WORLD OF REVOLT

MEET SWELL HEARTS YOUNG LOCAL SURFER IS ON A LIFE SAVING MISSION

Jacob Kilby is a 19 year old, San Diego surfer. You would never guess that Jacob has had a life threatening health conditions prior to his birth. Jacob was born in 1995 with half of a heart, a condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. By the time Jacob was just two days old he was prepped for his first open heart surgery. There would be 2 more following his first, all in attempts to help his natural heart heal enough to allow him to live for the time being. At the age of 2 and a half, after 3 open heart surgeries, Cardiologists could see that Jacob’s body was not responding as they had hoped. Jacob was given 24 hours to live. Miraculously, a donor match was found just in time and Jacob received his first gift of life, a heart transplant. Jacob was lucky enough to receive an organ. 17 years later, Jacob needs that luck once again as he is currently listed for the second time. Jacob’s body is rejecting his donor heart, a condition called Cardiac Allograft Vasculothopy. CAV occurs when antibodies build up in your arteries and restrict blood flow and ultimately take over your heart.

AIDS LIFECYCLE 2015

TEAM CRETINS - 18 San Diego Riders Join Thousands On Ride TEAM CRETINS is back with a bang! They have new recruits and are ready for AIDS/ LifeCycle 2015! From May 31 to June 6, each member of this team — as well as thousands of cyclists and roadies — will embark on a seven-day, 545-mile bicycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The entire team shows even the most core cyclist what it means to be committed! Team Cretins ride FIXIES! Also known as fixed-gear bicycles, a Fixie is a bicycle that has a drivetrain with no freewheel mechanism. As a general rule, fixed-gear bicycles are single-speed. The drive sprocket (or cog) threaded or bolted directly to the hub of the back wheel, so that the rider cannot stop pedalling. Most fixed-gear bicycles only have a front brake, and some have no brakes at all!

Jacob lives life to the fullest & passes along the stoke wherever he can.

The unfortunate fact of his situation is there’s no guarantee that Jacob will receive a heart. Nation-wide, 21 people die every day waiting for an organ that never comes. The last 8 months have truly been a learning experience, not to mention worrisome and unclear as to when and if he will receive that second donor heart. During this time, Jacob has become educated about his disease and about congenital heart defects. Jacob has planned many events that have brought organ donation awareness into the San Diego community. He was invited to go to Washington DC with the Pediatric Heart Association last month and was lucky enough to receive a grant to go. The goal was to request continuing support for congenital heart disease research. There in DC, Jacob fiercely advocated for organ donation research, as well as his personal foundation Swell Hearts.

What is Swell Hearts? Jacob’s foundation stands for organ donation and the importance of educating people about cardiac heart disease. His mission is to save as many lives as he can through the power of inspiring people to become organ donors, as well as their future offspring. His slogan of “Donate to Create” is a message to people that organ donation can create change and future lives for people with little or no hope of a future without an organ donor. Team Cretins are the only team that ride FIXIES exclusively!

What is the AIDS/LIFECYCLE? It’s a 7-day, 545 mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles that raises money and awareness for the HIV and AIDS services of the Los Angeles LGBT Center and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. 2015 marks the fourteenth year for AIDS/LifeCycle and the twenty-second for the event overall, and during the week of May 31 - June 6, thousands of Cyclists and volunteer Roadies will come together to do something incredible. Something that will change lives. Something that YOU can be a part of! AIDS/LifeCycle is the only AIDS fundraising bicycle event in California organized by the non-profit agencies that will benefit from the money raised by its participants. Their sole concern is providing critical services to people living with HIV and AIDS. For more info on how to get involved go to: www.aidslifecycle.org

RE INVENTING REVOLT

Planet X TV and Revolt In Style Magazine to form new media unit In the ever changing world of entertainment media, Revolt In Style has adapted numerous times over their 30 year history to remain viable & unique in the lifestyle & action sports markets. This included changing content, formats, adjusting distribution and adapting to new demographics. Now Revolt In Style looks toward another opportunity to break ahead of imitators and competitors, capture new audiences and create unique content to be shared globally. Event management has played an important role in the development of proprietary content. Not only do they report the news, they make the news with their own RVLT Pro Am surfing series (and now a new Pro Am Paddle race series). Basically, by putting their money where their mouth is & giving back to the sports & athletes that they truly care about. The Revolt Summer Surf Series will begin season 9 on June 13. The Sunday Sunday Sunday Paddle Race Series kicks off a week before. These grassroots, independent, RVLT events generate revenue for the surrounding communities while providing a platform for athletes to perform, accel & be rewarded in the sport of their choice. The events combine competition with environmental awareness thru multiple .org partners. While other companies seek to emulate the RVLT format exactly for their own various agendas, none can copy the franchise exactly, RVLT remains true to their core values, which are: provide a FAIR judging system, provide the best possible environment for the athletes. Make them fun & keep it real - always remembering the events are for the athletes first. To that we say; Mission Accomplished. Ultimately to stay out in front of multiple copy-cat publications the business plan for Revolt In Style will follow a path leading to more exclusive online and video content. For years the entire magazine has been enjoyed online by hundreds of thousands globally. The original content is shared on social media and the World of Revolt extends to all of North America, UK, Europe, South America, South Africa & Australia. Revolt now plans to develop exclusive video content with Planet X TV to entertain & inform our existing friends & fans as well as attract many new followers. The soon-to-be launched unit will focus on new media venture activity including Planet X’s new “Ten Planets of Planet X” online video channel portfolio. Tagged as Planet X’s “Online Solar System”, this new roster of next generation video channels will be both unique in platform and format within the wide range of youth entertainment. Signature channels include; Seasick.tv ( ocean sports and ecology), Repel.tv (martial arts and endurance sports), LOSAR.tv (comedy sports channel) and Bluevan.tv (youth travel channel). A brand new PlanetX.tv will also soon launch with a broader coverage of youth entertainment categories to add to the current extreme and action sports genre that Planet X has been known for since its worldwide launch in 1995. Now in its 20th Anniversary the New Planet X will be a radical new media brand and asset for its viewers worldwide. Leslie Terhorst of Revolt-in-Style will act as the Editor-in-Chief for the new media unit and Planet X’s Tom Dulaney will act as the head of sales and marketing. Additional announcements of other staff and leadership will soon be made on this unique new media product line and offering from both parties.

LAS VEGAS

There’s Las Vegas... and then there’s VEGAS, BABY!

