PUBLISHER’S NOTE
I
t’s a Wonderful Life. Christmas Story. Home Alone. Watching all these classics this Holiday season... one thing in common. Snow! Growing up in Northern California, I spent plenty of time in the white stuff. Not a ton, but enough. I can remember snowball fights with the neighborhood freaks, trudging thru the snow until my fingers & toes were frozen. Who could forget the countless trips to the nearby Cascade mountains to tear up the slopes with our crew? Those were the days... Do I miss it? Sure, nostalgia is great. Makes ya’ kinda weepy. Do I really miss it? Nah! Not on your life! Leslie & I are perfectly happy here in Southern California. Especially this Christmas. Mid seventies. Wearing shorts & flips. Sun’s out & the waves are firing. We’re stayin put... for now. If you are thinking of heading up to the snow, you know where it’s all going down. Big Bear & Snow Summit. They’re open & that’s where you want to go. Already a couple of good storms have pushed thru & more are on the way. Even so, they make their own snow every night so there’s a plenty of coverage up there. Btw: Big Bear is running some great specials right now - if you go to our website, we can hook you up with discount lift tickets and season passes. Check it out. www.revoltinstyle.com OK - Speaking of Snow... we have a great event coming up in January. The first annual Snow Down at Thrusters in PB. Nick Z is a madman. He pulled permits for a new snow festival (of sorts). A satellite viewing party for the Winter X Games finals, Jan 25th. In the parking lot, all day, Thrusters & Revolt In Style will host an event of epic proportions. Red Bull is dragging in Jumbo-Trons & Dj’s to watch all the action & get the party bumpin’. We’ll sample craft beers & winter cocktails. Gourmet food trucks will feed us all. We’ll be giving away lift tickets to Bear & all kinds of cool swag. Do not miss this one! I hope you enjoy this issue, we worked especially hard on this one for you. We went back to the dual cover format, Entertainment one direction, Action content the other. This issue also contains the eighth annual Holiday Gift Guide. We take all the guess work out of buying the perfect gift or hooking up a loved one with the Ultimate Stocking Stuffer. Merry Christmas! We also have Interviews with Rise Against, Derek Dunfee and even Pastor Steve from Newbreak Church (Holiday appropriate). We speak with MX champion Colton Udall about the Baja 1000 and the passing of his friend, mentor and hero, Kurt Caselli during the race. Strong stuff, hope it inspires you, like it did me. If I’m thankful for anything this Holiday season, it’s my wife. She’s the strongest person I know. Personal tragedy has surrounded her in 2013. First with the loss of her daughter, then the passing of her dad a few months later. I can’t even imagine. I’ve never had to deal with anything like that & dread the day that I do. But through it all, she just soldiered on & handled it. Handled everything! The mag is still in print, & the Revolt Summer Surf Series went off without a hitch. This during, what I’m pretty sure, were the worst days of her life. I’m sure anyone else would have lost it. I would have lost it, no doubt. Sad times for sure. Plenty of tears, questions & blame. But we’re still here... you have to continue on & yes, we have each other. Yes, I’m extremely thankful for my wife. Love ya girl! And on that note. I think my work here is done. I’m gonna grab another cup of Kono’s coffee (thanks Mikee) & check out the waves. Keep an eye on the website & Revolt social media. We have a big surprise for everyone next year! Revolt In Style. Happy Holidays B&L

BREW PACIFIC BEACH
AMPLIFIED ALE WORKS www.amplifiedaleworks.com 4150 Mission Blvd Ste 208 Pacific Beach, CA 92109
THE CRAFT WHAT WENT DOWN?
A sampling of fantastic hand crafted beers along with delicious food & interesting conversation. We tried a spectrum of beers from Blondes to IPAs, and even impressive private stock sours. The wait staff was friendly and informed. The toasty heaters on the patio made the ocean breeze bareable. Amplified turns up the volume on the flavors, the music, the experience. Clay Walker came away with these reviews:
THE PERFECT PAIR
Leggy Blonde: ABV (Alcohol by volume): 5.5% IBU (International Bittering Units): 15 Served: Draft to Nonic pint, temperature low to mid 40’s F Appearance: Straw with a thick white foamy head which left a little lace on the glass Aroma: Yeast esters, European malts Flavor: Pear, pronounced yeast Mouthfeel: Dry Details: Superbly drinkable, this beer is underplayed. Positioned as a standard light beer substitute, its low ABV and incredible flavor and finish make it a superior choice to a macro brew any day of the week. This would make a fantastic everyday beer.
