JOE FOSTER DEREK PLANK Derek Plank began working as a professional photographer on the mountain in Steamboat Springs Colorado and started shooting bands and models instead of tourists when he moved to San Diego. No Cover Magazine is where he got his start, but he was soon shooting for other local publications such as Where@, Revolt In Style, The Reader, Modern Fix, San Diego Downtown Magazine, Slamm and City Beat, Uptown Magazine, Get 1 Free, SD Music Matters, and Krown Magazine. Revolt In Style played a major role in his development as a photographer and he’s glad to be back on the team. You can view his website at www.derekplank.com.
“I have been shooting for over 20 years. I started as a fashion photographer but have always surfed and had a strong connection to the ocean. I am stoked to become the new surfing photo editor for Revolt In Style and hope to establish a strong team of photographers and creatives to create a much needed California Surf Journal centered around all the talent we have to offer. It’s not all about Kelly Slater as it is what we are doing and breeding here in our own backyards. Looking forward to a great year and I hope everyone enjoys the new the direction. - Foster

EDITOR’S NOTE
I
t’s funny, gowing up, my father used to tell me, “Quit wasting time kid, when you get older, time will pass you by like the blink of an eye.” I really didn’t give it much thought at the time. Back then, all I had was time. Time to waste... time to burn... time to kill. Maybe I should have listened to my pops more... turns out he was so right.
I bring this up because, just a minute ago, we wrapped our seventh season of the Revolt Summer Surf Series. At least, it seems like it was just a minute ago... It was actually six months ago. Now we’re staring down the barrel of another RSSS season! My pops was right! I’m getting older & time is moving faster! On June 21 we will kick off Season Eight of the RSSS Pro Am at the OB Pier. Sponsors are lining up earlier than ever before. We’re excited to announce that our 2014 RSSS presenting sponsor is Hoven Sunglasses. Red Bull also returns this season, along with Kicker Audio & Sky Dive San Diego. Newcomers Dos XX Beer and ‘The Most Interesting Man in the World’, have signed on and are helping to take our events & after parties to the next level this summer. Keeping in line with the RSSS ‘Green Beach’ theme we have again invited the Surfrider Foundation and SD Coastkeepers to join us, they both gladly accepted. We want to make sure our oceans and beaches are protected at all costs - both organizations along with a number of other eco friendly companies and brands will be at each event to help raise environmental awareness and keep our beaches clean & pristine. We are proud to announce that this summer the RSSS FINALS will once again be the signature sporting event at the Pacific Beach Fest in October. We expect to attract well over 100,000 people to our combined events in 2014. Just wait till you see what we have up our sleeves this year. Yew! This event is important to us for a few reasons: First off, it’s important to us that we supply San Diego surfers with an honest, professionally run, independent surf series. It’s not about the money, not about the ratings & it’s definitely not about us. It’s about the sport & it’s about the surfers. We want everyone to have a blast. A stress free day with friends & family, enjoying the beach and the surf. Afterwards, it’s a celebration with our friends, tossing back a few coldies at some cool beach bar. That’s why we’re here in SD in the first place! So, enjoy this issue. It’s been a while, but we’re glad to see you all again. Help us welcome Joe Foster on board as our new Surf Editor. He brings a ton of experience and talent to the publication. Joe is a creative guy with an amazing eye for surfing action. Flip over this issue for a look at the newly overhauled surf section. We think it’s pretty sick, I hope you all agree. See you in the lineup. Peace ~ B & L
I DON’T ALWAYS SURF IN COMPETITIONS... BUT WHEN I DO, IT’S THE REVOLT SUMMER SURF SERIES!

