e have just received some amazing news that should be of great interest to every surfer in and around San Diego... We’ll be running the fourth and final event of the RSSS 6.0 on the SOUTH SIDE OF CRYSTAL PIER. Yes, you heard correct. The City of San Diego and Pacific Beach Lifeguards have given the Revolt Summer Surf Series permission to move the entire setup to the south side of Crystal Pier, utilizing the previously off limit ‘swim only’ zone for our final event on October 6th. From what we hear, there has never been a surf comp allowed on the South side of the pier! Not sure about you, but I’ve been eyeballing-ing that peak for years. I even scratched under the pier a few times back in the day to catch a wave & promptly got chased back by the man! Pretty much the only way you can surf that peak without getting yelled at, is to compete in our event October 6. Now, just to make it even more interesting, we’ve added a MASTERS DIVISION to the final event. This division will showcase the best surfers around, age 30 and over (no pros... just the bros). Let’s see how many of our iconic San Diego surfers show up for this one! Yew!

Words and Interview: Michael Drentea | Photos: Chris Burkard Chris Burkard is the Senior Staff Photographer at Surfer Magazine. A self-taught photographer and winner of the 2006 Flame Grant, he is pushing the envelope to surf photography and has been published in every major surf magazine in the world. At only age 26 this young man’s journey has taken him to far off remote destinations in search of capturing a moment in time on his camera. Easier said than done, Chris will explore some of the pros and cons, do and don’ts of the wonderful world of surf photography. What kinds of potential dangers does an ocean surf photographer face? As surf photographers we’re often put into similar places as surfers, just with a different task. To get great water shots often at times you are teetering on the edge of making it under a wave or being sucked over the falls. Reef, rocks, currents, and large marine life are amongst the other dangers the ocean brings. In addition to the natural elements, add surfers and their boards into the mix and it’s a recipe for danger.
How has your internship with photographer Michael Fatali helped your landscape photography? Learning to approach surf photography with the mindset of a landscape photographer really helped me develop a sense of place within my photos. Being able to transport the viewer into the moment can be done in a variety of ways, but Michael really showed me how to use natural elements and lighting to do so.
What is your worst injury you have picked up shooting from the water? One time my housing broke my nose from hitting me in the face on a hard impact while in the surf impact zone. Unfortunately the housing won the battle with my face.
February 2012 you shot the cover of Surfer Magazine. As the Senior Staff Photographer for Surfer Magazine what elements go into choosing the cover? The composition of the shot for a cover usually has to be a certain way which makes room for the masthead and text. A cover shot needs to be a strong photo amidst all of the clutter text brings and grab the viewer’s eye right away regardless of their affiliation to surfing.
Have you ever lost photos or a camera from a trip? On a trip to Chile I had just shot the Red Bull Illume award winning photo the evening before. The next day I was out in a boat looking to shoot another wave when the boat driver got us into a sticky situation and ended up capsizing the boat. All my equipment was lost, but lucky for me I had switched out memory cards and did not lose that image. Where are some of your favorite locations to shoot? Lately, I have been traveling to places like Iceland and Norway. I love shooting anywhere the culture is relatively untouched by tourist influence. I am drawn to cold desolate places that have rugged landscapes and just as unique people as the character of the land.
You said once that “Somewhere in between 8 frames per second and 10 frames per second is usually where the moment is” can you explain further? I think the moment is something that photographers can’t always plan for. Some shots can be prethought or planned. But actually getting that special instant is not always thought of ahead of time. When you capture a moment that can never be captured again…that is the moment.
When shooting surf photography do you have a favorite surfer to shoot? I love working with local surfers in my area such as Nate Tyler, Chad Jackson, and Eric Soderquist. Surfers like the Malloy Brothers are also guys I love shooting with. I am often looking for surf in underdeveloped areas, so any surfer that is ok to get a little feral will usually fit in with my style of work.
What is “The California Surf Project?” Fall and winter of 2006 (directly after winning the Flame grant) my good friend and professional surfer Eric Soderquist and I hit the road in Eric’s 1978 V-Dub Bus. Surfing from border to border while documenting our journey on camera and video we traveled through California’s highways 1 and 101. It was an amazing adventure that completely changed my perspective on life and everything about the way I wanted to shoot. This book was made for one purpose, to inspire people to want to get out and discover California for themselves.
Why is natural lighting so important when documenting surf culture? Most times surfers are experiencing beautiful moments in natural lighting. Because of this I believe people are much more drawn to photos because it feels familiar. Natural lighting creates a timeless look that can resonate from generation to generation.
Do other surf photographers inspire you? Who? Just thinking about this question gets my head spinning… there are so many people that have influenced me and continue to influence me, not only as a photographer, but as a person. A few photographers that I would like to give credit to: HenriCartier Bresson, James Nauchtwey, Michael Fatali,

