I’M JUST SAYIN’...

PUBLISHER’S NOTE Greetings from REVOLT Anybody else feel like a surf? We need to paddle out like no one else’s business. It’s been a long winter, glad to put that behind us. We had a blast, spent some solid snow time, but I’m sure most of us are ready for some warm weather. The water should be heating up anytime now. Not loving the ‘ice cream headaches’. I need to grab a new springsuit. Man, it’ll be good to get in the water. I’m sure I’ll sit in the lineup waiting for a wave & contemplate all that’s been going on lately. The world is in chaos, the economy still stinks and our family is reeling from a big loss. Other than that, life is good. Seems like an earthquake is shaking up some poor indigenous population every week or so lately. I think it’s a warning from Mother Earth. She’s tired of our bullshit & she’s gonna shake us off her back (like so many fleas) if we’re not careful. We almost got blasted with a big one. Luckily it hit down El Centro way (for us, not for them) Chile had a bad one & the Haitians are still trying to climb out from under the rubble & red tape. Keep your thoughts with them, It’s far from back to normal. They can still use some love, if you have the means....donate! Crazy flooding and storms in the south, & how about that oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico? I think BP screwed the pooch on this one. Just how the hell do the Brits own an oil rig off our coast anyway? The oil is hitting land as we speak. We’ll just have to wait & see the repercussions from this bad boy! Poor little critters. Donate to the foundation of your choice, they’re gonna need all the help they can get. I can’t believe we let this happen in the first place...& they want to allow more offshore drilling? C’MON GUYS. Let’s do our part to help out our Mother Earth. Just cause Earth Day is behind us doesn’t mean we can lose sight. Let’s make everyday, Earth Day. This would be the ultimate Mother’s day gift and might save all our butts. I’m just sayin’. Trust me, she’ll be fine...we’ll just be gone. SO. The recession is not over. I don’t care what anyone says. We’re still being cautious. You may have missed us last month, I know we had a bunch of people looking us up online. We had more than 95,000 hits on www.revoltinstyle.com in April. Seems we have plenty of friends. Luckily when times are tough we have the ability to tighten the reigns & simply put out a magazine every other month (if necessary). That’s what we decided to do the last couple of issues instead of taking out a second mortgage. Leslie & I don’t sweat things, we just make it happen, like we have for the past five years. That’s why Revolt In Style has been in print for twenty five years, we’re not a bunch of greedy monkeys. But we’re back to every month for the rest of the year. I promise. The economy will naturally swing back as it does each spring, & hopefully PO’bama wont let things happen to his peeps (like the Greeks). Jesus, what a mess. I’m still hopeful that he’s going to get the U.S. on the right path. Oh, and a stupid typo sends the stock market into a 1000 point free fall? C’MON GUYS! Get your act together! I guess the biggest news from our camp is the new partnership with the Ultimate Boarder™. Take a look on page 13 & see what I’m talking about. Pretty cool for all our summer surf series competitors. I’m sure it’ll bring in a whole new batch of athletes to the events. Don’t forget the first event of the 2010 RSSS is June 12 at Crystal Pier. This year is gonna blow up. Wait till you see what we have in store this year. Like I mentioned before, we have had some crazy activity on our website. We have been busy updating regularly & posting events, contests & giveaways as fast as we can. I hope you all spend a few minutes/hours online & take advantage of the past issues, Live HD camera feeds of the ocean & the beautiful women of Revolt. The video & image galleries are a great way to burn up the hours at work. Feel free to send us your postings & comments as well. We’re always there for ya. On a sad note... I want to say goodbye to a truly amazing woman. Doris McCormick passed quietly in her sleep the evening of April 29. She was 95. She was my Gramma. She had a long and happy life & leaves behind many children, grandchildren & great grandchildren. I hope that I enjoy even a fraction of the love that she did in her lifetime. I feel terrible that my mother lost her mom. But, I know she’s comfortable with the fact Gramma is with Grampa now. I have to thank Leslie for insisting that we stop off and see Gramma this year on one of our ski trips up North. I mentioned our visit with her in the last issue of Revolt. She lived in Sonora Ca. She was fairly self sufficient, living in her own apartment in an assisted living community. She seemed so happy with life, family, her friends, etc. We spent hours with her listening to some amazing stories of a simpler time with a huge loving family. Thankfully Leslie was rolling video, so we have some great footage of our last visit together. What a treat. What a great woman. She will be greatly missed by many. I know she’s looking down on us right now & smiling. Bye Gramma. Peace, B & L

How common is prostate cancer? • Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America, affecting 1 in 6 men. • In 2009, more than 192,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and more than 27,000 men will die from the disease. One new case occurs every 2.7 minutes and a man dies from prostate cancer every 19 minutes. • It is estimated that there are more than 2 million American men currently living with prostate cancer.

How does prostate cancer compare with other cancers? A non-smoking man is more likely to develop prostate cancer than he is to develop colon, bladder, melanoma, lymphoma and kidney cancers combined. In fact, a man is 35% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than a woman is to be diagnosed with breast cancer Sponsorship opportunities and foursomes are still available. ENVIRONMENT

MOTHER EARTH NEWS OBAMA PISSES OFF ENVIRONMENTALISTS

Twitter from Bill Maher: “Every asshole who ever chanted ‘Drill baby drill’ should have to report to the Gulf coast today for cleanup duty.”

On Wednesday, March 31, Obama announced support for the potential expansion of offshore oil and gas drilling in America. His proposal would open parts of the Atlantic coast, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and parts of the north shore of Alaska to exploration. In proposing this major expansion of offshore oil and gas development, President Obama set out to fashion a carefully balanced plan that would attract bipartisan support for climate and energy legislation while increasing production of domestic oil. Environmental groups had harsh words in return: “It makes no sense to threaten the East Coast of America with spills and other drilling disasters when we’re about to unleash the real solutions to oil dependence -- cleaner cars and cleaner fuels,” said Anna Aurilio, who directs the Washington office of the nonprofit Environment America. The Surfrider Foundation released this statement: “We view anything short of a complete reinstatement of the federal moratorium on offshore oil drilling a loss. While we are pleased that the coastal waters off the west coast will not see any new offshore oil drilling

SPILL BABY SPILL? (for the time being), we view this as simply maintaining the status quo that has been afforded us for the last 30 years. By opening up the mid-Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and north coast of Alaska to new offshore oil drilling and exploration, the Minerals Management Service not only places our environment at risk, it threatens the livelihoods of millions of Americans who rely on clean, healthy, oil-free oceans and beaches to support fishing, tourism and other industries.”

Gulf of Mexico Oilspill Spreads On Tuesday, April 20, Deepwater Horizon, the giant technically-advanced oil rig exploded killing 11 workers, and sank two days later. It is leaking an estimated 210,000 gallons) per day through a pipe about 5,000 feet below the surface. Floating booms have been deployed, suspect chemicals are being sprayed (to disperse the oil), controlled burning of surface oil, and the delivery of a four story dome structure to cap the well, all in an attempt to contain the oil before it spreads further along the Gulf Coast, The Gulf is a critical habitat for 400 species of birds, fish and other marine life is threatened, at a critical breeding time; up to half of the U.S. supply of some popular seafood, like shrimp, oysters and bluecrabs at risk; and oil-soaked creatures have already begun washing ashore. The spill’s damage has been exacerbated by the depth of the drilling, causing the oil to spread across a wider area and impeding clean-up efforts. Response teams failed to seal off the wellhead with a remote vehicle about a mile under the surface of the water -- an effort

akin to “putting a lid on a peanut jar from thousands of feet away,” BP says that it may take as long as three months to stop the leak. That threatens to make the spill the most damaging since the Exxon Valdez accident off the coast of Alaska in 1989. BP said it had plugged one of three leaks caused by the explosion at the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, but the well continues to spew oil A four story containment dome arrived at the Deepwater Horizon site May 6 and is expected to be in place for operations to begin by May 10. It is not clear whether this will work, as it has never been tried before, but it is the best shot at quickly reducing the flow of oil. The success of the containment dome method is especially critical. The full extent of the damage will not be known for some time.

OIL SPILL AS SEEN FROM SPACE

Size: 13,104,000 gallons Continuing rate of spill: 1,092,000 gallons per day.

NOT IN CALYFORNIA

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he will find another way to help close the state’s $20 billion budget deficit after the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico caused him to withdraw his support for a plan to expand oil drilling off the California coast.

Satellite imagery showed the leading edge of the oil slick may have traveled into the Mississippi Delta and small islands off the coast of Louisiana. Officials said the images also show oil drifting to the south, toward the Loop Current, which could carry oil toward Florida.

With Global Clean Water by Steve Nickell

“I love water,” says Donovan Bailey, when asked what drew him to the subjects of clean water and water conservation advocacy. Growing up in Pacific Beach, a seaside enclave near the city of San Diego, California, Bailey says he spent his youth around water “ditching school and surfing.” After more than fifteen years in the hospitality industry and tech sector, when examining where he felt he could make a difference in the world, his passion for water seemed a natural fit. In 2008, he founded Global Clean Water (GCW), a non-profit organization dedicated to “bringing awareness and clean water solutions along with sanitation and hygiene education practices to the developing world.”