STRAIGHT UP Words by Brian Terhorst Images by Leslie Terhorst
BRIAN BENT
I’ve just got to say… Brian Bent is one cool cat. He excels in the most cool and creative things. He makes his own clothing, his own music and his own, jaw dropping, what the hell is that?... rapid transportation. He definitely has a style all his own… He’s an Artist. A Musician. An entrepreneur & a true Hodad Hot Rodder. He has been a creative force behind startup companies like Captain Fin, Powerbalance and most recently United 50 clothing. Very creative, very talented, very unique. Dammit, I’ll just go ahead & call it... He’s a Renaissance Man. We first met Brian in 2009 when our mutual friend Troy Rodarmel enlisted BB’s help to make up the trophies for the Revolt Summer Surf Series. He told us Brian would put something together, no direction necessary. Trust him. At first I was skeptical. First, that he would get them done in three days, second, that they are handmade trophies. We had planned on giving our athletes the oldfashioned, plastic & ‘fake’ gold plated trophies like every other surf contest. You know... the ones with the little surfer posing on top? Anyway, Troy showed up the day of our first contest with these… unreal, totally unique, custom welded trophies/sculptures that Brian had knocked out for 24 of our surfers. Twenty Four of them! I’m sure every one of those kids still have their trophy and will probably hold on to it ‘till the day they die. Very cool. To this day, the custom, handmade trophies are still one of the signature elements of the RSSS events.
20 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
So, back to Brian: His style is absolutely unique. From the clothes he wears, to the car he drives, to the boards he surfs. 100% Brian Bent. Chances are, whatever he’s wearing, he’s riding in (or on)… he has made himself. His artwork is unlike any other. When I come across a Brian Bent painting, sculpture or screen print -I know it’s his work immediately. His style is all his own. His work has been seen on display at galleries, corporate lobbies, and store fronts from Southern California to Japan and even France. His most current musical endeavor is ‘Ragged ’Ol Sailor’ - a surf rock, rock-a-billy mixture that fits his style to a T. “My daughter is playing in the band. We still have the Pioneers but I’m more active with Ragged ‘Ol Sailor. We’ve played at Lightning Bolt, Surf Indian. We just played in Laguna at the AR4T Gallery (Artists Republic 4 Tomorrow) With Nick Simich & Duffy. Both are pretty good musicians as well.” He’s opened a small shop to showcase his own artwork and styles for United 50 clothing company, that he and Troy Rodarmel began a couple of years back. Hot Rod Garage Sale is an intimate space in North Park. “With older era lifestyle items sometimes thrown together pretty quick, so not to lose the raw and simple spontaneous feel, mostly being built or sewn, painted, fabricated, printed or picked.”
He’s an artist. A musician, an entrepreneur. An absolutely unique, Hodad Hotrodder. You will find wall to wall hand made clothing, original artwork and silkscreens inspired by a 30’s-50’s retro vintage with a punk edge. Keep your eyes open, there is a plethora of smalls placed throughout the displays. Very cool stuff. “It’s a style that followed after the guys that owned Hotrods & surfboards back in the day.” Leather Jackets with hand painted messaging and wool sweaters with hand sewn appliqués that actually function as wetsuit (of sorts). “Yeah, I surf in one. Wool doesn’t chill. It holds the heat in. I don’t recommend them for everyone - riding the kook box, I’m up out of the water. Longboarders can pull it. But Shortboarders… not so much. It’s kinda like this: You put it on in the morning, go down to the beach in your roadster. Take off your T-shirt underneath & then you surf in it. You leave it on afterward while you drive back & the wind blows it dry - by the time you get to work it’s dry & you can even wear it the rest of the day. Even go out to dinner in it, like a jacket. They call it repurposing - My grandfather did that most of his life. We used to collect scrap iron, we’d go to scrap yards & pick it up by the ton in my granpa’s old chevy. I grew up around that.” His work bench is repurposed angle iron, his shelves rescued bits of shelving and cabinetry from who knows where. A very resourceful dude. “Like that piece over there” (He gestures to the corner) “That came off a 27 Oakland”. I take a moment to appreciate the nearly one hundred year old steel fender that he refers to. Rusty gold. Topped