EDITOR’S NOTE

S

“THE WAIT IS OVER...”

orry for the time away, my friends. We had a few hurdles to overcome before we could get back to the business of Revolt In Style. Family tragedies, travel and just... life in general caused Leslie & myself to take a brief hiatus. But, that’s all behind us now and we look forward to an incredible 2013.

As you may have heard the Revolt Summer Surf Series is coming back for a seventh season. Looks like this year will actually be bigger & better than last year (if you can believe that) We have listened to our riders and agree that moving the event around during the season makes sense. More riders will be able to compete and the different breaks make for a more challenging RSSS series. This season we will include PB Drive, San Fernando Ct. and OB Pier surfbreaks. We are excited to run the FINALS again on the south side of Crystal Pier during Beach Fest. Take a look on our site for more info.

The RSSS sponsors are beginning to fill in... A couple of BIG sponsors already confirmed are Red Bull and Alpinestars, plus a few that we won’t talk about yet. Red Bull brings a lot to the events, music & athletes. There is still plenty of room for more sponsors, so if you know of, or have a company that wants to help us make surfers smile all summer, then by all means, pass along our info, please. Issue # 78 is jammed full of great content, I’m not sure where to start. Cover feature Ian Walsh’s interview was a tough one to lock down. Ian is constantly on the go and getting him to sit still for an interview is no small feat. Turns out he’s a really good guy that takes his job seriously and pays it forward to the sport he loves so much. The Maverick’s Invitational came and went. Aaron Goulding was out in front of the media frenzy and captured some spectacular images of the competition and the general melee surrounding the event. Congrats go to Peter Mel for capturing the win this season. We also have some great ideas on where to go and what to do this Spring Break. Anyone can go lay on the beach with a bunch of pasty students. What sets you apart and will make you actually remember this year is outlined for you on page 36. I can keep going if you like, or better yet....get in here & check it out. There’s more great interviews, food, music & movie reviews inside waiting for ya. Don’t forget the Issue Release Event at Bar West on Thursday March 14. (look right) Kicks off around five and continues till DJ Mikey Beats stops spinning. Anyone that has been to one of our events can attest - they’re well worth it. Do me a favor. When you get a spare moment...Check out the new REVOLT IN STYLE MOBILE APP & let us know what you think. You can download it for free at www.revoltinstyle.com. Ok, that’s enough. I’m outta here. Glad to be back my friends... Peace, B&L

TASTE MEXICAN SEAFOOD OSCAR’S AT BAR WEST

959 Hornblend St San Diego, 92109 (858) 273-9378

WHAT YOU WANT

The REVOLTINSIDER reveals 3 new nominations for ‘Best Of 2013’ where bold flavors meet the freshest ingredients. If you’re looking for the best mexican food around or a fantastic new sushi bar, either way... we got ya’ covered.

THE BEST TACO AND MARGARITA PAIRING....EVER?

Taco Selection By Oscar’s: Spicy Shrimp, Skirt Steak & Smoked Fish Tacos Rockpile Margarita by Snake Oil Cocktail Co: Blanco tequila, lime juice, agave nectar, cactus puree, sea salt/sugar rim, cactus garnish

Inside the stylish doorway of Bar West (a downtown style nightclub at the beach) there lies what may very well be, the best prepared and most flavorful tacos the RevoltInsider has ever had the pleasure to sample. What started out as a food truck run by two ambitious cooks, Sam & Juan, Oscar’s Mexican Seafood soon turned into one of the most desirable fresh mex destinations in the beach area. After opening their original spot on Turquoise street in North PB they soon realized there was definitely room for some growth. Enter Bar West. The owners were big fans of Oscar’s, so they invited them to serve up their amazing menu at Bar West. The partnership was up and running in a matter of weeks. We stopped in for a test run and were pleasantly surprised by the fresh quality of the food as well as the exceptional flavor. The menu includes a Surf & Turf Taco that will simply blow your mind. The shrimp is cleaned & prepared perfectly, the steak is ridiculous (that’s good). Their Spicy Shrimp Taco is built to satisfy, with large amounts of carefully prepared & seasoned shrimp, crisp cabbage, fresh tomato, cilantro, avocado & onion. Top it off with their signature habanero sauce for an over the top experience (I ate 3). The battered Fish Taco will now permanently reside at the top of my list of favorites (It’s the hint of Dijon mustard in the batter!) & the Fresh Ceviche is something you absolutely have to try. It all just tastes amazing. The secret to their success? Co owner and chef Juan broke it down for us. “You want to know our secret? I’ll tell you...It’s all fresh ingredients. Nothing is frozen, nothing sits in our coolers. We order the food and we use it up. When it’s gone, it’s gone. We use tortillas made fresh daily. Our vegetables, cut fresh daily. We use sustainable local seafoods. Fresh snapper for our fried fish tacos & we use Nebraska Angus beef for the steak tacos. Our sauces are made in house, fresh, daily. We even make our own seasoning salt (aka skeleton powder). It’s all just fresh!” It’s always a good thing when you leave a restaurant with a huge smile on your face. We did. And I challenge you to find better.

COVER FEATURE

WALSH

IAN

Arguably one of the biggest names in the Big Wave Surfing World. At 21 he rode a 70-footer at Jaws and was nominated for Wave of the Year at Billabong XXL Awards. Fast forward a few years & many thousands of airline miles... Here’s a serious athlete in search of that one wave that will top the rest. Always on call, he waits for the next big swell to call him to destinations unknown. This is Walshy. This is the life every surfer wants to live. Read on...

Interview by Brian Terhorst RIS: Name/Rank/Serial number : IW: My name is Ian Walsh & I am not ranked at all - I don’t do too many events. I pretty much spend the year chasing the best waves in the world and the biggest waves in the world. That’s pretty much my year in it’s entirety. Just really sporadic movement around the planet, wherever the waves are the best. RIS: Tough Life. I know you’re a snowboarder too. Been spending time in the mountains this year? IW: I just finished this snowboard trip last week in Jackson hole WY - it was insane. Super deep snow. We had a really good crew that we linked up with & got to sneak off into some really good back country. I rode with Diana Gucci & Mark Carter, and then I rode with Pat Moore the first day I was there, it was really fun - A lot of the snowboarders surf so we have a pretty good silent trade system going on. They all come to Maui & then I’ve been able to sneak off into the mountains with my brothers a couple times during the winter to hook up with them. RIS: How many brothers do you have? IW: I have three younger brothers. Two of them came with me on this last trip. The other one was M.I.A. cause he broke his ribs a few weeks ago RIS: Where did you guys stay? IW: Jackson Hole Mountain Resort right there in the Titans. It was insane, the mountain takes really good care of us - the whole town is super nice. It reminds me a lot of Maui, just without waves - a lot more white, a lot less blue. RIS: Top five wins/awards? IW: That’s hard cause I haven’t been competing too much in the last few years. My biggest achievement in the last few years was being invited into the Eddie Akau event this year. To me that’s like the biggest honor in surfing, so that was a pretty big achievement. I’m still very competitive in contests and stuff but I spend so much more time traveling around, so the biggest wins & achievements are just being at those key days around the world when the waves are the best, because so much time and energy goes into trying to forecast it, figuring out where to be… on what day… what tides…what winds….what swell directions. When it all comes together it feels like you won a contest. RIS: So how does that work? You’re just on call all the time? IW: I’m on call all year long. I live like a meteorologist, just studying the weather maps all day long, every day. Just trying to figure out the best waves on any given day during the year. Kinda bounce information off a few other surfers that do the same thing that I do.

WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM  17

And then, just rally. When it’s on, you just drop everything on a dime & bail. Like right now I’m walking around in Santa Monica, but the waves might be good in Morrocco, like they were a couple days ago, I might just pack up all my gear & just leave. But as I was watching that swell in Morrocco the winds & the weather just kinda changed…looks like it’s just gonna be a big storm insetad of really good surf. Everything got canceled. But if it was good I would probably be heading to LAX right now. RIS: So basically that’s your lifestyle… The business of surfing. That’s what your sponsors finance? IW: Basicly. It’s weird to consider that a job, but it is my job and something that I still take seriously. It’s something that I’m super passionate about. I feel really fortunate to be able to do it, cause there’s not too many people in that type of a situation, so I really want to take advantage of it. I definitely have a hard time sitting still, which is a big problem for me. So you couple that with the ability to go anywhere in the world & I just don’t stop moving all year. Pretty sporadic. RIS: List of sponsors IW: Red Bull, Fox, Dakine, Lost Surfboards, Christensen Big Wave Boards for Jaws, Up Country Fitness on Maui, Progenics USA, Future Fins RIS: Top five perfect things you travel with (quiver, gear, personal items, electronics) IW: Passport, iPod, Laptop, bunch different currency (always end up in some weird situation where you don’t have money & you need some cash on ya) Surfboards - The worst thing ever to travel with are surfboards…kinda a catch 22 cause it’s also the best thing when the waves are good. RIS: Who shapes your boards at Lost? IW: Matt Biolos shapes all my boards. I usually ride a 6’0” / 18 & I’ve been liking the Driver Rocker. It feels good RIS: When you travel to all these different destinations, do you have a crew that rolls with you or are you alone? IW: I usually have a photog and video guy with me for most trips. It’s always kinda different, it’s never the same guys. Different photographers & filmers & surfers, It’s kinda nice. It’d be fun to travel with the same guys all over the world, but it keeps it fresh, having new crews at each trip. RIS: Do you have a favorite photographer? IW: Justin Clarke from Maui for a few years. That was pretty fun having someone I grew up with my whole life & being thrown into the same schedule as me for a couple of years all around the world. Pretty fun. RIS: Top five songs/bands on iPhone IW: I have the heaviest, most diverse music selection. I have like 15,000 songs. As random as you can get. From 80’s… to rap… to country… to Metalica & everything in-between. I’m a big fan of music & I like it all. RIS: Next competition. IW: I put together an event with Red Bull called the Red Bull Jaws event. Basicly a big wave event at Jaws on the biggest day of the winter. We’ve had from Dec. 8 till March 15 to run…but we haven’t had quite a big enough swell yet, so if it doesn’t run this year we’re bona roll it over to next year & try to nail the biggest day of the year. The window is still open so I’m watching every weather system heading towards Hawaii. It’s an invitational - 21 guys. Google Red Bull Jaws - it’ll give you the whole athlete roster.

18 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

RIS: Biggest wave to date IW: I had one that measured out to 70 feet a few years ago at Jaws. That’s the tallest to date. We’ve been paddling into big waves a lot lately. Trying to get into those waves we used to tow into. We’re getting pretty close. RIS: Favorite wave? IW: Depends on the wave. Jaws for big waves. For small waves I really like Honolua Bay. A few zones in Indonesia & Tahiti that I keep going back to year after year. I don’t have an exact favorite favorite, many... and one in Africa that I won’t miss if it’s on. RIS: Any one crazy story in particular that stands out from your travels around the world? IW: Yeah, if you spend 10 months a year traveling you’re gonna experience the ups & downs. There’s a million good things that have happened & there’s a few bad things - but nothing stands out too bad. I mean, I’ve had my gear stolen, I’ve had car accidents & emergency landings. I’ve been lost at sea, I almost sank in a boat 110 miles out in the ocean. But there’s good things that you can take from every bad situation. That’s the fun of traveling….one thing just rolls into the next adventure. RIS: Biggest / best moment in your career so far? IW: I dunno. That’s pretty hard to boil it all down into one defining moment… It’s just surfing, and finding what I love to do. I’m pretty fortunate to be sitting in the seat I’m in now. Having the ability to be able to keep going year after year & push myself as far as I want to go in every type of surf. RIS: Any causes or foundations you work with? IW: I have a little kids event called the Menehune Mayhem on Maui. This’ll be our tenth year. It’s a free event for boys & girls 17 & under to surf in. Gives the kids on Maui something to do & having an event to look forward to each year. It’s set up exactly how I would have wanted an event when I was their age. That’s the idea & the way it was formed. It just snowballed into an event that is something that I’m really proud to be a part of & help with each year. Academics are really important for kids to have even if they are really good athletes. So that’s something I’m trying to help instill in them from a really young age. Give them the opportunities to go to college as well, even if they grew up in places without much money, so I’m trying to help build a fund for that.

RIS: Who/What inspires you? Who makes you ride better? IW: I think I can draw a lot of inspiration out of other sports. Watching what Travis Rice and a lot of these guys are doing snowboarding….I draw a lot of inspiration from that. Within the surfing world, obviously growing up, looking up to Shane Dorian, seeing what he does in all of our sessions around the world in big waves is super inspiring to me too. RIS: Do you travel a lot with Shane? IW: Yeah, I spend a lot of the year with Shane if the waves are really big. Over the last six or seven years I’ve spent a lot of time with him… doing the same filming projects together. Just blows me away… every time I’m with the guy (laughs). RIS: What’s next? IW: Waiting to see what the waves are doing this week. Taking it day by day. My next big project is running the Menehune event on Maui & then moving right into my summer schedule as soon as winter’s done. I’ll be straight off to Patagonia the minute the waves stop in Hawaii to do a project for Red Bull. Then I go to Fiji & Indonesia. Basicly just playing ping-pong throughout airports around the world, wherever the waves are good. RIS: Any films in the works? IW: Yeah, I have two projects with Red Bull. One offs. The big stuff I have to keep under wraps till we get the whole project green lit, then we’ll be moving on it for the next couple of years RIS: Any words of wisdom for up and coming surfers wishing to follow in your footsteps? IW: I always grew up with the same philosophy: It’s not how good you are, it’s about how good you want to be. That’s it in the simplest form. If you want to do something that bad… you’ll make it happen. Work hard for it. RIS: How can we follow you online? IW: All the majors… Instagram & Twitter is Ianwalsh4. Facebook is realianwalsh RIS: I really appreciate you taking the time to talk with us. You’re certainly living the life bruddah. IW: Yeah, (laughs) Definitely not bad. There much worse things I can be doing with my time….that’s for sure. No worries….thanks bud.

ADRENALINE

AARON

GOLD

...don’t be fooled by his mellow behavior. He stands strong and fearless amongst his ‘Hellman’ peers. Two wave hold downs are the norm these days...

