Well David, One thing you need to remember is that we come out mid month. We don’t like to get mixed in with all the other free mags on the 1st. This last issue was scooped up in about 3 days. 20,000 copies evaporated. It’s amazing what a beautiful woman on the cover does. Anyway, we are adding a subscription link to our web page soon, so sign up. Until then, we deliver from border to border in San Diego County. You can find us in coffee shops, fitness centers, clubs, restaurants, boutiques, tattoo parlors, hair salons, grocery stores, convenience stores, all the college campuses, record stores, games stores, basically anywhere that is cool. So, if you still can’t find us, then you’re just too late. REVOLT I just heard you guys are the sponsor of the Side Stage at the X-Fest this year. How the hell did you pull that one? What else you guys got up your sleeve? TED Hey Ted, Yeah, I just heard the ad on 91X too. Pretty friggin cool huh? When they invited us to be the sponsor over there we were pretty much blown away. Guess we’re doing something right. We have all local acts on the side stage. Check us out. We are also throwing these club events at Brick By Brick called Agent Orchid. Kinda a mix of live music, art, burlesque and nightclub. Merge and Bad Girl are in on it with us so between all of us it’s a pretty creative environment. Last one went off with a bang. Next one we have ‘Toledo’ booked. This guy brings it. Gonna be siiiiick. Dear Revolt, I saw you guys are doing a Surf Comp this summer. When is it gonna happen, Date? Cost? The Second Annual Revolt Summer Surf Series will be held the 3rd Saturday in June, July & August. September we hold the finals. Four Events. Four Beaches. Tons Of Swag. The cost will be 20 bucks for the amateur rider. Little more for the pros. We’ll have an ad in the next issue of Revolt. Keep reading.
BACKWASH Editorial Note
Last month we received a huge number of emails regarding the cover and photo spread in the last Issue. Seems most folks think that it was our finest issue to date. We agree, it’s a pretty solid issue. There were also a couple of comments on the fact that we failed to give photo credits on the cover. The man responsible for the shot is none other than our buddy Aaron Riveroll. If you notice he is also one of the photographers that shot this months Swimwear photoshoot. We work with many talented photographers but we have to give an extra shout to the guys from Essence Digital Imaging for their professionalism and hard work. Also a big Thank You to John and Peyton from the new Hard Rock Hotel for making this month‘s shoot a huge success.
Hey Leslie, I seriously can’t find a copy of Revolt anywhere. The place I used to get one just closed... I’ve been asking around, but seems like they’re all gone. Can I get a subscription, so I can for sure get one every month. David of SLD
Hey, did anyone notice the hidden ‘R’? Hey, does anyone really care?
Ok guys, not cool. I have a job. I have bills to pay. I need to stay focused on work. How is anyone supposed to concentrate when those two girls on the cover are looking at you? I tried to hide the issue in a drawer. No good. I knew it was there. I knew it needed to be thumbed thru one more time. The boss caught me reading it and he snagged it. Now all I can think of is “how I am going to get it back?”. By force? I don’t think he’s gonna let me just walk into his office and demand it back. I wonder if I can get up in the ventilation shaft...drop down from the ceiling.... Ok brother, you’re kinda creepin us all out. LET IT GO. Thank you to whoever is responsible for covering all the Koastal Kaos Surf Contests. My son is riding in almost every event. He’s doing pretty good & getting better all the time. He has a blast competing. But his biggest rush is when he grabs a copy of your magazine and sees his picture. Can’t tell you how happy that little grom is over this brush with ‘fame’. Anyway, you guys are fighting the good fight. Keep it up. Dad Appreciate the shout, Dad. Thanks to Toby Ogden. He’s the eye behind the lens. Make sure you sign up Junior for our surf series, coming up this summer.