with a bit of personalized artwork - this piece is adorned with his ever present animated character ‘Stew Pot’ riding a classic ‘Kook box’ surf board (curiously he’s holding up an armful of pistons) and the words ‘’Hot Rod Surfer’ and ‘Slide The Curl’ - The theme resonates through out his studio. Stew Pot: “He’s my ‘San Onofre Flake’. He’s that 40’s character. He’s that Navy guy in the south pacific. Sailor hat, half sleeves, stirring the pot of laundry. I just dig those raw characters. It’s funny… being surrounded by all this crazy stuff - So, I kinda just blended this guy from being a sailor, surfer, hotrodder. Ya’ get the big eyes... they signify that 1930’s ‘Moon over June’ style like Oswald The Lucky Rabbit, Betty Boop or some of the old Popeye characters - That’s the era I like. Old Mickey Mouse too.” “Kinda like Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth & Rat Fink. Roth derived his legendary Rat Fink character from just taking Micky Mouse & making him all gnarly. Brian grabs a folded paper napkin and a fat bic pen, pops a squat on the floor and proceeds to sketch a version of Rat Fink or Mickey Rat on the napkin. “See, without looking at a copy of Mickey you just go by memory and come up with this weird version. He sketches wildly… 1 Min. Flat. He rocks back on his heels, cocks his head at the drawing, “See? Add some stripes here… some flies buzzing around…” Yes. I see. And I get where he is going. “It’s almost like the cars I build. They’ve been coined ‘Ratrods’. They’re built to look like the old racers or Dry Lake style. I use materials that may not even necessarily belong on a car, it may not be a car ‘part’… sometimes It just needs to ‘work’. It may be aerodynamic or simply fit what needs to be done. Steel can be cut to make bumpers or crash bars…. whatever. It’s getting the pieces to find where they go. The 31 Ford out front - we built as a mascot for the Hot Rod Church. It was my first Hot Rod. My oldest. It’s got the Boat Tail style. 41 or 42 hood on the back. I actually got in an accident on the freeway coming back from surfing with Dan’O at San Onofre. Missed a shift, spun out, wound up backwards on the freeway & wham! A Semi clipped the back & just folded the whole roadster pickup back. That’s how it got the boat tail… plus I just like the boat tail. It’s what I drive down to San Diego everyday.” That’s what I appreciate about Brian. He just makes it happen. Need a cool car? Build it. Need a unique shirt? Sew one together. Have a message? Get it out there man! Gotta love the hustle. He has it down-pat. Glad to call him a friend. nder the pseudonym PIERCE WILLIAMS, his new series of stencil serigraph prints will debut at Artlab, 3536 Adams Avenue, San Diego, with a free opening reception on Saturday, March 1, 2014 from 7 - 11pm. His solo art show, called REINVENTION, will continue to be on display TuesdaySaturday, March 4 - 31, 1 - 6pm daily.
Pierce’s work spans a variety of media, including sculpture, stencil prints, silkscreen prints and clothing, rock posters, and web/graphic design. He has curated over 40 art exhibitions, and his art has been shown on national television and throughout the United States, as well as internationally in Japan, Spain, Iceland, Italy, Belgium and the UK.
The artist calls his new project the PIERCE WILLIAMS STENCIL ART REVOLUTION, and the work features his new technique of creating fine art prints by hand, with a plastic stencil, silkscreen ink, and roller brush. Each print is 4 color, 18”x24”, ink on 24lb. cover stock. 400 of each design are made as signed /numbered limited editions. Of the 400, 100 of each color are made in brown, yellow, red and blue.

The artist has primarily done portraits of musicians so far for this series, including Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Dave Gahan, Elvis Costello, Fiona Apple, Ice Cube, Johnny Cash, Jonathan Richman, Lou Reed and Trent Reznor. Planned portraits include more musicians, visual artists, actors, and other famous people.
His metal sculptures made a splash in the local scene when shown with the artist collective members of RADIOACTIVE FUTURE. “Allosaurus”, a dinosaur sculpture is 11 feet long and 5 feet high. “The Robot Warrior of the Radioactive Future” is 10 feet high and 2 feet wide. Art critic Robert L. Pincus said about Pierce’s group in an article, “Radioactive Future - the phrase is forward-looking, in a bleak sort of way. It also has a retro ring to it, conjuring up Cold War images of grade-school youngsters ducking under their desks in practice drills for a Soviet attack.”
