PUBLISHER’S NOTE YOU KNOW WHAT THE BEST PART OF THIS JOB IS?
I
t’s the people I get to meet. Every issue of Revolt In Style that comes out means that Leslie & myself met a new batch of talented and interesting people. The last issue found us up in Seal Beach at the Affliction Clothing headquarters covering their art exhibit / car / motorcycle show / concert - Thy Will Be Done. We bumped into quite a few interesting people, movie star Michael Madsen, MMA fighter Fabricio Werdum, hell, we even met Lorenzo Llamas. But the best part of he day was meeting one of my personal heroes, ‘The Natural‘ Randy Couture. Shaking his hand and spending a few minutes with him talking about his career was the highlight of the year so far. He’s about as nice a guy as you can imagine. His MMA fighting career is winding Mugging with Randy Couture down but his acting career is just getting started. Man I wish we could roll back time and see him fight Fedor. But, oh well, I’ve enjoyed watching every one of his fights. I guess we’ll have to be content watching his badass acting roles like in “The Expendables” which came out a while back. I hear they’re working on “The Expendables II”. Cant wait to see it. I wish him much continued success.
So, The Revolt Summer Surf Series is in full swing. Again, we continue to charm the Surf Gods, as they keep feeding us tasty waves and beautiful weather. The event continues to grow and we find ourselves looking at around 110+ surfers at each event now. That means we get them in the water at 8am for the first heat & we wrap up the finals around 6:30 pm. That is a full day of surfing action. The coolest thing about the series is watching the riders grow up. The groms turn into juniors, the juniors into pros and so on. Some of the riders have been with us since the beginning, five years ago. It’s great watching these athletes continue to mature as athletes and people. The event draws people from all over the state, country and planet. Our eco-friendly partners are helping us spread the good word and help us to raise awareness on important issues that affect us all. This season saw a new type of competitor, an NFL Superbowl Champion. Brett Swain showed up at the second event and competed in our SUP division. He had been waiting out the NFL lockout & staying in shape by training with our friend Scott Chandler. In five months he went from novice to a competition-ready surfer with Scott’s extreme coaching. Another really interesting person, and cool as hell. Oh, yeah, he’s back on the field September 8th - Packers vs. Saints. The Pro Am division of the RSSS is heating up this season with Michel Flores and Eric McHenry dueling for the title. Eric is our Three-peat Champion and is looking to make this his fourth title in 2011. Michel might have something to say about that. They both are tied in points leading up to the third event in Ocean Beach. Should make for some epic surfing. I wish them both good luck. Try to get down there and cheer them on. They’re among some of the best surfers that San Diegans call ‘our own’ and they appreciate your support. Plus, it’s just a great time on the beach & in the water with your friends. July 30th OB Pier, Ocean Beach - All Day Long. You never know who’ll show up... Peace B & L

Buster Biofuels The Revolt work truck (Big Blu) seen around San Diego is fueled by BioDiesel, so it was only fitting we reached out to partner with for our fuel needs & the surf series as well. Buster Biofuels initiates, establishes and services “green initiatives” for restaurants and companies in San Diego County. This means, they reclaim used cooking oil, then convert it to biodiesel that refuels diesel engines. Restaurants utilize Buster’s free oil collection service which strives to reduce petroleum dependency and carbon emissions. They have the oil recycled into biodiesel fuel which will soon be available for bulk sale in various blends such as B20, B50 and B99. Big Blue likes it because his exhaust smells like french fries. WHY I BOUGHT A NISSAN LEAF By Lynn Laumann
The 2011 Nissan LEAF is the first affordable Electric Vehicle (EV) available to the American public on a large scale. The LEAF has won numerous awards, including 2010 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award, IIHS “Top Safety Pick”, 2011 European Car of the Year, and 2011 World Car of the Year at the New York Auto Show. Now that I have my own LEAF, I will tell you why. The LEAF is simple. It is a battery electric vehicle (BEV), which consists of a big lithium-io n battery and a powerful electric motor. It is charged from a standard home 110v outlet, or an optional 240v home charger. The drive has the feel of heft and smoothness of a luxury car, but turns on a dime. Otherwise, it drives and handles like any other quality car. There are a number of reasons why I bought a Nissan LEAF. First, adoption of electric vehicles will improve America’s energy independence. Americans consume 21 million barrels of oil per day. Imagine how many millions of dollars of America’s wealth are sent overseas to OPEC countries every day, to pay for that oil. That money would be better spent creating clean energy jobs throughout our nation. Keeping our money in our country, and paying for clean electricity instead of imported oil is an economic stimulus in itself. Second, EVs are cleaner, quieter, smoother, and faster than a standard engine. In a milefor-mile comparison, the LEAF generates a tiny fraction of the greenhouse gas and particulate pollution that is produced by a gasoline engine. For an average American, buying an EV is the single most effective step we can take to reduce the impacts of climate change and reduce unhealthy pollution. While gasoline engines waste 85% of their fuel overcoming friction, generating heat, vibration and noise, the electric motor only wastes 15% of its energy overcoming friction.
The other 85% goes to the wheels, producing an impressive 100% torque from a standstill. The LEAF has a smooth, quick acceleration due to its single-speed transmission. It is also whisper-quiet, which adds to the Zen-like tranquility of the driving experience. Third, the LEAF is simple and inexpensive to operate. There are no smog checks, no oil changes, and no tune ups required. I expect the LEAF to be mechanically reliable. For example, the limited production 1997 Toyota RAV4 EVs lasted 150,000 miles on the original battery. The electric motor has only one moving part, so scheduled maintenance involves checking the brake fluid and coolant every year. Since the fuel is electricity, I can completely “fill-up” my LEAF at home, at night, for $1.68 using SuperOff Peak utility electricity rates, and drive 100 miles. I plug it into the wall in my garage, with the 25 foot cord that is included. Fourth, rebates. The State of California offered a $5,000 rebate, on top of the $7,500 federal tax incentive for the purchase of the LEAF in 2011. This brought the $35,000 purchase price down to $22,000. That’s not bad, considering that I will never pump a drop of gas into the LEAF. Fifth, the technology. When I mentioned that the LEAF was simple, I was only referring to the drivetrain. LEAFs are probably the most wired cars in the world. For example, from your smartphone or PC, you can remotely check the battery level charge level, start/stop battery charging, turn the climate control on/off, and check your fuel economy ranking in your region or worldwide. My LEAF has a sophisticated GPS navigation system, live traffic maps, backing camera, Bluetooth hands-free phone, XM satellite radio, and it accepts many types of music media such as CD, iPod or USB drive. It also has a small solar panel, which charges the accessory battery. So whether your reasons are altruistic, you want to be “more pious than a Prius”, you enjoy driving a sporty car, or you just want to save a bunch of money, check out the Nissan LEAF or other EV. Test drive one, that’s what sold me. I am convinced that you’ll be sold, too.