STAY HERE THE PLAZA

www.plazahotelcasino.com

Ok, It’s fairly common place to jump on a plane, fly to Las Vegas, check in at an over priced, super slick, strip resort. Proceed to... drink up, party til dawn, eat on the run, lose all your hard earned dough at the tables... A couple days later, you’re heading home with a fat hangover & skinny wallet. Been there. Done that. Not feelin’ it. This trip we decide to do things a little different. We opt for the road less traveled (literally) We drive out (gas is cheap). We stay in Downtown Las Vegas. Eat where the locals eat, drink where the locals drink & gamble where the locals gamble. The money we saved, we put towards something that would push this trip over the edge... Something we would remember till the day we die. A Heli tour of the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam & Las Vegas like you’ve never imagined. Yeah, that’s something you don’t get to see everyday. To start off, the drive thru the desert is good. Relaxing even. Put it on cruise control & turn up the tunes. First time in, I don’t know how long, we just enjoy each other’s company. Take time to pull off the main & explore some back roads. Leslie fires off frames of cactus & thunderclouds while I keep my eyes peeled for the ‘Coppers’. Four & a half hours later, we’re in Las Vegas. We check into the Plaza. Smells a bit like Febreeze, rooms are pretty average for Las Vegas, but hell.... it’s just a place to catch some Z’s! We gamble at some of the classic casinos on Freemont Street. We dine at some pretty cool joints. We drink cocktails on the street. It may not be as shiny as the strip, but we had an epic time.

PLAY HERE THE FREEMONT EXPERIENCE www.vegasexperience.com

Live music on three stages, 1700 foot long zip lines, street performers & freakshow like no other - a seemingly endless selection of casinos, bars & attractions... and to top it off - a 1500 foot long video screen overhead with mind blowing graphics & and a rotating schedule of music from just about every musical genre you can imagine. Absolutely free. No ticket required. Grab a cocktail, pick your spot & chill... or let loose & dance like nobody’s watching. Uh, yeah... People are watching.

What can you say. Opitomy of old Las Vegas. Sitting ominously at the mouth of Freemont Street. It has been featured or seen in multiple movies and music videos for decades. Classic Vegas. The Plaza has a long history in Las Vegas. The former site of the first train depot in Las Vegas built back at the turn of the century. In the 70’s it was “The largest hotel and casino in the world” and after changing ownership a few times was completely renovated in 2011 and 35 million dollars later... It’s still the Plaza!

EAT HERE OSCAR’S STEAKHOUSE www.oscarslv.com

The Viva Vision video screen is 1,500 feet long, 90 feet wide and 90 feet above - it’s made up of 12.5 million energy-LED lamps.. Take a few minutes to soak it in. Incredible shows currently include music by The Who, The Doors, Bon Jovi & Heart - they last about six minutes, and run every hour. Very entertaining. The SlotZilla Zipline tower is just past the east end of the Viva Vision canopy (you can’t miss it, it’s a giant slot machine!), On the Zipline, flyers go halfway down the Fremont Street Experience (850 feet), in a seated position. On the upper level, the Zoomline, guests ride “superhero-style” all the way down the Fremont Street Experience canopy (1,700 feet). The Zoomline’s are 114 feet up, the Zipline’s lines are 77 feet up. You can get tickets at the SlotZilla ticket office, across from Neonopolis, or online: slotzilla.showare.com. Most slot machines in Las Vegas now use ticket technology, but the second floor of The D Las Vegas has tons of classic machines that still take and pay out in coins. Bring that big ass bucket of change from home that’s been collecting dust in the corner. Good way to get a few free drinks while waiting for that big ‘ol payout... Patience, patience. Top Tip - Check out some local joints ,The Vanguard, Mob Museum, Container Park, Golden Gate, Main Street Station.... If you know where to look, you can find free slot machine pulls at Fremont Street casinos. Two of the best free slot pulls are at Binion’s and Four Queens. At each, you could win up to $2,500 cash.

Without a doubt, the best part of our downtown experience. Although the politically incorrect moniker on the neon sign advertises ‘Beef, Booze & Broads’ - it might have you guessing that upstairs would be a seedy, rundown, obsolete dive bar & grill with watered down cocktails & old retired strippers lounging about in some smoke filled, time warp nightmare of perpetuity.... sorry, I digress. No, in fact you would be wrong... To our surprise, we were welcomed into an extremely polished & stylish five star restaurant. Plush leather booths focus your gaze thru huge windows, directly down the pipe of Freemont Street - We ordered fine wine & feast on delicious appetizers and prime cuts of filet. Crazy! The ‘Broads’ they refer to are models hired along with wise-guys impersonators making the rounds ensuring that you are having a great time (or else) Kinda like the guardians of the ‘Rat Pack’ era. All in all, a wonderful experience. Highly recommended.

www.snowsummit.com

ow that the snow has vanished & the winter gear has been stowed... it’s time to break out the Mountain Bike gear & prep for an epic season of riding. Best place to ride? Snow Summit Mountain Bike Park at Bear Mountain.

Less than two hours from San Diego (or on the way home from Las Vegas trip) Extreme banking turns, jumps and wooden bridges for all skill levels have been constructed on three separate trails for the modest to extreme riders. All accessible by lifts. No gear of your own? No worries, they also offer rental equipment. FYI - It’s some of the best equipment you can get your hands on. Just sayin’.

14 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

If you are looking for great entertainment, look no further than The Cave in The Village. They spared no expense when turning the old movie theater into a live show venue. The Cave is a rare treat, especially for a community the size of Big Bear Lake. It still has that local, small venue feel but with big city sound with some name music acts. Crazy Town, Berlin and The Tubes are just some of the upcoming shows.

EAT HERE COWBOY EXPRESS STEAK HOUSE www.cowboyexpresssteakhouse.com

Snow Summit only Mountain Bike Passes are just $299 and you can start using them on opening day, which is May 8th, 2015. Opening weekend festivities including much more than just the first chance to ride through the Bike Park this summer, they also have contests, giveaways, industry vendors and DJ Slipmatt. As always there will be hiking, biking and the Scenic Sky Chair, that will take you up to the most scenic BBQ in Big Bear: the View Haus. Fri-Sun only until June 19th when they start daily operations for the summer season. For the first time this year you can get a joint bike park pass giving you access to both Mammoth & Snow Summit for just $399.” For more info, lift tickets & directions: www.snowsummit.com

After a full day of Big Bear, no matter what your sport, the fuel tank needs to be re-filled. No better way in than Cowboy Express. The largest piece of meat with a ginormous baked potato - too many sides to describe plus a solid list of beers on tap to choose from. Get there early or expect to wait for a while - the lines prove that even the local carnivores call this their ‘go-to’ spot.