PUBLISHERS NOTE Well, I guess that about seals it...I just got an email announcing that the season is over at Bear Mountain. Oh well, Leslie and I got in some great days up there this year. Thanks to the staff at Bear Mountain for all the passes & hook-ups. That was a great season. What are we gonna do with our weekends now? Oh yeah. SUMMER”S COMING! I’ve had enough of the cold. Now, let’s heat things up. How ‘bout we start off with the Annual Swimwear Issue? That should do the trick!
Top O’ The World Ma!
Oh, and unless you live under a rock, you probably know that the concert season is nearly upon us. Viejas is lining up awesome shows for the whole summer. In fact, Seether is coming up next weekend. We’ll be front row, center for that, you can be sure. Live Nation & House of Blues have a ton of great shows coming as well. Just heard a rumor that Rob Hagey is bringing Street Scene back downtown where it belongs. Did I forget anyone? Oh, anyone hear about a little music festival by the name of X-FEST? It’s official, we’re the proud sponsors of the side stage this year. 91X has put together a great line-up of bands to make this the most memorable X-Fest in years. May 16th at Qualcom. This is gonna be fun. Peace - B

MOTHER EARTH NEWS PLASTICS #1 TRASH ON BEACHES More than 80,000 pieces of plastic and items made from plastic or Styrofoam were collected by over 2,800 Surfrider Foundations and San Diego Coastkeeper volunteers during beach cleanups in San Diego County last year, highlighting the problem of plastic litter locally and around the world. Cigarette butts continue to be the top item found at local cleanups, even with smoking bans at most beaches throughout San Diego County. Traditional butts are made of “synthetic polymer cellulose acetate” and never degrade, only breaking apart after roughly 12 years. Yet within an hour of contact with water, cigarette butts can begin leaching chemicals such as cadmium, lead and arsenic into
Plastics, especially single-use or “disposable” types, are becoming an increasing problem for the marine environment. In the North Pacific Gyre there is an area twice the size of Texas called “the garbage patch,” where plastic outweighs plankton by a ratio of 6-to-1. Plastic bags have been know to choke turtles, birds have been found dead with their stomachs full of plastic, and many types of marine life have been entangled in wayward plastic fishing gear. For more information about San Diego Coastkeeper and San Diego Chapter of Surfrider Foundation monthly beach cleanups please visit www. sdcoastkeeper.org or www.surfriderSD.org.
the marine environment. Perhaps more shocking is the large amount of plastics and items made from plastic or Styrofoam that were collected by volunteers throughout the year. Of the 3 ½ tons of trash removed, half of the items were made of plastic. It is estimated that up to 80 percent of marine debris comes from land based sources. Surfrider and Coastkeeper volunteers make a direct impact by helping to keep the beaches clean and working to prevent litter from getting into the oceans.
SPEND TAX REBATE WISELY: SPEND TO SAVE ENERGY. Starting in May some 130 million US taxpayers will begin receiving rebate checks from the Internal Revenue Service. The checks, ranging from $300 up to a couple of thousand or so depending on family size, are part of an economic stimulus plan to get the country’s economy moving forward again. The checks will encourage spending and give the country a jump-start, Washington politicians say, and America will be on its merry way once again: Recession fixed, mission accomplished. Yeah right. Most likely people will use the money to pay down credit card bills or for those with less debt, spend it on a vacation or some frivolous personal gift like a 52-inch Asian-made flat screen TV. Wiser folks might consider this: If a gift is what’s wanted for themselves why not a gift that keeps on giving? Why not invest the rebate in energy savings? High energy costs are part of the reason the US is in a funk. Using the money to save energy will continue save money on a regular basis for years; possibly save more the cost of the initial energy saving purchase. And, there are other benefits beyond being personally thrifty with energy: To some small extent the environment is improved as greenhouse gases and pollution are cut; the nation as a whole gets slightly less dependent on imported petroleum fuels; and in some cases energy savings creates jobs right here at home. Here are some ideas for an energy savings wish list: • Put the rebate towards a down payment on a new or used vehicle that gets better fuel economy than the one you have now. It doesn’t have to be a hybrid, just more efficient. • Buy a house full of energy efficient light bulbs. • Buy outright or put a down payment on a new water heater or Energy Star Appliance.. • Use the rebate towards a down payment on a new energy saving heating and air conditioning system for your home. • There are numerous other energy saving things you can buy with your rebate: a flat-screen monitor for your computer, an electric or battery powered lawn mower, more insulation for your attic, a solar powered attic vent fan, storm doors, storm windows, ceiling fans, light-blocking blinds to name a few. • On a grander scale the rebate could add to a down payment for a solar or small wind system for your home. Depending where you live, your state or utility company may have incentives that could help defray the cost of your energy efficient purchases further. The Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy keeps track of many of these.