FLAME, Pete Taras, Nate Lawrence, Patrick Trefz, Joe Curren, Jeremiah Klein, and Ron Stoner. I also feel really influenced by a lot of younger photographers… I don’t think that you need to be some 30 year plus staff photographer to make a difference… Look at guys like Todd Glaser, Zak Noyle, Morgan Maassen, Mickey and others that are constantly reminding me how quickly surf photography is evolving. What is the most memorable moment of your career as a surf photographer? As a photographer winning the Red Bull Illume was a pretty memorable moment. It really brought my work to a global stage and gave people across the world a chance to view my work. It was an honor to be distinguished among so many talented photographers. As a self-educated photographer, give an example of what you taught yourself about composition, light, depth, contrast, and shadows? After graduating high school I took some art classes at a local junior college. This really gave me a better sense of composition and how to use depth, contrast and shadow to create an interesting piece of art. My internship under Michael Fatali really helped with my ability to see good light and use it in my photographs. Do you have any recommendations on cameras, housings, lenses and memory cards, fins? I shoot with Nikon and Sony gear always inside F-stop bags. I use SanDisk memory cards and Aquatech Water Housings. Fins I use DaFins for swimming and Patagonia wetsuits. I would highly recommend all of these, but at the same time believe it is important to find gear that fits a person’s shooting style. I try to pack as little as possible and focus on bringing bare essentials. What’s next for Chris Burkard? I have projects for days... I am headed to Kamchatka, Russia to surf this September and it’s going to be insane with bears, fishing, waves… and having to take a helicopter to breaks or use a 6 wheel tank. T
he RSSS Pro-Am is San Diego’s favorite Pro Am for a reason... It’s all about the surfers! When other pesky surfing associations hold their events on top of ours? No problem. A number of our pros get stuck back east with another comp? No problem. We make adjustments so our competitors can surf as many of our events as possible. It’s all about the surfers & making these events awesome. So, the third event is moved to September 8. No Problem! Historically the final two events draw even more competitors, and this year should prove the same. Especially when you consider the fourth and final event October 6 will run ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF CRYSTAL PIER and alongside the PB BeachFest. It is expected that 50-75,000 people will attend. This area is a ‘swim only’ zone year round. This is unprecedented and as far as we know, the only way to surf that peak south of the Pier is to sign up as a competitor on October 6. A Masters division will also be added to the event. Competitors this season include top riders like Eric McHenry: Three time RSSS Champion, Trevor Thornton: NSSA Men’s Champion, Jay Christenson: WSA U16 Season Champion, Tory Gilkerson: 4 Time US National Champion, Scott “Channy” Chandler: Professional Waterman & World Record Holder, as well as National Champion SUP Rider Daniel Hughes. Although the RSSS is a surf series, the events are open to the public. Riders of all levels can simply sign up and compete in the division of their choice. Daily winners are awarded trophies, cash & prizes after each event. Series winners score new boards, excellent tropies and more cool swag than any other competition around. Where else can you just show up & blow up a comp like this? All events are family friendly and take place at Crystal Pier in beautiful Pacific Beach.

ULISES THOMAS - LIFESAVER
Besides being an accomplished shortboarder, SUP and MX dude... Ulises is also a genuine hero. At a recent surf contest (not the RSSS) a competitor in the Masters division suffered a heart attack in the water. Ulises was first to respond, administered CPR and in short, saved that dude’s life. Good on ya, Uly & congratulation on the recent marriage!

Competing for a second season is NFL Superbowl Champion Brett Swain. Brett plays for the San Francisco 49ers (wide receiver) and was with the Green Bay Packers in 2010. He lives in Carlsbad and keeps in shape by training on a SUP board during the off season.

Brandon Roberts has been quietly chasing the RSSS Pro Am division title with two 1st place finishes so far this season. feel really stoked to have watched Nick Fowler kinda grow up in his surfing for the last 6 years. From a stoked little grom with extreme talent and enthusiasm to cultivating his aggressive style and froth in modern day form. Nick always has had the burst of brilliance even as a groom, but now you can expect something progressive and extreme on just about every wave. His attitude and commitment make him one of Newport’s hottest assets and no doubt he will continue to explode at a beach near you.
What if a genie gave you the choice between two thing. 1, be rich and never have to work again, or 2. be on the cover of Surfing 6 months in a row. What do you choose? I would choose to be rich and never have to work, then I would be able to go anywhere I want and shoot any wave.
What if you had to move to Huntington and grow a mullet just to be able to surf? I would rock the mullet and surf state beach ha...
What if you saw Josh Hoyer walking on water and Bobo shooting fire out of his eyes, would you run or air over their heads? I wouldn’t run from Hoyer cuz he does much more weird shit than that, and if Bob Okvist had fire coming out of his eyes I would tell him to point his fire at the crowds in the water to get everyone out.
What if you had to pick to surf like either Dane Reynolds for Julian Wilson, who would it be? Dane rips, I wish I surfed like him. What if someone blew up 54th street, would you be pissed and what would you do? 54 is already blown up, mags don’t even want photos from there.
What if you only boogie board or roller blade, what do you choose and why? I would roller blade. I would never wanna body board and then I could just roller blade to go surf.
What if your ear fell off and LIttle Wayne found it? I would tell Wayne that he raps so good my ear came off, then go party with him.