Questions and photography by Aaron Goulding

R

aised on the North shore of Oahu, Aaron Gold grew up surfing large waves. He’s well known for his surfboard shaping abilities in Hawaii, but he’s now becoming a contender in the sport of big wave surfing. Charging huge waves like Jaws in Maui, Waimea Bay in Hawaii, Cortes Bank, and Mavericks, California, just to name a few. Aaron is happily married with a new addition to the family Avaleah. I recently had a chance to catch up with Aaron on a trip out to Cortes Bank. He’s a super humble and friendly guy, but don’t be fooled by his mellow behavior. He stands strong and fearless amongst his “Hellman” peers. Two wave hold downs are the norm these days, but Aaron is confident in his strength, endurance and training. Unfortunately, as a new comer to Maverick’s surf scene, there was no room for him to compete in this year’s Invitational. Watching him surf Cortes bank first hand, I am confident that he would have been amongst the finalists!

RIS: How old were you when you began surfing and when did you get the desire to surf really monstrous waves? AG: I first started surfing at around the age of 3 or 4. Growing up in Hawaii, surrounded by water, we tend to get started early. My passion for surfing large waves started around the age of 12 or 13. It was my first time surfing Waimea with my Dad Glenn and Uncle Bruce, the waves were 10 to 12 foot and just starting to brake on the boil. I basically sat there for 2 hours trying to shoulder hop one. When I got the word it was time to go, I knew I couldn’t just paddle in. I had to get at least one. I ended up taking off on a 10ft, foamy double up that went completely square, got pitched with the lip, and got totally hammered. At some point in between praying for my life and coming to terms that this was how I was going out, the wave let me up. I’ll never forget that feeling, something snapped in me, I had walked the line, and I have been hooked ever since. RIS: How long have you been shaping surfboards and who’s your inspiration? AG: I started shaping boards around the same time I started surfing larger waves. My Dad shaped boards and was one of John Carpers first team riders. They would work on boards together and then my dad would make my boards like his but smaller. Some of my favorite memories of my dad were watching him shape and the smell of the glassing shack. I eventually decided to give it a try, and have done so off and on since that time.

20 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

RIS: Do you shape your own boards? AG- Yes, for about the last 5 years I have been building most all my boards, shaping, glassing, and sanding, the whole deal. I really enjoy it. RIS: Do you still like to surf smaller waves or is that boring for you now? AG- Surfing is special to me weather it’s big or small. The beauty of surfing is that there are so many feelings, each one unique in its own way, that’s what keeps you coming back. I love the feeling of throwing down a big turn or doing a big air just as much as I love catching a bomb, or getting a huge barrel. To me it’s about the challenge, and if you are pushing yourself personally and having fun doing it, then it doesn’t matter whether it’s big or small. RIS: What was your most memorable surf session out at Jaws? AG- My most memorable session at Jaws so far was my first one. It was the one Dave Wassel got the Billabong XXL award on. It was 25-30 foot.. Big, mean and windy. I didn’t get the best waves out there that day. In fact, I got the two worst beatings I’ve had so far, but it was all new, and a new beginning of things to come. I’ll always remember it. RIS: Considering the downgrade in size at The Mavericks Invitational do you think they should have cancelled or continued the event and why? AG- As a big wave specialist we always lean for it to be huge, so we can challenge and push ourselves. None the less the conditions were highly contestable, and each surfer has the same opportunity to win. I think all in all, the event was a success. It may not have been as big as we had hoped, but ultimately the contest directors weighed it out and made the call. Everybody had a good time, some great rides went down, and the sport of big wave surfing got some well deserved exposure. RIS: What is the biggest wave you have ever ridden? AG- I get that a lot. The truth is… I’m not actually sure. If I had to guess I would say somewhere between 25 to 35 feet 50-70 foot face. Sometimes it’s not always the biggest wave that’s the gnarliest, and so far the gnarliest wave I have surfed is Jaws. RIS: What sort of cross training are you involved in or do you just stay in shape by chasing large surf around the world? AG- Training is definitely super important when surfing big waves. We are only as good as our preparation, and being prepared for the unexpected is where training comes in. I do a combination of running in soft sand to build stamina/cardio. I swim varying strokes to change my breathing pattern/ cardio, and I skin dive to work on holding my breath. All above, combined with surfing regularly, help me to stay prepared. RIS:What tips would you give to someone inspired by you to surf large waves? AG- My best advice would be to take it slow, work your way into it. Know your abilities, and be familiar with the spot you want to surf. Spend the time watching, preparing, and checking it out when it’s flat, (bottom, currents, winds, etc.) And lastly, if possible, ask the locals. You’d be surprised. More often than not, they’re willing to share knowledge with you... if you are respectful. RIS: Besides your wife and toddler, who supports your addiction for chasing down large surf? AG- At the moment my only sponsor is RLM wetsuits Japan. I am currently seeking new sponsorships. Aside from this I am surrounded by a great group of friends at the Mission North Shore, and my big wave rambling partners Ben Wilkinson, and Kohl Christensen. And last but not least the Lord Jesus Christ, who is always watching out for me.

MAVERICKS INVITATIONAL TOTALLY WEIRD, TOTALLY AWESOME By Brian Terhorst & Aaron Goulding Photos by Aaron Goulding “THEY’RE RUNNING AT MAVERICKS TOMORROW... I HAVE A SEAT FOR YOU ON OUR BOAT.... ONLY 1 LEFT. ARE YOU IN? I NEED AN ANSWER RIGHT NOW!”

T

his was the general idea of the phone call to Aaron Goulding as he drove home on I-5 the evening before the event. After hearing conflicting reports that, first the swell was lining up perfectly & then another stating the swell was dropping, he had little choice but to roll the dice and decide... on the spot. A credit card was produced....numbers were recited over the phone... and his seat was secured on a private charter. After a long night of driving north, and on what can only be described as a gorgeous Northern California Sunday, 24 elite big wave watermen gathered at Half Moon Bay, CA to compete. Aaron Goulding had made his boat on time. He was there in the thick of it to capture some beautiful photography and soak in all that goes on in this unconventional surfing competition we simply call...Mavericks. The Mavericks Invitational is one of the world’s premiere big wave surfing events. The one-day, invitation-only surfing competition takes place at the most celebrated and infamous big wave spot on the West Coast of the United States. Unfortunately, the day of the event, the waves only got to between 20-25-feet, about half the height of the epic swell of 2010. The decision to run the event will be debated for some time. There wre pros and cons to running it as well as to wait for a bigger swell. One thing for sure....this year was the strangest Mavs to date.

Cliffs overlooking the event were closed & heavily patrolled by law enforcement. The beach area in front of event was completely off limits as well, due to a rogue wave washing spectators off the beach in 2010. This didn’t stop fans of big wave surfing from flocking from all across the country (and in some cases all across the world) to see the show.