TRAVEL TIPS
HOW TO CAMP GREEN MINIMAL IMPACT MEANS NO FOOTPRINT
As the weather heats up it’s inevitable that some of you may feel the need to bust out and sleep under the stars for awhile. There’s nothing better than an isolated stretch of beach in Baja, a blazing bonfire at sunset and your beautiful babe laying by your side. Sounds like a dream, but in reality the damage most of us leave behind on a camp trip is more like a nightmare. The next time you reach that favorite camp area, take a minute to look around. Notice the crap that others before you have left behind? A little wrapper here, a plastic bottle there and, ugh, what’s that behind that bush? Even if you leave just a little mess this time, the camper setting up in that spot next will add a little more and so on, until the perfect spot is a disgusting garbage dump. Keep in mind that everytime you camp, ‘Leave it cleaner than when you got there.’ Dont be a dick, take a few minutes before you set up to pick up from the previous camper. We know it’s not yours, but it’ll score ya some kharma points (and your camping experience will be better without all their crud laying around anyway, right?) Being respectrful of your surroundings while you camp is just common sense. Prepping in advance with the environment in mind is an excellent way to make sure your impact is minimal. Before you leave, you need to stock up with a few wisely chosen items.

ogy can be extended to what makes us who we are; the pressures of the world around us forms us into Diamonds. As we mature, this pressure has made us hard and strong. Upon the discovery of a Diamond, potential is immediately seen. We see this potential in each other. We all have the potential for greatness, and our lives of struggle and pain have made us strong. These Rough Diamonds are taken in, shaped and polished, until the true nature of it’s beauty is revealed. When an individual enters the Diamond Dogs, they are viewed the same way, as a “Rough Diamond.” Upon the discovery of this potential, it is our purpose to form and polish the Rough Diamond and reveal it’s beauty. The second part of the name reveals another side to it’s personality. The dog is man’s best friend. It is a loyal companion. Through thick and thin, you can count on it being by your side. It’s this celebration of friendship, bound by loyalty and love, which makes the symbol of the Dog equally important. Another facet is that a dog’s parents don’t necessarily have to be the same breed. This corresponds to the mixture of individuals in the Diamond Dogs; few of us are the same breed. We are an eclectic mix of individuals from all walks of life. We represent the true vision of America’s foundation, as a melting pot of cultures. The Diamond Dogs break this down on an even further level to create a melting pot of subcultures. These sub-cultures range from everything including (but definitely not limited to): graffiti artists, tattoo artists, students, teachers, poets, DJs, musicians, producers, clothing designers, piercers, and business owners/entrepreneurs. We are bound under the family name of Diamond Dogs, and in this family is a culture of its own. Everything from the way we greet each other, to the way we show ourselves in public is a constructed ritual. Diamonds always shine, and we shine by our actions and how we carry ourselves. We can be spotted in public easily. Regardless of our particular style, we have Diamond Dogs em-

NEUMA TATTOO MACHINE About CORE TATTOO’S Use of the Pneumatic System
Tattoo health risks are probably the last thing that you want to think about if you’re either already inked or are considering getting a new tattoo. The crew at Core Tattoo are leading the industry in eliminating this risk altogether. The Use of the Neuma Tattoo Machine as well as Jun-Air compressors create the cleanest environment possible. 1) Jun-Air medical grade clean air compressor 2) Use of the Neuma Tattoo Machines a. The Neuma is autoclavable and goes into the autoclave after I finish a tattoo. b. The Neuma has no electrical components making the machine autoclavable, which results in a cleaner, safer tattoo experience for both the artist and the subject. There are no electrical surges, which allows the Neuma machine to run more smoothly than the traditional electric machines. The Neuma is light-weight (1.5 oz) and has a more ergonomic design helping to eliminate wrist discomfort, fatigue, and the potential for carpal tunnel syndrome. The Neuma design also adds to the comfort of the customer with noticeably less pain than with the traditional electric machine. 3) Use of disposable hoses, which means that spools of tubing can be cut to each artist’s specific needs, and more importantly, thrown away after being used. Some artists find that with a Neuma they can get details they could never get with a bulky, heavy coil machine. Some people claim it hurts less. Some think the sound is more soothing than a coil. Most say that the healing time is cut in half. Without a doubt this is definitely the next generation equipment for tattoo studios.