By Brian Terhorst Photos By Aaron Goulding (unless noted) June 11th,
80+ competitors gathered at the OB Pier to compete in the first event of the fifth annual Revolt Summer Surf Series Pro Am. While the rest of San Diego county was shrouded in ‘June Gloom’, the surfers were fortunate to find sunny skies and clean, waist to chest high waves waiting for them. Advancing tides in the afternoon generated head high sets that challenged all the competitors, providing some of the best action ever in RSSS history. While Michel Flores took top scores for the day (and $500.00), the Pro Am final points were extremely close and all of the riders showed exceptional talent and determination, splitting $1000.00 between them.

saw sunny skies and packed beaches for event #2 at Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach. Over 110 riders competed throughout the day in seven separate divisions. The waves were consistent chest to shoulder high with some larger sets rolling thru offering some of the funnest waves so far this summer. Once again, McHenry proves that human flight is possible as he took first place in the Pro Am division. Both the juniors and grom divisions had epic battles between the top riders in the final heats.

So, What do NFL Superbowl Champions do during the NFL lock-out? They compete in the Revolt Summer Surf Series! The July 9th event saw 2011 Superbowl Champion, Brett Swain (wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers, and local San Diegan) compete in the Stand Up Paddle division. Brett was the first NFL player ever to compete in a Pro Am surf series. Although he did not make it all the way to the finals, he demonstrated how a world class athlete competes under pressure.

FEATURED PRO
BRACKER
RYAN
Interview by Aaron Goulding Photo by Anthony Ghiglia Ryan Bracker, a San Diego native still has what it takes to be one of the best surfers in the county. Even with a professional commercial real estate career, Bracker manages to keep his sponsors happy by gaining recognition on nearly every swell. He has made several Surfline features as well as features in some of the top surf mags. Ryan surfs with grace and always manages to get shacked out of his mind. When the swell is up, he is a standout amongst the rest at the best spots in the area. Ryan is humble and friendly and stoked to ride any board on any wave. RIS: So when and where did you first stand up on a surf board?
24 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
RB: My first memory of standing up on a surf board was at Dog Beach in OB. I was 5 years old when my Dad started pushing me into waves. As a young kid I was more into skateboarding. When I was about 12 years old I got hooked on surfing and started competing with my friends Keil Miller, Greg Bergen and Randy Lind. RIS: What was about the ocean that sucked you in? RB: For me, surfing is a spiritual experience. It helps me to stay connected with the true essence of life. I love being so close to nature and being surrounded by all of the power and natural beauty of the ocean. RIS: Unlike most professional surfers, you also have a day job. How is it that you manage to get the best shots on the best swells with so much going on in your life? RB: I got into commercial real estate approx. 10 years ago because I knew it would allow me the flexibility in my work
schedule. Also, with all of the modern day surf forecasts and weather reports, it is easier to track the conditions and schedule my appointments. RIS: What amps you up before a sesh? RB: Coffee is a must for me in the mornings. I am usually the most excited when the waves are big and clean. RIS: Favorite Grinds? RB: I love food almost more than surfing. I enjoy cooking and eating healthy. I recently have started growing my vegetables and catching my own fish. I watched the movie Food Inc. and it has changed the way I look at eating. RIS: What was your favorite surf trip? RB: I have done several Indo trips and every one of them was amazing. Lately, I have been traveling down to Mainland Mexico. I can’t believe how good the waves are down there.
Athlete of the month
Ryan Bracker, lives in La Jolla and is a commercial real estate broker and pro surfer. Where you can usually find Ryan Bracker is in the barrel. A true soul surfer who’s been getting great pics lately at his home spot (Blacks Beach) He scores an awesome photo in this issue & also scores himself a $50 gift certificate from Wahoo’s Fish Tacos as Athlete of the Month. Congrats.
____________________________ RIS: Where would your dream surf destination be and what one person would you bring with you? RB: My dream trip would be warm water left hand sand points. It would look like Tahiti and have the food and culture of Bali. I would probably invite my Fiancée or Dad. RIS: I know you like to mix things up. I’ve seen you on SUP Boards and Hyrdrodynamica boards. What motivates you to try other things? RB: I have always enjoyed experimenting with different boards. I used to shape all of my own boards while I was in college. I think it is important for your surfing to mix up the boards you ride and take different lines.
RIS: What do you see for the future of surfing? RB: The future of surfing is constantly changing and pushing the limits. I think we are going to see more wave pools, bigger waves being surfed and more tricks. I think the basics of being a surfer and riding waves of all sizes with different boards will always be popular. RIS: Thanks for your time! Last words? RB: No major last words. Thanks for interviewing me and thanks to all my sponsors Rip Curl, Linden Surfboards, Sector 9, Dragon, Sanuk and Da Kine.

