pipe), and it was located at the bottom of 8 different avalanche chutes of which their avalanche debris would be the building blocks for the this superpipe. There was no snowmaking here. Located at over 10,000 feet of elevation, all of the snow that went into building this superpipe, first settled over 1000 feet above in the mountain peaks and was avalanched

down to form the base for the pipe build. It was the type of location that would either make Project X famous or infamous. And there was one day when everyone thought that it would be the latter. It was early February and as the Snow Park Technologies crew was putting the final touches on the pipe for our first week of shooting when unexpected weather had quickly moved in. Before we knew it, a blizzard had socked in the mountain and let loose its most vicious and glorious of tidings…feet and feet of snow. We awoke the day before our shoot was supposed to begin to see that the storm had vanished overnight and the crisp, cold, Colorado bluebird sky was here to stay. Frank Wells, lead cutter from Snow Park Technologies was the first one to go in and survey the snowfall. After meeting up with Aaron Brill, the owner of Silverton Mountain, they decided that there would need to be some avalanche control work before anyone could get even close to the pipe, which is located 6 miles from the nearest access road. This meant helicopter access only. As Brill began tossing out bombs to test the snow pack, the rest of the crew had arrived and was staged six miles out on snowmobiles at the trailhead, waiting for word. The helicopter quickly circled back after a few charges had been dropped and upon landing Brill jumped out and ran over. “The good news is,” he said. “You guys are clear to go in. The bad news is that there was so much snow hanging in the chutes it ripped out and buried most of the pipe. You better get in there and check it out.” Upon arrival, we saw a 22 ft superpipe filled with about 15 feet of avalanche debris. There was an eerie calm around the entire crew, was this an omen, a warning sign or a by-product of natural conditions. They said it was a Class 3 avalanche (the classification scale only goes to 5!), ripping all the way to the basin floor. If we thought we were in control, this taught everyone to respect the power that Mother Nature holds over everything. ...continued on page 31

Shaun White... continued from page 27 But like the spirit of the town itself, the team would not be deterred. Working for 24 straight hours, Snow Park Technologies was able to clear the avalanche debris out the pipe and have it ready for the next day’s shoot and it would prove to be arguably the most progressive session in snowboarding history. Shaun White arrived that first day after the avalanche and knew that his vision had become a reality. The 22ft pipe stood majestically against the rugged mountainous backdrop of the San Juan’s and the foam pit was perched perfectly along the wall. All of the elements were in place, now it was up to him to use them. Having the added dimension of the foam pit allowed for something totally new and unique. It gave Shaun the ability to make mistakes. To try and to fail. To get back up again and keep going without risk of injury or getting hurt. It was the defining part of the project as it put Shaun into a new mind state, he crossed a mental boundary and was able to understand something very few snowboarders have truly understood-the double cork. The foam pit allowed Shaun to attempt tricks he never thought would be possible. The one-month training window drove Shaun to push the progression of snowboarding, and he emerged at the Burton New Zealand Open in August ’09 with back-to-back double cork variations, sealing the victory.

...fabulous!

This session would go down in history as arguably the most progressive ever and would prove to the rest of the snowboard world that it was possible to land double corks, setting the stage for a massive leap in snowboarding progression.

Ready.

Go.

Red Bull Project X was more than just a training facility, it was a statement to the snowboard world that Shaun was ready for the Olympics and was going to make his mark not only on this year but on the sport. In the words of Bud Keene, the US Olympic Snowboard coach that was with Shaun in Torino for the Gold said, “I think some people have questioned whether Shaun has been an innovator in his career up until now. He certainly has done anything that anyone has ever done, and done it bigger and better than it had ever been done before. But an innovator? Not until now! Now, he is pushing the sport further and faster than it has ever been pushed, and it looks great!” Red Bull Project X would prove to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Shaun to prove to the world not only who he is as a rider but that now is his time to show the world the best of Shaun White. RICH “Super” POWER A Force to Be Reckoned With By Taff Davies Photos By Tim Tadder With so much focus on MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) these days, more and more people are being drawn away from the United States’ original combat sport, Boxing. If you asked fight fans to name the top 3 pound for pound fighters in MMA, many would be able to name BJ Penn, George St. Pierre, and Anderson Silva. Would they be able to do the same for Boxing? It’s gotten to the point where some sports experts are predicting that Boxing will eventually drift off into obscurity while MMA continues its dizzying climb as the world’s fastest growing sport. However, as MMA and its practitioners have evolved, the game has changed. No longer is the sport dominated by ground fighters and no longer does Grappling win the majority of the matches. Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling are still very important skills for fighters to have in their arsenal, but now Boxing is just as important for success in the Octagon. MMA fighters’ abilities to neutralize ground attacks are constantly increasing, which is why there are more and more knockouts as the level of Boxing increase. Ironically, as long as MMA continues to grow, the need for solid Boxing abilities will continue to grow with it. Enter Rich “Super” Power, San Diego’s newest addition to the professional fighting scene. At 6’5” and 245 lbs., Power stands out in a crowd. But what really sets him apart are his Boxing skills. Currently managed by the same group who managed former Heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, Power is being looked at as a potential star in the Boxing world. A Southpaw, Power is currently 10-0 as a Pro Heavyweight, with 7 wins coming by way of Knockout. He recently moved from his hometown of Detroit to San Diego to further advance his career in Boxing. Although not as well-known for Boxing as it once was, there is still some great Boxing training to be found in San Diego with local trainers like Ernest Johnson Sr., who is father to well-known San Diego boxer Ernest “EJ” Johnson Jr. and trainer to numerous professional and amateur boxers. There is also access to some tough sparring in the So Cal region in gyms like The Rock and Wild Card, where Manny Pacquiao trains. But Power also plans a career in MMA. Seeking the best gym in the country for MMA training, Power chose The Arena, the San Diego MMA gym that houses the largest professional fight team in Southern California. There, Power gets the opportunity to work with numerous high-profile MMA athletes such as 6x World Jiu Jitsu champion Xande Ribeiro. At The Arena, Power instructs these athletes in the finer points of Boxing while getting some hard-core MMA training in return.

