“LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW”
BLAH BLAH
PUBLISHER’S NOTE Well, there we have it friends. The little tune that’s been ringing in my ears for the past few weeks means alot more at the moment, as the snow reports for our mountain resorts roll in. There’s a bunch of fresh powder dumping at all the resorts as we go to press. So it’s time to grab our snow gear and go get some fresh powder. This Issue is chock full of killer snow content for your reading (and viewing) pleasure. The 2011 Spring Resort Report has everything you need to know before heading up to Big Bear, Mt. High or Mammoth. The Winter X Games are well represented in this issue (awesome shot of Shaun White on the cover). We have exclusive interviews with Gold medalist John Teller and the legendary Mammoth Mountain snowboarder Bobby George. We test ride the newest gear that Burton Snowboards has to offer and even the Ten On 10 model shows us her sexy/snow side while modeling the latest outfit for chopping wood. I know there is a great joke in there somewhere, but I’ll leave that up to you. We are excited to share our time with Zakk Wylde at the Hard Rock Hotel here in San Diego. Best known for his ‘God-Like’ guitar work over the years with Ozzy, he has been out on his own performing w/ his band Black Label Society as of late. These guys are performing all over Europe right now, but will be returning home this spring for some stateside gigs (including a stop here in San Diego). Stay tuned for an opportunity to hang out with the uncompromising, unfiltered, no bullshit rock’n’roll band at the House of Blues in May The surf section this month is overflowing with great features on riders, shapers, iconic rastafarian soul surfers and more. Aaron Goulding has been stepping up with incredible photo sessions with some of the most influential surfers & shapers around. Hats off to our new surf editor and his crew. Keep up the good work Aaron. Now for some of the biggest environmental news this year, the Japanese whaling fleet has called it quits in the Southern Ocean, at least for this season. Captain Paul Watson and his crew on the Sea Shepard hounded those creeps till they hung up their harpoons & slithered back to Japan. Great work people. Check out the whole story in this month’s Mother Earth News. Leslie and I have been working day & night to get this issue to print so we can get our butts back up to the mountains. Hopefully you like what we have put together for ya. Check out the website www.revoltinstyle.com and sign up to win one of the Munitio Headphone packages we have available. These headphones are some of the best we have listened to & we want to share them with a few of you lucky Revolt In Style readers. I guess that’s about it for me. I’m gonna go take a nap & dream about that new snowboard. I hope leslie has her wood chopping outfit ready to go. Peace -B

THE SURFSIDE RULES Sushi with a twist. Fresh. Affordable. Amazing Everytime. It is a well known fact that The Surfside Sushi restaurant is home to some of our favorite people and favorite food in San Diego. With good reason. Aki is a master sushi chef with an amazing knack for creating absolute masterpieces on a plate. Not only are they a feast for the eyes, but an incredibly fresh feast for a discerning sushi palate as well. If you want to experience something truely one of the many exceptional dishes at The Surfside unique, order the ‘Trust Me’ nightly special and allow Aki to create whatever he wants for you. You won’t be dissapointed. His passion for his craft is apparent in everything that he creates. His unmatched knowledge of essential ingredients and a meticulous eye for detail and presentation make this sushi chef ‘One of legend’. The talent doesn’t end there: Masa and Taki are also talented sushi chefs, all combined, they are a force to be reckoned with. The friendly waitresses are most excellent, never making you wait unneccesarily for a seat, or for your order. To sit at the bar and be regaled with their personalized service & expert creations is one of our favorite dining experiences. Add a Caraf of high end chilled sake or an ice cold Asahi beer and you have found nirvana. If you started reading this article expecting ‘rules’ for a sushi bar, then put this publication down and whack your head against the nearest hard surface. There are no rules at the Surfside, just awesome food & great service. What I mean to say is...The Surfside RULES! If you have not had the opportunity to check out this great little restaurant, then by all means, do so immediately. Tell Aki “Revolt In Style sent ya!”
hat’s music to Corporate Sous Chef, Cassandra “Cassie” Marquez’s ears. It’s her passion for pastries that’s been her success at the Fleetwood & Beachwood restaurants, inventing some of the most mouth watering, and delectable deserts that this fine city has to offer. Creating her culinary confections under the tutelage of mentor, Executive Chef Mark Bolton, Cassandra’s dream has now become her reality. I sat down with Cassie to find out more about where this passion comes from. RIS: Who or what inspired you to become a chef? CSCC: That’s a really interesting question. It started when I was four. I use to cook with both my mom and dad. But, my mom and I had this special treat we’d do together. We’d make Devil’s Food cake. It didn’t matter if it came out of a box, we just both like to eat it, without frosting. We’d even eat it for breakfast sometimes. So that’s when my love for baking started. I’ll have to say my parents were my inspiration. RIS: Where did you train? CSCC: Well, I’ve practiced a lot on all my friends and family through-out the years. When my husband and I decided to move to San Diego we wanted to go to the same school. He was enrolled in the Arts Institute, so I checked out the Culinary Arts program. I enrolled, and as it turned out, I was really good at it. RIS: What do you specialize in? CSCC: I would have to say, deserts. The pastry menues for both restaurants are my recipes. RIS: What is your favorite desert that you prepare? CSCC: I’m known for my Cheesecakes. I have a Pumpkin Cheesecake that goes on
Sunsets are not the only spectacular items on the menu at the Beachwood
the menu every year. I’ve actually had people chase me down, just to find out when it’s coming out. This recipe was 4 years in the making, testing it on out my friends and family. RIS: Who’s your favorite Celebrity Chefs? CSCC: Probably, Anthony Bourdain, I love No Reservations, and I read all his books. Thomas Keller is another amazing chef. But, the one that I most idolize is Alice Waters. She started the movement up in Berkley, “From the Farm to the Table”. Her restaurant’s menu is created daily on what the local farmers have fresh for her that day. She also started the Edible Playground Program, where children grow their own gardens at school. They learn how to plant, grow, cook, and how to eat healthy. RIS: You should start that here. CSCC: I would love to do something like that. One of the lead line cooks at the Fleetwood is a Horticulture major and just brought me some Swiss Chard to grow, but I just found out I’m not very good at it. RIS: Well this was great; I have to say I love to see your eyes light up when you’re talking about cooking. Is there anyone you’d like to thank? CSCC: I would like to thank Mark Bolton, he’s my boss. He gave me a chance. I started at the Fleetwood doing prep for about 20 hrs a week. He noticed something in me, took me under his wing, and with a lot of really hard work, a lot of tenacity and attitude, they promoted me. I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without Mark. Oh, and also my husband Dylan Marquez for being my support system, and my food test dummy. Interview by Leslie Krouse Photo by Aaron Goulding

MOTHER EARTH NEWS VICTORY FOR THE WHALES VSO DAY - Victory in the Southern Ocean Day for the Whales
I
t’s official – the Japanese whaling fleet has called it quits in the Southern Ocean, at least for this season. And if they return next season, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will be ready to resume their efforts to obstruct and disable illegal Japanese whaling operations. “The Nisshin Maru made a significant course change immediately after the Japanese government made it official that the whaling fleet has been recalled,” said Captain Alex Cornelissen from the Bob Barker. “She looks like she’s going home!” The Sea Shepherd ship Bob Barker has been tailing the Japanese Nisshin Maru factory ship since February 9th making it impossible for the whalers to continue their illegal whaling operations.
“I have a crew of 88 very happy people from 23 different nations including Japan and they are absolutely thrilled that the whalers are heading home and the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary is now indeed a real sanctuary,” said Captain Paul Watson. The Sea Shepherd ships Steve Irwin, Bob Barker, and Gojira will remain in the Southern Ocean to escort the Japanese ships northward. “We will not leave the whale sanctuary until the last whaling ship has departed,” said Gojira captain Locky MacLean. “This is a great victory for the whales,” said Captain Watson, “but we did not do this alone. Without the support of the people of Australia and New Zealand, we would not have been able to send voyages out for seven seasons from Australian and New Zealand ports. We are grateful to Senator Bob
Brown and the Australian Greens Party. We are very grateful to Mr. Bob Barker for giving us the ship that turned the tide in our efforts to force the Japanese fleet from these waters. We are grateful to all our onshore staff and volunteers, supporting members and ship crews. We are grateful to the Chilean Navy and the government of France for their support. It is a very happy day for people everywhere who love whales and our oceans.” It’s official – the killing of whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary is over for this season and the whalers did not even take 10% of their quota. Sea Shepherd estimates that over 900 whales have been saved this year. “It’s a great day for the whales,” said Sea Shepherd Chief Cook on the Steve Irwin Laura Dakin of Canberra, Australia, “and it’s a great day for humanity!”