The series continues to attract more…and better surfers. As a result, heats had to be added to accommodate all the last minute entries. The surf was clean and fun on Saturday for the early rounds and for the Women’s and Master’s finals. For Sunday’s action, the surf unexpectedly pumped up a notch, and competitors in the Groms, Boys, Juniors, and Open Men’s division were lighting up the shoulder to head-high+ peaks at Seaside all day long. Guys like Nat Young from Santa Cruz, Macy Mullen from Hawaii, the McCabe brothers from Ventura, and Solana Beach local Eric McHenry were blowing up big scores throughout the day. Spectators and the KK Contest Crew witnessed some of the best surfing ever at a KK event.

MMA
WEC ANNOUNCES URIJAH FABER vs. JENS PULVER Las Vegas – One is a legend in the sport of mixed martial arts; the other is an established star on his way to greatness. But when MMA pioneer Jens Pulver challenges WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber on Sunday June 1st at ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California, only one of these 145-pound fighters will emerge with the victory in the most important featherweight bout of all-time. The World Extreme Cagefighting® (WEC™) organization is pleased to announce WEC: Faber vs. Pulver, a card which not only features the epic clash between the two best featherweights on the planet, Faber and Pulver, but a WEC bantamweight title fight between Mexican warriors Miguel Angel Torres and Manny Tapia, and the highly anticipated debut of Mark, “The Filipino Wrecking Machine,” Munoz. In the main event, one of the MMA’s best pound for pound, Urijah Faber, defends his WEC Featherweight title against UFC® and PRIDE® veteran Jens, “Lil Evil,” Pulver. With technique, tenacity, and charisma, Sacramento’s own Urijah Faber (20-1), has proven time and time again why he is considered one of the best fighters in MMA today. Faber captured the WEC title in March of 2006 with a decisive second round stoppage of Cole Escovedo. Since then, he has continued to dominate the division, defending his crown with first round wins over Joe Pearson, Dominic Cruz, and Chance Farrar. His most recent victory came against Jeff Curran, where he displayed top notch submissions, choking Curran out in the second round. But on June 1, he will return home to fight for the first time in close to two years when he battles his toughest opponent yet in former UFC Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver. A true MMA pioneer who put the lighter weight classes on the map, Jens Pulver (22-8-1) has reinvigorated his career with a return to the featherweight division, where he is currently unbeaten in eight fights, including a 35 second submission win over Cub Swanson in his WEC debut last December. Now closing in on Faber and a shot at becoming one of the few fighters in history to win a major title in two different weight classes, Pulver plans on bringing more than a “Lil’ Evil” to the cage with him on June 1st.

“If you’re making music to follow a trend, the music dies when the trend dies”
Leslie and I were two hours into the swimwear shoot taking place poolside at the new Hard Rock Hotel in downtown San Diego. Justin Postin of SRH showed up with a box of fresh bikinis. “Scott and Pat should be here any minute.” He announced. Nice. Haven’t seen the boys in months. It’ll be nice to catch up and get the inside scoop on their jump to new label, Suburban Noize. Minutes later I see Scott Russo & Pat ‘P.K.’ Kim roll up to the Moonstone bar. Scott looks every bit the part of a rockstar with oversized shades and the brim of his hat pulled low. Pat quietly slides into a chair at the bar. Both are dressed head to toe in black. I introduce them to a couple of our models. Scott’s eyebrows go up and down a couple times fast. He nods approval. I throw the company card on the bar and let the bartender know the tab is open for the lads. We sat down at the bar, and after a few shots of Patron, we are fully engulfed in a nice chat. Topics range from kids and marriage, to the band, the changes through the years, and their signing with a new label. Leslie and I take turns firing questions at the guys till it turns to flowing conversation. The bar gets increasingly noisy as the Padres Fans start overflowing from the ballpark. Padres won.