Owners Alex Pierson, JC Hill and Brewmaster Cy Henley
THE PERFECT STORM
JC Hill & Alex Pierson opened the first California Kebab in 2009 at San Diego State University. The California-inspired Mediterranean-themed menu was a hit with the hungry (and thirsty) college students. They installed a customized Kegerator at their restaurant soon after opening to showcase a rotating variety of local beers. Meanwhile, JC began a homebrewing hobby in his Crown Point garage that soon turned into his new obsession. Boom. Amplified Ale Works. Their following (and demand) for the beer began to grow... the two entrepreneurs knew they were onto something good. In 2012 they decided to move from SDSU to the Pacific Beach area and set up shop with a three barrel brewery and two, seven barrel fermenters. Not only was the Promenade a great location for a restaurant / brewpub, but it also has one of the best views of the Pacific Ocean around. Not long after the move, they decided to expand their in-house brewery, and shift the restaurant’s focus onto the beer, while keeping the menu the same. A mutual bartender friend recommended Cy Henley to JC. Cy, formerly of Alpine Brewing Co & Ballast Point, had the experience that they were looking for. The three hit it off and The Perfect Storm of Craft Brewing was formed. Amplified Ale Works just recently added four serving tanks and an additional seven barrel fermenter to streamline brewery operations by eliminating kegs, and allow extra fermentation space. JC explained, “This will allow us to brew particular staples like Electrocution IPA and Leggy Blonde year round, and keep at least four of our beers flowing at all times.” Amplified Ale Works specializes in hoppy, West Coast style ales, lively and sessionable ales & lagers, and a variety of unique, experimental batches across all styles. Top it off with a cool menu, an ocean view patio and you have a neighborhood craft brew pub worth a closer look. Continue on...

Skewer Platter: Alaskan Salmon, Pomegranate Sirloin, herb marinated chicken and Garlic Pepper Shrimp with Parmesan Fried Zucchini on a bed of Sweet & Citrus salad w/ pomegranate vinagarette. Perfection on a grand scale. Electrocution IPA ABV: 8% IBU: 65 Served: Draft to pitcher to Nonic pint, temperature around mid to high 40’s F Appearance: Pale Gold with a thick white foamy head - left plenty of lace on the way down. Aroma: Pine and citrus, very pungent Flavor: Hop-forward, resinous clean citrusy hop. Mouthfeel: Dry with a hint of residual sweetness Details: The grain bill consists of almost entirely base malt; Cy doesn’t like to use a lot of crystal malt. Hops additions include Simcoe, Citra, and Amarillo and are added mostly at flameout and dryhop stages with very little added at the start of the boil. While intensely hoppy, this beer is less bitter than it tastes and is well balanced. Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad ABV: 14% IBU: 25 Served: Wax dipped bottle to shot glass Appearance: Dark black, no head Aroma: vanilla, bourbon, & black cherries Flavor: fig, raisins, more vanilla and burnt caramel, dark chocolate Mouthfeel: Fat Details: A testament to Cy’s fascination with aging and sours, easily the best local sour I’ve had. The amount of oak is balanced with respect to the other flavors, a rarity when it comes to barrel aged beers.
THE D&A
Co-Written by drinking buddies with contrasting styles, the D&A is an experiment, an adventure & above all a good time.
On one hand we have The Digital: Complex insight from a self proclaimed ‘Beer Nerd’ who speaks the language of Craft Brewing... fluently. On the other hand, The Analog is your laid back Craft Beer connoisseur who simply knows what he likes & enjoys the share. Behold: The D & A of Craft Brew!
THE ANALOG
THE DIGITAL
Per Jeremy Reed (The Dude)
Per Clay Walker (The Brain) Amplified is an unassuming brewpub and I expected par for the course for their beer. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I not only underestimated them but that they have a few things setting them apart from their competition.
Finally my bombshell amber haired wife agreed to a “hall pass”. We can’t all be so lucky and so in recognizing my chance, I took full advantage of the situation knowing the opportunity may never come again. Hmmmm: redhead, brunette, raven, or blonde?
A recent addition to Amplified’s hardware lineup and foyer are several brite tanks which are to be used as serving tanks in lieu of kegging (think of them as giant kegs). This reduces the amount of labor involved and lowers the risk of contaminating the beer. A brilliant idea all around.