SURFRIDER FOUNDATION CLAIMS VICTORY
I
n 2005, the Surfrider Foundation set an ambitious goal to attain 150 coastal victories by the end of 2010. On December 1st, the organization successfully achieved this milestone when the Obama administration announced that it would ban new offshore drilling in the continental United States for the next 7 years; capping a two-year effort by the Foundation to restore coastal protection lost in 2008.
the marine reserve at Tres Palmas, Puerto Rico; overturning a longtime surfing ban in Chicago; securing regulations and commitments from local municipalities to enhance water quality at Oregon’s Nye Beach; the establishment of a fee on single use plastic bags in Washington D.C.; and the renowned victory at Trestles, where the Surfrider Foundation and others worked to stop an environmentally damaging toll road project.
The Surfrider Foundation originally set the 150-victory goal as a way to measure success on the ground. Surfrider Foundation defines a coastal victory as an official decision made in favor of the coastal and ocean environment that results in a positive conservation outcome, improves coastal access, or both.
“Now more than ever, people want to know that their contributions, whether of money or time, are being well invested and that they are seeing a return,” says Moriarty. “This achievement is a powerful affirmation that the Surfrider Foundation is successfully meeting our mission of securing positive outcomes for our oceans, waves and beaches.”
“Achieving such a monumental goal is a true testament to our organization and the volunteers who have given up countless hours of their time to help protect our beaches and coastlines for the benefit of everyone, everywhere,” says Surfrider Foundation’s CEO Jim Moriarty.
As part of their 2011-13 Strategic Plan the Surfrider Foundation is now challenging itself to grow their number of victories by 10% annually.
Included in the list of 150 victories are milestone wins such as the establishment of

Each Issue Wahoo’s Fish Tacos and Revolt In Style will recognize an exceptional local athlete for his or her outstanding talent. This month we honor Sterling Weatherley. Sterling has been a highly visible local rider that understands what it means to earn his own name. The younger brother of professional surfers Jason & Benji Weatherley, he shows that he can hold his own in the water by charging hard in any condition. He has made a name for himself by competing in local Pro Am competitions as well, including the Revolt Summer Surf Series. Sterling scores himself a $50 gift certificate from Wahoo’s Fish Tacos for his hard work. Congrats.

Interview by Brady Ruysschaert & Aaron Goulding Photography by Aaron Goulding BR: What’s up Sterling? You’re known around SD as a local everywhere, how do you obtain that? SW: I don’t really consider myself a local anywhere I just surf where ever looks good and has the least amount of people in the water, whether that spot’s in Mission or up to La Jolla. BR: You’ve been a sponsored surfer your whole life, do you plan on staying in the industry for a while? SW: Sponsors are great but I’m not trying to force anything. If somehow I get lucky and get to make a living in the surf industry, then great! If not, no worries. BR: Having older brothers who are well know professional surfers, do you try to follow in their foot steps or do you want to do your own thing? SW: Having Benji and Jason as older brothers is great. I admire their careers that they have built over the years, and I would like to do the same. BR: So I’ve heard that you’re a stuntman. What’s that all about? SW: I wouldn’t quite call me a stuntman, but when I was younger I used to do a sport called vaulting. It’s when you ride a horse and do gymnastic type tricks on top of it. Ha-ha kind of strange.
BR: Are you going to do any contests this season? SW. I’ll probably do some local contests like the REVOLT SUMMER SURF SERIES!! BR: Would you like to give props to anyone? SW: Yeah! I would like to thank my sponsors: Analog Clothing, Nation Surfboards, and Pacific Drive Surfshop BR: Last question, where do you see yourself in the next ten years? SW: World domination! Ha-ha! AG: Wait! I have some serious ones! Gel, hairspray or nothing? SW: I keep my hair pretty short, so nothing. AG: Vans, Etnies or Converse? SW: Cons AG: If you could only choose these 3 places, where would you take your date? Taco Bell, McDonalds, or Jack in The box? SW: Micky D’s AG: Politics, Religion or War? SW: Religion AG: You are stuck on a Mountain… SW: Snowboard all day. AG: …UH? SW What? AG: Do you have anything that you need to get off your chest? SW: Uh…no.

GROM ALERT!
10 questions with
BRADY RUYSSCHAERT Words & Photography By Aaron Goulding
RIS: Brady, at age 14 where do you find time to surf and compete while doing well in school? BR: I try to surf everyday after school, if I’m not out there I’m at my moms house studying or chilling with my little brother Colton (who is an amazing fisherman) as well as my stepdad, or with my other brother Jake (who is really good at football). Balancing school and contests is easy, school is on the week days and contests are on the weekends. RIS: I understand you are ranked 3rd in the NSSA. That’s quite an accomplishment. What do you do to train for such events? BR: I’m not 3rd anymore I dropped a couple spots. NSSA Open and Explorers is hard but it’s all about surfing well and showing people that your here for a reason. I am still doing really well right now. My training is just surfing everyday and pushing myself with my friends who rip. We push each other to the limits! RIS: What type of music pumps you up before a session and what song really does it for you? BR: I like all types of music, except for country. But, if I want to get pumped up I would listen to Social D, Adolescents, Lil Wayne, or The Game RIS: And when you are all done surfing what does your stomach crave? BR: Mexican food! If I don’t have a burrito or something Mexican, I don’t know what I would do. It’s a life essential, without it I would die. RIS: Who do you idolize in the surfing world and what is it about them that makes you want to be as good as them or better? BR: I really like Paul Fisher because he’s funny and he rips. RIS: Okay so the tsunami alarms go off and you have to choose a board to take with you to escape this giant wave or maybe even ride it out. What board do you choose? BR: I would choose my boogie board. That thing’s legendary in big waves like the womp. RIS: What is your ideal surf destination and who would you want with you on that trip? BR: Indo with all the boys ripping all day. SURF, EAT ,SLEEP, SURF!
20 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
RIS: I noticed from the last issue of Revolt In Style, that you like to write. Who inspired you to want to be a writer? BR: That’s one thing a lot of people don’t know about me. I like to write because you can express your mind in ways that only you can describe. Plus you can show your imagination. Being able to write in Revolt In Style magazine is really cool because now people can see one of my interests and I can share my thoughts. RIS: Do you have anyone that you are thankful for? BR: I’m thankful for God and my family, always giving me support. And I wish I could say I thanks to my sponsors or big companies, but I don’t have any. So thanks Brit and the guys at Bubblegum! Also Revolt, for letting me write and everyone who has helped me be successful up to this point in my life. RIS: Is there anything that you’d like to add? BR: RIP A.I....Shout out to all my friends! Any sponsors looking for riders, I’m in need as well as the boys in La Jolla. ha-ha! RIS: You are a very talented young surfer and we hope to see more of you in the future. Thanks for your time! BR: Thanks alot Revolt In Style Magazine!

JOHN
“Surf to live, live to surf!” RIS: When did you start surfing and what was it that inspired you to become a long boarder? JH: I have been surfing for forty years. I started in 1970 where I was inspired by Skip Frye and Joe Roper. As I got more involved with the lifestyle, people like Phil Edwards, Mickey Dora, and Gerry Lopez confirmed my passion for surfing. RIS: -You strike me as a very soulful surfer, please describe your inner self and how you see surfing and your place in the sport. JH: Roots, old school and under the radar. RIS: You know everyone wants to know…how long have you been growing your dreads and what/who influenced you to grow dreads? JH: 20 years! I was inspired by the life of a true Nazarite, living with peace, love and respect for all mankind. -Rastafari LoveRIS: What type of board do you like to ride? JH: I like single fins, 10 ft plus logs and guns. Anything from the 60’s and 70’s.
22 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
RIS: Last but not least, I know you have had many supporters, and perhaps non-supporters throughout the years, do you have anything to say to them? JH: All my love to my parents for giving me life to surf. And thanks to my siblings for all their support as well. Respect to the fullness to Joel Tudor and his family for their friendship and support. RIS: Final words? JH: Surf to live, live to surf!
Joel Tudor On John Haffey
RIS: How long have you known John Haffey? JT: I first spotted him when I was 14. John and the guys he surfed with were not always friendly back in the 80’s. They were a tough group to crack. I had to earn their respect. John, Rolf and Suddon were known as the spokespersons of ‘who gives a fuck about professional surfing?’ RIS: Knowing John as long as you have, how has he influenced you? JT: He’s like a spiritual guidance. He lives the less is more lifestyle and I admire and respect that. He does surfing a service because he doesn’t realize what he is doing.
It’s a purist form to him. John is a San Diego icon and he is still psyched to catch a two foot wave. RIS: John is definitely a staple in La Jolla with his clean style and flowing dread locks. He also is a very simple man. With no cell phone or internet how do you and John manage to stay in touch? JT: I know his hours of operations and we chat when the sun goes down. We connect when there’s surf whether it’s here in San Diego or further north in Malibu. RIS:John is not a very aggressive surfer. Tell me why that’s good and why that might not be so good. JT: His aggressive days were the days when surfing still allowed it. Nowadays it’s toned down with all the lawsuits. And now he has no ego. The only way I could get in with John Haffey was to give him a ride home when his car broke down one time. I think that broke the ice between us. RIS: One word from you that describes John Haffey. JT: Rastafarian. Because he lives the true lifestyle of a Rastafarian.