Talking with Pat, who defected from Sprung Monkey in 98’ and is closing in on nearly a decade with the band, tells us “It’s taken just the right confederacy to refine Unwritten Law’s signature sound”. The guys were pretty modest about what to expect from the new album, but Pat breaks it down sensibly enough; “You know it’s gonna have a great melody to it, it’s gonna have some good heavy guitars, and a good hook”. “Most importantly, each infectious strum and smash is a prod-
Within a few minutes they are swarmed by a group of cute girls. Hugs kisses & laughter. “Get these girls a round of drinks!” Scott yells to the bartender. “I’ve known this girl since ninth grade” He reaches over and hugs her again. “That’s Steve’s wife from Sprung Monkey.” He points to her friend. Cool. The gangs all here. A little re-cap on the life of Unwritten Law. You’ve probably rocked out to the harmonic fireworks of Seein Red, air-scratched the turntable squeaks of Cailin, and karaoked to the staccato self-deprecation of Save Me. But guaranteed you didn’t realize that Unwritten Law were the chameleons behind all three. It’s not your fault. Over the last 14 years, labels have fought the Law, and the labels won. In true punk rock style they have left every label they have worked with.
uct of instinct, not pandering”. Simply put, Unwritten Law has grown up a bit, but still play by their own rules. “When we’re making music, it’s coming from a pure place, and not coming from a place where we are trying to be a part of something. I think it’s the most punk rock thing you can do” laughs Scott. “We’ve never done anything to secure longevity; we just write songs about our lives, luckily our hardcore fans have come along with us”. They are looking forward to their upcoming San Diego show at Viejas Concerts in the Park, on May 3rd, “It’s going to be off the hook” and with Suburban Noize, “We see an amazing future with this label, I think we’ll stick around for awhile” I have to agree with Scott, Suburban Noize is blowing up a number of great acts.

For those of you who remember, the Hanalei Hotel bar used to be full of lava rock, streams, and waterfalls. Toledo played in the lava cave. Cocktail nation was the first to bring back lounge, exotica, and swing music in 1996; it was the forefront of the renewed Burlesque show explosion and lounge scene where Fez hats were common and giant scorpion cocktails were standard. Toledo’s style back then was zoot suits and flapper girls. His style morphed in the early 2000’s to a leather, fetish kind of look. BEAT UNION By Brendan Foote
Forging remnants of the anti-establishment punk style of the Clash with the beats and progressions of true pop hits, the UK has produced Beat Union, yet another band worthy of world interest. Their highenergy punk rock stage presence quickly riled up a sold out Belly Up Tavern crowd in Solana Beach, CA. Singer/guitarist Dave Warsop, drummer Luke Johnson, guitarist Dean Ashton and bassist Ade Preston, of Beat Union will be the first to humbly admit that the road from rocking out the garage in their hometown outside Birmingham, UK to playing sold out shows across the United States was no easy feat. The band caught the attention of acclaimed punk-rock music producer and front man of Goldfinger, John Feldmann, who, in turn continues to be a defining stepping-stone for the band in their achieving success. Feldmann brought them to Los Angeles and worked with the band in recording their debut album “Disconnected” which takes shelf April
What is the best part about being on tour? The Best thing about being on the road is meeting so many new music lovers, also being from across the pond people want to hear our story and maybe crack the occasional joke about our “Limey” accents, but I think being a team and actually getting up everyday and doing what we want to do and living out our dreams is pretty sick too. There’s nothing else I would rather be doing!!! What was it like working with John Feldmann? SICK! We learned so much from him, he totally made us better song writers, players and performers. When you start working with a guy like that you really got to step up your game. He really did make recording the easiest experience ever. He definitely knows how to get the best out of us in the studio.

The first time we recorded with Feldy, we were still using our old name “Shortcut to Newark” and for some reason people just didn’t get what we were saying. It was almost like a language barrier, someone would ask the name of the band and we would say “Shortcut to Newark” they would be like “oh right sweet, short bus to Newark” or “shortcut to New York” so it had to change. We went through so many ideas, and we ended up with “Love Beat Union”, we wanted a name with out “the” at the start something different and English. But then it was a united decision to drop the “love” and we ended up where were at now with Beat Union, but still people call us “The Beat Union.” I guess we will never escape it, he laughs.