IRON PIG ALEHOUSE

A BBQ SIN-SATION

I don’t have an addiction. Wait, what’s the definition of an addiction? Webster’s: “An unusually great interest in something or a need to do or have something.” Uh oh! I do have an addiction! To Iron Pig Alehouse BBQ! After 6 visits in two weeks, I’m pretty sure I know why... Our first visit was to find out what our good friend Kenny Casciato was up to. After Kenny sold Ciro’s Pizza on Garnet, together with partners Louise Kelly & Brigette O’Donovan (Baby Bird Communications) they opened up Iron Pig Ale House. It’s just up the street, where the old Haiku Sushi used to be. We all met at about 11 in the morning, along with Head Chef Rick Daniels. We had to find out more about the amazing smell that irradiated from the premises. O’boy does it ever…. I thought I had tasted all that BBQ had to offer here in SD. From Phil’s to Mikes to Blonde’s. Bulls, Brazen, Kansas City.... Abby’s off Miramar Rd. and even Dickie’s in Temecula. For the most part, they’re all pretty good - in their own way. But, I have to say, the barbeque at IRON PIG, is nothing short of a Taste-gasm! Iron Pig Alehouse is the official name of the restaurant, but the actual “Iron Pig” is the huge smoker in back. They literally had to tear out the wall just to get it inside. Executive Chef Rick Daniels gave us a tour of the kitchen and the huge smoker was our first stop. He ceremoniously opened the huge doors. I swear I’d died and was standing in front of the Pearly Gates! Racks of Ribs, whole briskets, pork butts, ½ Chickens, baked beans and even wings; all soaking in the wonderful flavors of oak and hickory for hour upon hour. Yes, I was definitely in Heaven. I asked Chef Rick how long everything has been cooking inside the Iron Pig. Rick tells us “The Brisket - 15 hours, the Baby Back Ribs - 4 hours, Spare Ribs - 5 to 6 hours, Pork Butt - 12, the Chicken 3.5 & Wings 2. Tomatoes (for the aioli) for 2 hours” Rick added, “We even smoke the Portobello Mushroom for the Vegetarian sandwich for at least ½ an hour.” As I stood there, my mouth seriously watering... Chef pointed out everything was being made from scratch. Sauces, aoli’s, dressings, side dishes and even the pickles are their own recipe.

THE PERFECT PAIR Smoked Brisket plate paired with a Fall Brewery Loudspeaker Rye IPA. The Iron Pig Alehouse serves authentic slow cooked, smoked barbecue, coupled with an extensive craft beer program

You may say “Well of course it looked good, they knew you where coming.” Right ... I thought of that as well. So, we came back again, unannounced... and then again... and then, just to be sure.... a couple more times! Now, we have been to Iron Pig SIX times in as many weeks. Each trip has been as amazing as our first time. It’s barbeque perfection. At it’s finest... & Yes, I’m an addict.

Tap This! Iron Pig Ale House has 36 Draft Lines, 0 dedicated, all fresh,

cleaned and rotated regularly. 2 Nitro Lines – If you have never had Craft Beer on Nitro, it adds a silky smooth texture & extra richness to the flavor. “I highly recommend it” (Ferris Bueller reference.) 4 select wines are on tap at all times as well. You might think it’s a bit unconventional to have wines on tap, but, it tastes better, stays fresher, and you don’t ever have to worry about ‘when that bottle was opened’. A huge win win! So in conclusion, I give this place high marks all the way around. Make sure you tell them REVOLT sent you. Just a little FYI, they did just receive the “Best New Restaurant in PB.” Congrats Iron Pig, keep up the great work! Photos and review: Leslie Terhorst

THE BELCHING BEAVER BREWERY AND TASTING ROOM OF THE MONTH

We have been raving about our local craft beer scene for years now. With well over 100 craft breweries up & running in San Diego, we need to take aim & focus our sights on the really good ones. We appreciate great beer & know the hard work that goes into producing said beer; but space and time is limited. So when we come across an outstanding product, we have to give credit where credit is due. Belching Beaver is one such brewery. Belching Beaver has been operating at or somewhere near ‘Defcon Four’ for the past year - either they’re busy opening their newest tasting room on 30th, attending seminars and winning awards at Craft Beer festivals, hosting & catering events, planning another Belching Beaver expansion (...whaaaat?) Or making their incredible craft beer. Owners Tom Vogel and Dave Mobley have put together a great team. Troy Smith is the brewmaster behind the funny label. He has a remarkable brewing pedigree from time well spent at Coronado Brewing Co. His knowledge ranges from “How to make the finest beer on the planet” to “What you do not want to do... Ever.” He’s a fan of offroad racing and knows where to find the freshest seafood in San Diego. Very impressive resume´ for such a young guy. Robert Kilborne is our liason to liquid nirvana. You may recognize his name from an earlier profile on PB’s Barrel Republic. Yes, same Robert and still the busiest man in the business. Happy now as Beverage Director (cool title) for BB & everytime we’ve met with him, his passion for the craft is apparent. This time he is beyond proud, of who and what he represents - the constant parade of beer samples has lead to us (4 times now) forgetting completely what our mission was in the first place - instead of finishing a review, we wind up laughing and sharing great stories - just a bunch of friends drinking great beer. Reasons for Belching Beavers fast success - Troy’s knowledge. Immaculate brewing conditions & the no fear attitude & willingness to take chances. Combine that with the great new location in North Park & you have Lightning in a Bottle... or pint glass. Keep an eye on these guys in 2015. This is a formidable brewery in a packed house of competitors. Highly recommended.

Try These:

Hop Highway IPA; Now the go-to / icebreaker pint everytime we visit. Hints of grapefruit, passionfruit, and citrus make this sessionable brew both clean & refreshing. ABV: 7.3%, IBU: 65 Easy Beaver; Brewed for the Spring and Summer seasons; designed to keep you refreshed and loaded with hops (without getting ripped). A session Wheat IPA - Crisp, clean, and aromatic. ABV: 4.7%, IBU: 45 Me So Honey; Smooth - a subtle taste of honey. It’s made in Poway with wild flowers and cloves. This is a very drinkable beer for both the novice craft beer drinker to the experienced triple IPA beer guy. ABV: 5.5%, IBU: 19 Peanut Butter Milk Stout; This is like dark chocolate Reese’s in a glass! Rolled oats and Lactose add to the creamy body of this beer while the aroma of peanut butter and chocolate greet you with every sip. Try this out with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a real treat! ABV: 5.3%, IBU: 30

MOTHER EARTH ECO WARRIORS

MEET A FEW OF OUR FRIENDS THAT WAKE UP EACH DAY WITH A COMMON, SELFLESS GOAL... TO AID IN THE PRESERVATION OF OUR PLANET.