MG: I’d be stoned to death by now. ha-ha. Or one beat up kid. RIS: What if Bush was still president? MG: That’s a question that shouldn’t need any explanation. But if he were, we would probably be taken over and held captive already. RIS: What if you could never die? MG: I would live everyday as if it were still my last appreciating everything and everyone and guaranteed I’d be one pimp Grandpa. RIS: What if there was no such thing as fins? MG: Every one of the boys in HB wouldn’t be able to surf. RIS: What if you had a million dollars? MG: Just like the South Park episode, I’d buy Cartman world. My very own theme park but no one is allowed in but me. That means NO LINES!

“Nine times out of ten, my customers come back. It’s not my ego talking. It’s just that my boards work.”
COUNTRY SHAPER? Words & Photography By Aaron Goulding
When I think of a little town called Julian, my very first thought is…oooohh, Apple Pie. This little town is 60 miles northeast of San Diego and is a definite mountain town. Julian is famous for their baked goods and even some Julian Hard Cider, but surfing definitely has never crossed my mind, until I met Dennis Murphy, Professional Surfboard Shaper. Why Julian? Dennis grew up in San Diego surfing the winters while spending his summers on the farm in Iowa helping his uncle. Several years ago, he and his wife took a drive through the countryside here one day and noticed a “For Sale” sign. They fell in love with the area and made a purchase. Dennis appreciates the fresh air and four seasons that Julian has to offer and he says it’s just an hour and ten minutes from the ocean. Dennis, now 60, has settled down in this quite little town, not only with his with his wife, but two house cats, four dogs, seven barn cats, three donkeys, dozens of chickens, a rooster, “Kipper” the race horse and acres of land. At first look you’d swear Dennis was a cowboy with his denim pants, boots, silver hair, and silver mustache and then you see the Mitch’s T-shirt and you know that this man’s a surfer at heart. And when you see the country tools around the property it just feels…oh…country. It’s not often you meet someone so kind and genuine. Dennis is just that and humble too. He has some amazing history in the surf industry and photos to prove it. “What I do is shape custom surfboards. That’s where I’ve made my mark.” said Dennis. Though he specializes in Longboards, with 40 plus years of shaping experience, he can shape any custom design you want. He can even build you a beautiful custom table. He uses Balsa, Redwood and Foam but he wants his neighbors to like him so he has his glassing done at Diamond Glassing. For the record, the glasswork is equally amazing to Dennis’s hand crafted designs. The boards he has standing around are beautiful! They are custom made and glassed to perfection. It doesn’t get much better. During my visit with Dennis, he recalls one of his idols Gerry Lopez and working with some of the greats. About 40 years ago while shaping for G&S, he was influenced by the likes of Dick Brewer, and Mike Diffenderfer, but his greatest supporter was his brother Doug, a world-class surfer.

Winter is a tough time of the year for shapers. Dennis says he manages to survive by his regular clientele of 250 happy customers that keep coming back for more and odd jobs that he does for the state with his tractor gear. He admits the state of the economy doesn’t make it any easier. I got the full tour of the property and the shaping room located in the barn where I noticed a great photograph on the wall of a Redwood surfboard. It really drew me in for a closer look and I asked if he had made that. And he said ”Yes!” That’s a chambered Redwood Board.” It turns out that one of his neighbors, Kenny, disassembled an old water tank out at Cuyamaca that otherwise may have been burned up in the Cedar fire. The Redwood is clear heart from 1900 which his friend sells piece milled. “It’s very pricey but well worth it.” said Dennis. Redwood boards start out weighing about 90 lbs but after it is delicately chambered, it weighs about 45lbs. It takes up to 100 hours to build a board like that and sells anywhere from $7500 to $10,000. Over the years Murphy Surfboards has had the honor of shaping boards for many pro surfers including Tom English, Mike Emerson (Swami’s Surfing Association), Ron Greene (Slide Magazine) , Mark Etchings (Longboard Magazine), Eric Sommer, Mike Meyers, Sean Haggar (Hobie). Currently, Murphy Surfboards sponsors JP Marengo and may soon be announcing the addition of a high profiled surfer to the Murphy Surfboards family. Dennis’ approach with his team is that all boards are on loan. And he encourages his team riders to let people try the boards. And with that in mind, if you try it and you like it, then you will buy it. So if you see JP out one day surfing the Shores of La Jolla ask to try the board. Believe me. You will like it! Dennis is working on more projects, additions to his team, and ‘announcements’, but wants to keep it hush-hush at the moment. He is very thankful for his loyal customers. “Nine times out of ten, my customers come back. It’s not my ego talking. It’s just that my boards work. I’m proud of the rideability of my boards. They are all tried and tested.” You can find Murphy Surfboards at PB Surf Shop in Pacific Beach, Mitch’s in Solana Beach, and Central Coast at Good Clean Fun in Cayucos. Dennis can shape Redwood, Balsa and Foam. His Foam of choice is Polyurethane, US Blanks. Longboards start off at $715 for a polished 9.0 with 2 plus one that includes fins. For more detailed pricing and photos visit the website and for updates and team photos go to the blog. You can also order online. Dennis Murphy is very grateful for Chris Miller’s help with the blog and handling orders and deliveries. “You can find Chris Miller in the water at Del Mar haunting some of the secret spots. If you find him, talk to him about a new stick for your quiver.” Murphysurfboards.com Murphysurfboards.blogspot.com
GIRL POWER “Sometimes you have to really show that you want it, especially when it’s crowded or the waves are firing.”
MONICA DELEON Words & Photography By Aaron Goulding
RIS: How long have you been surfing? MD: I’ve been surfing for almost ten years now. I got a late start though; started when I was 15, and haven’t looked back since. RIS: You ride very well! Being a female do you find that most male surfers write you off as a beginner or not very good at fist site? If so, how do you handle that? MD: Oh definitely. I feel that a lot of the time guys see you paddle out and they think you can’t surf at all, especially at more competitive or crowded breaks. So sometimes the super aggressive ones will think they can back-paddle you or drop in on you because they think you’re not going to make it. It’s incredibly annoying but it just fuels the fire even more to make me want to surf better. I handle it by, well definitely trying to NOT blow my first wave if I can help it, but also by staying committed when paddling for a good wave and not backing down if a guy even thinks to paddle battle me when it’s not his turn. Sometimes you have to really show that you want it, especially when it’s crowded or the waves are firing.
RIS: Are there any female surfers that you look up to? If not, then what male surfers inspire you? MD: There’s more and more girls ripping these days so there’s a lot to look up to and learn from. I really love the way Carissa Moore and Laura Enever surf. They both can throw sick turns like the boys do and they do it with style.
RIS: What is you favorite surf maneuver? MD: Nose rides and a clean cutback.
RIS: You are not just a female surfer but a very good looking female surfer. Does that help you get more waves or not so much? MD: Ha! Well, I wouldn’t say that, but I think that being a girl who can hold her own in the water definitely doesn’t hurt my wave count.
RIS: Where’s your favorite place to eat in San Diego? MD: The Goldfish.
RIS: Do you currently compete or have plans to? MD: I have been doing Coalition contests and they’re fun. I like to party.
RIS: Do you have any last words? MD: Buy a Murphy surfboard, and if it gets dinged take it to Joe Roper’s ding repair.
RIS: What are some of you favorite spots to surf and have you traveled outside of the country to surf? MD: Oh man, there’s soooo many favorite spots, I’m all over the county burning gas. I’ll be anywhere from Sunset Cliffs area to La Jolla to Cardiff and Swamis, and I love Lowers, along with the rest of the surfing population. As far as surf travel, the last trip I took was down to Mainland Mexico for 3 months. We drove down from Santa Cruz, CA and cut through Arizona, surfed all the way down nearly to Guatemala; it was epic. I’d do it again in a heartbeat. RIS: I know you ride both a short board and a long board. Which do you prefer? MD: That’s a tough one, but for me I guess it really just depends on the wave conditions. I get just as stoked on a waist high, mellow longboard session as I do on a head-high rippable shortboard session. Of course I’d prefer the latter, but living in southern California where it’s more often mushy than it is head high, I’ve learned to appreciate the fine art of log riding. If I lived in Indo I would probably hate longboarding. But I don’t, so the short answer would be that it depends on the waves.