32  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

Power has also had the chance to do some serious sparring at The Arena, including going rounds with UFC striking standout Junior Dos Santos, who is being viewed as a potential heavyweight champion in MMA. During these sparring sessions, Power learned there is a big difference between pure Boxing and MMA. But Power is a natural athlete who was both a collegiate boxer as well as collegiate basketball player. CHAMPION

ASP WORLD CHAMP

Heading into the final stop of the 2009 ASP World Tour season, Fanning held the ASP ratings’ lead over fellow Gold Coast surfer Joel Parkinson and with Parkinson’s Round 3 exit in The Billabong Pipe Masters at the hands of wildcard Gavin Gillette (HAW), 23, Fanning secured his second ASP World Title. “I’m just a bit overwhelmed right now and I don’t quite know what to say,” Fanning said. “It was hard out there. I was trying to get ready for my heat and then Gavin (Gillette) got that one score as I was paddling out and, I don’t know, I just sort of slowed down.” For the first time since 2003, the ASP World Title came down to the final event of the season at the Pipeline Masters. “This title is way more fun,” Fanning said. “I was much more relaxed for this one – besides the last few days, I was really nervous.” The 2009 ASP World Tour season will go down in history as one of the most dramatic, with Parkinson winning three of the first five events before Fanning rallied in the latter half of the season to overtake his good friend. “I knew I was surfing well,” Fanning said. “It was just a matter of getting that result. I knew it was going to turn around sooner or later. I don’t know, it’s weird the way the world works.” Fanning’s 2009 ASP World Tour results are as follows: Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast: Equal 3rd Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Equal 5th Billabong Pro Teahupoo: Equal 9th Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro: Equal 5th Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay: Equal 17th Hurley Pro Trestles: WINNER Quiksilver Pro France: WINNER Billabong Pro Mundaka: Equal 9th Rip Curl Pro Search: WINNER Billabong Pipeline Masters: Equal 9th In the end, and reminiscent of Fanning’s 2007 ASP World Title (clinched in Brazil), the lightning-fast natural-footer was in the water with Parkinson (in between heats) as the scene unfolded. The two lifelong friends embraced, exchanged words and paddled in separate directions. “We just sort of sat there and hugged and chatted about what’s happened over the last few days and how nervous we both were,” Fanning said. “It was hard to watch what happened to him this year. He had such a stranglehold on the tour and then he had that ankle injury, so as a friend it was hard to watch that. If I wasn’t in the race I would have been gunning for Joel for sure.” For securing the 2009 ASP World Title, Fanning was also awarded and extra $50,000 from the Vans Triple Threat bonus package.

GILMORE CLAIMS THIRD CONSECUTIVE ASP WORLD TITLE

Rip Curl’s Stephanie Gilmore has become the first surfer, male or female, to claim the ASP World Title the first three years competing on the elite ASP World Tour. By notching a third place finish at the Gidget Pro Sunset Beach, Steph sealed what is undisputedly regarded as the pinnacle of competitive surfing: an ASP World Title. “It’s surreal to win for a third time,” Gilmore said. “It’s amazing! I woke up this morning and knew it was going to be a good day. The waves were building and you sort of get that fuzzy feeling throughout the day. I really don’t even know what to think about it. I just want to thank everyone for the support that I’ve had throughout the whole year.” For Steph, it’s been a year of consistency in competition, and living new experiences during the downtime. The 21 year-old natural footer spent 3 months in the middle of the year living in Orange County, CA working a video blog site with Rip Curl ( ) where she documented trips to New York, surf strikes to Mexico, and much more. Additionally, Steph was crowned SURFER Poll Winner for 2009, a first for her career. And with one event remaining for the 2009 Vans Triple Crown, Steph will no doubt be looking to cement this year with a Triple Crown title as well (she currently sits in 2nd behind Rip Curl teammate Alana Blanchard).