Pierre-Luc Gagnon Goes Head to Head Against Bucky Lasek at X Games & on The Dew Tour. Let’s just say, HE’S BACK!
It’s a time of redemption in the halfpipe for Pierre-Luc Gagnon, who after a season of disappointments in 2011, has earned back to back wins with his sixth X Games Skateboard Vert gold medal in July and first Place in skate vert at the 2012 Dew Tour Championships in August. At the Dew Tour, the first two rounds of competition were anything but easy for the 32-year-old as he had to battle just to make it to the last set of runs. It was his last run however, that put him over the top. The run used the curved coping feature of the ramp and incorporated several flip tricks, including a kickflip fakie, a switch heelflip 360 and a kickflip body varial 540.
“I had a hard time in practice, but kept my cool and threw it down when it mattered,” he said. “It feels great to perform in front of a crowd like this.” While the preliminary runs for the final session were tight, the last set was a runaway, with Canadian born, Carlsbad resident Pierre-Luc Gagnon coming out as the winner with a final score of 88.50, finishing ahead of the hometown hero Bucky Lasek and Brazilian native Sandro Dias. In July PLG took home X Games gold with another win that was equally as close with Lasek, in a tie breaker that took an average of the five judges’ scores on the athletes’ best runs. “That was my first main event of the year and it was good to break the ice with the biggest event,” Gagnon said. “It was a great battle. Gagnon threw out tricks like a kickflip body varial 540 into a body varial 5, a 720, a fakie switch heel 360 and a grapefruit grind to earn the win over Bucky Lasek. ine skaters. Three filmers. One Rock ‘N’ Roll tour bus outfitted with twelve sleeping bunks, two lounges, two flat screen televisions, one bathroom, and a full-time driver. Our destination? We are headed… Northbound and Down!
On June 17, 2012, we assemble a Father’s Day - Northbound and Down Skate Tour kick off party at our Coto de Caza home. The nachos machine is flowing, the grill is fired up, and forty friends and family members show up to share an epic bon voyage celebration. “We leave at midnight.”—the final words of my pre-tour speech to the guys coming along. I’m their team manager, so to speak. I have no experience. But I know how to arrange an awesome time. And with these last words, each skater receives his tour laminate and duffle bag full of sponsored goodies—Monster Energy bags, Etnies shoes, Iron Fist Clothing, and much more. The skaters—Stone Hendrikx, Gage Boyle, Shane George, Travis Harrison, Evan Dineen, Conner Norris, Jin Endow, Otto Ray and Matt McKay—spend the rest of the day jumping off of the waterfall into the pool, assembling their gear, and watching skate videos in anticipation of what some of them may remember as the best trip of their lives. Our plan is simple—to skate each day of the tour in a new city, from Southern California to Washington, and back. We have three digital SLR cameras to document our trip. Our destinations include a mix of skateparks and downtown urban environments in major cities including San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle. Along with our destinations, the boys have a challenge—one hundred tasks to be completed in the form of a King of the Road scavenger hunt. Tasks range from skate tricks to ridiculous missions—kiss a stranger, ollie over a homeless person, scream at cheese in a grocery store—each stunt must be documented on video to be validated. The team with the most challenges completed during the trip will earn reputation and awards. The trip is a major success. Beyond all of our planned stops, we are also invited to skate at Nike SB training facility—a private skatepark. We attend the Element Skate Camp on Lake Sequoia in King’s Canyon to skate and fish—joined by Nyjah Huston. The only way to truly comprehend what this trip is about is to attend. The next best way is to watch the videos, all available online and easily found using the hashtag #NBAD. And so we begin planning the next adventure. STREET SPOT #3 Earl Warren Middle School Hey, this is Stone Hendrikx with Revolt In Style Magazine, checking in with my friends Killian Martin and Otto Ray for this month’s Streetspotting. We picked up Killian at his house in Oceanside and before we left for our featured spot, Killian took us to skate a couple of great ledges in his neighborhood. Watching him do a handstand on a ledge and flip out of it, landing on his board was a highlight of the day. Killian rips for sure.

After the ledge session we headed over to our spot, Earl Warren Middle School. The spot has a famous twelve-stair and four-stair. The twelve is a little big for tricks, but the four-stair is perfect. It’s a great set to practice your tricks, especially over the weekends. Schools are usually pretty great spots for practicing your tricks, assuming a teacher isn’t working over the weekend and kicks you out. Killian says his favorite part of the school is the four-stair, but we watched him rip on the flat ground in the basketball courts. That space is perfect for his freestyle skating, or even for a good round of S-K-A-T-E. Make sure to watch my video edit of Earl Warren Middle School at RevoltInStyle.com. We had a lot of fun with this one between Killian’s fun freestyle skating and my dad trying to act like a shark, riding the board on his stomach. He can be pretty crazy sometimes but I still love him.

Having been defeated in 2011, the East Coast Marines were hungry for redemption & it was a strong battle between the teams. In the end, the West Coast Marines were forced to give up their surfboards to the East Coast Marines ending the competition with final team scores of 43 to 35. Semper Fi...dude.

Manny makes a comeback this year to earn 1st place The skateboarding talent was out at the Del Mar Arena, with great event support from OVERLOAD Skate Shop. More than 25,000 showed up to watch 64 skateboarders go all out. Some of the top skateboarders in the world were in the field: Ryan Decenzo, Tommy Sandoval, Tony Tave, Manny Santiago, Curtis Calamonico, Sierra Fellers, and Chad Fernandez.