SEA SAVE

www.seasave.org Sea Save Foundation, a non-profit, 501(c)3, ocean conservation organization based in Malibu, California, campaigns to protect the world’s oceans by heightening awareness of the planet’s fragile marine ecosystems and by advocating for change in public policy. Sea Save Foundation was founded by Georgienne Bradley, a well-known photographer and film producer who serves as the organization’s director and is one of it’s biggest private donors. A member of the Women’s Diving Hall of Fame, Bradley is a tireless advocate for the world’s oceans. She leads a team primarily made up of volunteers who work tirelessly to raise visibility for a variety of important ocean-related causes all over the world. The Cocos Island National Park in Costa Rica, a remote island that is home to a thriving marine population, was designated a World Heritage Site in 1997. Georgienne helped bring international attention to Cocos Island and contributed to the UNESCO proposal that brought the island World Heritage status. Georgienne’s photographs were used by the Costa Rica government to launch a national marine-awareness campaign. The images were used in a postage stamp series, lottery tickets and other materials that generated national attention. Sea Save Foundation is currently working on a campaign: Voice of cocos Island to provide much needed support to the Island park guards. http://seasave.org/what-we-do/voice-of-cocos-island/

OCEANFORCE

www.oceanforce.org Meet Southern California underdogs Oceanforce Foundation. What started as a small grassroots group – Tijuana River Citizen’s Council - at the beginning of 2007 turned into a much larger project when it evolved into an international rooster of activists working to protect the oceans. Since 2009 Oceanforce Foundation is been working to create healthier oceans, beaches and marine ecosystems in communities around the globe. Lead by waterman and ocean activist Captain Alfonso Lopez the foundation actively runs conservancy and educational programs in the United States, Mexico and Argentina. One of the highlights of the organization was to be part of the working force bringing Tijuana River pollution issues to light and thus paving the road for bigger and more influential groups such as Surfrider Foundation, I Love a Clean San Diego and Coastkeeper to get involved and to support their efforts in Imperial Beach, CA - one of the most polluted beaches in continental U.S. In Mexico they have been able to stop a private development from destructing a 128 acres of virgin land known as Punta Colorada, in the Mexican Pipeline of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. The area is nothing but a land and marine sanctuary known not only for its amazing tubular waves year round but also for its biodiversity and unparalleled beauty.

20 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

Another cool project of Oceanforce Foundation in the U.S. is their Sea Scout Ship which gives at-risk youth from underserved communities a chance to safely enjoy the ocean, learn to love it and to protect it. Besides learning to sail anything from small to big boats, and all maritime skills, these kids are now some of our local San Diego ocean stewards. They also lead the foundation’s monthly beach cleanups and help advocate for cleaner and healthier oceans!

“By working closely with local fisherman and all those trying to make a livelihood from the sea we hope to gain a better understanding of the current state of our oceans and what we can all do to help save them.” Finally, at the end of this year Captain Alfonso will be leading an ocean conservancy expedition from San Diego to South America. The project is called You My Ocean and it will connect distant communities which share similar pollution issues along the coast of Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and South America. Together with Sea Scouts on board, surfing pros and diving experts they will be conducting beach cleanups at every stop they make and documenting the expedition to make a full feature movie. For more info and to become involved visit www.youmyocean.com

The Foundation is also an active participant in the Whale Entanglement Team (WET), a cooperative effort to free entangled whales off the coast of California. It is a foundation patron of the BLUE Ocean Film Festival and Conservation Summit, a bi-annual 7-day event that brings together ocean leaders from all over the world to honor the best in ocean filmmaking, and to collaborate on finding answers to important ocean-facing issues.

Sea Save debuted a PSA “Big Blue Town” , a metaphorical video describing the plight of sharks in our oceans, at the 2014 festival. http://seasave.org/what-we-do/big-blue-town/ The core of the Sea Save Foundation’s mission, however, is to affect public policy changes that have a positive effect on the world’s oceans. SSF worked directly with policy makers in California to pass the AB376 in California to ban shark finning. In 2013, representatives from Sea Save Foundation helped negotiate groundbreaking policy changes at CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) to protect seven marine species. SSF will be attending again in 2016. http://seasave.org/what-we-do/cites/

“Every year, close to 100 million sharks are killed for their fins,” explains Bradley. “This cruel and unsustainable practice, called shark finning, involves cutting the fins from sharks and dumping the still living animals back into the ocean, where they sink to the bottom and slowly die.” It’s current Give ‘em The Fin campaign is aimed at stopping the abhorrent practice of shark finning, which involves harvesting the fins from living sharks and then dumping them back into the ocean to die. The effort is well on its way to collecting 20,000 photographs submitted by global supporters giving the international sign of the shark to be uploaded to a mosaic on strategically placed billboards around the world, with the tagline “Be Part of the Global Picture: Say NO to Shark Fin Soup”. http://seasave.org/what-we-do/give-em-the-fin/ Sea Save Foundation strives to protect our oceans by raising awareness about the beauty of marine ecosystems and their fundamental importance to human survival. We seek solutions, advance public policy, and drive advocacy.

THE SURFRIDER FOUNDATION www.surfridersd.org.

A little over thirty years ago, a group of visionary surfers in Malibu, California came together to save their favorite surf break. Little did they know this would be the beginning of a global grassroots movement to protect the world’s oceans, waves and beaches. Today, the Surfrider Foundation is comprised of over 250,0000 supporters, activists and members worldwide. The organization has 84 chapters in the United States, with international affiliates in 20 different countries. The San Diego County Chapter was formed in 1991 and today is one of the largest and most active chapters in the world. The chapter actively protects 70 miles of coastline with the support of two staff, a seven person executive committee, and more than 5000 volunteers The chapter, in partnership with San Diego Coastkeeper, will host over forty public beach cleanups throughout the county to address the issue of marine debris plaguing our beaches. During these cleanups, volunteers will collect data on the types of marine debris that they find and this information will be used to support education and advocacy work. The chapter’s Rise Above Plastics committee will launch an Ocean Friendly Restaurants campaign, which aims to work with the local restaurant community to institute self-regulated ocean friendly policies.

The chapter’s work is divided into seven program areas: Beach Cleanups, Rise Above Plastics, Hold On To Your Butt, No Border Sewage, Ocean Friendly Gardens, Know Your H2O, and Beach Preservation. The Hold On To Your Butt program will continue installed ashcans throughout the county to address cigarette butt pollution. The No Border Sewage program will address the environmental issues affecting the wetland areas and beaches of the border region through cleanups, tours, and collaboration with other like-minded organizations in the Tijuana River Action Network. The Ocean Friendly Gardens committee will continue to educate and train the general public on ways to prevent urban runoff and help restore urban watersheds by applying CPR to their landscapes: Conserving water and energy, Permeating water into the soil, and Retaining rainwater on site. Know Your H2O will educate people on the link between freshwater management issues and the impact on our oceans, waves, and beaches. Beach Preservation will work on preserving San Diego’s remaining natural coastline and restoring the coast to its natural, unarmored state, including the landward migration of the shoreline due to the natural geology of the coast and sea level rise.