NICOLE PRATT Surfer, Entrepreneur and Inspiration

Birthday: August 15, 1983 Age: 26 Weight: 120 Height: 5’4” Long or short board: Short board Regular or Goofy? Goofy Favorite Surfer: Clay Marzo Favorite surf spot: Cannons in Mazatlan Mexico on a good south swell. It is a perfect left point break that is fun to surf on any board. If you’re a surfer and live in the San Diego area, you may have already seen head turner, Nicole Pratt ripping it up at Imperial Beach or Oceanside. Besides her amazing agility and skill on a board, one of the first things that will strike you about Nicole is her desire to encourage and help others improve their surfing experience. Nicole is very active in the community for promoting surfing for women as well as being a sponsored competitor in various events. RIS: Nicole, why does surfing inspire you so much? NP: Surfing inspires me because it’s much more than a sport it’s a life style that connects you with nature and your surroundings. Surfing is truly a unique experience. It is one of the most peaceful and fluid feelings as you glide across the wave. RIS: Why do you think women comprise the fasting growing group in surfing? NP: I believe a lot of women have always wanted to try the sport but have been intimidated by the ocean and intimidated by the sport because it has been such a male dominated sport for so long. Now because of the media exposure towards women and Hollywood movies starring women surfers has inspired women to try surfing. RIS: Tell us about your Calla Girls. Why would someone want to join? www.callagirlssurf.com NP: Well Calla Girls is a surf club for women I started this club in 2004. I basically want to create a place for female surfers to network with each other, plan surf trips, talk about equipment, and inspire other women through experiences. People join surf clubs because they love to surf. Surf clubs keep you up to date with what’s going on in the industry or your local surf community. They also have get-togethers and fundraisers for local organizations in their community. This is also a great place to socialize and meet new people to surf with. RIS: What are the advantages of learning to surf at a school instead of learning on your own? NP: Well from my personal experience I learned to surf on my own and it’s not impossible but it’s not the way to go. The advantages of surf schools or lessons are you will learn the proper technique. Picking up bad habits from the beginning is not good. Surf Educate (there are unwritten rules of surfing when in the water to keep everyone safe), safety (things you must know before going into the water, surfing can be dangerous if you do not know proper safety techniques), and this will speed up the process of learning to surf. RIS: Why do you choose to teach rather than pursue a professional career? NP: I feel I get more satisfaction out of teaching than I do competing. Teaching allows me to share a part of my world with others, it is so rewarding when you can help someone accomplish a goal they thought they could not reach. RIS: How are men reacting to girls who out surf them? NP: I see a lot of support from the guys they know surfing is very difficult and when they see someone who kills it in the water guy or girl they will definitely give you props. So thanks guys for the support. RIS: What are your professional goals? NP: My professional goals are to open a surf program I designed for inner-city youth, and for Calla Girls to grow to grow to inspire women and children nationwide. MISSION TO THE EDGE OF SPACE

Felix Baumgartner Unveils Plans to break the speed of sound with his own body.

•••• “People have been trying to break my records for fifty years, and many have died in the attempt,” ••••

Pilot Felix Baumgartner announces his intention to expand the boundaries of aerospace exploration by attempting to become the first person ever to break the speed of sound with his own body. Baumgartner hopes to ascend in a capsule lifted by a helium balloon to the upper reaches of the stratosphere to at least 120,000 feet and, protected by a full-pressure “space suit,” launch a freefall jump that could exceed Mach 1.0 – more than 690 miles per hour – before parachuting to Earth. If successful, the Red Bull Stratos mission hopes to establish four world records; the data captured by the mission’s world-leading scientists could promise new standards in aerospace safety and enhanced possibilities for human flight. In a dramatic landscape draped in black and lit in blue on the 40 th floor of a New York high-rise, United States Air Force Colonel (Ret.) Joseph Kittinger, who in 1960 launched a stratospheric jump from 102,800 feet that opened the door for space exploration, and whose records Baumgartner aims to break, introduced the Austrian pilot to media from around the world during a briefing in New York City. “People have been trying to break my records for fifty years, and many have died in the attempt,” Kittinger said. “But I believe that with our unique assets, an extraordinary mission team, the dedication of Red Bull, and Baumgartner’s outstanding skills, Red Bull Stratos will succeed.” Kittinger, Baumgartner (best known for being the first person to fly across the English Channel with a carbon wing in 2003), Red Bull Stratos Medical Director Dr. Jonathan Clark and Technical Project Director Art Thompson provided an overview of the mission, which will we will expect to launch in North America with a target launch date in 2010.