Taking home a 3rd place finish was new Super Am Tyson Bowerbank, whose back three-ollie kickflip got the crowd loud. Last year’s winner Ryan Decenzo dominated the first half of the final heat with his consistent bag of tricks, but was edged out in the final minutes by Manny Santiago, who took home 1st place with an array of powerful tricks—notably his heelflip varial feeble grind down the rail that secured his redemption after last year’s 2nd place finish.

Felix Baumgartner has just completed a series of highaltitude test jumps in California to wrap up the development phase of his “Red Bull Stratos” project. This summer the Austrian extreme athlete will put on his space suit and jump from the edge of space. Baumgartner will undertake a stratospheric balloon flight to more than 120,000 feet in the attempt to become the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall (an estimated 690 miles per hour) a feat that will surpass human limits that have existed for more than 50 years. While the completion of the Red Bull Stratos mission is expected to take place later this summer, Felix Baumgartner has already achieved what is anticipated to be a new World Record for vertical speed while in freefall: 364.69 mph. Yeah, faster than a speeding bullet.

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry
(Sundance Selects) For most artists, there’s a line between their art and their life. For Ai Weiwei, art, life, and activism are all part of one continuum, and impossible to separate. What makes this even more remarkable is that Ai is an artist working and living in China where the government does not like to be contradicted or criticized. For the documentary Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, filmmaker Alison Klayman filmed the artist during a two-year plus period leading up to and immediately following his recent arrest. She paints a portrait of the artist as a man who felt a burning desire and obligation to speak out about things that he felt were wrong. Her film is a fascinating and sometimes enraging look at the risks an artist like Ai takes. His willingness to speak out despite severe consequences is inspiring. Now playing.
The Bourne Legacy
(Universal) Matt Damon said that if there was another Bourne film after Ultimatum it would have to be called The Bourne Redundancy. Turns out he’s right. The Bourne Legacy has a been there, done that feeling without any real sense of improvement. It is nice that director Tony Gilroy (who wrote the previous Bournes) employs a steadier camera and less spastic cutting sensibility. Jeremy Renner is good but the new emphasis on genetically engineering agents isn’t used to it’s fullest potential. Basically it’s parkour filmmaking -- all about forward movement with no time for story or character development. Now Playing.

(Warner Brothers) Whether you are eagerly awaiting this year’s presidential election or dreading the onslaught of politicking, this comedy may be just what you need to prep you for the election season. Strictly formula without much to think about, The Campaign serves up Will Ferrell as a conservative candidate and Zach Galifianakis as a liberal one. Predictable hijinks ensue. Now playing.

(Lionsgate) Where do old action stars go? To the Expendables. Number 2 isn’t even out yet and Lionsgate has already announced that Nicolas Cage will join The Expendables 3 and that it is pursuing Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford. The formula -- old and some new action stars on a mission -- feels as tired as some of the stars but this time out a rejuvenated Jean Claude Van Damme signs on for duty. The fun is strictly in seeing these guys pal around and face off, kind of like the action stars rat pack. Now playing.
Looper
(TriStar) Director Rian Johnson and actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt successfully collaborated on the teen noir Brick. They partner again for this action sci-fi tale set in 2042. The premise involves a group of killers known as “loopers” that go back in time to kill people before they become a problem for the killers’ mob bosses. The conundrum: what if you are sent back to kill your young self. It stars Gordon-Levitt as the younger version of Bruce Willis. Could be fun, and with Johnson at the helm and Gordon-Levitt starring it might even be good. Opens September 28.