For the first time, event sponsors GoPro, Sierra Nevada and several other vendors provided a public viewing area / festival behind the Oceano Hotel (about a mile from Mavericks). Surfing fans had ‘zero’ view of the actual event.... the surfing action was shown on a a massive jumbo-tron. Tickets sold-out at 9 a.m. when the crowd reached 12,000. All one needs to do is look at any panoramic shot from the cliff or the water to see how challenging it would be to captain a boat in that channel on the day of the contest. It was truly a flotilla that included: Coast Guard Cutters & Lifeguard zodiacs, Sheriffs’ boats, Fish & Game boats and numerous media boats with cameramen & women overflowing the decks. The private boats, yachts and personal watercraft filled in any available space between the larger vessels. The boats in the channel don’t anchor because the anchorage is too dangerous and with the swell, wind, tide, and currents -- anchoring would create even more danger. Rob Brown’s Boat (positioned directly in front of the peak) was covering the event for the Jumbotron & Webcast. This boat was generally seen as a cockblock by all other media outlets as they seemed to post up wherever they wanted regardless of the other organizations covering the event. Gnarly boat captains were constantly screaming at him and swearing at each other (even yelling at the captain of the Coast Guard cutter). A spotter on the cliff was radioing approaching sets of waves to the judges. The judges with foreknowledge of coming waves could direct their boat captain to the perfect location in the channel for optimal viewing. To say this was an “orchestrated dance of chaos and danger” would be putting it mildly.

The final heat was stacked, with half of the six veteran Mavericks surfers hailing from Santa Cruz: Shawn Dollar, Zach Wormhoudt, and Peter Mel. The other three surfers, Mark Healey, Alex Martins and of course, the legendary, Greg Long. For the second time in a row, before the horn blew to start the heat, in a classy move, all six competitors agreed to split the prize money regardless of who won the event. But, after the 50-minute final was up, one man came out on top, and that of course, was Peter Mel. He is a man whose career has been defined by more than a decade of dedication to Mavericks as one of it’s original surfers, an ambassador, a competitor and now…..

CHRIS WARING What If’s & Whatevers By Joe Foster

Chris Waring has been on a tear lately. He just won the APSS surfing series over the likes of Torrey Meister, Chris Ward and many others. He recently went over to China to represent America and was also invited to compete in the ISA World championship in Indonesia last year. His style is pure power. He has one of the nicest wrap around cutbacks out there and the smoothest backside style your ever gonna see. He can do all the airs and new schools moves, but would rather bury the rail and send buckets flying. He looks like he’s hungry again this year so look for him to show up and blow up at a beach or competition near you.

ANGELA OSCHMANN Questions and Photos by Aaron Goulding

About 3 years ago, I was at my usual shore break spot here in San Diego when out of nowhere, appears this tall blonde girl on the beach in a wetsuit holding fins. I must admit she caught my attention... it’s pretty unusual to see women in the ocean during the winter, let alone a female bodysurfer!? I watched as she entered the water, just up the beach from me. She swam out into the lineup with authority. I was intrigued. A set came and she paddled vigorously, hooting and screaming as she dropped in on this gaping tube. It was then that I knew I had to meet this girl. Angela Oschmann is one of the most stoked human beings I know. She loves the ocean and plays in the water like it’s her first time ever. Her stoke is contagious! Angela works at a pre-school a few days a week. She loves children, but when she gets off work, her priority is the shore-break. Over the last few years I’ve watched her progress to much larger and heavier surf, her style is much cleaner and even more confident. Ms. Oschmann has become an artist at what she does and you can hear her stoke from far away. She is the new “Gidget” except her name is Angie ‘O! Check out her featured spot in the upcoming Misfits Pictures film titled ‘What the Sea Gives Me’. RIS: When did you first fall in love with the ocean and at what point did you decide you wanted to really get into this? AO: My parents have been taking me to the beach to stick my toes in the sand since I was a toddler, hahaa! With that being said, as soon as I could coordinate my timing, I was bodyboarding. The summer of ’07... at a local shore break, is when my passion shifted to bodysurfing.

AO: To begin, The Wedge is a completely different shape and starts off in an odd direction than most waves. With that being said, the difficulty of learning how to bodysurf at this Newport spot, is getting acclimated to these dynamics. The power there ranges from moderate to INSANE!!!

RIS: What if you didn’t have to work? Would you travel the world bodysurfing? AO: Did you just read my mind? I would love to travel the world bodysurfing! I have been finding that bodysurfing is about so much more than the sport itself. It’s about finding culture, people, smiles, moments of bliss and eternal connection.

RIS:You recently filmed for a part in the new movie, What the Sea Gives me, by Misfit Pictures. Can you tell us a little bit about your part in the movie? AO: My part in the film is a bodysurfette and the joy that I receive from playing in the ocean. I try to share the tangible elements of the sport as well as the sensations perceived. I, along with other individuals involved in this film, are so invested in our great waters; and that makes me apart of their family in a way.

RIS: Do your colleagues and students know that you rip in the ocean? AO: Well, my students are 3-5 years of age, and that means we’re focused on their development. My colleagues, on the other hand, know how much I love to bodysurf. They’ve seen my short bodysurfing video s & see I’ve got experience. I try not to be obnoxious with my extra-curricular activities, because that’s not a secret the sea urges me to share.

RIS: What are your plans for the future regarding bodysurfing? AO: I plan to keep on bodysurfing ‘til my heart’s content! That means attending Stokefests, Handplane Hoedowns, Paipo riding events and other volunteer activities like H20 Trash Patrol. Honestly, I would love to represent an organization that aims to share the beauty and educate about the preciousness of our many waters.

RIS: Do you currently compete? If not, do you have plans to? AO: Last year, I competed in the World Bodysurfing Championships advancing to the semi-finals. Most definitely you’ll find me competing there again, hootin’ and hollerin’ just like last year!

RIS What would you say to youngsters interested in learning how to bodysurf? Is there anything they should know first? AO: To anyone who wants to bodysurf, have fun! – that’s the point. Now, being serious, I advise you to observe, ask questions....and most importantly, heed your intuition. Find out more www.facebook.com/angela.oschmann and check me out on the big screen in What The Sea Gives Me! SHAKA!!!

RIS: How would you campare the power and difficulty of The Wedge to shore break found here in San Diego?

ADRENALINE RECORDS, TRAGEDIES & TRIUMPHS Photos Courtesy of ESPN Images Nowhere else in the action sports world are limits surpassed and boundaries destroyed more often than at the X Games. This you can count on. One week, an athlete shows what was once thought impossible, the next, after the X Games have concluded, a whole new dimension exists. Example: 23-year-old Elena Hight landed a double backside alley-oop rodeo during the SuperPipe final. No one -- men included -- had ever performed it during a competition. Hight landed the trick flawlessly on her final jump, breaking a barrier not just for women but men as well. On the same night Hight made history, Henrik Harlaut, a 21-year-old from Sweden, landed a trick not even the sport’s most technical coaches thought possible: a nose butter triple cork 1620, (looks even more spectacular than it sounds) What’s better? He had never even tried it until he used it to capture his first X Games gold medal. We saw two double gold medalists in snowmobiler Levi LaVallee (Freestyle and Speed and Style) and snowboarder Louis-Felix Paradis (Real Snow and Street). We saw dreams come true - like: Nick Goepper, 18, who won gold in Ski Slopestyle or a father winning for his daughter, as in David Wise’s Ski SuperPipe title defense. For every triumphant moment, however, we were reminded that glory does not come without risk at the X Games. Caleb Moore’s crash in Snowmobile Freestyle cast a sobering haze over the weekend, one that was compounded by Rose Battersby’s lumbar spine fracture in Ski Slopestyle practice. As with any worthy sporting event, we also saw inspiring comebacks, a la above-the-knee amputee Mike Schultz’s win in Snowmobile SnoCross Adaptive, when Schultz fought back from a first-lap crash and passed all seven of his rivals to win his second straight gold medal. Snowboard Slopestyle queen Jamie Anderson and SuperPipe king Shaun White reminded us that sure things still can thrive at the X Games, while Norwegian teenager Tiril Sjåstad Christiansen’s upset of three-time defending Ski Slopestyle champ Kaya Turski made the case for unpredictability, as well.