Redheads; too complicated. Brunettes; too complex. Ravens; too intense. Blondes; hall pass heaven. Easy on the eyes, nothing too complicated, and you can drive home afterwards with no regret. To be up front, I’m a hophead, high alcohol, amber loving beer guy, not overly excited to drink anything that doesn’t say Double or Imperial on the label. Session ales routinely struggle with me in the flavor and enjoyment department. But then there are those pleasant surprises in life that make it worth living; cue the Leggy Blonde.
Amplified has recently expanded their brewing operations to a large storage area below the restaurant. The new storage area will act as grain storage, a cellar, and an aging cave for Cy’s aging and sour experiments.
Sitting in Amplified Ale works, she showed up at our table and I barely got her name. Having been surrounded by blondes here in San Diego for years now, they don’t really get a second look from me, that is until I wrapped my hands around this one; a 4% bombshell that makes all the other session girls jealous at the club. Lili Von Shtupp herself could not have hidden a more devious personality behind such a sexy blonde veneer.
Finings (clarifying additives) have advanced considerably from the traditional Irish moss, isinglass, and gelatin of old. Amplified uses Clarity Ferm, an enzyme that breaks down proteins that cause cold beer to appear cloudy. It has the additional ability to break down gluten, typically to near FDA gluten free levels (less than 20ppm). Although they do not make any claims about or test their product for gluten, I found this an interesting anecdote.
Clean, simple design, perfect mouth feel, and more complexity than the killer brew masters (JC and CY) at Amplified give her credit for. My first sip of the blonde was right after a pint of the epic Electrocution IPA. Normally this would be like taking a Vespa to work after a week at the Ducati test track, but not today. The Leggy Blonde is a sleeper session ale, underestimated until the light goes green.
Overall, Amplified is creating some incredible beer and showing a lot of promise in aging and sours. While you can currently only get Amplified at the source, I’m looking forward to the day I can find their beer on draft around town, purchase kegs from them, and find their sour and aged beers at the bottle shop.
Contributing writers Clay Walker and Jeremy Reed sampling some of Amplified Ale Works’ finest.
Now the hall pass is over and the wife wants to know… blondes or ambers? We all have our favorites and mine hasn’t changed since the first day I tried her, but….if I was going to stray (not saying I will), but if I was, you’d find me at Amplified Ale Works with a Leggy Blonde, most likely one in each arm.

s San Diego’s cocktail culture continues to grow and flourish, some of the city’s most innovative bartenders have united to create Rumbling Tins Co., a new cocktail consulting consortium. Based out of Normal Height’s Sycamore Den cocktail lounge the group includes bar masters Eric Johnson (Sycamore Den), Leigh Lacap (Sycamore Den/Craft & Commerce), Christian Siglin (Banker’s Hill Bar and Restaurant), Alex Maynard (Craft & Commerce) and David Kinsey (Sycamore Den). The crew aims to offer their mixology expertise on topics ranging from spirits and bar equipment selection, to cocktail menu development, to private events— on a project basis. Rumbling Tins Co., named for the group’s desire to make noise on the cocktail scene, was created to meet the growing demand for sustainable cocktail programs that combine both uncompromising quality and profitability, while staying true to the imbibing concept’s aesthetic. The group’s philosophy places the utmost importance on education— extracting from its diverse professional backgrounds what will best serve an establishment and its patrons.
“A poorly executed cocktail program can feel distant and unapproachable,“ says Johnson. “In our experience this ultimately alienates guests and staff. Our job is to make a window where there was once a wall.”