With the Blu-ray and DVD of Marvel’s The Avengers about to be released, we chat with actor Robert Downey Jr. – who plays Iron Man and his alter ego Tony Stark in the movie.
Robert Downey Jr. Revolt In Style: How long have you known Marvel’s The Avengers was going to happen? Robert Downey Jr: Back in 2007, when I was cast in Iron Man, producer Kevin Feige said to me, “You know what? This is all going to lead to somewhere… We’re going to do something unprecedented in entertainment and we’re going to make an Avengers movie. We’re going to bring all of the franchises together.” RIS: What went through your mind when you heard that news? RDJ: I would get nervous and excited about it, but then I’d get doubtful. By the time Chris [Hemsworth] and Chris [Evans] had launched their individual Super Hero franchises with success and charisma, and by the time we had Mark [Ruffalo] for the Hulk, I realized, ‘Wow, this is really going to happen.’ And I was incredibly excited. RIS: How much did you enjoy sharing the spotlight with the other Super Hero actors of Marvel’s The Avengers? RDJ: It was nice to not really have to carry a movie. I think everyone really, really, really, really is equal in this venture. That’s wonderful. It’s great. You know what? The real die-hard fans, of which I’m an honorary member, have been wondering and imagining if something like The Avengers was ever going to happen. They get their wish this year. RIS: How would you describe Iron Man’s alter ego, Tony Stark, at the start of the movie’s story? RDJ: Tony Stark is open to all possibilities. He has no problem accepting extraordinary happenings. Joining the Avengers team is an act of curiosity; he wants to see what’s happening firsthand. He is beginning to understand that it’s about a group mindset and that ‘we’ is better than ‘I’. RIS: What do you like the most about Tony Stark? What makes him so special to you as a character? RDJ: I like the fact that Tony Stark didn’t really set out to do anything noble. He’s in transition, so there’s something a little more Hans Solo than Luke Skywalker to him. I also like the fact that he can pull off wearing a Black Sabbath T-shirt for the better part of the film! RIS: Did you get to keep any of Tony Stark’s Black Sabbath T-shirts? RDJ: I’ll tell you this: I walked off set with one of the Black Sabbath T-shirts. Do you know where I put it? I’ve mis-located it. It’s like mis-remembering! RIS: What was life like on the set of Marvel’s The Avengers? RDJ: The scope of this movie became so big with all these Super Heroes with all these different needs. Whenever we shot scenes with everyone together, it was hard to not be awestruck by the fact that it had actually been accomplished. RIS: What was your most memorable moment during filming? RDJ: The first time we’re all assembled on the bridge [of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier] together stands out for me. It’s the first time you see the characters react with each other and it’s a really interesting scene in the movie. RIS: What do you think of Super Heroes like Captain America and the actor, Chris Evans, who plays him in the movie? RDJ: I’m extremely fond of Chris Evans and I think he is one of the most underrated actors out there. I watch him and I think to myself, ‘Here is a guy who is wearing a stretchy American flag suit and I absolutely believe him. How is he doing this?’ The other thing I love about Chris is that he’s this tough guy from Boston, but he also is a sensitive artist who really has an opinion. RIS: Do you have many scenes with Chris Evans in the movie? RDJ: Our characters are very connected because [Captain America’s alter ego] Steve Rogers was close with [Tony’s Stark’s father] Howard Stark. If Steve Rogers and Tony Stark’s relationship doesn’t work, then the film doesn’t work. RIS: What do you think of the humor of Marvel’s The Avengers? RDJ: I think Joss Whedon did a great job with the humor. What everybody captured for their character was exactly the right tone. At a certain point, without killing it, you tip your hat and we didn’t take it too seriously because this is essentially a comic book movie, but you buy into the reality of it. I think everyone has their moment in the movie and Joss did a good job of finding everyone’s frequency. RIS: How does it feel to play Iron Man? RDJ: People have been so kind and warm and receptive to the idea of this complicated guy who ends up in extraordinary situations. I’m incredibly grateful for the support. It’s been great, and I look forward to playing him again. Jimi Hendrix Experience - Live At Berkeley [LP] 25.
Tuesday, July 10, Sony Legacy released Jimi Hendrix Experience Live At Berkeley. You can enjoy a complete stream of the album via the SoundCloud player below. The album features the second -- or 10 p.m. -- show recorded by Hendrix, bassist Billy Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell at Berkeley Community Theatre on Saturday, May 30, 1970. The set is presented in its entirety and in its original sequence. Hendrix had filled the massive, nearby Oakland Coliseum the previous year and could have done so again, but he chose a more intimate theater setting instead. All of the available tickets for both shows were quickly snapped up and on the night of the concerts, more than a thousand empty-handed fans were turned away. Tensions between patrons, venue security, police and Hendrix fans without tickets escalated. Hendrix was unaware of the turbulence that surrounded the building. He prefaced the concert by asking his audience to “forget about yesterday or tomorrow. This is our own little world tonight.”

EDITORS CHOICE - LINKIN PARK - LIVING THINGS Genre: Alt/Rock/Rap/Nu-Metal
Now that A Thousand Suns has had two years to sink in, it’s easy to forget that Linkin Park were in the midst of a massive identity crisis at the time that they released it. Nu metal had been dying a slow and painful death for years, with once-popular bands like Korn, Papa Roach, and Staind selling poorly and seeing much less airtime on radio stations. “Linkin Park can be as lyrically or sonically adventurous as we want,” the band’s Mike Shinoda said in these pages last year, after their fourth album A Thousand Suns marked an unlikely metamorphosis from blockbusting nu metal to left-field, electronic, political pop. Such motivations explain the follow-up’s opener, Lost in the Echo, which crams Europop, hip-hop and a big screaming chorus into just over three minutes. Linkin Park finally make good on their promise to return to their roots, “We’re embracing everything that we have done in the past,” Bennington explained, and they’ve even brought some of the stuff that they’ve learnt in recent years along for the ride. Living Things could have benefited from more of such adventure, but they still sound like a band enjoying an unexpected second life. Album favorites include ‘Burn It Down’, ‘I’ll Be Gone,’ ‘Castle of Glass,’ and finally ‘Powerless,’ the 12th and final track, has lock-step beats, soaring harmonies, and synthesizer whispers before Brad Delson’s guitar comes in for the kill. NUDE BEACH – II Genre: Rock
Timeless, Classic, Oldies but Goodies, are all honored descriptions of the past. This is especially true in music. There are only a very select few that have accomplished this status in Rock-n-roll. Now, I’m not saying that Nude Beach has gain this status with their album II, but it does draw immediate comparisons to such legendary idols as Bruce Springsteen, the Ramones, the Clash, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and so on. These modern populist rock protégés produce the same recipe of anthemic, working-class, windows-down-andradio-full-blast rockers that their forefathers did decades before them. And that’s where Nude Beach fits in. This Brooklyn trio, Nude Beach masters the art of the quintessential, classic pop-rock songs. The best moments on II come when Nude Beach delves into a pub rock/New Wave style reminiscent of Elvis Costello and 1970’s punk, breaking away from the trebly guitars and standard beats. ‘Walkin Down My Street,’ with its warm guitar tones and languid feel, is a breath of fresh air, as are ‘Keep It Cool’ and the melancholy, retro ballad ‘Don’t Have to Try.’ It seems, though, that the point of II is as straightforward as its music–Nude Beach makes songs that are unpretentious and easygoing, the kind of songs you’d want to hear in your neighborhood bar while having drinks with friends, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
MINUS THE BEAR – INFINITY OVERHEAD Genre:Alt/Rock