ORIGINAL G
TALES OF A SURFER Words and Photography by Bill Andrews a.k.a. “BA” Shorty
In April of 1969, we opened Pacific Beach Surf Shop for Gordon and Smith Surfboards, on the corner of Mission Blvd and Pacific Beach Drive. Even though I had been surfing in San Diego since the mid 1950’s this area was new to me, I surfed mainly between Black’s and Big Rock, and I made an occasional safari to South Mission. The local groms were stoked we were opening the shop, and the established Team Wall Surfers and I had shared waves at WindanSea and South Mission so there was a level of respect for each other. The most unique aspect of The Wall were the non-surfers who hung around at the foot of PB Drive. It was a collection of bikers, wannabe bikers, and the usual rats that followed whichever tribe would let them in. We stocked PB Surf Shop with all the latest surf stuff, and since we had an open pipeline to Gordon and Smith Surfboards, we were able to sell around ten new boards per day. The groms got deals, The Wall Surfers got deals, and yet I hadn’t cracked the wallets of the bikers and their band of derelicts. In general, there was an uneasy peace between my surf shop employees and the bikers - occasionally the thugs would attempt to extort booze money from my younger workers, and the head extortionist was a local rat, Shorty. Shorty was annoying at best, potentially dangerous at the worst when he was high on a combination of drugs and booze. Shorty was not a biker, but would have loved to have been one, and Shorty and I struck a deal of sorts - short lived [no pun intended] as it was. He became my merchandise sales rep to the bikers. I started purchasing leather bras, adorned with feathers and beads. We purchased used jeans from the local prisons - Shorty helped me pimp the bras and jeans to the bikers and the biker babes. It was always a bit unnerving to have Hells Angels or Mongols hanging around while their women, often topless, tried on the leathers - probably a good learning process for the groms? Eventually, Bahne skateboards and Cadillac Wheels replaced the bras, and Holo-Holos replaced the jeans, but Shorty was still hanging around way too much. After a few calls to the cops, Shorty finally stayed away from our shop, but he still remained a source of potential trouble.
26 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM
The years went by, the groms grew up, the Wall Surfers travelled on or opened shops of their own, the bikers were killing each other off - I moved on and Shorty was still a fixture at the end of the street. I was talking to Joe Roper about PB Surf Shop and Shorty a few days ago, and I began the conversation by spewing some venom about Shorty - and Joe said something to me which hit a cord. As much as I couldn’t stand Shorty and his behavior, as Joe said, he was a local rat, The Wall’s Rat - no different than “my” WindanSea Parking Lot Rats, or The Shores Rats, or any other surf spot where surfers and rats gather. Not that I look with much affection at “our” rats, but for better or worse, they are ours, just as Shorty was PB Drive’s very own rat.

“Scotty had a great score and I knew I would have to pull out all of the stops and show what I have been working on in practice,” said White of his second run. “It was one of the best runs that I have ever done.”
SHAUN WHITE
Wins His Fourth Consecutive Snowboard SuperPipe Gold 114,200 people attended Winter X Games 15 and they were witness to phenomenal athletes doing amazing feats. Among those feats, Shaun White’s second run in Men’s Snowboard SuperPipe. Trailing Scotty Lago after the first series of runs, White knew something big was needed if he was going to capture his fourth consecutive gold medal in the discipline. And big is what he did, pulling together a score of 97.33 on a run that included a backside air, front double cork 1080, cab double cork 1080, a front-side stale-fish 540, a double mctwist 1260 and an alley-oop backside rodeo. “Scotty had a great score and I knew I would have to pull out all of the stops and show what I have been working on in practice,” said White of his second run. “It was one of the best runs that I have ever done.” Not bad for a guy who was competing in his first Snowboard Pipe competition since the 2010 Winter Olympics. “Tonight was a great night,” added White. “I can’t describe the feeling. All the other riders were amazing and it forced me to do my absolute best. I am so happy to have another one of these gold medals around my neck.” The Snowboard SuperPipe competition is arguably one of the most exciting competitions in the world. The 587-foot long, 22-foot deep “U-shaped” SuperPipe is 75 feet from lip-to-lip with a pitch of 18 degrees. The worldclass pipe allows for maximum amplitude and speed, giving the riders space to perfect progressive tricks.

“During my semifinal heat, I watched the whole run from behind Del Bosco, and I kind of planned out a couple spots that I might be able to pass him,” said Teller, “That was exactly what I was planning on doing, and it just happened. I was in autopilot; I wasn’t even thinking.”
JOHN TELLER
STRIKING GOLD WITH SKIER X Interview by Patrick Bernard
Half of a ski. That is all that separated first and second in the Men’s Skier X final. That half-of-ski belonged to California’s John Teller, who knocked off defending champion Chris Del Bosco to capture the gold at the rescent X Games held Jan 27-30 in Aspen Colorado. He used a daring maneuver to pass defending Skier X champion Chris Del Bosco and win a surprise gold medal by half a ski length. In doing so, Teller made sure one of the Winter X Games’ strangest streaks lived a 14th year: no man has ever repeated as Skier X champion. A fusion of motocross and downhill racing, Skier X represents one of the most demanding competitions in ski racing today with skiers racing over tabletop jumps, banked turns, rollers and gaps.- In the 2010 Winter Olympics, Skiercross was the only new sport to be added. It’s been a very good year so far, for the part-time car mechanic from Mammoth Mountain. In Early January John Teller became the first American to win a World Cup ski cross race. Late January saw him strike Gold at the X Games. Revolt In Style caught up with the current # 1 Ranked US Skiercross racer: RIS: So, Where were you born and where do you live now? JT: I was born and raised in Mammoth Lakes, Ca. and still live there, it is the best mountain on the planet! RIS: As far as I know Skiercross aka Skier X is a relatively new sport most recently debuting at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. What got you into it and how long have you been racing professionally? JT: I raced the traditional alpine ski racing for most of my life. I stopped racing for 2 years and then was talked into trying ski cross out by a couple of friends I fell in love instantly. My second race ever I won $1,000. That was a nice bonus for skiing on a weekend. I was asked to come and ski with the first U.S. Skier cross team the next year, that was the 07, 08 season. I was invited to ski with them shortly after on the world cup circuit. I have been competing internationally ever since RIS: What are some long term goals and what events do you plan on competing in for the 2010-2011 season? JT: I would like to be ranked in the top 10 internationally or better by the end of this year, and I am planning on making the 2014 Olympics in Russia. I would love to make the podium in the X games this winter. I was invited to X games after making the finals last year. I should be racing the entire World cup year and have been invited to the Red Bull Hutten Ralley in St. Anton Austria. World championships are in Deer Valley, Utah this year and that will be the only World cup event in the U.S RIS: So Its got to get a little crazy racing down the hill, any fights or anything wild ever happen during the race or when its over? JT: All of the skiers are pretty good about leaving everything on the hill but things can get heated some times. The racing is nasty enough everyone is pretty happy when you make it down without any casualties! RIS: What race offers the biggest prize money and where is it? JT: X-Games is the biggest pay day. 25,000 dollars was what first place took last year. RIS: You are currently the #1 ranked US Skier X racer and were very close to making the 2010 Olympic team, who are the other top Americans and internationals that you compete with? JT: Biche Rudigoz and Pat Durran are the other athletes on the U.S. Team. There are so many other competitors on the circuit and they all can be a threat and can do well at any time. It is definitely a hostel environment. RIS: John Can you tell us a little about the World Cup win, and you’re current World Ranking? JT: The win in Austria was amazing. It meant a lot to me because no other American has ever won. It was a night race and there was 7000 people there watching. I had that track dialed. There was another world cup at the same time as X Games so currently I am ranked 9th right now. RIS: The X Games were insane. Its was a demanding course, the Quarters and Semis were tough and you beat two great racers Chris Del Bosco and Casey Pucket to win the gold, How did you get it done? JT: X was awesome. I had a rough time in the first race and was in 4th at one point and had to pass to make it through. I had made a mistake so I was pissed for the rest of the races. The semi, I tried to sit back and watch Del for some passing opportunities. I had a good idea what I needed to do and the plan came together in the final. I also just placed 5th at the world champs in Deer Valley as well, so that was a good accomplishment. Questions, Comments or Ideas email Patrick@revoltsd.com