After six straight years of coming to the X Games and dominating the competition, you might think that winning would get rather boring for Shaun White. The medal ceremonies, the interviews, the news conferences, the pictures, the autographs -- it would all just seem rather tedious year after year after year. In the last event of X Games Aspen, he posted the two highest scores of the night -- a 95 and a 98 -and his 24-foot, 1-inch air in his second run was the highest for an X Games snowboarder. Not only was it White’s sixth straight gold in the event, but it was his 23rd overall X Games medal and his 15th gold, also a record. But as great as the moment was, White knows his work has just begun. The Olympics are a little more than a year away and White fully expects that many of the tricks he performed in the SuperPipe in January will be outdated come Sochi.

“Six is a lot. That’s a big number,” he said. “I’m going to be even more uncomfortable next year going for the seventh. It’s a humbling title to hold. I’m proud of what I’ve done.”

GIRL POWER 2013 We saw a number of records broken and barriers broken in women’s sports at X Games. Norwegian teenager Tiril Sjåstad Christiansen upset three-time defending Ski Slopestyle champ Kaya Turski & made the case for unpredictability at the X Games. Elena Hight landed a double backside alley-oop rodeo during the SuperPipe final. No one... men included... had ever performed it during a competition... breaking a barrier not just for women but men as well.

“As women,” Hight said, “we are a step behind them (dudes) but totally capable.” When it came time to decide the gold medalist, the X Games judges awarded two-time defending champion Kelly Clark a higher score than Hight. The crowd booed. It was the second straight year Hight claimed silver to Clark’s gold. But as with any true innovator, the number next to her name mattered less than the feat itself. And not to forget, Snowboard Slopestyle queen Jamie Anderson, riding in her ninth X Games, scored her second straight Snowboard Slopestyle Women’s gold medal.

The 2013 Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour

starts off with a bang in Mexico City on March 8. Defending champion Levi Sherwood of New Zealand will return to one of the world’s most spectacular venues where his Freestyle- Motocross (FMX) career all began with a victory in his first international event in 2009. Levi Sherwood was the winner in his first Red Bull X-Fighters event in the world’s biggest bull fighting arena in Mexico City in 2009. The World Tour Champion will be looking for more glory on Friday March 8 when the 2013 season opens once again in the Mexican capital. Sherwood won three stops last year and is ready to defend his title against the world’s best Freestyle Motocross riders in the new season that is going truly global in its 13th year with six stops on four continents.

Levi on the cover of Revolt In Style in 2010 Back on top after a two-year hiatus, 30-yearold Levi LaVallee claimed two gold medals at the 2013 Winter X Games in Aspen. The snowmobile events of X Games were partially overshadowed by particularly brutal crashes that took out his toughest rivals and cost the life of young Caleb Moore. LaVallee, who won gold medals in Freestyle and Speed & Style was supposed to compete in SnoCross and Best Trick but had to withdraw from the competition due to an injury.

UNFORGETTABLE SNOWBOARDING AT RED BULL ULTRA NATURAL

“Super bummed... I tore a muscle in my back and after trying to ride SnoX practice I will not be able to continue on,” LaVallee wrote on his Facebook page. “The Doc said if I push it, I could end up in a bad place.” Once back at home in Minnesota, LaVallee had MRIs & has confirmed that he will be sitting out for the rest of the 2013 race season. LaVallee now has nine X Games medals overall.

DESTINATION

SPRING RESORT REPORT WHY LEAVE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA? Spring skiing and snowboarding in Southern California is nothing short of surreal. In March April & even into May, heavy parkas and goggles give way to bare arms, sunglasses and sunblock. The atmosphere at the resorts lightens up with the weather and sun worshippers flock to the San Berdoo mountain range to collect their fair share of snow time. The days start a bit earlier and usually wrap up as the snow begins to get sloppy. This just means Happy Hour kicks off at most every resort bar a bit earlier. The scene attracts beautiful tan faces and pale arms, they line the slopeside bars in droves. But the real attraction is top-notch facilities, epic terrain and easy access. It’s no secret why SoCal’s snowboarders and skiers make Bear Mountain Resorts and Mountain High their choice... a two hour drive is really all you need to reach world class riding.

BEAR MOUNTAIN Mountain Specs: 12 Total Mountain Lifts 2 High Speed Quad Chairs 1 Quad Chair 2 Triple Chairs 4 Double Chairs 3 Moving Carpet Surface Lifts The Park: In-ground Superpipe Length: 580 Feet In-ground Standard Halfpipe Length: 400 Feet Multi skill level jumps and jibs all over the mountain Terrain Difficulty: 15% Beginner 15% Low Intermediate 40% Intermediate 30% Advanced Longest Run: 1.5 miles (Geronimo/Easy Street)

Big Bear Mountain Resorts offers guests a unique opportunity to experience two distinct winter resorts, each with its own personality and attributes, for the price of one. A single lift ticket provides access to both Snow Summit and Bear Mountain which are located just two miles apart, and connected via a free inter-resort express shuttle service. Each resort offers a variety of diverse terrain providing skiers and snowboarders with a combined 438 developed acres, 26 lifts (including 4 high-speed detachable quads) and more than 55 runs. Snow Summit offers a traditional alpine atmosphere with a great deal of intermediate terrain and mainstream cruising for skiers and snowboarders. Bear Mountain offers a youthful environment that attracts skiers and snowboarders from around the world.

RED BULL PLAZA

Big Bear Mountain Resorts has unveiled its latest and most progressive snow park feature, the Red Bull Plaza, at Bear Mountain. Influenced by street-style skateboarding and snow boarding, the unique features in the Red Bull Plaza are modeled after structures found in common city-settings such as shopping malls, schools or town centers, complete with street lamps, chain-link fences and hardscaping. Secluded off Chair 9 in the “Street Scene,” the Red Bull Plaza features a 30’ marble ledge, two 20’ concrete rails, three ledges, two banks, a kink building wall, building wall with a ledge attachment, four stair sets, two down rails, bleacher box, planter ledge box and a down-flat-down ledge wall, some of which were included at Hot Dawgz and Handrails 2011. Clayton Shoemaker, Director of Youth Marketing and Park Development for Big Bear Mountain Resorts and the creative mind behind the Red Bull Plaza, breaks down the new addition:

“It’s all about the entire experience. When you arrive at the Red Bull Plaza you will immediately realize that you have never snowboarded or skied through a run like this anywhere. It’s not one feature but a whole run with multiple features that flow together and give riders opportunities to create lines that they’ve never seen in a resort’s terrain park before.” 34 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

East Resort: The East Resort boasts the longest trails for Southern California skiing serviced by a single high-speed quad. It is also known for its thrilling moguls, gladed tree skiing areas and breathtaking views of the Mojave Desert. Rising as high as 8,200 feet, the East Resort offers traditional skiers and snowboarders a true alpine experience without having to journey far from home.