HOME BREWS & GARDENS CAN HELP Have you ever wanted to have your own lush, vibrant garden, but haven’t felt like you had the space, time or resources to do it? Have you ever started your own garden and ended up with nothing to show for it? No juicy tomatoes, no crisp lettuce, just wasted time and shattered dreams? So your garden isn’t working out, you’ve spent the whole day in the hot sun wasting time, you go inside and pour yourself a beer. You look at the beer and realize it’s fizzy, pale yellow, doesn’t taste like anything and really isn’t that satisfying. At this point it looks like things couldn’t get worse, you’ve failed as a gardener and not only that, the beer you have sucks. Before you go to the medicine cabinet and just end it all, know that there is a new local business that can help you become an expert gardener! Not only that, they can teach you how to brew your own delicious craft brew at home! Really?! Yes, this is the new reality at Home Brews and Gardens, a new hobby store in North Park that provides for all your gardening and home brewing needs. They have everything from organic to hydroponic gardening systems plus everything you need to make your own beer and wine at home. Did you know that there is a way for you to grow delicious fruits and vegetables all year long, with minimal effort and outstanding results? Hydroponics, a method of soil-less gardening, has been used since the early 1600’s to efficiently yield large crops while using less water than traditional agriculture. Nutrient solution is delivered directly to a plant’s root system through a variety of customizable methods. This allows for optimized feeding of the plants in the system. The result is larger, healthier plants that have less problems with root-born diseases, fungus and other pests.

Hydroponics uses less water than traditional gardening methods because the same water can be recirculated in the system for weeks at a time. Any water removed from the system can be used to water other plants in pots or in the ground. This makes hydroponics a very green method of gardening with little waste involved. Not only that you will be growing your own food, making you more self-sufficient and minimizing your expenses.

According to a 2008 report from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF’s Joint Monito ing Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation, nearly one billion people, the vast majority of which live in Western Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, exist without access to sanitary drinking water. Bailey spent fourteen months in India studying the problem first-hand and returned to San Diego with a mission and a multi-faceted plan to raise global awareness of the pervasive water crisis occurring virtually everywhere on the globe. The focus, he says when asked about the obstacles to success, needs to be on changing firmly entrenched behavior. Bailey quotes an Indian man who once told him that changing the way many people live will be like “straightening a dog’s tail; you can pull it down, but it will curl back up.” With this in mind, Bailey decided that children, rather than adults, were the key to a successful campaign of awareness and education. To that end, Global Clean Water has begun enlisting the aid of artists from around the world to create a broad spectrum of content designed to raise awareness in children of the need for water sanitation and conservation. A children’s book author, freelance graphic designers, and even a New Zealand-based songwriter have all committed to contributing their talents, something Bailey feels is

more important than a donation of cash. “For me, it’s not about how much money one can raise,” he says, “but personal action.” To insinuate the cause of clean water and conservation into the collective consciousness of the world’s children, he envisions a series of books, a collection of songs, and even an animated television series starring “Mr. H20,” a water drop-shaped character Bailey conceived of in India (Mr. H20 was actually painted on a wall in an Indian hospital) that doubles as a sort of mascot for GCW and features prominently on the organization’s website. Despite the scope and immediacy of the problem, Bailey is quick to insist he is not political, preferring the long-term approach of education over nearterm activism. It is a plan that goes beyond the slick advertising campaign or the digging of wells in every yard. Global Clean Water’s idea of success is for every child to take its message back to their parents in the hope that they can straighten the dog’s tail... and keep it straight.

ENVIRONMENT

YOU CAN DO IT! LOCAL MAN MAKES A SPLASH

Did you Know?

Every day, over one billion people face a catastrophic health and economic crisis due to lack of clean water. Waterborne diseases are responsible for nearly 10 million deaths each year, 5,000 child deaths every day and 80% of the developing world’s illnesses. Clean water scarcity and contaminated water is spreading rapidly and will continue to do so unless corrective action is taken. The crisis is one of water governance and insufficient financing for clean water supplies and services. The technology and vision exist, yet the funding and unity among global partners is lacking. You can make a difference! For more information about Donovan Bailey and Global Clean Water, visit http://www.globalcleanwater.org or their Twitter feed at http://twitter.com/ globalcleanH2O.

HYBRID

2011 Honda CR-Z sport hybrid coupe

DECISIONS, DECISIONS... The problem with some hybrid cars is that they’re often more hybrid than they are car. What sets hybrids apart from regular cars is that they essentially use two powertrains, an electric motor and a gasoline engine. The electric motor draws its power from a large battery pack that is recharged by a gas engine and braking. There are, of course, some possible disadvantages that need to be considered when buying a new hybrid car. Cost, range, lower acceleration, aesthetics.... The 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid- Considering the gas and electric tag team happening under its hood, the Fusion is a well-put-together vehicle with an excellent cabin tech package. Starting at around 28,000, tax incentives drop that price even lower. Under the Fusion’s hood is Ford’s 2.5-liter Hybrid Powersplit drivetrain. Cutting through the marketing-speak, this means that there’s a 156-horsepower 2.5-liter lean-burning, Atkinson cycle gasoline engine sharing motivational duties with a 106-horsepower AC electric motor. The Fusion Hybrid is able to run under pureelectric (EV) power, gasoline power, or a blend of the two. EPA-estimate 41 City/36 Hwy mpg. Consider the Fusion’s low sticker price and high value, and the hybrid goes from being a good car to being a damn good car. Chevy Volt is an electric car that can create its own electricity. Plug it in, let it charge overnight, and it’s ready to run on a pure electric charge for up to 40 miles gas and emissions free. After that, Volt keeps going, even if you can’t plug it in. Volt uses a range-extending gas generator that produces enough energy to power it for hundreds of miles on a single tank of gas. An iPhone Application will let Chevrolet Volt owners use their phones to start up, lock & unlock doors, charge up the car, and even turn on the air conditioner at any time even from miles away. The program provides real-time updates on how much juice is in the battery via text message or email, and will even tell you how much gas you’re using when the engine kicks in. Priced at around 35,000. The 2011 Honda CR-Z sport hybrid coupe, making its U.S. production debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, introduces sleek styling and sporty handling to the hybrid world. And yes, affordability. Set to go on sale late summer in the U.S., the CR-Z is powered by a 1.5-liter iVTEC engine with Honda’s compact and lightweight Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid-electric system. The two-passenger CR-Z introduces a new three-mode drive system that allows the driver to select between Sport, Econ (Economy) and Normal driving modes. The standard six-speed manual transmission is engineered for optimal acceleration performance in gears one through five and for optimal fuel economy in sixth gear. The Sport mode enhances multiple vehicle systems for performance including the engine throttle responsiveness, electric power steering effort and the electric motor power assist.Pricing expected to start at just over $20,000

San Diego’s own APTERA 2e

ELECTRIC APTERA 2e The Obama Administration has established a goal for the U.S. transportation industry: put 1 million plug-in hybrid cars on the road by 2015; cars built in America that get up to 150 miles per gallon. In 2011 Aptera Motors in Vista, CA, will begin manufacturing its 2e plug-in, an all-electric three-wheeled two-seater that gets the equivalent of over 200 mpg, goes 100 miles on a single charge and has a top speed of 90 mph. The ultra-light 2e weighs 1,700 pounds, carries safety features such as a race car-like passenger safety cell, airbags and a front crumple zone, and has already graced the cover of Revolt In Style magazine, Popular Mechanics and was named by Time magazine among its “Best Inventions of 2008.” Aptera can also boast a brief cameo in the latest Star Trek movie last year. Aptera management projects the 2e will cost between $25,000 and $40,000, depending on options, and with additional models and powertrains like the 2h (two-passenger hybrid) already under development, the company expects to create some 1,500 jobs locally and more than 100,000 vehicles in the next five years. “The 2e is as safe as any car on the road, and its groundbreaking aerodynamics helps it to fly past fueling stations,” says CEO Paul Wilbur. “We’re taking a pair of our vehicles to Washington to show first-hand how great mileage and innovative technology have combined to create a vehicle that’s priced to fit within most family budgets. We’ll show how the 2e helps define energy efficiency and can be a valuable component of President Obama’s green economy.” For more go to www.aptera.com

2012 TESLA Model S & 2011 TESLA Roadster With a range up to 300 miles and 45-minute QuickCharge, the Model S can carry five adults and two children in quiet comfort – and you can charge it from any outlet, without ever stopping for gas. World’s first mass-produced electric vehicle offers performance, efficiency and unrivaled utility for a base price of $49,900*, making it the only car you’ll ever need. The two-seat roadster model, a soft-top sports car, adapted from certain components of the Lotus Elise, will do 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, kicking tail on cars that cost twice its $109,000 sticker price. The recently released Sport Model, at nearly $130,000, shaves another quarter-second or so from the 0 to 60 performance. The Roadster’s audacious acceleration comes from a 185-kilowatt (248-horsepower) electric motor powered by a 53-kilowatt-hour battery pack that provides 200 or so miles of range. The Tesla Roadster makes shifting gears, watching a tachometer, and listening to the note of a combustion engine seems tedious and old-fashioned. www.teslamotors.com NISSAN Leaf Nissan recently announced a purchase price of $32,780, or a monthly lease of $349 per month. A vast array of federal and state consumer incentives, including a $7,500 tax credit, will also reduce the total purchase price. California incentives include a $5,000 statewide tax rebate and carpool-lane access. In California, which is expected to be the biggest market for the Leaf, the combined federal and state tax credits would effectively reduce the total purchase price to the low-$20,000s. Nissan will offer personal charging docks, which operate on a 220-volt supply, as well as their installation. Nissan is providing these home-charging stations, which will be built and installed by AeroVironment, as part of a one-stop-shop process that includes a home assessment. The average cost for the charging dock plus installation will be $2,200.