Melding his love of music and art while promoting the San Diego music scene, he has designed hundreds of rock posters for various bands and local venues including Brick by Brick, the Jumping Turtle, The Casbah, and The Ruby Room. Musicians and groups he has worked with include FEAR, Kurtis Blow, The Supersuckers, Voodoo Glow Skulls, U.K. Subs, Adolescents, Battalion of Saints, Sprung Monkey, Pato Banton, Agnostic Front and many more. P.O.D. PAYABLE ON DEATH “When we started over 20 years ago we just played San Diego... There were never any goals or dreams of signing to a major label, traveling the world or being a rock star. No one ever thought that way,”“ 28 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
Interview by Leslie Terhorst Photos by Derek Plank
W
e met up with P.O.D. at the Rock and Roll San Diego studio - they were rehearsing for up coming shows in Houston & Phoenix, a performance at a NASCAR event, and then they were flying off to South America. Upon their return they will perform a free concert here in San Diego on March 22nd at the Grand Opening of the new San Diego Harley Davidson on Morena Blvd. It seems every time we get together with P.O.D. it turns into a reminiscing session. Considering my husband (Brian) has known them for nearly 20 years. Brian has spent a lot of time with the family over the years. Dinners, BBQ’s, Holidays.. once they even got him to dress up in an authentic Batman costume for Wuv’s son’s b-day. (He scared the crap out of the kids) It’s memories like this that still fuel the conversations. Another topic that always pops up is when P.O.D. played at Brian’s nightclub that he owned out on El Cajon Blvd. back in the 90’s (The MadHouse). Marcos actually had to be escorted in and back out after the performance, because he wasn’t 21. Even back then, everyone could tell that they were going places. “When we started over 20 years ago we just played San Diego. Then somebody wanted us to play L.A. and other places, and we took it step by step. There were never any goals or dreams of signing to a major label or traveling the world or being a rock star. No one ever thought that way,” said Sonny Sandoval.
Over the last two decades, the group has sold over 10 million albums. On September 11, 2001 P.O.D. released their fourth studio album, Satellite. The album’s first single, “Alive”, went on to become one of MTV’s and MTV2’s top played videos of the year. The video’s popularity, as well as the song’s positive message, helped the song become a huge modern rock radio hit and it was Grammy nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2002. The album’s second single, “Youth of the Nation”, was influenced in part by the school shootings at Santana High School, Columbine High School, and Granite Hills High School. It was Grammy nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2003. Their 8th studio album Murdered Love’s lead single, “Lost in Forever (Scream)”, charted at No. 12 on the mainstream rock charts, No. 1 on Active Rock, and No. 1 on Christian Rock. Music trends have come and gone, but P.O.D.’s fan base has seemingly only grown stronger. Wuv Bernardo − drums, percussion, rhythm guitar, backing vocals, Marcos Curiel − lead guitar, programming, backing vocals, Traa Daniels − bass guitar, backing vocals, and Sonny Sandoval − lead vocals, make up this amazing talented bunch of San Diego natives. A few years ago P.O.D. teamed up with San Diego Harley Davidson (SDHD). Brought together by HD Executive Dino Bernacchi, a huge fan of the band, he felt that they ‘were a perfect fit’. Since then, P.O.D. has been putting on free concerts at SDHD, in return each member of the band received a new Harley Davidson motorcycle, that they would eventually have HD customize personally for them.
“While we were waiting for our bikes to arrive from the factory, SDHD gave us full access to all the bikes,” states Wuv, “we could take which ever bike we wanted, everyday, if that’s what we chose. We tested all the different models, so when our bikes arrived we could have them tailored specifically for each of us.” This was definitely a well though-out process. These custom Harley’s are insane. SDHD has even built P.O.D. a rehearsal studio inside the new location. “They were cool enough to give us a spot to rehearse, so if we’re there, people can come by and check us out.” P.O.D. and Harley seem to be a match made in heaven. If you don’t get a chance to see them at the SDHD show, you can always catch one of their side-projects. Wuv has been performing with Southtown Generals, which is an American Reggae Rock Band. Members include – lead vocals by Tim Pacheco, drums Wuv Bernardo, bassist Dante Thomas from the band Agua Dulce, guitarist Anders Pellmark and keyboardist Jimmy Kiy. Wuv also joined forces with Reginald Quincy “Fieldy” Arvizu of the band Korn to create the band Stillwell. Sonny created The Whosoevers with Brian “Head” Welch (formerly of Korn) and Lacey Sturm of Flyleaf. “Bad Guys Doing Good,” according to Sonny. If you get a chance, check out these bands as well. I can’t give enough praise to these guys, for their stand on faith, family, and music. These guys are the real deal. Thanks so much, and keep rockin’...