Mountain High is home to not one, but three distinguished resorts. Even though they are only a mile apart, they offer stunning differences in both terrain and atmosphere. West Resort: The West Resort is filled with a seemingly endless assortment of technical trails and skillfully-designed terrain features for progressive riders and skiers of all skill levels. It is the most youthful of the three areas and the site of many on-hill contests, promotions and live performances. It is also Southern California’s only local resort open five nights-a-week peak season. North Resort: Mountain High’s new North Resort offers 70 acres of beginner terrain perfect for families and introductory skiers. It is also home to the North Pole Tubing Park, the largest tubing area in Southern California. Formerly Ski Sunrise, Mountain High North is located directly across from the West Resort and operates Friday through Sunday peak season.

MOUNTAIN HIGH’S BAGJUMP

The only freestyle air bag of its kind in Southern California. Take your riding to the next level by practicing on this huge, inflatable landing pad before heading to the snow. The BAGJUMP can be used by anyone from beginners to professionals, for Olympic level training or just for recreation. The great feeling of “landing on a cloud” can be experienced with skis or snowboards, and for you this means a great way to improve your technique. Open Saturdays and Sundays (business and weather permitting). Tickets may be purchased at the BAGJUMP located at the base of West, just above the Playground. HELMETS ARE REQUIRED. Each participant must fill out a liability release. Proof of age is required (photo ID) and guests under 18 years of age will require a parent’s signature.

TOP RESORT TIPS

Get there early for premium parking. Arrive too late in the day and you may find yourself hoofing it from the overflow lots. That sucks. Front row rocks!

Ride mid week! Avoid the weekends, so the crowds are smaller & lines are shorter. Ride top to bottom non-stop or enjoy the park sans kook sticks.

Keep beverages buried in the snow for optimal sipping temperature. Nice! REMEMBER: Drink responsibly!

NIGHTLIFE

LATE

DAY / NIGHT

What do the Black Keys’ drummer Patrick Carney and Red Bull Thre3Style San Diego winner Chris Cutz have in common? Both aren’t fans of Justin Bieber.

SAKI SAMPLER

Moonstone Saki Sampler Tower Great way to try a variety of saki flavors without breaking the bank. Rasberry, Asian Pear, Coconut Lemmon Grass are just a few of the selections you can choose from at KATO SUSHI Only runs ya’ 9 bucks during Happy Hour.

COCKTAIL

Sandia Sour Spring Break is always a great escape from reality. Time to get loose, take chances & make new friends. While it’s sunny at the beach, it’s still March - you may need a little warming up. Don’t be afraid of the bite friends. This will blow your mind! The Sandia Sour is just one of the many signature SNAKE OIL COCKTAIL CO. creations available at BAR WEST INGREDIENTS 1.5 oz Blanco Tequila, 2 oz watermelon/jalapeno puree, .5 oz agave nectar

Name: Chris Cutz Twitter:@chriscutz Years DJing: 14 Location: San Diego First album/song you ever bought? ‘Songs In The Key Of Life’ by Stevie Wonder. Vinyl vs. Digital? I’m most definitely a vinyl lover at heart. But to stay current in this DJ game, you have to go digital. Best song to get the crowd moving? ‘Shout’ by The Isley Brothers. What’s the ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ of 2013? The year is still young, but right now the jam seems to be ‘All Gold Everything’ by Trinidad James. When do you play your ‘Don’t Stop Believing’? (Middle, Towards the end, the very end) It can honestly be at any of those times to be real with you. Most of the time, I would say I play it towards the end.

38 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

How important is it to know the regions musical tastes? Very important! No doubt about it. You always need to know what songs are big in other regions of the country. For example, the hottest song in San Diego might not even be played on the radio in New York. You wouldn’t want to drop that song in New York clubs because no one would get it, you feel me?! How many records/mp3s do you own? Lets just say... a lot. Dream venue? I don’t really have a dream venue. Any time I get paid to do what I love is a blessing – it doesn’t matter the venue. To play on a worldwide level would be a dream of mine, for sure. How do you start your set? It really depends on the night and where I’m playing. If the place is packed and people are ready to party, then I’m keeping it hype all night. Dream collaboration? I would love to work with legends like Prince, Stevie Wonder, or Chaka Khan. On a hip-hop trip, I would enjoy to collaborate with Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Drake.

Most annoying song request? Anything by Justin Bieber. What was the riskiest mash up you’ve ever done? It’s been so long since the mash up thing was relevant tha t I don’t really remember. Now that I think about it, I do recall throwing Jay Z’s ‘99 Problems’ over AC/DC’s ‘Back In Black’ Instrumental. I wouldn’t call that risky though.

INSTRUCTION Muddle: lemon, lime, mint. Add Tequila, puree & nectar. Shake it like the beast you think you are. Pour into martini glass w/ sweet & sour salt rim. Garnish w/ candied jalapeno & watermelon wedge

What’s your guilty favorite song? I don’t know if I have a particular song that stands out, but I am a fan of all things disco. I know some people find it cheesy but I love it. Do you know how to play any instruments? I do know how to play a little piano, but nothing serious.

THRUSTERS LOUNGE 4633 Mission Blvd. San Diego, CA 92109 858-483-63 34 Winter Hours 5pm - 2am

The craft drink movement has followed an ubiquitous slow food movement and despite various cliché terms and macro breweries trying to seem “local” there is a net gain for the food and drink community. In contrast to the declining domestic beer market, the craft beer movement is growing at a 11% annual clip. This is impressive considering the Craft Beer percentage of the overall beer market is only 7%. There are 62 micro breweries in San Diego, arguably the most in the country, but Portland likely holds the lead. However, only 20% of San Diego’s draft handles are from these microbreweries, compared to over 50% for Portland. Put a bird on it.

THE CRAFT

“In 1999 when I opened Thrusters, We rocked flannels and pushed Humbolt Hemp Nectar Ale onto the taps. It didn’t move... Today, seems both flannels and brown craft ales are in style, which is rad.”

Thrusters Lounge is in its 14th year of business, and like all things, has grown up (a bit). Stone IPA outsold their light beers in 2012, that should tell you something about the evolving tastes and demographic of the beach area. (PBR tall boys still strong in top 3 however. Thrusters hopes to lead the way with the largest beach area selection of draft microbrews. They now carry 44 beers on draft. “One for each of our Yelp reviews that says to ‘go to Dirty Birds’. In all seriousness, we are excited for our new draft system. “

The crew at Thrusters recently finished an educational seminar with Dr. Bill , the craft beer ambassador and certified beer cicerone’ (the equivalent of a beer sommelier) from Stone Gardens Bistro. Dr. Bill walked them through the methods and history of beer making, microbrewery statistics (see above), all the way through the difference in taste, pour, ABV, glassware, and experience of their vast micro brew line up. Come experience their new line up for yourself.