READY. SET. BUILD. What if designing your own electric vehicle was as simple as picking out the parts and plugging them together? Trexa is aiming to make that dream a reality as they unveil the world’s first fully-electric vehicle development platform. This svelte allwheel drive platform includes everything you need to make a vehicle go – a battery, driveline, and power electronics. The design of everything else is up to you, and its modular nature means that it can be tailored to virtually any application – from futuristic connected tram systems for commercial fleets, to high-performance hot rods, to neighborhood-friendly EV’s perfect for a jaunt around town. The Trexa platform offers an unprecedented level of versatility because it contains an entire vehicle’s drivetrain within one low-profile enclosed structure. The platform is highly scalable, so features such as range, suspension, torque, acceleration, and top speed can all be tailored to suit the vehicle’s intended purpose. For starters, the standard platform has an acceleration of 0-60mph in 8 sec, a top speed of 100mph, a 105 mile range, and a charge time of 4 hours (based upon an efficiency of 200Wh per mile — comparable to a Prius in electric mode). Working with this simple streamlined platform, designers can build virtually any vehicle they can dream up. Trexa is also offering a vehicle developer’s kit complete with a docking system, steering wheel/pedalbox, and CAD models for designing on the platform, which makes this system as plug-and-play as vehicle design gets. The Platform you see above is going to have a starting price of $15,999, this is startlingly lower than most industry guestimations and depending on the cost of the vehicle “upper” or body we could see Trexa Platform based vehicles for as little as $30,000. You can keep up to date on all the latest developments from the Trexa team by following them on Twitter and Facebook. www.trexa.com

ZERO MOTORCYCLES Santa Cruz, based Zero says theirs are the first electric motorcycles to pass the safety standards and achieve EPA certification. The company is claiming a 455-mpg equivalent for both the S and DS, which use the same lithium ion battery and 4 kWh electric motor. Their 2010 product line, including the Zero S, DS, X, and MX. Primary new features are said to be increased power for higher acceleration, and a new battery pack design. A new statewide rebate program that gives consumers $1,500 off the purchase of an electric cycle. With the federal tax credit, consumers can reap savings of $2,500. Besides being a low emissions vehicle, an electric motorcycle requires no gas, oil changes or tune ups, so it will potentially save riders maintenance costs in the long run. There’s also no smell of spent exhaust or burnt oil. It’s a plug-and-ride relationship. Zero’s S and DS models have 4KW batteries that recharge in about four hours from a standard 110-volt outlet.

Zero S: Priced at $8,995 (after 10% U.S. federal tax credit), maximum speed of 67 miles/hr and a range of up to 50 miles. The Zero DS has similar specs and the same price. KNIGHT & CARVER

WIND GROUP

LOCAL YACHT BUILDERS BRANCH OFF IN WIND MACHINES Knight & Carver, legends in the yacht building world, now take their place among the finest builders of wind machine components. Giant blades in particular. Kinght & Carver Wind Group has become well-respected in the wind energy industry for its innovation and quality, working closely with the world’s largest wind energy producers. Knight & Carver is an internationally recognized wind blade fabricator and service producer for utilityscale wind plants. For 30 years, the company has built and repaired large yachts as well as other vessels.Kinght & Carver Wind Group evolved from the company’s composite expertise in the boating industry. Since that time, Knight & Carver has repaired and rebuilt thousands of blades and fabricated thousands more. Recently, the Wind Group’s capacity has been increased by expanding into large blade testing, engineering and onsite service work.

HOW DO YOU SERVE THE WIND INDUSTRY AND HOW DO THOSE SERVICES ENHANCE THE GENERATION OF WIND ENERGY? Knight & Carver Wind Group is able to repair and rebuild wind blades that otherwise would be discarded. In this way, the life of a blade can be extended longer than its originally intended lifespan. K & C can quickly replace a tip due to lightning damage -- minimizing down time and restoring the turbine to life within a few days. By inspecting blades and finding defects early, larger repairs are avoided --saving the owner expensive repairs. Recoating blades can minimize the effects of ultra-violet rays or moisture that would otherwise shorten the lifespan of the blade when the original coating has worn away or failed. The leading edge of the blade can be restored to its original shape after eroding -- reducing lost productivity due to an inefficient airfoil.

WHAT IS THE COMPANY’S HISTORY? Knight & Carver was founded in 1971 as a yacht construction firm in San Diego. Soon, the company was regarded as one of the nations leading custom boat-builders, specializing in luxury yachts and commercial catamarans along with large-vessel repair. In 1997, using boat-building techniques with composite construction, the company expanded its operations into wind blades, with several small repair and new-build projects. In recent years, the Wind Group has become wellknown in the wind energy industry for its innovation and quality, working closely with the worlds largest wind energy producers.

DOES YOUR COMPANY HAVE PLANS FOR FABRICATING NEW WIND BLADE DESIGNS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO FEATURE? Yes, Knight & Carver has developed a new swept adaptive-twist wind blade. This blade has been specifically developed for low-wind speed sites. A longer blade of this type can be installed on a turbine, increasing the output of electricity during low wind -- yet not increasing the loads on the machine in strong winds. The design was funded in a cost-share project with the Department of Energy and Sandia National Laboratories of Albuquerque, NM. When tooling is complete this spring, two 90 test blades will be constructed. The first will be static-tested to determine the twist response and deflection. The second blade will be sent to NREL for a fatigue test.

HOW DID YOUR COMPANY BECOME INVOLVED IN BLADE REPAIR? In 1997, an owner of several wind farms inquired whether Knight & Carver, as a well-known yacht builder with experience in composites, could solve structural problems the firm was having with its wind blades. The answer was a resounding yes, because the composite technology required to repair wind blades was surprisingly similar that of vessel hull construction. Thus, Knight & Carver was able to successfully repair the blades and the company soon launched a Wind Blade Division, specializing in repair and production.

WHAT IS THE COMPANY’S BEST NEW WIND PRODUCT/SERVICE? Without a doubt, I’d have to say our Blade Repair Service. Our company builds new blades and provides field work by going to wind farms and repairing blades on-site. Also, repair work is performed at the San Diego facility, along with design, mold construction, retooling and production. Our services also include blade inspection and testing. FAQs

Q: What is Suspension Training? A: A new category of exercise for athletes of all abilities that leverages one’s own bodyweight and gravity to develop strength, balance, flexibility and joint stability simultaneously. Q: Why is Suspension Training different than Traditional Exercise? ATHLETES

Red Bull Surfing Project Air There’s a sign at the entrance to the basketball court at the Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation facility near Byron Bay, Australia that reads, “No Skateboarding!”
Which is ironic really, given that half the court lies hidden beneath one of the most unique skateboard ramps in the world.
The ramp boasts two roll-ins that dip down from opposite sides toward symmetrical wave-shaped bowls. The bowls propel the rider towards ‘lips’ which sit at a mellow 30-degrees and can be attacked frontside or backside. Beyond these, a large pit awaits, filled with spongy cubes of foam, the kind daring freeride moto-x freaks use to cushion their falls when practicing new tricks. Measuring seven-feet at its highest point, the ramp is embryonic compared to the awe-inspiring creations of the X-Games and Dew Tours, but it has not been designed for skateboarders. No, this ramp has been designed for surf-stars and Red Bull Surfing’s Project Air has drawn them in droves. There’s Mick Fanning from the Gold Coast, the reigning two-time Men’s ASP World Champion. There’s former Women’s World Champion Sofia Mulanovich from Peru. Young Aussie superstars Sally Fitzgibbons and Julian Wilson are both in attendance. Then there’s the Tahitian ‘Spartan’ Michel Bourez, Frenchman Tim Boal and South Africa’s wunderkind, Jordy Smith. Plus a heap of Red Bull’s junior team.
It’s an inspiring talent pool to say the least, bubbling to the point of overflow.

Next to the ramp is a bungy trampoline, which if you’ve never seen one is really something else. With its mess of legs and cables jutting awkwardly skyward, it kind of resembles a giant spider and is a training apparatus more common to sports like gymnastics. Appropriately harnessed, it allows athletes to leap and perform multiple backward and forward flips. According to people that know, like Red Bull’s High Performance Coach, Per Lundstam and High Performance Manager, Andy Walshe, who share around 20 years experience training with Olympic athletes, the bungy tramp is an excellent way to finetune one’s spatial awareness, and even if you make mistakes you never seem to land flat on your face. Not far away, waiting just above the high-tide line on a long stretch of deserted beach are two jet skis fitted with water-ski style tow-ropes. Boasting a grunt-worthy 240 horsepower engine each, they’re aquatic beasts that have more than enough muscle to whip even the world’s heaviest surfers, like Jordy, into anything resembling a wave at speeds they could never acquire by natural means. And assuming your pilot likes you and has nothing better to do, they’ll whip you into more waves in 20mins than you could catch on any crowded day.