FUTUR

I

am fortunate to be able to speak with a lot of artists. Most of them are extremely talented in their particular field of play. Occasionally, I will pigeonhole a person by the title they were given (DJ) and assume that’s all they do. Well much to my surprise, this Grammy-Nominated DJ, International Producer, Songwriter, Musician, Record Label Owner... turns out to be one of the most straight forward, focused, hardest working, talented, non-drinking, non-drug using artist I have had the pleasure to speak with. Talk about what you can accomplish if you just put your mind to it! Just in case you don’t know who he is, let me introduce you to Steve Aoki. Steve is the middle son to Rocky Aoki, a former Japanese wrestler and founder of the restaurant chain Benihana’s. Born in Florida, Steve grew up in Newport Beach CA, and is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara with 2 BAs; one in Feminist Studies and the other in Sociology. Not exactly what you would expect from a “DJ.” Steve started out at a young age collecting comic books, “I was a Marvel Comic guy. I was so fortunate to be able to interview Stan Lee, at 92 I can’t believe how sharp he is,” Aoki continued, “If it wasn’t for Stan I wouldn’t be where I am today. Collecting comic books led me to collecting albums, which got me into music.” But, it wasn’t as straightforward as you would think. Steve’s father didn’t share his passion for music, so at the age of 18 and with $750 of his own money, he started the record label Dim Mak Records – Dim Mak means ‘Touch of Death’ a reference to his childhood hero, Bruce Lee. The now 37-year-old has over 600 releases through his label - includes well named artists such as MSTRKRFT, The Kills, The Bloody Beetroots, Felix Cartal and Mustard Pimp, as well as Bloc Party, Klaxons, Infected Mushroom, Scanners, Whitey, and Mystery Jets. Dim Mak, is still going strong after 19 years. Davey Havok and Jade Puget of Alt/Rock band AFI were recently signed to Aoki’s label for their side project, XTRMST. “Signing XTRMST was incredible for Dim Mak, and then to be on stage singing ‘Filler’ by (legendary punk band) Minor Threat with them was incredible,” Aoki said.

“Neon Future II weaves together more vocals and emotions into darker tracks,” Aoki comments, “I’m really happy to get this album out, because it’s not a departure from ‘Neon Future I,” states Aoki “It’s more like an evolution. It’s not the same; they’re two different albums. It’s like a twin who just got born into the world.” “The album will feature collaborations with Linkin Park, Snoop Dogg, NERVO, Matthew Koma, featured in ‘Find You’ by Zedd, and many others. There’s the song I did with Walk Off The Earth called ‘Home We’ll Go (Take My Hand)’ which is just an incredible song, we morphed it over the course of 2-years, going back and forth, then finalizing the vocal in a studio in LA”, Aoki said. “They not only sing and put down their incredible vocals on there, but they brought in guitars and violins. It’s a true musical collaboration on that one.” Aoki added, “This is different than anything I’ve ever done. The album has been in the works since 2012.” He continues “I’m sure you’ve heard of these DJ’s that put down a song in about 3 or 4 hours, and release it out in two weeks. This is the opposite, the inspiration for these songs are over 3 years old, once I get the vocals in, that’s when I can really freestyle with the beat. The main thing we’re pushing right now is a song called ‘I Love It When You Cry,’ with a fairly new singer named Moxie, who’s actually came on the tour.” Aoki continues, “I’m really proud of this album and everyone who worked on it.”

“...the inspiration for these songs are over 3 years old. Once I get the vocals in, that’s when I can really freestyle with the beat.“

I asked him what advise would you give to up and coming artists “If you’re an artist lost, stay consistent, don’t follow any sort of model, trail your own path, even if it’s non traditional, someone will take notice, and that’s all you need. Also, if you base your art on how much money you make, you won’t go very far. You have to treat it as an art, keep it your own.” Finally, where do you see yourself 80 years from now? Aoki replies, “Hopefully I’ll still be alive, I will be part of the Neon Future.”

‘Neon Future’, Aoki’s most recent project is an album two years in the making & It’s split into two volumes. The first “Neon Future” was released in September 2014, and the second Neon Future II will be released May 12, 2015. Aoki has transformed Neon Future into a way of life. Not only a way of thinking about the future, but about trying to prepare and sustain our future. “Neon Future I” features more “turnt up” party anthems, and in typical Aoki fashion, also includes crossovergenre collaborations with the likes of Fall Out Boy, Empire of the Sun, Flux Pavilion, Afrojack and Bonnie McKee. The album also includes the Top 40 radio single “Delirious (Boneless)” with Chris Lake, as well as ‘Tujamo,’ featuring rapper Kid Ink; ‘Born To Get Wild,’ featuring will.i.am; ‘Rage The Night Away’ featuring Waka Flocka Flame; and ‘Free The Madness,’ with Machine Gun Kelly.” Aoki has also collaborated with Travis Barker, of Blink 182, for the song ‘Misfits’ off Barker’s solo album ‘Can a Drummer Get Some.’ The two have recently appeared to be working together again. “Me and Travis, we’re already working on an idea, but it’s just an idea right now,” Aoki said. “But ‘Neon Future II’ is really my main focus.”

ROCK AND ROLL SAN DIEGO

13,000 SQUARE FEET OF MUSIC MANIA Interview By Brian Terhorst Photos by Leslie Terhorst

Rock & Roll San Diego is a mecca for musicians & music lovers alike - What exactly is it? A full service music center, really. Music lessons for youth and adults of all levels - Band classes, fully equipped rehearsal rooms, sales, repairs, rentals. 2 complete recording studios, one with one of the largest tracking rooms in San Diego, and video services.

We recently sat down with the man behind it all: Mark Langford. He’s been involved in The San Diego music scene for some time now. From ‘Big hair’ 80’s Rock Star, to the man behind the lights and stages we all enjoyed at Street Scene. Teacher, performer, mentor to many... Here’s what else we learned:

n June of 2011, Mark Langford opened shop with the goal of teaching confidence, creativity, teamwork and leadership through music. He tells us how they evolved into much more than a music and band lesson business, and how it’s actually better for the students. “They can hang out with Rock Stars and be inspired by them.” A person can walk in the door, learn how to play music, make a recording and video here and even perform in their large concert hall.

RIS: Who continues to use the facilities? ML: Some of the very cool bands who rehearse here are Slower, Eukaryst, Sand Dollar, Wicked Tongues, The City Ballet Orchestra, and so many other fantastic groups. It’s so awesome to hear the diversity each day.

I

After a few years of adapting and tweaking the venue to accommodate his clientele, business is now better than ever. Having just completed their new, state of the art recording studio. ‘Studio A’ is spacious, beautifully decorated and both relaxing and inspirational. “With all the latest technology.” The tracking room is 1800sf and equally as nice. It comes with top tier modern as well as vintage gear. They recently upgraded & expanded the sales department & hired new (extremely talented) staff members to keep up with the busy demands - Matt Witte: a seasoned luthier - is set up with a complete workshop. Mike Ruggirello: teaches guitar and works with students of all ages & Jeff Merideth: skilled in recording, sales, live sound and more.

Revolt In Style: I know you have a rich history here - let’s talk about who has recorded & rehearsed at Rock & Roll San Diego over the years Mark Langford: Ace Frehley of KISS tops it for me, for sure. We have had the B 52s, P.O.D, Sheldon Reynolds of Earth, Wind & Fire, A Day To Remember, Pierce the Veil, Cattle Decapitation, and lots of great local bands and rock stars come in every day.