PRO SURFER
Interview by Brady Ruysschaert Photography by Aaron Goulding and Jeff Taich At just 15 years old, Harley Taich has what it takes to become one of the first female big wave chargers to come out of La Jolla. She has been seen this winter charging some of the larger days at Blacks, and has tested her skills at other big wave spots like Todos Santos Island. She’s fearless and confident and not afraid to take a beating. Harley trains hard, and is always surfing with a smile! Harley is a top USA Surfing America competitor. She has also taken a Western Women’s title and recently an International title in Central America. Harley Taich can be seen tearing up the local breaks here in La Jolla and San Diego. So keep your eyes peeled and say hello, and if you see her in the water don’t snake her!! RIS: Harley how old are you and where do you reside? HT: I am 15 years old from La Jolla California RIS: Do you think the surf in La Jolla has groomed the way you surf? And why? HT: Yes, for sure it has groomed the way I surf! I surf a lot of Blacks and the La Jolla Reefs. Blacks has made me comfortable with larger more powerful surf and it has made my surfing a lot more powerful and fluid. Big Rock has helped me with barrels and drops, and Windansea has helped me with linking waves. RIS: The pack of girls coming out in the surfing world is starting to become very talented. Being one among those girls, how do you feel about the others and the way they surf compared to you. HT: I am very impressed with some the female talents right now, certainly a few of those girls really stand out. However, what pushes me the most is the men’s level of surfing and it always has. Recently it seems like I hear a lot of commentators and people in the industry making comments about the women catching up to the men, I disagree. In my opinion, I don’t think women’s surfing will ever catch up to the men. I try not to compare myself too much to all of the other girls. I watch and study all of them surf and take note of the good things they do and try and do the same maneuvers they are doing. I feel that when I apply myself and really focus on what I am doing I surf as well as some of the girls on the WQS.
26 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
Photo by Aaron Goulding RIS: What do you plan on doing with your surfing? HT: Ultimately right now I am really focused on just becoming an all-around good surfer in all conditions, especially in larger more powerful waves. Although I spend most of my weekends competing, my main focus this year has been to push myself in larger surf at Blacks and Todos Santos. I enjoy bigger waves and the feelings I get when my stomach ties up in knots when I drop in on a large face. Someday in the future, I would like to tow Jaws or charge Mavericks. I really love doing contests and I want to continue to do them. I want to start doing some Women’s Pro Juniors and WQS events. RIS: What do you think the future of women’s surfing will look like? HT: What do you mean what it will look like? More pretty butts doing bottom turns? Hahha, for sure! There will probably be more pretty butts doing bottom turns but besides that women will probably be
taking to the air more and charging bigger waves. That seems to be the progression of surfing in general as well. RIS: Where is your favorite spot in the world and why? HT: That’s a hard one. Besides my local favorites Blacks and Windansea, most of my traveling has been to Tahiti, Fiji, and Australia. I’d have to say I really love an outer island off of Tahiti. It is absolutely gorgeous and the waves are super fun. There is a left and right reef pass, that are super hollow and I love that kind of a wave. I mostly treasure how laid back and relaxed the culture is and how you can just surf, eat and relax every day. You don’t have to worry about anything but falling and getting cut by the razor sharp reef and get eaten by the cockroaches, which are the size of a coconut. I still can’t get used to them... ha ha. continued on page 33
At just eleven years old Ryland is already legendary amongst some of the veterans at Black’s Beach for charging on some of the largest days. I have seen first-hand what Ryland is capable of and I am a fan. He surfs with grace and commitment and seems to have the wave knowledge of a pro surfer in their prime. Nearly a month ago, Ryland took 1st place in the WSA Championships and is a top contender in the NSSA. Don’t be surprised if you start hearing a lot more about this up-and-comer. Ryland Rubens is on his way to become a huge star in the surfing arena. Interesting fact: Ryland is bilingual. He speaks, reads, and writes fluent Spanish as a second language which has been helpful on trips to the South.

PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF Interview by Brian Terhorst Photo By Aaron Goulding
A
JIM
ELLINGTON
while back I jumped into my truck and turned the ignition. Looking up, I noticed there was a card under my wiper blade. Crap. Bar Flyer. I reached for it and realized it was actually a business card. Handwritten on the back was a note, “I heard you wanted to do a piece on me, I would consider it an honor if the interview was done by you personally.” It was Jim Ellington’s business card. I smiled. One of the best names in hand shaped surfboards out of San Diego had just given me a compliment. Fast forward a year or so: I am standing in a modest (and unusually clean) shaping shack down off of Morena Blvd. Next door is Skip Frye, the other wall is Josh Hall and Michael Miller. Jim is in good company. It’s kind of an artisan’s co-op made up of some of surfing legends and their apprentices. Jim Ellington is one of the legends. His name is synonymous with the San Diego surf scene. We’ve known his work for decades, hearing local riders brag about their new Ellington boards, and how they rip. So, I finally got the chance to Interview the infamous Jim Ellington:
RIS: Give us a quick rundown on how you got started in the industry JE: It began for me in 1975 on the North Shore. The only work that a Haoli like myself could land was at the rock bottom of the industry, hand sanding blanks, cutting out skateboards decks & fins for Dick Brewer. I survived off the fruit hanging in the trees, a half pound of hamburger and a little bag of rice each week. Tom Parish gave me a job when I really needed one and that kicked it into gear. He supplied me with some templates & gave me encouragement. I always loved checking out his boards & thought they were the cleanest around. In ‘78 I met Shaun Tomson, when he won the World Championship. I was doing all his ding repairs, in fact I did all the ding repairs for Rabbit Bartholomew, Peter Townend, Ian Cairns, Mark Richards. But I have a spot in my heart for Shaun cause he would talk to me & treated me like an individual even though I was just a grom.
Best Story- In 78 Shaun Tomson & Rabbit Bartholomew were surfing against each other at Pipeline. In between heats Shaun comes to me with his favorite board. It had a huge ding in the rail. He said, “Mate, I don’t know what I gonna do?” I told him, “Shaun I’m gonna get you back in the water. I’ll be down there. How much time do I have?” “Forty five minutes” he told me. So, I used a hair dryer on the hole, patched it, shaved it down, glassed it really hot. Forty five minutes later, I was running it back down the beach from my house about a half mile away. I could hear them announcing the final heat. I see him about to go in the water, I start yelling “Shaun, Shaun”. He sees me & yells, “Mate, Mate” He drops his board.... The announcers are yelling “What’s Shaun doing?” over the PA. Shaun grabs the board from me & says “You saved my life!” I felt so good, ‘cause there were two shots in Surfer Magazine that month with Shaun on the same board. One with a clean rail, the other with my patch job. At the time they were filming for the movie Free Ride. Rabbit is in the first half, then after intermission it’s about Shaun Tomson. He comes up this trail & shakes my hand & that was all caught on film. It made me feel good when I got home, because all my friends from San Diego saw that. That was a great time of my life right there, when people would yell “There’s Ellington!”
I came back from Hawaii in 1980. Got married & started making surfboards for Jeff Kinney at the Surf Club. I shaped out of my garage on Grand Ave for 15 years. Made a lot of boards out of that garage...5,000 boards. Later I moved to South Bay & worked with Jeff Alexander, ghost shaping a little for him. He taught me alot about concaves & things of that nature. Getting the boards cleaner, crisper. I wasn’t that great of a finisher up till then, he taught me a lot about that. Since then I’ve gone on to shape 15,284 boards. I’m really proud of those numbers & I keep track of them. All hand shaped. There’s a lot of learning and a lot of disappointments along the way. I think I’m on track to my best times ever RIS: What’s the difference between Ellington of the past and Ellington right now? JE: Totally working with people. Not keeping that cocky attitude I used to have about shaping a board. “Yeah I know what you want....” It’s about customer service, getting them into the shaping room, working with them, asking them questions & picking their brain. From a beginner, to intermediate, to an expert. From shortboards, to fish, longboards or just a simple egg shape for a little girl. Doesn’t matter who... it’s all about working with them. RIS: How do you see the industry changing? JE: The past two and a half years saw the industry fall apart. It really just collapsed. The shops weren’t selling a thing. So I really spent time at the local breaks in Mission & PB. Just going around introducing myself and asking questions. “How do you like that board?” & ”Would you be interested in coming in & checking out some of my shapes?”. It was a slow process, but it worked. Now it’s just order after order. Getting to know what people are liking and not liking. I think there’s great things to come God willing. Everyday is a different day. But I love how it’s going. For the video interview check out www.revoltinstyle.com