Mower: Brian Sheerin & Dominic Moscatello on Vocals, Chris McCredie on Bass, Matt Dishman on Drums and Matt Wannamaker on Guitar Together they put on one hell of a show.
MOWER Interview by Leslie Terhorst
I met the boys from Mower back in 2007 when I interviewed frontman Brian Sheerin. Then I caught the show at 710 Beach Club. What a great performance. Insanely high energy, and the vocals between Brian and Dominic were absolutely incredible. Mower has been deemed “One of the hardest working bands in San Diego.” After seeing them perform, it became very apparent just how hard they do work. That’s why it makes me sad that this could be the last show as Mower for quite sometime.
B
ut fear not, there is a softer side to Mower, the yin to their yang, the light to their dark, the angle to their devil... enough of that shit, let me introduce you to Slower. Slower which “started out as a joke” according to Chris McCredie, has now turned into the real deal band. With tour dates scheduled and a trip back from a show in South America, this seems to be only the beginning for them. Chris and I had a chance to catch up on what’s happening with both bands. RIS: So what has Mower been up to lately? CM: Mower recently got together last August for the first time in 4 years. We decided to put a show together for our friends and fans because many people had requested us to have one. We felt we owed it to everyone so we set it up at House of Blues and had a hell of a party! You might be able to catch Mower about once a year if the timing is right for a rager. RIS: You have another show coming up here on March 22nd with POD at the new Harley Davidson location. How did you get hooked up with that gig? CM: POD contacted us about opening for them and we have always had a great relationship with San Diego Harley Davidson so we were stoked to get involved
30 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
with the event. Harley Davidson just opened a new location on Morena Blvd. near PB, and it’s a perfect place for a big show. The event starts at noon and goes until 5pm, Mower will hit the stage around 2pm. RIS: I hear there are some changes coming about with the band. Is it true that Brian Sheerin is leaving, and helping his buddy open a restaurant in Cape Cod? CM: Yes it’s true. He found a great opportunity with an old friend. I’m sure he will come back with many stories. RIS: Who will take his place? CM: No one could replace Brian. Without Brian there is no Mower. He has another band called Audio Addiction with our friends Keith Mcbean and Jonny Crittenton. It’s definitely worth checking out. RIS: What’s next for you & Mower? CM: Other than the show at Harley Davidson on March 1st not a whole lot. We might do a show every once in a while, but you never know... Aren’t we mysterious.?
Slower: Dominic Moscatello on Vocals, Leif Riley on Guitar, Chris McCredie on Bass, Matt Dishman on Drums, Isak Allen on Percussion, and Daniel Markowitz on Keyboard - Together they put on one hell of a show.
SLOWER RIS: Now you just got back from South America. Who played? Mower/Slower, where did you play, and what was the craziest thing about being there? CM: Slower, our alter ego band went to Ecuador in early Feb. 2014 for the Reef Classic. The craziest thing was that we played in front of 50,000 people. We were told the attendance for the show would be 2 to 3 thousand people and we found an overwhelming energetic crowd. We were escorted by a team of security to and from the event and got to meet many government officials. The security was stressed and would not let anyone get near us. It was really funny.
RIS: Now, let’s talk about Mower’s alter ego Slower. How did Slower come about, what was the thought process in bringing it to life? CM: Slower started off as a joke. We took a Mower song (Long Awaited Riot) and turned it into a jazz/lounge kind of vibe. We composed a few more songs with the same concept, added an upright bass, some suits and ties and Voila! Slower was created. Shortly after, Alice Stinnet from Bollotta Entertainment approached us and said if we were able to combine a few hours of cover songs with the Slower originals, she could get us hired to play for a whole other sector of the entertainment industry such as playing for large corporations, private parties and charity events. Slower went right to work learning high energy cover songs ranging from the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s to current top radio hits. We had no idea the monster we were creating. Now Slower is being sent to play in amazing places and I can honestly say it’s really fun.