At a glance – and it attracted many from curious local residents – Lake Ainsworth has been transformed into a veritable surfing wonderland.

30  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

The underlying premise of Red Bull Surfing Project Air is simple enough; via repetition and guidance within a controlled environment, the surfers will be able to attempt and refine aerials that would require months or even years of unaided effort in the open water. Borrowing training concepts first introduced when Red Bull built double Olympic gold medal winner Shaun White a private half pipe in the Utah mountains, Red Bull Surfing Project Air is an evolution of the company’s pioneering effort with its surfers last year in Indonesia’s Mentawai Islands. There the surfing performance coaches championed the introduction of GPS technology to measure paddle speeds, wave velocity and maneuver trajectories, along with hydration and lactic acid tests to measure the surfers’ fitness and recovery rates. At the height of the venture, superstar Jordy also pulled off one of the most stunning moves ever executed in the sport; a twisting, corked rodeo flip. Captured by cameramen using state-of-the-art high-speed equipment, the vision won “Clip of the Year” at the industry’s esteemed Surfer Poll awards night, yet more ominously, Jordy’s feat signaled the beginning of a new wave in performance surfing.

Surf Coach Andy King was along for the ride in the Mentawais and also spent an enviable 10 months traveling the 2009 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Men’s World Tour. Beyond the glitzy facade of exotic locales and big-money rivalries, King uncovered a rift that exists between the sport’s most technically adept performers and an outmoded judging criteria. “What shocked me most was the frustration and resentment so many guys had towards the judges and the judging system,” explains King, who as a former competitor sympathizes with the highs and lows of his bunch. “There are the World Champions of the sport, like Mick (Fanning), who see it for what it is and have worked out how to play the game and have mastered it. Then there are the young crew coming through, like Jordy, who are bringing with them entirely new moves but are not necessarily being rewarded for them, or they haven’t perfected them to the point where they’re willing to risk them in competition. So

what we decided was to continue to build on the mental and physical aspects we touched on in the Mentawais, but also introduce more technical elements based around the aerial; which is what we’ve done to an extent by bringing in the bungy tramp and the customized skate ramp.”

The timing of Red Bull Surfing’s Project Air is auspicious. At the end of the 2009 season, an ASP committee that included surfers’ representatives and the judges, reviewed and amended the criteria to include elements such as “flow” and “variety”. Plus in 2010 they will apply a greater emphasis to “innovative and progressive maneuvers”. A press statement from the ASP included a comment from then

Head Judge, Perry Hatchet: “It’s paramount that the ASP Judging Criteria evolve to reflect the ever-progressing envelope of high-performance surfing.” Depending on whom you talk too, however, opinion is still divided on what the best or “ever progressing” surfing entails. Aspiring grommets, like 15 year-old Kolohe Andino, who traveled from the USA to attend the Red Bull Surfing Project Air camp, unabashedly picks holes in the system. He may still be too young to drive, yet Kolohe is already learning to fly, metaphorically speaking of course. “I think right now, the judges don’t discriminate enough. The more technical you are, the higher you should be scored. If someone does a stalefish grab, which is probably the hardest grab to do and someone else does an air reverse, they would probably give them the same score. But it should be a three-point spread, at least. It’s probably just because they (the judges) don’t know the difference,” he states.
Mick Fanning, the reigning Men’s World Champion is slightly more diplomatic.
“It’s natural that we look to the surfers who have come before us and then try to put our own spin on things. It’s evolution. But I also look at what younger guys like Julian (Wilson) and Jordy are doing in the air and knowing they can do crazy flips and stuff, it definitely opens your blinkers. And kids like Kolohe are probably looking at them too and going, ‘Oh, I can do it better than that!’ It’s progression in sport, but there’s always that tendency for young crew to learn to run before they can walk. You need to have the complete package.”

he was a kid, even if it has been a few years. After a cautious start, it’s not long before the big South African is sweating up a storm. The grommets, however, dive straight in. Kolohe, Conner Coffin and Evan Geiselman, all from the USA, have grown up with skateboard ramps in their backyards and they’re not even wearing t-shirts, let alone helmets or any protective padding. As they go trick for trick, attempting all manner of grabs and the occasional bold variation that they’re forced to abort, they’re heckling the hell out of each other. It certainly appears as if they’ve the potential to change the sport, even if it will take them a few more years of running.

But hands-down the greatest progress come from the girls, Sofia Mulanovich and Sally Fitzgibbons. Sofia graduates from “petrified” and “shi!#ing myself” to rolling in and airing into the pit with just a few days of practice, while via Sally we see the purist intentions of the camp truly manifest. Literally within minutes of executing a clean ‘Indy’ grab into the foam pit one afternoon, Sally swaps her helmet and skateboard for a wetsuit and surfboard, and replicates the move with flawless precision in the briny after being whipped into a wave by a jet ski. The move elicits a wild round of hoots from the gallery assembled on shore to watch. “The idea for us is to just put these sorts of things in front of them so they can get a taste; but really we’re just scratching the surface with this,” explains Walshe, who usually cheers loudest when he spots progress. But in this instance, the loudest applause is from Sally’s peers, including World Champ Fanning and Jordy, the bloke responsible for the perfect rodeo flip. If someone asked you if Red Bull Surfing’s Project Air experiment is working, what more proof would you need?

With just two weeks before he paddles out at his homebreak of Snapper Rocks to begin his third title defense, Fanning is having a blast on the imported toys, but is still taking precautions. On the ramp he dons wrist protectors, knee and elbow pads, as do most of the elite crew. Jordy’s a little more confident and reveals that he used to skate quite a bit when

PASSION. STYLE. INNOVATION. For Consuul, these are more than just words; they are its roots and its future. Born and raised in Southern California, Travis Lubinsky and Trevor Walls grew up around the latest trends in apparel, music, and style. Yet, when they were students at San Diego State University, they found themselves limited in their self-expression. The styles and trends that they grew passionate about were no longer fitting of their lifestyles. This laid the groundwork for Consuul. Consuul began as a small printing operation, born out of necessity, in Trevor’s kitchen. Initially, they printed t-shirts for their friends and family, but soon Travis and Trevor discovered that there was a large market for custom apparel in San Diego, and no company to fill it. Consuul started to take on jobs from local organizations and businesses and soon grew too large for Trevor’s kitchen. With help from their friends and families, the boys of Consuul decided to take the organization to the next level and establish Consuul LLC.

The warehouse houses the digital printing, graphic design, sales, and administrative divisions. In addition to their facilities, Consuul’s clientele has grown and diversified. Aside from Consuul’s largely successful Fraternity and Sorority printing campaign, Consuul has also created custom products for schools, local bands, and even billboard topping artists. The company has also been involved in designing, and creating, merchandise for local philanthropic organizations, medical practices, and a wide range of other groups throughout the nation. However, Consuul is always striving to reach the next level. Apart from purely end-user printing, Consuul has created their own brand and culture of young, talented, high-energy team of entrepreneurs based out of Southern California. RONNIE RENNER FREERIDE TOUR Red Bull Kicks Off The Tour In Ocotillo Wells Photos by: Chris Tedesco

On March 26 - 28, thousands of off-roaders loaded up their RVs, dirtbikes and sand machines and descended into the dust of Ocotillo Wells, Calif. - an iconic desert playground that’s world-renowned as a top off-roading destination. When they got there, they were greeted not only with near-perfect weather, but also with the presence of some of the top names in freeriding - Ronnie Renner, Tommy Clowers, Jeff Tilton, Myles Richmond, Drake McElroy, Steve Hauglstein and more. These riders were all in Ocotillo Wells for the first stop of the Red Bull Ronnie Renner Freeride Tour, a three-stop tour designed to give off-roading enthusiasts the chance to meet, party and ride with the pros. Throughout the weekend, riders stumbled upon the Red Bull Oasis and were invited in to interact with Renner and Co. - getting autographs, photos, and face time with these motocross icons. They were also invited to ride with Renner and his crew around the desert and watch them push the limits of freestyle motocross on natural terrain. On Saturday night, after two days of riding, Renner hosted and emceed a blow-out party, which naturally featured a few dance challenges from those familiar with Renner’s moves off the bike. The Red Bull Ronnie Renner Freeride Tour has another stop at Pismo Beach / Oceano Dunes on Memorial Day Weekend.

HOW THE WEST(COAST) WAS WON English Kate is a British expatriate whose worldly travels have brought her to San Diego. Most recently of Antwerp, Belgium, she offers a fresh global perspective by breathing new life into an act born out of defiance and rebellion that has somehow slipped from the seedy punk underbelly smack dab into the main stream. As our collective consciousness expands, it is critical to achieve and maintain a culturally aware world view. This type of mind set lends itself to the traditions of tattooing, piercing and adornment. Facing forward yet always remembering where she came from, Kate ensures that these traditions continue with integrity. In a world where quality is expected and demanded, the public should know that her two shops are there to provide the best. She does not mix traditions by giving you a “Jack of all trades” shop. Each location is dedicated to its specific practice. You can be assured that each is a specialty shop, giving San Diegans and visitors alike the expert care and attention they deserve. When the health and safety of your body is concerned, English Kate & crew are there to ease your mind. They strive to provide the best possible service, delivered professionally by knowledgeable expert staff & just in time for summer!!