WHAT IF’S AND WHATEVER’S Questions and Photo by Joe Foster I got a call one day from my friend Kevyn Dean from DSC training one day telling me about some grom named Ethan. He said the kid ripped and had a great work ethic and mad potential. Of course I was curious so I set up a shoot with Ethan. From the very beginning I could tell he was different that most of all the other groms I shoot. One, he had this quiet confidence about him, not over frothed out but very focused. I thought hmm, this should be interesting. From this day forward I was sold on this kid. Insane work ethic, huge airs, insane hunger and drive, does not forget about rail surfing and style and is just as importantly a really great person. Ethan Carlston is gonna keep getting better and will be around for a long time.

LONGBOARDER
RIS: How long have you been riding bikes? IW: I have been riding bikes pretty much all my life, But didn’t start doing tricks until a couple of years ago.
Interview by Aaron Goulding, Photos by Erin Wood RIS: You kill it on the longboard. How long did it take you to get as good as you are now? IW: I have been surfing since I was 4 years old. So I’d say well over 25 years... RIS: Have you always only longboarded or do you ride other board shapes as well? IW: No, I grew up riding short boards. In High School, I played Football and gained a bunch of weight which caused me to ride bigger eggier short boards. My dad got a 9’0 noserider when I was in 10th grade. Not long after he let me try it... from that day I was hooked on bigger equipment. I never fully stopped riding short boards, which later helped me adapt to all sizes and shapes of boards. For a while now I have been riding everything from Finless alias, short thrusters and eggs all the way to 10 ft., 24” wide noseriders. My favorite thing is to explore the limits of shape and design. My Isaac Wood Models are all different each having a purpose and a wave that works best for them. Steve Seebold, Bob Mitzven and I have been working really hard to fine tune older ideas that worked and combining them with Todays rockers and concaves. Kind of combining the best of Now and Then... RIS: Tell me about your other action sport professions. IW: At around the age of 4 my dad taught me to surf, skate and ride bikes. I didn’t do little league or any other team sports, so those three became my everyday activities. Off and on throughout the years I have been sponsored in skateboarding G&S is still one of my Skate sponsors. But in the last 4 years, as a form of exercise I started riding Hard-Tail MTN bikes. Since then it has kind of become my alter ego. Within the first year I was doing back flips and building dirt jumps all over San Diego. I compete sometimes in DH and Dirt Jumping but riding bikes is more of a release for me. Surfing is my true passion but Cork flips on my bike are a hard thing to stop doing...
RIS: Biggest longboard move? IW: It’s hard to say what biggest is in longboarding. If it’s high performance longboarding, its reversals. If it’s hardest, its switch stance-reverse walk-to heels-to reverse walk-back to regular stance. Check www.isaacwood.com for the video haha (a little plug there) A couple of things I am working on that I have pulled just not on video yet...are no-footed can airs, and supermanIndian airs. I am trying to incorporate my bike tricks to surfing, RIS: Biggest BMX move? IW: Under flip. RIS: Metallica or Prince? IW: Iron Maiden! RIS: Any big events coming up for you in the near future? IW: The rest of the Revolt Series and Call to the Wall contest in July. Tahoe for a bike shoot in August, and a Video shoot in Puerto Escondido in September. RIS: Hang ten or huge lip hit? IW: It depends...when and where. Malibu... hang ten. the beach breaks... hit the lip. RIS: Please speak now or forever hold your peace… IW: Thanks Aaron and Revolt for taking the time to talk with me. And a huge thanks to my Wife Erin who helps me more than anything… and my sponsors, G&S Surfboards/Skateboards, Hotline wetsuits, Sticky Bumps, Dickies Apparel, Rainbow Fin Co, Smith Optics, Zinka, Vitamin Blue, Guayaki Yerba Mate, Triple8, Transition Bikes, Gravity components, Birds Surf Shed, and JOE ROPER Ding Repair for making it possible for me to make a living doing what I love. CARL EKSTROM TO BE HONORED AT SACRED CRAFT EXPO
In October of 2011 the Sacred Craft Consumer Surfboard Expo will honor Carl Ekstrom during the ‘Tribute to the Masters Shape-off’ presented by US Blanks. The forward thinking Ekstrom’s rejuvenated asymmetrical surfboard concept (germinated in the ‘60s) is the focus with a verve entrenched in the design’s proven performance. Ekstrom’s suggestion is that this year’s shape-off not be replications, but rather new creations. In honoring the iconic Windansea Surf Club member, a selection of shapers will be asked to create whatever board they desire, the only parameter: it must be asymmetrical. The winner will receive $1K. “This is great, I’m very stoked,” said Carl Ekstrom. “The asymmetrical design is obviously unique. There is a renewed interest, and it’s all very fresh and interesting. I’m shaping a lot of boards these days: experimenting, tweaking, changing. It’s what I love, so it’ll be fun to see what these extraordinary craftsman come up with.” Plan to enjoy all the great exhibits: Art of Shaping LA Edition Auction presented by Billabong, ‘Antique Roadshow’ style surfboard and memorabilia appraisals, live laminating demos, the Golden Ticket surfboard giveaway, the Art Grotto, Korduroy TV lounge, Quintessential Quivers lounge, Longboard Skatezone, 2012 fullsuits on sale, surfers playing music for surfers including Seth Pettersen, movies, PRIMO beer, great food, incredible deals on surfboards and much more. October 8 & 9 At the Del Mar Fairgrounds - $10 at the door; kids 12 & under free. For more info go to: www. sacredcraftexpo.com