“That is the biggest one I have ever done,” said Bodin of the double grab backflip that scored 96.00. “I have done it before, but I have never landed it on snow. I just had to do it”
DANIEL BODIN Steps Up For An Injured Levi Lavallee Photo by Gabriel Christus
Freestyle rider, Daniel Bodin was added to Team LaVallee’s roster for this years Games. Bodin competed in Freestyle, Speed & Style and Best Trick. On Thursday, Bodin started the weekend off with a bang receiving his first gold medal in Freestyle. He finished 4th in Speed & Style and to add to his first gold medal, he finished the weekend off with striking gold again in Best Trick. Bodin rode strong all weekend but what earned him his two gold medals were his consistent runs, full extensions, and pulling of a Double Grap Backflip in the Best Trick Final, a trick that had never been seen before on a snowmobile. The double grab backflip saw Bodin race off the ramp and into a backflip. As he rotates in the air, Bodin let go of the handle bars and grabbed on to the back of his seat. As the 500-pound snowmobile rotated out of the flip, Bodin let go of the seat and grabbed back on to the handle bars as the machine landed smoothly on the ground. With Levi LaVallee on the road to recovery one would think his schedule would be pretty low-key, however, it was anything but that. LaVallee received the honor of announcing both the Freestyle final and Best Trick final, followed by multiple interviews and autograph sessions. LaVallee was still able to be very involved in Winter X 15.

A Snowboard For Surf Inspired Freeriding Review by Brian Terhorst Three days of riding at Mountain High and Big Bear gave us the opportunity to try out Burton’s Supermodel on various terrain and snow conditions. Groomed, ice, slush...not a lot of deep snow or powder. I think we have a classic freeride board here with some new age qualities that really stand out.
IMPERIAL
Twin flex means it’s perfectly symmetrical from tip to tail for a balanced ride that’s equally versatile regular or switch, frontside or backside. That works well for tight carves & deeper snow. Negative core profile means the board is slightly thicker under each foot - more flex at the tips and between your bindings - the flex really allows you to pump through carves and work those short radius turns. The Supermodel has a very narrow waist which means edge to edge response was incredibly fast. Supermodel also boasts some thing called ‘Lightning bolts’ which are carbon reinforcements that run from edge to edge. This adds to quick edge response as well. Lastly the Camber allows for maximum edge control from tip to tail. By the way...the channel system rocks! The channel system allows on-the-fly stance/width/angle adjustments. They also allow the board to fully flex all the way through by getting rid of the dead-spot under your feet where the inserts would be. It’s pretty damn cool and gives you near limitless stance options. Not all bindings work with the Burton Channel System, so you have to make sure you are buying the right ones. I paired the Supermodel with Burton’s midrange Mission EST cant bindings & together the package was extremely light.

VERDICT
The Supermodel is an intermediate freeride board. I found the board was stable and provided a great hold on the groomers and packed powder. The board we tested was 161cm in length. Probably not the best choice for a smaller rider looking for flat out speed runs & park riding like our test pilot Michael. He rode it hard & put it thru it’s paces, but wanted a smaller size. He did like the channel system. I (on the other hand) found it perfect for a bigger boarder, looking for some smooth, controlled, yet fast-as-hell riding. I thouroughly enjoyed my time on this board. I can’t wait to ride it on some fresh snow. Out of a possible 5 - I give the Supermodel a 4.5 Model: Supermodel Year: 2011 Available Lengths (cm): 155, 158, 161, 164, 168 Riding Style: Freeride

The Burton Imperial is new for 2011. Not only a great looking boot but a perfectly functioning boot as well. It may take a day to get them properly molded to your foot, but once they’re dialed in...absolute bliss! The moderate flex delivers the support you need for fast turnin’ & burnin’. One thing about Burton boots is they are quite possibly the most comfortable boots out there. For most of us comfort can sometimes beat performance. We found the Imperial boot posseses both qualities. Not only does it feel great but it performs like you expect from Burton. We can gladly award the Imperial a four out of five. HIGHLIGHTS • Speed Zone lacing tightens upper and lower zones with the yank of a cord for a custom fit that works. • Vibram Outsole provides ultimate grip on ice & snow • New Rad Pad cushions instep from liner lace pressure • Shrinkage technology reduces the boot’s footprint for less bulk and improved binding fit • Aegis antimicrobial treatment deters dem funky odors

BOBBY GEORGE MAMMOTH LEGEND
Interview By Gabe Taylor Photography by Josh Gunter
What makes a legend? Is it ones legendary accomplishments that dictate the title, or is it something else? It’s just that, when I refer to Bobby George as being a Mammoth legend, I want to make sure the term is doing the man justice. Bobby has been snowboarding Mammoth for a decade and a half and still rides as hard as he did when he moved here. When did you move to Mammoth? 94/95. The mountain opened October 10th that year and closed sometime in August. We got three feet in June and I kept thinking, ”This is the best place on earth.” Who were some of your earliest influences in town? Jeff Anderson, of course. He was a pro, insane. Joe Wineger. Dan Brown. What made snowboarding special to you? I could do tricks I always dreamed about skateboarding on a snowboard. All my friends that I grew up with skating quit and started snowboarding so that kind of helped the transition. Bobby grew up in Palmdale, CA trying to progress his skateboarding day by day. With a few good results in some contests and footage popping up in some legit videos Bob decided to take his skate style to the snow and move up to Mammoth. Are you influenced more by skateboarding or snowboarding?
I like watching skateboarding more, I’m more impressed by skateboarding, I think I’m better at snowboarding but to an average joe I guess skateboarding. I really look up to skaters and have since day one. Snowboard style doesn’t really impress me but skaters are tough, more core you know? It seems like there’s a lot of snowboarders that are in it for the glory, they just want to be pro.
Have you ever claimed a trick? Fist pump? Arms straight up in glory? Shooter McGavin pistol firing? Be honest. I honestly can’t think of anything. But I’ve definitely done the opposite. I freaked out yelling at a jump in Hood after it took me fifteen times to land the damn trick. In my eyes I’ve never really done anything worthy of claiming.
It seems like every couple years the scene in Mammoth recycles itself and new crews replace the old. Bobby has seen his fair share of change in Mammoth and the fact that he is still as relevant as ever speaks volumes.
With his wife Jolene at his side, Bobby continues to march forward and do what he does well, ride Mammoth Mt. like a bat out of hell. If you’re in Mammoth and happen to ride chair 6 take a look around and keep a lookout for the man in these photos, the legendary Bobby George.
What are some of your fondest memories of Mammoth over the past 15 years? When Josh Chauvet first moved to Mammoth and started working the park(2001) it changed everything for me. The jumps got so big and really changed snowboarding for me. Do you miss anything? I miss the Grenade crew, when they first moved out here it was so much fun. They just moved out and were hard core snowboarders, Lane, Kyle, Colin, Kramer, all those guys. Today Bobby rode the park as hard as kids half his age and guess where he’ll be tomorrow? Shredding Mammoth just as hard. It’s this day in day out steadfastness that has given Bob the title as the “Mayor of Main Park”. An aptly given title considering just how many years the man has been hitting the big jumps of Main Park Mammoth. Which title do you like better, “Mayor of Main Park” or “Big Jump Bob”? I have been riding Main Park for a long time so I guess that name fits me better. I’ve been riding that run so long and I feel like I really have a feel for it. But it’s not a name I’d ever give myself, I don’t even know where that name came from.