42  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

“This is truly a step into the unknown. No one can accurately predict how the human body will react in the transition to supersonic speeds,” said Baumgartner. “But we’ve got to find out. Future aerospace programs need a way for pilots and astronauts to bail out at high altitude in case of emergency.” Clark, who served as a crew surgeon for six Space Shuttle missions, confirmed that data captured from the mission will be shared with the scientific community, and noted that he expects long-awaited medical protocols to be established as a result. He also commented, “I think one of the most profound benefits of Red Bull Stratos is going to be the inspiration for our youth… The kind of stuff Felix is doing is like the early astronauts and cosmonauts.” Red Bull Stratos has secured specialized technical communications from Riedel Communications that will facilitate the coverage of the Red Bull Stratos mission with a live TV broadcast and live webcast delivered by Microsoft Silverlight. In parallel the mission will also be streamed on mobile platforms through a mobile application powered by Ovi by Nokia. Global broadcaster, the BBC, will produce a special 90-minute documentary, which will air exclusively in the US on the National Geographic Channel and be distributed globally to national broadcasters by BBC Worldwide. INTERVIEW

PENNYWISE

because of Pennywise, and it’s great. Fletcher actually wants to video tape our recording process. The stuff we say to each other is so cutting, hurtful, and mean, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the songs we are working on. It’s just a group of friends ragging on each other. It’s pretty funny. RIS: Speaking of Fletcher, he had said that you bring a new passion back to the band. What do you feel you bring to Pennywise? Zoli: We were just talking about that. Because I stand for a lot of different causes, I want to sit down with the band and talk about them. I’ve been rescuing Pelicans for about 15 years now. When I was a teen I was thrown in Jail, so I had to work it off somewhere. I opened a book for the judge and pointed to a picture of a pelican, and he sent me to work at this rehab center. From there I got involved with the Sea Sheppard Conservation Society. My family is European, so we had to move over there when I was a kid. I ended up being raised in a communist country, so I was politically educated from an early age. So when I got back to the states, I became very involved in political causes. I want to try to add some of that passion into our music. We are working really hard to write an album that emulates Pennywise’s earlier work, with melodic music and aggressive vocals. We want to tour as much as possible, and play for Pennywise fans all over the world. To me the live shows are most important. I think this new album is going to be either a make or break album. So I’m putting 100% into it. RIS: As far as all the music, you basically had to learn every “verse” of every Pennywise song. Is that something you have already known through the years, or is this something you really had to focus on? Zoli: Yeah, the verses have a lot of word in them. I knew the choruses “we’re the ones, only ones, strong ones, proud ones, we’re living for today.” Jim from Pennywise sings the songs on the top of the verse. Almost like the vocals start the music. With Ignite, and the Misfits, and some of the other bands I’ve been a part of, we’d start at the back of the beat, which meant the vocals were placed at the back of the songs. This is a completely opposite “verse way” then what I’m use to singing. Which is kind of cool, because now I get to learn a different way to sing, and write songs. RIS: When are we going to be able to hear the New Album? Zoli: We’ve got about 15 songs right now. One is almost completely finished. I don’t want to rush this album. Everyone who is a Pennywise fan will buy this album, just because they are curious about how it’s going to sound. So if the album sucks, they are not going to buy the next one. My whole purpose is to help them make this the best album Pennywise has ever done. RIS: Do you feel a lot of pressure stepping into Jim’s shoes? Zoli: Yeah, because there are a lot of people with Pennywise tattoo’s. Pennywise has fans that really, really believe in them. It’s not like a Nickelback fan that just likes the lyrics or the harmony. Pennywise fans have been raised for 20 years on the music. These guys are diehard fans, and I don’t want to let them down. I’m the new singer in their (the fans) band. I want to make sure I don’t let them down, musically or on stage. RIS: Let’s talk about your causes. You and your family are pretty involved with the Pacific Wildlife Project, what is that all about?