HARLEY TAICH continued from pg. 26 RIS: Who is your local crew you like to surf with and why? HT: I really like to surf with my Dad especially when it is big because there is less time for him to yell at me if I do something wrong. I also enjoy surfing with all of the crew at Windansea, without mentioning names, they know who they are. They push my level of surfing. RIS: With ripping, comes sponsors, how do you work with your sponsors to make them happy? HT: I am very lucky and fortunate to have all of the support I have from my sponsors. There are not a lot of surf companies based out of San Diego, and there have always been a lot of guys that rip down here that are sponsorless, and I’m happy to be recognized and sponsored by Matuse wetsuits, Sharp Eye Surfboards, and FCS. I believe in representing the products as best as I can. If that means holding my board for podium shots or help advertising the company I always do what I can. Hmm I don’t know, I guess just being myself, naturally friendly, in and out of the water probably reflects well on my sponsors. When I’m surfing well both in contests and in free surfs is also a good representation as well. I’m stoked because I really like all of the products I use from the companies I ride for. RIS: What do you like to do in your free time? HT: In my free time I do a lot of cooking. I have always had a dream of having my own show on Food Network, and hopefully someday that dream will come true. I also do a lot of cross training, like yoga and running because it helps my surfing in a lot of ways. I also love to watch movies, and just kick back with my friends and family. RIS: Would you like to say thank you to anyone? HT: Yes, I would like to thank all of my sponsors: Fox, Matuse Wetsuits, Reef, Electric, Dakine, Tonic Hair Care, Sharp Eye Surfboards, FCS, and South Coast Surf Shop. Thank you Marcio (Sharp Eye surfboards), for shaping me almost a dozen surfboards a year, for the last five years, good boards are everything! I would also like to thank Revolt in Style Magazine, Aaron Goulding, and especially my Dad for giving me a special lifestyle that I will have forever.