WANNA RIDE WITH LOUIE VITO? Well here’s your chance. Text TEAM to 99158 and you could win a day on the mountain with Mountain High Team rider, Olympian X Games medalist and alll around professional snowboarding badass Louie Vito, March 27th. Mountain High is home to not one, but three distinguished resorts. Even though they are only a mile apart, they offer stunning differences in both terrain and atmosphere. John McColly the Vice President of Sales and Marketing sat down with us to go over some of the newest additions and highlights for 2011. Probably the biggest thing this year is the terrain park at East or ‘The ‘Beast’. “The new Gold Rush Terrain Park at East boasts the longest trails in Southern California serviced by a single high-speed quad. 1.6 miles long makes it the longest run in southern california.” He added. “There are excellent jumps & jibs top to bottom. It’s probablymy favorite resort up here.” Still under construction it will eventually be one of the best parks around. Rising as high as 8,200 feet, the East Resort offers traditional skiers and snowboarders a true alpine experience without having to journey far from home. The West Resort is the busiest of the three. Filled with a seemingly endless assortment of technical trails and skillfully-designed terrain features for progressive riders and skiers of all skill levels. It is the most youthful of the three areas and the site of many on-hill contests, promotions and live performances. It is also Southern California’s only local resort open seven nights a week. Mountain High’s new North Resort offers 70 acres of beginner terrain perfect for families and introductory skiers. No matter where you start, your single Mountain High ticket is good at all places and traveling from resort to resort is easy with our free shuttle service. Shuttles load in front of the ticket windows every five to ten minutes, seven days a week. Directions from San Diego Though it may not appear so on the map, Mountain High is San Diego’s closest winter resort by more than 30 minutes. Take Interstate 15 North and exit Highway 138 West. Make a left on Highway 2 and go three miles past the town of Wrightwood. Travel time from San Diego is 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Mt Baldy Ski Area is popular with experienced skiers and boarders, who enjoy the challenge provided by the resort’s steep runs. When the snow is right, it compares favorable to some of the smaller Lake Tahoe resorts like Donner Ski Ranch or Diamond Peak. Tickets to Mt Baldy Ski Resort are about $50 a day. Because many people head further into the Sierra Nevada, Mt Baldy Ski Area is not as crowded as one might expect. Directions from San Diego Once on Mt Baldy Rd. follow the road for about 7 miles to the Village and another 3 miles up to Ski lifts. The road will end at the ski area parking lot and parking is free for our customers. At Mt Baldy the ticket office and rest rooms are the only facilities at the parking lot level. You will ride the first chair to the main part of the ski area, where you will find the rental equipment, lessons, rest rooms, restaurant, basket check, first aid, tubing park and the beginner, intermediate and advanced skiing. PALA PUTS SAFETY FIRST New One-Of-A-Kind FMX Practice Facility Now Open
The tragic death of freestyle motocross star and San Diego native Jeremy Lusk served as the inspiration for the grand opening of a one-of-a-kind freestyle motocross practice facility, which emphasizes safety and opened to the public on Saturday at the Pala Raceway. Designed by the General himself, Brain Deegan the facility features include a foam pit, wall ride and several ramp to dirt jumps. This comes after many months of pushing forward with the mission of the AFMXA to promote growth in the sport and increase safety. Brian said “I’m really excited to help organize and build this sport to the levels these athletes deserve. We have a great team working together in the AFMXA and it’s for all riders so sign up and come ride the jump park!” The American Freestyle Motocross Association (AFMXA) helped organize the opening of the facility. The organization’s services include access to medical professionals in emergencies as well as a hotline for members in competitions where they believe that conditions are unsafe. Emergency medical jetting around the world is available, and on-site emergency medical assistance will be available at Pala any time the track is in use. When the former Metal Mulisha rider and two-time X Games medalist died after attempting a jump last February in Costa Rica, it sent shockwaves through the freestyle motocross community. “After the accident, I felt I had to do something,” said Deegan “This just organizes it and keeps it safer.” AFMXA membership is granted to amateurs who gain clearance and includes use of the facility and its safety training. That includes use of the foam pit for practice jumps, as well as programs and services that help with rider training and medical education training. For more info go to www.palaraceway.com

THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING By Nicholas Armitage Photo by William Metivet
JIU JITSU
XANDE RIBEIRO
T
he Sport of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Promoted by powerhouse organizations like the UFC, it has an incredible future. But with all the present excitement, many fans forget about the origins of the sport. And those origins lie deeply within the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, championed for decades by the Kings of Jiu jitsu, the Gracie family. Helio Gracie, along with his brother Carlos, were the first Brazilians to bring this incredible martial art to the public. Helio Gracie went on to father 7 sons, one of whom was Royce, the first Gracie to represent the family’s honor in the UFC. Royce is perhaps the best known Gracie because of his involvement with the UFC, but there are other brothers within the family better known for their Jiu Jitsu. One brother in particular is Royler Gracie.
“For a martial artist like Xande, the journey truly matters far more than the destination” Royler was the first man on the planet to win 4 World Championships in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Teaching and fighting out Gracie Humaitá, the same academy his father Helio taught from for decades, Royler ruled the Jiu Jitsu world for years. But as with all Kings, there’s always someone waiting to take the throne. And the next in line was Saulo Ribeiro, Royler’s protégé. Saulo was the first athlete to surpass Royler in number of World Jiu Jitsu Championships. He won 5 of them, across 4 different weight classes, something never done before or since. Saulo was and still is a Colossus of the sport, one whose feats will remain legendary. But as with Royler, time marches on for all men and Saulo had to eventually make way for two new warriors who would beat his overall medal count. One is Roger Gracie, greatnephew to Helio and 2nd cousin to Royler. He is the man most responsible for championing the Gracie cause in recent times. The other is Alexandre. “Xande (pronounced Shawn-G)” Ribeiro, younger brother to Saulo and nemesis to Roger Gracie. Xande (pronounced Shawn-G) Ribeiro
Like an epic tale from Greek mythology, Xande and Roger have battled each other across the years, striving mightily to see who could outmatch the other. It is one of sports’ greatest pairings, akin to Ali and Frazier or Leonard and Duran. The two martial artists share a long history, contesting with one another seven times, starting with their first battle in 2003. All the while, Xande has played David to Roger’s Goliath, giving up almost a half a foot in height. But they have only fought each other twice to determine who would win the right to wear the crown of Absolute World Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Champion, the greatest honor in the sport. Both times, once in 2006 and again in 2008, Xande has walked away victorious, leaving Roger bowing his head in defeat. Those wins earned Xande universal accolades as King of the Jiu Jitsu world and firmly cemented him in the annals of history as one of the greatest grapplers ever to walk the planet. But sport, especially a combat sport such as Jiu Jitsu, can be a cruel mistress. Like his mentors Royler Gracie and brother Saulo Ribeiro before him, Xande is warring against the most unstoppable opponent of all, the slow creeping of time. At the age of 30, Xande is still a relatively young man, in the prime of his life. He has all the talent and experience in the world to do what he’s done twice in the past; win the Absolute World Championship. But to achieve this, he must once again don his uniform and prepare himself for battle. He will need to train multiple times a day, hardening his body to stone. He must also hone his mind to be as sharp as the edge of a Japanese katana, instantly ready to seize the opportunity for victory when it presents itself. Because eagerly waiting for him are not only past foes like Roger, but also a fresh pack of hungry wolves seeking to claim their own place in history. Unlike these young samurai looking to surpass the master, whether this great warrior wins the Absolute title again this year or not is no longer the end game for Xande. It’s the art and practice of Jiu Jitsu he loves so much. For a martial artist like Xande, the journey truly matters far more than the destination. He likens himself to Jiu Jitsu founder Helio Gracie who passed away in 2009 at the age of 95. Helio practiced his beloved Jiu Jitsu every day until his death. Xande will most likely end his days the same way, sharing his knowledge and philosophy long after his battles in the arena are over. But in the meantime, the fans still wonder. Can this legend make it to the top of the dais one more time? Does he still have the heart, the will, the desire? Can he master his destiny and rise again to inspired heights to take back what’s his and yet again be crowned King? Only Xande himself knows. Meanwhile, the Jiu Jitsu world waits. ROCK N ROLL
ZAKK WYLDE
FROM THE PEAKS OF VALHALLA WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC HENDRIKX
W
hen Odin, Norse god and ruler of Asgard, sent one man from the highest peaks of Valhalla to deliver a sonic message to all mankind that would restore order across the globe, he didn’t choose his son Thor. Instead he sent Zakk Wylde, the twenty-five year veteran of the Ozzy Osbourne band and frontman of Black Label Society. And when this battle ready Berzerker sought to construct a metal-frenzied legion that would spread across the globe on a course of global domination, a family was created – the Black Label Society. “It’s much more than just a band,” says Wylde, who has dedicated his life to his passion for music and family, “it’s about family, unity, and mindset.” In the two decades since Ozzy Osbourne hired him away from his job at a New Jersey gas station, Zakk Wylde has established himself as a guitar icon known and revered the world over. Wylde has won nearly every guitar award imaginable and graced countless magazines’ covers and is a major influence to a new battalion of rock guitarists. Writing and recording with Osbourne led to multi-platinum success, inspiring him to create the now iconic Black Label Society in 1998. In the decade plus since, BLS has turned the notion of what a rock band should be upside down by inspiring legions of fans known as Berserkers, all over the world to follow the mantra Strength, Determination, Merciless, Forever (SDMF for short). Wylde and his Berzerkers have established a heavy metal institution true to the vision of uncompromising, unfiltered and unrestrained rock ‘n’ roll. To date, Black Label Society has sold more than 3.5 million albums worldwide and continues to be a massive presence on the worldwide touring and merchandising circuits. Their latest album, ORDER OF THE BLACK was released in August 2010 and debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart.