BARREL REPUBLIC FREEDOM - TO POUR YOUR OWN CRAFT BEERS
A
nd now for something completely different. A new (self serve) Craft Beer Mart that allows you to try whatever you want, when you want it. But to simply call it a new venue would be an understatement. Barrel Republic is a new and ingenious business model, for Craft Beer sales. Specializing in Barrel aged beers, Barrel Republic is a Mecca for craft beer lovers to come and experience pure freedom: the freedom to pour, freedom to compare, freedom to be amongst other like minded craft beer enthusiasts. Located in the heart of the Pacific Beach, Barrel Republic is the brainchild of David Pike, also owner of the San Diego Soccers. Pike decided to push the envelope with Barrel Republic. 44 craft beers online, huge screens for all major sporting events, awesome local food trucks out back. Inside the decor is made up of reclaimed wood, ambient lighting from the overhead skylights and comfortable seating arrangements. A warm and inviting environment that gives all of its patrons the privilege to pour their own beer. Whether its a taster or a pint, YOU have the freedom to pour. While the concept has been utilized elsewhere in much smaller capacities, no one had thought to bring such a large and diverse selection of craft beers together in one place, at one time, to be sampled as the patron desires. Of course there are limitations. When 32 ounces in total have been sampled the taps will temporarily close until the patron can be evaluated by staffers. This is how consumption is monitored and approval from lawmakers was granted. We met with the new GM Robert Kilborne who graciously gave us the tour of the facilities. Kilborne, obviously well educated and versed in the Craft Beer industry, was eager to share his knowledge. We enjoyed his exuberance in describing the beers, the operation and the informative staff. We were surprised to learn he was a retired marine who, after winding up in a wheelchair with a debilitating battlefield injury (told he would never walk again). Soldiered on thru years of physical therapy to eventually fully recover. He then re-educated and re-invented himself in the hospitality industry and as a Cicerone (similar to a Wine Sommelier) and Craft Beer aficionado. Very impressive guy. In fact, everyone that works at Barrel Republic carries at least a level one Cicerone Certification. “The great thing about this, is we eliminate the disconnect between patron and bartender. That being a double edged sword - if the customer doesn’t know how to pour or know the details of the beer they are going to sample, that would be a problem. That’s where our staff comes in and are so essential,” Kilborne goes on to say, “Bad information is the worst thing in the beer industry - Self service frees up our staff to speak to the patrons about the beer... really speak about beer profiles, personal taste, hoppy, malt-centric… whatever the customer wants. We get them there” For the patron that seeks something besides Craft Beer (whatever) there is also a selection of fine wines, with plans for an expansion of a wine bar for an even wider selection.
“IT’S KINDA LIKE A SELF SERVE SOFT YOGURT JOINT.... ONLY, WITH CRAFT BEERS INSTEAD”
The attention to detail inside Barrel Republic is impressive, with an emphasis on cleanliness. Beer lines are cleaned after each barrel. Glass stations are spotless and a glass sanitizing station is an essential part of the pouring process. Barrel Republic will never repeat kegs, meaning no dedicated handles. Kilborne explains, “There is just too much good craft beer out there to be tasted”.
Barrel Republic has the ambience and atmosphere of a hip coffee house. Relax and sample as many (or few) of the 44 Craft Beers on tap, while snacking on excellent Piorgis and other gourmet fare.
To top it all off; outside the back door, there’s a rotation of local gourmet food trucks to add to the experience & control the alcohol. (Craft beer is higher in alcohol content than most other beers) The Organic Truck serves items including Seared Ahi Salad, a Vegan Goulash, and even Lamb dishes. We sampled fare from The Pierogi Truck and filled up on ground pork Pierogis (voted “Best Pierogi in the US) and the Potato & Cheese Pierogi - filled with potatoes mixed with fresh farmers cheese & topped with caramelized onions. Awesome! This is a totally new & incredibly enjoyable experience we highly recommend.

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas? NAH! We opt out & share (most of) our escapades with you. Where to go, who to see & what to eat! 24 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
THE MISSION
D
uring our most recent visit to Sin City the crew from REVOLT IN STYLE had a number of prime objectives. First was to walk the multiple trade shows end to end. Kiss cheeks, shake hands & re-connect with our friends at some top clothing brands. Basically, see what the world of fashion is up to in 2014. Second was to review a handful of resorts & bumpin’ nightclubs on the strip. Seek out some of the famous attractions and ‘Las Vegas’ style experiences. And third, possibly the favorite... to find and sample some of the best food in Las Vegas. From casual to fine dining and everything in between. We reached out to a number of venues and PR firms & were bombarded with offers to come and sample the best of what Vegas has to offer. While we are well aware of the newer hotels such as Aria, Vdara, and Cosmopolitan that have sprouted up on the Strip, we were happy to hear from a few of the more established resorts like The Palms and LUXOR Las Vegas.