HEAR THIS By Leslie Krouse
Editor’s Pick - The Kooks – KonK Genre: Alt/Indie/Pop-Rock Well here it is, the CD for the summer. The Kooks, ‘KONK’ has captured that blend of ‘60s and ‘90s style, of the Beatle’s meet The Kinks Britpop, combined with the new millenniums post-punk movement. They have a strong, but subtle tone, that is characterized with the same easy-going sound, as the debut album, ‘Inside In/Inside Out’, but this time The Kooks have conquered a new part of post punk dance rock territory, by adding a more laid back feeling to its music, and at the same time Hugh (guitar), Max (bass), and Paul (drums) all unite into a more harmonious sound combinations than before. As on the previous record, all the lyrics on Konk are performed with a strong British accent, by front man Luke Pritchard whose voice could be compared to lead vocalist Robert Smith of The Cure. ‘Always where I need to be’ the first release from this album, has the perfect upbeat tempo, intense acoustic guitars, and a catchy chorus that is full of energy. ‘Mr. Maker’ & ‘Stormy Weather’ are definitely ones to look out for. They may be a young band, but I think all the seasons of touring, has giving them experience beyond their years, which is evidently apparent in their music. Konk is on sale now, I suggest picking up a copy.
Don Cavalli –Cryland Genre: Soul/Jazz/Funk
The sultry, soulful sound, reminiscent of Americana southern blues singers, such as Johnny Rivers, and the talent and storytelling capabilities of John Lee Hooker, unless you’ve seen him in person, you would never guess he’s white guy from France. Cavalli’s undeniable talent is in his ability to mix the genres of rock and roll, blues, and 1960s soul with Zydeco and Cajun rhythms to form addictive grooves. Combine this with more funky beats and an unstoppable wah-wah pedal and the result is a full dance floor. The album’s standout track, ‘I’m Going to A River’, is a clear culmination of Cavalli’s diverse musical influences. “Regardless of virtuosity,” Cavalli explains, “the main thing [for me] is to swing something honest.” Despite Cavalli’s French background, ‘Cryland’ truly hits the mark with its earnest and sincere interpretation of American genres. His CD is due to be released, on April 22nd; you can also catch his show, on the same day at the Casbah, brought to you by the Belly Up Tavern.
Portishead – Third Genre - Unique
Portishead announce the release of ‘Third’ their hugely anticipated new album, their fourth album in total, and first since 1998’s ‘Roseland NYC live’. It’s definitely worth the 10 year wait. Third is ready to please the fans, with a heavier and darker material, with more rock elements to it, and arrangements with a rawer sound closer to lo-fi. The powerful electro-tech sounds from Geoff Barrow, and Adrian Utley completely surrounds the incredibly sweet voice of lead singer Beth Gibbons, in ‘Machine Gun’ it utterly puts you into a trance. ‘Small’ is probably one of the most beautiful tracks, simple guitar, some cello, and Beth’s gentle vocal kick things off, and then a great organ line brings a whole 70’s Moroccan feel to my mind. Third is a very different beast from anything Portishead have offered up in the past. Third hits the stand on 4/28.
IAMX – The Alternative Genre –Kick Ass
The U.S. debut, and release of ‘The Alternative’ on May 6th, IAMX has a hit here. Equal parts electro, synth-funk, rock, trip-hop, and Chris’s signature vocals combine to create a truly unique sound. Standout tracks include the title track ‘The Alternative’, ‘Nightlife’, and ‘Lulled by Numbers’. ‘The Alternative’ is an extremely catchy funk-rock stomper that I found I had to listen to several times in a row before continuing on to the rest of the album, mostly due to the strength of the vocals. It’s definitely one of the strongest songs Chris has come out with to date. ‘Nightlife’ is a thumping electro tune that would find a happy place on any dance floor. ‘Lulled by Numbers’ finds Chris returning somewhat to his Sneaker Pimps roots, creating a brooding trip-hop tune laden with glitchy electronics and slow, deliberate drums. Much of the rest of the album continues in the same vein as one of these three tracks... Also worth noting are ‘After Every Party I Die’ and ‘This Will Make you Love Again’, Sneaker Pimps B-Sides that were re-worked for this album, much to their benefit.
Locals Only The Devastators – Better Days Genre - Reggae