RIS: What sets Rock & Roll San Diego apart from other guys? ML: No place in San Diego is doing what we are. There are many great music facilities but our services are so complete it is really a one stop, mu sic heaven here. We are also ADA compliant. RIS: What do you offer that your competitors do not? ML: We are a tour ready facility designed for national touring bands. Our parking accommodates tour buses, trucks can be unloaded right at the rehearsal room door. We have showers & lockers, complete lunch rooms with kitchens, lounges, free wifi and music supplies they can purchase. Musicians can come in for a rehearsal or lesson and get their gear fixed at the same time so when they check out, it’s done.

“A person can walk in the door, learn music, make a recording and video here and even perform in our large concert hall.”

26 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

RIS: How did you get into the music industry? ML: I started as a kid digging the Beatles. I have been playing music basically my whole life. Except for a couple years in the Army when I was in my teens... Even there I jammed in the rec. center as often as possible. RIS: How has the music industry changed since you’ve been at it? ML: The internet has changed everything, I think for the better in most ways. Music is so accessible now that virtually anyone can record and put their music out there for others to hear. That was impossible before. The down part is; How do artists get paid when everything is free on the internet? I think that’s one of the reasons why concert ticket prices are so high now. RIS: What do you like most? ML: When I see people learn how to play. Then get a band together. Then get out and perform. It’s very inspiring to me. RIS: What do you like the Least? ML: The business part of running such a large operation is sometimes draining... RIS: What direction do you see Rock & Roll San Diego moving toward in the future? ML: Our goal is to bring our model to other cities, sometime down the road. RIS: What other music events do you support & why? ML: Rock and Roll San Diego partners with many events throughout the year. Time is hard to come by so we usually work with one or two a month. Our goal is to help other music companies and events be successful by providing professional assistance in production, and providing musicians and bands to meet their needs. RIS: Where are you guys located? ML: Right behind SOMA in the Sports Arena parking lot in Point Loma RIS: How can we follow Rock & Roll San Diego online? ML: www.rockandrollsandiego.com, @rockandrollsandiego on Facebook and twitter

Mark takes a minute in one of his state of the art recording studios

SOUND ADVICE

MUSIC

HEAR THIS

By Leslie Terhorst

EDITORS CHOICE - Mumford & Sons – Wilder Mind

Genre: Rock/Alt The long awaited rollout of the band’s banjo-free third album, Wilder Mind, will arrive May 4th. Every new track features drums played by Mumford (who started as a drummer as a teen) or Wilder Mind producer James Ford, best-known for his work with (Arctic Monkeys, Haim, Florence + The Machine). Marshall unreels epic, chiming electric-guitar leads while keyboard player Ben Lovett, explores deep-space textures and bassist Ted Dwane, locks in as part of an actual rhythm section. “We felt that doing the same thing, or the same instrumentation again, just wasn’t for us,” says frontman Marcus Mumford. “We’ve got a broader taste in music than just that.” Added Mumford bassist Ted Dwane, “None of us had really any interest in doing a sort of Babel 2. It was always going to be different.” Ever evolving the bands next venue seems to be taking them into the relm of hip-hop. Mumford continued, “I’ve been getting into that again recently. I’ve been hanging out with an amazing guy called 88-Keys to learn how to chop-up beats. That’s really fun for me. I don’t really care about how we’re seen right now, because I think the story of this band will be a long one. People are always going to say stuff in the moment, but I hope that the arc of the band will be interesting.” Things they are a changin’, for what may be the better. I enjoy them mixing it up and keeping it fresh, and look forward to the next adventure. In the mean time pick this one up.

Turbo Fruits – No Control

Genre: Alt/Garage/Rock

There’s no better way to have spent 4/20 then to download Turbo Fruits fourth album No Control is a solid 11-track collection of crisp, hook-filled garage-pop songs about love, drugs, death and other Rock-n-roll concerns. No Control, frontman Jonas Stein decided to separate from KoL’s label Serpents & Snakes to self-finance the record, preferring to have creative control. Produced by Patrick Carney of the Black Keys, the album breezes along like the springtime, balancing power-pop gems like the quit-while-we’re-ahead plea “Don’t Let Me Break Your Heart Again” with weightier fare like the alcoholic confession “Friends.” “No Control is my favorite Turbo Fruits album yet,” says Fruits singer/guitarist Jonas Stein. “We put some real heart and soul into it. Partying and getting laid is fun but this go around we had some real life heartache going on. I stayed sober for two months, and it really peeled the Band-Aid off of some deep seeded emotions.” So let roll a big fatty for Jonas, give him kudos for breaking out on his own, and kick back and enjoy. Oh yeah, and buy this one.

The Briggs – The Briggs

Genre: Alt/Punk

Brothers Joey and Jason have been releasing records and touring the world for over ten years with their signature punk rock style and are now excited for this new release on their own label. Joey had this to say about the EP: “These songs are very much autobiographical. I’ve been through some really big life changes in the past few years. I became a dad, I basically put my career on hold in order to be around for my family and as much as I wouldn’t change that fact, it was a major transition to go through. Coming from being on the road 8 months out of the year, to barely touring at all. Being in a group with 3 other dudes to doing my own thing. A lot of the subject matter is that, coming to terms with way things played out, becoming self aware of how all my bad habits have effected my life. Not all in just some super downer way, it’s just looking at everything and going, “Damn, this has been some shit! Alright” It’s fun, it’s upbeat, it’s from the heart. Bottom line is I miss fucking playing punk rock music. I love making music with my brother, I love screaming till my voice is gone. This life is all I know and I’m thankful for everything that I’ve been through throughout this whole process.” Couldn’t agree more Joey; glad to see you guys back.

SAFETY ORANGE

Q&A

Catching up with San Diego’s own Safety Orange Revolt In Style: How was 2014 for you? Safety Orange: Great! Was non-stop. We started rocking with a new drummer Jessie “Tato” Tate, and he’s been awesome. We moved our studio to Ocean Beach,Ca. We played around 150 shows in CA, AZ, UT, NV, ID, CO and Mexico, promoting our latest release “State Of Where I Am”. Also we’ve been writing songs for our next CD,and I have a new baby boy JET! So yeah, it was a crazy year. RIS: What are some of your plans for 2015? SO: Record another CD and play lots of shows RIS: How did you get into the business of playing music? SO: Well, it was kind of an accident, I started jamming with one of my buddies “Harry Elmore” after surf sessions or when it was flat. No big deal. Then we got asked to play a friends party, after the first song live I was hooked! Ever since that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. RIS: Who are some of your influences? SO: Bob Marley and the Beatles we’re probably the first big ones for me, but then came some hip hop and Sublime. And RHCP was a game changer for me, it was all about the high energy live show. RIS: Your last album you did a lot of mixing, not only lyrics from other songs, but styles as well. A little Reggae, hip-hop, rock, etc. How did you come up with the concept? SO: Another happy accident! We play a lot of covers live that we love from bands like sublime, pepper, 311, etc… but as a group our tastes our so varied from rock to rap to reggae and even metal that if we’re digging a song from any style we’ll just rock and put our own flare on it, for example we love The Cure so why not do a Cure song S.O. Stylee!! RIS: What are the plans on the next one? SO: Pretty much the same. Lot’s of different feels and styles, but hopefully take it up a notch sonically. And we are always trying to improve our writing and production skills. We do it all ourselves, we write the songs, records em, produce em, mixing em and release em all on our own little label “Wabasa Records”, so at the end of the day I wanna make a cd I can pop in (ok iTunes.lol) and be stoked on! (Yes, I like to listen to my own) And if other people love it too, everybody wins!! RIS: Where can people come to see you perform? SO: We play all over all the time. So just check our schedule www.safetyorange.com and see if we’re in your area, or better yet hire us to play WE LOVE PARTIES! RIS: Favorite places to eat? SO: I’ve been on a sandwich kick lately and I’m digging Chris’s Deli in Ocean Beach and also Deli Belly out in El Cajon by Greg’s house RIS: Favorite places to perform? SO: That’s a hard one. We play so many awesome places and our Safety Orange family is so supportive at all our shows, but if I had to pick one that is consistently packed and rocking I’d have to say Santa Fe Springs Swap meet! It’s one of our bigger shows usually, 300-500 people some times more and from the staff to the crowd everyone is amazing!! RIS: If you could play anywhere where would that be? SO: Where there are good people and good surf! I’m not picky, I’m just doing what I love.