CHECK IN. ROCK OUT.
On February 4, 2010 Zakk Wylde stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego to promote the launch of their partnership with Gibson Guitars for the Check In, Rock Out. “I think it’s awesome,” said Wylde, “Anyone staying at the Hard Rock Hotel can borrow a Gibson guitar, headphones and an amp for free. You can’t beat that.” Wylde dedicated A Zakk Wylde Les Paul Bullseye guitar to the Hard Rock’s renowned memorabilia collection, as well as helping to unveil 14 high-end guitars that will be available to guests as part of the “Check In. Rock Out.” program, a collaboration between Hard Rock Hotels and Casinos and Gibson. With the program, hotel guests can take the guitars back to their room and jam out at no cost, and the Pocket Pod Amp and highdefinition headphones that are included enable them to rock out until their hearts’ content without disturbing neighboring hotel guests. Wylde gave an impromptu speech to an entourage of media and Black Label Society fans who came to watch him stroll Hard Rock’s infamous black carpet and commit one of his axes into one of the world’s greatest rock memorabilia collections.
THE BLACK VATICAN
Instead of recording his eighth album at another studio on the road, Wylde decided to build his own studio atop his own Valhalla home above Los Angeles. The Black Vatican, as it came to be known, features a complete recording studio, kitchen, lounge and bathroom, the latter of which was designed in tribute to the 1973 film The Exorcist. “The bathroom will literally scare the shit out of you, no laxatives required around here,” Wylde laughs, “Although it backfires on me sometimes. Like when my eight-year-old goes to the bathroom in there, he covers his eyes and ends up pissing all over the place.”
STARSHIP ENTERPRISE VISITS THE BLACK VATICAN
“Star Trek” icon William Shatner paid a visit to the Black Vatican, Zakk Wylde’s recording studio to collaborate on a song for William Shatner’s forthcoming record. Seeking Major Tom is a compilation of his favorite rock songs where Shatner and friends have recomposed songs including a cover of Black Sabbath’s ‘Iron Man’ that they recorded together. “Zakk is one of the great guitarists who played with Ozzy Osbourne. A master playing a cover of Iron Man. He’s fantastic! I’m energized,” exclaimed Shatner. continued on pg. 46

Bringing Metal to the Children On September 13, 2011 HarperCollins will release the handbook to all things heavy metal: Bringing Metal to the Children by Zakk Wylde and Eric Hendrikx. Inspired by his encounters with the Viking god Odin, Wylde assembles legions of Berzerkers worldwide for tales of glory, debauchery, and mayhem. In Bringing Metal to the Children, Zakk Wylde, the man who turned heavy metal touring into a journey of fantastical excess, shares what really goes on behind tour bus windows, backstage doors, and in the recording studio. Beginning with his very first gig, Wylde details his epic ride through the music business, offering both sound and not-sosound advice to young Metal Loki everywhere. The book chronicles many riotous stories from the road with many of heavy metal’s gods including; Ozzy Osbourne, Eddie Van Halen, and Dimebag Darrell, as well as testosterone-fueled appearances by professional wrestlers Chris Jericho, Bubba Dudley and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Kopek - White Collar Lies
CD reviews by Leslie Krouse
Genre – Modern Rock
Kopek’s White Collar Lies album is a bracing dose of heartfelt and expertly performed modern rock. Daniel Jordan’s voice rips through the speakers, and combined with drummer Shane Cooney and bassist Brad Kinsella, this Dublin trio has made an album for the ages. From track to track they bring new elements, from bands like Oasis, Janes Addiction & The Rolling Stones. From Buckcherry and Nirvana, to their influences like Zeppelin and Hendrix. Now that’s diversity. The songs are catchy, well-written and with a fresh sound, laden with crawling beats, throaty vocals, smoldering riffs and impacting lyrics, it’s the kind of album you can’t help but to put it on replay, and cranked up! It’s good, very good, and for this being their debut album, it has been put out there that White Collar Lies, set to be released March 1st, could take the Best Rock Album of the Year. These guys are not your typical one dimensional band, but they bring the full package. Highlight tracks that stood out for me were “White Collar Lies”, which is a dead on jab at government corruption and abuse of power, “Love Is Dead”, “Bring It On Home”, and “Sub Human”, which makes clever use of an Aborigine instrument called a Didgeridoo.
Dropkick Murphy - Going Out In Style Genre - Kick Ass Fun
Based in Boston, the Irish punk rock band Dropkick Murphys will release their seventh studio album “Going Out In Style” on March 1st. The record starts with an energetic typical Dropkick Murphys styled tune “Hang ‘Em High.” The title song “Going Out In Style” reminded me of “Captain Kelly’s Kitchen” from the album “The Warrior’s Code” because of the way Barr and Casey alternate on main vocals. It’s an interesting listen, moment by moment since their voice qualities and singing styles are different. While Casey’s voice is uplifting, warm, and strong, Barr’s voice is aggressive (as we can see the veins and blood vessels on his neck when he performs live). Melodic track “Broken Hymns” is based on lightly rhythmical drum beats, which gives the listeners a whole new impression of the band. The unstoppably fun tune “Take ‘Em Down” focuses on the social consciousness and unwavering support for organized labor, but the song is filled with soulful excitement, despite the fact that they are singing, “Let them know, we gotta take our bastards down.” The song would possibly energize you before going to a stressful workplace a.k.a. ‘battlefield’ every morning. One of the record’s highlights is Bruce Springsteen’s guest vocals featured in the old standard tune “Peg O’ My Heart.” The collaboration makes the song refreshing and vigorous. The catchy tune is bright and fun, especially after the slow-moving comfortable song “1953,” which is built on a consistently solid bagpipe melody with unified vocal harmonies.
Rise Against - Endgame
NEW RELEASES
Genre – Alt Rock Rise Against finished recording their sixth studio album, Endgame, in January 2011, after they recorded some last minute guest vocals for the record. The lyrics of the album touch on real world events, such as Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. According to McIlrath, although the lyrics discuss grim topics, they actually take on a positive view and were written from the perspective of: “What if the place on the other side of this transition is a place we’d all rather be living in?” According to frontman Tim McIlwrath, inspiration for at least one song on Rise Against‘s new album came from a very strange place: The Dixie Chicks. The 31-year-old recently told Spin that the Chicks’ “Not Ready to Make Nice” – which addresses the response to negative comments singer Natalie Maines made about then-president George W. Bush – shows that a band that exists in the pop music realm can still be against popular opinion. “It goes without saying,” he said, “that our opinion will ruffle feathers.” Endgame, is due out March 15th via Universal and will probably go down a similar road. “We’re living under this black cloud of doom. Everything’s spiraling out of control,” said McIlwrath, “The record is all about that.” Longtime producers Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore – who have produced three of the band’s last five albums – are once again at the helm and while fans of the band’s “Swing Life Away” may not be too excited about the prospect of hearing a bunch of angry protest songs, McIlwrath has promises that a few songs venture into a “slower, more ballad-esque” sonic landscape. Maurice Ravel & Modest Mussorgsky Recomposed By Carl Craig & Moritz Von Oswald (2LP)
Double vinyl version, in deluxe gatefold sleeve. Surprising and impressive “classical mix” album from Carl Cragi and Basic Channel’s Moritz, issued by the label responsible by the original recordings: Deutsch Grammophone. A reconfiguration of original music by Maurice Ravel & Modest Mussorgsky. Calsound Recommended!

DJ Melee
Malcolm Catto’s Heliocentrics have solidified a repuation as one of the modern vinyl buyer’s favorite groups with their releases on NowAgain Records, and the third 12” single from the “Out There” album puts Vast Aire in the shoes previously occupied by Guilty Simpson and DOOM. With the unreleased track on the flip, make it 3 for 3!!!
Brand new volume pits DIZZY RASCAL vs THE BAR KAYS, CHAKA KHAN and MARY J BLIGE’s “Respectful” w/ live bass guitar and extra friendly dancefloor prod, DE LA SOUL’s “I BE BLOWIN” w/live drums, guitar, & bass for added headz feel + dancehall rework of DJ KOOL’S “LET ME CLEAR MY THROAT”
Four laid back boogie funk tracks from Kido Yoji on Greenskeepers Music. “Won’t You Come Again” is largely dependent on the feel-good melodies created by the piano and synth layers, with heavy vocoder action and dynamic bass rounding out the record.
From within the enclave of Boston’s dance community emerges the duo of DJ Melee & Shuman. For Sturdy Recordings second release, Ionic , a pure tech house affair builds the bridge of two artists with fanatically refined sounds. Swinging drum rhythms, subtle percussion and swift building passes phase you thru the pulse of this breathing number.