CRAFT BEER SPOTLIGHT ALESMITH Speedway Stout

Rated the #1 BEST BEER IN THE WORLD at ratebeer.com. A HUGE Imperial Stout with an impressive 12% alcohol content. As if that’s not enough, pounds of coffee were added to the batch for a little extra kick. QUALITIES: Aged in Bourbon barrels, Jet Black, with an off-white head. Starts with a strong coffee and dark chocolate sensation, then fades to a multitude of toasty, roasty and caramel malt flavors. Clean and crisp, full- bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content lightens up the feel. You won’t fool your taste buds - this beer is HUGE!

“We’d be honored to have you. And if you like what you see, you’ll love what we have coming soon to Normal Heights..... “

Benson Eadus on

SXSW “With the advent of Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and Coachella, the value of South By Southwest (SXSW) as a consumer option has become debatable”

These new European style mega festivals

provide all that there is in relevant music buffet style over 2-3 days and you can walk away knowledgeable about 40 bands you never knew about.

You haven’t lived until you’ve snuck into a private showing like the C3 party featuring Queens Of The Stone Age, the Revolver Magazine party featuring Spoon playing for 120 people off of a loading dock, or Nickel Creek playing a 200 person listening event in the banquet room of the Driskill Hotel. You aren’t really provided invitations to these events, I’ve come closer to getting arrested sneaking into this stuff, than really any other thing I’ve done, but they’re there, you’re there, why miss out?

South by Southwest, the Austin Texas based confab that uses the weekend of St. Patrick’s day each year, is a one of a kind event that overlays bands on the rise, as well as Texas and Indie legacy musicians onto a small venue landscape in a way that no other city is really capable of. There are attempts, New York has the CMJ festival, Toronto the NXNE festival, and San Diego is in the midst of growing the San Diego Music Thing, but none really compare, none have become the all in one CES, Film, and Music supernova over time that South By Southwest has become.

San Diego, as previously mentioned, is attempting to mature its own version of this. I’m sure the founders of the San Diego Music Thing are basing their expectations modestly and realistically. The San Diego version, set to move to the Sheraton Mission Valley this Year and expand to a wider footprint of local music venues, is doing all it can to marry up the assets of the city: several outstanding small clubs, the leading craft beer market, and proximity to a ton of music and music tech industry types in LA and San Francisco to create educational programming for willing musicians from the entire west of the Mississippi landscape.

Is it for you? You have to start by asking yourself, what’s your best chance to see a band like the White Stripes play in a room of 100 people in your lifetime? I did this and was forever thankful. Muse took over San Diego this past January, selling out the Sports Arena and having both major alternative radio stations having “fanboy” reactions that were a little, umm, delirious. Yet when they played the last SXSW I attended, I went to see them, at 1000 person Stubbs BBQ.

Whether it takes hold is still really up in the air. There’s a lot to offer, plus the advantage of San Diego’s extreme capacity to house an incoming convention crowd. But critical mass will always be determined by the same things that make SXSW the holy grail: will you see a band like the White Stripes in their most primitive light, and will the associated events catch fire in a way that makes you feel that you’re at the Grammys in a way that was made for you?

You have to want that, small club proximity to your pick to be the next cultural phenomenon in music. If you don’t, go to a festival and get out your BIC lighter. If you do, then South By Southwest is the only option on the planet that delivers this result every year. The other thing I’ve always been interested in concerning this event is the crazy sponsor parties. We all watch the Oscars and the Grammys on TV and hear about the after parties on TMZ and really understand that participation isn’t an option. But at SXSW these types of events complete with hosted bars, gift bags, and second appearances by the top talent at the main event, are as big apart of SXSW as the main concerts themselves.

Back to Austin, all the hotels sell out, so if you want to go, be prepared to have to MacGyver a place to stay the same way ComicCon fans suffer here in July, but find relief in the fact that San Diego has a non stop flight to Austin and not enough people are on it such that you can still get at ticket 2 weeks out. That same flight (or 7) out of LAX sells out 120 days in advance every year, just like the hotels.

I’d be remiss if I neglected to add the part about San Diego’s finest musicians participating in this event. Everyone you can think of from the Stone Temple Pilots to Jewel to Rocket From The Crypt, have done their time at SXSW multiple times. None possess a better insight than Steve Poltz who turned 54 this year having been participating nearly every year since 1994. Others have been there earlier, but no one has a more thorough understanding. “The staff at the Crowne Plaza where I’ve done most of my showcases over the years hug me every year I return, like family. I play Mojo Nixons Jalapeno Pancake Breakfast every year at The Continental. I’m bringing Stinky and John Castro from the Rugburns this year, hoping to play 12 times or more and still have time to get lost in the crowd and go see bands, too” said Poltz. Although you would think Steve would be the sage who has seen all that SXSW has to offer, last year he won a fan contest to attend the Bruce Springsteen show and “cried” during Springsteen’s keynote interview during the daytime panels.

This year Hills Like Elephants, Wavves, The Burning Of Rome, Steve Poltz (again), and Retox are a brief listing of the bands from San Diego that will hit SXSW. It’s always fun to run into the hometown groups and buy them a beer (they’re all broke by the time they get there).

This is a rant about a thing that nearly no one who reads this magazine will really ever participate in, but at least 1000 words later, you know why SXSW exists, and if you happen to trek out there one day, and your standing outside Iron Works BBQ next to Iggy Azalia, or in a Driskill elevator next to Tom Waits, you’ll have a sense of the value of that moment. But since you’re staying in town, take a look at the stuff happening in SD in March Flogging Molly hits HOB March 7th, take your little sister Imagine Dragons, Atlas Genius, and Nico Vega hit HOB March 18th if you wondered what those bands that occupy 90% of 91x playlist look like Amy Schumer is out at Pala Starlite Theater March 23rd if you like comedy and haven’t peed your pants recently Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds play The Griffin March 28th for a look at the future SXSW style And lastly, Dash Rip Rock, a band Steve Poltz would tell you to go see in Austin at SXSW is coming to South Park and playing The Whistle Stop March 28th, that’s a can’t miss.

SOUND ADVICE

MUSIC

HEAR THIS

By Leslie Terhorst

EDITORS CHOICE - DAWES – STORIES DON’T END Genre: Rock

While the city of Los Angeles has been both an inspiration and a home to the four members of Dawes - Taylor Goldsmith (lead vocals, guitar), Wylie Gelber (bass), Tay Strathairn (keyboard), Griffin Goldsmith (drums, vocals) - they found themselves traveling East last fall to record their third album in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The tracks they laid down at Asheville’s Echo Mountain Studio have yielded a 12-song disc of tremendous sonic and narrative clarity, book-ended in classic album fashion by two very different versions of the wistful ‘Just Beneath The Surface’ - a misleading title, really, since the songs stacked in between dig so deep. Stories Don’t End is not so much a departure from the quartet’s previous efforts as a distillation of them. It spotlights the group’s maturing skills as arrangers, performers and interpreters who shape the raw material supplied by chief songwriter and lead vocalist Taylor Goldsmith into an artfully concise and increasingly soulful sound. Being released on April 9, Stories Don’t End is Dawes’ first release on their own label, HUB Records. On another note - the band recently visited refugee camps in Rwanda with the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign to help raise awareness and funds to fight malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. “Nothing But Nets’ mission is simple, but makes a real difference,” said Taylor Goldsmith. “A $10 bed net is all it takes to give a family hope. We believe no child should die from a preventable disease like malaria.” Not only good artists, good Samaritans.