NEW FRONT MAN ZOLI TEGLAS...“I’m putting 100% into it!” By Leslie Krouse Pennywise is one of the most significant bands to emerge from Southern California’s second wave of punk rock. Formed in 1988 in Hermosa Beach, California, Pennywise has released nine full-length studio albums; one live album; two extended plays; and one DVD. Their most recent studio effort, Reason to Believe, was released to over 500,000 fans for free through a limited offering from Myspace Records. The critically acclaimed album was also sold physically and digitally the world over. “The Western World,” the first single from this watershed album, quickly became the most successful single of the band’s storied career. After months of searching, the members of Pennywise announced that Ignite vocalist Zoli Teglas is now officially the new front man. After the sudden departure of former singer Jim Lindberg, a member of Pennywise for 19 years, guitarist Fletcher Dragge called Teglas a “natural choice” to take over the vocal duties for the band. Calling it quits was never in the cards for the remaining members of Pennywise. “We love this, we love going on the road,” Dragge explains, “There’s nothing more important to me than being on stage in front of our fans and having them sing our lyrics back at us and feel the energy. This has become so much bigger than just us as a band. It’s become a family and a brotherhood of people that I feel depend on us.” The second I heard that Pennywise had given the lead to Zoli; I got straight on the phone and set up this interview. I’m glad I did. Here is some insight into the man who has jumped into a position most musicians may have shied away from. Taking on Pennywise Fans! RIS: Congratulations! So how is this new experience treating you? Zoli: Great, I’ve known these guys for a long time. I always jumped on their bus when we’d go on tour with them. It’s fun; we’d play practical jokes on each other. I come from a totally different writing style. Working with Pennywise is making my writing style move forward by leaps and bounds. I’m becoming a much better writer

44  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

Zoli: My brother is the head veterinarian for Pacific Wildlife. It’s a rehab center for sea birds in Laguna Niguel. I started a non-profit organization called Pelican Rescue. I work with Danny Thompson, drummer for Face to Face, he’s a really cool guy, and he’s out there helping to rescue these birds quite a bit. We go out about 3 times a week to rescue injured birds. There was just an oil spill off the coast: the Ocean is a fucking mess right now. We also get a lot of musician volunteers from the punk rock community. It’s cool, because if you have any outstanding moving violations (tickets), and you come and volunteer to help rescue some birds, instead of paying the man (Fuck the Authority) I can write the tickets off. The United States Fish and Game, have licensed me to write off tickets for people that help out. You can sign up for the coarse, I think it costs $50.00, but we just had a guy out there that owed about 2 grand, he volunteered, and we signed the tickets off. I’ll save you some money. If you’re interested you can sign-up on to the site at www.pacificwildlife.org RIS: Who are your influences, music wise? Zoli: I listen to a lot of Pennywise. I also listen to the Misfits, and Bad Brains. English punk rock bands like, GBH and One Way System, and a lot of Social Distortion, and a lot of Black Flag. Those are my influences, right there. RIS: Any shout outs? Zoli: I want to say WHAT’S UP to my friends at the Sea Sheppard Conservation Society; they are in Antarctica right now. They have stopped Japanese whalers from killing for the last 3 weeks. And I want to say what’s up to my dad; he just had open-heart surgery. He’s so stoked I’m playing for Pennywise, and I want to send him my love. Wow, what a great guy, with a big heart, and an even bigger voice. I think he and Pennywise make a great fit. Be sure to catch them here in San Diego on March 12 at the HOB, or come hang with us up in Reno at the wrap up party for the Ultimate Border.

T.S.O.L

(True Sound Of Liberty) When T.S.O.L. blasted onto the Orange County punk explosion in 1979 with white face paint, 6’ plus frames and blazing punk anthems, they were automatically a force to be reckoned with. Their previous band, Vicious Circle, had already established themselves in the South Bay and Orange County with large crowds and several riots at historical venues such as the Cuckoo’s Nest and the Fleetwood. With the boost of the now classic Poshboy EP that introduced the songs “Superficial Love” and “Abolish Government”, TSOL picked up where Vicious Circle left off, but with an armory full of ammunition. This enabled the band to spread it’s popularity around California, supporting heavyweights like The Damned and The Dead Kennedy’s in big cities like LA and San Francisco. By the summer of ’81, the band released the highly anticipated debut full length LP, Dance With Me (Frontier), which propelled the band to the highest echelon of Southern California punk status, and enabled them to headline 3000+ seat venues (ala the Hollywood Palladium) with bands like Bad Religion, Social Distortion and the Adolescents opening for them. There were obvious reasons why TSOL was so huge so fast: They were cuter, their songs were catchier and their live show was a lot more energetic and fun then any other band going. They single handedly initiated the influx of girls into the early 80’s punk scene. With songs about fucking the dead, “Code Blue” and gothic punk ballads like “Silent Scream”, they became the first punk “phenomenon”; it was the “OC Invasion”. Jack Grisham, Ron Emory, Mike Roche and Todd Barnes were four kids who grew up together in Huntington Beach; now they were the talk of the West Coast. The band moved on to Alternative Tentacles records, where they released the Weathered Statues EP; here they introduced the reggae-tinged “Word Is” alongside the blistering “Man and Machine”. That gave the fans something to chew on while the title track hinted at the direction the band was heading as they put together their masterpiece,

their punk-opera so to speak: Beneath the Shadows. It was at this time when the band was featured in the motion picture “Suburbia”, directed by Penelope Spheeris (Wayne’s World, Decline of Western Civilization, etc.), a stark semi-documentary on the punk scene of early ‘80s Orange County. The band appeared both in the film and on the film’s soundtrack.