Downtown Tattoo Parlour Tattooing is an ancient art whose origins are steeped in ritual and ceremony. Their talismanic qualities are symbolic representations of the wearer, serving as declarations of identity and extensions of the ones character. Whether obtained as memorials, as badges of travel and trial, out of cathartic need, aesthetic adornment, or even for fun, their indelible nature endows them with a power no other discipline of art possesses – they are alive.

36  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

But the visceral appeal of tattooing’s mystery and esotericism finds itself taking a back seat to the exploitative worlds of ever-increasing commercialism and materialism; relegated to a marketing device for tattoo-themed apparel companies and liquor brands, and to drum up ratings for preposterous reality television shows. Fighting for a place amongst all things vapid and synthetic, the craft and significance of the tattoo itself is ever more overshadowed by the contrived “tattoo lifestyle.” Sadly, many shops - especially newer ones - are treading this path created by the media and merchandising sensationalism of tattooing. The fundamental foundations of the craft, artistic and technical skill often fall to the wayside in lieu of flamboyant imagery and promotion. The Downtown Tattoo Parlour doesn’t put the cart before the horse when it comes to tattooing. Strong, clean custom work is drawn to the clients liking and applied with the utmost care, professionalism, and cleanliness – and for a great price. No pretentious ‘Tatt-2’ rockstars here, “We take what we do very seriously. We do not believe that tattooing should be marketed as something new and edgy. We feel our customers are more intelligent and discerning than that. We have a strong work ethic and strive to apply the caliber of tattoo that we would purchase if we were customers. We don’t buy into the pomposity that thrives in other shops; we don’t change peoples’ lives”. This is a SERVICE. Both the initiated and newcomers alike are treated with equal respect. Every customer’s tattoo is as important as the next, and they make their tattoo experiences as comfortable as possible

Whether to commemorate the passage from one station of life to another, the passage from one port to the next, or even just for fun, the Downtown Tattoo Parlour can fulfill all your tattoo needs.

Regretfully, there are a lot of places that do not see the historical significance of what we are doing. We live in a world where everyone knows the names Vuitton, Coach, Prada, etc. Yet somehow when it comes to our piercings, we still prefer to wear cheap, glittery plastic. For customers that have taste and demand quality, there is APOGEE. Not only do they respect the ethnic value of this tradition, it is prominently displayed in their cases. Folks, there is a difference. There is a level of experience that one should demand when the health and safety of their body is concerned.

Apogee Body Piercing The clouds part and Zeus hurls angry lightning bolts towards the earth. Mix that with the magic of the wizards and the prayers whispered by the druids and you might have an idea of what the hell is going on in here! The ritualistic act of adorning ones body is something that has withstood the test of time. There is no form of progress, evolution, western medicine or industry that has thus far been able to wrestle this part of history away from humanity. In an age where the whole world seems to be telling us what to do and what we should be doing, this is an amazing irony. This is more than a passing fad of “gauging out your sick gauges” with neon fluorescent plastic tapers. This is what it feels like to be human.

“We have been able to implement pertinent advancements in the medical industry to our practice in order to make this environment safe and clean for our patrons. We understand that for some people it is not easy to let go of some of the apprehensions attached to this type of procedure. Because of that we go the extra mile to help our clientele understand the value of remaining composed so they can walk out of our shop feeling like a hundred million dollars”. They will also teach you how to take care of your piercings. If you follow their simple directions, you significantly reduce the problems of something going terribly wrong. “There is a line in the sand people, if you don’t want to look like ‘them’ then head on over to Apogee and we can help you look like ‘us’. There is a jewel sparkling amidst the rubble, and for a low fee we will insert into a fresh piercing for ya! And just to show you we’ll go that extra mile for our clientele, we will always throw in a warm handshake and friendly nod at no additional cost! How’s that for service? Head on over to Apogee and we will show you the meaning of service, remembering always to keep your safety first. Sharp truth punctures spirit as we beautify America one poke at a time.”

MMA PROFILE

STEPHEN

“Abas was elected to the NCAA 75th Anniversary Wrestling Team as one of the 15 greatest wrestlers in NCAA history.”

ABAS

Olympic Wrestling Medalist Turns MMA Pro By Taff Davies

If you are a fan of MMA, you probably know how wrestlers have been dominating in the sport in recent years. They include such notable fighters as Brock Lesnar, Shane Carwin, Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, Matt Lindland, Matt Hughes, Josh Koscheck, and many others. But the newest addition to the MMA scene is a wrestler you may not have heard of, unless you are a fan of the sport of wrestling itself. His name is Stephen Abas and his wrestling achievements are greater than any of the other names just mentioned. In high school, he had a 190-10 record and was a three-time state champion during his sophomore, junior, and senior year. He was only the seventh wrestler in high school history to win three state titles and holds the national season takedown record and national career takedown record. In college, he started at Fresno State as one of the top freshmen in the country, ranked as high as second in the nation at 118 pounds. He then went on to win the 3 NCAA D-1 championships, as well as becoming a 4x All-American, going 144-4 in college and undefeated his last 2 seasons. He was then elected to the NCAA 75th Anniversary Wrestling Team as one of the 15 greatest wrestlers in NCAA history alongside others standouts such as Kurt Angle, Cael Sanderson, Dan Gable, and 11 other wrestling greats. On the international level, he became a decorated freestyle wrestler. He competed in two world freestyle championships and received a Silver Medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. He then barely lost in the 2008 Olympic Trials to eventual 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Henry Cejudo, subsequently retiring from competitive wrestling in 2008 at the age of 30. Abas then took 18 months off to reflect on his future. With such a competitive streak, and still young enough to compete in other sports, he naturally chose MMA as a career choice. In January of 2010, Abas started training and teaching at The Arena in San Diego, the MMA gym best known for training professional fighters as well as students who want to either become fighters or just train like fighters.

38  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

At The Arena, Abas works alongside some pretty elite athletes in their own right, including 6x World Jiu Jitsu Champion Xande Ribeiro, American National Jiu Jitsu Champion Jake Mapes, Undefeated Heavyweight Pro Boxer Rich Power, and other team members including such notable fighters as Strikeforce World Champion Cris “Cyborg” Santos. All of these athletes are trained by The Arena’s Head MMA Coach Pat Speight, one of the best keep secrets in MMA coaching. Speight is also an accomplished MMA fighter himself, with victories over fighters like James “Lightning” Wilkes, Season 8 winner of The Ultimate Fighter. In the past 4 months, besides training MMA under Pat Speight’s watchful eye, Abas has also immersed himself in Jiu Jitsu and Boxing under Arena instructors Jake Mapes and Rich Power. He has also been training with well-known local Boxing Coach Ernest Johnson Sr. Johnson has trained numerous Boxing champions, and is now working with specific elite athletes at The Arena who are looking to sharpen up their boxing skills. All this hard work just paid off for Abas on May 5, with a win in his MMA debut in Fresno, where he had such an incredible college career years before. He was matched against a much more experienced fighter who had turned professional in 2006, but Abas easily controlled and dominated the fight, taking his opponent down at will. With numerous fights planned for 2010 and beyond, it will be exciting to follow the career of this incredible wrestler as he concentrates his focus to achieving success in the rapidly growing sport of MMA. “he continues to be in demand as the fight manager who makes things happen”

JEFF CLARK

The Fight Manager Who Walks The Walk By Taff Davies

In the cutthroat world of the fight business, both Boxing and MMA, it is easy to stereotype fight managers in a less than favorable light. Placed in the middle between both the promoters and the fighters, a manager’s job is get the best deal for their fighters as well as help them make the best career decisions. Meanwhile, the managers have to do this job on behalf of their fighters while working with the promoters who obviously are looking out for their own best interests as well. As such, a fight manager’s life is never easy. What makes it even harder is when people with little experience in the industry try to jump into the game, thinking they can make quick money being a manager, but instead ruining fighters’ careers in the process due to this inexperience. It takes a rare type of person who actually knows the business inside and out, is willing to work 24/7, and will travel from one end of the world to the other on behalf of their clients. It is an even rarer and more valuable find to have an intelligent, caring manager who was once a professional fighter themselves. Having been a fighter allows a good manager to understand what fighters go through instead of simply looking at them as marketable commodities. These are the managers who truly walk the walk instead of just talk the talk and there is only a handful. One such fight manager is Jeff Clark. Originally fighting out of Carlsbad California, Jeff Clark was a founding member of the North County Fight Club. Clark was also a U.S. champion in full contact karate and earned a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, as well as owning numerous martial arts schools. Clark began fighting in MMA competitions before the sport was legalized, often fighting in underground promotions or in Mexico events. He began his official MMA career in 2004 and remained unbeaten for two years. While still fighting as well as training other fighters, Clark also began managing. After retiring from his MMA career due to neck surgery, Clark went full-time into MMA management, creating NCFC Elite, one of MMA’s top sports agencies. Now, Clark manages the careers of many well-known fighters such as UFC star Diego Sanchez and Roger Huerta, the first MMA fighter to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated. Besides managing, Clark is also actively training fighters. He is working with numerous fighters out of San Diego MMA gym The Arena, helping to build one of the best MMA teams in the U.S. With such a wealth of experience and such a dedication to his fighters, as well as his efforts to constantly help grow the sport of MMA itself, Clark is regarded as one of the most influential fight managers in the industry. Armed with his knowledge and skill, Jeff Clark’s mission is to build the best MMA management firm on the planet. With his determination to do whatever he can do on behalf of his clients, he will achieve his goal, as he continues to be in demand as the fight manager who makes things happen for both his clients and promoters alike. AIRSHIP VENTURES