Two days later we were strolling down the Las Vegas Strip in the stifling desert heat, sucking down obscenely large, alcohol infused slurpees, plotting our next stop. God, I love LAS VEGAS! Now, Las Vegas has been good to the RIS crew over the years. Planet Hollywood provided us a lavish Honeymoon Suite after we were ‘Married by Elvis’ at the Graceland Wedding Chapel. The Act, Tao, Ghost Bar, LAX, and HAKKASAN have allowed us to skirt the long lines and post up in their VIP sections. Dana White & company over at the UFC have set us up numerable times ringside for some of the biggest MMA (mixed martial art) fights to ever take place in the Octagon. We simply love Las Vegas. We have found out thru trial & error that two days is never quite enough, and five days are just too damn many. This four day trip left us wanting nothing. We ran ourselves ragged experiencing Magic & Agenda. We stayed in absolute luxury and style. We dined with the elite and sampled the ‘Nectar of the Gods’ - and at the end of it all... blew some zombies to hell with a FULLY AUTOMATIC SUBMACHINE GUN. Let me say it again... God, we love LAS VEGAS!
THE TRADES
E
very six months, the trade show circuit kicks into gear, brands gather to display their wares & stores’ buyers line up to make their orders. This fundamental leg of the industry has become so much more than a simple trade show at this point, where clothes are displayed, hyped & sold wholesale. The degree to which people attempt to out-do their competition and one-up the booth next door is astonishing. Where else in the world can see corporate suits & ganstah rappers rubbing shoulders with laid back surfers & hipster pukes? Celebrities like Pharrell, Travis Barker milled around with uber pop artist Ron English & tattoo Hall-of-famer Tim Hendricks. People watching is unparalleled at the trade shows in Las Vegas. The granddaddy of all the shows, the ever-evolving Magic Market Place, this year transformed into a 10-show Magic Market Week, held in the Las Vegas Convention Center and Mandalay Bay Convention Center. The definative compass needle in fresh style; Agenda, went off simultaneously at the Sands Expo in the Venetian. Both shows fractured off into numerous sub tradeshows each with their own flavor & style.
MAGIC
- FN Platform, WWDMAGIC, MAGIC Men’s, Project Las Vegas, Project MVMNT, the Tents at Project, Pool Trade Show, WSA @ MAGIC, Sourcing at MAGIC and ENK Vegas, held in the Las Vegas Convention Center and Mandalay Bay Convention Center. Shoes and women’s clothing take up most of the space at the Las Vegas Convention Center, while menswear has a home at Mandalay Bay. As for the difference between the many shows, think of Project as the sometimes high-end MAGIC’s edgier cousin: There you’ll see more modern haircuts among the brands that strive to appeal to young urban dwellers. MAGIC Men’s boasts well-known brands, including the O.G. and Ben Davis, while Project MVMNT features streetwear brands such as Sullen, Split and Streetwise Clothing Co.
AGENDA - Agenda, Liberty Fairs, Project and Capsule Trade
shows - Agenda Vegas launched in Sin City at the Sands Expo at The Venetian/Palazzo Hotel. The show took the city by storm with over 9,000 retailers. Definitely leaning well towards the Hipster crowd. Beards, handlebar mustaches and ‘buzz’ cuts, held down with a shit ton of hair product, is the new norm. Everyone has a purpose to hustle and build for the futures of their companies. Every brand rocked their product with pride, attempting to network with any & all possible outlets. Some brands are on their way up, while some brands are just sittin’ pretty at the top of the heap.
“Agenda Las Vegas creates an impressive and effective business experience for both brands and retailers. A very-well curated show,” Agenda attracted music industry’s heavies and up-and-coming talent. Multi-platinum producer and singer Pharrell Williams represented his collection Ice Cream. Award-winning drummer and producer Travis Barker represented his brand, Famous Stars and Straps. The hip-hop world was in full flux, with co-founders of Cash Money Records, Bryan “Birdman” Williams and Ronald “Slim” Williams. Musical talents such as Big Sean, Bun B, Travi$ Scott, Jim Jones, and many more came to check out the show. Though it was the show’s inaugural Las Vegas appearance, Liberty was a big success and by the numbers, there were 300+ brands, 3,000+ retail buyers, and hundreds of press outlets in attendance. Action sports lifestyle brands that exhibited at Liberty such as Raen Optics, Shwood Eyewear, Hex, Deus Ex Machina, Kr3w, Zanerobe and Vanguard may be considered the top tier price point in most core surf shops. Because of the clientele at Liberty, the surf and skate brands stood on the strength of the product’s quality and cool factor. The surf/skate/biking aspect was more about recreation and lifestyle, as opposed to famous athlete names.