But with their enormous popularity, and their first tours, the foundation began to crack. Excessiveness and things that go along with “bigness” forced changes, including the departure of Jack and Todd, leaving behind a band that was well on the way, to instead regressing to a more primitive punk sound that quickly stagnated and alienated fans.

Beneath the Shadows (Alternative Tentacles), the band’s second full length LP, showed just how much the band had rapidly matured. It wasn’t a breakaway from their previous releases; it was a progression. The band added keyboards and the arrangements became more complex and stylized; it made one think that the London Symphony might be touring with them in the future. As other bands of their genre fumbled around “into the unknown”, TSOL forged a new sound, one that didn’t turn fans away, but made them even more numerous and rabid.

Today, T.S.O.L. has signed with DC-Jam Records to release “Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Free Downloads” on limited edition colored vinyl. The band is back to give us what they gave then. “Superficial Love”, “80 Times”, “Code Blue”, “Wash Away” and the rest of those vintage punk nuggets will be blasted live into our faces again. Those who were not around to witness TSOL in their heyday can finally see for themselves why the band spawned a generation of bands and changed the shape of music today.

ANGELS & AIRWAVES • LOVE

By music editor Leslie Krouse

Genre – Alt/Neo-progressive /Rock

‘LOVE’ is the appropriate title for this album. You can feel the passion that drenches every note. A year in the making, it surprised me that the album was released free of charge due to “corporate underwriting.” Great for us! ‘Love’ starts like you might expect an Angels & Airwaves album to, with its synthesizers, cycled drum patterns, and heavy use of electronic equipment; this is a true testimate to Tom Delonge’s ultimate dream of creating more mature sounding music. DeLonge has compared the album’s space rock influenced sound to that of U2 and Pink Floyd. After the methodical 2:34 second intro, you are lured into ‘The Flight of the Apollo,’ which starts off with soothing synths. Then DeLonge joins in with the haunting lyrics “I’m floating, and something’s reaching out,” “please help us, we’re running out of time, my brothers,” “we fucked up, lets give ourselves a hand,” then immediately followed by ripping guitars and crashing drums, it’s apparent that this is a new level for A&A, and not just another side project. Another track that stands out is, ‘Hallucinations’ which allows A&A to lead its listeners to an alternate universe. I dig the singing guitar riffs in ‘Young London.’ The free download of the album will contain eleven tracks, but a physical copy of the album is also going to be released which will contain the same eleven tracks along with 30 minutes of extra music from the ‘Love’ movie. ALKALINE TRIO

VINYL REVIEWS

Alkaline Trio has announced the release of their forthcoming album, This Addiction, on February 23 via Epitaph Records/Heart & Skull. Recorded and produced by the band with help from longtime cohort Matt Allison at Atlas Studios in Chicago, This Addiction marks Alkaline Trio’s first release on their imprint label Heart & Skull and first with their parent label Epitaph Records. The album also finds the Trio revisiting their punk roots while moving forward creatively. The album’s title track and first single wastes no time in setting the tone of the album as it rips and roars with Matt Skiba’s exceptional vocals and signature guitar riffs, bassist and co/vocalist Dan Andriano’s thumping low-end and drummer Derek Grant’s steadfast beats. From soon-to-be fan-favorites like the Andriano led rocker “Dine, Dine My Darling” and politically charged anthem “The American Scream” to the sonically mesmerizing rhythm and lyrics of “Dorothy” and the thrilling sing-along “Draculina,” This Addiction showcases Skiba, Andriano and Grant’s abounding gift for songwriting and crafting passionate punk fueled rock that will make fans fall in love with them all over again.

Spoon’s seventh studio album, ‘Transference,’ was produced by Spoon. With Spoon now taking over all their own production duties, front man Britt Daniel spoke about producing ‘Transference’ and why it he referred to it as “pure Spoon.” Transference strikes a balance between its early Indie-rock and the soulful deconstructed pop of its 2007 release, “Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.” The hammering piano keys, edgy guitar riffs, and pounding drums on the sure to be break-through single “Written in Reverse” add an portentous feel to the set, as Spoon front man Britt Daniel’s voice teeters between punchy and afflicted. “I’m writing this to you in reverse/ someone better call a hearse,” he sings, while also referencing drug hazes and blank stares. The harmonistic guitar and mysterious, almost ominous beats of “Who Makes Your Money” creates an atmospheric dreaminess, while tension is built with snarling lyrics, buried piano and crushing guitar riffs on “Got Nuffin.” On album closer “Nobody Gets Me but You,” Spoon finally comes undone, melding electronic pulses, strings and pounding drums in a combination of bounce and grit that goes down smoothly. Subway - Subway II