Zeppelin Eureka Takes You To New Heights Photos & Story By Leslie Krouse

San Diego is such an amazing city, and to be able to find new ways to explore this wonder we live in, well, you can count me in. So when I received the press release stating that Airship Venture was bringing their Zeppelin ‘Eureka’ to San Diego, I didn’t hesitate to enquire about taking a ride. It triggered thoughts of the Goodyear Blimp flying high above our city. I would always contemplate on how spectacular the view must be from that vantage point. We’ve been given a brief glimpse during the games, but to actually be up there, and to have a first hand account of how spectacular it really is; there is just no comparison. What differentiates the Zeppelin from a Blimp? The blimp gets its shape from helium, and the Zeppelin has a rigid frame supporting its hull, made of aluminum and carbon–fiber. The engines are attached high up on the frame rather than on the basket, which enables exceptional flight performance, and allows for a quiet and stable passenger experience. Eureka’s cabin holds 12 passengers and 2 crewmembers, and boasts luxury features like oversized windows (some open!), an on-board restroom with a view, and a rear loveseat complete with a panoramic, wrap-around window. The Eureka is the largest Zeppelin in the world, measuring at 246 feet, 15ft longer than a 747 airplane, and 50 ft. longer that the largest blimp. The maximum air speed for the Eureka is about 78 mph, but we were cruising closer to 35 mph, and at 1200 ft. above San Diego, this is one of the best ways to enjoy our city. The colossal aircraft is one of only three Zeppelins operating in the world, and is the only airship licensed for commercial passengers in the United States. We started our adventure on the Airship Eureka, at Brown Field in Chula Vista. It was a partly cloudy day, with a bit of a wind. I was a little concerned with thoughts of a balloon in the breeze went through my mind. In the pre-flight safety briefing, (which is a lot like the airlines), we were all reassured that the pilot is very experienced, and she would not be taking off if the winds increased. After the safety check, and a wave of the metal detecting wand, we all climbed into the van that took us out to the docking point. We lined up 2 by 2, in Noah’s Arc fashion; then we were led onto the airship. Two passengers off, then two passengers on, this is done to keep the weight distributed properly. We buckled in, and then got ready for a ride that very few people have been fortunate enough to experience in their lifetime.

40  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

Zeppelin Eureka swoops in to pick up some lucky passengers. Notice the props up on the side of the structure, allowing for a very quiet ride inside

Pilot Kate Broad, the only female airship pilot in the world, and former San Diegan, greeted us and we were on our way. It only took a couple minutes before we were allowed to roam the ship. “This is amazing.” I heard again and again from the other passengers. I would have to say...“I agree”. To have the room, and ability to walk around a get a 360° view, this is definitely something I will never forget. We took off heading north/west towards the coast. The one-hour flight would take us past the Silver Strand to the Coronado Cays and Hotel Del, past the Coronado Bridge then onto downtown. This renewed perspective of our city has made a lasting impression on me. To see this side of SD, and how all the new buildings and remodels, Gaslamp District, Convention Center, and Pet Co Park have changed our skyline, it has genuinely made this “The Finest City” in America. There really is no place like home. This is definitely a must see. Airship Ventures will be back in town Memorial Weekend on May 28th and 29th. What a great way to celebrate. San Diego tours range from $199. 00 to $950.00, for more information go to www.airshipventures.com or for more pictures and a link to the ‘Eureka’ go to www.revoltinstyle.com Fun Fact: While the Eureka is the largest currently functioning zeppelin, the airships from the golden age of zeppelins were much, much larger. The Hindenburg and the Graf Zeppelin were about 800 feet long, and the Macon, which was based at Moffat for a couple of years in the 1930s, was 785 feet long. One of the more memorable rides of a lifetime. The Zeppelin Eureka takes you up to 1200 ft. Glides quietly over the city, the bay & the ocean where whales, surfers and boats of all sizes are just some of the amazing sights you will see.

There are not many ways to get a view like this. Airship Ventures will be back in May providing spectacular tours of San Diego for a handfull of lucky adventurers

SOUND BITES

OK GO Okay, let’s just get this part out of the way. Most people know OK Go from their videos, especially those treadmills. Any video that’s well enough known to be parodied on The Simpsons is a cultural force in itself and, checking the YouTube rating right before sitting down to write this, I was amazed to see that the number of views on the band’s YouTube page alone now stands at 47,788,229. That’s a lot. That many people and a brother who’s the Governor of Florida is pretty much enough to win you a presidential election. Add the zillions who’ve seen it elsewhere, and you might not even need the brother.
So if you’re reading these words, you’ve probably seen that video. I find even more endearing the video dance to “A Million Ways” that hundreds of amateur foursomes – kids and adults and church groups and school groups – have imitated in what certainly must be the world’s first international YouTube dance contest. If you haven’t had the pleasure, Google it right now and prepare to lose two hours of your life.

But I am here to say that OK Go is more than those videos. The band’s front man Damian Kulash sometimes makes big declarations like “We’re trying to be a DIY band in a post-major label world” or “Our whole bag is having good ideas and making cool shit.” I find that convincing.

Some of the other cool shit they’ve made lately: a record accompanied only by trombones, a play, an essay in the best-selling collection Things I’ve Learned From Women Who Dumped Me, op-eds in the New York Times and Huffington Post. They’ve testified before Congress and played in the Senate chambers. I repeat: they played music in the chambers of the United States Senate. They’ve been commentators on All Things Considered. They interviewed a member of N’Sync in the bathroom of Radio City Music Hall. They have a project where they walk the streets with fans handing out burritos to the homeless. They raised most of the money to buy a house for soul legend Al Johnson, so he could move home to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

All these extracurriculars make a great story, and this is the story that gets the space in The Wall Street Journal and USA Today: OK Go is the polymath band who – with only five bucks and a camcorder – did what none of the giant record labels could, inventing a new way for a band to connect with fans and changing the way people think about music and the Internet. Great story, though it overlooks the most important thing about the band: its music. Here’s your chance to see them in person, They are playing Saturday May 22, at the House of Blues

TRAINWRECK Trainwreck has been described by founder Kyle Gass as a cornucopia of rock and a 5-headed hydra of pleasure. Truer words were never spoken. Over the years, the Wreck has dirt-farmed a sound that lies somewhere in the realm of Southern Rock, but with plenty of forays into Prog-Rock, Boogie, and straight-up Classic Rock and Roll, as well as absurdist comedy banter and lyrics derived from the characters they’ve developed within the band. Always an unforgettable time, their shows have earned them fans all over the globe, headlining venues in the US, Canada, UK, and Australia. As a support act they’ve primed fans for sets by The Reverend Horton Heat, Vida Blue (Page from Phish), and Blues Traveler. The Wreck has also performed on The Jimmie Kimmel Show, and done guest spots for Current TV.

In late 2009 they released their long-awaited and much-hyped debut album, “The Wreckoning.” 15 tracks of what they call “Wreck and Roll.” It’s a sound all their own, cultivated from their influences, steeped heavily in the classics, and modified with their own unique set of talents. Fronted by biker-hayseed Darryl Donald (“Lee” of Tenacious D, or Jason Reed), and Kyle Gass (aka Klip Calhoun), and containing most of Tenacious D’s live/studio band (John Shredman, Boy Johnny, and Dallas St. Bernard), expect to see Trainwreck in your town in 2010 and beyond as they conquer the earth in support of The Wreckoning, and leave in their wake melted faces, busted ear-fannies, and the occasional bastard child. Catch them in San Diego at the Casbah May 11

Errol Asuncion and Jason Herrick are creating a strong infrastructure, consisting of friends, family, society, talent, philanthropy, and just plain love. Talent knows no bounds with these guys. They’ve created the Fortune 421 world, where fashion and music have harmoniously come together to become its own perfect entity. Along with their passion for music and fashion, ‘Share a Fortune’ is something they hold very close to their heart. Over the last 5 years they have worked hard to bring awareness, and donations to the Stand Up For Kids organization, which helps homeless teens and street kids to get back on track. Today, with Fortune 421 running stronger than ever, I sat down with Jason & Errol at the Se’ Hotel for a little Q&A session. RIS: What has changed in the last 5 years? Errol: I’d say in the beginning it was like we were doing very little, compared to what we are doing now. Every day is something new, and every turn is bright and exciting. The biggest thing for us is recognizing any mistakes we’ve made, smoothing them out and learning from them. We’re pulling back into our clothing line, getting back to where we started. We’ve brought in a new designer, Jon Phenom, who is awesome, you can find him at jonphenom.com. The future is definitely much brighter, and we are much more focused. Jason: We are also really excited about our new office downtown, on the corner of 9th and E St. Come by and visit us anytime. Mom still does all the stitching on all the shirts. It’s nice to have that synergy in our own work space. RIS: You guys went to the WMC this year. Did you notice any new trends coming out? Errol: I’m really happy that the electro-house culture is starting to catch on. I’ve been listening to it for about two decades. What used to be an underground vibe, is now becoming more mainstream. People are finding out that it’s smarter, more open minded, and just plain fun. That’s where we have the closest ties. I’m really excited about the future in the music industry.