RIS: Where are some local places we can see Slower? CM: Most of our shows are private parties and corporate events. Here’s a list of shows in March that the public can attend: March 7th & 8th - Pala Casino. March 9th - Beachcomber, Mission Bch. March 14th - Coyote Bar and Grill. March 15th - Beaumonts, La Jolla. March 22 & 23rd - Beachcomber. RIS: Finally, any shout outs to any Family, friends or sponsors? CM: Of course big ups to all of our families, friends and fans! Avasin surfboards, a company on the rise-look out! Reef and Rail II Rail Surf Shop. Thank you all for your continued support.
SLOWER performing at the Reef Classic in South America
RIS: What do you see for Slower in the future? CM: I don’t think we have scratched the surface yet. By next year I see a lot of international touring. Slower has become one of the best party bands around and we will continue working hard to bring the highest quality of musicianship and entertainment to every show. We don’t dance, we boogie!

SOUND ADVICE

HEAR THIS
By Leslie Terhorst
EDITORS CHOICE - KINGS OF LEON - Mechanical Bull
Genre: Rock/Alt Kings of Leon hit it big in 2008 with their album ‘Only by the Night’ and the accompanying one-two punch of singles “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody.” The success of those singles propelled them into the upper echelon of arena rock bands and found them at a crossroads between the post-punk-influenced sound of their previous albums and the anthemic, U2influenced approach that they’d begun to explore on ‘Only by the Night.’ Perhaps not surprisingly, the band’s follow-up, 2010’s ‘Come Around Sundown,’ while by no means a disappointment, seemed strained, as if the band was trying too hard to balance its early sound with its later hits, all while digging even deeper into its Southern roots. Which is partly why the band’s sixth studio album, ‘Mechanical Bull,’ comes as sweet relief. While still retaining Kings of Leon’s towards hooky choruses and driving guitars, Mechanical Bull feels breezier and less labored than ‘Come Around Sundown.’ Mechanical Bull is almost like listening to an audio book. Every song seems to tell a tale. The brilliant ‘Comeback Story’ paints a picture around an empathic realization: “I walk a mile in your shoes / And now I’m a mile away / And I’ve got your shoes,” and the Cure-like ‘Temple’ and the shimmering ‘Wait For Me’ suggest absolution through hurt. Not quite sure what to make of ‘Rock City’ “I can take it like a woman/ I can shake it like a woman” hummmm, some secret longing we don’t know about? I’m glad to see the boys are on the road again. MØ -No Mythologies To Follow
Genre: Electronic Soul/Street-vibe Indie Pop Out of the recent eruption of indie-pop female powerhouses like Lorde, Grimes and Purity Ring emerges Danish-born Karen Marie Ørsted, otherwise known as MØ. In the last year or so, MØ has released one full EP, Bikini Daze, but has otherwise been slowly dropping dynamite singles as well as collaborations with electro icons, including Diplo and Avicii. MØ is a self-proclaimed player in the pop world, even citing the Spice Girls as an early inspiration. I won’t hold that against her. According to the pop princess herself, this, her first full-length album, is about “being young, confused and restless…just trying to find your own path through the jungle of the modern world.” And the album materializes as just that, exploring the speedy, aggressive ups as well as the woeful, tormented downs of becoming an adult. SKRILLEX - Recess Genre: Dubstep/Electro
Skrillex and Beyoncé have something in common? Yep, they both like a surprise release. Starting on the evening of March 10, the dubstep prince unlocked access to one song after another until all 11 tracks of his forthcoming debut album ‘Recess’ had been unleashed unto the world. While ‘Recess’ was first available to fans who had downloaded a mysterious Skrillex free “Alien Ride” app in both iPhone and Android formats, that seemed at a glance to be a video game. Fans who downloaded the app discovered on Monday evening that it included the album – all 11 tracks – embedded within it: starting at 6:30 p.m., the app began unlocking songs, with a new one added every 30 minutes, clips of the album are now streaming via iTunes before it goes on sale March 18. ‘Recess’ features guest artists that range from the usual suspects - Diplo, Alvin Risk, Kill The Noise, to the unexpected - Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos, Niki & The Dove, to the downright surprising - K-Pop stars G-Dragon and CL. BEARTOOTH Interview by Leslie Terhorst
eartooth was created out of a need for something new. Some of the best bands are often birthed by the most modest of intentions. No master plan, no blueprint for success, no marketing strategies – these are the types of groups whose organic formation ensures an authenticity to their creative output that can’t be manufactured. Caleb Shomo has gone through more as a songwriter, performer and producer in just a few short years than some music industry veterans will witness in a lifetime. Revolt In Style: Attack Attack! is dead, Beartooth is born, why the change? Caleb Shomo: I just needed some change in my life. I needed to quit AA!, I really didn’t plan on taking Beartooth seriously until we got signed. Honestly, I just needed to get my priorities in order. RIS: You’re an extremely talented artist. A musician, songwriter, producer - and you started at the age of 14. What and who influenced you to get into this business? CS: I don’t know. I joined AA! When I was 14, and then we ended up getting signed, then did the album with Joey Sturgis. I originally never planned to get into producing. I just wanted some cheap software that I could use to create some demos and do some writing. So I asked Joey, since he was to only producer I knew, if there was some super simple program I could use. Then from there I guess the rest is pretty much history. RIS: So are you pretty much self-taught? CS: I’ve pretty much taught myself everything I know about mixing and producing. RIS: You just turned 21 in December, but you seem to have the experience of someone much older. What have you learned in the last 6 years?