They discuss their favorite fighters, including legends like Randy Couture and young guns like Jon Jones. They talk about matchups such as the upcoming George St. Pierre versus Nick Diaz fight, predicted to be an epic battle. And they gossip about scandals involving athletes including Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt, both caught for steroid use in the past year. But how many of these fans truly think about the future? Do they think about where the sport will be in 10 years? Do they question how far the athletes will have evolved by then? Do they wonder who the stars of tomorrow will be? At The Arena, the San Diego MMA gym known for having one of the best fight teams in the business, the trainers there are already planning for this future. For now, these plans come in the form of Alexander “Xander” Dumas Jr. and Kai Kramer.
You might have seen the Tapout commercials, showing two little warriors hitting pads and displaying some slick moves. Those kids, known as the Ruffo brothers, have become overnight MMA celebrities. They Wrestle, train Muay Thai, and are both orange belts in Jiu Jitsu. Because of this, they are constantly pointed to as the future of MMA. But The Arena has 2 young warriors of its own who will also be claiming their stake in the MMA world soon enough. And these 2 special athletes definitely have the skills and accomplishments to back it up. Xander, 12 years old, has been training in Martial Arts since 2004. Among his numerous accomplishments, within his age and weight brackets, Xander is the 2 time San Diego County Wrestling Champion, 4 time Southern California Pankration Champion, the IKF International Kickboxing Champion and the IKF Muay Thai Champion. He is also the winner of the 2011 USA National Championships for Pankration, a sport very similar to MMA but with rules in place to make it even safer. This most recent accomplishment earned him a spot
34 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
on the USA Junior Team who will be competing in Hungry in Nov. 2011. Xander is also a continuous Honor Roll student, as well as winner of numerous other academic awards. Kai, the older of the two at age 13, is right up there with Xander in his achievements and has also been training since he was 5. He is a Black Belt in Shorin-ryu Karate, an Orange Belt in Jiu Jitsu, and is a top-ranked California Junior Wrestler. Kai has won the San Diego Karate Grand Internationals and the Golden State Open Judo Invitational. He has also placed second in the USA Pankration National Championships and has dominated the majority of Wrestling matches he has been through in recent years, including recently winning the San Diego State qualifier. Like Xander, he is also an exceptional student. He has a 4.00 in school and is fluent in Japanese, a language he uses when he goes to Japan to cross train with some of their elite junior athletes. . With such accomplishments already under their belts, it’s most likely the future will involve Mixed Martial Arts for both Xander and Kai. Clearly their training has only benefited their academic life, which is a frequent result when kids train in Martial Arts. And both their fathers, Alexander Dumas Sr. and David Kramer, know the importance of balance. They give their sons just as much as they need when it comes to their training, never pushing them hard enough to burn them out. It will be interesting to follow this young dynamic duo as they mature and continue on their Martial Arts destiny. Hopefully they stay on the path long enough to one day show skills as Professional fighters that fans have yet to see. With both starting Martial Arts at age 5 and continuously training since then, it’s hard to imagine them not being dominant in the future. Unless of course some other kids come along who started training a few years earlier in their lives and were able to get that much more of a head start. But one thing is certain. The future of MMA is most definitely the kids who will be evolving the sport over the upcoming years. And that future looks incredibly bright. ARTIST PROFILE
TIM HENDRICKS R.I.S. GETS A SESH WITH NY INK’S 2ND IN COMMAND By Shawn Buss and Sean Hoy
T
im Hendricks is a second-generation artist, taught by his father at a young age. Since he was was old enough to grip a pencil and ride a surfboard, skateboard or motorcycle (all of which, he has a pretty fair grasp) he has been pursuing a life of art and leisure. He got his start by tattooing in the neighborhood he grew up in during his mid-teens, tattooing local Hispanics hoodlums and punk rockers. He is now known in the industry as one of the finest freehand artists on the planet. Hendricks’ work is a blend of Latino & Japanese influences with Catholic iconography and the vivid colors and iconography of street art. As of late, he’s been working on a new project you may have heard of...NY INK? For those of you who live under rocks, the show captures the daily adventures of Wooster Street Social Club in New York City, Ami James’ latest business venture / tattoo shop. Actually it’s a bit more than that, It’s a stylish space in
36 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
the soho district, housing six or so of the country’s finest tattoo artists and their apprentices. They allow cameras to follow their daily grind surrounding unreal skin art and the stories behind each tattoo. This satiates the voyeuristic desires of both seasoned tattoo junkies as well as those that have never set foot inside a shop (but have always wondered what the hell goes on behind those curtains). It is apparent that Tim was chosen for more than a couple of reasons as second in command to Ami. Not only is he a world class tattoo artist but his cool head and negotiating skills have probably saved a few lives on the show. After the recent wrap of their first season, Tim is back out on the Left Coast, spending most of his time drawing, tattooing, riding his motorcycles and surfing away his days. We caught up with the legendary tattoo artist and discussed his craft, his influences and the correlation between tattoos and motorcycles.
RIS: If you have more than one bike, do you have a favorite and why? TH: I only have one bike right now, but it’s a bike I’ve always wanted. It’s a 2009 Dyna, I’ve always wanted a Dyna. I guess I’m just a simple man ya know, but when you grow up poor like I did, your dreams are simple. RIS: Where did you learn how to work on or build bikes? TH: I built my flathead in my old bosses garage out of standard tools and a Dremel, no joke! He took me over to a guy named Chica to find some parts for my Shovelhead project. After going by Chica’s shop enough times he took a shine to me and told me to bring my bike by and I could build it there, I was ecstatic! Chica taught me everything, how to build every style engine, how to make a frame, weld properly, and all the little nick nacks and odds and ends every bike builder should know, I am a lucky son-of-a-bitch. Now days though I just get on that fucker, turn the key and ride, ya gotta love it. RIS: Do you go to any of the rallies and if so do you have a favorite and why? TH: I go to Laughlin now and then. I really like the Laughlin run, it’s not too far from California and I always end up seeing a lot of my friends there. Once me and Corey Miller went out there and tattooed like madmen, it was non stop tattooing, we didn’t even get a chance to walk around and enjoy our trip! Wild.
“IF YOU”RE GOING THROUGH HELL... KEEP GOING”
RIS: What shop are you currently working at? TH: I work between Gold Rush Tattoo in Costa Mesa California, and Love Hate (Miami Ink). RIght now though, I’m in New York City working on NY INK with Ami James.
RIS: What is your favorite part about riding? TH: Shit I don’t know, that’s like asking me what is my favorite part of getting high, it’s all pretty much amazing. RIS: Anything else you would like to share with the folks in the tattoo or bike communities? TH: Thanks for all the support throughout my whole career, I’d like to thank anyone I have ever had the pleasure of working with or any tattooer who has given something back to the table of tattooing. I feel I should thank Chica for teaching me how to properly build a bike from the ground up. I know I am a hard man to get a tattoo from, and I get a lot of emails about when I’ll be taking appointments again. The producers of LA Ink and Miami Ink are looking for people who want amazing tattoos with amazing stories behind them who live in New York, if you don’t live in New York you must be available to come to New York City. If you are interested please email them immediately and tell them your story. Email: NYInkcasting@gmail.com Please put “NY INK” in the subject title. Include your name, age, where you live, TEL #, type of tattoo you want (be as detailed as possible), your photo, your occupation, tell us your story behind what you want to get and tell us if you have other tattoos already.
RIS: Tell us a bit about your tattoo career and where it has taken you? TH: Well that’s a very long story, but I’ll try and condense it as best as possible. I started tattooing professionally in the early 90’s almost twenty years ago... jesus I’m getting old. I learned how to tattoo neighborhood style, you know like home-made machines and shit, after a little bit I got real lucky and met a girl who’s dad was a tattooer (Rick Walters), since dads can’t say no to their daughters wishes very easily, he sold me a real tattoo machine. I started teaching myself to tattoo and had no shortage of clients. My neighborhood was full of them. Eventually I started making friends that tattooed and payed enough attention while getting tattooed, that I learned to lay in a ‘passable’ tattoo. I did ‘passable’ tattoos for years and never gave two shits about being some fancy tattooer. Then I realized that if I got good at tattooing, I could start traveling more. So I sold my soul to the devil and just like that, BAM, I was good. My career has taken me to the far corners of the world, I have seen some of the most beautiful things the world has to offer and I owe it all to tattooing. I have no problem with entitlement issues right now in my life, I am not owed just because I’ve been tattooing almost 20 years, I figure the longer I’ve been tattooing the more I owe. I’ve been given the gift of tattooing which has kept me out of jail, given me a life and everything I am; for that... I owe. RIS: How do you feel riding correlates with your profession as a tattoo artist? TH: You mean besides the obvious? Shit man, it seems like everyone has a tattoo these days. I didn’t learn how to tattoo the way all these new kids are learning. Some of these fuckers can’t even draw a name for christ’s sake. It’s all artsy fartsy now days. I learned how to tattoo around gangsters and bikers, it was that typical seedy type of environment that sadly enough people still associate ALL tattoos with. I don’t know many bikers or motorcycle enthusiasts that don’t have some kind of tattoo relating to there lifestyle, it goes with the territory. RIS: How long have you been riding for? TH: Shit man, I don’t know, 90% my life I guess. RIS: What influenced you to get into riding? TH: My best friend’s dad in grade school used to take us on trips to Glamis and shit like that, then when I was a teenager I got a hand-me-down street bike and just went nuts on the thing, I’m surprised I lived through it all. RIS: How many bikes have you had and or built over that time period? TH: Not as many as I would’ve liked to! But I built my first Harley Davidson in my early twenties, it was a 1945 flathead, a 45 cubic inch. It was a good starter bike but it didn’t last long, It was too slow. Even though it was just a ‘bar hopper’ I wanted to get to the bar faster! I ended up getting a ‘79 Shovelhead and fell in love with that bike. Since then I have built a few others for myself, bikes for friends and helped out on a some really cool projects.