You’ve heard one reggae CD, you’ve heard them all, right, not in this case. ‘Better Days’ features 15 tracts of original music, and has taken classic reggae ska rhythms, and instrumental percussions, then adds a fusion of roots reggae, with modern rock & jazz, that grooves conspicuously into the funky beat of this album. The smooth, sweet voice of Ivan Garzon, along with John, Alex, Brian, and the vast array of incredible talent, brought in to create this true work of reggae art. The title tract ‘Better Day’ is a perfect compilation of methodical lyrics, and pulsating instruments, to create this classic; I have to say this is probably my favorite. Well, then there’s ‘Been a Long Time’ seductive, feel good sound, and ‘Dub Away’ has a very cool hypnotic tempo, with the classic DUB sound, best listened to in an altered state of mind, if you know what I mean. Well, two thumbs up for these local guys, with sounds reminiscent of Steel Pulse, you can’t lose. Be sure to check out their web www.thedevastators.com to see where they are playing next, most likely at Longboard’s Grill.
Gerald Lee
Genre – Alt/indie rock
As a rule I never allow an artist to do his own review, ethically it doesn’t fly. But, in this case I’m going to allow it. Only because, after listening to his CD I agree, he has a great sound deserving of a little exposure. So here it is Gerald’s review on Gerald Lee. Known as the front man of San Diego born reggae band “Lifted Roots”, Gerald Lee reaches out to a deeper level of consciousness for his new solo EP ‘The Return’. ‘Be the One’ featuring MC Jonah from the R&B/Hip-Hop group, ‘Timeless’ gives a PM Dawn meets UB40 vibe, only to be answered by the heartfelt lyrics of family conversations in’ Story Tellers’. This CD is one of those albums that tend to take one away from the hustle and bustle of everyday nonsense, just long enough to enjoy the little things. With spiritually driven hooks and soothing melodies, ‘The Return’ is a must for your up and coming road trip! MUDCRUTCH REUNITED AFTER DECADES APART By Leslie Krouse Mudcrutch broke up some 33 years ago, just another regional band that had moved to LA in hopes of making it in the music business. And when they did break up, the world didn’t notice or care. What made Mudcrutch reform, and why now? Tom Petty has what is perhaps the most reasonable answer a musician can offer: “I guess I started thinking that we left some music back there, and it was time to go and get it.” Two Mudcrutch members, Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, had already heard mention of the idea. Granted, they had some doubt as to whether Tom Petty would actually follow through on it. Then Petty called Randall Marsh and Tom Leadon to run the idea past them. That’s when it started to get real. The headline finally looks something like this: Petty reforms Mudcrutch to make debut recording . . . late, but without a doubt not too late. So, the various members find a time they can get together. Tom Leadon, now working as a guitar teacher, and Randall Marsh, earning his bread in few bar bands, come into town and stay at Tom Petty’s house in Malibu. The Heartbreaker road crew builds a recording studio in the band’s rehearsal space. brings something equally powerful, and it’s the sound of a harmony singer with whom Petty learned to The self-titled Mudcrutch debut is a revelation. Shine a Light (Paramount Pictures) Martin Scorsese has directed two prominent music documentaries (The Last Waltz, No Direction Home) and The Rolling Stones have been the subject of multiple portraits (including Sympathy for the Devil, Gimme Shelter, Cocksucker Blues). Now they team up for Shine a Light, a concert film recorded in 2006 at Gotham’s Beacon Theater. Mick may be 64 but he still knows how to strut his stuff. Scorsese intercuts old interview footage where the Stones keep getting asked, “Can you imagine rocking and rolling in your sixties?” Apparently, the answer is yes. Opens April 4
My Blueberry Nights (The Weinstein Company) Hong Kong cult favorite Wong Kar-Wai directs his first English language film and proves that his rapturous romantic style translates well into any language. In the past his films have been about the impossibility of love, but this time around he leans more toward the sweet possibilities. Jude Law, Norah Jones, Natalie Portman, and Rachel Weisz star in this luminous mood piece. Opens April 18.
Zombie Strippers (Triumph Films) Let me see if I got this straight: a deadly chemical virus released by a secret government agency turns a stripper into a reanimated corpse that feeds on her customers who reanimate after death even if they are missing a few body parts? And there’s a stripper who quotes Nietzsche; the whole thing is inspired by theater of the absurd playwright Eugene Ionesco’s Rhinoceros; and it stars Robert “Freddy” Englund, Jenna Jameson, Goth rocker Roxy Saint, and UFC’s Tito Ortiz? This I gotta see!