GLYNN

CHUCK

JOB - Professional Waterman SPONSORS - Laird StandUp, Cobian USA HOME - Carlsbad, California FAVORITE BREAK - Cardiff Reef

Interview: Brian Terhorst Photo: Carolyn Moote

SPECIALIZING IN STAND UP PADDLE RACING, CHUCK PROMOTES HIS SPORT AND SPONSORS’ BRANDS TIRELESSLY - HE GIVES BACK TO THE SUP INDUSTRY ANY WAY HE CAN. HE IS A HUMBLE AND DESERVING CHAMPION THAT CALLS SAN DIEGO, HOME.

W

e first met Chuck Glynn at the Revolt Surf Series back in 2009. He was a standout athlete at the time and has since advanced in skill & knowledge to a point where multiple manufacturers are utilizing his skill to achieve top new designs on a number of products. From high end racing boards to state of the art paddles, Chuck has had a hand in design & testing. If he’s not competing somewhere on the planet against the best of the best, he’s teaching lessons to aspiring SUP’ers. We got a chance to catch up with him, here’s what we discussed: Revolt In Style: you’re just coming off a big win at Carman Islands Rum Run & more recently the Seaside Slide last weekend - are you taking it easy for a while? Chuck Glynn: The training continues... to ensure peaking at proper times for major events. RIS: Let’s talk about your new trainer Roch Frey - how’s he working out? CG: Roch is an inspiring individual. His willingness to share his wealth of knowledge and his passion for the sport with me is more then I could have ever asked for. I am very fortunate to be having Roch as one of my mentors through this stage in my life. RIS: Describe a typical day of training. CG: Training this early in the season is about building a base. Putting in the hours on the water without maxing out. My training is no secret. You can find it all at ridingbumps.com. RIS: Diet? Supplements? Roids? CG: Lol I try to eat healthier but not super strict on my diet. I do use Carbopro as my source of supplements and nutrition while training and racing. It’s easy on my stomach and keeps me fueled up.

RIS: Equipment? CG: I’m currently designing my gear with the help of Laird StandUp for both my boards and paddles. RIS: As for race strategy and tactics, what keeps you ahead of the competition? CG: For race strategy practice I like to paddle with groups of people and work with other paddlers to develop proper passing and drafting techniques. RIS: Who is your toughest opponent these days? CG: My toughest opponent these days is myself. Yes, there are tons of extremely talented athletes out there, but at the end of the day I have to live with myself. I will give it my all to the finish line for the win, but as long as I gave it my 100% effort, I’m content and take it as a learning experience. RIS: I know you have a passion for SUP Surf - what are your thoughts on the direction of the sport? CG: My passion for Stand Up surfing will always be my draw as a form of surfing. I personally would like to see the style and the art come back into the sport. The way judges are judging events, they’re looking for progressive surfing. Watching the events from an outside view it seems to be trending on the “herky jerky” side which I’m saddened to see. There are a few Stand up surfers out there that still keep the art and style a priority and just as progressive as those on the Stand up world tour. RIS: Do you see yourself as a complete Waterman? CG: No, I don’t see myself as a Complete waterman. I have been fortunate to be exposed to many different disciplines in the waterman world (Surfing, Standup paddling, Channel crossings, towing, hydro-foiling, big wave ridding, and bodysurfing) but in my opinion there is still so much out there to tackle to become a waterman.

RIS: What do you want to add to your already rich skillset? CG: I would like to add lifeguarding and some outrigger paddling in the near future. Both skills require a new perspective on reading the water that I would like to work on. RIS: What’s the best part of being a professional athlete? Worst? CG: The best thing about being a professional athlete is being able to provide for myself from one of my passions in life. On of the worst things would be having leave loved ones for an extended period of time for trips. Don’t get me wrong I love seeing the world but would also like to share the experiences when possible. RIS: You spend a lot of time on the road — what items are always with you? CG: I always carry pictures of my loved ones and my sudoko book. RIS: I know you’re involved with the Sunday Sunday Sunday Races in SD this summer — what can we expect to see with that new series? CG: You can expect to see an amazing event for standup paddling for all levels from beginners to advanced paddlers. The event will have plenty to offer for both the competitors and spectators so you can bring down the whole family without feeling like you will have to entertain. RIS: Shout out to any sponsors & loved ones? Would like to thank my family and friends for all their support, Laird Hamilton, Roch Frey, for being such great mentors for me and also providing their time knowledge on my journey. Laird Standup and Cobian USA for believing in WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM  33 me as my sponsors. Best gear on the market.