RIS: What’s new, what’s next, with the clothing line? Jason: As Errol mentioned we brought in our 1st designer Jon Phenom. He has designed for companies such as Osiris and Ezekiel, and has been in the men’s fashion industry for over 10 years. He also has created his own denim line (which Errol is rockin’ today). We were able to bring him in last year to help consult with the design of our brand, and really to help us take it to the next level. Our goal is to see our clothing line in Nordstrom’s one day. We’re not quite there yet, we’re taking one day at a time. This summer we are planning on putting out a lot more designs with Jon, we’ll keep it simple. And for the ladies? No worries, we’ll be coming out with something for you as well. RIS: Tell us about some of your favorite DJ’s, and who you have enjoyed working with over the years. Jason: We have had the “fortunate” privilege of working with San Diego’s Scooter & Lavelle, Donald Glaude, DJ Scotty Boy. As for women DJ’s, we like working with DJ Diamond, Lisa, and Frances. We’ve really felt an abundance of support from these artist over the last few years, and really enjoy working with them. We are also going to be working with Charles Feelgood over Memorial Day Weekend. Some of the artists have supported us by wearing our t-shirts, DJ’s Laidback Luke, Bad Boy Bill, DJ Dan, Crystal Method, and Z-trip. Errol: Speaking of family we can’t forget, there are the DJ Theron’s, the G-Roy’s, and DJ Sins who’s like a brother to me, DJ Sanjay and Chris Devoy. Then there is Travis Emmons from LA, and one of the newest guys we’ve brought in. It’s really such a great community. In fact you guys just ran pictures of our t-shirt collaboration with Donald Glaude at Voyeur. It’s great to have the music and fashion tie together. We just want to thank everyone who’s been involved with us on every level. RIS: Tell us about some of the events you have coming up this summer. Errol: Every Friday we’re at Voyeur. Every 3rd Thursday we’re at Typhoon Saloon. The event is called “Save a Fortune” with cheap drinks, great music, and a lot of fun. We’re taking Downtown to the Beach. I think it’s great you guys run those pictures each month on line, and in your magazine. Jason: We have some amazing events scheduled for Memorial Weekend, 4th of July and Labor Day Weekend at the Grand Hyatt Marriott downtown. We are also teamed up with the Se’ Hotel, who also allowed us to have this photo shoot and interview here. We are joining Se’ in having the Elevation Fashion Show as well as Errolpalooza in September for Errol’s B-day. We are also hosting an event once a month at Wavehouse. You can check out our schedule on line at www.fortune421.com or keep up with us on our facebook.com/fortune421 page. We hope to see everyone at all our events to help spread the Fortune 421 love.

THE NATIONAL – HIGH VIOLET Genre – Alt/Rock

The National seem to take their time in making their multi-textured, emotion driven, and carefully orchestrated rock anthems. ‘High Violet’ is their first release in three years. Not coincidentally, their output requires patience to fully appreciate. If this were the ’70s or ’80s, a band like The National had they been around when, say, Bowie, Springsteen or U2 were beginning to make waves, they would have been huge. And they wouldn’t even have to change a thing. The National’s music is simple but never simplistic and since 2005’s Alligator they’ve been mining a seam of style that doesn’t appear to run dry. There isn’t a song on Alligator, or indeed its follow up Boxer, that is less than excellent. You’ll be happy to know, this is still the case on High Violet, album number five. Opening High Violet with typical command, ‘Terrible Love’ shivers with talk of the quiet company of spiders before building gradually into a vast epic. On ‘Sorrow’ Matt Berninger sounds caught between weariness and untapped romantic hope, his rich baritone helping lines like “cover me in rag and bones, because I don’t want to get over you” convey heartbreak and tenderness, jointly and with ambiguity. ‘Bloodbuzz Ohio’ meanwhile, is a passionate centerpiece; the moment when High Violet makes another of those near imperceptible shifts, this time taking their fifth album from fan-satisfier to a classic. High Violet hit the street on May 11th, you can catch them live at the Starlight Theater on May 23rd, and the will not disappoint.

MINUS THE BEAR OMNI

THE DEAD WEATHER SEA OF COWARDS

Genre – Exp/Alt/Rock

“Turn off the lights/touch me in the dark/fade into the feeling/whisper in my ear/ what you want/what you need/tell me my name/again, again/ yell out my name baby,” wow, I don’t usually quote a line this extensively, but damn! That is the opening line of the first song ‘My Time’ on MINUS the BEAR’s new album ‘OMNI’. After getting your hormones pumping with the first four tracks, the band switches it down with the slow-burning “Excuses,” as Snider calmly states, “running out of excuses/when we know what the truth is/I’m into you/I’m into you/when you hear this song/you’ll say you knew all along/you’re into me too.” The track appears at just the right time on Omni, setting the tone for the middle (and best) portion of the album. Omni is the album every Minus the Bear fan will love. Produced by Grammy Award winning producer Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, My Morning Jacket), ‘OMNI’ is the follow up to the band’s critically acclaimed albums Menos El Oso, Planet of Ice, and Highly Refined Pirates. “I think it’s a real leap forward,” singer/ guitarist Jake Snider agrees. “It’s an impactful sounding record.” With deep bass lines, mesmerizing guitar riffs, provocative lyrics, stimulating keyboards, and the use of the Japanese Omnichord synthesizer, OMNI explodes with a bursting energy, and unpredictable experimentation. This is one to put on the list. Minus the Bear will be playing at Soma on May 22, OMNI is out now.

DEFTONES DIAMOND EYES

Genre – Rock/Blues/Gothic

It doesn’t’ seem like there is anything Jack White can’t do with music. As the label executive in charge of Third Man Records, he’s never pressed a CD, opting instead for vinyl and digital-only releases. As the singer, and guitarist for the multi-platinum, Grammy award winning Alternative rock titan The White Stripes, he can’t release a new album every few months, so he’s made multiple names for himself with multiple bands; namely, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, which indulge his respective love of guitardrenched power-pop and dirty, blues-infused rock ‘n’ roll. The Dead Weather made its debut in July 2009 with Horehound, on which White collaborated with The Kills’ singer, Alison Mosshart, as well as guitarist-keyboardist Dean Fertita and bassist Jack Lawrence, both from The Raconteurs and Queens of the Stone Age. It’s a little difficult to keep up with all of Jack’s projects, but with his insuant talent just exploding onto everything he touches, this album is sure to be recognized as another amazing level of Jack. The mood throughout Sea Of Cowards is overwhelmingly darker in a psychosexual way. There are shadows of reverb throughout and the grooves are snaking and ominous one minute and brash and intimidating the next. All the while Mosshart is the voodoo blues temptress moaning and wailing her way across the riffage. Available May 11. Look for them live at the House of Blues July 19th.

Genre – Alt/Nu Medal

It has been roughly three and a half years that separates ‘Diamond Eyes’ from ‘Saturday Night Wrist.’ Bassist Chi Cheng suffered injuries so severe in a November 2008 auto accident that the band took a hiatus, two years later Chi still remains in a slight conscious state. Eventually they hired Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega on a permanent basest. With Diamond Eyes, the band takes every high point from their entire discography and fuses them together to create their heaviest and most ambient album to date. Diamond Eyes mixes the ambient and the brutish with almost surgical precision. The title track ‘Diamond Eyes’ is the first song on this album and it connects all of the different atmospheres into one song and superbly portrays what this album is about, sonically and lyrically. Some of my favorites include ‘CMND/ CTRL’, ‘Prince’, ‘Risk’, ‘Beauty School’, ‘Rocket Skates’ and ‘This Place is Death’; but believe me there is not one bad song on this entire release. If your a fan of their heavier material than you will find it in many of these songs, and if you like the softer more melodic side to the Deftones, than you will find this record to be no stranger to that either. Diamond Eyes is set to release on May 18.

VINYL MONO/POLY - The George Machine

The California beatmeister Charles Dickerson aka Mono/Poly is a name that will be familiar to anyone paying attention to the beat edits scene over the last year. His pre-release cuts have been a staple feature of mixes emerging from Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder camp, of which he is a member, while his own sessions have been aired everywhere from Dublab to Mary Anne Hobbs, and his regular appearances at LA’s Low End Theory club have grown to become major crowd pullers. The George Machine tracks have been floating around here & there for a few months, played & supported by Busy P/Pedro Winter (Ed Banger), Benji B, Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer, Zero dB, Simbad & many more, in fact it’s featured on our own Ras G “Beat Soup” mix. “Mono / Poly is the fucking TRUTH. This 12” will leave you flat on the floor making an ugly face” - The Mother Fucking Gaslamp Killer (Low End Theory / Los Angeles) $15.99

Dave Barker/Brett Johnson - Silly String

“No Pictures Please” is a collision of smart tech-house, Lil’ Louis and Pac-man: bumping beats, hypnotic tones and clever edits perfect for that 3 AM mind twist. NPP is getting support from all the house and techno heavy hitters. “Scattered Showers” has that deep, smoky flavor you have come to love when Brett and Dave do their deeper moments. This song has a beautiful chorus sung by Dave and underwater synth lines. The jack’n beats keep everything moving but this is one song your are sure to get lost in. “Where Are You From?” is the product of two guys getting too silly in the studio. This track has a groovy Herbie-esqe bassline, spastic synth leads, and some wacky vocals by Dex. Good, clean, post-acid trip fun!