Bristling with guitar acrobatics and infectious melodies, Minus The Bear’s fifth studio full-length album, Infinity Overhead, due August 28, is not only a return to form in direction, instrumentation and creation but also the band’s most aggressive and confident. The veteran Seattle-based fivesome reunited with former member and longtime producer Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Isis, Cursive) to create a guitar-laden 10-track record that is heavy both on technicality and pop songcraft that showcases the band doing what they do best - interesting, guitar-based big sounding rock. “We wanted to branch out on the last record and explore some more musical directions and work with someone we didn’t know,” says guitarist Dave Knudson about the band’s 2010 LP, Omni, produced by Joe Chiccarelli. “That was very educational and eye opening but at the same time we weren’t in our wheel house.” While the smooth and sensual Omni saw the band experimenting with keyboards and a new producer, Infinity Overhead sees the quintet building on their trademark sound and putting the focus back on guitars. And it’s the guitars that really drive this record. The first single, ‘Lonely Gun,’ packs a punch with charging, acrobatic-sounding guitars woven through a pop-friendly chorus. “‘Lonely Gun’ came out of a deep depression,” singer/guitarist Jake Snider told Rolling Stone. “I was thinking about how lonely an unused gun must be, its purpose unfulfilled, like a loveless relationship. The only way to allow its purpose is to hold it – to use it.” Hmmm... ‘nough said.

“We’re getting really close to becoming one unit”-Gavin By Leslie Terhorst Photo by Aaron Goulding So, we’re relaxing at the Switchfoot Bro/Am, stage side in the VIP area, waiting for Switchfoot’s arrival. Their image graces the cover of the most recent Revolt In Style and they’re scheduled to autograph a few hundred covers for their fans before they go on stage & perform. Just before they arrive, we hear interesting music floating thru the crowd. It’s a fusion of roots reggae, new wave ska with Hawaiian influences. It’s coming from the stage. Of course, we had to see who it was, the signing was just going to have to wait. We move to the front of the stage. Brian and I look at each other in shock, Holy crap! We knew right away it was our old friends “The Skains”, and there’s Makua Rothman front and center, ukulele in hand, leading the group into what is their first big show and possible big break. 8,000 screaming fans can’t be wrong. It’s been three years since RIS last visited with The Skains, and it seems this wayward group of Mission Beach surf rats have turned into a bona fide band. Joining forces with big wave surfer, and musician extraordinaire, Makua Rothman; The Skains have taken their music, and their existence, to a whole new level. After a sunset photo shoot for the cover with Makua, we head over to the recording studio to meet up with the boys. After a couple of hours shooting pictures, while they perform a full set of songs, (I hope every song makes it onto their new album due out late fall), we get down to the nittygritty surrounding the new collaboration - Makua Rothman & The Skains.

First things first, we start with clarifying who is still in the band, who’s not, and what changes have been made since our last visit. “We’ve started to focus on our music a lot more. We kicked our bassist out, and brought in Hunter, we (Gavin, myself, Marty, and Hunter) all went to elementary, middle, and high school together.” States Ben. We asked how Makua got involved? Hunter explained, “Makua pretty much raised Gavin, and taught him how to play music, so he’s been keeping an eye on how Gavin’s been doing musically through the years. He saw us developing skills awhile back when we first started, but never really showed any aspirations of wanting to play with us. He’s always been really supportive though. About 6 months ago Makua decided to go full-blown with his music, along side of his surfing, he wanted us to be his band, and to write music with him.” I think it’s time for you to meet the band. “What are your names, ages, and positions?” After some innuendo & laughter about sexual positions....Well, let’s just have the band introduce themselves: “Skyler Lutes–23-Percussion/ Production,” “Marty Janés-19–Lead Guitar,” “Ben Wasserman–19-Drummer/Playboy,” “Hunter Hartmann-19-Bass Guitar/Reverse Cowgirl,” “Gavin Garcia-19–Rhythm Guitar/Backup Vocals,” “Zien Garcia-17–Keys/Sax,” “and the smartest guy in our band...” chimes Makua, “Makua Rothman – ‘nough said!” As you can see they have a bit of a sense of humor. Something I did notice is that they are completely comfortable with each other. For such a young group, you typically don’t see this kind of bond; normally it takes bands
years and years to get this close. But I guess when you’ve grown up together, and family is involved, everything just flows naturally. Especially when it comes to writing music. “We’re getting really close to becoming one unit,” boasts Gavin We wondered who and how, they came up with such a great song set? “It’s a collaboration of all of us,” states Makua. “Everyone in the band make it what it is,” adds Skyler. Ben continued “That was definitely one of the biggest questions when we started this big group together. How are The Skains and Makua going to mesh and fuse into each other? We had several songs already as a band, that now we’ve work-shopped all together as a band, and adapted them so they include all our styles together. We’ve have definitely come together as a unit, instead of two separate entities.” “No matter who writes the songs, we all perform them together, we’re a band.” Interjected Makua. That is one thing I can say fore sure, they are most definitely a solid band. They have a number of gigs lined up; not to mention a stint they just did in Hawaii playing with Legendary Original Black Uhuru Lead Singer Don Carlos. As we were finishing up Makua let a little cat out of the bag by announcing, “We have a lot of huge stuff lined up for The Skains, but I can’t tell them yet.” Damn, I was hoping for an inside scoop, I guess we’ll just have to wait. I foresee a huge future for Makua Rothman and The Skains. Be sure to keep and eye out for them, you know I will. And if you see that they have a gig, show some love and support for our local boys that have done good.