Rory Russell is the epitome of Hawaiian Surfer royalty - in the 60’s & 70’s he was a KING. Pipeline Masters winner in 1976 and 1977. Traveled the world as the face of Lightning Bolt. Held court as often and as frequently as he desired. Raging, loving, surfing like none before… an era of surfing history come and gone. Rory has come full circle and again shapes for Lightning Bolt - he rages, loves and surfs… just, on his new terms. Rory Russell: Have we met before? Revolt In Style: No, we have never met before. RIS: When were you born? RR: July 29th, 1953 Germany RIS: Are your parents German? RR: No, my Father was a highly decorated Army Colonel. He was stationed over there. Born in an army tent. Military field hospital. (Laughs) RIS: After Germany? RR: Fort Rylie, Kansas. Two to four years old. Then went to Carlyle, Pennsylvania. I had made it to the little league team, and I remember my Dad telling me we were going to Hawaii. My heart was broken - that I had to go to Hawaii. So, instead of becoming a baseball champion I ended up becoming a surfing champion. I got ripped off!! (Laughs) RIS: So, that’s what you wanted to be as a little boy? A baseball star? RR: Yes, I didn’t even know what surfing was. RIS: How old where you when you moved to Hawaii? RR: I was ten…turned eleven on the ocean. RIS: I know your Dad has passed away, but is your Mom still alive? RR: Yep. She was a school teacher in Laguna Beach for thirty years. Retired at the age of 80. Yeah, I will go surfing at Salt Creek.... and a lot of people will be paddling by me and will be like, ”How’s your Mom? She was my Teacher!” (Laughs) RIS: How cool! RR: Well, she was my high school teacher on North Shore…that was a bummer. RIS: Do you pray? RR: Pray all the time. Pray when I paddle out. Absolutely, I pray when I get caught on the inside. (Laughs) RIS: So you are the Ambassador for Lighting Bolt? RR: Yes. RIS: Who founded Lighting Bolt? RR: Gerry Lopez and Jack Shipleystarted it back in Honolulu. Kinda like..It was a bunch of rogue guys. It was when short boards came in and boards were changing so rapidly. It was not financially feasible to go to a shop to get a new board. A brand new board off the rack for 400 or 300 bucks. Then everything got shorter. Within a two to three year span, it changed as much as it ever did before. We took the old boards and peeled the glass back off of them and reshaped them. We couldn’t afford to experiment with something brand new cuz it might not work. There were a couple that didn’t work for sure but it was part of the learning process. We tried many different things. Lockers. Whales.

38 WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

Jack Shipley managed the Hobie Shop back in 1965... I remember my Dad brought my sister and I our first boards there. I called him Papa Bolt (Jack Shipley) He is one of the head judges in Hawaii. Triple Crown and all that. Been a judge forever... and his son is a judge now. I just love him to death He is like a dad to me, Papa Bolt. So, before I knew him as Pappa Bolt he was manager at the Hobie store. I would go into the store with my Dad look at all the boards lined up. I remember saying this is the one picking out a board and my Dad saying “It’s $400... I can’t do that.” I was all disappointed. Woke up Christmas morning there it was under the tree. So then I could go to Pipeline at 12 years old. Mom would take me down to the beach She had her fried chicken and bottle of ripple. It was two feet little but clean and nobody would be out. Then it all came true. From just my Mom on the beach to thousands on the beach. (Laughs) RIS: So your friends started Lighting Bolt and you were right there with them. RR: (Lopez) He was Batman and I was Robin. He was the King of Pipeline and I was the Prince. I was happy with that cuz everyone wants to shoot the King. RIS: How did you meet Lopez? RR: Surfing. First there was Jock Sullivan - before Gerry He was living on the north shore with his family. He was Mr. Pipeline after Brett Van Art . We moved next door to him (Jock). His brother and I went to high school So, here I am living next door to Mr. Pipeline. Surfing with him every day. So then I had Gerry Lopez the next Mr. Pipeline takes me under his wing. So, If I didn’t do it, I was pretty screwed up. (Laughs) You know what I mean? If you can’t get those guys how to show you how to do it; you don’t have a chance. RIS: Describe Lopez RR: Cool..real cool..solid inside. RIS: What is your role now with Lighting Bolt? RR: Just run around spread the Bolt. It’s such a Universal icon; it’s a natural symbol. It’s not like a brand. It is something everyone can identify with. It’s a mark It’s a bolt. People all over the world can identify with the Bolt all walks of life. Not everyone identifies with the Ripcurl but everyone identifies with the Lighting Bolt. It is the greatest logo in the world. So lucky I can make surfboards and be able to put it ( Bolt) on there. Surf boards look better; it’s amazing. RIS: In every picture over years, I see you on a Lightning Bolt board. What is it about these boards all these years? RR: Yep. Yeah it’s not the board. Each board is different a lot of different shapes shaped by different people. I like the energy from the Bolt. Makes me feel really good and positive. It’s a metaphysical connection there. RIS: How long have you been shaping? RR: 1972 - shaped my first board. I was a sculptor more than a shaper. Spent a lot of time on them. There is a lot to learn. RIS: Who got you into shaping? RR: Lopez, Wylie Kyle, Artman Wayne Santos, Mike Smith. We had a little shed

on the north shore everyone would just hangout - if we weren’t surfing. Taking boards apart & experimenting on them. It was the blind leading the blind. I kept breaking Lopez’s boards... So he was like.... Ah! make your own! So I did. He was with me starting out. It was cool ‘‘cause I knew what I wanted in a board. RIS: Two gifts of advice you would give people? RR: Two gifts I would give people? I would say, take them to see the whales and manta rays and teach someone how to surf. I am really good at teaching surfing. I get them to stand up! (Laughs) I remember my dad asking me what do you want to do with your life? I said I wanted to reach out touch persons heart bring a smile to their face and leave an indelible mark. But I do enjoy people man and it’s amazing what a just a little spark of positive to a person can do so much inside for them they don’t even know it and you don’t even know it half the time. Every little positive. Not enough positive in this world. Every little smile you give somebody just vibes generating positive thoughts to someone makes your life better so that is my stance. RIS: Grew up surfing the North Shore? RR: We would go up and down the north shore looking at the waves the whole north shore where ever the waves were in our Volkswagen six times a day from one end to the other checking the waves. RIS: So you consider Pipeline your favorite spot? All the pics I have seen you are at Pipeline. RR: I have surfed everywhere just as well as I surfed Pipeline. I do not consider myself a pipeline specialist. But I was one of the best at Pipeline for sure. It’s dangerous. RIS: Fav spot? RR: Padang, Bali RIS: Best friend? RR: I got tons of them. Don’t even know where to start. RIS: Did you train for surfing? RR: No just skateboarding. I built the first half pipe in Hawaii 24 ft. on the north shore. Perfect waves in the front yard and 20 foot half pipe in the backyard! It was happening!! I forgot all these things! Wow! Skateboarding was really good for my surfing. I skated as many parks as I could get to. I got a skateboard for Christmas about three years ago. RIS: Do you do yoga? RR: Sexual yoga you could say (Laughs) I stretch and I surf RIS: Diet? RR: No sausage, no sodas, lots of fruits, veggies, salad. I lost 80 pounds. I died about five years ago from congestive heart failure. I went on a trip, wasn’t feeling good, couldn’t breathe. Flew to Cali, girlfriend picked me up, I couldn’t walk, gasping for air, had fluid in my chest, no room in my lungs, went to mission Viejo hospital.... felt like it was my last breath. I remember putting on my gown and passing out. Doctor came in and said to my girlfriend “Is that Rory Russell?” and she said, “yeah” and he said “we better save him then.” He called three more doctors and two more nurses; they worked on me for about three and half hours. Woke up three days later. What the fuck? Mom, sister, girlfriend in the room. Then I had a whole new outlook on life - and then I really wanted to go surfing badly. RIS: How did it change your outlook? RR: Everything becomes more precious that’s for sure. You know what I was real comfortable with dying. I had no regrets. Me and God were fucking cool. Fuck I was cool with this. RIS: No regrets? RR: No, it’s all meant to be.