2XLP $24.99 Amazing new album of krautrock-inspired beauty! Definitely a favorite here at the Calsound office. A very beautiful soundtrack for zoning out and gettin’ work done!! Subway II, the debut album by Subway on Soul Jazz Records, is a startling cosmic marriage of influences – German electronic rock music from the 1970s (Cluster, Kraftwerk, Neu, Harmonia, Ash Ra Tempel), 80s Detroit science fiction techno (Carl Craig, Juan Atkins, Jeff Mills) and a hint of Italian and European disco (Danielle Baldelli meets Cerrone, Space, Moroder and Jean Michel Jarre). Subway are Michael Kirkman and Alan James and have been releasing music since 2000. Subway II was recorded at home in East London using a plethora of analog equipment and techniques t hat enabled them to create sound reflecting cityscapes such as Berlin, Dussseldorf, Detroit and Paris whilst at the same time creating a contemporary musical commentary of London in 2009. This album is a cosmic progression of post-dance music, focused more on meditative thought and space than one made for the dancefloor, yet still encompassing the rhythm and constant beat at the heart. With three previous sell-out singles on Soul Jazz Records (Simplex, Satellites and 4410), an album ‘Empty Head’ (released in 2005) as well as a string of one-off projects, the group are currently name-checked by everyone from Hot Chip to DFA, Prinz Thomas to Carl Craig, with good reason. ‘Subway II’ is a fitting conceptual statement of their current sound. Cosmic, post-dance, organic, meditative and hypnotic. All titles available at www.calsound.com * Coupon Code: “Revolt” to receive 10% off

So Eisner will be “scaling up” the movie but keeping Romero’s cautionary message to beware of the government’s use of the military and to beware of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. Eisner also felt that Romero’s movie was made in the shadow of Vietnam and that while he was prepping the remake the country was in the shadow of war again with the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Eisner thinks that the current slew of 70s remakes may also stem from “a nostalgia for filmmakers remembering the experience of watching those movies.” By Beth Accomando George A. Romero may be regarded as the man who raised Geo the dead and created the zombie genre. But he made one of the first “infected people” movies as well. His 1973 horror film The Crazies served up a premise in which people did not become reanimated corpses but rather were infected with a disease that made them, well, crazy… and dangerous. Now 39-year-old director Breck Eisner is remaking Romero’s film. Eisner describes himself as a Romero fan and liked the fact that this isn’t a zombie film. “The infected people are not undead,” Eisner told me, “in fact they are more alive than they have ever been. The disease itself, the infection, unlocks their inner demons. So unlike a zombie movie where victims are undead and lose their real persona as they develop a singular goal to infect other people or eat human flesh or brains, when the people in The Crazies are infected their persona remains and it just heightens their persona. pe I think it makes it more interesting because each time you run into one of these infected people they’re different, they act different, they respond different and you don’t know if they are infected or not but they still are your husband or your wife or your father or mother or your best friend and it makes it that much more terrifying.” So what proves terrifying is not knowing if someone is infected: “Are they infected enough to have to take action? Are they infected enough to have to leave them behind? Are they a threat? Do they still retain enough of their humanity that the person is the person that you knew before the infection? It brings up a lot of really interesting questions and drama and tensions.” But why, you may ask, is it necessary to remake another Romero film? According to Eisner, “I liked the idea of redoing this one because it has a great idea at its core but I really believed that it suffered from a real limitation, which was the miniscule budget that they had to work with. I think he made the movie originally for $200,000. In a movie where the plotline is the oppressive force of the military as a means of cont controlling a population, it’s tough to do that with absolutely no budget.”

Working with a bigger budget and having more time than Romero, Eisner was able to location scout to find what he felt was the perfect landscape for the film: “I wanted a Main Street city but not a perfect utopian vision of America. I wanted something that was slightly decayed, a throwback version. So there aren’t McDonalds and a bunch of chains but the remnants of what had been. At the same time it had to be big, vast, open, epic plains. So that when the characters are trying to escape from the military and the infected there’s nowhere to hide.” The Crazies joins the recent Last House on the Left and Texas Chainsaw Massacre as a 70s horror remake. But audiences are probably less familiar with this early, less widely distributed Romero film. As for Eisner, he may not stay in the horror genre but he confesses, “I love genre movies. I love horror because it’s a heightened genre and it allows you to peel back the layers of a character and get to those animalistic qualities. And another thing I love about horror is the movie going experience. Horror movies in a theater are so fun to watch. They’re interactive.” You can interact with the horrors of The Crazies on Feb 26

Shutter Island

Paramount Pictures Well Leo tries out another accent (would that be Boston?) and Scorsese tries his hand at an insane asylum thriller. I’m hoping that now that Marty has his Oscar he can go back to making good movies like he used to. Remember those days? When he made films like Taxi Driver and Goodfellas? Shutter Island looks to be in the same mode as his Cape Fear – decent genre flick but nothing to push the envelope. Rating - RR Opens February 19.