Suuns - Images Du Futur

Genre: Rock

Images du Futur is a heavy, slow rock album that will be jarring for those expecting big hooks, but it’s also rewarding for anyone willing to formulate their own interpretation. Opening track ‘Power of Ten’, built on anxiously strummed, distorted guitar and bursts of howling noise, has the sound of an almost apocalyptic agitation running through it, with a little more cowbell, and the vocals sounding as though sung through grinding teeth. As with their previous album, Suuns are masters of restraint. Black Emperor, with Suuns using similar heaviness and calculated pacing to communicate their dystopian vision. Their effective use of repetition also borrows structurally from more rhythmic electronic music. In what speaks to their jazz backgrounds, the words, sung by Ben Shemie, aren’t essential. Images Du Futur was written at the time of the mass student protest in Quebec last autumn. “This is far from a protest album; I always just say [our music] is rock and roll,” says guitarist/vocalist Ben Shemie, “I mean, it is a rock band.” And guitarist/ bassist Joe Yarmush chimes in, “Live our set cannot be mistaken for anything but rock ... That’s where we’re at now for sure.” They’re right: Suuns is rock, and it can’t be mistaken for anything else, but I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Foals – Holy Fire Genre: Indie Rock

NEW RELEASES

Holy Fire is Foals’ third full-length release, and their sonic character has become almost unrecognizable from the tight corners and adolescent wit of their first, Antidotes. Surely this is the time that we begin to discuss words like “maturity.” What I’ll say is that Foals have grown into the sound they seem most confident and comfortable in. In that way, Holy Fire is Foals’ most honest work to date. For a lot of rock bands–especially those with punk or math rock inclinations–channeling the frenetic and frustrated nature of youth into more subtle and complex emotions is what the battle for ‘Maturity’ is all about. Given nuggets like the absolutely stunning third minute of ‘Milk & Black Spiders,’ Foals has learned to calmly deliver packages of dynamite, delicate and volatile. Holy Fire moves through a diverse set of sounds: ‘Inhaler’—the first single—weaves fearless guitar riffing into its sonic layers with a breakdown reminiscent of Tom Morello in his heyday; the smooth new wave jam ‘Out of the Woods’ has a marimba melody that echoes an almost traditionalChinese motif laid out by previous pedal delays on ‘Inhaler’ and ‘My Number;’ ‘Moon’ closes the record with a sultry, ambient outro glistening with tap harmonics. Foals pull off this genre hopping with the guidance and wise pop production techniques of the storied duo Flood (U2, Nick Cave, Sigur Rós) and Alan Moulder (The Killers, Depeche Mode, Smashing Pumpkins). The drum fade-in at 1:00 on ‘Late Night’ and classic stringed orchestra to emphasize the final chorus on ‘My Number’ are examples of how hooks are tastefully seasoned with skillful studio production throughout the record.

THE BURNING OF ROME

[LP] 18. *Purchase of the LP includes customer link for free download San Diego’s, The Burning Of Rome, started as a recorded concept, and developed into a live act when a group of friends got together and decided to bring the experience to the stage. “With Us” was recorded in LA at EastWest studios, produced by Adam Traub and Tom Biller, mixed by Dave Darling (Tom Waits, Jack Johnson, Brian Setzer) with additional remixes by Paul Leary (Butthole Surfers, Sublime, U2, Meat Puppets, Pepper). The band ended up in the same room that ‘Pet Sounds” was tracked in 40 years prior. There was an intense energy throughout the recording process. Periodically Flea, who was recording with Red Hot Chili Peppers in the other half of the studio, or Anthony Kiedis would check in for small talk. Even a nod from Rick Rubin by the coffee machine was a major inspiration. Challenged by the surrounding greatness “With Us” evolved. They have opened for acts such as The Black Keys, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Devo, MGMT, Skrillex, Suicidal Tendencies and Jimmy Eat World. Released on vinyl by Encinitas-based Surfdog Records. Please Support Local Music!

ERIC CLAPTON - Old Sock

OLD SOCK will be released March 12 on Clapton’s Bushbranch label, distributed through a new collaboration with Encinitas-based Surfdog Records in the USA and Canada. The new album is a collection of some of Clapton’s favorite songs spanning from his childhood to present day that highlights his vast appreciation and knowledge of music. From Leadbelly to J.J. Cale; Peter Tosh to George Gershwin; Hank Snow to Gary Moore and Taj Mahal, this record is a celebration of so many who have inspired Clapton’s rich musical life. Clapton has always had a remarkable ability to recognize great songs and a gift for knowing how to uniquely interpret them, as he does on Old Sock. The album explores romantic standards of the 30’s, reggae, soul, rock, and includes a stand out playful collaboration with Paul McCartney, to create an experience that is quintessential Clapton.

MINI REVIEWS

FILM

MUST SEE

By Beth Accomando

WARM BODIES

(Summit Entertainment) He’s dead, she’s not. What’s a couple in love to do? Imagine Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet refashioned as a teen zombie rom com and you have Warm Bodies. The film succeeds primarily because of Nicholas Hoult’s endearing performance as R, an undead teen trying to fit into a postapocalyptic world. The script is mostly fun and clever, and the make up is killer at showing slow transformations. Shakespeare may be turning in his grave at this reanimated version of his tragedy but it’s all in good fun. Currently playing.

JOHN DIES AT THE END

WATCH THIS

(Magnet Releasing) John Dies at the End should carry a drug label warning: caution consumption of this film may induce hallucinations, impair your ability to see the world as you once did, and cause outbursts of uncontrollable laughter. Director Don Coscarelli gave us Phantasm and Bubba Ho-Tep, a pair of cult gems. He displays his supreme originality yet again with John Dies at the End. What’s great is that Coscarelli takes an absurd premise, presents it as perfectly plausible, and along the way considers serious ideas without ever taking himself too seriously. Based on a web serial from 2001, it pairs well with Philip K. Dick or William S. Burroughs. Currently available video on demand.

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL

(Walt Disney) Walt Disney and Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi do not make ideal bedfellows. At least it wouldn’t seem so. But Raimi is returning to the Oz story courtesy of the Mouse. The 1939 MGM film with Judy Garland is such a classic and so ingrained in pop culture that reinventing the L. Frank Baum story for the screen would seem a daunting task. The film was not available for preview but the few images available make me think more of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland” than Baum or Raimi and that’s not a good thing. Opens March 8.

STOKER

(Fox Searchlight) South Korean director Park Chan Wook gave us the magnificent Vengeance Trilogy (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance). If that was all he contributed to cinema, that would be monumental on its own. But this year Park makes his first English language film and delivers something elegant and chilly with a hint of evil. Very different in tone and style from his Korean film but every bit as well crafted. Opens March 15.

GI JOE: RETALIATION

(MGM) This film has been through more battles than its characters. It had originally been set for release last June. But then Channing Tatum got popular. So in response to audience demand for more of the bland but hunky star, Paramount delayed the release and reshot scenes to include more Channing. The film also stars Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Ray Stevenson, and Korean star Lee Byun-hun. Not much hope for this one. It may be a casualty of the studio overthinking the film’s marketability. Opens March 28.