CS: I’ve learned that leaving home at 15, and not having a parental figure, I’ve had to figure out how to handle myself on the road. Taking life a day at a time, and realizing that anything could happen at any time. I think it has taught me how to relax when a problem comes up, and how to keep a cool head. I learned to take some time so I can sort the problem out the best way possible. RIS: Speaking of your parents, how were they about all of this? CS: They were super supportive. I’m sure they were very nervous about letting me go, but they let me pursue my dream of recording and going on tour. They have been nothing but supportive. My parents are seriously some of the coolest people on the planet. RIS: Any advise for someone wanting to get into the business? CS: Yeah, play a lot of shows if you want to be in a band and tour. Play music that you love. Don’t play a style of music because you want a certain group of people to like you, and you want them to think your cool. Because if it takes off, you’re going to be stuck playing that music for the next 5 to 10 years, and playing something you hate just for the money, you are going to be miserable. Do it because you love it.
Battling mental health struggles with depression, anxiety and related overindulgence (like many of his young fans), Shomo bowed out of Attack Attack! to get himself together. Producer, songwriter and Goldfinger guitarist John Feldman partnered with this multitalented instrumentalist, producer, songwriter Caleb Shomo, to create what is now called Beartooth. I got together with Caleb to find out more about the changes, here’s what he had to say. RIS: Tell us how you got hooked up with Red Bull Records? CS: That in all honestly stemmed from John Feldman. I worked with him in Attack Attack! back in the day. We got involved together writing songs. Originally, I was going to sign with them as a songwriter and just do a publishing deal, but they heard my musical projects, and they dug it. I don’t know, they offered me a deal I couldn’t turn down. Now, here I am. RIS: Your scheduled for the entire Vans Warped Tour this year, are you excited about that? CS: Incredibly excited. This is going to be my 4th Warped Tour. Beartooth played one show last year, but I’m excited to do this full thing, it will be really fun. RIS: Describe to us your style of music, and what influenced you to go this route? CS: I guess the style of music came a little later in life for me. I started to discover hardcore & punk music probably 3-4 years ago. I just thought it was really cool. One of my first forces was with a band called ‘Stick To Your Guns.’ They were really awesome and good people, and I just loved their music and how high energy it was. From
then, I just dove into it a little more, and looked into the history of it. It just kind of spoke to me in a way that a lot of the music currently doesn’t. At least in the sense of a live show. It’s not about there being a barricade, and this giant persona of like “we’re the sweet band you should worship, and you are just the measly fans,” I hate that! A hardcore, punk, or any crazy ass show like that has a small or lowered stage with no barricade. People are constantly stage diving or grabbing the microphone and singing, I love that… It’s way more personal to me. I guess with Beartooth’s music, I just want to play it in that kind of environment so that everyone can be more involved, and have as good of a time as I’m having. RIS: Finally, if you could tour with anyone, who would it be and where? CS: Any tour, everywhere with Rage Against the Machine.