WOMEN IN
HORROR
The Twisted Soska Twins
By Beth Accomando Canadian identical twins Jen and Sylvia Soska don’t complain. They take action. “We were disenchanted with acting due to the limited and stereotypical roles that were available for identical twins,” Sylvia explains, “so we went to film school to get into another field. At the time, we wanted to focus on stunt work because of our martial arts background but when the stunt portion of the course ended so did anything that even resembled a ‘school’. Our last project’s funding was cut and we were told to merge with another group. It annoyed us so much that we decided we would work outside of the school, and make a fake trailer.” When they screened the trailer “half the audience walked out and the other half was cheering so loud that you could hardly hear the offensive dialogue that we wrote.” And so Dead Hooker in a Trunk was born. The sisters served as writers, directors, and stars, and delivered an exploitation thrill ride where the women get to kick ass – both behind and in front of the camera. “I want horror to lose its ‘sub genre’ stereotype,” says sister Jen, “I hate when people refuse to see a horror movie because it’s ‘too scary.’ Life is scary. The world is a fucked up place. Awful things happen every day, all over the world. Among so many other things, horror examines the awful and helps us come to terms with it. Understand it. We try to put things that terrify us in our work. That will become more and more evident in our upcoming works.”
Their second feature is called American Mary and follows a medical student and surgeonhopeful, Mary Mason played Ginger Snaps’ amazing Katharine Isabelle. “Mary becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted with the medical school and established doctors she once idolized,” Sylvia explains, “The lure of easy money and recognition for her work draws her into the world of underground surgeries where more marks are left on her than her so-called ‘freakish’ clientele.” The teaser available online reveals a distinct change of style from the do-it-yourself, run-and-gun exploitation of Dead Hooker in a Trunk. American Mary is pushing them in exciting new ways and revealing a subtler approach but one that will not flinch from gore. “There is some downright vile, cringe worthy, what the fuck moments in Mary, and I had no [studio] meeting trying to replace this or that with something safer,” says Sylvia about working with Industry Works on American Mary, “They are still an independent company, but they are artists that work brilliantly with other artists.” In real life Jen says she likes to try to do something that scares her everyday, something that puts her outside her comfort zone.

MINI REVIEWS
WATCH THIS By Beth Accomando The Adjustment Bureau (Universal)
It’s The Matrix meets Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as Emily Blunt and Matt Damon try to maintain a love affair while eluding stuffy and perhaps heavenly agents that are trying to keep them apart and erase their memories of each other. Blunt is lovely; Damon is bland; and the agents are amusing. Opens March 4.
Take Me Home Tonight (Relativity Media)
So Hollywood got tired of doing bad remakes of 80s films and have now just decided to go back to the 1980s to make a bad “original” film. Topher Grace stars in and produces this painfully unfunny romantic comedy. Plus Dan Fogler – trying to channel Sam Kinison’s screeching comic style – is as appealing as nails on a chalkboard. Avoid this one at all costs. Opens March 4.
Vanishing on 7th Street (Magnet)
And that’s the appeal of horror she says, “It’s a thrill, but it’s a safe thrill. You can come face to face with terrifying creatures, situations, and people all from the safety of your seats. Some things we can’t experience outside of horror films. There has always been a fascination with the unknown and the dark side. People want to explore that and so do we.” But a person’s physical reaction to being scared at a horror film is the same as when he or she is aroused says Sylvia: “Pupils dilating, increased heat rate, every sense is heightened. Horror means something exciting will happen, usually someone will die - it’s got the morbid appeal of staring at a crash accident without the moral weight of reality.” The Soskas’ Dead Hooker in a Trunk will soon be released on DVD and BluRay. American Mary is currently in pre-production. The twisted Soska twins are definitely women in horror that you’ll want to follow.
A clever and sometimes creepy premise lures you into Brad Anderson’s latest film but it’s not enough to hold you with the likes of Hayden Christiansen on board. It’s an apocalypse film of sorts and there’s nothing more terrifying than to think Christiansen might be the last man on earth. This one tries but doesn’t succeed enough. Opens March 4.
Rango
(Paramount)
What’s the point of casting Johnny Depp if you are only going to use his voice and not those gorgeous cheekbones? Well he was enjoyable doing the Corpse Bride so maybe this isn’t a bad idea after all. He plays a chameleon that aspires to be a swashbuckling hero. Depp reteams with director Gore Verbinski, the man who launched the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. We’ll have to wait and see what color this chameleon turns out to be. Opens March 4.
Battle: Los Angeles (Columbia)
You could call this Skyline Redux or Skyline with a budget but essentially Battle: Los Angeles has the same plot of humans fighting off an alien invasion in LA. Wow! Like that’s never happened before. A lot of things will blow up and it will be noisy but that’s all I can guarantee. Not hoping for more than special effects eye candy even with Aaron Eckhart. Opens March 11. Women in Horror Massive Blood Drive PSA Jen & Sylvia Soska - Sierra Pitkin as their young star

CALI PARTY BUS The San Diego Night Life Experts
Cali Party Bus prides itself on being a limo bus industry leader. Not only do they have one of the largest California party bus fleets, they also have the best sales and party bus reservation specialists that will assist you courteously and professionally. They have years of party bus experience and provide excellent party planing ideas. Need help finding the best restaurant or nightclub? Whatever your needs may be, their party bus expertise will help make your San Diego Party Bus experience the most enjoyable. They are the San Diego night life experts! All you have to do is call toll free at 888 420-2254. We recently sat down with one of the owners Matt Berger and this is what we learned: 1: Let’s start with the basics. What possessed you to get into the party bus industry? We originally started in 2007 as a hop-on hop-off backpacker bus taking international travelers from hostel to hostel, just like the popular model overseas. Unfortunately the demand was too low and expenses too high, so we transformed our buses into nightclubs on wheels, just as the limo bus industry was entering a massive growth spurt. Our high quality customer service and unique vehicles caught on so we ran with it! 2: The slow economy seems to be affecting a lot of businesses, but it seems you are thriving. What can you attribute this to? I think there’s a couple reasons why our industry has continued to grow while most others are receding: 1. Alcohol sales are generally up across the country (probably due to unemployment), and 2. People are realizing the benefits of

renting a party bus as opposed to taking other means of transportation. You get to be with 40 of your friends in a nightclub atmosphere and it’s a lot less expensive than a taxi or a DUI. 3: How many Cali Party Buses are in your fleet now? Right now we have 11 buses between the 2 cities, San Francisco and San Diego. And we are looking to expand to other markets in the upcoming year. 4: Which Cali Party Bus is your favorite? The all new Pink Party Bus has got to be one of the coolest buses out there. It’s a partnership with the Susan G Komen foundation, so it’s nice to be part of something that’s bigger than just driving drunk people around. A portion of the Pink Bus proceeds are donated to the foundation, so Cali Party bus is driving towards a cure! 5: What are the benefits of renting a Cali Party Bus from you? One of the things we are most proud of at CPB is the unparallel level of customer service and professionalism that our staff and drivers offer. From the moment you call us to your last dance step we want our customers to feel like they were taken excellent care of and provided with an exceptional and memorable experience. One of the more interesting facts about Cali Party Bus is that all of our buses are custom built here in San Diego by an awesome team of dedicated coach builders. Each bus is a one of kind with all the latest lights and audio equipment with plenty of space to dance and move around. We build a new bus about every 3-6 months so the equipment is always new and fresh.
6: What are some of your specialized tours? Some of our most popular tours are local San Diego Craft Brewery Tours, Temecula Wine Tasting, and our VIP club packages. We have great relationships with all the top nightclubs in San Diego and offer custom packages with VIP entrance, bottle service, and round trip limo bus transportation. 7: Who is you typical customer? It ranges from 10 year old birthday parties to retirement home casino trips and everything in between. We do bachelor parties, corporate holiday parties, military deployment parties – just about everyone can find a reason to rent a bus. 10: Do you ever drive the Cali Party Busses? I drive all the time and love doing it. It’s a great feeling to watch people enjoying themselves with something you built with your own hands. The best is when someone tells us they had the best time of their lives! I believe them every time. 11: And finally, anything exciting coming up in the future for Cali Party Bus? We just started building some of the largest party buses in the country! They are going to be massive, up to 60 people rocking out all night. We have some new partnerships coming up with more awesome bus wraps just like the Hard Rock Intervention Bus and FLUXX Bus. Keep your eyes open on the road for us.