I mean wouldn’t you think it was a joke if they called you and said we want to send you and your film The Station Agent to the Middle East? I was like, what? They had this outreach program where they said let’s go to different regions and show movies that people don’t normally see and possibly present a different side of American culture.” So McCarthy went to Lebanon and Oman and showed The Station Agent to Middle East audiences. The experience not only reinforced his commitment to further explore themes of connection and community but it also gave him the idea of creating an Arab supporting character for what

Walter, who’s been trying to learn how to play piano, becomes fascinated with Tarik’s djembe drums and begins to learn how to play. This pulls Walter out of his shell and he even starts to partake in the drum circles at Central Park. “Actor Richard Jenkins interestingly enough played percussion as a kid so he had a pretty good handle on it,” says McCarthy, “but I cast Richard because I felt like he would really disappear in the role. Richard has this wonderful everyman quality about him.”

R AM - a - lamba - ding dong! Your Train of Thought just derailed and crashed into the Chinese food takeout place, Aries! You need to delete the phone numbers of all your ex’s – you can’t be trusted with such information right now. And stop leaving YouTube comments to piss off the McCain fans. You’d be better served putting your energies into fixing that hole you knocked into your bathroom wall the night you decided to expand it. What a Load of BULLogna! Your “white lies” are starting to leave skid marks in yer oonderpants (too many pulled-pork sandwiches.) What kind of lonely birthday can a filthy, deceitful creature such as yourself hope to have? My prediction will be revealed in tomorrow’s trash with an empty bottle of wine and a used pregnancy test – both of the cheapest brands. Twinkle, TWINSle Little Star People always ask me if you’re gay. Naturally, I say YES. Well, I don’t wanna look like a liar! You act so super gay, Gemini, no matter who you claim to be boinking. Just admit it – you’re bi. It’s cool. Everybody’s doin’ it. I keep waiting for Disney to name a fairy “Gemini.” Tinkerbelle ain’t got nuthin’ on you! I CANCER Get No Satisfaction The worst thing you can do when the ol’ sexual dysfunction kicks in is apologize. Cancer, you are such a wuss! Just play it off. Blame it on yer mate. It’ll certainly deflect us from your shortcomings and we’ll start to feel like the fat one growing hair in inappropriate places… Instead of you. 60 WWW.REVOLTSD.COM
LEOve the Light On For the sake of whomever you get drunk enough to follow you home from the dive bar that puts umbrellas in your Long Island Iced Tea, you gotta tell them the truth Leo – it’s not just a rash and it IS contagious. Don’t feel bad though. Everyone has it these days… In the ghetto. VIRGIN and Tonic AA is for losers, Virgo! You’re too much fun to go sober. Let’s get a sixpack and go down to the mall to celebrate by people-watching. You can crush our cans on your forehead and I’ll do drunken cartwheels on the asphault. It’ll be just like the old days as we race to achieve the first head injury and blame it on mall security!
we’re all so impressed while pretending that we forget all about your trailer park past! But no matter how much you grow, hold onto your roots, dear Sagittarius, and don’t contradict yourself. It’s like Grandpa’s old saying: “If God didn’t intend for man to have sex with - and then eat - pigeons, He wouldn’t have made them so sexy and delicious!” That Really GOAT

Capricorn, quit bossing everyone around. Your coworkers have just about had it with your tall tales and interruptions. I’m just warning you – if you don’t learn to play well with others, I’m not gonna be responsible when there’s pee in your coffee (even though it’s my pee.)
Your LIBRAbido’s Dead

Yes, Libra, much like those middle-aged men who hope to win back their hairline and glory days by purchasing a flashy sports car, you too are trying to buy back youth. Stop that! Cos if you save your money you can at least buy love. (By “love” I mean of course, “hookers.”)
You go out with the biggest losers. Haven’t you learned anything from Aquarius Bobby Brown’s tell-all book about life with Whitney the crackhead? That fool wrote a whole book blaming her for his drug addiction. If your mate jumped over a cliff would you do it too? Probably would, you dumbasses. Especially if you thought it’d get you high.
Strummin’ My SCORPION with His Fingers It’s funny how good you think you are at karaoke. You wear that shiny shirt and have way too much product in your hair, so we have to shield our eyes when you take the stage. If only we could shield our ears. I’m gonna spell it out for you with some Helen Keller hand gestures: Y-O-U AR-E T-O-N-E D-E-A-F! Now quit doing my song, loseball!. ARCHER Glad You Used Dial? Somebody’s starting to clean up their act! And
You PISCES of Shit Much like the neighbors of Pisces Dane Cook, yours hate you too. He doesn’t pick up his dog’s crap! How gross is that?! If you’re a dirty Pisces, you’re thinking, “Not gross at all!” But your neighbors hate you far more and for a far more offensive reason. Quit playing the Dreamgirls soundtrack on repeat or I’m gonna come poop in your livingroom. No shit! (Pun intended.)