You can catch Beartooth this summer on the Vans Warped Tour or right here in San Diego at Soma on March 23rd. WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM 33

THE WIND RISES
(Walt Disney Studios) Legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki claims The Wind Rises will be his last film. He has been announcing retirement for years but increasing problems with his vision – which prevents him from continuing to do his own animation – look to make The Wind Rises his true final film. For his swan song, Miyazaki has turned to a surprising subject, a biography of Jiro Horikoshi, who designed fighter planes for Japan during World War II. Jiro (voiced in the American release by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) dreams of being a pilot but nearsightedness prevents that. So he turns his passion to designing beautiful planes inspired by Italy’s Caproni.
The film is subtle and complex as it explores the distance between an inventor’s dream and the reality of his invention. At the end, Jiro’s idol notes that “Airplanes are beautiful dreams, cursed dreams.” This conundrum can also extend to the artist who strives to create a thing of beauty in a world that may be an uglier reality. Miyazaki’s tone is never bitter, just achingly aware of the contradictions in life. Miyazaki’s hand drawn animation style is like a breath of fresh air amidst all the hollow CGI flooding mall theaters. Whereas Miyazaki always pushed the boundaries of art and storytelling, his American counterparts seem more interested in merely pushing the technology. Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature.
OMAR
(Adopt Films) The Academy Award nominated Best Foreign Language Film, Omar, is a tense thriller about exploring the possibility for trust amidst the complex dynamics of life in the Occupied Territories. Omar (Adam Bakri) is a Palestinian baker in love with a girl on the other side of the separation wall. His connection to an attack on the Israeli military leads to his arrest and he agrees to work as an informant for an Israeli agent named Rami (Waleed F. Zuaiter). Director Hany Abu-Assad made the Oscar-nominated Paradise Now back in 2005. Omar continues in the tradition of that film as it tackles similar themes and refuses to paint them in simple black and white terms. Abu-Assad’s films are provocative because he doesn’t tell you what to think but rather presents fully human, multi-dimensional characters that struggle with difficult decisions. As a result there are no easy answers only a series of questions and possibilities.
TIM’S VERMEER
(Sony Pictures Classics) Texas-based inventor Tim Jenison takes on a mystery of the art world: How did 17th century Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer (Girl with a Pearl Earring) manage to paint so photo-realistically? Jenison’s search spans eight years, and takes him from Vermeer’s Delft where the artist painted to Buckingham Palace to see a Vermeer painting up close. The film talks with such diverse folks as artist David Hockney, comedian Martin Mull, professor Philip Steadman, and Dr. Colin Blakemore. The film is directed by Teller, and narrated (and co-produced) by Teller’s illusionist partner Penn Jillette.

VISITORS (Cinedigm)
Three decades after Koyaanisqatsi, writer/producer/director Godfrey Reggio reteams with composer Philip Glass to once again challenge audience expectations about how to watch a movie. This time he serves up a breathtakingly gorgeous black and white vision of modern life in the age of technology overload. Reggio employs state of the art technology as a kind of ironic weapon in his critique of our current dependence on technology. Reggio explains his film as, “It removes the foreground of traditional cinema, plot and characterization, and elevates the background, place and ‘extras’ to the foreground. In so doing it brings focus to that which is invisible by virtue of its presence, that which is hidden in plain sight—the background… The subject of this film is you watching the film. In this story to behold, you are the storyteller; you are the plot and character.” Opens March 7.

CORIOLANUS
(National Theater Live) National Theater Live is a project run by the Royal National Theater in London. It brings live broadcasts and filmed stage plays to cinemas around the globe. It started in 2009 and so far what I’ve seen has been impressive. Past plays include Frankenstein directed by Danny Boyle and with actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating in the roles of Frankenstein and the monster. The latest play to hit theaters is Shakespeare’s Coriolanus with Tom Hidddleston (Loki from The Avengers and Thor) in the title role. This production brings the centuries old politics of the play into the present day with effective results. It’s not as clear in purpose as the 2011 adaptation with Ralph Fiennes. But Hiddleston brings energy and depth to the character of a general who was brilliant in battle but ill-suited to the more subtle maneuverings needed in the world of politics. Opens March 9.