CAN YOU SPOT....
THE NEW OWNER OF SPIN? 38窶ジWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
MEET THE NEW BOSS
By Leslie Terhorst Photos by Michael Crouch & Jay Lee Did you figure it out? I’d like to introduce you to Daniel Maris; he’s in the middle on the left. Typically when you see a college student they’re partying in the club, they definitely don’t own it. But this Cal State Fullerton student has bigger things on his mind other than just showing up for the party; he wants to throw the party. Daniel’s family has been in the bar and entertainment industry most of his life, so it was no surprise that when he came of age, this is what he wanted to do. If you’re not familiar with SPIN, here are some fun facts: It has 3 Levels. This 10,000 Sq. Ft. entertainment complex is dedicated to serious sound. It’s 70,000 watts of real Thunderous Avalon Sound, Kinetic Lighting, and Lasers on the main floor, create an atmosphere that is compared to none. Boasting two separate dance floors, open-air roof deck with city views of downtown, unlimited free parking, and a restaurant serving all night long (till 6am), which means the party won’t end at 1:45, it ends when you feel like going home. Seriously, what else could you ask for in a nightclub? Oh you want some insane music? This is also the right place. With some of the worlds top DJ’s and bands performing, this is sure to be your one stop shop to party all night long. After a fun afternoon of photo’s, a little vodka Redbull’s, and bikini models, I sat down with Daniel to find out more about the man behind the club. RIS: What did you think of the photo shoot? DM: The photo shoot with Revolt In Style was a first for me, and to be honest I had a blast! What young guy isn’t going to like a few stunning models next to him while representing Spin Nightclub? The ideas of the photos taken and the photographers themselves were extremely professional, so thank you Revolt, Mike & Jay, as well as the girls for a great first shoot! RIS: You’re a pretty young guy to own a nightclub. I mean most of the guys your age are just promoting shows, but you’re actually producing them. Is this something you’ve always wanted to do? DM: It’s actually funny that I took that extra step into the business. I’m only 23 and still a student but I actually started out as a Pre-Med major at Cal State Fullerton and decided Business was more of my strong point. My parents ran a sports bar for 17 years so I grew up learning anything and everything to do with the industry. I guess it just came naturally to own a nightclub. Spin was the right place for me, in an amazing city with great people and lots of potential! It just shows that if you have the will power and the right ideas you can pursue anything you want. The answer to your question is YES, I love my job and what my team has in store for the near future is going to blow everyone away, stay tuned!
RIS: Let’s talk about Spin its self. Spin’s been somewhat of an Enigma. We’re a little puzzled on what kind of club it is. Could you describe Spin to those who haven’t been there before, and what makes Spin unique from other clubs? DM: There’s some interesting responses I could put on the table but I have to repeat what a close friend told me when he first visited Spin: “Danny, this place is like a club, event center, underground warehouse, lounge and bar in one building, all you need is some food!” Well, I’ll tell you what, now we have food too thanks to my amazing mother who brings her homemade cooking to the rooftop every night until the early hours! Lets just say we’re able to throw all types of events but are best known for our EDM (Electronic Dance Music) scene with high caliber DJ’s, a Full AVALON Sound system and some of the best lighting in San Diego. People really dig the environment when they come visit; its unique, its different and it leaves you wanting more. RIS: What are some of the hopes, and exciting plans you have in the future for Spin? DM: There is just too much to list! But I will say that we are working very hard and diligently to get all of our ideas and plans into full-blown productions. I do however want to emphasize something to the readers: Spin’s team and myself are currently in complete work-mode; we have very big plans and events in store for the near future that will be putting Spin back on the map when it comes to big EDM talent & live performances. Being a younger individual in this industry helps me really be on the same page as most club-goers. I think people can really appreciate that I have some of the same ideas they do and that’s something I want to take advantage of and really deliver. RIS: Now tell us about some of the acts you have coming to town? DM: As far as the bigger talent and world renown DJ’s and live performers go, I WISH I could tell everyone what we have in store…but that would really ruin the surprise I have planned for you, San Diego. For now I will say that I am in the process of putting my team together and creating my own productions company within Spin that will really bring some high caliber names in the coming months. On another note, I think people are just really tired of ending their party at 1:30AM downtown with nothing to do after. That’s why we’ve created the Moonlight & Sunrise brands launching this August that will shuttle you back and forth from PB & Downtown in buses all night, bringing multiple headliners in one night and having the party go all morning till 8AM, allowing us to re-open the bar at 6AM. I think club-goers all around will be stoked to feel free of the crazy parking; early club closings and headaches of downtown when they figure out what Moonlight & Sunrise are all about. This is the new Spin. With fresh ideas, new minds, and a new very appealing attitude.
RIS: What’s your favorite part about owning a nightclub? DM: I have to first say that all of you San Diegan’s are awesome! I’m originally from Orange County and am moving soon, but being able to meet a ton of new people, expose them to some amazing talent, fun nights and overall some purely well produced shows…that’s what makes me enjoy what I do. On the work end of this project, there was a lot for me to come in and try to improve. People really enjoy the small but effective changes and after a lot of interior work with our team and myself, we’ve really been able to push a higher caliber of production within the venue. Our goal is to really meet each individual wants, and I’m glad I’m in the position to make that happen. And of course I truly thank my family for this opportunity and my friends that always stuck by me through these transitions!

G Roy is probably one of the reasons you like to go clubbing in San Diego. He’s one of the most sought after DJ’s in town, playing anywhere from Fluxx, Voyeur or Sting to Bar West Hard Rock or Side Bar & back to his home tables at the Fleetwood in the East Village. By day he runs the entertainment & marketing for both The Beachwood and The Fleetwood, by night he creates a funky scene on dance floors all over San Diego. His influences range from Wu tang & Beastie Boys to Chemical Brothers and Hip Hop, but he’s anything but old school. He has
performed with the likes of DJ AM, Tiesto, Mix Master Mike and Grandmaster Flash but he’s not relying on anyone but himself. Lately he’s been upping his productions with his label Fortune Music (fortune421.com) His monthly mix series Pura Vida is available online at www.djgroy.com or just get out there & catch him live.

Bob Schneider – Belly Up Tavern At the age of sixteen Apaulo8 (aka Apaulo Infinite) hit the festival and rave scenes as a Dj, mixing Hip Hop and Break Beats, performing with some of the biggest names in Hip Hop including Nas and Outkast. At 20 years of age he founded a band called Lighter Side Of Being, getting more into the live aspect of music, playing guitar, rapping, singing, and mixing jamband styles with reggae, hip hop and a pop aesthetic. Lighter Side has gone on to do shows with Bob Weir, Umphree’s Magee, and more, but it wasn’t until he started working with Garret and Mark Boyce of G Love And Special Sauce that he got his break.