Plus, Luxor offers everything you’d expect from a Las Vegas hotel – from fabulous entertainment and dining, to non-stop Las Vegas casino action.
The good people at Wicked Creative arranged our stay at the Luxor Las Vegas. We were set up in one of the Tower Premiere Suites. In comparison to other suites we have experienced in Las Vegas, they are larger (at 1050 square feet) & more luxurious than most others, they feature floor-to-ceiling windows, a wet bar, separate dining area, and a breakfast nook. Each room provides amazing city views. The valet & room service was excellent, the food was delivered fast, hot and fresh. Unpretentious, helpful staff everywhere made us feel extremely welcome. Quite the opposite of many Vegas resorts. Hats off. 3900 S Las Vegas Blvd Las Vegas, NV 89119

PLAY HARDER Bottle service is one of those things that even if you don’t normally partake, it can actually make sense here. Bottle service in Las Vegas, like most places, basically gives you VIP treatment with a place to sit, waived cover and quick entry, security, your own waitress, and of course bottles of liquor. If you have a group, it will undoubtably pay for itself. Cocktails run around 12-15 bucks at most strip nightclubs. Give www.bottle-service-vegas.com a call & allow them to hook it up.

Rise AGAINST Interview by Leslie Terhorst Photography by Andre Badenhorst
G
oogle the name Rise Against and you’ll see them listed in the Urban Dictionary. Definition describes; “Rise Against, One of the best punk bands ever. Awesome, heartfelt lyrics ranging from love to politics to life in general, loud pounding voices and amazing drums.” I couldn’t describe them more perfectly if I would have submitted it myself?
It’s been exactly seven years since Rise Against graced the cover of Revolt In Style. Since then there’s been a lot of changes for the band. Changes in record labels, band members, causes to fight against, became vegetarians, and released three albums. Two studio releases “Appeal to Reason” & “Endgame.” Plus the release of 26 tracks of resolve, lesser-known recordings and covers appropriately titled “Long Forgotten Songs: B-Sides & Covers. (2000-2013).” Three of the songs on this latest album were released as singles. “Death Blossoms” for DLC on Guitar Hero: World Tour on 3/12/09, “Grammatizator” on 10/20/09, and “Sight Unseen” released on the Internet at about the same time. As of December 2010, the three songs had not been released anywhere else, until now. Listening to this album you can hear their changes in styles, and the journey the band has taken through the years. Now after headlining the Vans Warped Tour – Europe in November, the band is finally sitting down together to start writing their 7th studio album. I was fortunate enough to connect with front man Tim McIlrath, and as a fan, I was a excited to hear what he’s been up to. Revolt In Style: It’s taken RA just about 13 years to formulate your latest compilation album ‘Long Forgotten Songs: B-Sides & Covers (2000–2013).’ When putting the 26 songs together, are there any particular ones that made you say “holy shit I totally forgot about this one?” TIM: Absolutely. Forgetting about some of these songs actually played a big role in the idea behind this whole record. We figured if we were forgetting them, than it’s certain that our fans are too. Some of these songs we put together so quick, and they got shelved so fast, we never spent a lot of time listening to them as intently as you might listen to other songs that you make for or spend a lot of time mixing and mastering. So to bring them out was kind of like excavating a dig. Songs like ‘Sight Unseen’ or ‘Historia Calamitatum’ were fun to listen to with fresh ears. RIS: In the span of your career, Rise Against has been through a lot of changes. Record labels, band mates, political outrage, and even music styles. What advice would you give to an up and coming band, knowing now what you didn’t know then? TIM: Just follow your gut, create something that satisfies yourself, keep the people that were there first close, and always look at the big picture. Make the world come to you by creating something compelling, and understand that not everyone is going to get it.
32 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
RIS: What are some of your most favorite band moments? TIM: Sitting in the basement of the Discord house with Ian Mackaye as he tells you about the Minor Threat and Fugazi practices and what the house means to him. Playing on stage in LA last year with Tom Morello and Wayne Kramer of the MC5. Making records with Bill Stevenson in Colorado. Playing songs with Jackson Browne at a union Rally in Wisconsin. Singing Minor Threat covers with Dennis from Refused and Brian Baker in Sweden. Most of favorite moments happen when my hero’s have given me a nod of approval through collaborations like the ones above. They are full circle moments. RIS: I understand you are working on a new studio album for a release next year. That still in the works? What can we expect? TIM: We are starting to churn out some ideas, we will take our time, and it will be done when it’s done. RIS: Where do you guys hang your hats these days? TIM: We are spread out through Chicago, Texas and Colorado. RIS: Is there somewhere you haven’t played that you would like to? TIM: There are so many places, but the Pacific Rim would be an adventure I look forward to taking.