Cowboy Johnny Christ - Are You A lonely Girl?

FLYING LOTUS 1983

The first full-length album from this now legendary producer, originally released on PLUG RESEARCH in 2006, gets a welcome re-press. A truly West Coast vibe, this connects the fractured, funky soul of DILLA and MADLIB to the more psychedelic downtempo of DAEDELUS or NOBODY. Essential! $17.99

COMING SOON

WATCH THIS By Beth Accomando

SUMMER PREVIEW So this is the summer that women are supposed to challenge men at the box office. But as a woman I have to admit I am embarrassed to see that it’s the bimbos of Sex and the City and a teenage girl pining for her sparkling vampire that are representing the female gender. While on the male side there is so much testosterone driven action that they may serve steroids with the popcorn.

The summer season essentially kicks off with Robert Downey, Jr. returning as Tony Stark in Iron Man 2 (Paramount, May 7) with Mickey Rourke as an ass-kicking Whiplash and Scarlett Johansson as a sexy new addition. Jon Favreau is back to direct and everything looks in place to keep this franchise humming along nicely. More brawn is on display as Russell Crowe (really? Russell Crowe?) takes on the role of the infamous do-gooding bandit Robin Hood (Universal, May 14). The film re-teams Crowe with director Ridley Scott and Cate Blanchett takes on the role of Marion. Then the kiddies get their franchise installment with yet another entry from the green ogre, Shrek Forever After (Paramount, May 21). But the better-animated fare arrives later in the summer with Toy Story 3 (Disney/Pixar, June 18). Next prepare for the femme fashionista invasion of Sex and the City 2 (New Line, May 27). Sarah Jessica Parker and her catty cohorts (Kim Cattrall, Kristen Davis, Cynthia Nixon) gear up for another empty-headed sequel in which they pretend to be empowered, smart, sexy women but all they want are men and a bigger closet for all their material possessions. Geez where’s Hit Girl when you need her? But then the testosterone kicks up again with a buffed out Jake Gyllenhaal bringing the video game Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (Walt Disney, May 28) belatedly to screen life. The Disney label has me worried and the film looks to be the Conan for the new millennium. My hopes are higher for the big screen adaptation of the old TV show The A-Team (20th Century Fox, June 11). Liam Neeson and Bradley Cooper head up the new A-Team with Smokin’ Aces director Joe Carnahan at the helm. This won’t be high art but it should kick some ass in a light-hearted manner.

48  WWW.REVOLTINSTYLE.COM

Then prepare for swooning teens and their moms as the next installment in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga arrives in theaters. Eclipse (Summit Entertainment, June 30) plays up the romantic triangle between Bella (Kristen Stewart), her sparkly vampire (Robert Pattinson), and her hunky werewolf (Taylor Lautner). I never thought vampires could suck so bad. Rounding out the summer will be the eagerly anticipated remake/sequel/ reimagining whatever of Predators (20th Century Fox, July 9) from Robert Rodriguez, and the trippy thriller Inception (Warner Brothers, July 16) from Christopher Nolan. I don’t want to get into August just yet but there are a couple fun titles to mention with the steroid-pumped The Expendables from Sylvester Stallone and Scott Pilgrim Versus the World from Shaun of the Dead’s Edgar Wright. So take your steroids, check your brain at the door, and watch out for back stabbing bitches.

Kick-Ass

(Lionsgate) Kick-Ass genuinely kicks ass. This violent, funny anti-superhero tale tells us that it’s dumb to try and be a superhero dispensing vigilante justice. In fact you can get hurt and even killed. Based on the Mark Millar-John Romita, Jr. comics the film delivers great action and serves up a critique of the cult of celebrity and our violence obsessed culture. Great all around with Chloe Moretz stealing the show as the lethal, pint-sized Hit Girl. Currently in theaters.

The Human Centipede All you have to do is describe the premise of The Human Centipede and you are guaranteed to get a major “Eeeew!” reaction. What is the premise you ask? A mad German doctor wants to surgically attach three people – “ass to mouth” -- to create a perverse version of a centipede. Excuse me? “Well the idea came very simply,” says writer-director Tom Six, “I always make this little sick joke to friends [about] a child molester. I said they should stitch his mouth to the ass of a very fat truck driver. That would be good punishment for him. Everybody says that idea is so horrible. And I thought yeah it is a horrible idea and it might be a great idea for a horror film.” Of course when Six pitched the idea to his financial backers he left out the words “ass to mouth” and simply told them, “I want to make a film about a surgeon who stitches people together.” But Six says he likes to push the envelope and on a certain level if no one walks out of his film then “the film wasn’t controversial enough.” The Human Centipede has opened in select cities, played the midnight circuit, and is available Video on Demand. The official title of the film is The Human Centipede: First Sequence. So does this mean Six has a sequel in mind? “Yes we are going to shoot the sequel The Human Centipede Full Sequence in London,” Six tells me over the phone, “I wanted to make a sequel because I have all my ideas and couldn’t put them all in part one because the idea itself is so horrible that I first wanted the audience to get used to the idea and in the sequel I can use all my ideas so

I am going to build a human centipede of twelve people. I always say part one will be My Little Pony compared to part two because it’s going to be pretty horrible.” Yet despite the disturbing subject matter, Six directs the film with surprising restraint. You won’t find any handheld shakycam, excessive gore, or fast-cutting here. The pace is actually measured and the film is almost elegantly shot. “The idea is so horrible,” Six says, “and I really like that fact so the movie becomes like way stronger because I really focus on the human centipede and the drama of the two girls and the guy having to go through these emotional, very horrible things and that’s why I chose this way of shooting and left out the gore a little bit.”

Exit Through the Gift Shop

(Paranoid Pictures) The funniest film you’ll see this year may just be this art documentary. You heard me right. But this is no ordinary doc. This is a doc about street art made by the notorious Banksy. It’s also a savvy critique of the art world, and the media and public’s need to find the next big thing. It also pays tribute to some great street art, which has a very short life expectancy if it’s not somehow recorded on film or video. Currently at Landmark’s Hillcrest Cinemas

But what is disturbing is Dieter Laser as the crazy Dr. Heiter. Laser looks like a cross between Lance Henrikson and Christopher Walken as he channels old Nazi war criminals. Laser’s performance is mostly low key – with the occasional mad outburst – and he’s brilliant. For filmmaker Tom Six, though, it’s all about pushing the audience’s buttons: “As a filmmaker it is fun to see if you can push an audience to the limit. It’s a really big challenge to create something original or new and see how people react to it. I think the fun in horror filmmaking is that you are safe in the theater or at home on the couch and you see all those horrible things on the screen and you are safe. And I think that gives you a thrill or something.” We’ll have to wait and see if audiences thrill to The Human Centipede and make it into another cult classic on the midnight movie circuit. And be prepared for The Human Centipede Full Sequence coming soon to a theater near you. Ew!

Get Him to the Greek (Universal)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall’s Nicholas Stoller re-teams Johan Hill and Russell Brand as a record company intern and an out of control British rock star. The goal: get the celeb to the Greek Theater in LA for a concert. This film has promising pedigree and should be a strong summer comedy. Brand is absolutely hilarious. Opening June 4.

Truly one-of-a-kind, Tom Six’s twisted biological horror film THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE confidently goes where few films have dared to go. The sick vision of a demented surgeon, a role portrayed so brilliantly by Dieter Laser it is sure to join Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface in the horror pantheon, as a 100% medically accurate nightmare.

The Good, the Bad and the Weird

(Cineclick Asia) Riffing on the Sergio Leone spaghetti western The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, South Korea’s Kim Jee Woon serves up a deliriously over-the-top “Oriental Western.” Set in the 1930s Manchurian desert, three Korean men fatefully meet up on a train, and then all hell breaks loose. Wildly fun, audaciously stylish, and action packed. This is a true Asian delight. Opens May 14 at Landmark Ken

I know it’s because you’re afraid of the dark, but get a grip and a Clapper - Clap on, clap off! It’s easier than getting herpes! The TWINS and Outs I’m thrilled to notice a change in the cleanliness of your bathroom, but Gemini you really need to stop buying those Antibacterial Wipes. Yes, you of all signs need them, but they’re bad for the environment. Just use those old gym clothes you no longer work out in to clean your toilet. Stock Up On CANCERed Goods When the apocalypse comes (and I know it’s soon) do not expect to gain entry to my home. The fact that I’ve stopped answering your needy, shouty, demanding calls should already be a strong indication that I will let you die on my Welcome mat as I eat Chef Boyardee. SoLEOr Power Well, fire sign, you’ve managed to offend an entire group of people yet again by talking non-stop about all the things you think you know. I’d suggest you never carpool to a party unless you feel like walking home.