This alliance formed a new band and a hit album in Southern California named 3rd Borough, which instantly put him on the map as a fresh voice in the SoCal music scene. 3rd Borough’s eclectic mix of cameos by heavy hitters (Wu Tang Clan, Jurassic 5,Slightly Stoopid, G Love and Special Sauce) made an album that was extremely unique.
Something like the beatles meets modern hip hop. This lead to him appearing on stage as a featured MC and vocalist with all types of acts, including Knowa Knowone, Main Flow (of the Blackstar/Talib Kweli camp) G Love and more. Apaulo is currently releasing his first solo album through Street Ritual, putting together a Dub/Glitch / Hip Hop /Pop sound that can’t be resisted. If you wanna sweat, dance, cry, and laugh, this act will not let you down. The next level of west coast music, conscious lyrics, cross pollinating with dubstep and glitch-hop dance beats. SOUND ADVICE
HEAR THIS Reviews By Leslie Terhorst
THE HORRORS – SKYING
Genre- Punk/Alt I don’t think a band has ever reinvented itself as suddenly and drastically as The Horrors. Dismissed just four years ago as a cartoon garage band, a London scene in-joke whose first release ‘Strange House’ painted them as little more than a second rate Hives. However, no one, not even the great Nostradamus himself could have predicted what happened next. ‘Skying’ is a magnificent celebration of past, present and future welded together under one myopic musical melting pot. Skying’s fascination with the better musical elements of the 1980s comes to the forefront on ‘Dive In’, its quaint guitar sound echoing, well, Echo and the Bunnyman - Bring On The Dancing Horses or mid-period The Smiths such as ‘Meat Is Murder’ to a tee. This time, the band recorded and produced in their own studio, crafting a sound that recalls both the gothic pomp of 80s new wave, and the big-screen dreaming of early-90s shoegaze direction. Probably the key ingredient to any successful shoegaze venture is atmosphere, and it’s that which proves to be Skying’s greatest strength. It’s a record which is capable of whisking you off into it’s own little world, both as a whole and within individual tracks. Release Date: Aug 9, 2011
Trivium – In Waves Genre – Metal/Alt/Rock
They say, “good things come in waves,” for Trivium this couldn’t be truer. Having toured with rock legend icons like Iron Maiden, Slipknot, Metallica, Heaven & Hell and many more, it’s been said that Trivium rocks harder, screams louder, and makes the audience mosh crazier, than the headliners they came to see. In Waves has more hooks, catchy riffs and sing-a-long lyrics than most artists on Billboard’s top 10 pop today. This is the music we’re going to be hearing on Classic Rock stations in 20 years. Don’t worry, they have not detracted from the guitar-driven edge, that fans have come to love and expect from the band. Trivium does push some of the tracks even further in their heaviness and aggression. The visual and lyrical world that “In Waves” inhabits is overall a fantastic leap forward for the band. Inspired as much by contemporary film and visual arts, as by the band’s love of heavy music, all of the imagery, including album art, videos, stage sets, and web properties, takes Trivium into territory that few bands have the confidence, or vision to go there. The visuals create the unique world of In Waves, where the entire album package will take the listener on a journey where the destination may not have even been decided yet, much less known. It’s a wide, open road and one littered with darkness and other curiosities. Release Date: Aug 9, 2011
12 Stones - Only Human
NEW RELEASES
Genre – Grunge/Rock It was the release of the 2007 Anthem for The Underdog album that first brought 12 Stones to my attention. I still workout to ‘Adrenaline.’ The New Orleans band’s previous albums and singles have sold over two million copies in the U.S., in addition to singer Paul McCoy winning a Grammy® Award for “Best Hard Rock Performance” for his contribution on Evanescence’s “Bring Me To Life” smash hit single which went on to sell over 14 million albums worldwide. Only Human defines many of the qualities that transparently represent who Paul McCoy (vocals), Eric Weaver (guitar), Justin Rimer (guitar), Michael McManus (drums) are mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. As guitarist Justin Rimer explains, “We all have inner struggles as humans and temptations in life. While we don’t always choose the right path the first time, we learn from our experiences and become stronger. We all make mistakes and fall short sometimes, but it is the art of learning from these experiences that makes all the difference.” Singer Paul McCoy adds, “The album title comes from knowing that we all eventually fall short of our expectations regardless of financial, emotional, physical well being. But in the same breath, we all strive to find a way to better ourselves. That’s human nature. There are always two sides to people. It’s all about realizing that we all bleed the same. We are ALL human.” If you like Breaking Benjamin, Pearl Jam, or Linkin Park, then I suggest picking up a copy. Release Date: September 6, 2011

Cowboys and Aliens
(Universal) A delightfully silly 60s Mexican sci-fi flick called Ship of Monsters may have given us our first taste of cowboys versus aliens but Jon Favreau’s adaptation of the graphic novel will give us a much bigger, flashier, and more star-studded version of such an interspecies showdown. Daniel Craig looks hot, Harrison Ford looks old, and the effects look pretty kick-ass. Favreau did well with Iron Man so I’ll give this one a chance. Opening July 29.

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon
(Paramount) Transformers 2 was shit. Transformers 3 is an improvement; it’s only crap. Michael Bay’s noisy, CGI-driven summer epic pummels viewers for more than 2 and a half hours. The biggest suspension of disbelief we’re asked to make is not that cars can transform into robots but that Shia LaDouchebag can bed Megan Fox and now Victoria Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. And WTF are Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, and John Turturro (didn’t he learn anything from being in the last one?) doing in this? Please don’t give this film your money. It only encourages mindless crap. If you crave action go see Fast Five again instead. Opening June 29.
Horrible Bosses
(Warner Bros.) Well here’s something everyone can identify with -bosses that drive them crazy. The fun here is that the bad bosses are played by Kevin Spacey (corporate ), Jennifer Aniston (sexually harassing her staff), and Colin Farrell (given a receding hairline and a penchant for bigotry). Or as the poster bills them: Psycho, Maneater, and Tool. Seth Green directs this comedy that should appeal to the lowest common denominator. Opening July 8.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2
Warner Bros) Finally it all ends. The studio has milked this lucrative franchise as far as it possibly can by splitting the final installment into two parts. But now the last film arrives and Warners will have to milk a new cash cow. Helmed again by David Yates, the final chapter boasts a wealth of talented performers and an ever darkening tone. This is an event film that all Potter fans will be lining up for. Opening July 15.

(Paramount) Summer superheroes got off to a decent start with the innocuous Thor and uneven X-Men: First Class. Then it dipped for Green Lantern. Now we’re getting Chris Evans as Captain America. Which way will Joe Johnston’s comic book entry tip the scales? The Avengers film that will pull all these Marvel franchises together has already started shooting so no matter what we’ll be seeing more of Evans as Captain America. Opening July 22.
The Man Who Fell To Earth
(Rialto Pictures) The 35th anniversary of Nicolas Roeg’s trippy sci-fi drama has prompted Rialto Pictures to strike some new 35mm prints and give the film a re-release. David Bowie is perfectly cast as an alien that comes to earth to get water for his dying planet. But he underestimates the dangers of cutthroat corporate America. A cult classic well worth seeing on the big screen. Opening July 29 at Landmark’s Ken Cinema.