For the past decade he stood fearlessly in front of Monster Waves, Crazed Pro Surfers and a Brutal, Relentless Trainer. Now Makua sets his sights on his next momentous challenge...The Music Industry. ‘Frontman with a Ukulele’ may be his biggest test to date. Born into North Shore Royalty and unfettered access to the best training grounds on the planet have allowed Makua much success as a world class waterman. He is the son of Eddie Rothman, founder of “Da Hui.” His father, along with an impressive list of surf legends, mentored him on the ways of the North Shore & big wave surfing. His size allowed him to dominate on waves much larger than his peers, even as a youth. A big kid growing up, Makua found smaller, less powerful waves more difficult for him to surf. Bigger, more powerful waves, better suited his surfing, and Makua was quick to push the limits at a young age, surfing famous big-wave spots like Sunset Beach and Pipeline. Makua began surfing at the early age of two, but got his first taste of tow-in surfing at the age of 13 when his dad and family friend Darrick Doerner first taught Makua. With Doerner, one of the pioneer’s in tow-in surfing, as his guide, Makua eventually learned the ropes of tow-in surfing and in 2002 won the Billabong XXL Big Wave Challenge Award in one of the most historic big-wave sessions in history. His fearless surfing of the 66 foot wave earned him $66,000, a thousand dollars for every foot. It was the largest wave in the world to be surfed that winter. In 2004, Makua weighed 189 pounds - heavier than most professional surfers. But after rigorously working with trainer and friend Rob Garcia, Makua brought his weight down, & kept it down, to roughly 160 pounds. This weight loss has significantly benefited Makua’s surfing. Still a ranked ASP pro he stays in top physical shape by training in San Diego with Rob G. at The Arena MMA Gym. Rob is the San Diego based strength and conditioning coach and trainer for professional athletes including; boxer Oscar De La Hoya, Pro Surfer Kelly Slater and Pro Skateboarder Pierre-Luc Gagnon. He is regarded as one of the best, if not the best, in his field. In between sessions at local breaks with surfing buddies Nathan Fletcher and Danny Fuller and conditioning training with Rob Garcia, he spends plenty of time in studio with his bandmates ‘The Skains’. After catching his opening set at the Switchfoot Bro-Am we were more than a bit impressed with his stage presence and ability to get the (roughly) 8000 Switchfoot fans up on their feet, applauding and cheering. We had the opportunity to meet up with Makua this past month and ask him some questions. Here’s what we got