RIS: What’s the worst question you’ve ever been asked in an interview? (You cannot say this one) TIM: What are you rising against? RIS: On a personal level, how has being a musician hindered or helped in your life? TIM: It’s really only helped me. If I wasn’t able to get these songs out I think I’d be an unhappy person. It’s therapy, it’s travel and adventure, its meeting really interesting people and creating things you never thought you could. The schedule can be daunting, but we pace ourselves. RIS: How do you give back? I mean, you’ve been so fortunate in your career is there any causes you feel so passionately about, that you are compelled to “give back?” TIM: We’ve always been drawn to animal rights and environmental movements so we collaborate with organizations from that world often.

EDITORS CHOICE - RISE AGAINST - Long Forgotten Songs: Genre: Alt/Punk
Rise Against, have finally released their first B-side album and the excitement couldn’t be higher. “Long Forgotten Songs: B-Sides and Covers 2000-2013” features 26 tracks of resolve, lesser-known recordings and covers, meaning that it’s a must for any serious Rise Against enthusiast and a long-awaited item to add to any collection. The release spans the entirety of the bands’ life and boasts the songs, such as “Death Blossoms,” “Voice of Dissent,” and the acoustic “Everchanging.” Some tracks, like “But Tonight We Dance” are considered classics by a few, but virtually unknown to others, due to varying editions of the six studio releases. Whereas “Ballad of Hollis Brown” will be an unheard of track to many, previously appearing only on the Bob Dylan compilation/tribute album “Chimes of Freedom.” One of my favorites is their rendition of the ‘Weeds’ theme song “Little Boxes.” What Long Forgotten Songs achieves is seasoned tracks, with a new look and the same forte. This is what every fan has been waiting to hear. Frontman Tim McIlrath reveals: “Songs like ‘Sight Unseen’ or ‘Historia Calamitatum’ were fun to listen to with fresh ears.” Available now.
SAFETY ORANGE - State of Where I am Genre: Punk/Reggae/Rock
Safety Orange has become a sound staple here is SoCal. The latest Safety Orange release “State of Where I am” is chock-full of that perfect SoCal positive vibe. It starts right off the bat with “Radio” Greg’s mesmerizing guitar chords completely sets the tone for what is to come next. The albums title song “State of Where I am” defines that “there’s no place like home” feeling, and lets you know exactly where the bands state of mind was when they wrote this song. There are a couple standouts for me. “Just Like Heaven” taking a classic Cure song, and turning it into what I’m sure they never intended, a beachy reggae-esque chill song. Love it guys…. Then of coarse there’s the mashing of old with new school in “Hotel What Ever You Like” how can you go wrong with the Eagles and Patron on ice. Sol Turpin lead vox/bass, Greg Karlo guitar/vox, and Jessie “Tato” Tate on drums created an album with that perfect “Beach Rock” vibe, that enable you to escape, if only for awhile. I really enjoyed this album, but guys, please don’t wait another 9 years for the next one. Check out www.safetyorange.com for their show schedule, they are amazing live. Available now.
Anchorman 2 - The Legend Continues Genre: Soundtrack
The soundtrack to the 2013 comedy film Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues features more classic rock songs perfectly “leisure”suited to the film’s vintage setting. In keeping with the ‘70s vibe of the first Anchorman soundtrack, here we get a bevy of yacht rock-era hits including Captain & Tennille’s “Muskrat Love,” Jay Ferguson’s “Thunder Island,” and England Dan & John Ford Coley’s “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight.” However, as Anchorman 2 takes place around 1980, we also get a few early-’80s tracks like Christopher Cross’ “Ride Like the Wind” -- included here in both its original format and reworked by Robin Thicke and Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) -- John Waite’s “Change,” and Grandmaster Melle Mel’s 1983 hip-hop classic “White Lines (Don’t Do It).” As with the first Anchorman soundtrack, Anchorman 2 features humorous between-track segments from Ferrell as his alter ego, stentorian news legend Ron Burgundy, as well as a few choice bits from the film. This adds a layer of meta-style, in-character comedy to the listening experience as Burgundy introduces the soundtrack and proceeds to guide you through the album. Whether you are a fan of ‘70s and ‘80s pop or bawdy satire, or simply want something to cue up on the hi-fi as you relax in your Naugahyde recliner while sipping a glass

THE HOBBIT The Desolation of Smaug (Warner Brothers)
Peter Jackson’s first Hobbit film left most people underwhelmed. Turning J.R.R. Tolkein’s short (by comparison to his Lord of the Rings) novel into a trilogy seemed an unnecessary stretching of the adventure. But trailers for Part 2 promise a film with amped up action. The film is pushing technology with its 48P projection and 3D, but Jackson doesn’t seem as experimental and innovative in his storytelling. Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the dragon Smaug is a definite attraction, and Martin Freeman is a perfect choice for Bilbo.