Creation Alice In Wonderland

Walt Disney Pictures Okay is this going to just be weird Burton and Depp (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) or genius Burton and Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood). Hard to tell. But Alice will be pushing Avatar out of the 3D screens (which is good news) and visually it looks like an awesome acid trip. Rating - RR Opens March 5.

New Market Films Evolutionary but not revolutionary. Charles Darwin is the focus of this biopic as the scientist finds his ideas on evolution coming in direct conflict with the views of his religious wife. Real life husband and wife Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly play the leads. Scientific research doesn’t always make for thrilling cinema but this film tries to find the drama in Darwin’s personal life and professional controversy. Rating - RRRR

The Ghost Writer

Roman Polanski has been making the news recently but less for his film and more for his personal life. The director was prevented from attending the premiere of his film at the Berlin Film Festival because he was under house arrest in Switzerland and facing possible extradition to the U.S. for a decades-old charge of unlawful sex with a 13-year-old. Meanwhile, Polanski’s film deals with a ghostwriter hired to finish a former British prime minister’s memoirs and in the process he uncovers secrets that suddenly put his life in jeopardy. You can decide which drama is the more interesting one to follow. Rating - RR Opens February 26.

Universal Pictures The fourth film in the Bourne franchise… oh wait this isn’t Matt Damon as Jason Bourne going rogue and causing problems for his fellow spies? My bad. This is Matt Damon as Roy Miller, a U.S. army officer who goes rogue after discovering some bad intel and who decides to look for WMDs in an unstable region. Damon does re-team with his Bourne director Paul Greengrass for this routine spy thriller. Rating - RRR Opens March 12.

Marijuana is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known. No one has ever died from an overdose, and it has a wide variety of therapeutic applications: Marijuana is frequently beneficial in the treatment of the following conditions: • AIDS- Marijuana can reduce the nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite caused by the ailment itself and by various AIDS medications. • Glaucoma- Marijuana can reduce interlobular pressure, thereby alleviating the pain and slowing -and sometimes stopping -- the progress of the condition. (Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the United States. It damages vision by increasing eye pressure over time.) • Cancer- Marijuana can stimulate the appetite and alleviate nausea and vomiting, which are common side effects of chemotherapy treatment. • Multiple Sclerosis- Marijuana can limit the muscle pain and spasticity caused by the disease, as well as relieving tremor and unsteadiness of gait. Handicap RAMp Oh Aries, it’s been so long since you pretended to fall for the laughs of others - so long in fact that when you crashed down the stairs at that Super Bowl party we all laughed and laughed, loving your shenanigans. Until we realized you were actually hurt. Get well soon. And sorry about that dirty word I wrote on your cast. Don’t Be BULLigerant Your recent ex certainly deserved that tongue-lashing, but the statements you made about their genitalia were almost too horrible, Taurus. Almost - keep working at it and those days of playing Doormat will remain a distant memory. GEMINIute Man Well, that creepy position you like scared off another one! Really, Gemini, if that’s the only way you can keep yourself from premature ejaculation then what’s the point?

Miss CLEO You need to quit spending money on phone psychics inquiring about that person on Match.com you’ve never even met. You of all people need that money more than ever. Foot fungus can’t fix itself! (That’ll be $3.50 a minute, please.) The Rhythm’s VIRGOnna Getchya You deliberately wear painful shoes when you know your friends are going out dancing just so you have an excuse. Number one: Those shoes are ugly. And quit eyeing the body pillows at Target - that sort of thing will lead you down a very lonely path. You’ve got charms - put them to use and quit sleeping alone. At least you won’t have to empty your bedroom trashcan so frequently.

Launch The SCORPIOeedos! Much like Scorpio and drag queen extraordinaire RuPaul, you’ve got your own little secret to keep tucked away from public eye. The only difference is that Ru looks fabulous while doing it. Quit acting like you’ve been caught and making that scared face all the time - your regular face is already scary enough. Sonny and ARCHER Your karaoke repertoire needs to be brought back up to speed, Sagittarius. I know you have embarrassingly younger friends - get them to burn you some music ASAP. You’re too lovable to look this old and played out. CAPRICORNered Big surprise - all those mates you were juggling found out about each other and set your lawn on fire. Again. Now you’ll have to start building your harem from scratch. Just make sure to put a pass code on your cell phone next time, Stupid. WATER-BEARER Your Soul You wanna mock everyone who doesn’t dress, think, talk and drive like you. That’s why nobody likes you, Aquarius, and why they do horrible things to your food and drink when you step away at restaurants. Open your mind to how boring the world would be if we were all you - and how awfully smug it’d be as well.