Revolt In Style: What’s scarier for you, looking down a sixty foot wave or looking down at 60.000 people? Makua: [He laughs] A sixty foot wave. Playing music in front of people is just a bonus for everything I’ve done in life so far. A wave? That’s life or death... RIS: So what started off your surf career? Tow-in at Jaws? MR: If you really really think about it, there wasn’t any kids doing what I was doing. Me & Ryan Rossen, [tow in partner] were the only ones. Ian Walsh & all those guys...they didn’t think about towing in. I basically pioneered the whole [young kids], charging big waves. We were just in high school! RIS: We saw you open at the Switchfoot Bro Am. Your stage presence was impressive bro. You had that whole crowd going off. What’s that feel like? MR: You got to be confident & make the people happy. They are there to see a show. Anyone can put in a cd & listen to music. But to have someone come out & make the effort to be here? Then they deserve a good show. RIS: What are your goals with your music? MR: I want to send a message first of all - Just jamming you know? it’s about having fun at the beach & have fun with your family, have fun with everybody, just have a good time. My music is to listen to while you’re having a good time. There’s a lot of love songs, there’s some political songs, some feel good songs, a few reggae style songs. If my music blows up I’m gonna be stoked, but for now, I just want to jam. I just want to make people feel good with my music. RIS: Who are some of your influences musically? MR: Bruddah Iz... All the old-timers that played music that meant something. The greats that actually played the instruments. Not just created by someone, sung by someone else & packaged, ya know? RIS: What got you together with the Skains? MR: Those are my nephews. Gavin & Zion Garcia. I actually taught Gavin how to play his first song on the guitar. They’ve been part of my family since they were born. RIS: Let’s talk about the new album. When is it coming out & who’s behind it? MR: The album is coming out soon (later this Fall) & Rick DeVoe Management is behind the release. We’re recording it at the Studio in Point Loma. RIS: What’s that Ukulele worth? MR: Eleven thousand. But wait till they see this cover...I get two more bruddah! [he laughs] RIS: Are you still gonna compete in surfing? MR: Yeah. I still compete. ASP competitor. The Triple Crown, Eddie Akua & all the select events. RIS: So that’s just how it goes? Your people just hook you up to travel the world, surf insane waves & film it all? MR: Sponsors take care of us unreal bruddah, whatever we need they take care of us, they’re unbelievable. I got the best sponsors I could ever ask for. RIS: So do these guys sponsor the music as well? MR: That’s what I want to do is be sponsored as an athlete and a musician. If they sponsor me, they endorse everything that I do. Music, Surf, everything.
RIS: Let’s give ‘em a shout while we’re thinking about it MR: My sponsors are: RVCA, Monster Energy, Oakley Sunglasses, I just made a new pad w/ Astro Deck, Town & Country Surf Shop, JS Surfboards & working on some stuff with the People’s Movement Shoe Company. RIS: What do you think about San Diego? MR: I love San Diego. This is my second home in the spring. I’ve been coming here for the last seven years. This is longest I’ve ever stayed, but San Diego is cool. A lot of nice people down here, a nice chill vibe. RIS: You always train w/ Rob G when you’re here? MR: Always. I do everything with Rob. Strength & conditioning. Any kind of fitness, whatever...surfing boxing, running, Everything full on. RIS: Well thanks for the interview & spending time w/ us. Good luck on the new music. Chester Bennington from Linkin Park and Brandon Boyd from Incubus talks to Revolt In Style about the new tour. Chester Bennington from Linkin Park and Brandon Boyd from Incubus spoke with RIS to talk about the much-anticipated 2012 Honda Civic tour; which starts August 11th and ends here in San Diego on September 10th. The wide-ranging discussion covered many topics, starting with whether or not the bands might join forces onstage together at any point. Boyd said, “At the moment there’s nothing planned in the traditional sense but it really only takes a couple of days of making music and being on tour with new friends to become inspired by each other and each other’s mutual distinctions and idiosyncrasies and stuff and then for that desire to share a little moments to arise so I have a sneaking suspicion that some of us will be sneaking onstage in each other’s sets and I hope that you guys are cool with that.” We also asked both band members about any advice they might give each other’s band the upcoming tour. While Boyd cracked, “Don’t drop the soap,” Bennington offered “You know, we both toured so much over the last 10, 12, 14 years. I can’t keep track of it anymore. I realize that when I noticed that my oldest son has a full beard and is driving a car. I was like, ‘Wow.’ Time just flies by. And so the only advice I could give to any of my friends who’ve been doing this business for this long is ‘keep having fun.’” Bennington continued: “I think that this summer’s going to be really, really exciting and it’s going to be really fun for our friends to come out and see both bands play. And the fact that we’re both known for our live performances and to be able to go out and perform every night with a band that’s as respected as Incubus, and to see them connect with their fans and then go out and do the same with our fans is going to be, it’s going to be really special. And I’m sure that we can both swap stories about some pretty fun moments that we’ve all had on tour. But the great thing about being in a traveling rock band is that any number of things can happen at any time.

I’ve been playing racquetball in Singapore and put a racquet through my face and had to have a plastic surgeon fly in and sew up my lip so that I could play the next day. It was like, you know... but you can’t give people advice for that.” In response to how both bands have succeeded at keeping core members together over all the years, Boyd had this to say in part: “I have an old saying, but it’s a saying that rings true for me all the time. Being in a band is hard. You are essentially traveling in very small steel tubes, confined steel tubes with family members for extended periods of time. Kind of like inhuman periods of time. You love your mom, but how much flight time do you want to spend with her? You know, how long do you want to sit in the car with your dad and your mom and your brothers, you know what I mean? There’s that, but there’s also the understanding that it’s family, and it’s very much a familial thing.” Bennington agreed that it comes down to being akin to a family unit. “I think that within Linkin Park we all have similar aspects of our personality that we share with each other. We all are very driven. We all like to work really hard. We all like to do whatever it takes and be involved in every aspect of what we do. But it takes all of us. And I think that when we learned very early on, like there’s a few guys in the studio working on every song, so it’s a whole record, when you look at the business side of things, or you look at like the marketing side of things, the artistic side of things, and what each member brings collectively to the whole, is worth far more than that. Together, the band is worth far more than each of us is as an individual. And I think that that’s something we learned about our band very early. It’s not just about one guy or two guys or whatever, three guys. It’s about all six of us. And so, having six creative people who are totally different personality-wise around each other all the time, we have to be very realistic about what we expect from each other. And it is a family thing.” Besides bringing together the two headliners that have been looking to play together for some time, the annual rock music showcase is giving fans a chance to win a Linkin Park customized and autographed Honda Si Coupe and CBR250R motorcycle, plus a trip to Los Angeles that includes signed instruments and a visit to a Linkin Park music video shoot.