Inside Llewyn Davis
(CBS) The Coens never fail to deliver a meticulously crafted movie and Inside Llewyn Davis is no exception. The problem with their films is that they sometimes feel a bit aloof and the lack of overt emotion can make the meaning or purpose of their films hard to determine. The filmmakers themselves are often no help and in interviews you can never be sure if you can believe what they say. At a press conference for Inside Llewyn Davis, they dryly said, “The film doesn’t really have a story or a plot, which is why we added the cat.” Hmm? Not very helpful. This film seems a close cousin to their A Serious Man, and both feel dark and somber. I have seen critic quotes on the poster describing the film as being about ‘the joy and magic of making music and the bustling exuberance of creativity” and about their “emotional investment” in their title character. But nothing seems farther from the truth. Now don’t get me wrong. I think the film is brilliantly made but I’m just trying to figure out why they made it. It seems to reflect bitterness on Davis’ part for not being able to make it in the music industry but it also seems like the filmmakers don’t think he deserves success. We get a glimpse of Dylan at the end and the suggestion is that he is the real folk singer as artist; Davis is more of a pretentious and whining wannabe. So in the end, the film feels like a bleak portrait of a failed folk singer. But as with all Coen films, I need to see it again to be sure. Pair this with Barton Fink and A Serious Man.

Saving Mr. Banks
(Disney) The behind-the-scenes story of how Walt Disney courted author P.L. Travers to hand over her beloved Mary Poppins is documented in this film. Emma Thompson is Travers, a woman who was most reluctant to hand over her creation to the Mouse. While Travers is bad mouthing Disney and his penchant for making everything all saccharine sweet, the film is actually enjoyable. She reflects how a lot of people feel about Disney and the monolithic corporation he built. But as soon as Tom Hank’s Disney starts to win her over, the film turns painful and awful. Sure Disney got Julie Andrews to make a lovely Mary Poppins but I’m sure Travers was appalled by Dick Van Dyke’s atrocious British accent in the film. At the end of the movie, we get to hear a snippet of the real Travers on tape. I might have preferred two hours of that to this film. But good supporting work by Paul Giamatti, Bradley Whitford, and Jason Schwartzman. The behind the scenes details are also fascinating but the forced flashbacks to Travers youth fall flat.
AMERICAN HUSTLE
(Columbia) Director David O. Russell reteams with his Silver Linings Playbook stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence for this story inspired by the FBI’s ABSCAM sting operation that began in the late 70s. You could call American Hustle a poor man’s Argo (last year’s dramatization of the CIA led rescue of six U.S. diplomats during the Iran hostage crisis in 1979). Where Argo was slick and tightly crafted, American Hustle is messy and chaotic. Each film reflects the tone, style, and success of the operation it depicts. So American Hustle makes for an entertaining ride but its form is sloppy and its final results less than triumphant. It does have wildly over the top performances by Christian Bale as a con man and Jennifer Lawrence as his unbalanced wife. The other casting, like Cooper and Jeremy Renner playing Italian Americans, is less convincing. The film has energy but no real point. Russell displayed some sharp wit in his earlier Three Kings but he seems to have lost his edge. This does get the award for worst hair of the year.
ANCHORMAN 2
(Paramount Pictures) Ron Burgundy and his entire crew return almost a decade after Will Ferrell made the arrogant, smug San Diego news anchor famous. He also immortalized America’s finest city as “a whale’s vagina.” The film held a casting call in San Diego earlier this year that generated excitement here in town. The film doesn’t look to break any new ground but it is likely to satisfy fans of the first with more of the same goofy, low humor.
